We were just a mainstream
Mormon family, in a mormon area.
Saint george is pretty
White so I would always be the
Only brown girl in class.
I think it was first grade I was
Put into an english second
Language class even though
English was my first language.
They would take me out of class
Like I was different from
Everyone else.
So, this is the bi flag.
I identify as bisexual.
I didn't know what the
Word g*y meant until I was I
Think like in fourth grade.
I remember seeing a magazine
With like two women kissing, I
Was like oh, [laughs]
I remember reading it's
Like this book of scripture it
Outlines like the church's
Stances on different things.
I remember reading h*m*
Is a sin.
Queerness is really your cross
To bear because if you are able
To stay faithful not commit the
Sin of h*m* you will be
Able to enter the next life and
Queerness will be taken from
You.
That was just too much,
I had to leave the church after
That cuz I did not want to feel
Like that anymore.

Then my mom and I decided to
Leave the church.

Felt unsafe to make a move like

Book of mormon, the lamanites
They're a group of people who
Disobeyed god and then were
Cursed with dark skin.
So many people believe that and
They've called me a lamanite,
Like that's just how people talk
And they think it's okay.

And they think it's okay because
That's what the church teaches
Them.

It literally is like
Systemically like r*cist and
Sexist and it has been since the

There was a big period when I
First came out that no, they,
They completely shut me out.

Going to salt lake city or
Somewhere more progressive?

Because down here in
Saint george it's a lot more
Conservative than it is up in
Salt lake.

So a big portion of our
Community specifically the trans
Community that doesn't
Necessarily feel comfortable
Coming out.
I had an incident last
Year with a business where I
Was almost dragged out of the
Bathroom.
Yeah.
And so...
Bob: like a, a, like a
Restaurant or something in town?
Yeah.
I was more comfortable using the
Female restroom and so that's
What I walked into and used and
There was a whole bunch of men
Outside hollering "there's a man
In the women's bathroom" and
Came in and started pounding
On the stall door and...
Bob: that sounds so scary.
It was, I had a really
Hard time with that.
I still struggle to use public
Restrooms now.
Bob: and there's no like
q*eer scene here?
We have a small pride
Organization, I actually just
Took over as the executive
Director of it.

With my family forever.

When gaby came to me and told
Me that she wanted to leave the
Church I kind of had a break
Down but at the same time it
Didn't make any sense.
A loving god wouldn't let me see
My kid because they're g*y?
No, I don't believe that at all
So that's when I knew like I had
To leave.
I can't be with an
Organization that teaches that.

The lds church was something
I grew up in, I was born into
And I knew nothing different.
Now my husband is the only
Member of our family that goes
To church still.

White, it's not safe here for

It makes it really hard
To live here in saint george um,
I can't fully experience the
Community like everybody else

It's where I've grown up.
A lot of my wife's family lives
Here too so we don't want to
Feel forced out of where we feel
Is our home.
So I work towards progress at

Was a chance to see ourselves in
Our characters.

Conservative board is pushing
That narrative that "rent" was
Too g*y, it's the same thing
That the city council is doing
Trying to cancel our drag show.
Just continues to instill fear
Into anything that's different
Than what they believe.
It's hard to find good
People here.
I am a little scared before
I tell people about being trans
Because, you know, with
Everybody there's always that
Possibility that they're not
Gonna love me anymore.
But in my friend group it's not
Like that.
