I'm learning a lot about the

Mormon culture which is

Interesting.

Then I couldn't fit in the

All my life I would catch

What it would be like to be a

Boy.

I honestly thought that that

Every girl had thoughts about

Like what it would be to be a

Boy.

How it would feel to have

Boy parts.

I guess not.

I just got mis-gendered in

A store.

Like there's, I don't, I

Don't look like a girl or

Nothing and this lady just like

Went out of her way to say "she"

To me.

Getting to know that I am

A guy, I have really conflicting

Thoughts in my head, it's kind

Of like an angel and a devil,

You know.

Just telling me like maybe

I should just give up because

Nobody sees me as a guy.

Everybody sees me as a girl, so

Why am I even trying.

When I am so overwhelmed with

A feeling that there's nothing

Else to fix it, I just put my

Pen on a paper and I just

Scribble until I feel good

And it made something.

When I'm doing art, gender

Doesn't really have a place in

It.

It's kind of just one of those

Times where I don't have to

Think about it, at all.

I live with my mom and

My grandma but we're not

Filming in my home because my

Grandma is not very accepting of

This stuff, she doesn't' get it

And she doesn't want the camera

In the house.

I wasn't in the beginning

Open about it, I still don't

Correct people all the time but

My co-workers were all really

Nice about it.

Shangela: you seem like it

Was very surprising.

I just get surprised when

People are just like super nice

About stuff like this.

Cuz a lot of the people here

Just aren't that way.

Shangela: right.

Like at your house do you find

That to be like a safe space?

My grandma does not

Accept the fact that I'm trans.

Like one time at the dinner

Table she said g*y people have

Something mentally wrong with

Their brain.

My grandma was like

You'll never be toni to be

You'll always be dead name to

Me.

And it just like came out of

Nowhere so I just got really

Sad.

I was like okay, well now that

You guys are done making me feel

Like crap I'm gonna go

Downstairs.

Shangela: yeah.

I don't know how to

Explain it in a way that someone

Else could get it cuz I barely

Get it so...

Shangela: well there's the

First thing.

You don't have to explain

It to everybody.

You take as long as you want.

Sometimes I feel a little

Invalidated when I think about

Other people's transitions

Because they knew from like a

Young age.

And I didn't, I didn't

Know from a young age, I only

Knew like last year, I only

Really figured it out.

Shangela: when people talk

About identity, don't compare

Your experience to nobody

Else's.

You are toni and your

Experience is not gonna match

Anybody else's experience.

Shangela: so with our show is

It okay, for me to assume that

You want to do something, the

Type of drag, like a drag king,

Like masculine presenting?

Yep.

Dressing in a certain

Way or doing my hair in a

Certain way to make me look

More masculine it just feels

Really right to me.

Shangela: it's important for

You to see yourself on the

Outside how you feel on the

Inside.

Cuz we don't hide in drag, we

Become even more in drag.

It's gonna be really cool.

We were just a mainstream

Mormon family, in a mormon area.

Saint george is pretty

White so I would always be the

Only brown girl in class.

I think it was first grade I was

Put into an english second

Language class even though

English was my first language.

They would take me out of class

Like I was different from

Everyone else.

So, this is the bi flag.

I identify as bisexual.

I didn't know what the

Word g*y meant until I was I

Think like in fourth grade.

I remember seeing a magazine

With like two women kissing, I

Was like oh, [laughs]

I remember reading it's

Like this book of scripture it

Outlines like the church's

Stances on different things.

I remember reading h*m*

Is a sin.

Queerness is really your cross

To bear because if you are able

To stay faithful not commit the

Sin of h*m* you will be

Able to enter the next life and

Queerness will be taken from

You.

That was just too much,

I had to leave the church after

That cuz I did not want to feel

Like that anymore.

So, I identify um, as a

Woman bisexual.

Eureka: what's the culture

Like here in this area?

It's very conservative, it's

Very mormon.

The whole culture here is very

Much like in your business like

There are people who have like

Shown up at our front doorstep

And have been like why haven't

You been to church or you know

Whatever.

Eureka: are you mormon?

I grew up mormon and

Then my mom and I decided to

Leave the church.

Eureka: you must have really

Felt unsafe to make a move like

That?

Oh, yeah, if you read the

Book of mormon, the lamanites

They're a group of people who

Disobeyed god and then were

Cursed with dark skin.

So many people believe that and

They've called me a lamanite,

Like that's just how people talk

And they think it's okay.

Eureka: they've called you a

Lamanite?

Yeah.

And they think it's okay because

That's what the church teaches

Them.

Eureka: what?

Yeah.

It literally is like

Systemically like r*cist and

Sexist and it has been since the

Beginning of the church.

So now I have to find out who I

Am cuz I couldn't before.

Like I wasn't allowed to.

Eureka: so what kind of drag

Queen are you?

I've been wondering like

What would it be to like take up

More space to like, not you

Know be afraid to like say

Things or do things.

I mean, cuz that's kind of been

My whole life.

Eureka: what our biggest

Lesson might be is for you to

Learn how to do that as the

Powerful woman you are.

We're a normal family too.

As a q*eer parent here

In the community I feel like I

Do have to carry myself in a

Certain way.

The school systems here

They don't understand how to

Address us.

And our daughter has faced some

Discrimination amongst other

Kids.

We've actually had to change

Schools a couple of times.

It's challenging and it's hard

On her emotionally too.

Because I am nonbinary you

Know there are people that look

At you and look at me and try

And figure me out, you know

What, what, what I am.

When people are

Looking at me trying to figure

Me out, part of me feels like

That when I'm out with my

Family, we just want to go about

Our business and feel safe.

Had top surgery like five weeks

I was.

Bob: I think of mormons as

Docile, um.

Very kind.

Experience?

I, they are very

Sweet and very kind.

They, they definitely have claws

When it comes to q*eer issues.

Bob: how was it like leaving

The mormon faith for you?

Hard.

It was hard.

Bob: what made it so hard?

They make themselves

Everything in your life.

Your, your family is all

Connected,

They are your community if you

Leave it you know you're going

To be ostracized from your

Community, your neighbors, in

My case, my family too so.

Bob: do you still talk to

Your family?

There was a big period when I

First came out that no, they,

They completely shut me out.

Bob: do you ever think about

Going to salt lake city or

Somewhere more progressive?

Yeah.

Oh, yeah, all the

Time.

Because down here in

Saint george it's a lot more

Conservative than it is up in

Salt lake.

Bob: that makes sense.

So a big portion of our

Community specifically the trans

Community that doesn't

Necessarily feel comfortable

Coming out.

I had an incident last

Year with a business where I

Was almost dragged out of the

Bathroom.

Yeah.

And so...

Bob: like a, a, like a

Restaurant or something in town?

Yeah.

I was more comfortable using the

Female restroom and so that's

What I walked into and used and

There was a whole bunch of men

Outside hollering "there's a man

In the women's bathroom" and

Came in and started pounding

On the stall door and...

Bob: that sounds so scary.

It was, I had a really

Hard time with that.

I still struggle to use public

Restrooms now.

Bob: and there's no like

q*eer scene here?

We have a small pride

Organization, I actually just

Took over as the executive

Director of it.

Bob: oh work.

Am I talking to the g*y

President of, of saint

George?

A little bit.

Bob: you're the q*eer-mander

And chief.

Yeah, the q*eer-mander

And chief.

Bob: who do you think is

Gonna come support you in this

Show?

Probably a lot of our

q*eer community.

They love drag shows.

Bob: are there a lot of drag

Queens around here?

Me and another king so

And then other queens.

Bob: so you're a performer?

Yeah.

Drag helped me kind of

Discover my gender identity.

Kind of playing with gender so

Much with drag, but um,

Especially with this show you

Know it's been like very

Emotional for me.

It's kind of the first time for

Me to like perform in drag after

Having top surgery and so...

I kind of want to like go

A little bit more androngynistic

Male.

I do want to keep my

Mustache, if that's possible.

I'm six foot two and I already

Community here but there's

Community in saint george?

I feel like we're just

Kind of like living our lives in

Separate places you know from

Like even putting up like pride

Banners and the pride flags we,

There's been repercussions.

Bob: what kind of

Repercussions?

I've had clients that

They've had their pride flag

Ripped up, some people like lit

It on fire.

Eureka: that's crazy.

Bob: are they conservatives

Here like aggressive or...

There's a really strong

Strain of passive aggressive.

Bob: I keep hearing that word

A lot.

Shangela: we've definitely

Run into that; we've run into

You know, facebook posts.

Bob: we're the stars of the

Local facebook pages.

Bob: saint george is not in

Your face.

We got permission to do

Our drag show in the town

Square.

We did everything right,

We got the permits, and then we

Find out that apparently city

Hall is entertaining the idea of

Pulling our permit.

Bob: michelle tanner, saint

George city councilwoman.

She sent a letter that, talking

About all of her concerns an hbo

Rated tv-ma drag show is being

Held outside our public

Children's museum.

Eureka: of course you know

Social media is a huge force in

Getting people riled up by

Instilling fear.

Oh they're worried that we're

Going to convert the mormons to

Gays.

Like mama you can't convert

Anyone to g*y.

If that was the case we'd be

Doing missions too.

Bob: and obviously I feel

Like she's never seen our show.

You might like it.

The biggest thing about

The church is family, families

Being together forever and the

Only way to do that is to enter

The celestial kingdom.

Basically if you want to live

With god and your family forever

You have to get married in the

Temple, you have to be a man and

A woman.

And then when I came out that

Was the biggest thing that

Scared me cuz I wanted to live

With my family forever.

It's okay, just roll it and

Then I'll tell you.

When gaby came to me and told

Me that she wanted to leave the

Church I kind of had a break

Down but at the same time it

Didn't make any sense.

A loving god wouldn't let me see

My kid because they're g*y?

No, I don't believe that at all

So that's when I knew like I had

To leave.

I can't be with an

Organization that teaches that.

Yeah.

The lds church was something

I grew up in, I was born into

And I knew nothing different.

Now my husband is the only

Member of our family that goes

To church still.

Some people that will not enjoy

It, but I think my whole school

Will probably be there so...

And the people who

Are gonna be against it,

They'll, just stay away, they

Just won't come but there's

Gonna be a lot of people there.

Eureka: I think angenae has

Provided a really great role by

Being gaby's mother who is

Accepting and understanding

Which is surprising for a mormon

Family.

You can tell that angenae

Has a very strong female

Presence in her household.

Since I've left the

Church I can be myself.

I don't have to pretend to be

Someone else or pretend to be

Perfect or get dressed up on

Sunday trying to impress people

And I feel much more at peace.

Eureka: so we're just gonna

Like everybody else and...

Identify as bisexual.

I've told gaby and my husband

Up in a conservative community.

Like you're just so scared all

The time.

Is probably your family and your

And my community.

I'm a school

Counselor, and there has been

Like educators recently in the

News who have gotten in trouble

For voicing their support of

Lgbtq.

Eureka: angenae has

Supported gaby in coming out,

She left the church with gaby

And I think that they both have

A message to say to their

Community.

I really want angenae to join

This performance with me and

Gaby.

Eureka: you're already

Teaching your children how to

Love without rules.

So if you're gonna teach your

Kids to do that you have to do

It yourself, for yourself.

Yeah.

Around saint george, because I

Came out as l*sbian later in

Life.

Walking around the community

As you know a white cis woman

Was pretty easy.

Walking around as a q*eer person

Is different, it feels sometimes

Not so safe.

If you're not cis,

Heterosexual, and predominantly

White, it's not safe here for

You.

It makes it really hard

To live here in saint george um,

I can't fully experience the

Community like everybody else

Can.

But at the same time

It's where I've grown up.

A lot of my wife's family lives

Here too so we don't want to

Feel forced out of where we feel

Is our home.

So I work towards progress at

Something i, I'm trying to get

People to see and to understand.

Here in saint george.

We've been invited here

To discuss inclusivity.

The lgbtq community is a growing

One, so let's do better by them.

Mis-gendering is when

You kind of assume somebody's

Gender and it is incorrect.

Is it okay to just ask?

Yes, ask.

It's, it's much better to ask

Than to assume.

Yes.

I don't really understand

Why pronouns are important,

Why are they so important?

You personally I would

Identify as male, correct?

Yes.

So if i, somebody

Walked up to you and was just

Like oh, she.

How, how does that feel?

A little odd.

Yeah, yeah.

We throw events, we throw

Poetry slams, meet and greets,

And brunches.

Every single event that we have,

We have protestors and expect

The police to show up.

They're gonna definitely show up

And check in on us.

They always do.

Our city councils don't

Necessarily openly support us so

That could potentially damage us

We were talking about

Trans people and I was like

Well, what if I was cuz I might

And I said I'd still

That I would be supportive.

Know prefer you to live a

Really normal life, safe life.

You know I have some fears.

Cuz there are a lot of people

Out there that are just cruel.

And that's what I'm scared of.

Cuz she has a great,

I'm sorry he has a great support

Group in this community but

What happens when he moves

Away?

With mom for a little bit.

It made me feel so relieved that

He is happy.

But you know I'm worried that he

Might go too far and change his

Cancelled our show.

They wouldn't do "rent" because

They said the community wasn't

Ready for a story like that.

I was just gutted because

A lot of us were q*eer and this

Was a chance to see ourselves in

Our characters.

Conservative board is pushing

That narrative that "rent" was

Too g*y, it's the same thing

That the city council is doing

Trying to cancel our drag show.

Just continues to instill fear

Into anything that's different

Than what they believe.

It's hard to find good

People here.

I am a little scared before

I tell people about being trans

Because, you know, with

Everybody there's always that

Possibility that they're not

Gonna love me anymore.

But in my friend group it's not

Like that.
