some places in the universe are very
very hot
and others are very very cold
could somebody get me a
hot cocoa and
maybe a blanket sorry i'm busy
announcing
i'll ask the sun to send some extra heat
your way she's really sizzling today
the sun sure is in a good mood
tell me about it our chili fire unit is
totally overloaded
i'm going to cool off by taking a nice
dip in the pool
anyone care to join me uh i think it
might be a little crowded in there but
you know what would hit the spot right
now a tall glass of cool water or a
brain-freezing snow cone
big ice pluto pops you know
all of those are different forms of
water what do you mean how can all those
things be water hey malto let's all go
to the multopedia and show them you go
on ahead i have a few more laps to do
[Music]
okay
when the temperature changes so does
water water can exist in three different
forms one form is solid that's ice you
know it's called when there's ice around
another form of water is liquid that's
what we usually think of when we talk
about water it's around when it's warm
enough for the ice to melt
[Music]
the third form of water is gas also
called water vapor
when water gets hot enough to evaporate
it becomes vapor it is made of tiny
drops of water in the air that we can't
see with just our eyes it happens when
things are really heating up and when it
gets cooler the water vapor turns into
liquid water again like the tiny drops
of water on the grass in the morning
i never knew water could be so many
things solid liquid and gas water sure
is talented speaking of talented watch
me do a half gainer with a triple twist
jackknife swan dive tuck belly flop
uh amazing
ah
wouldn't it be wonderful if it snowed
right now it doesn't snow on hot days
wig where does snow come from anyway is
that another kind of water well wizzy
emergency come in little sprinkle
someone needs our help
yeah but who's little sprinkle
oh i wish she wouldn't call me that
it's my friend professor precipito
she lives in a cold part of zula
studying all kinds of precipitation
which is any kind of water that falls to
the ground like rain snow sleet or hail
molto here how are you professor oh not
good my friend
someone is stealing me outdoor
experiments will you come and help me
solve this mystery this is a job for the
zula
patrol i have to warn you though it can
get very cold here yeah
cooler weather here we come hey
we never found out where snow comes from
let's see if we can figure it out
ourselves
[Music]
it was just air a minute ago
the air must be full of tiny drops of
water that we can't see what cedar
called water vapor the thermometer says
the air is really cold this high up so
the cold window must have made the water
vapor near the window cold and when
water vapor gets colder it becomes
liquid water like those drops
and like that rain outside
hey we should keep track of what we find
[Music]
now it's snowing and getting colder way
up here
[Music]
professor precipito so glad to see you
little sprinkle oh yes and uh
here's the rest of the zula patrol hello
nice to meet you come let me show you me
lab
wow these snowflakes sure are beautiful
know what i love about snowflakes no two
are alike just like our fingerprints
what exactly do you do here i study
precipitation which mostly means i get
wet a lot for i will not rest until i
know everything there is to know about
water
take this experiment for example an ice
cube placed in warm water the lower part
of the ice cube the part under the water
will melt faster making the upper part
heavier and
there it goes the ice cube will tip over
and over as it melts
then there's this experiment two ice
cube trays
one filled with snow the other with ice
which one will have more water after
melting
hmm
i think the ice cubes because the ice
cubes don't have as much air inside them
as the snowflakes
see the snowflakes are looser with more
air in them well let's see
that's right good for you
but i haven't shown you the best part of
my laboratory the great outdoors and i'm
predicting the salt and the pretzel will
melt the snow but the snow on the cookie
will remain
and this is me most important experiment
measuring rainfall and snowfall this
device has a heater that melts the snow
into water it will tell me if the amount
of precipitation is changing from year
to year
i've recorded the measurements for years
in this journal and over there i'm
experimenting with different rain dances
[Music]
so far i've only had success with
hip-hop
oh no now the snow gauge is gone do you
see what i mean my experiments keep
disappearing
[Music]
oh look
gorga found footprints whoever took your
experiment went that way that is the
most important one for me research
you must get it back just leave it to us
professor precipito
[Music]
look at all those clouds wig when we fly
above the clouds it never rains snows or
hails
huh i think raining snow must come from
the clouds
[Music]
i thought he was just make-believe and
he's got the experiment
there he goes catch him
follow that bouncing snow gleep
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
i forgot to tell you it's going to get a
lot colder soon
[Music]
[Music]
liquid water
gets cold
turns to ice
stuck
ah zeder could you um oh sure
i still can't believe i got this out of
a box of cereal
[Music]
wow
[Music]
what do you know the abominable snow
gleep likes to do scientific experiments
too
that's great but it's not okay to steal
them from others
my experiments you found them my
research is saved
wait a minute
this one isn't mine and neither is this
one
brilliant where did you dream up such a
wonderful experiment
i see
well of course well that makes sense
fascinating you understand what he's
saying why sure it's just a southern
dialect of the zulayan polar bear
language although he does have a very
thick accent
how would you like to join me in me
research this could be the beginning of
a beautiful scientific friendship
it's amazing what can happen when
friends work together hey wig
i have an idea about how snow happens
air must have tiny drops of water in it
like we saw on the ship window and when
they all bunch up together in the sky i
think it makes a cloud
those tiny drops of water become rain
and when it gets colder they freeze and
become snow or hail
right you are well done you're thinking
like scientists
here's something i brought you little
sprinkle thank you for all your
help so did you two used to study rain
together is that why she called you
little sprinkles no
i just love donuts with some little
sprinkles
and so that's our very warm ending to a
very cold story
[Music]
time for our malto moment
do you remember what we learned about
rain snow and hail great band don't they
have a new song out
no
i mean the kind that falls from the sky
maybe i can explain it better with the
help of a snow expert
when the temperature changes so does
water when it's cold there's ice around
when it warms up ice melts and becomes
you guessed it
a liquid and if it really warms up then
a puddle of water will get smaller and
smaller as it becomes the gas also
called water vapor
when water vapor rises in the air and
gets all bunched up it becomes a cloud
when that water vapor cools it falls to
the ground as rain if it's really cold
and windy the water vapor falls to the
ground as little pieces of ice cooled
hail
and sometimes that water vapor falls to
the ground as snowflakes
and when lots and lots of snowflakes
fall down that's called the snow day
see you next time
you
