very hot

and others are very very cold

could somebody get me a

when the temperature changes so does

water water can exist in three different

forms one form is solid that's ice you

know it's called when there's ice around

another form of water is liquid that's

what we usually think of when we talk

about water it's around when it's warm

enough for the ice to melt

the third form of water is gas also

called water vapor

when water gets hot enough to evaporate

it becomes vapor it is made of tiny

drops of water in the air that we can't

see with just our eyes it happens when

things are really heating up and when it

gets cooler the water vapor turns into

liquid water again like the tiny drops

of water on the grass in the morning

i never knew water could be so many

things solid liquid and gas water sure

we never found out where snow comes from

it was just air a minute ago

the air must be full of tiny drops of

water that we can't see what cedar

called water vapor the thermometer says

the air is really cold this high up so

the cold window must have made the water

vapor near the window cold and when

water vapor gets colder it becomes

liquid water like those drops

and like that rain outside

wow these snowflakes sure are beautiful

know what i love about snowflakes no two

are alike just like our fingerprints

what exactly do you do here i study

precipitation which mostly means i get

wet a lot for i will not rest until i

know everything there is to know about

water

take this experiment for example an ice

cube placed in warm water the lower part

of the ice cube the part under the water

will melt faster making the upper part

heavier and

there it goes the ice cube will tip over

and over as it melts

then there's this experiment two ice

cube trays

one filled with snow the other with ice

which one will have more water after

melting

hmm

i think the ice cubes because the ice

cubes don't have as much air inside them

as the snowflakes

see the snowflakes are looser with more

air in them well let's see

that's right good for you

but i haven't shown you the best part of

my laboratory the great outdoors and i'm

predicting the salt and the pretzel will

melt the snow but the snow on the cookie

will remain

and this is me most important experiment

measuring rainfall and snowfall this

device has a heater that melts the snow

into water it will tell me if the amount

of precipitation is changing from year

to year

i've recorded the measurements for years

in this journal and over there i'm

experimenting with different rain dances

and when lots and lots of snowflakes

fall down that's called the snow day
