Alma: "No Sleep 'Til New Years"

Tío Mateo and our cousin Yvette are visiting from Puerto Rico!

We've been waiting for them all morning.

[Car honking]

Junior: They're here! Alma: [Gasp] Finally!

Junior: Woohoo! Alma: Alright!

Junior: Yesss!

Alma: Woohoo! Junior: Yay!

Yvette/Mateo: [Shivering] Brr!

Junior: ¡Tío Mateo!

Alma: Hi Yvette! Yvette: ¡Hola Prima! Junior: Hola.

Junior: Hi! Yvette: ¡Hola! Alma: Hola Tío Mateo!

Mateo: You both got so tall!

[Inhale] Ooh, I knew it would be cold, but this feels like the North Pole!

Papi: Welcome to winter in the Bronx, hermano.

Alma: Hurry, prima! We have a Christmas present for you!

Yvette: But Christmas was 5 days ago.

Junior/Alma: We know!

Yvette: Oooh!

Alma: Merry Christmas.

Yvette: Nice to meet you, Captain Banana and Steggie.

I'm Esteban, Yvette's new friend.

Junior: Roar!

Kids: [Giggle]

Alma: I think Yvette loves her present.

Junior: [Sigh] I miss Christmas already. It's the best.

[Party horn]

Mateo: You know what else is the best? New Year's Eve!

Which is tomorrow. And we'll be partying until midnight!

[Party horn]

Junior: Um, excuse me... how will we be partying?

Alma: Yeah? We usually just watch a movie, then go to sleep.

Papi: Ohh, Mateo and Yvette celebrate el Año Nuevo with family, food, music...

And lots of dancing. [Party horn]

Yvette: Yep, that's why we brought some party stuff from la isla to the Bronx!

[Party horn and rattle shaking]

Papi: [Chuckle]

Alma: Wow, really? Junior: Ooh, cool!

Yvette: And we haven't even told you the best part yet!

[Party horn and rattle shaking]

Junior: There's more?!

Mateo: Right before midnight we light estrellitas.

Then we count down to the new year.

[Party horn]

Yvette: And then, everyone throws a bucket of water out the door!

Alma: Huh? Why?

Mateo: It's our way of saying goodbye to the old year.

Alma: Sounds way way wayyy fun!

Yvette: Oh, it is.

Mateo: That's why New Year's is my favorite holiday!

Papi: Niños, can you start decorating?

Mateo and I are gonna shop for all the food we'll need tomorrow.

Alma: Of course! Junior: Sure! Yvette: Seguro.

Junior: I can't wait for New Year's Eve!

We never get to stay up that late.

Alma: We've never even been awake past 9:15.

How are we gonna make it all the way to midnight?!

Yvette: No se preocupen. I made it last year and the year before, so I'm an expert now.

Junior: Tell us how to do it, por favor.

Yvette: Here's the plan...

First, we get a good night's sleep. So when we wake up tomorrow, we're not sleepy.

Alma: So don't wake up too early to play.

Junior: Mmm, okay, I'll try.

[Train rumbles by]

Junior: Good moooorning! Did I do it? Did I wake up late?

Alma: Yep, you made it to 9 o'clock!

Junior: This is the latest I've ever woken up in my life!

Yvette: ¡Wepa! We're off to a great start!

No sleep ‘til New Year's!

Alma/Junior: No sleep ‘til New Year's!

Yvette: Woo hoo!

Mateo: Happy New Year's Eve, niños!

Are you ready to kick off the big day with a big breakfast?

Yvette: You're gonna wanna eat enough to have energy for the whole day and night.

Alma: Got it!

Can I have an extra sausage, ¿por favor?

Papi: Sure.

Alma: Thanks.

Mami: Mwah!

Papi: Here you go.

Mami: Mmm, café con leche, just how I like it. Gracias, mi amor.

Junior: Done! What's next?

Yvette: We always clean our house so it's nice and neat.

Mateo: It's never too early to kick off a new year!

Alma: Sa-weet! I'll help Papi put the laundry away.

Papi: Sounds good to me!

Yvette: I call vacuuming!

It's my favorite.

Junior: And I'm gonna clean up with Mami!

Mami: [Chuckle]

Yvette: My papi and I like to go for one last walk before the year ends. Pero... brrr!

I've never done it when it was this cold before.

Alma: Welcome to winter in the Bronx, prima.

Kids: [Giggle]

Papi: Coming through.

Mateo: ¡Wepa! Last walk of the year!

[Chacho barks] Mami: Whoooa!

Alma: Let's go! Junior: Yeah!

Yvette/Junior: Coldcoldcoldcoldcold!

Junior: How much longer ‘til midnight?

Papi: It's only a little after two.

So you've got a looong ways to go.

Junior: [Sigh]

Mami: [Chuckle] You don't have to make it to midnight, ya know.

Junior: I want to! This only happens once a year!

No sleep ‘til New Year's!

Alma/Yvette: No sleep ‘til New Year's!

Yvette: Well actually, a little sleep. It's naptime.

Alma: For real? But we just woke up a few hours ago.

Junior: Um, excuse me... what if I don't take naps anymore?

Yvette: You nap.

Alma: But what if I'm not tired?

Junior: Or I'm just too excited?

Yvette: You nap. Trust me...

If you want to stay awake ‘til midnight, a nap's definitely going to help.

Alma: [Yawn]

I haven't taken a nap in such a long time, I forgot how hungry it makes me.

Mateo: What's something new you want to do in the new year?

Junior: I want to learn how to whistle.

[Junior attempts to whistle] Hoo- hoo- hoo!

Yvette: I want to be able to swim in the deep end of the pool.

Alma: I want to read a hundred books.

Mami: Love it!

Junior: What are we doing after this?

Yvette/Mateo: Ahh, we dance!

Family: Sa-weet! Yeah! My fav! ¡A bailar! Ha ha!

Alma: I'm wide awake and ready to break it down!

♪ [Music playing] Kids: Oh ya, woo! ¡Wepa! Woo woo! Yay! ¡Wepa!

[Clapping] Mateo: [Chuckle] Papi: ¡Wepa!

Alma: Are we good or... [yawn]

Huh? I can't be getting tired. That's impossible. I napped!

[Yawn]

Junior: [Gasp] Alma, you're yawning!

Yvette: No problem!

If you have to yawn, turn it into a song.

You won't be tired anymore. It's like this...

[Yawn-sings: “Twinkle, twinkle, little star”. ]

Kids: [Yawn-sing: “...how I wonder what you are”]

Mami: Does all that yawn -singing mean you're ready for bed?

Alma: No! Junior: No way! Yvette: Uh-uh!

Junior: Um, [yawn] excuse me... is it almost midnight?

Mateo: It's 9 o'clock. Getting closer!

Yvette: A few more hours! No sleep ‘til New Year's!

Alma/Junior: No sleep ‘til New Year's!

Junior: [Yawn] I'm just a teeeeny bit sleepy...

Yvette: I know what will help.

¡Vengan!

Junior: [Sigh] I'm coming.

Alma: Okay, Yvette, colder than cold water, coming up!

Yvette: Now, we drink.

Yvette: Ahh, cold! Alma: Ahh! Brain freeze!

Alma: Wow! I don't feel tired anymore!

Yvette: Told ya, works every time.

Alma: Midnight, here we come!

[Junior snoring]

Yvette: Junior?

Junior: Is it midnight yet?

[Yawn] Then I'm going to sleep.

Alma: But we haven't done the countdown, or the estrellitas, or the buckets of water.

You don't want to stay up for that?

Junior: Na unh. Too tired.

Papi: Aayy, ready for bed, mijo?

Junior: [Sleepy] Uhh huh.

Mami: It's okay if you wanna go too.

Alma: I'm sleepy. But I don't want to miss the countdown to New Year's.

It only comes once a year!

[Yawn] I gotta think about this...

Hmmm, birthdays only come once a year too. And they're really special...

But I remember last year, we celebrated Junior's birthday early.

So that everyone could be there.

Mateo: It's never too early to kick off a new year!

Alma: Never too early, huh...?

Oh! I know what to do! [Yawn]

Wait!

I'm tired...

So I'm gonna go to sleep.

Yvette: Oookay. I get it. Too bad you'll miss the countdown to midnight...

Alma: Well... I was wondering...

Would it be okay if we celebrate New Year's Eve now... for me and Junior?

Matteo: ¡Buena idea! Yvette: Sure!

Alma: I have the sa-weetest ideas.

Family: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...

Happy New Year! [cheers, party horns, rattles and shakers]

Papi: Ha ha ha, come here. Mwah! [Party shaker rattles]

Que bueno. [chuckle]

Yvette: Feliz año nuevo!

Mateo: Feliz año nuevo!

Mateo/Papi: ¡WEPA!

Ah ha! That's it!

Matteo: ¡Hermanito! Papi: ¡Hermano!

[Party horns, rattles and shakers] [Cheers]

Kids: [Giggle]

Yvette: Ready for the best part?!

Alma: Goodbye, old year!

Junior: Hello, new year!

Yvette: ¡WEPA!

Family: ¡Wepa!

Alma: [Yawn] Now I'm ready to go to sleep.

It's okay if you want to go to bed too, prima.

Yvette: [Yawn] Sounds like a good idea.

Yvette: ¡Buenas noches! Matteo: ¡Buenas noches, bendiciones.

Alma: Buenas noches! Junior: Good night!

Papi: Buenas noches.

Yvette: ¡Prospero año nuevo!

Mateo: ¡Prospero año nuevo!

Alma: I'm happy to be going to sleep ‘cause now the new year will come even sooner.

[Yawn] Happy New Year!

[♪♪]

Alma: "Nurse Alma"

Announcer: We've got an exciting baseball game here, folks!

[Crowd cheering on TV] Announcer: Absolutely unbelievable.

Abuelo: This is it... this is it...

Announcer: It's the bottom of the 9th. The Sweat Sox just need a run to win.

Alma: I can't look!

Abuelo: C'mon, lucky socks! Do your thing.

Alma: Abuelo always wears his lucky socks when his team plays.

I really hope they work today...

[Sounds of bat hitting a ball, crowd cheering] Alma: I gotta look!

Family: [Gasp]

Announcer: It's going, going...

Abuelo/Announcer: Going, gone!

Alma/Abuelo/Announcer: Homerunnn!!!

[Crowd cheering on TV] Family: [Cheering]

Alma: The Sweat Sox win!

Family: [Cheering]

Announcer: What an incredible win for the Sweat Sox. They've done it again!

Abuelo: ¡Wepaa-[back cracks] -AHH!

Oh, I mean, yay.

Oh, ahhh. I tweaked my back. Ouch...

Junior: Um, excuse me... what does that mean?

Abuelo: It means I hurt my back muscles when I cheered, like this...

Yow! Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay...

Alma: But I jumped up too, and I feel fine.

Abuelo: Ahh. You're kids. Your bodies stretch better than mine.

Papi: I think ice will help.

Mami: And I'll get a blanket to make you comfy.

Abuelo: Pero...Ohh, oh oh!

Mami: Ahh. No ‘pero.' You have to rest.

We'll do everything for you.

Niños, help your Abuelo get comfortable, por favor.

Alma: Cuidado. Slooowly, slow.

Junior: Don't go too fast.

Abuelo: Uh, ah, ah...

Ahhhh, gracias, niños.

Junior: Do you want your pillow?

Abuelo: Mmm, sí, por favor.

Ooo, ohhh. [Sigh]

Alma: Do you want one for your feet too?

Abuelo: Oh, yes, muchas gracias.

Oh h* h*! [Laughing] That tickles!

Gracias. [Sigh]

[Chacho barking]

Alma: [Gasp]

Abuelo: Chacho-ayy! My back! My back!

Junior: I'll get your sock for you.

[Chacho barking]

Junior: [In an Abuelo voice] Chachoooo! Come back here with my lucky sock.

Alma: Junior sounds just like Abuelo.

Abuelo: Wait! I gotta walk Chacho and make dinner, and...

Papi: I'll walk Chacho.

Mami: And I'll make dinner.

Abuelo: Pero...

Alma: Like Mami said... ‘No pero...'

You have to rest. We'll do everything for you.

Abuelo: [Chuckle] Okay, okay.

[Sigh] Está bien. You sound just like your mother!

[Sigh]

Alma: [Whispering] What should we do for Abuelo now?

Mami: Nothing.

Alma: Nothing?

Mami: Nothing. We let him rest.

Then hopefully he'll be better tomorrow.

Alma: Mwah!

Abuelo: Gracias.

Alma: Good morning... er... Abuelo?

I hope he's feeling better.

Abuelo: [Singing]

Abuelo: ¡Ahh, buenos días, Almita!

I feel so good I could cheer, almost as hard as I did yesterday!

¡Wepa! [Chuckle]

Alma: Are you okay?

Abuelo: Better than okay!

That was just what I needed. Thanks for letting me rest.

So what are you doing today?

Alma: Eddie's coming to play all day.

We're going to watch a movie and eat popcorn!

Abuelo: ‘Eyy nice! Have fun!

Tia Gloria: Mwah!

Alma: Yes! Time for our Alma-Eddie All Day Play Date!

Hi, primo! Come on in!

Eddie: [Yawn] Hey, Alma.

Alma: We're gonna have an ah-may-zing day!

We'll watch Gators of the Galaxy Part Five, eat popcorn and then...

Eddie: [Yawn]

Nice!

Alma: You okay?

Eddie: I'm feeling kinda... meh.

But I'm excited to watch the movie with you...

Mami: Hi Eddie, your mamá told me you had a sleepover at Becka's,

and you stayed up late beatboxing?

Eddie: Yeah, I guess it was pretty late.

And I do feel tired and... kinda have a headache.

Mami: How ‘bout you lie down and try to take a nap?

Eddie: Yeah, okay.

Alma: Take a nap...?! Oh no...

But what about our play date?

Mami: Maybe Eddie will feel better when he wakes up.

But for now, he should rest.

Mwah!

Eddie: Thanks, Titi Lulú.

Alma: Aww...

Oh, I know!

When Abuelo didn't feel well we did everything for him and he got better faster. So...

I can take care of Eddie Mambo!

Mami: That's my Almita.

Mwah!

Alma: Okay Mami.

Do you need ice?

Eddie: Huh? No thanks.

I'm just gonna sleep a little...

Alma: Okay.

Oh, I know.

Eddie: [Sigh]

Alma: Ooh! Maybe Eddie wants a pillow for his feet too.

Eddie: [Giggle] Hey, that tickles! [Giggle]

Alma: Have a great nap!

Eddie: [Yawn]

Uhhh, are you gonna watch me sleep?

Alma: Will that help you feel better faster?

Eddie: I don't think so.

I just need to get comfy so I can sleep.

Alma: Hmm, what's the best way for Eddie to get comfier?

Oh, I know! More pillows!

[Whispering] Be right back.

Are you comfy now?

Eddie: No. This is too many pillows.

Ahh, unh, unh, unh!

Alma: Ahhh, you're right.

But! You know what's way way wayyy comfy?

Blankets! Now he's comfy and warm.

Eddie: Ahh! Ehh! Really hot!

Alma: No problem. I'll cool you off.

Eddie: Alma! I'm good... really.

Why don't you just start watching the movie without me?

Alma: Ooh, great idea!

[Movie starts playing loudly] [Remote clicks]

Alma: [Whispering] It's starting. The Gators are running around...

[Whispering] And the popcorn is delicious.

[Whispering] How you feeling?

Eddie: Same.

Alma: [Gator of the Galaxy voice] How ‘bout now?

Eddie: [Annoyed] Still the same.

Alma: [Sigh] Why is it taking Eddie for-eeever to feel better?

I gotta think about this...

Mami: You have to rest. We'll do everything for you.

Alma: I'm doing what Mami said. I did everything for Eddie so he can rest.

Are you comfy now?

Eddie: No.

Alma: Blankets!

Eddie: Ahh! Hot! Really hot!

Alma: I'll cool you off.

Huh, but am I letting him rest? Hmm.

Do you need ice?

Eddie: Hunh? No thanks.

Alma: [Whispering] How you feeling?

Eddie: Same.

Alma: [Gator of the Galaxy voice] How ‘bout now?

Eddie: [Annoyed] Still the same.

Alma: Eep! Eddie just wanted to sleep but I kept waking him up.

I know what to do.

[Turns off movie]

Alma: I've decided that I'm gonna leave Eddie alone and let him rest.

Mami: Good idea, mijita.

Hopefully he'll feel better when he wakes up. Just try to be patient.

Alma: I'll try. But being patient is way, way, wayyy hard!

Mami: It is. Keeping busy always helps me when I'm trying to be patient.

Alma: Okay. Anything is easier than waiting.

Mami: Wanna take the recycling outside?

Alma: Sure!

[Humming]

Hey!

This gives me a sa-weet idea!

It's Alma. Explorer of wild animals and whatever...

Oooh, a wild Bronx squirrel!

[Squirrel chitters]

Hmm, mmm...

[Chicken clucks]

And a Bronx chicken!

Hey! Granny Isa might be on that plane!

This cardboard roll is way, way, wayyy ah-may-zing.

What else can I do with it?

I'm going to call you: “Kid Paper Roll.”

Kid Paper Roll, meet Captain Banana.

Mami: Almita, Tía Gloria's here to pick up Eddie.

Alma: Okay Mami.

I wonder if he's better!

Eddie! How ya feeling?!

Eddie: A little better. Wanna play tomorrow?

Alma: Sure! ¡Hasta mañana, primo!

Eddie: Bye.

Alma: Welp. Looks like I gotta be patient for a little while longer.

[Knocking on the door]

Alma: Eddie!

Eddie: I'm feeling muuuuch better today. Ready to play?

Alma: Yup, after breakfast.

But you can play with Kid Paper Roll until I'm done.

Eddie: Who?

Alma: [Silly voice] Me! I'm Kid Paper Roll.

Eddie: Nice to meet you.

[Rapping] They call me Eddie Mambo for this simple reason.

[Rapping] I salsa everywhere, ev'ry day, and every season.

Oh yeah!

Alma: Looks like Eddie's pretty good at keeping busy and being patient. Just like me.
