it's all about the old west what's the

old west

it's a time in american history from

1860 to 1890

in the area west of the mississippi

river a time of cowboys and indians

explorers

fur trappers and miners and outlaws and

sheriffs

farmers and townsfolk it sounds like a

fascinating time period

oh it was it all began when the pioneers

started moving west

here's the song from that period it's

so what was the old west like it was a

very exciting place

it was wide open countryside some of the

most beautiful in the world

and customs it's also the language and

the style of dress

and homes and art oh i get it

it's like the way biggles and bagel land

are different than people

and the people world exactly it's time

rodeo champion charmaine rodman she's

here right now with our own janet vapes

you're welcome first of all how old were

you when you first

started riding i was six years old when

i started competing and i don't really

remember

the first time i ever rode a horse what

kind of riding did you do at first

um i started off bareback riding because

i was too little to put a saddle on my

horse and so

when i was big enough to put the saddle

on my horse then i started riding in a

saddle

did you grow up on a ranch uh-huh i grew

up on a ranch and

and i rode with my dad and my sisters

and we looked after the cattle and all

kinds of fun stuff

tell us about your horse my horse's name

is camper he got his name because

he's campered around the barrels my dad

thought of his name

he's a brown horse and he's 17 years old

he's a great horse i've won over a

million dollars on him

and he's a lot of fun he's wonderful is

your buckle one of the things you won

i have 10 buckles just like this and

this is what we work for all year long

to try and win a gold buckle at the end

of the year

can you explain to us what barrel racing

is barrel racing is a timed event it's

run around

three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern

it's timed with an electric timer

and when you cross the timer it starts

your time and when you cross back over

and on the way

when you're finished it stops the time

rodeo riders are really strong

how do you guys stay in shape i stay in

shape by riding

and when we're traveling we have to

clean stalls and carry water buckets and

so i don't actually go and work out but

it's a workout just having horses

are there a lot of real cowboys left

there's lots of real cowboys left

what advice do you have for kids who

want to be rodeo riders

well just to have fun and work hard and

and

love your horse well thank you very much

native americans are number 10 native

americans have been living in north

america

for 250 000 years

number nine indians invented the papoose

the original baby carrier number eight

the basket makers skilled craftsmen

lived in the southwest since the year

100. number seven the cliff dwellers

were skilled architects

who carved their houses high into the

rock cliffs of arizona and new mexico

number six when columbus first came to

america

there were at least two million native

americans already living here

number five the northwest coast indians

carved totem poles lived in wooden

houses and built boats

number four the plains indians like the

blackfoot and cheyenne

were buffalo hunters number three the

plateau

indians like the nez purse were skilled

basket makers

and hunters number two the indians of

the

eastern woodlands lived in dome-shaped

wigwams

and carved birch bark canoes and the

number one most fascinating fact about

native americans

is the indian cultures that took

thousands of years to develop

were largely destroyed in 30 years of

western expansion
