male narrator: As our heroes
head for Ecruteak City,
a strange sound suddenly
directs their attention skyward.
- [trilling]
all: Huh?
[Fearow cawing]
- [frightened coos]
- [cawing]
- [trilling]
- Pika!
- [cawing]
- [coos]
- [singing]
Pokémon, Pokémon, Pokémon
- Let's do it.
I wanna be the very best
Like no one ever was
Ever was, ever was
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my cause
My whole life has led to this
Time to test my skills
I know I just can't miss
Gonna show the world
Born to be a winner
- Johto
- Born to be a champion
Born to be a winner
Born to be the very best
- Pokémon
- Johto
- Born to be a winner
Pokémon
- [frightened cooing]
- [cawing]
- Oh no, that big Fearow's
attacking that little Pidgey.
- I choose you, Noctowl.
- [trills]
- Noctowl,
go and help that Pidgey.
- [trills]
- [cawing]
- [trills]
- [caws]
- [trills]
- [caws]
- [trills]
- [frightened caw]
- [roars]
[fire rushing]
- [cawing]
- That Fearow acted like
it just saw a ghost.
- Noctowl's Hypnosis
Attack scared it away.
- And you saved that Pidgey.
- [trills]
- [squeaking]
- The Pidgey!
- [trills]
[all gasping]
- [trills]
- There it is!
- [coos]
- Noctowl,
go down and get it.
- [trills]
- [frightened cooing]
- [trilling]
- [coos]
[cooing weakly]
- [trills softly]
- [coos weakly]
- There.
It'll be good as new in no time.
- [coos happily]
- [trills]
- [coos curiously]
- Look, it's carrying something.
- Yeah.
Hey, let's take it with us,
and maybe we can find
its trainer.
- Good idea.
- Togepi.
- [coos]
- Maybe somebody
at the Pokémon Center
will know who your trainer is.
[Pidgey coos overhead]
- Wow, there sure are
lots of Pidgey here.
- And look.
They're all carrying something,
just like this one is.
I wonder if they all have
the same trainer as you do.
- [squeaks]
- Ken, is that you?
Where have you been?
Are you okay?
- [squeaks]
- I was so worried about you.
What's that bandage?
What did you do?
Try to hurt my friend?
all: Us?
- We weren't the ones
who hurt your Pidgey.
We patched its wing up after
it got attacked by a Fearow.
- Huh?
- [squeaks]
- It was in pretty bad
shape when we found it.
- I knew something was wrong.
I'm sorry I blamed you guys.
- You should be pretty proud
of that Pidgey of yours.
- Oh, it's not mine, it's
my grandpa's carrier Pidgey.
- His carrier Pidgey?
- Yeah, look.
- [coos, taps at window]
- Oh, thanks very much.
- See?
The Pidgey fly stuff all over.
For more than years,
my Grandpa's been sending
a whole flock of them with
packages and newspapers
to the islands nearby
that don't have
regular ferry service.
Everybody here calls my
Grandpa the "Pidgey Express Man"
'cause he was the one
who came up
with the idea of carrier Pidgey.
- He must be famous.
- Pika.
- It's hard to train
the Pidgey
and sometimes they get lost,
but I wanna be a Pidgey
Express Man someday too.
- [coos]
- By the way, I'm Malachi.
- My name's Ash.
- And I'm Misty.
- I'm Brock,
and this is Pikachu and Togepi.
- Pikachu.
- Togepi.
- [laughs] Carrier Pidgey.
That's a moneymaking concept.
- All we have to do
is steal those Pidgey,
and we're in business.
- You just never know
when something wonderful
will turn up.
- Wobbuffet.
- I said "wonderful,"
not "blunder-full."
- Wobb--
- All right,
let's go grab that one.
- What are you talking about?
Catching one carrier Pidgey
isn't going
to get us anywhere.
- Well, what do we do then?
- We're going to catch
every single one.
- But how do we do that?
- How should I know?
I've already had
my idea for the day.
- Oh, right.
- Hey, I got a good idea.
both: Really?
- Just leave it all to Meowth.
- That's it over there.
That's the Pidgey Express
building.
We live there too.
My grandpa's been training
carrier Pidgey
since he was my age.
Grandpa says that if you
spend enough time
with your Pidgey, after a while,
you can get to tell
what all of their chirps mean.
- That's pretty cool.
- This is the Pidgey coop.
[Pidgey cooing]
- All right, pay attention.
Wingy, you go here.
Flingy, you go here
Dingy, you go here.
And Norman, you go down here.
[all cooing]
- Look who I found, Grandpa.
- You found Ken.
- It got attacked
by a Fearow,
but Ash and Brock and Misty
chased it away.
- Well, thank you very much.
- [coos]
- You were lucky,
old friend.
- [coos]
- And we were lucky
you came along.
Why don't you come inside
and have some refreshments
with us?
- Tog, Tog.
- Pika.
- Can your carrier Pidgey
fly messages anyplace
in the whole world?
- No, I'm afraid they don't
have the stamina for that,
Brock.
- How do you train them
to find their way?
- I bet it's some kind of
ancient secret.
- I hate to disappoint you,
Ash,
but there's really no secret
to it.
All I do is fly the Pidgey
in a mini-blimp
and show them the routes
over and over again.
- Wow.
- That must take years.
- You must be a
really great trainer.
- Not really.
It takes a
lot more time than talent.
- Hey, Grandpa, I'm gonna go
and check on the Pidgey, okay?
- [coos]
- Your grandson really loves
working with those Pidgey too.
Guess he'll be Pidgey Express
Man someday.
- I know Malachi
would like nothing better
than to take over the business
for me when I retire.
Unfortunately,
that won't happen.
- But he's the perfect one
to take over the Pidgey Express.
- Maybe that's true,
but when I retire,
the Pidgey Express ends.
- But it's your family business.
- Why would you end it?
- The world is a much
different place today
than it was when I started
the business, Ash.
We just can't compete
with airplanes and email.
And you have to dedicate your
life to a business like this.
On stormy nights,
you can't go to sleep
until the very last Pidgey
returns safely
from making its delivery.
And when the Pidgey
gets lonely and scared,
you have to sit up with
them until they fall asleep.
I couldn't even get away
when my son got married
or when my grandson was born.
I've missed a lot
of things in life
that I don't want Malachi
to miss.
all: Oh.
- [coos]
- Don't worry, Speedy.
You look better already.
- [coos]
- [coos]
- Oh, no, you have to take off
one more day, Crasher.
You can fly tomorrow.
- [coos]
- [cooing]
- Hey, cut it out, Ken.
I got a lot of work to do.
[giggling] Come on, quit it.
- He really loves those
Pidgey, doesn't he?
- Togepi.
- He'll be so sad when his
grandfather closes down.
- I think the Pidgey
will be too.
- Pika.
- [coos]
- [laughs]
[phone ringing]
- Hello.
Pidgey Express Man.
- Hello, this is the Pokémon
Center on Way Away Island.
- Ah, Nurse Joy.
- I'm sorry to bother you,
but I'm getting worried
about the carrier Pidgey.
The medicine still
hasn't arrived.
Have the Pidgey left yet?
- Yes, they have.
- Oh, that's what I was
afraid of.
It shouldn't take them this long
to get over here.
Maybe they got lost.
- You're right, Nurse Joy.
Something must be wrong.
Where could they be?
- Grandpa, what's the matter?
- The Pidgey I sent
to Nurse Joy three hours ago
haven't delivered
their packages yet.
- What's worse is,
they were carrying medicines
for the sick Pokémon
at her Pokémon Center.
- All right.
I'll go and find them.
- What?
- How are you gonna do that?
- [laughs]
[garage door opens]
- [coos]
- Malachi, what do you
think you're doing?
[all gasp]
- What's that?
- It's the blimp Grandpa
uses for training,
and I'm gonna use it
to find those Pidgey.
- Can you squeeze
a few passengers in with you?
- Pika!
- Who's that Pokémon?
It's Mewtwo!
- This could be dangerous,
Malachi.
Let me go instead.
- Somebody has to stay here
and wait
in case the Pidgey come back.
Don't worry, Grandpa,
I can handle it.
- But you're not ready
for a job like this.
- You weren't ready
when you were my age either,
but you went ahead anyway.
Just give me the chance.
- But Malachi!
- See you soon, Grandpa.
- [coos]
- Malachi.
- Don't worry,
I'm gonna help find
your Pidgey too.
- There you go sh**ting
your mouth off again.
- Huh?
- Those carrier Pidgey
could've gone in
a hundred different directions,
Ash.
How are you ever gonna
find them?
- Don't forget I have a
one Pokémon search party.
- [trills]
- Go, Noctowl.
Go and find those missing
carrier Pidgey.
- [trills]
- That's a great idea.
- [trills]
- Malachi,
just follow that Noctowl.
- Okay, right.
[muffled cooing]
- There's another
carrier Pidgey spotted,
yards dead ahead.
- This is almost too easy.
We float around
and catch dozens of Pidgey
with no muss, no fuss,
and for once, no annoying twerps
to deal with.
- And don't forget, Jess,
we get to keep whatever
our feathered friends
happen to be carrying.
- That's a little secret the
Boss doesn't need to know about.
- We got still
Pokémon to swipe.
Quit gabbing and keep grabbing.
- Aye, aye, sir.
Pidgey Retrieval System
activated.
[computer beeping]
[vacuuming]
- [coos]
[muffled cooing]
- Bagged another one.
- One more Pidgey in
our carrier Pidgey carrier.
- Let's see if there's
any more flying around up here.
Hey, it's them.
- Let me see.
[groans]
Just our luck.
It's the twerps.
- If they see our balloon,
there's sure to be trouble.
- Then we better get out
of here on the double.
- Not to worry, teammates.
I prepared for just this sort
of sit-chi-ation.
We're gonna disappear
into thin air.
[smoke hissing]
- Help.
The balloon's on fire.
- I'm too young to fry.
- Take it easy.
I got you covered.
- We got to hurry.
We got to find those Pidgey
before they get too far.
- Yeah.
But I don't see
them anywhere.
- [trills]
- What is it, Noctowl?
Do you see something over there?
- [coos]
- It sounds like Ken's
picking up something too.
- They must sense that the
Pidgey are someplace nearby.
Do you see them?
- Well, I'm looking as hard
as I can,
but the only thing I see
is clouds.
- With my brand-new
Nimble Nimbus Instant
Cloud Cover Machine,
those little brats
will never spot our balloon
again.
- Meowth,
I can't breathe.
- What if we choke?
- Quit complaining.
It ain't that bad.
The smoke cloud's okay
to breathe if those kids
get lost in a hurry,
but there's a cumulus effect.
[screams,
coughs]
- Any sign of them yet, Brock?
- No, nothing in the sky
but clouds.
- I can't figure it out.
Where could all the Pidgey
have disappeared to, Ken?
- [coos]
- [trills]
- Ken, what are you doing?
It's only a cloud.
- Pika, Pika!
- Maybe, but there sure is
something weird about it.
- [trills]
- [coos]
[wind howling]
- Hey, what's going on here?
[both coughing]
- Prepare for trouble
by backing off.
- I'd like to get rid
of this hacking cough.
- To protect the world
from devastation.
- To unite all peoples
within our nation.
- To denounce the evils
of truth and love.
[coughing]
- To extend our reach
to the stars above.
[coughing]
- Jessie.
- James.
- Team Rocket blast off
at the speed of light.
- Surrender now...
[coughs]
Or prepare to...
fight, fight, fight.
- Meowth,
that's right.
[Team Rocket continues coughing]
Next time, I'll know better
than to keep my head
in the clouds.
- As bad as that was,
it taught us all
an important lesson.
- It may be cloudy, but our
motto always shines through.
- Wobbuffet.
- Yes, that's right, Wobbuffet,
I--
Hey, who asked you
for your opinion?
You're never right.
- Wobbuffet.
- It's them again.
- Pika.
- Hey, look down there.
[muffled cooing]
- Something's in that bag.
- It must be the Pidgey.
Team Rocket's trying
to steal them.
- What do you think
you're doing?
Give me back those Pidgey!
- No way, fly boy.
You're not getting any of these
Pidgey back without a battle.
Go, Arbok!
- Arbok.
- Arbok, Arbok,
Arbok, Arbok...
[yelps]
[all screaming]
boing!
- Quick!
Use your Poison Sting Attack.
- [hissing]
- [trills]
- [coos]
- Ken!
- Noctowl, do something.
- [coos]
- [trills]
- Use Poison Sting
on the twerps too.
- Char!
- Suddenly,
I feel less nefarious.
- Wobbuffet.
- [hissing]
- Looks like Team Rocket's
drifting off again.
- They're acting goofier
than they usually do.
- [trills]
- I get it.
Noctowl used its Hypnosis Attack
on Arbok
and on Team Rocket.
- Pika.
- Noctowl knocked
them for a loop.
- Togepi.
- Now's our chance to
try to rescue the Pidgey.
- Let's do it, Ken.
We got to get our friends
out of that bag and fast.
- [coos]
- Hurry, Noctowl,
before the Hypnosis wears off.
- [trills]
[muffled cooing]
- [cooing, grunting]
- Ken, pull harder!
- [trilling, grunting]
- You got to get them out.
There's not much time.
- Pikachu.
- [trills]
[all cooing]
- [coos]
- All right.
- Great.
- Yeah!
- The Pidgey are finally free.
[all cooing]
- [hissing]
- You're doing splendidly.
- Wobbuffet.
- Keep it up, Arbok.
- Hey, I wonder why all
of them Poison Stings
ain't hurting them.
- Arbok!
all: Huh?
- Where did they go?
[Pidgey cooing]
all: Hey!
- How'd the Pidgey get out
of the bag?
- And how did those little
twerps get over there?
- [trilling]
- It was Noctowl.
- Instead of battling
the twerps,
we must have been battling
one of Noctowl's
Hypnosis illusions.
- Wobba, Wobb.
[Pidgey cooing]
- Them Pidgey
don't look too happy.
- Wobbuffet.
- Crank up that propeller!
- Quick, Ash, we can't
let them get away!
- Pikachu,
use your Thunderbolt.
- Pikachu.
Pika...
Chu!
[electric buzzing]
- Go get them, Noctowl.
- [trills]
- Everybody, let's go!
[Pidgey cooing]
- [screams]
They're heading for the balloon.
[all screaming]
- Stop!
[Pidgey pecking]
[all exclaiming]
[air rushing]
- Our beautiful Pidgey plan
is ruined!
- It's going up in smoke.
[screams]
- Do you have to mention smoke?
all: Team Rocket's blasting off
again!
- Wobb--ah--ah!
- We did it.
- Pikachu!
- Togepi.
- The Pidgey did great.
- [coos]
- Well, Ken, you really
earned your wings.
[Pidgey cooing]
- Thank you all so much
for bringing this medicine.
Now, I'll be able to nurse
all the sick and injured
Pokémon back to health.
[Pidgey cooing]
- And thanks to all of you
for saving the Pidgey.
I'm so grateful.
- Just doing our job.
As the Pidgey Express Man
would say,
"We always deliver."
- Mm.
- Pika.
- Thanks.
See you.
- So long.
- Pika! Pika!
- Good-bye, Nurse Joy!
- [singing]
Pokémon Johto!
[singing]
Pokémon Johto!
- That's great news, Nurse Joy.
They all got there safe
and sound.
What a relief.
- I just wanted to call
and thank you personally.
Because of your carrier Pidgey
and that grandson of yours,
all the sick Pokémon
are getting well again.
- Well, I'm glad the
Pidgey Express could help.
Thanks again for calling,
Nurse Joy.
Bye, now.
Malachi came through
just like he said.
- Ken did it!
Ken!
- [coos]
[cooing happily]
- Now you're ready to become
a full-fledged member
of the Carrier Pidgey Corps.
- [coos]
- Well,
looks like Malachi
can handle the Pidgey
himself now.
- Pika.
- I guess he learned a lot
about training Pidgey
from his grandfather.
- It's too bad he won't be
able to pass along
what he's learned
to his grandchildren.
- [coos]
- Aww, cut it out.
That tickles.
- Malachi.
- Yes, what is it, Grandpa?
- I'm thinking about who will
run the business
when I retire.
- Does that mean you're
gonna let me take over
and be the Pidgey Express Man?
- It's possible, I suppose,
if you prove
to be a professional.
- Yay! Yay!
I'm pretty professional.
- If this
gets you all excited,
you're still an amateur.
And a Pidgey Express
Man is a professional.
- Yes, sir,
I'll try my best
to become a professional
like you.
- Now, that's a little
more like it.
Carry on, Malachi.
You've got a lot to learn.
- Right.
- Congratulations, Malachi.
- Looks like you'll carry on
the family tradition.
- You deserve to.
- Thanks.
- Pika, Pika.
- [coos]
- Bye, Malachi.
- See you.
- Good luck with your Pidgey.
- Pika, Pika!
- Thanks a lot, guys.
- [coos]
narrator:
As our heroes wave good-bye
to their new friends,
they know
the future of the Pidgey Express
is in good hands.
They also know that exciting
new adventures await them
just beyond the horizon.
- Let's do it.
