[dramatic string music intro]

THE FINAL PROBLEM

-Where am I?
-[dramatic film music]

Is anyone there?

[lightning cracks]

-[Benjamin] Watson!
-[Moriarty laughs]

[Benjamin] Is that you?
Get me out of here!

[Moriarty] Shh. Calm yourself,
Señor Basil. You're in very good hands.

Señor Basil?

You're mistaken, my name is Holmes.

Are you listening to me?
I said that I'm Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes
is a character from fiction, Señor Basil.

Understand?

You are merely an actor.

No, I'm a detective.

[Benjamin] Accounts of my cases have
appeared in Strand Magazine for decades.

-[Moriarty snickers]
-My name is known by everyone.

It's all in your head.
Take it easy, sir. Calm down.

Before long,
your life will return to normal.

-[Moriarty laughs sinisterly]
-[Benjamin whimpers afraid]

[Benjamin grunts]

[dramatic music intensifies]

[crickets chirping]

[quirky mystery music]

[radio crackles, feedback]

[dials in on faint speaking]

One, he was alone.

The k*ller struck Fonseca
with the sole intention

of getting us away to look for him.

[Benjamin] Klemmer was
the intended target.

And he must have had a compelling reason
to come down despite the warnings.

Two, he would have been standing.

Possibly between the table
and the bookcase.

The carpet would have cushioned
the footsteps of the assailant.

[Benjamin] And three,
he was struck from behind.

[body drops]

Klemmer was a strong man. Had he sensed
the danger he would have fought back.

-Anything missing, Foxá?
-Yes. There was a note.

-A sequence of numbers and letters.
-Exactly. There was a note.

This note. Hm?

[Benjamin] S. M. III 293. The k*ller
left it deliberately in plain sight.

So that it would be found next to
the corpse. Pardon, next to Señor Klemmer.

And so? Huh? What does it mean?

Could it be a code?

What is your insight
into the initials S and M?

Nothing that I can think of.

[Fonseca] In summary…

All you can tell us
about the assassination

are obvious things
we could have easily deduced on our own.

[Fonseca] He was alone. Obviously.

[Fonseca] He was attacked from behind.
You only had to look at the body.

But who, Basilio? Who is dispatching,
one by one, all the guests of this hotel?

Perhaps it would help
if we could ascertain

the connections of Señor Klemmer,
Elisa Mander, and the doctor…

Or with you.

-Making an accusation?
-[Foxá] No.

No, simply saying that…

It could have been you, too, amigo Foxá.

Or you, amigo Basil.

Or anyone. Elementary, dear Holmes.

And does anyone know
what they hit him with?

Probably with something heavy.

-[Ausländer] An iron?
-[Vicky] Or a paperweight.

Or a shovel?
Who here maintains the garden?

-Why are you looking at me?
-[Fonseca] I'm just suggesting.

Or can no one make suggestions but Basil?

[Ausländer] Can we all please
just stay calm?

[grandfather clock chimes]

[quirky mystery music]

Where is he off to now?

[grandfather clock still chiming]

Does this clock run slow?

No, it doesn't.

I make sure it is correct every night
when I wind it up before bed.

But have you actually checked it tonight?

[Ausländer] I lifted both weights to
the top. For the clock and the carillon.

But now it is slow by ten minutes.

-What are you doing, Basil?
-[Benjamin] Something elementary.

We're accustomed to believing
objects have only a single purpose.

But it's not always the case.

[Benjamin] The m*rder weapon.

-And is that all?
-It's something, no?

But you still don't know
who m*rder*d my husband.

Basil, you're like the stock market.
It's easy to explain in hindsight.

We must know in advance.

[Fonseca] You're a B-movie actor
playing detective,

and the role is just too big for you.

Who is to say there won't be
more murders tonight?

We won't see another m*rder tonight,
because we will sleep in the dining room.

How are we supposed to do that?

I am the owner of this hotel.
I can't have more murders.

Señores, the radio is finally back on.

I got through to authorities in Palma,
and the police will be here in five hours.

All the more reason
to not separate at all.

Toni and Catalina will prepare
some pillows and mattresses.

Gather what you need,
and we'll meet here in 20 minutes, okay?

Can you come with me, please?

[Fonseca] We can finally
get off this damn island,

and we won't have to put up
with any more nonsense from Señor Holmes.

["Solamente una Vez" by Agustín Lara
playing on the radio]

[Gerard] What can I do for you?

It's a long time
since I failed at something like this.

[Benjamin] And I've had some tough ones.

It cannot be easy working in the movies.

There are worse jobs.

[Gerard] I can assure you there are
far fewer murders here in the summer.

Pour me a drink, will you?

If it's a problem for you,
I can pour it myself.

No, not at all. It's my job.

Whiskey, gin, or vodka?

-[Gerard] A special c*ck?
-Bourbon, solo.

No, don't be timid there, amigo.

You know, Señor Basil?
I'm good at listening to stories.

Do you like greyhound racing?

Indeed. Here we've named it
the poor-man's racetrack.

Believe me, I feel like one of those
greyhounds who run after their prey

they never can quite catch.

A hare that's also fake.

Like the greyhound. [chuckles]

[Gerard] Were you in the w*r, Señor Basil?

Just my own.

I was in two. One after the other.

We lost the first one in Spain.

I thought we'd won
the second one, but… No.

-[Gerard] Have you heard of La Nueve?
-No.

The 9th Company of 2nd Division Leclerc.

[Gerard] Do you think anyone remembers us?

Hm.

We are idiots, Señor Basil.

We chase the hare without realizing
we shouldn't be chasing it

but the one who places the bait.

What are you saying?

[Gerard] It's possible you're doing
exactly what the k*ller wants.

Stop chasing the hare now.
Find who is baiting it.

How should I do that?

Couldn't say.
I just play the piano and mix c*ck.

A tonic water with lots of ice.

[tense string music]

[Ausländer] The dagger disappeared
a few days ago.

Basil suspected it could have been used
to cut Elisa's rope. Did he mention it?

No. First I've heard of it.
Where did you find it?

In this very drawer, a moment ago.

-I suppose we should tell Basil.
-Is that a good idea?

I don't follow.

Do you not find it suspicious
Basil knows the methods of the k*ller?

He has an incredible
capacity for deduction.

Possibly. Or maybe…

he knows something.

[Ausländer] Look at the show he put on
discovering the weight in the clock.

I do not think he is the k*ller.

[Ausländer] But actors are trained
to be something they are not.

You yourself said
that no one is free from suspicion.

[door squeaks and closes]

[sighs] Give it here.
I'll see what I can find out.

[pensive piano music]

I was gathering what belonged to Eliza.

We found this one in Paris.

Eliza was going through a bad moment.

[Adela] She'd been deceived
by a man who promised her a future.

When she realised, the poor thing,
it was too late.

What do you know about him?

Oh, I think he was a writer or something,
but she never talked about him.

She was all alone, and I needed someone
to help me plan my travels.

To book the hotels, to buy the tickets.

So, a secretary.

More of a friend, but that as well.

You mentioned
that she had been married, no?

Yes, but I've already told you everything
I knew about that marriage.

Her husband was a pilot for the RAF

and his plane was shot down
on a mission over Germany.

-Is this yet another interrogation?
-Oh, no. No, no. Sorry.

I've become too accustomed
to asking questions. Excuse me.

[Benjamin] I'll see you downstairs.

[quirky mystery music]

THE MISSING DAGGER

[sighs]

[Vicky] Do you also need
to get away for a little?

[Foxá sighs in relief]

I didn't see you.

Why are you alone?

-[Foxá] Aren't you afraid?
-I'm not alone. I'm with you.

All the more reason.

-[Vicky] What do you mean?
-Maybe I'm the assassin.

You're joking, right?

[both chuckle]

[Vicky] You're just like Fonsi.
Everything is a joke.

Hm, I'm a little bit younger.

[Vicky] And where are you going?

Just to hide the evidence.

[clicks mouth]

Basil is hot on my trail.

How silly. You're not being serious.

Of course I am serious.

[both laugh]

Did you write this one?

Yeah. It's not a big thing.

"For Benjamin Basil." It's for Mr. Holmes.

Something I promised.

Let me read it first.
I haven't read anything of yours.

And that way I'll get to know you better.
It can be our secret.

[scoffs]

[tense string music]

-Excuse me, Catalina.
-Yes?

When you cleaned my room today,
did you see a small book?

Yes, I saw it.
I think it was on the night stand.

On the night stand? Are you sure?

Look, Señor, I… [hesitates nervously]
I swear to you, I took nothing.

[Benjamin] It's okay, I'm not saying
that you took anything.

-What's going on?
-Señor Basil is doing it again.

Look. Calm down, please.
Just tell me when you last saw the book.

In the morning.

Good. Gracias. Muchos gracias.
That's it. That's all.

-Over there.
-[Fonseca] She had to come down too.

If I was the m*rder*r,
she'd be next on my list.

-You're such a brute.
-[Fonseca] All right.

[Ausländer] This will be your place.

Here?

Yes, here.
Or would you rather sleep alone?

[Mrs. Klemmer scoffs]

Okay, everyone, please. Just a second.

We have just got to get
through this night. Nothing more.

If you need the bathroom, then please
be accompanied by people you trust.

I've asked Gerard to keep the generator on
for as long as necessary.

Better with light, sure. Wouldn't want
anyone to be k*lled by accident.

-[Vicky] You idiot.
-Am I?

[Benjamin sighs tiredly]

-[Foxá] Will you accompany me?
-[Benjamin] To the bathroom?

[scoffs] To smoke.

If I can use your tobacco.

You're not afraid of being poisoned…

by my tobacco?

I'll take my chances.

What are you thinking?

"If he's careless and too honest,

a novelist runs the risk that the reader…"

"…solve the mystery before the detective."

-It's from my novel.
-The prologue.

-Have you finished it?
-[Benjamin] I couldn't.

As well as a k*ller,
we also have a book thief in the hotel.

Are you sure?

-[Foxá] Who would steal my book?
-The m*rder*r.

I don't think
they'd have much time for reading.

-That's been my error until now.
-[Foxá] What has?

Just following the clues
that the m*rder*r left for me.

The rope from Elisa, the arm of Seruya…

[Benjamin sighs]

The k*ller is trying to tell me something.

-Just you?
-[Benjamin] Yes.

The m*rder*r has one adversary,
and that's me.

[owl hoots]

[mysterious string music]

Did you think that one of us
wouldn't come back?

The rules are the same
for everyone, you know.

End this foolishness and come back inside.

[Ausländer sighs exasperated]

-[Fonseca snoring]
-[Vicky sighs annoyed]

To tell you the truth,
I should have stayed in Hollywood.

Not with that one, he's a real bore.

Too much yacht,
too much production-blah blah.

But can you guess
what he has for breakfast?

Pork lard spread.

[sighs] I was warned by Clark Gable.

Do you know Clark Gable?

Yes?

Clark Gable.

[whispering] Oh, yes, I know.
Little moustache.

-Do you know him?
-[Vicky] He flirted with me once.

[Vicky] He said to me:

"You Spanish beauty.
What you doing with that old man?"

And I told him: "I love an old man."

"Very difficult, Catalina.
Very difficult."

Clark is just like in the magazines.

SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE MYSTERIOUS SHADOW

[pensive piano music]

[Adela] A shot in the dark?

[Benjamin] You shouldn't be here.

-I hear that a lot.
-[Benjamin] Alone?

-I hear that a lot, too.
-[Benjamin grunts]

[Adela] Should I be worried? Good book?

[Benjamin]
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Aren't the murders here enough for
your attention? Or is it for inspiration?

"S. M."

Strand Magazine.

[Adela] The magazine for short-stories.

And the numbers refer
to the volume and pages, of course.

Elementary.

Two, nine, three.

"He demonstrated that the door
had been locked from the inside

and the windows barred with shutters
held by wide bars of iron.

They were put in place every night."

You have a very nice voice.

-You could have been an actress.
-How many times have you used that?

Many, but most of the time I was lying.

And is it true now?

"All of the walls were carefully examined,
one by one,

and they were confirmed to be
completely solid,

and the floor was examined
in the same way with the same conclusion."

-The k*ller knows your movies.
-Mm.

[Adela] Do you think the fact
that you've played Sherlock Holmes

has incited them to keep k*lling?

That note was left there for me.

But I don't think that would have been
enough to lure Klemmer down here.

So how do you think
they lured Señor Klemmer into this room?

Well, this is something.

[Benjamin] I discovered it
in his hand during my examination.

[Adela] Another scrap of paper?

[Benjamin] It served as a bait
to lure him into the trap.

Why didn't you say anything?

[Benjamin] Because I had
no intention of revealing all my cards.

Especially as the k*ller
has not yet revealed his own.

But it is blank.
There's not even anything written.

The paper is glossy, like from a magazine.

A news story, a photo, an article.

[Benjamin] One of these magazines
held something important for Klemmer.

And you think you can find it?

[Benjamin sighs]

[toilet flushing]

-Will you wait for me now?
-[Vicky] Of course.

I… I might be a little bit.

Alright, please spare me all the details.

Are you enjoying it?

You scared me to death.

It's pretty interesting.

-Aren't you scared?
-No.

[Vicky] Please leave me to my reading. Hm?

[Vicky sighs]

Reading in low light is bad for your eyes.

Allow me to take my chances.

An actress with glasses is not the same.

[Catalina] Señora? Are you there?

Yes, don't worry. I won't abandon you.

[Catalina] Thank you.

It's late. Very late.

For talking.

But there's still time for…

other things.

A drink?

I like to toast my readers.

[Adela] How will you know which one it is?

By its thickness,
by the reflection of the light,

by the texture, it's undoubtedly from…

[Adela] Please stop showing off.

-Paris Match.
-[Adela] Are you joking?

[Adela] The dust, of course.

I have Catalina to thank. She's more
focused on Toni than her cleaning.

-[Adela] Are you going to go page by page?
-[Benjamin] Unless you have a better way.

You're wasting your time and you know it.

I'm looking for a clue
to find the m*rder*r.

[Adela] I think
you already know who it is.

But you're afraid it's true and you're
looking for a page that doesn't exist,

because you'd like the story
to end in a different way.

-I don't understand.
-[Adela] Of course you do.

[Adela] Buenas noches.

[Vicky] So, the k*ller is Moriarty.

Practically, yes.

It's someone cold, intelligent, cultured.

[scoffs] That rules Fonsi out, doesn't it?

[giggles softly]

[Vicky grunts]

Gracias. You're a gentleman, aren't you?

[clunking noise]

My heel. Oh. Mustn't leave this here.

[softly] Vicky.

I just wanted a glass of water.

I'll get you one.

Señor Finnegan is an absolute gentleman,
and I am a lady.

-A young lady.
-I never once doubted it.

[Vicky scoffs] Are you still a gentleman?

[Foxá scoffs]

Absolutely.

A gentleman, Basil, like your Holmes.

Or like Moriarty.

[pensive piano music]

[continues clicking lighter]

[people snoring]

[Ausländer] Do you know where Basil is?

-Basil?
-I can't find him.

-Is everyone else here?
-[Ausländer] Yes.

Have you found out anything
about the dagger?

[Foxá] Nothing.

Then please give it back to me.
I think it's best I keep it.

[Foxá hesitates]
I'm sorry, I left it in my room upstairs.

Nothing to worry about.
Nobody knows I have it.

[tense string music]

I can't say that it was
a particularly surprising read.

Besides, the k*ller also uses
a clock weight as a weapon.

Quite a coincidence, no?

Might be.

That must be the police boat.

It will take them about half an hour.

[Foxá] One final stroll?

[Benjamin] Not enough time
to find our k*ller.

[Foxá] In the end it looks like
he or she got away.

[Benjamin] Let's make a last attempt.

The m*rder of Elisa Mander.

k*lled by someone who wanted
to make the crime look like a suicide.

-[Foxá] Correct.
-[Benjamin] The vanished, severed rope.

[Benjamin] The blow to her temple.
The displaced table.

[Benjamin] We understand the method,
but we just don't know the motive.

[Benjamin] And the matter
might just have ended there,

if the doctor hadn't gotten in the way.

He probably just tried
to coerce the k*ller.

Possibly. The fact is,
the k*ller decided to get rid of him.

[Benjamin] And then started leaving
all manner of clues.

The letter opener.

The macabre joke with the toupee.
His finger pointing to the bookcase.

A k*ller who moves from concealing a crime
behind a supposed suicide

to a staging worthy of Hollywood.

What made them change?

You. Me.

-Us together.
-Exactly.

We started our performance
of old Holmes and Watson.

And they were Moriarty.

Or not.

[Benjamin] I can't stop thinking
about Seruya's locked room, you see,

and can only think
of one possible explanation.

[Benjamin] When we arrived at his door,
you said you heard noises from inside.

There's a noise.

[Foxá] Yes, from the record player.

[Benjamin] That afforded you the pretext
to smash the door with the extinguisher.

Once a hole was made,

you put your hand through
and claimed to have found the key.

It looks like the key is in the lock.

But perhaps…

that wasn't the truth.

[Benjamin] What if you
placed it there yourself?

Concealed it in your fist,
because you already possessed the key.

You put it in position
and then pretended it was out of reach,

so that I would be the one to discover it.

Do you really think that I'm the k*ller?

It would be good, no?

Where Dr. Watson turns out to be criminal.

Let's suppose you have ascertained
the manner and the culprit.

You're missing the most important. Motive.

Adela made a comment that Elisa
had been in a relationship in Paris.

I think he was a writer or something,
but she never talked about him.

That's just a supposition,
it's not proof at all.

That time we went out
to search for Fonseca,

when we returned,
you were already at the hotel.

Basil.

I was coming to find you.

Perhaps I got tired of looking for him.

And my copy of The Missing Dagger,
Mr. Finnegan?

[Foxá] The k*ller could have read it.

Basil, the m*rder of Klemmer being
like my novel is evidence in my favour.

[Foxá] I'd have to be crazy
to do such a thing.

Alright, then, but why did you steal
the book from my room?

Because I got scared.
I didn't want to raise suspicions.

But wasn't it just evidence
in your favour?

-You're not the only one with a theory.
-Let's have it.

What if Moriarty isn't Watson…

but Holmes?

I had no connection
with any of those people whatsoever.

And yet, somehow you always
knew the method.

The details about
how each victim had been m*rder*d.

The rope, the letter opener,
the weight from the clock…

[Foxá] The dagger.

[scoffs] Elementary.

"I have to confess to you, Watson,

that I have always had an idea
I would have made a criminal

of extreme efficiency."

It really is true
that you've seen all my movies.

You were the best
Sherlock Holmes in history.

"You were"?

Don't get any closer.

[Benjamin] What now?

[tense, sustained string music]

The game is now up
to the police to finish.

[Benjamin] Do you really think
I was the best Holmes in history?

[tense string music]

Ah-ah, not my lingerie.

Are you telling me
that he didn't have German citizenship

despite being born
and living there for his entire life?

[Ausländer] There was nothing we could do.

The door was locked from the inside
and we had to break it.

[investigator] I see.

[Fonseca] Don't touch the jewellery.

An empty case.

Are you done yet?

And after all you have told me
you do not have a single proof. Nothing.

I have evidence
that lead to that conclusion.

[investigator] Aha.
That Señor Foxá is a m*rder*r.

Everything points to that.

[investigator scoffs] Señor Foxá said
the same thing about you.

Who should I believe?

-The evidence says what it says.
-No, it's what you say.

And he has stated
that you had in your possession

the weapon from the second m*rder.

Well, it was slipped
under my door by the m*rder*r.

[scoffs] What a coincidence.

-[Benjamin] It was a game.
-Playful, too. How fun. Mmm?

[investigator] But you also knew
that the clock weight

was the weapon for the third m*rder.

[Benjamin] Simple deduction.

Mmm… Or maybe you knew it.
You used it for the m*rder.

It would be ridiculous
to implicate myself like that.

The same could be said with the fact
that the k*lling of the German

was just like in the novel by Señor Foxá.

[Benjamin] Señor Foxá lied.
He was the one who took the dagger.

Señor, I don't want
to argue with either of you, okay?

Just know that as of now I have as many
reasons to arrest this gentleman as you.

And given your past and Mr. Foxá's,
right now, I would arrest you first.

-[scoffs] I…
-Don't worry, we're interrogating him.

And if we find…

What do you call it? Evidence.
He'll be arrested, I assure you.

[investigator] And if we don't find any,
don't worry, "Señor Holmes."

Just because we can't hold anyone here,
doesn't mean the investigation is over.

[Benjamin] Three victims and no arrest.
Were this a movie, I would have solved it.

Don't feel too bad, at least one
of them wasn't really a victim.

How do you mean?

Well, about a month ago, the Jewish
Historical Documentation Centre called

to ask if Señor Klemmer was staying here.

And what did you say?

I said the couple had made a reservation
for these dates.

They said they'd call back,
but they haven't made contact again.

Are you sure the call
was made from the centre?

If I am sure of anything,

it's that someone from the SS
is anything but a victim.

Give me a good price,
and I'll hire you as hotel detective.

I'd prefer to stay an actor.

If I'm honest,
I prefer you as a detective.

Wow, I've yet to experience a critic

give me such a brief
and devastating review.

[Vicky] Fonsi, let's go!

Come on, Señor Basil,
our yacht is waiting.

Adios, Señora Ausländer.

[Vicky awkwardly] Au revoir!

-She has a great future.
-Mmm.

[Vicky] Going to the sea!

[Fonseca] Don't be long. We have to leave
this island as soon as possible.

Don't mean to offend you.

-[Ausländer] It was an honour to meet you.
-You are quite simply extraordinary.

I know. Bon voyage.

[pensive piano music]

[Adela] Aw, it does look like Sherlock
Holmes couldn't catch the k*ller this time.

[Benjamin] Holmes is not infallible.

[Benjamin] But he is persistent.
The game remains afoot.

If this were one of your movies,
it'd be a fitting finale.

You're wrong.

This is just the end of the second act.

Really? Is that a fact?

There's been no cl*max to this movie.

In that, you are correct.
Keep me informed, if there's any news.

I will.

[mysterious piano music]

[Adela] Elisa!

[outro theme playing]
