and then, yeah, just some heels.

I'm not really bothered
what I wear to be honest.

I would've worn a tracksuit.

[Coleen] This is a big month
for both me and Wayne.

-[people chattering]

[Coleen] We're going to be
playing a big part

in Robbie Williams'
charity football game for UNICEF.

Soccer Aid, um,
passing the baton over to you.

Thank you very much
for being involved with it.

As an ambassador,
I'm really, really grateful.

It's always great to be involved
with Soccer Aid.

Singers, celebrities, Youtubers,
and some ex-footballers.

They've raised over 120 million.
It's incredible.

And this year I'm co-managing
with Tyson Fury, so it should be fun.

Coleen's just went out to Poland for it.

For them, so I'm part of the family now.

[Coleen] I've been asked
to make a fundraising film

about Ukrainian refugee children,
which will be shown at half-time.

Hi.

It's an eye-opener 'cause you
think you know what's going on,

but actually, until you visit
and you hear it firsthand.

Helping kids in need
is something close to my heart.

When Coleen was three,
she ended up in a coma.

I'm gonna get upset,
but, um, 24 hours, touch and go.

But I'm so grateful because she was alive,
we wanted to give something back.

[Coleen] When I was young, my parents
cared for children with disabilities,

and did respite and fostering care
for families in need.

Hello, Mum.

It's something that I have always
been passionate about.

You know, we can't put the world right,
but you can...

Make a difference.

-[producer] New members of the family.
-[Coleen] Yeah.

Smelly new members.

And to be honest,
I don't even know which one's which.

I think the little one's Muddy
and that one's George.

You know, they seem happy.

I don't know why we got them.

Oh, Kit wanted them.

[producer] What do you like
about having pigs?

Uh, I don't know. [chuckles]

Kit wanted a pet for a while,

and he's had discussions with me mum.

[Colette]
I said to Coleen, "Could I buy Kit pigs?"

So she said, "Oh, here you go again, Mum."

So I said "They're only little,
they won't... they won't grow."

She agreed.

So that's when Muddy and George
came along.

Joined the Rooney family. [chuckles]

[producer] Does Mum like pigs?

Yeah.

-Here he is.
-[pig snorts]

[Coleen] Kit's not been enjoying school
lately, and today he wouldn't even go in.

Do you want to give them a carrot?

-Hey.
-What?

Your feet are freezing.

Get some shoes on
'cause you're gonna get sick.

I'm quite straight and stern,

and I would get me children to go in
to school, but Kit's just...

He's just different and sometimes
I've got to manage him in a different way.

So he's ended up coming home.

Kit, what do you want to eat?

-[Kit] Can I have bacon butty?
-[Coleen] Bacon butty.

[pan sizzling]

I think Kit's very similar
to what I was when I was young.

What?

But Kit's got a sensitive side as well,
hasn't he?

-Where... I know. That's what I mean.
-Me as well, I have also...

You're one or the other,
like, there's no in between.

So I'm hoping Kit will benefit
from some attention.

At school, Kit's been learning
about the Second World w*r,

and he's been coming home
telling us all the facts.

And he's really interested in it.

[Wayne] That's a good strike.

And he's mentioned a few times
about going to Poland.

We've got a little bit of spare time

before the Soccer Aid filming
and the big match.

Where are you going now?

So we are going to take a trip there,
and Cass is gonna come along too.

[exclaims] Excuse me.

-[guide] This is the old town.
-[Coleen] Oh, this is nice.

It's mad, innit, because I've been
to so many different countries

but I've never really seen them.

You're literally off the plane,
to the hotel, to a stadium.

You will be boys
in underground world today.

[Coleen] First stop on the itinerary
is the world famous salt mines.

-[Cass] This lift is creepy.
-[Coleen chuckles]

-[Wayne] It's like the Tower of Terror.
-[Kit] I know!

[Coleen] Do you know what?
I really enjoyed the salt mines.

I didn't expect it to be like it was.

[Cass] Feels weird.

[guide] Everything that surrounds us,
it's all salt rock.

[Cass] Ugh.

[Kit] So this is salt?

I want to lick it.

[guide speaks indistinctly]

[Coleen] How did it taste?

-[chuckles]
-It's good.

[groans]

[Coleen] I didn't expect...

-[Cass] Echo!
-that much to be under there.

[Cass laughing, snorts]

Who are ya?

Is that made out of salt?

That's a great question.

Yes, it is. This is halite salt.

This is the purest sort of salt
that can be found here in the mine.

[whispering] Mum.

[Coleen] Made out of salt,
and what's it say?

"Do not touch."

Kit. No, a nice one, please.

-[camera shutter clicking]
-Yep.

-[Cass] Mum.
-[Kit muttering]

[Cass] Mum, look.

That whole big chapel with the carvings
on the wall, that really surprised me.

-[Wayne] It's incredible, isn't it?
-[guide] Yeah.

Sculptures and, like,
the work they had to put in.

How hard it must have been to do it.

Amazing.

It was a long one for the kids.

And then they started
getting on each other's nerves.

-What are you doing?
-[Coleen] Uh... Kids, kids, stop it.

Uh, excuse me.

You stay with him. You stay with me.

But I thought it was
a really nice thing to do.

I would recommend it if you go to Poland.

Wayne got presented with a trophy.

A football made out of salt,
which was a nice touch.

Yeah, it's in the trophy room. Yeah.

Worst thing I could have done,
brought her into a shop.

She can't leave
without going to the gift shop.

Wayne hates shopping.

They love a shop. My kids love a shop.

I literally get petrol.

[Coleen] The great thing
about being in Poland

was no one seemed to recognise Wayne.

We could just walk
around like a normal family.

[Coleen] Cass is asleep.

Wake up. [kisses]

Let's see your teeth.

See if you've got anything in them?

What did you say, your mouth's black?

-[Wayne imitates Coleen]
-[chuckling]

[both laughing]

[Coleen]
What flavour ice cream you getting?

I'm gonna get salted.

Salted caramel?

-Ew.
-[Kit mutters]

[Coleen] Do you want it
in a cup or a cone?

Do you want sprinkles?

Yeah, you do.

-[Wayne] Thank you.
-[Coleen] Thank you, bye!

Oh, here you are, here's the horse.

You wanna go to the square?
Go on the horse and carriage?

-[Cass] No.
-[Coleen] Why?

[Cass] 'Cause the horse won't know
when to stop.

[Coleen] It does 'cause someone sits
on the carriage and directs it.

[Cass giggles]

[Wayne] Is it like a street dance?

-Might go and join in.
-[giggles, snorts]

When we used to go out,
when we were younger,

towards the end of the night,
I used to be able to do backflips then.

It wasn't backflips.

-It was. It was.
-It wasn't. That's an exaggeration.

[Coleen] You look like the king of Poland,
sitting there. Start waving to people.

[Wayne] Kit is having a good time.

Which is good because this holiday, it's
all about giving him attention and love.

Is this the capital city?

No.

-Where is the capital?
-Is that Manchester?

Is Warsaw the capital of Poland?

-Warsaw.
-[Wayne] Is it?

Done well getting that on camera.

It's probably the only capital you know.

I don't even know
whether it definitely is,

-but is it, the capital of Poland?

[Coleen] The horse and carriage ride was
a great way of seeing more of the square,

and a bit more of Krakow.
The kids enjoyed it.

Wayne seemed to enjoy it.

Until we stopped.

Busy, isn't it?

People started recognising
that Wayne was on it.

Let's move quick.

[Coleen] They knew
where the carriage would stop.

-Thank you.

[Coleen] So, there was
a bit of a crowd waiting.

Wayne, do you mind if I get
a quick selfie with you, mate?

[Coleen] Oh. Sorry.

We walked across the square.

It just wasn't a nice situation to be in.

The kids were getting swarmed.

Kit, come on.

And all of a sudden
a man tried to grab Wayne.

All right mate, get off
my shoulder then, all right

-Hands off.
-[Coleen] It was to take a selfie.

-Cheers.
-Wayne, we wanted to grab a quick picture.

[Coleen] But it was the wrong way
to go about it.

I did ask the cameras to go away
because it just got a bit too much.

It's just drawing too much attention now.

So, I think we're gonna go
in a minute and just,

yeah, we've never, usually we just
try and go in places with no attention.

-But obviously...
-Col, where you going?

-It's straight down that way, yeah.

Kids, come on then.

-Take your hands out.
-No.

[Coleen] That's an example of...

why over the years we've took the decision

to not include Wayne in a lot of things,
and it's sad.

You know, there's been places where we've
been going and we've said to Wayne,

"Do you know what,
I don't think it's worth you coming

because it's just
gonna cause too much havoc."

[Coleen] I think take the mics off.

-[Wayne] Huh?
-[Coleen] Take the mics off down here.

[Wayne] Why've you done that?

[Coleen] In this busy place,
it's too-too much, isn't it?

[Wayne] I'm not a celebrity.

People who know me know that
I want to be as normal as possible.

Go back to when I was a kid
and you want to be a football player.

That's all I ever wanted to do,

and I didn't care
about fame or money or whatever.

I just wanted to be a football player.

Come stand on it.

I think I'd be such a better husband,
dad, person, friend...

without it.

Let's see what Cass is.

Because I do think it affects places I go,
things I do.

-Thirty.
-[Kit] Take your shoes off.

I can't go anywhere without
someone getting a picture with him.

Um... yeah.

Annoying.

[Wayne] I bought a mask the other
week, I've seen it on TikTok.

-Your room's next door.

It looked incredible. You put it on,
put a cap on and it looks real.

I bought it
and it looked so terrible. [chuckles]

So, no, I think just

being Dad, a husband,

son...

just being normal
would be nice for one day.

[Coleen] All right,
what do youse want to do?

Do you want to go to
the restaurant or do you just want to...

order something?

-[Wayne speaks indistinctly]
-[grunts]

[Coleen] Come here, Cass. Come on.

And take those to the lift.

[Cass trills]

[Wayne] The next day we went on a trip

which put my worries about
being famous into perspective.

[Coleen] We're flying home today,
so we're gonna take a detour

on the way to find out
the history of Auschwitz.

I think it's fantastic to give Kit
an opportunity to explore,

and learn a bit more
about what he's interested in.

There's also another reason to go there.

Recently found out that my mum's mum,
so, me nan, her family was Polish Jews.

[producer] Technically, if that's true,
you're actually Jewish.

I'm Catholic. But then I've always
asked questions like,

why aren't we Jewish?

[producer] Would you be interested
in finding out more?

There could be a spin-off show.

-Roo the Jew?
-[Wayne, Coleen laugh]

See that train track we just crossed?

-[guide] Uh, yes.
-Does that go into Auschwitz?

Yes. This is the railroad,
the main railroad.

The location and good railroad connections
as well as number of Jewish in Poland,

Auschwitz became one of these main camps.

In fact, finally the biggest with
the biggest number of the victims.

[Wayne] I've watched
a lot of documentaries on it,

and you just...

wouldn't think

human beings could do that
to other human beings.

It's, um...

it's crazy. Yeah.

Wayne's always been interested in history,

and he's taught himself over the years
a lot of interesting information.

He has got a real bug for learning about,

you know, different places in the world,
cultures, people, values.

If they found the camps earlier
than they said, well, they...

Didn't they send the images over
to Churchill

and, um, over to the US as well?

And they didn't believe.

[Kit] Uh, why does Dad know everything?

Kit, we're nearly there now.

Why does it look so big?

It's big, isn't it?

What's them wooden things?

-These are the guards towers.
-The guards would be in there with g*ns.

Guards were sitting there with the g*ns,

and they were protecting the camps
so no prisoner could escape.

[Coleen] People question, you know, like,
"Why would you visit?" You know, it's...

it mightn't be for everyone,
but it's part of history.

[Wayne] Having the knowledge, you know,
of what happened before our time,

and what people

done for us to be able
to enjoy the privileges we have now.

I think we tend to forget that sometimes.

[Coleen] We will, you know, take the kids
to places that they're interested in.

And I think it's catching them at the time

when they are interested
because that time passes

and they don't want to
do stuff or they don't,

you know, they're not interested
in the subject anymore.

[Kit] Come here, Mum. What's this?

It was nice to take Kit to Poland.

I think he got a lot out of it
and really enjoyed it.

[guide] Poland will miss you.

[Coleen] Thanks very much.
It's been great.

And it was just nice to
have some family time together.

in training for Soccer Aid.

Good fun, everyone meeting each other,
and all the celebrities

are sh1tting themselves. They wanna win.

I'm gonna be playing as well,
so I'm looking forward to it.

It does get competitive,
so you get frustrated as well.

At the end of the game, you know,
there's a trophy there to be lifted.

-[player 1] Was that Rooney?
-[player 2] I think so.

[Coleen] While Wayne was getting geared up
for the game...

funnily enough, I was back in Poland

making the UNICEF film
about Ukrainian refugee children.

So, out of all the refugees
that have come to Poland,

what percentage is children?

Thirty-five per cent of all refugees
staying in Poland are children.

[Coleen] For my first stop,
UNICEF lined up a visit

at a school which they help fund.

Hi. Good morning. Nice to meet you.

-Nice to meet you. [speaks Polish]
-Yeah.

[employee] She said,
"I love your husband."

[both laugh]

-Let's go in.
-What about me?

[employee] Exactly. [speaks Polish]

[Coleen] I'll sit on the floor.
It's fine, yeah. Thank you.

As a mum, instinctively, you always want
to do whatever you can to help children.

And I feel really honoured to have
been chosen by UNICEF to make this film.

-Hi.
-[teacher speaking Ukrainian]

-[student] Hi.
-Hi. Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you.
What-What's "hello" in Ukrainian?

Hello, it means... [speaks Ukrainian]

[teacher speaking Ukrainian]

[Coleen] Luckily, I have had
a lot of experience

of being around kids with different needs.

[Colette]
When Coleen was three, she got, um...

she-she took really sick.

It turned out it was encephalitis,
and her brain was swelling.

She couldn't walk. She couldn't speak.
She was stumbling her words.

When we got to Alder Hey Hospital,
she ended up in a coma.

I'm getting upset, but, um, 24 hours,
touch and go.

She had to learn to walk again.
All the coordination had gone.

But I'm so grateful
that because she was alive,

we wanted to give something back.

[Coleen] When I was growing up,

my mum and dad helped children
from underprivileged backgrounds,

children who had disabilities.

They would take kids in at our house for,

like, a weekend
to give their parents a break.

Then my mom and dad began
foster caring newborn babies.

[Tony] Oh, isn't she lovely?

[Coleen] We gave them a start in life
and then they got adopted.

We got a little girl when she was two.

We fell in love with her straight away.

And we went on to adopt my sister, Rosie,

who had a rare genetic disorder
which needed a lot of care and attention.

I think for UNICEF to place me
in that environment

and that was, you know, my film to make.

I'm glad they did choose me because it's
something that I feel passionate about.

[teacher speaks Ukrainian]

[Coleen] UNICEF have done an amazing job.

Hopefully, you know,
people will see the film

and donate because it's
all dependent on funding.

[speaks Ukrainian]

[Coleen] But on a personal level,

I want to make my mum and dad proud

and show them I've not forgotten
the values they taught me growing up.

It does make me wanna check in
with my own family back home.

This was Kit.

Kit got a trumpet for his birthday.

So, he hasn't had a lesson in the trumpet,

but he decided tonight
that he wanted to learn the trumpet

with a teacher
that can't teach a trumpet, so...

Today is Soccer Aid.

It's always a great day out
for us as a family,

but this year is a bit different

because we have got
three of us involved in it.

So, Wayne's playing.

Then at half-time,
they will be showing my film about

the Ukrainian refugee kids
for the first time.

And we've got Cass who is a mascot.

He's been asking to get dressed
since he got up this morning.

Cass can't wait to walk out on the pitch.

Would you like Cassie to do your hair?

-No.
-What about a bit of make-up?

-No.
-What? You don't want...

You don't want eyeliner on?
Do you want to wear mascara?

-[giggles]

No.

You need to practice what the mascots do.
What faces do they pull.

Cass is seven. He's still young.

He still gets that excitement,
which I love,

because all me others are all growing up
and that excitement of events is going.

[Cass] If Dad's not starting, Angry Ginge.

since I was in this space,

[Coleen] But it's a bit crazy seeing him
signing autographs in the fan zone.

Just about to start Soccer Aid,

the teams are in the tunnel.

[Coleen]
I was stood by the side of the pitch,

so I couldn't see who Cass was paired up
with when the teams walked out.

I saw he wasn't with Angry Ginge,

but I still couldn't actually see
who was Wayne's mascot.

-There's Wayne coming along now.
-Where?

Over there.

[Coleen] Oh, yeah, he's with Wayne.

He got his dad.

I was like, "Surely you don't want
to pick your dad to walk out with."

-Right, his dad is doing the...
-Aw, look at him.

[Coleen] Cass got to be mascot with
Wayne on the day, so he was happy.

Did they say, "Do you want to
go with someone else, or..."

No, Dad just came to me.

Oh, did he? [chuckles]

The atmosphere absolutely electric,

and it promises to be an absolute cr*cker.

Rooney, sent Wilshere away.

[Coleen] It was great for the kids
to see Wayne

back on the pitch at Old Trafford again.

And then of course,
you'll never guess what happened next.

[commentator] It's the fourth time inside
the penalty area for Rooney!

[commentator 2] Ah!
It was always gonna happen!

My nan could have scored that.

[chuckles]

I was more concerned about
getting these on camera.

Cass, Cass, who scored?

-Dad.
-Did he?

It was nice to score at the Stretford End,
Old Trafford. First goal.

-Rooney, Rooney, Rooney.
-[chuckles]

Incredible, what a way
to kick off the game.

[commentator] What a clearance.

First half, it was close,
but we done our job. We-We got a lead.

Whilst the players
head off for a well-deserved rest,

let's remind ourselves
why they are doing this.

[Coleen, on video] UNICEF works in over


helping children in all
sorts of different ways.

I was a bit anxious but also excited
when the moment came to show my film.

This was the first time my mum
and dad have seen it.

The school caters for children
with lots of different needs.

It's a familiar sort of place to me

as I grew up with a sister
who had disabilities.

To see the woman she's become now,

from that little girl who we thought
we were gonna lose.

You know, I'm so proud of her.

If you can help as many people,
and many causes as possible,

it's brilliant.

You know, we can't put the world right,
but you can...

Make a difference.

[Coleen] As a mum,
my children are my priority,

and I'd do anything for them.

Please give what you can.
