Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story (2026)

Post by bunniefuu »

[Genelle] And then he's-he's running around

-and he's running around!

-[laughing]

[Genelle] So it's only

two of them in the pot.

-Okay.

-And Ezra is gone!

It's got a name now?

How do you tell the difference

between a he and a she crab?

-Right?

-A boy crab

has the Washington Monument - Girl!

Kinda carved into his belly shell.

The Washington monument?

The Washington Monument!

[women laughing]

It looks like a... it looks

like a you know what.

[laughing]

'Cause you investigated!

So anyway, I know Ezra is here somewhere.

And there he is, scared to death.

Then he starts dancing.

Ayyyyye!

Ezra's got moves!

[laughing]

So I pick Ezra up, - Okay.

And carry him back to

the pot for tonight's dinner.

I couldn't put him in there

'cause I started to get

to know the little guy.

'Cause you connected.

So I took-I took Ezra and

his brothers to the ocean.

-Drop them in the bay.

-Oh boy.

And that is why there

is callaloo with no crab!

[laughing hysterically]

You know what Ezra said when

he finally got back to the ocean?

-What?

-What?

"Long time, no sea".

-Oh.

-[groaning]

Yeah. Let's wrap this up.

It is a work night.

-Yes.

-Aww.

-You k*lled us!

-No, don't go.

Great meal. Thanks, darling.

-Love you.

-Love you so much.

Dance like Ezra.

[laughing]

He's got style.

Bye Toostie, love you===.

-Hey, good to see you ladies.

-Bye bye!

[Lauren] Love you!

Oh.

Mmm.

That was fun.

You were funny.

[laughing]

Look, I gotta be up at 5:00 a.m.

And hey, you got work too, lady.

Oh, one more song.

No way! It's late, Genelle.

Well, how about one chorus

of Can't Stop Loving You?

I sing it better than Ray.

[giggles]

Mmm!

Roger!

Will I ever be enough for you?

What kind of question is that?

[exhales]

What do you mean?

"Will I ever be enough for you?"

You never want to just chill with me.

Every weekend you're

out clubbing with the girls

or throwing a party, even Mondays now!

You sound like an old man!

And you sound like a little girl.

[sighs]

[Roger] Here-here's a crazy idea.

Let's try staying home next weekend.

All weekend.

Look.

I used to burn it up too.

Dusk 'til dawn. You know that.

But when we decided to move in together,

I- I figured it'd be more about us

spending time. The-the two of us.

[alarm ringing]

[turns alarm off]

[groans lightly]

[phone ringing]

Hello?

-Hi, mom.

-Oh!

-How's it going, Kimberly?

-I'm good.

I made a book for school about

my trip to New York last year.

-Oh!

-Sure wish you could see it.

I can.

I just need you to tell me about it.

-Describe it for me, honey.

-Okay, well,

on the front it's got a really

big picture of where you work,

and it's a sunset,

so the tower is all pink and amber.

In the mountains, they

call that "alpenglow".

"Alpenglow".

Did somebody go to

Switzerland and didn't tell me?

[laughs] What?

No, silly, I didn't. I'm reading a book.

So, mom, when can I come visit?

Well, Christmas is coming.

That's, like, three months away.

It's already been a

year since my last visit.

I know, Kimmie.

But I don't just want you to visit.

This time I want you to stay.

For good?

That's right, baby.

All right, sweetie, we gotta go.

-Gotta go, mom.

-I'm giving you a squeeze.

Me, too.

So I'll see you at Christmas, okay?

I'll tell your dad about our plans.

Mhm. All right. Bye, mom.

Kimmie, we're gonna be together. We are.

-Bye.

-Bye, darling.

- I love-

- [hangs up]

[dial tone]

I love you.

Dad?

Yeah, honey?

Do you like New York?

-I like Trinidad.

-So you'd never live there?

Uh...

Look, honey, your mom and I, we

we don't see eye to eye on much.

That's why she's with Roger now.

But

if you want to be with her,

we could certainly talk about it.

Did she talk about...

She talks about a lot of things.

-But they never happen.

-Oh...

Look.

Your mom loves you very much. Okay?

Just like I do.

I know.

[instrumental hip-hop beat]

Good morning.

How do you run in those heels?

Oh, I've been practicing since I was three.

It's a sport in Trinidad.

Wel, I'd break an ankle.

You wanna race?

No way.

Two black coffees.

-You have a good day now.

-You too.

Cheers Tony. Yeah. Thanks.

[music beat continues]

Hello, sunshine.

Good morning.

How was the crab callaloo?

Oh, long story.

[laughing]

Yo, Frankie. What is

this? Destruction Derby?

Hell yeah. And I'm Mad Max.

Another day, another dollar.

Oh, honey, don't you worry.

In two weeks

we're gonna be in Miami.

-Mhm, mhm..

-Mhm. Me and you.

Just me and you- and the

clubs they got down there?

South beach is caliente, mama.

Listen, we gonna dance till we drop.

Frank, you want to go

clubbing with us in Miami?

[Frank] I don't know.

This supermodel keeps

bugging me about Monte Carlo,

Lake Como, Paris...

I hate when that happens.

-Me and George Clooney.

-Ah!

Same problem.

-[laughing]

-[elevator dings]

I know.

[indiscernible office chatter]

-We go.

-Right?

-Your little booty.

-Uh-huh.

I'm gonna take my big girl booty.

-And your booty.

-And we're gonna do the things

that booties are supposed to do in Miami.

Do you know what I mean?

What booties are supposed to do?

You know what I mean.

-I do.

-You know.

Every day, you got to stop and look.

I'm just so lucky to be here, Nora.

-I'll see you later.

-Okay.

-Yeah!

-[laughs]

Ah.

-[tapping]

-Excuse me, Miss Guzman.

I was told you run a matchmaking service

for civil engineers.

Absolutely.

Do you prefer a man who is geotechnical

or environmental?

Ooh. It really doesn't matter,

as long as his hydraulics work.

[laughing]

So where's your boss?

Uh, Bahamas.

Mhm.

How was your convention?

[sighs] Well, it's the Society

of Women Engineers, Genelle.

It's still Atlantic City.

You didn't meet anyone?

No, I uh, I had to go home. My mom fell.

Oh, no. Is she okay?

She didn't break any bones, but, um,

her eyesight's getting worse every day, and

the doctor says in about a year or so...

Oh, Sarah, I'm so sorry.

Yeah. Thanks, pal.

I mean, she still has some time,

but I've-I've got to be prepared.

[Maxwell] 35, 36 homers.

36. Only problem is, he

can't run and he can't throw.

Ugh. Baseball. Who cares?

Piazza stays, right Genelle?

Oh. Who would trade a future Hall of Famer?

Told ya.

[chuckles]

[keyboard clacking]

[sirens wailing in the distance]

[jet engines intensify, then fade out]

Ah!

Here it is.

"Braille Institute".

Wait. I gotta get a pen.

[sudden loud rumbling]

Oh, my gosh! What was that?

[loud rumbling]

[gasp]

[heavy vibrations]

[thud]

[vibrations subside]

Oh my god.

Genelle, what was that?

Have you never felt an earthquake?

Not in New York.

I've been through

plenty of them in Trinidad.

This is exactly how it feels.

Frank, where are you going?

Anywhere but here.

-[uneasy music]

-[man] Is that smoke?

[tense music]

Maybe it wasn't an earthquake.

Maybe it was an expl*si*n.

Yeah.

And it blew some of the windows out.

And that's where all

this paper is coming from.

Okay, okay. Everybody,

there's no need to panic.

Those who want to leave, can.

Everyone else just stay calm.

Okay?

What do you think we should do?

I don't know. I think it's

going to be a mob down there.

I- I think we should wait.

I- I don't know until we

get more information.

Yeah.

[Reporter] We just got a report in

that there's been some sort of expl*si*n

at the World Trade Center.

We can't confirm any of

this, that a plane may have hit

one of the two towers of

the World Trade Center.

Okay.

[Reporter]... we're going

to find out, and of course,

make sure that everybody knows on the air.

[phone ringing]

-Hello?

-Hello, Roger. It's me.

Genelle, are you okay?

Yeah. Can you see anything?

I sure can.

I see a big hole and a lot of smoke

twenty, maybe thirty floors above you.

They're saying a small plane

crashed into the north tower.

What do you think I should do?

I think you should get out

of there right now, babe.

It's going to be chaotic either way.

Okay, I guess you're right.

Let's meet at that department

store across the plaza.

Okay. In 15 minutes?

Yeah.

Why didn't you let me buy you a cell phone?

Roger, do we have to argue about this now?

[sighs] I'm just worried

about you, babe, that's all.

I- I-I love you, babe.

I love you too, baby.

Bye.

[Sarah] Genelle, was that Roger?

When I get back, we're gonna go.

Why? What-what did he say?

A small plane crashed into the building.

Be ready, okay?

Okay?

Okay. Okay.

Hey. We gotta get out of here.

We're gonna get out of here. Let's go.

[Pete] Genelle!

How many people are still here?

Uh...

About 20.

We got about 20 people, Sergeant.

Yeah, 64th floor. What

do you want us to do?

[Sergeant] Stay put.

The elevators are down.

Rescuers are on the way up to get you.

They have oxygen tanks.

Stay up there. It's safer.

Okay, uh... listen up, everybody!

That was the police I was speaking to.

They're telling us to

stay where we are, guys.

The elevators are down,

but they're coming to get us.

So everything's gonna be okay.

What... uh.

[We're going to be ok]

[sirens rushing past]

[tense music]

[sirens blaring]

Hey, Kate.

Almost strong enough to be a fireman now.

Thanks, pop. You're almost

smart enough to be a cop.

[tense music]

You made a good brisket on Sunday.

Who said the Irish can't cook, huh?

Yeah.

Keep your distance if you can. Okay, kid?

I got this, Dad.

Good.

'Cause next Sunday is my turn.

[Nora] Oh my God! The smoke is coming in!

[crying] The smoke is coming in!

If the cops are coming,

then that means that the

building is-is safe, okay?

You gotta breathe.

Take a breath.

-Okay.

-Okay.

[exhales]

Nora, tell us-tell us about Vivian.

How did you dress her this morning?

She was...

She was really adorable.

I put her hair up in a little ponytail and,

and I painted her nails.

-Yes?

-[crying]

Mhm.

[Reporter] There's no way to say

if this could have been related to that.

Right. Don Dahler,

ABC's Don Dahler, who is on the scene.

Don, just give me some description again

of what you're uh, what you can see now.

[Don] It appears that the-there

is more and more fire and smoke

enveloping the very top of the building.

And as fire crews

are descending on this area,

it does not appear that there's

any kind of an effort up there yet.

-Now remember-oh my god!

-[loud expl*si*n]

[frightened screams]

[loud rumbling]

[whimpers]

[rumbling tapers off]

[Gibson] So this looks

like it is some sort of

a concerted effort to attack

the World Trade Center that is underway

in downtown New York.

Oh, this is terrifying, awful.

[Diane] To watch powerless is a horror.

[Anchor] Both trade towers,

these 110 story high

towers have now been hit.

The FBI has already investigated reports

that a plane was actually hijacked.

In Washington, at the

moment, the presumption is

that this is a t*rror1st attack.

According to ABC's John McWethy,

though, it's very difficult

at the moment for anybody to get a clear

appreciation of what has actually happened

because it has happened so quickly.

The first attack coming

just before 9:00 eastern time,

and the second attack,

which we could all watch,

those of us who are watching television,

occurring at 9:03, just three minutes

[tense music]

[voicemail] Hey, this is

Roger. Leave a message.

Roger. It's me.

I- I'm still up here.

We're waiting for the

police to come get us.

So...

I'll see you soon.

And...

[crying] I'm so sorry, baby.

I- I love you.

[dial tone]

[dial tone]

[voice message] We're

sorry. You have reached

[sirens wailing]

[people yelling]

[dial tone]

[man] Oh my God!

[woman screaming]

-[thud]

-[woman screaming]

[Cop] Clear the area! Now!

[sirens wailing]

[cop] Keep moving folks. Keep moving!

[hangs up phone]

[Genelle] Pete. How long can we wait here?

Technically, not even

a jet airliner could knock

this building down, so let's just give them

a few more minutes

before we start freaking out.

Nora, are you okay?

How are you doing?

I want to speak to my

daughter, but I can't.

I'm going to try my sister.

[Anchor] It appears that

a second, large plane,

has just flown straight

into the World Trade Center

-from the other side.

-[phone ringing]

Again, I do not have confirmation,

[phone rings]

-Hello?

-Chris. Christine. It's me.

I've been trying to reach

you all morning! Are you okay?

Yes, but you have.

Don't tell me you're still in that tower.

Just listen to me, okay?

Tell-tell Kimberly I-I love her.

And call Roger for me and tell-tell him

[call disconnects] Genelle?

[Reporter] But the side

where the plane entered...

[dial tone]

[hangs up phone]

[Maxwell] I'll go make sure they're clear.

Phone's not working, so I don't know.

Have you seen how much smoke there is?

We can't get through all that.

[Pete] But the cops said

they're bringing oxygen tanks.

[Maxwell] For all of us? How many?

-[Pete] I don't know.

-[Nora whimpers]

-[Genelle] It's okay.

-[Nora whimpers]

[Reporter] This is as close as we can get

to the base of the World Trade Center.

You can see the firemen assembled here,

the police officers, FBI

agent-A huge expl*si*n now!

[loud expl*si*n]

[Pete] Oh my God!

[rumbling]

Oh!

Oh... no, no.

[screaming on tv]

We gotta go, we gotta go!

[Genelle] We're leaving, Sarah.

Even if we're the only ones.

Nora!

-[Pete] Let's go! Come on!

-Let's go!

[Man] Keep moving, everybody! Come on!

[Pete] Someone's gotta check.

[Maxwell] I'll go, I'll go, I'll go!

Okay! Stay here! I'll check the stairway!

[Pete] Go!

[coughing]

Flashlights! Get away! Move, move!

Okay.

Here.

-[Genelle] Pete, where is he?

-I don't know!

Where is he?

Come on!

[coughing and hacking violently]

The elevators are down,

but the stairways are clear!

We gotta get everybody down the stairs now!

Is this all of us? Is this everybody?

Yeah. Let's go! Go!

Stay together, everybody! Stay together!

Come on! Let's go!

Oh God, oh God!

Stay together everybody.

Oh, God!

Okay, come on, guys, keep it moving!

We got a long way to go!

Hey, Vasily, we gotta go, brother, now!

Come on! Let's go!

Come on, let's go. Come on.

[coughing]

[crying and whimpering]

[Anchor] A small...

[knocking]

-[news continues]

-Come in! It's open!

[gasps]

[Reporter] Can you hear me?

[Reporter] This is an

absolutely, stunning moment.

I believe that most of

the intelligence reports...

We have to believe she got out, right?

She got out, right?

[Sarah] Do you think we're the last ones?

[Maxwell] We're definitely the last ones.

Fifty-eight more to go. Is everyone okay?

[Sarah] I'm never gonna use

my stair climber ever again.

Where the hell are those cops?

[Peter] Can you explain

what has just happened?

[John] Yes. It's John down here.

I'm a few blocks from the twin towers.

The second building, the

south tower, has just collapsed.

Is there anybody here?

Is there anybody up here?

[Pete] About time!

Turn around! We're the last ones here!

I wish. We still got

people up there, trapped.

Use the railings. Keep moving, people.

Keep moving.

-Keep moving.

-Okay.

[phone rings]

-[TV] It's completely collapsed.

-Genelle?

Uh, no, it's-it's David.

David, did you hear what happened?

Yeah, I just saw it.

Is Genelle okay?

I haven't been able to get through to her.

Which one of those towers

does she work in again?

The north.

The one-the one that's still standing.

[TV] It just been decimated

There is panic in the streets.

Thousands of people running away,

from the building.

[panicked breathing]

[dramatic music intensifies]

[out of breath]

-[Genelle] Where's Nora?

-I think she's still up there.

Gen-Genelle, where the hell are you going?

Oh...

Oh, oh!

We gotta keep moving.

-Okay, we can do it.

-Genelle.

Keep going. We got her.

-Okay. Okay.

-Come on.

Oh!

Okay.

-Okay.

-One step at a time.

-Okay.

-Come on.

Come on, Nora, 30

floors to go. We'll help you.

Keep moving. Keep moving.

We got you.

She's coming.

Let's go.

I'm behind you.

[panting]

Okay.

All right.

All right.

Okay.

-[Man] Anthony, you okay?

-[Anthony] Yeah.

[screaming continues]

[groans]

[Sarah] Why don't you take those heels off?

I can't go barefoot.

Girl, this is Manhattan.

I gotta be stylish.

-Keep moving.

-Okay.

We're almost there, Sarah.

[electrical bursts and rumbling]

[Genelle] Sarah, let's go.

[TV] We are hearing

that possibly one or two

more airplanes have

been hijacked this morning.

[We won't know if the crash can be linked]

[to any of the events that have

occurred in the country today.]

[phone ringing]

-Hello?

-David?

This is Roger.

Roger.

Is-is Genelle okay?

She's missing.

She was supposed to meet me outside,

but then the tower fell.

[Roger sighs]

Nobody's heard from her since.

-Unless you...

-Uh, no.

Not since she talked

to Kimberly this morning.

-Did you check the hospitals?

-No sign of her yet.

She never should have left.

Look, I just want you to know.

I'm not going to stop

looking until I find her.

Kimberly needs her, Roger.

Now more than ever.

Yeah.

She needs to hear this from you.

[phone disconnects]

Roger? Hello?

Roger.

[dial tone]

Fifty down, fourteen to go. Come on, Sarah.

Ow.

Sarah, come on. You can make it.

[loud expl*si*n]

[rumbling]

-[rubble falling]

-[screaming]

-[rumbling]

-[screaming]

[rumbling]

[haunting music]

Oh.

[solemn music]

[coughing]

[solemn music]

[solemn music continues]

[sirens wailing in the distance]

[rumbling echoes]

[rumbling]

[rumbling fades out]

[Torello] How many men you got?

You got all the precincts coming in?

I got people coming in

from Queens, the Bronx.

But it's crazy out there, boss.

Spreaders, harnesses, K-12's, we good?

The boys already got 'em, Captain.

The rest of you, spread out!

Report your incident commander!

Williams, I want you

to set up staging areas

for search and rescue.

Let's go!

If there are survivors,

we have to find them fast!

[uneasy music]

[no service tone]

Reynaldo, have you seen my dad?

He asked me to stay with the truck.

Your dad went in, Kate.

They all did.

We gotta go in, too.

We gotta find them.

[somber music]

[music fades out]

[coughing]

[whimpering]

[whimpering]

-[coughing]

-[groans]

[scream]

Help!

Somebody!

Anybody, please!

[man groans]

Who's that?

[Man] Can you help me?

[coughing]

Maxwell, is that you?

[Maxwell] Can you help me?

[Genelle] Where are you?

[Genelle] Answer me.

[coughing]

[Genelle] Who-who is that?

Maxwell, is that you?

I'm Evan.

Evan Morgan.

NYPD.

Evan, I...

I can't see you, can you...

[Evan] Can't see you, either.

Are you trapped?

I can barely move.

[Evan] Me, too.

What's your name?

Genelle.

Genelle Guzman.

[Evan] There's gonna be a

rescue effort soon, Genelle.

Just hang in there, all right?

-Oh...

-[clicking]

Does it...

Does it hurt bad?

Not anymore.

Me neither.

How is that possible?

Body goes into shock.

So don't sleep, okay?

Help!

-[coughing]

-Help! Help us!

Can anybody hear us?

[Evan] Don't scream, Genelle.

Save your voice.

It's gonna be a while.

[Genelle whimpers]

[coughing]

-[buzzing]

-[coughing]

[buzzing]

[coughing]

-[coughing]

-Are you okay?

Are you okay, man?

I was supposed to meet

Genelle, but she never showed up.

I don't know where she is.

Maybe she made it out, yeah?

Maybe she's looking for you.

You gotta help me find her, bro.

-Of course. Of course.

-Let's get out of here.

[coughing]

[coughing]

Hey, are you okay?

She doesn't look good.

We're going to the hospital.

Why don't you come with us

so we can get you some help?

Yeah. Come on.

-Put your arm around me.

-Yeah, just like that.

[coughing]

Evan?

Talk to me.

I'm kind of tired.

You said hang in there.

You gotta hang in there, too.

Yeah, of course I will.

Of course I will.

Genelle.

Tell me about yourself.

[Genelle] Um...

Not much to tell.

Uh...

I like to...

I'm a singer.

[distant moans]

And I like to dance.

I don't make a living at it or anything.

I work at the Port Authority.

And I have my beautiful

14-year-old, Kimberly.

Kimmie, she's...

Oh. She's amazing.

[whimpering]

[Reporter] There are thousands...

[indiscernible chatter]

Excuse me, nurse.

Her name is Melissa.

[hospital chatter]

[Nurse] Okay. If you could just

bear with me for two minutes.

-Excuse me.

-Yeah.

Has a Genelle Guzman been admitted?

Spell Genelle?

G-E-N-E-L-L-E.

-Yeah.

-Guzman is G-U-Z.

Yeah, yeah, I know how to spell it.

She's not in the database.

If you could just check out the check-ins.

Maybe she just got here.

Her name isn't here.

All right. These are a

list of other hospitals.

-Next, please!

-Oh, wait!

Her real name is Judy.

Genelle is just a name she chose.

There were no Guzman's. Sorry.

Try Judy Guzman, please.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry.

[slams fist]

Next, please.

Mr. Moran?

-Yes.

-Am I right? Okay.

[rubble creaking]

[coughing]

[Evan] Genelle.

Talk to me.

Please.

I don't know what to say.

What do you want to hear?

Tell me about Trinidad.

Sounds like a romantic place.

Not if you were born there.

I'm from Brooklyn.

It's Paradise to me. [Chuckles]

Paradise?

Must've been great growing up there.

Tell me about it.

Please, Genelle.

There's always music

playing wherever you go.

Maybe that's why I'm such a diva.

Do you remember...

"Thriller"?

I know every song on the album.

A real entertainer, huh?

A real wannabe.

But

at least my mom believed in me.

She took me to church and,

and she got me in choir.

-I'm gonna check upstairs.

-Yeah.

Genelle!

-Genelle?

-Genelle?

Genelle?

[Reporter] It has been

reported that several people

have been rescued from

inside the North Tower.

And as the hours pass, it is less likely

that rescuers will find survivors

within the rubble.

[solemn, haunting music]

[metal clanking]

[Genelle coughing]

Tell me about your daughter, Genelle.

The day she was born,

they laid her on my stomach.

I couldn't believe I made

such a beautiful little girl.

I didn't want to leave her side,

and I never did.

Until two years ago

when I moved to New York

to make something better for us.

Although, it doesn't really matter now.

I should have visited Kimberly this summer.

Hell.

I should have never...

Evan, do you have kids?

Evan.

I- I asked you,

do you have kids?

Evan!

Damn it! Say something!

Evan, please!

Answer me!

Oh...

Oh...

[sobbing]

Oh! Oh, God!

[sobbing]

Please don't leave me here alone!

[sobbing]

Help me! Please!

Be safe, brother.

Genelle?

Roger.

Do you have any news?

No.

And I guess you haven't, either.

-Nothing.

-Roger.

Are you okay?

We searched everywhere.

All the hospitals, and

nothing.

What's it like down there?

[somber music]

[Anchor] As we continue to bring you news

of this tragic event, we

can with all certainty, say

this is one of the most

devastating tragedies

to have occurred in this country.

Our nation will be changed

forever from this day forward.

And we can only hope.

Help!

Please, somebody!

[thumping]

[struggling grunts]

Crush me in the dark!

No. No! No!

[grunts]

[cries out]

Hello?

Please, somebody!

[gasping]

Why?

Why? Is it because I'm tough?

You think I can take it?

Well, I don't want this.

I don't want to die!

Okay? Why? Why?!

[sobs]

[somber music]

[dial tone]

[sirens wailing in the distance]

[tense music]

[Genelle] Help.

Help.

Can anybody hear me?

Anybody!

Help!

Somebody, please! Help!

Kimberly!

Can you hear me, Kimmie?

Can you feel something now, Kimmie?

Anything.

Can you?

I felt you, baby.

Kicking inside me.

I felt the first touch of

your hand on my cheek.

I wouldn't let them take you away

until I counted every finger and toe.

My perfect child.

[coughs]

But I would have loved you no matter what.

Will you love me no matter what?

Even if I never see you again?

[tender music]

Will you remember our time together?

God.

Don't let me die!

Please.

I can't leave you,

Kimmie, I can't leave you.

Kimmie, wait.

Jeez, dad. I'll do my homework, I promise.

Is something wrong?

Oh, no.

Did-did you hear anything at school today?

About what?

The World Trade Center.

This morning, two jets

crashed into the towers.

Wait, that's... that's impossible.

I wish it was.

The buildings fell.

Mom's

mom's building.

Is-is she okay? Where is she?

I think so. But they

haven't heard anything.

Then how do you know she's okay?

How do you know she's okay, Dad?

-We have to stay positive.

-Dad, we have to go find her.

We have to keep.

Dad, mom's out there.

We have to go find her!

-Kimmie. Kimmie!

-We have to go find mom!

Wait! Kimmie!

Kimmie, wait!

Dad, we have to go. We

have to go to New York.

We have to find mom.

- Even if we went to New York-

- I don't care!

I don't care! I want to find

my mom. We have to go.

I know we have to find her, honey.

But we have to be patient, all right?

They're doing everything they can.

No! I want to be there. I

want to be there with her!

We have to be patient. We

have to let them do their job.

Patient for what? We have to go!

-We have to be there!

-We will be there.

No. You don't.

-Come here.

-You don't understand!

[sobbing]

[ragged breathing]

[panting]

[wailing]

I'm going to hell.

I'm going to go to hell.

[Kimmie] Mom...

Mommy. Mom, mom?

I'm here Mom.

You weren't why I left.

It wasn't you, Kimmie.

How long have I been gone?

Two years now.

For a dream...

[whimpers]

Kimberly...

Oh, God.

Kimberly!

[Reporter] As rescue teams continue to look

for survivors in the

basement area of the north

and south towers, we can only hope

that they will find someone, anyone alive.

There are hundreds of

firefighters and police offices

missing and presumed dead at this time.

but we continue to hope that

more survivors will be found.

Hey, sweetie.

Are you okay?

[solemn music]

[weak groan]

[whimpering]

[rubble creaking]

I didn't just leave her, God.

I had a plan.

A good one.

But I guess kids don't

care about plans, do they?

All they care about is now.

[rumbling, rubble falling]

[Genelle screaming]

[rubble crumbles]

[Anchor] Tonight there

are continued efforts

by rescuers here in New York City.

You are seeing footage that just came in.

Of the nighttime rescue operations

in and around the trade towers

that collapsed earlier today.

And we can only hope

that-that there will still be survivors

in the wreckage of the World Trade Center.

[rubble creaking]

[Genelle groans]

-[rumble]

-[coughing]

[Anchor] Firefighters that

they believe are missing

and presumed dead, and

dozens of police officers as well,

who were surrounding that building

when the two towers

essentially just crumbled,

crumbled into dust.

[solemn music]

[Robert] Robert Adams, corporal.

Massachusetts National Guard.

[Bill] Bill Jackson, ex-Marine.

She'll take you there...

Can you believe this?

Eight hours to Manhattan.

[Robert] Eight and a half.

Only took us four on Saint Paddy's day.

[coughing]

[struggles]

[weak groan]

[groans]

[sobs]

I don't know how much longer I can hold on.

I need your help.

Bad.

Please.

Please.

Please.

I need another chance.

God.

Are you listening?

Please.

Give me another chance.

[police radio chatter]

[melancholic music]

[tapping metal]

[tapping]

I think I'm d...

I think I'm dying.

[creaking]

Okay.

Won't ask for... any more miracles.

Just... strength.

[solemn music]

Come on, Trakr.

You still got it.

Come on. Let's go.

Heel.

I don't want to die.

Please save me.

Please save... me.

I just want you to know

how sorry I am.

For everything.

How can you forgive a

mother who...

Here we go.

Hello? Can you hear me?

Is there anybody down there?

Anybody?

Make a sound if you can hear me!

Make a sound!

Hey, boy. What are you doing up here?

Just making new friends. This is Trakr.

Trakr, huh?

Yeah.

Are you Search and Rescue?

Yeah. I retired though.

Until yesterday.

So, where are you from?

Halifax.

Damn.

Thanks for coming, man.

Yeah. Any luck?

I wish.

How long you been at it?

My shift started at 7 a.m.

Yesterday.

Hello!

[voice echoing]

Our father, who

art in heaven.

Hallowed be thy name.

[Genelle] Thy Kingdom come.

Thy will be done.

[frantic barking]

Hey! He's got a hit!

He's got a hit!

[barking continues]

Hello? Can you hear me?

Hello?

Make a noise!

We need to hear you!

I'll get rescue!

Yeah.

We need to hear you!

[frantic barking]

[grunts] Get it up!

[Kate] Okay, I got this side.

[Robert] Put it over here.

[crumbling thud]

Is somebody down there?

Make a sound if you can hear me!

[Captain] What's going

on? You find something?

[Kate] Captain, we gotta get down there.

Let's get a couple of harnesses and ropes

and a rescue tripod up here.

-[Torello] Reynaldo!

-[Reynaldo] On it, Captain.

[dramatic music]

All right. Good luck.

Let's go. Heel. Heel.

-[loud bang]

-Look out! Hey!

[Genelle whimpering]

-[Man] I got you.

-[Genelle whimpering]

I got you.

-[Genelle groans]

-You're okay. I got you.

Don't-don't let go.

I won't. I'll hold on, I promise.

Who are you?

Are you here to rescue me?

Yes, my name's Paul.

You're going to be okay.

They're coming to get you.

Listen.

Thank you.

Thank you so much.

Okay. We're gonna

need a halligan down here.

Where's the spreader?

Yeah, bring me that.

Push it down, push it down.

Okay.

I'm going in.

Hey. If it doesn't hold,

there's no getting out of there.

Yeah. Thanks.

Lose the helmet. Ain't gonna fit.

You see anything?

Uh.

Yeah. There's a void up there.

You think we can get through?

There's a lot of debris.

-This thing gonna hold?

-I don't know.

There's no going back now.

So tired...

No no no no no. No no

no. Hang on. Stay with me.

Okay? I know how exhausted

you are, but if you fall asleep,

you might not wake up.

Paul... how long?

Look, it's gonna be a while.

They got to get a rescue basket down here,

and there's not much room.

You think?

You're a very brave woman, Genelle.

Mmm.

Brave.

You didn't hear me freaking out.

I mean, who wouldn't freak out?

You've been down here for 23 hours.

Oh my God.

It is a miracle.

[grunting]

Where's the void?

Over here.

-Where?

-Down through here.

-Look out! Look out!

-[groaning]

-You good?

-Yeah.

Just stay with me, okay?

They're getting closer.

Listen.

I'm going to live.

He's giving me a chance

to have more time with Kimberly.

I don't deserve to be saved.

Genelle, you sound like

you destroyed this tower.

Like you got no right to be loved.

I don't.

Of course you do.

You just have to ask.

I ask for forgiveness.

All I feel is emptiness.

Genelle, listen to me.

Maybe you need to do some forgiving, too.

Who...

Who would I forgive?

Who do you think?

I need to forgive me.

Yeah, because I bet God already has.

[dramatic music]

I see somebody. Somebody's down there!

Hey, hey!

Hello!

I think he's dead.

The hell he is.

[loud rumbling]

We gotta get this guy out of here fast.

This whole place is gonna go!

-[electric sparking]

-Watch out, Captain!

Got wires melting! Electrical fire!

[Torello] Give me some hoses!

All the hoses have been used, Captain.

I'll call for backup.

[dramatic music]

[coughing]

-Reynaldo!

-Yeah!

Give me a couple of cans in here.

Hey Mike, let's get a couple of cans.

Cap.

[coughing]

[flames roaring]

Hey! Buddy!

Hey! Hey, buddy!

Buddy, buddy!

Hey!

[sighs]

Sergeant, do you read me?

We got a cop down here.

NYPD.

I'm here.

He's dead.

It'll take hours to dig him out.

[Torello] Pull up the rescue

basket, mark the spot.

We'll come back for him later.

Might still be somebody alive out there.

[sparks fly]

[hoarsely] Hello?

Can anybody hear me?

I'm here.

I'm here.

Paul!

Do you hear anything?

Well, where are they?

Don't worry, Genelle, I'm not leaving you.

[frantic barking]

[barking]

We're plugging this one.

I can't ask anybody else to

go in there. It's too dangerous.

Trakr! Trakr, come here! Hey!

Trakr! Trakr!

What is it? What's wrong?

What's wrong? There's

somebody alive down there!

Come on, Trakr!

-Who's that, Trakr?

-Torello!

[Vargas] Torello, you copy?

-[barking]

-[Vargas] Torello!

-Torello!

-[Torello] Go for Torello.

This rescue dog is going wild out here.

He's about 30 feet north of the hole.

Use your GPS. Take a look!

I'm on it.

Trakr!

Good boy. Yeah!

[tense music]

[weakly] Hey...

Can you hear me?

Hey...

[loud thudding and crumbling]

[loud thudding]

Hello?

Can anyone hear me?

Yes, but I can't move.

You're gonna be okay.

Just hang on.

Don't leave me. Please.

They're gonna be here soon.

Don't lose faith, Genelle.

I won't.

I promise.

[bittersweet music]

[tools whirring]

[grunts]

[rubble crumbling]

Hello? Hey!

You okay? Hello?

[Genelle] Hello?

What's your name, ma'am?

Genelle. Genelle Guzman.

We got a live one down here!

[Torello] Send down the rescue basket!

[clapping and cheering]

Yeah!

Good job, brother.

[Torello] I need help down

here. She's stuck under a slab!

[Good job!]

[cheering]

[bittersweet music]

[clapping and cheering]

Hey, how you doing?

Thank you so much.

Thank you, Genelle. You're a tough one.

Did you find Paul?

Paul?

He was down there with me.

He held my hand

until you got there.

Please.

I need to see him.

Yeah. There ain't no Paul on this crew.

Don't worry. I'll find him, okay?

Okay.

[ethereal music]

You're gonna be okay, Genelle.

[sirens blaring]

Make sure you see a doctor.

-Kate!

-Dad!

[sobbing] I thought I lost you.

Oh my God.

Oh!

[phone rings]

Hello?

Yes, this is Roger.

Just say it. Is she...

[hopeful music]

How's she doing?

[woman speaking over PA]

[beeping]

Excuse me.

-Roger.

-Baby.

I thought I lost you.

Is anything broken?

Are you in a lot of pain?

Hey...

I'm okay.

I looked everywhere for you.

Babe, I want us to be together

from now on, okay?

'Cause I can't lose you.

Honey.

Will you marry me?

Okay.

Okay.

As long as Kimmie gets to live with us.

Of course.

Okay.

[phone ringing]

[phone ringing]

[sighs]

Yeah.

Kimmie! Kimmie!

It's your mom!

-She's alive.

-[gasps]

Oh my god! Bring it!

-Mom!

-Hi, baby.

Mom, are you okay?

I- I'm a little banged up.

But I just love you so much.

Mom, I want to come to

New York. I wanna to see you.

As soon as I'm out of the hospital.

I- I was so scared, I.

Nothing, nothing is going

to come between us again.

Kimmie.

I am giving you a squeeze, darling.

Me too.

I love you so much.

I love you, mom.

-Come here.

-[laughing]

Told you she'd be alright.

[indistinct chatter]

All right. Thanks doc.

Maxwell.

Genelle!

Hey!

Oh my God.

How did you...

I don't know, Genelle.

I woke up on top of the rubble

with just a broken foot

and a mild concussion.

That's... that's all I have.

It's a miracle.

And-and Nora? And Sarah?

No.

No. Nobody made it. It's just us.

It's okay, brother. It's okay.

I guess we're the lucky ones.

Good luck, Genelle.

My family's waiting, but uh...

I'll call you.

Good luck to you, Maxwell.

Come on. Let's go.

[Genelle] What does it

mean to be the last survivor?

Every time I hear those words,

I'm reminded that after me,

nobody else was found alive.

That sadness haunts me.

But then I think of Roger, and Christine,

and my beautiful daughter, Kimberly.

[crying]

Roger and I got married and

Kimberly lives with us now.

It was all I wanted, but I

had unfinished business.

Finding Paul.

So I kept searching.

But except for me, nobody remembered Paul.

And how did he get to me

before the rescuers did?

I began to think maybe I'd imagined him,

conjured him out of my pain.

But the touch of Paul's hand was so real.

I never told him.

What?

Paul spoke my name.

I never told it to him.

It was like he already knew me.

Wait. What are you saying?

Paul was an angel.

My guardian angel.

There's a reason why I headed

down the stairs when I did.

And not sooner.

Why the building collapsed when it did.

And not a second later.

What is difficult for us to accept

is that we don't always know the reason.

But I know that

my love for my family and my faith.

And prayers to God kept me alive.

And it's through His mercy,

that I am able to share my story.
