Man 1: About a mile from

the mainland of Nova Scotia,

the eastern outpost of Canada,

lies Cape Breton Island,

where approximately

140,000 people

live a somewhat secluded

but progressive life.

Its coalmines extend

far under the sea.

From them comes the only

coal. As tidewater...

Man 2:

Here, miners work

in the world's

largest undersea mine.

Imagine mining coal under the

ocean, five miles...

Man 3: Coal miners

developed a strong sense

of community solidarity

and working-class consciousness.

It was based on a hatred for the

shifting absentee owners,

the harsh conditions of

work in the mines,

and the traditions of Scottish

culture and labour history.

Man 4: The PA called

down to announce

that the mine is closing.

I couldn't believe it.

Man 5: Today, there are

still 3,000 men

who dig coal under these waters,

but there were once 12,000.

Man 6: Like, I've spent over

half my life in the coal mine.

My father spent

38 years in the mine,

and he got his pension.

He's doing alright.

Man 7: All these guys

have had 20 years or more,

and now, the future

is so uncertain for them.

Prospects of finding employment

on this island are very low.

Man 8: And as

twilight settles

over this Pittsburgh of Canada,

Cape Breton awaits whatever

the morning may bring.

Architects

of the world

I walk your streets

and live in your towns

Temporarily architects

Of the world

You served

us well until now

But soon we'll be

We'll be

on our own

And I'll sleep

Sleep in your

nova heart

As things come apart

I'll hide

Hide in your

nova heart

At ease

with the thought

That this

nova won't burn out

Oh, oh, oh, oh

Man: They're taking it

this year. Mark my words.

Patty Roy is the best God

damn goaltender in the world.

Not happening, boy.

Not happening.

Can't beat them.

Twenty bucks.

Never see that money.

Look at this crisp daisy.

Geez. Must be nice to have

a wife do your laundry.

You wouldn't know about that,

would you? (laughing)

You fellas hear

about Harry's house,

when they were shifting it

off Louisbourg fort property?

Yeah. Shattered it like a box

of toothpicks, man. What a sin.

Yeah. Not paying nothing, neither.

Rest assured, boys.

I bet they don't even offer

that a fella a bottle of beer

-to drown his sorrows.

-Christ sakes, man.

(whistle blowing)

-Man: Morning, boys!

-Morning!

Man: Welcome to

the DEVCO Express.

(men chuckling)

This is the pre-boarding

announcement for flight 666.

Watch your heads when you

exit the vehicle, boys,

because we don't

want you coming up

any dumber than you already is.

-(some men chuckling)

-Smoking is prohibited

during the duration

of the flight.

-(men groaning)

-Bullshit.

Come on, Jake. That

includes you too, boy.

Enjoy your flight,

boys, and good luck.

(man laughing)

(chattering)

(machine grinding loudly)

(machine grinding loudly)

(machine grinding loudly)

Shut her down!

(machine stopping, air hissing)

Do you hear that?

Man: Get out of there! Move!

Get out! Get out!

-Everybody out now!

-Christ.

Move it! Go!

We got smoke, boys!

We got to go!

Go, go, go!

Go, go, go!

Come on, boys! Everybody out!

Let's go! Let's go!

Leave it behind you!

Go, boys! Go!

(coughing)

Gentlemen, this is Bob, and

we got an emergency!

(shouting indistinctly)

-Keep going, boys!

-It's going to blow!

Keep f*cking going!

I'll be right behind you, boys!

Come on, boys!

Let's go! Get out!

Let's go! Right behind

you! Go, boys! Go!

Keep going, boys!

(rumbling)

Keep going!

(rumbling)

Ah!

(woman speaking

indistinctly on TV)

(TV noise continuing)

(TV noise continuing)

(door opening)

Woman:

Emma!

Emma, come now!

Hurry!

Emma:

Oh, God.

(siren wailing distantly)

It's a working

man I am

I've been down

underground

I swear to God

If I ever see

The sun

Or for any

length of time

I can hold it

In my mind

Never again will

go down

Underground

It's a working

man I am

And I been down

underground

And I swear

to God

Jesus, Mary, and

Joseph. Look at it.

The sun

Donnie: I thought

he was dead.

You can't k*ll a cat

with ten lives, Donnie.

Or for any

length of time

I tell you, some folks

are not going to be

too happy to see you.

-We'll see about that.

-Agnes: Turn around.

Never again will

go down

Underground

(singing continuing faintly)

(door opening)

Did you miss me?

No.

We have to do this now?

-This funeral going on.

-Oh.

Gordy: God

damn tragedy.

Oh, Gordy.

It sure is. It

sure is.

Gordy: Let's

do it tomorrow.

We'll get some drinks.

You know, I got the boat.

Got the captain.

What I don't have is

the go ahead.

(clock striking the hour)

-Crew?

-Not yet, but I will.

(clock continuing to strike)

Man:

This week,

we lost the lives

of ten men,

faithful, determined,

hard-working men

who lived and died

in service to their families

and to this community.

Let us pray.

(bagpipes playing)

Ah, it's about perfect weather

for a funeral, isn't it?

Gordy: Mm. If there

is such a thing.

Yeah.

God. f*cking nerve.

Jimmy. Language.

(bagpipe music continuing)

Huey: Well, what a

pleasure it is

to finally meet you,

Emma! How are you?

I was meant to meet you

at our wedding,

but you didn't show.

Huey: Yeah, and I won't be

missing any more family affairs.

-I tell you that. Yeah.

-Right.

Oh, look at what

we got here! Oh, now.

Emma: Yeah. This is

Sue and Jacky.

You're just a darling.

Who is this?

This here is

your great uncle Huey.

Oh, come on.

Go easy on me.

I'm not a museum piece yet.

You can call me Uncle Huey.

Could we, uh...

Just a... just a few.

-Sure.

-Thank you.

Say bye to your uncle Huey.

Jackson: Bye, Uncle Huey.

Bye!

Well, some tragedy.

I'll tell you.

Ah, tragedy's one word for it,

but better off working

in a house of cards.

Yeah, but boys, oh, boys,

you got a rough

road ahead of you,

being out of work.

What are you doing here, Uncle?

Thought you were dead.

-Dead?

-Dead.

Ha! I been up

in Newfoundland.

I been, uh, over in

Montreal for a while,

and now, I'm fishing.

-Fishing?

-Oh, I got a great boat.

You got to come out some time.

I got a great captain.

I tell you, he'd have you

seasoned in a week.

I'm a miner, not a fisherman.

I'm not looking for fishermen.

I'm looking for, uh,

men who can work,

men, uh, men I can trust,

like family, like you.

Well, if you change your mind,

let me know!

The prodigal sinner returns.

Huey:

Hello, Father.

You going to be here

tomorrow morning?

Of course.

Mass, 10 AM.

Good. I'm going

to come by,

and I'm going to fill up that

little wooden box of yours.

My confessional's not

big enough for all your sins!

-Yes!

-You and I both know that!

Man: What are you

having, Jimmy?

(lively music playing,

people chattering)

Two Pepsis, Freddy.

It's a hard time

to be off the piss.

(music, chattering continuing)

Father.

(music, chattering continuing)

To Bobby!

Crowd:

To Bobby!

(music, chattering continuing)

A cold pint would be pretty

good right about now.

(music, chattering continuing)

-Come dance with me.

-No.

-Yes.

-No.

-Yes.

-No.

(laughing) Yeah.

Whoa!

(song ending)

(crowd applauding)

Sociable!

Crowd:

Sociable!

(crowd applauding)

Jimmy: Thank you, Lord,

for our family, our health,

and for keeping us together

through our struggles.

Amen.

-Amen.

-Amen.

I figured out what

I want for my birthday.

-Did you?

-Did he?

Jacky: Basketball sneakers.

(sighing) You already

have sneakers, bud.

They're Michael Jordans.

He's mining for coal,

not gold, sweetie.

(whispering) You know, I

actually am digging for gold

down there. It just

hasn't turned up yet.

When it does, it'll be all yours.

Michael Jordans for

everybody, okay?

Alright.

He deserves those sneakers.

It isn't a bad thing

for them to accept our

life as it is.

(grunting) Yeah,

but... still.

Mm.

I'm exhausted.

(seagulls calling)

(seagulls calling)

(gasping)

(panting)

It's alright, Jim.

Oh, God.

(crickets chirping,

people chattering faintly)

(chattering louder)

Man 1: The f*ck

is this guy?

Man 2:

He's always late.

-(unclear) guy.

-Hey, Jimmy.

-How you doing there, my man?

-You good?

Good to see you. Yeah.

I'm fine, buddy.

(chatter continuing)

(chatter continuing)

(chatter continuing)

-Man 3: Ah, there he is!

-Man 4: Oh, there he is!

Man 5: What's going on, buddy?

Man 6: You're f*cking

late, you piece of sh*t!

(men shouting)

Man with glasses: Calm

down so I can speak.

The engineer's report came back,

-and it's not good.

-(men shouting)

It's leaking water

on three levels.

-(men shouting)

-Let me finish!

-Let me finish!

-How long to patch her up?

(men chattering)

Man with glasses:

They can't.

What the f*ck do you

mean, they can't?

-What do you mean, they can't?

-They're shutting it down.

(men shouting)

There are no more pit

jobs on the island!

If you want a transfer,

we can send you to

Westray on the mainland!

You are supposed

to be on our side!

Man with glasses:

I am on your side!

-(men shouting)

-Nah! f*ck you!

I've got three grand for

anyone who's willing to go!

(men chattering, subdued)

Man 7:

It's a start.

(chatter continuing)

It's a start.

Is that what our

f*cking life's worth?!

(men shouting)

(voice speaking

indistinctly on radio)

How'd it go?

(man speaking

indistinctly on radio)

Jimmy: Hey, you. Does Jackson

use the dinosaur bag?

-No. They traded.

-They traded?

-Mm-hmm.

-Okay.

Not... not that one.

Okay.

Okay. Hey, Sue!

Come on, now!

Emma: Think you can stay

out of trouble?

I'm off to paint at the fortress.

You know they're just going

to kick you out again.

You don't know that!

(Jimmy chuckling)

What the hell am I

supposed to do with my day?

Think about how we're going

to put food on the table.

(seagulls calling)

(sheep bleating)

(sheep bleating)

Uh, excuse me.

Is this one for sale?

Can I buy it?

Emma:

Sure.

-Buyer: Here you go.

-Thank you.

Buyer: You're welcome.

You have a good day.

Emma:

Thank you.

-Woman with scarf: Hi.

-Hi.

Mm. So, do you have your, uh,

vendor's permit you can show me?

Is that really necessary?

Woman with scarf:

It is.

Huey: Boy, she's some

beautiful day, huh?

What are you doing here, Huey?

Uh, well, I come

to offer Jimmy a job.

Oh.

First I'm hearing of it.

Huey: Well, I hear the

mine's closing.

Emma: I'll put the kettle on.

You know, um, I'm not

sure he trusts you.

Not sure I do,

either, to be honest,

and, uh...

(chuckling)

Well, I've only

heard the stories.

You think you could talk to him?

(Emma chuckling)

(chuckling)

Well, so what if I can?

Huey: Look. This

job won't be easy.

But I will always bring him home.

And the money's good, Emma,

really good.

Jimmy: What do I

know about lobster boats?

(Emma chuckling)

You can learn.

You said Huey was good

to you when you were a kid.

People deserve second

chances, don't you think?

This was my grandfather's.

He was a great man.

If I can get Jimmy to

come work with you,

he always come home.

That's your promise to me.

Do you understand?

This is our bond, you and me.

After supper, I need to talk

to the boys about Westray.

Westray is a deathtrap, Jimmy!

Please don't do that to us.

Please?

Yeah. I promise.

Emma:

Hmm.

Blessed are you, O Lord.

Shine your light into

the darkness of our lives...

Oh.

Emma: And show us

the path to prosperity.

Well.

In your name.

Amen.

(music playing,

people chattering)

(music, chattering continuing)

(grunting) Geez.

Like, all...

all I'm saying is,

$3,000 is nothing.

It's $3,000 and a job.

(music, chattering continuing)

Tommy: I'll take a

beer this time.

Oh, Jesus.

I'm not even drinking.

Can we play for

meat or something?

Tommy: It's not

my problem.

Plus, given your history,

you not drinking is

better for all of us.

Jake: That's right, now,

given your history.

Stop saying "given

my history."

Both: Well, given

your history.

-You got a bit of a history.

-You got a bit of a history.

Well, my uncle's asking for me

to work his fishing boat.

-Fishing boat?

-Fishing boat.

The f*ck do you

know about fishing?

-Nothing.

-Huey?

(music, chattering continuing)

Jesus Christ. I thought

you had a good idea.

Who's Huey?

He was the master puppeteer

behind the entire

Cape Breton gambling circuit

for, what, 15 years?

That was a long time ago.

Back in the day,

after my dad passed,

Huey always took care of me.

You can't be serious.

I'm out of options, Tommy.

It's him or Westray for me.

Well, out of those

two death traps,

you got me thinking Westray

isn't so bad after all.

Hear me out.

(music, chattering continuing)

We got to start thinking

about ourselves,

or we're done.

Huey is offering us steady

work on a lobster boat,

and I'm ready for

something different.

(music, chattering continuing)

Come on.

(music, chattering continuing)

-So, no funny stuff?

-You can't promise that.

That's true, but if I'm going

to be out there slogging it out,

I want you out there next to me,

and you, like always.

(music, chattering continuing)

f*ck it.

Give me the f*cking darts.

(music, chattering continuing)

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

Yeah?

Ah, f*ck it.

-f*ck it.

-f*ck it.

Man: You fellas

hear about Rachel Kennedy?

No. What happened?

Well, she's dead.

You going to tell them all

the swimming you can do

is flapping around

getting out of the bath?

(chuckling) Yeah. How about you

keep that little tidbit

to yourself

there, Tommy, would you?

(seagulls calling)

Your secret's safe.

Thank you.

Think we'll be doing

much swimming, though?

-Boys!

-Hope not.

How you making out there, Jim?

Fisherman: Look at the f*cking

golden girls coming here.

-Hi, girls!

-Sheesh!

So, actually, the beauty shop

is just across from the

ball diamond on Wolf Street.

You're going to want to go

in and ask for Linda.

She'll get your

nails done right up,

and you, sir, are going

to want to ask for Cavell.

Morning, boys! Yep!

She's a fine day for it, eh?

-Sky's looking... Phew! Dandy.

-Yeah.

I reckon we'll be casting the

lines off here in no time,

eh, boys? Right on.

Happy trapping. Okay.

What the f*ck is he

talking about?

Huey!

Hey, hey, fellas!

Jake:

Hey!

Welcome to your

new home away from home,

the Augustina!

Boy, I'm some glad you made it.

I got to do it for my family.

Ah, nephew, I'm your family.

You do it for me!

(seagulls calling)

Hi, Huey. Tommy.

Tommy, how are you?

-And who's this?

-This is, uh, Jake.

-Huey: Jake.

-How are you, Huey?

This is your captain,

Alphonse Thibault.

He came down with me from Quebec,

and he knows everything

there is to know

about running this rig,

so you listen to him.

Alphonse: Where'd you

find these guys, huh?

They never been on

a boat. Look at them.

-Huey: So? Teach them.

-Teach them.

Huey: Come on.

Move. Move.

(speaking French)

One of you unmoor us.

Is that untie?

Yes, untie us. Away.

You ever done that before?

-Is this part connected?

-(speaking French)

Look. I hope you

guys are ready

to do some real

hard fishing, okay?

Because we're talking

about doing real work here!

We work.

It's all we know.

-(Alphonse muttering in French)

-I can't wait.

I'm ready for

sunshine, fresh air...

(retching loudly)

They call that

chumming the water.

(laughing) That's disgusting.

(groaning)

Are you guys not sick?

No.

Here we go. Alright.

That's it. Good job.

Alright. Up.

(grunting)

There we go.

Okay, Mr. Puker.

Let's go.

-(Jake groaning)

-Hold the trap.

You see, this is

called the carapace.

-What?

-Carapace.

It's like, uh, a land bug, you

know? It's the thorax.

This one is too small.

-What do we do?

-Throw it back over.

We throw it back. Here.

Just take it. Come on.

It's not going to bite you.

Maybe a little.

Alright, boys!

-Let's pack her in.

-Jake: Oh, thank God.

We got weather coming.

So, we'll be back tomorrow.

How's, uh, $200

sound? Each.

Each?

Call it a starting bonus.

You.

How you feeling, buddy?

Yeah. Keep your pecker up.

Tomorrow, buy some waterproofs,

some boots, some

real seafaring gear, okay?

Same time tomorrow, boys.

Tommy:

Whoo!

Hey!

Hi.

What's gotten into you?

I think it's that good ocean air.

Oh.

It hits hard

No doubt

The kids are still at school.

Perfect.

When the truth

lies there

Like that

So unashamed

I got me sea legs.

Unstained

I never lied

Or told the truth

What's this for?

The shoes he wanted.

Can you grab them? I'm going to

be lobster-ing tomorrow.

How do you look

at me now?

You can

tell me how

Should I leave?

Or wait around?

I can't believe your uncle

came through like this.

You were right.

I'll wait around

I'll wait around

(shutting off motor)

Alphonse:

Hey, hey, Huey?

-Huey: Yeah?

-Alphonse: There she is.

Huey:

Ah.

Oh, hallelujah!

What's going on?

Well, fellas,

your lobster season,

it doesn't last forever.

I want you to hear me.

This world,

it's made of pigs and patsies.

Now, if you want to be a pig,

some days, you got to get

dirty in the slop.

We... we got enough

in our troughs, Huey.

We... we don't want to add

criminal to the resume.

I'd never let that happen.

Alright. Let's

get at her.

(motor starting)

f*ck!

Huey: Ooh, ain't that

a beautiful sight?

Alphonse: Jake,

come grab the wheel.

I need you to man the helm

while we're gone.

Okay. Now, you keep us

close but not too close.

If you get too close, you have

to back up a little, okay?

Drop her down!

It'll be good.

You got it?

Yeah. Uh, I think so.

Don't think. Do.

Okay. I got

it. Okay.

Ready? Alright.

Let's go.

Alright, guys.

Tommy, Jimmy, let's go!

What the hell did you

get us into, Jim?

Alphonse:

Okay, Jimmy.

Nice and smooth!

Good job, Jake!

Jimmy:

Hey, come on.

Timmy.

Man: Huey, you b*stard.

How are you?

(unclear).

Good to see you, mate.

-How they hanging?

-Tim: Yeah, good.

It's been too long.

A few big changes since

Montreal, I imagine.

Yeah, a few, thanks to you.

Yeah. Well, you know I'm going

to make up for that mess-up.

I just hope I don't sink

that little dinghy of yours.

(Tim laughing)

Capitn!

(shouting in Spanish)

(speaking Spanish)

-(crewmen laughing)

-Tim: Oh, come on.

-Huey: What's funny?

-Eh? Oh, he's just making jokes

about your tiny boat.

I wouldn't take it to heart.

Forget about the boat!

Where's the cash?

Here you go.

(zipper opening)

Alright. It's all there.

(zipper closing)

It's all yours.

Rico, you could have

passed it to him.

What?

Jimmy.

Alright. Let's go, boys!

-Tommy!

-Tommy: Yeah. Right here.

(grunting)

Now, uh, hey, get the gaff

and get the bundles in, then.

Away.

Alright, boys!

-(Jake grunting)

-Get them all!

(Jake grunting)

Come on! Get them all!

Oh, f*ck.

Is this what I think it is?

It's like bobbing for

apples, isn't it?

Tommy:

That one.

Huey:

Get them up!

Come on.

Alphonse:

Hey, Tommy!

Tommy, bring the bundles!

Put it in there!

(grunting)

I'll hand them to you.

-Where? In there?

-Yeah, in there.

Tommy: Get down in

there? f*ck.

-Alphonse: Get down in there.

-Christ.

Alphonse: Don't

step on the wire.

(Tommy groaning)

Tommy: f*ck.

What's down here?

Nothing. Just stack the

bundles down there, okay?

Bullshit.

Hey, boys! We'll

be back soon!

Next time, bring

a proper boat, eh?

Not that f*cking bath toy!

Tommy:

Oh, God.

-Alphonse: Is it full?

-Tommy: Yeah, it's good.

Not too bad for the

first time, huh?

(phone ringing)

800-COCAINE. Tara speaking.

May I help you?

Man 1:

Cocaine,

America's $34-billion fad,

creates a feeling of euphoria,

-dependency, sometimes death.

-(g*n firing, siren wailing)

Cocaine and its profits have

triggered brutal slayings

committed by a new breed of

organized criminals.

Man 2: Seizures of the

drug have hit an all-time high,

and police are saying what

they're getting

is just a small fraction

of what's coming in.

These are the trophies

of the battle,

false-bottomed

suitcases, body vests,

all ingenious hiding places

that weren't ingenious

enough to fool officials.

The profit for some is

apparently worth the risk.

I think it's sick what people

do to make a buck in it.

Man 3: American authorities

say, whatever is done,

the drugs have got to be stopped

before they reach the

North American shoreline.

Man 4: (distorted) If the

American people would stop

snorting all these drugs, we'd

stop it picking out of the ocean

and send it straight

up their noses.

(seagulls calling)

As the fire

rages on and on

The lonesome count

the sick and wicked faces

Until dawn

You'll find me in the bedroom

with the blinds all drawn

You come

telling lies

Till I'm back

to sleep

While my body

cannot feel at home

Huey: Let's move it,

boys! Quick!

It was never lobster.

It was always drugs.

Well, let's just say

it's not, uh, Christmas presents

for impoverished youth.

Just keep your head down

and your nose clean.

We'll all be on holiday soon.

You betcha.

Come. Come. Come.

Clouded eyes

that call upon a storm

Come on.

Staring down a face

I've seen before

She says don't look

out the window

Here the

inside's warm

Be warned

That it?

And it comes cold

black and deep

For the love I've

thrown away I'll weep

Hate alone is the

treasure that I'll keep

But the line

Huey:

Hey, Gordy?

There you go.

-Gordy: All there?

-Good man.

Cold black

(car door closing)

And deep

Ah, I... I can't

take that.

Course you can.

Uh-uh.

What are you going to

do without it? Huh?

You going to leave your home?

Go to Westray?

Come on.

Listen.

If we get this done smooth,

a month or two,

we're out clean.

You can have a fresh start.

Once a crook, always a

crook, huh, Jimmy?

What?

(shouting) You know,

when you mutts...

Were down below,

digging with your little

picks in the devil's bowels,

I was above ground!

Making plans for us,

and a good plan, too,

a plan that would save us all

from a fate worse than death,

a plan that stopped you

from slogging away day after day

with your body broken

and pain all your life,

nothing to remember you by!

You call me a crook!

You know who does that?

The ones who shuttered

the cod industry,

stripped this whole

district of jobs.

You've had everything

stolen from you!

All of it!

Your homes! Your jobs!

And worse of all, your pride.

Yeah.

Come on, Jimmy.

Be a good dog.

Put your paw out.

There we go.

Five thousand each.

And you,

if you ever call me

a crook again,

you ungrateful son of a b*tch,

you'll be overboard with

the lobsters.

Do you want it or not?

You better f*cking...

Why don't you walk home?

What a f*cking crew.

Hey.

-Yeah.

-Come on.

Woman on TV: Tensions

are rising in Louisbourg

as families protest the

government's removal

of their homes to expand...

Well, are they

metal traps or wood?

I need a better description.

If you're telling me

they're stolen...

Captain Douglas?

I got to call you back.

(hanging up phone)

Can I help yous?

I'm Oscar Lozano.

I'm an agent of Interpol.

(scoffing) Interpol?

What are you, lost?

Can we speak in private?

Sure. Uh...

Yeah.

It's been a long journey.

Let me get a coffee, black,

when you have it.

Go on. Coffee, black.

You heard him.

Officer: He was looking at you!

Did you get the Justice

Department letter?

Uh... could you

give me a minute?

I'll summarize it.

We have a big problem

coming from South America

with the ill*gal

distribution of narcotics.

I've been sent

to discover the facts

and arrest the perpetrators.

Right on.

(tapping paper)

Oscar: I'm sure you heard

about the drug bust

in Newfoundland last week.

Douglas: As I'm

sure you're aware,

that's an

entirely different province.

-Oscar: Captain...

-(knocking)

Come in!

There you go.

Thank you.

What is this?

Powdered creamer.

You got to stir it.

Captain, international

smugglers have been using

seaside towns like yours

as an access point to

North America.

So?

Alright, hermano.

I've been tracking this

case for nearly two years,

and my people in

Montreal assures me

this is the area to investigate.

Aqu.

(sighing)

(paper rustling)

What's your plan?

You and me,

we're going to plug the hole.

Oh, boy.

(engine turning off)

Agnes:

Mr. Lo-zan-o.

Welcome to Cape Breton.

It's, uh, Lo-saw-no.

-Oh.

-Yes.

Lo... Lo-za...

Lo-zaw-no.

Los... Lo-saw-no.

My husband, Donnie, will

show you to your room.

-Thank you.

-(dinging)

Donnie, show him to his room.

(Agnes chuckling)

Okay. Let's have a

look here now.

-It's number seven.

-Right.

-It's number seven.

-Yeah, number seven.

So it's the last... It's

got the seven on it.

-Okay.

-Here we go.

Oh.

-Found it.

-Okay.

-Have a great night.

-You too.

-Oscar: I'll walk you out, man.

-Donnie: This way.

-Oscar: Sorry.

-Donnie: It's okay.

Mr. Lozano.

Lozano. Lozano.

(grunting)

Well, I'll leave you to it.

Oscar:

Thank you.

Cape Breton.

(people chattering)

Jimmy:

Boys.

Hey.

Jimmy, how you making out, there?

Eh.

Better than the burgers.

(Jimmy laughing)

We don't know what they're

doing on that boat, you know.

-You know what I think?

-What?

I think what they miss the most

is showering together.

(laughing)

Yeah, right.

Enough of that.

You would say that, wouldn't you?

Lock your sights

Dead in line with

my heart

Share your powers

You stir my soul

(camera snapping)

And whet my hunger

(camera snapping)

And weave that spell that

pulls me under

(camera snapping)

Oh these moonlight

desires haunt me

Happy birthday

They want me

To you

They want me

Happy birthday

To you

Happy birthday

Dear Jackson

Happy birthday

To you

Happy birthday

to you

Dear Jacky, baby!

Happy birthday

to you

Let's park your bum

in this boogie.

Come on!

No way!

Way! Try her out!

What you doing here?

I told you I'll never

miss another family celebration.

I meant it.

Okay.

Alphonse: One, two,

three. (grunting)

Yes!

Emma: Well, it's... it's

time to cut the cake.

-Huey, Jacky: Yeah.

-Huey: Let me see

-some wheelies.

-Emma: Who wants cake?

Here we go.

Jackson, over here.

Uh-huh.

(crickets chirping)

Jacky, your father and I have

one more present for you.

Happy birthday, son.

Give me that.

Michael Jordans?

-(laughing) Can you believe it?

-(phone ringing)

I bet that's your gran calling

to wish you a happy birthday.

Jimmy:

Mm-hmm.

(Jimmy laughing)

Hello?

Huey: Hello, dear.

Put Jimmy on for me?

We're having a bit

of family time.

Huey: Oh, it'll only

take a second. Promise.

Jimmy, it's your uncle.

(Jimmy clearing throat)

(clearing throat) Hello.

Huey: We're

working tomorrow.

Don't be late.

Oh, I got... I got plans with

Emma and the kids.

Huey: Jimmy,

this isn't optional.

I'll see yous at the wharf.

(slamming phone down)

He knows better

than calling at this hour.

He wants me to work tomorrow.

Just tell him you can't!

Well, I... I don't

have a f*cking choice!

I mean,

it's... Jesus Christ.

It's not up to me.

(softly) Emma,

I didn't mean that.

I shouldn't curse.

Jacky:

It's okay.

I'm sorry.

(muffled music playing)

Look.

-Uh...

-Take that one right there.

(snorting)

Something funny going on

with that one now.

Yeah. Go figure, huh?

(camera snapping)

Africana, African

and white

You're closer than

you really ever know

Agnes:

Good morning.

And we all run

the risk of

-Thank you.

-Yeah.

I don't know

Life is a fever

(speaking Spanish)

In Israel

Listen. No one here

would go against them.

All I'm saying is, there's

something going on.

Don't go spinning tales, Franny.

They're fishermen.

Simple as that.

That's right.

Sally:

No matter what,

their secret's safe with us.

Good.

Life is a fever

in Israel

Our life

is just a fever

(seagulls calling)

Who's buddy with the hair?

Here we go.

Yeah.

-Hey, Hugh?

-Yeah?

Cmo ests?

What? Have we met?

Not yet, but I've come

a long way to talk to you.

How long have you had this boat?

Huey: Oh, I don't

know. Couple of years.

You're dressed like

you work in an office.

Oh, you could call me

administration.

What about you,

Mr. New Pantalones?

You look nervous there, nervioso.

Maybe I could by

for a tour sometime.

No, no. This is a

dangerous thing, this boat.

-Oscar: Uh-huh.

-You could put your foot

in the wrong rope.

You'd be overboard

with the lobsters

like that. (snapping)

That might sound like a threat

if I didn't know better.

-(phone ringing)

-Captain Douglas's office.

Hello,

Mr. McConnell.

I know you're not a drug dealer.

Donnie:

Oscar?

This came for you today.

Oscar:

Nice.

(speaking Spanish)

Smell it.

(sniffing) Ah.

I heard you made a new friend,

that foreign cop.

He know anything?

-(phone ringing)

-Douglas: I know your son's

-a hard worker.

-(speaking Spanish)

Only that I am an

upstanding citizen...

who's trying to do something

about the unemployment situation

in Cape Breton.

Okay. I'll

make sure he knows.

-(slamming)

-(phone ringing)

-(phone ringing)

-CBPD. Sorry. No.

(phone ringing)

What's this?

It's light. You are

missing one.

That... that's what came

off the boat, so...

(car door closing,

engine starting)

f*ck.

(phones ringing)

(knocking)

Did you hear that?

I got family, friends, and

fishermen calling me nonstop,

rightfully furious

that you're making them look

-like drug smugglers.

-Are they?

How the hell should I

know? (scoffing)

Have some coffee, man.

I thought you knew what's going

on in South America.

Uh...

This my brother, Andre Lozano.

He was k*lled outside our home

over a mistaken identity.

So, when you get upset

about my tactics,

just know this is bigger

than upsetting a few locals.

Have a sip of that.

It's Colombian coffee.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

(speaking Spanish)

(knocking)

Come in.

This was discovered about an

hour ago on Eastern Beach.

Somebody will be real pissed

when they find out

this is missing.

(man speaking Spanish)

Let's go, boys!

Time is of the essence!

(Tim's crew speaking Spanish)

Hey. Give me

that flare g*n.

(Tim's crew speaking Spanish)

What are you up to?

I don't know.

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

-What?

-I'll go. You stay.

-I can go. I'll go.

-Hey.

I got it.

-Are you sure?

-Yeah.

Alright. Be careful.

(Tim's crew speaking Spanish)

Tim: Come on, guys! What

are you waiting for,

a cold drink and a towel?

There's no pool.

It's not the bloody

Royal Caribbean.

Come on! Chop chop!

I've got a lobster dinner

in Louisbourg tonight,

not to mention

a tour of the fort.

I'm not missing that.

Here's the guys you

want to talk to.

-Rico: Oh.

-Buenos dias.

Buenos dias.

(speaking Spanish)

Tim:

Ah, no.

-(speaking Spanish)

-Hey! Get off.

Tim: He's asking about the

drugs and the Interpol agent.

I mean, you dropped

a package into the sea?

Are you f*cking kidding me?

Well, if everybody's going

to be dropping drugs

from every angle in

this part of the ocean,

somebody's going

to get nabbed for it,

and it ain't going to be us.

-Hey!

-(speaking Spanish)

Tim: He wants the money for the

f*cking drugs that you lost,

and he's not going to

take an IOU, buddy.

It was a whoops-y,

an accidente.

Rico.

Come on.

-(Rico speaking Spanish)

-Huey: Jumpy.

Tim: Guys, we

got to get along

if we're going to make this work.

(Rico speaking Spanish)

Send that c**t

back to the jungle.

-Hey! Ah!

-Ah!

-Hey!

-Someone is going to send you

to the jungle.

Jimmy: Back the

f*ck up!

(Huey shouting in pain)

Hey! Hey! Back... back

the f*ck up!

-Jesus Christ.

-(Rico, captain laughing)

-Back up!

-(Rico, captain laughing)

I can get the Coast Guard

here in 10 minutes!

(laughing)

Translate that! Thibault,

get him the f*ck out of here!

-Jesus Christ.

-(crew speaking Spanish)

Hey! Hands!

Come on. We're

all friends here, mate.

Get the cash, throw

the bundles over,

and we all go home happy.

Is that understood?

(speaking Spanish)

(crew speaking Spanish)

-Huey: Got my finger?

-Jesus Christ.

-What the hell happened?

-Help me!

-Here.

-He cut my finger!

Hey, Tommy, get

the first aid kit, yeah?

(groaning)

Huey: You got to

stop the bleeding.

-Come on, guys.

-(Jimmy speaking indistinctly)

Help me.

Ah! No!

(groaning)

My God.

Some warning would be nice.

Yeah. Well, I could

say the same thing for you!

You listen to me!

I am running the

drops from now on!

I am not having you get me or my

friends k*lled over this sh*t!

You hear me?

Do you hear me?

-(growling)

-Ow!

There's the Jimmy

I've been looking for.

There he is.

Alright, now! Get those bundles

out of that f*cking ocean!

Come on!

Don't leave a single one.

Come on!

Are you working?

I'm not paying you for nothing.

Get her going!

Good men don't end up in

situations like this, do they?

We're good men, Tommy.

Nothing's going to change that.

(birds chirping distantly)

Emma:: What's going on?

What's weighing on you?

Jimmy: The job with Huey.

Just don't know if it's for me.

Our lives have changed so

much in the past few weeks,

and that's because of you.

You did that.

You're providing for our family.

We get to start

our days together.

Tim: Hey, pick up

those floaters!

You know what happened

the last time!

Oh, Huey! Hey, Huey!

Take care of yourself, okay?

I've still got big plans for us!

Alphonse: Here we go.

There's some more.

Tommy: Alright.

That's it.

-Alphonse: Yeah. We full?

-Tommy: No more.

Hey, grab the other bundles and

put them in the lobster box.

Alright. Let's go.

Tim: Alright! We'll

see you in two weeks!

Don't keep me waiting!

Alphonse: Hey, les

boys! Cast off!

(calling)

I think we have something, huh?

(seagulls calling)

Hey, les boys,

be cool, huh?

We got some tourists.

(boat horn honking)

Give me those.

-Oh, f*ck.

-Hey.

Boys on to us, boys!

We got a boat load of

f*cking cocaine!

It's been all over the

f*cking news!

-Alphonse: Ferme ta gueule!

-(men shouting)

They know that we're doing this!

-Jimmy: Come on! Hey! Listen!

-We're f*cked!

I'll do the talking!

Huey:

No! I will.

It's going to be alright.

Sit down.

Okay.

Everything will be fine.

Man on megaphone:

Cut your engines.

-It's the Colombian.

-Yeah.

Man on megaphone: We are

going to board the vessel.

Hi, Huey.

How you guys doing?

Huey, go get

your fishing licence.

Huey: Uh, yeah. Yeah. Thibault.

Oscar:

Fast. Now.

So, what happened to your finger?

Funny story.

You know, I stepped on

the wrong rope.

-Overboard! Lost me finger.

-(Oscar speaking Spanish)

So you were right when you said

it was dangerous out here.

Very.

Here's the license.

Fine.

(beeping)

Man: We're getting a

call about another boat.

Let's go.

Friends of yours?

I'm not an expert, but maybe

you should see a doctor

or a priest.

Vamos.

(sighing)

(sighing)

(engine starting)

Man on radio: About

Sydney, and the suspect

is in custody.

In other news,

a whale-watching boat carrying

over 600 kilos of cocaine

has been seized off

the coast of Newfoundland.

This is believed to be a part

of an ongoing investigation

-involving Interpol...

-sh*t. sh*t! sh*t!

Man on radio: As well as

the RCMP here in Canada.

Tommy: Bless me, Father,

for I have sinned.

It's... it's been two months

since my last confession.

Priest: My son,

what weighs on you?

I don't know where to start.

Um, I'm, uh...

I'm wrapped up in a terrible

thing, and... (clearing throat)

It's an unforgivable

act I can't undo.

You're a good man, Tommy.

Whatever you're wrapped up in,

it doesn't change who you are.

It does, Father.

Is James involved?

I need to tell you something.

Emma?

(laughing)

Jesus Christ, Jimmy.

Christ, boy.

Is this where you're

living now, boy?

Bit tight for the cost, boy.

(laughing)

-You wants out?

-I can't move.

I know. I know.

I know, Jimmy.

-It's going to be okay, boy.

-(Jimmy grunting)

Couple more weeks now.

Couple of weeks.

(laughing)

Jimmy, Tommy's in a bad way.

What time is it?

Gracie:

Hi.

Hi, Gracie.

Gracie: Came

home yesterday.

He sat down and just

started drinking.

Jimmy: What the hell's going on?

I ain't going to work no more.

Nobody's going

to make me, neither.

Good thing we don't got

to work today.

Would you give us two a few

minutes in, uh, private?

Yeah. Yeah.

They're going to have to put me

in one of those cocaine coffins.

That's... that's the only way

they'll get me back,

-the only way.

-Talk to me.

I just... I can't keep

up with the lies.

We got families to feed.

They're the ones

that matter, not us.

So, we keep saving the money.

We keep squirreling it away,

and when the sh*t hits the fan...

Which it f*cking will!

When the sh*t hits the fan...

We won't be there.

It's on Huey, all of it.

It's just a few more weeks.

Oh, f*ck it. Don't you...

Oh, f*ck it. Don't... f*ck.

Come on. They cut his

f*cking finger off.

I'm done, Jim.

I'll just f*cking...

I'll k*ll myself or something.

Don't you ever talk

like that again.

Ever.

Give me the f*cking g*n.

Now... you're going

to sober up.

And then you will get

your sh*t together.

Just take a drink with me, Jim.

-Come on. I can't.

-Just please take it.

Jimmy:

Anything else?

I confessed.

You con... What?

Father Williams, yesterday.

Oh, Jesus, Tommy.

Uh-huh.

(footsteps approaching)

Cup of tea, Jimmy?

Yeah. Thanks.

That'd be nice.

(rock music playing muffled)

Alright.

Uh, uh, what do I owe you?

Oh, we'll say 50 bucks.

How much for the rest of it?

I don't got any more.

Have to get another supplier.

Here. Just take that.

Uh, yeah.

Okay. Thanks.

Alphonse: Jakes,

get over here! Let's go!

I'll be

right there! Yeah!

Huey.

The f*ck's going on here?

Son of a b*tch.

Gordy:

f*cking perfect.

Huey:

Jake!

You really think

you could steal from me

and not have me

find out about it?

Huh?

Where is it? Huh?

I didn't do anything. I swear.

Oh?

-Get off me. What are you...

-(Huey laughing)

Huey: Hey! After all

I've done for you,

don't you dare lie to me, pal.

Alright. Here we go.

Huey, look. I...

I messed up, okay?

I... I'm sorry.

-Huey: Oh, that's okay.

-Jake: I'm sorry, okay?

Yeah. Me, too.

(Jake grunting)

Jimmy: Ah!

Jake! Hey! Hey!

(Huey shouting indistinctly)

Stop the boat! Stop the

boat! Man overboard!

Hey! Not another step.

-He's going to drown!

-You keep him in line,

or you're going

to his funeral next.

Alright! Alright! Alright!

Just don't... don't k*ll him!

You want I should

go back and get him?

No!

(Jake struggling)

(Jimmy grunting)

(Jake struggling)

What in hell is wrong with you?

(Jake struggling)

You're just like my dad said.

Good for nothing!

(Jake struggling)

Ah, Jimmy, come on, now.

Come on.

We both know we've had a

couple of rough weeks here.

-(Jake shouting)

-But we're so close.

We're getting there.

We're almost there.

(Jake struggling)

Why don't you take a

couple days off?

Go to the church

dance tonight, huh?

Blow off some steam.

On me.

(Jake struggling)

(unscrewing bottle cap)

-(grunting)

-(fishermen laughing)

Fisherman: How'd

you get down there?

(Jake grunting)

(tapping) Jakey!

(Jake grunting)

(fisherman speaking indistinctly)

Fisherman:

There you go.

Bless me, Father, for

I have sinned.

It's been five months or so

since my last confession.

Go on, Emma.

It's not my own sins I'm

here for, Father.

I... I feel like James is

doing wrong to himself.

Williams:

Please continue.

Emma: I feel like

he's drinking again.

Father Williams:

Like before?

Emma:

No.

But he's come so far,

and he doesn't seem like himself.

Alright. Leave

it with me.

I'll talk to him.

Thank you.

Barb will be here in

just a minute

if you need anything, alright?

She'll be downstairs,

and we won't be late.

(footsteps coming down stairs)

Thought you'd be ready to go.

If you don't want to go to

the dance, we don't have to.

I want to

go. Just...

(coughing)

It's been a long day.

I know what's going on.

I'm not stupid.

-f*ck off.

-Don't do that.

Even... even if something

was going on...

whose fault is that?

You pushed me into it.

That's not fair.

Well, what are we going to do?

We going to sell your

stupid paintings?

(forcefully) I can't just quit.

(people chattering)

Gordy: Look. You just got to

keep meeting that ship.

They're going to sink my boat.

Then get another God damn boat!

Hey, don't you ever raise your

voice above a whisper

when you're talking to me.

Remember that! I'm your boss.

Gordy: The boss of f*cking

nothing is what you are.

(people chattering)

Middleman to a middleman.

I'm the one with

the system, right?

The boys in Montreal, they only

care about my hearses, right?

My drivers, my

funeral home. So...

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

(crowd cheering, applauding)

Woman: Let's give a

hand for Natalie!

(crowd cheering, applauding)

Good to see you, Darragh.

Williams: Always

nice to see the law

mingling with the common folk.

(people chattering)

Hey, Jimmy. Back

on the sauce?

(people chattering)

Hey, Jim, look who's

talking to our priest.

Jim: He's not going

to say nothing.

Look. If he's working

with that copper,

they will throw the book at us.

He's working with that

Colombian. I'm telling you.

Oh, God. He

seen me staring.

Jimmy: Hey, you

need to stop!

Relax. Relax.

-He told him the whole story.

-Take it easy.

-He told him the whole story.

-Relax.

We are... Oh,

we're done, eh?

We're done. I'm going

to go talk to him.

You...

-Hey, Father.

-Tommy, you look well!

How's Alice?

You took a sacred oath

to Christ himself,

and you sung like a

choirboy to that copper!

-Lower your voice.

-Didn't you?

-I did no such thing.

-To that cop!

Williams: I would

never do such a thing.

-You're a liar, sir!

-Hey, Tommy!

Tommy: You talked to him!

You talked to him, and I know it!

-You admit it, Father!

-Jake: Alright. Come on.

-You admit it! I saw it!

-Alright. Alright.

Tommy.

James, good.

-(grunting)

-(crowd gasping)

Man: Hey, back off, eh?

(people shouting)

-I'll have no fighting!

-(people shouting)

-No fighting! No fighting!

-(people shouting)

-Now, why would you do that?

-It was a misunderstanding!

-He started it!

-Thanks a lot.

You'll be sleeping it off in

the drunk tank tonight.

Captain, please.

I'll take him right home.

Emma, he head-butted a priest.

Well, I don't really see

the problem with that.

(people murmuring)

Alright. Alright.

Okay.

Tommy:

Alright. Okay.

Jimmy: Yeah, yeah.

I didn't do anything.

-Oscar: Hey, Jimmy!

-(Jimmy groaning)

(Oscar speaking Spanish)

Good to see you,

though not the best

circumstances.

What's your uncle really

doing with the lobster boat?

I guess we're walking.

(seagulls calling)

Well, thanks for always

being there, eh?

No matter what,

you always got my back.

We're brothers.

You'd do the same.

I probably

wouldn't head-butt a priest.

Nah. You probably would.

(both chuckling)

What do you want, Huey?

Huey: Ah,

Jesus, Tommy.

You had a rough night.

Come on. Get in the car.

I'll give you a ride.

Is anybody here?

Anybody?

(footsteps coming up stairs)

-Jimmy?

-(Jimmy grunting)

-Jimmy.

-(grunting)

What's going on?

Why didn't you call?

No charges.

-I said my sorries.

-That's it?

-(phone ringing)

-Yeah.

We're not going to talk

about the drinking

or the fighting?

It's out of hand now, Jimmy.

-(Jimmy sighing)

-(phone ringing)

Hello?

Yeah, he's here. Why?

Hold on. I'll ask.

Did they let Tommy out, too?

Yeah, all three

of us. Why?

Alice says he never came home.

sh*t. sh*t!

I'll call you right back.

Jimmy!

It's okay.

It's... it's...

-How is it okay?

-It's... it's okay.

I promise.

Look. I'm... I'm sorry

for everything that I

said to you, okay?

Last night, I...

I didn't mean it.

Believe me.

I'm... I'm back.

All I ever wanted was

more time with you.

Look. I got to go.

I got to go. I'll be back.

Hey, I love you.

I love you.

(knocking)

Jake!

(knocking)

Wake up, Jake!

(calling)

Huey: (jovially)

Hey, Jimmy!

If you weren't so late,

you're be right on time.

Where are the boys?

You tell me.

I haven't seen them.

But I can always count

on you, though, eh, Jim? Hmm?

Jim, if you never want

to step foot on this boat again

after today,

I can accept that.

Alright, Jim?

(clearing throat) Yeah.

Good man. Alright.

Cast off!

(whispering indistinctly)

(motor turning off)

Ah, f*ck me!

I think we snagged a trap, Jimmy!

Go have a look!

Go check it out, will you?

Jimmy: Hey, Hugh,

we got nothing!

(g*n c*ck)

Why'd you do it, Jim?

Jesus, Huey.

Put that away before

you hurt yourself.

You ratted me out

at the police station

last night, didn't you?

Are you f*cking kidding me?!

Huey: Don't you

ever dare lie to me.

You are a rat

through and through.

Well, somebody ratted me out

to that Colombian cop last night.

I know for a fact it

wasn't Tommy.

I got a very idea it wasn't Jake.

So that leaves you.

Tommy's got a wife

at home crying for him.

Where is he?

Where's Jake?

I pulled you all out of the pit!

I paid you

10 lifetimes' worth of mining!

And you throw it

back all in my face?

Oh, so you k*lled them.

Oh, you k*lled them, didn't

you? You k*lled them.

Huey:

Ah...

I ain't going back to Montreal.

I'm not. Get a

b*llet in my head?

No. No. I'm not going down

for this, Jimmy.

You are a rotten, stinking,

f*cking scoundrel!

You dog! You dog!

(firing g*n)

(coughing)

Alphonse: Hey, Huey.

(speaking French)

Where are they, huh?

Look at me when I talk to you.

Huey, what have you done?

Those boys, they're harmless.

(shouting) Who knows what they

already spilled last night?

Oh, come on. They would

never say anything!

-You know that!

-Oh, you know?

It's alright. Relax.

Alphonse:

I don't have to.

I'm done.

You're not done, you idiot.

You f*cked up for the last time.

-Where's Jimmy?

-Haven't seen him.

-Don't f*cking lie to me.

-Didn't come to work.

(shouting) What's his

truck doing there, then?

What's his truck

doing there, Huey?

(softly)

You promised me.

You promised me you'd always

bring him home to me,

no matter what.

This is my fault.

I dropped him in your lap,

and you ruined us.

When you see him,

tell him he's fired.

(crying)

Woman on TV: This was the last

of three missing local men,

the other two discovered

three days ago.

The homicide

investigation continues

with few leads,

although detectives

remain hopeful.

If you have any information,

please contact the Cape Breton

regional police department.

Any information may

be given anonymously.

(knocking)

(knocking)

May I come in?

I've seen you on TV.

I'm not talking to you.

I was hoping we could

work together...

and find the man

who k*lled your husband.

Oh. Right. Is that so?

Well, I'm sure Jimmy's

uncle was involved

with a smuggler

from South America,

a dangerous man,

and I think he k*lled Thomas

MacEverett and Jacob Richards.

Huey's a mess.

He's a...

He's a crook,

but he's no m*rder*r.

I need your help.

I'm sorry. I wouldn't

even know where to start.

Emma, please?

Is that everything?

(slamming door)

Williams: I've known these three

men since we were children.

We were youthful together.

Had our whole lives

in front of us.

Then they went underground,

and I stayed above.

Nevertheless...

our lives remained...

intertwined.

They were each good men,

great men, pillars of

our community.

Jimmy: (whispering) You know, I

actually am digging for gold

down there.

Just hasn't turned up yet.

When it does, it'll be all yours.

Michael Jordans for everybody.

Jacky:

Nice shot!

And I speak for all of us

when I say they will

be greatly missed.

(chattering quietly)

-(Gordy laughing)

-Twelve strikes.

That's right. That's right.

(chattering)

(chattering)

Jackson:

I just miss him.

Hello, Captain.

How are you?

(others chattering)

Hey, champ!

How do you like them wheels, huh?

(others chatting)

You didn't need to do all that.

Huey:

Hmm?

(others chattering)

Hi, buddy.

I was thinking of going to

get some ice cream.

Sounds nice.

(others chattering)

Hey. Go have some

fun, alright?

(kissing)

As you know,

like so many in our town...

Jimmy almost lost his life.

And then he lost his job.

And... like you,

we had no prospects.

Then like a gift from God...

Jimmy got a new job for him

and his two best friends.

A job better than any of

us could have ever dreamed of.

Thanks to a man here

in this room with us today.

The job felt too good to be true.

As we tried to avoid

our husbands ending up

dead in a mine,

they ended up dead anyway,

at the hands of a man who

called himself family.

But alas.

When something seems too

good to be true,

it probably is.

Hey! (grunting)

(thudding)

(grunting)

What are you doing?

Ah! Help me!

(grunting)

Ah!

You... promised... me.

(Huey grunting)

(Huey grunting)

(Emma panting)

(grunting)

(grunting)

If you could play

on the fiddle

How's about

a British reel?

Speaking

in quotations

As a railhead town

feels the steel

Water froze

Clear as

winter ice

This is your

paradise

There ain't

no need for you

There ain't

no need for you

Go straight to

hell boy

Go straight to

hell boy

You want to

join in a chorus

Of the Amerasian blues

When it's Christmas

in h* Chi Minh

Oh Papa

say take me home

See me

got photograph

Of you and

Mama say

Oh Papa say

Take me home

Oh take me home

Straight to hell

Go straight

to hell

Go straight

to hell

Straight to hell

Can you cough it up

loud and strong?

The immigrants

want to sing

All night long

It could

be anywhere

Could be any

hemisphere

In No Man's Land

There ain't no

Asylum here

King Solomon he never

lived round here

Go straight to

hell boy

Go straight to

hell boys

Straight to hell

Straight

to hell boy

(crying)

Emma: "My darling Emma",

you are always the

strongest light in my life,

a beacon brighter

than any lighthouse.

Take this key to where

we first kissed.

"Tell no one."

Can you cough it up

loud and strong?

The immigrants want to

dance all night long

It could

be anywhere

Could be any

hemisphere

In No Man's Land

There ain't no

Asylum here

Go straight to

hell boy

Go straight to

hell boy

Straight

to hell boy

Straight to hell

Man:

Well, now,

here's a little maritime tale

I bet you never heard before.

It goes something like this.

I got an uncle Huey

He's got a boat

down in Main--Dieu

And when I lost my

job at DEVCO

He says have I

got a job for you

See I put my

faith into no one

I got no time for

the government

Since they ripped up

my house in Louisbourg

And stuck it down

on some blocks of cement

He says there's a

boat coming up from America

With caskets

filled with cocaine

There's a goldmine

out on the ocean

And a lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

There's a lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

We took his boat off the

coast of Bateston

Just out of sight

of the shore

Me and my cousin and

a Frenchman

I'd never

laid eyes on before

We met a boat that had

come up from Boston

Started heaving boxes

overboard

Huey handed them

a big bag of money

We were back in

the harbour 'round 4:00

Singing there's a

boat coming up from America

With caskets

filled with cocaine

There's a goldmine

out on the ocean

And a lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

There's a lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

We'd be met there

by seven morticians

Loaded the boxes into

their hearse

We'd set

off with $8,000

Laughing about what

we'd spend it on first

Frenchman tells me

his name is Thibault

That he grew

up in Isle Madame

We could all go down

to church hall on Saturday

And get drunker than

hell at the dance

One night Thibault

got fired up on moonshine

Tried to beat up a

Catholic priest

We got thrown out on our

a*s behind that church hall

We spent the night

with the Mounted Police

We went on working

for weeks every Sunday

Till Huey says we

got to slow it down

Someone's been singing

like a jailbird

And it brought all

the Mounties to town

They heard there's a boat

coming up from America

Heard about the caskets

filled with cocaine

There's a goldmine

out on the ocean

And a lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

There's a lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

Huey calls us all down to

the docks one night

And he hustled us

out to the sea

He shut off the engines

and the floodlights

And he pointed a

shotgun at me

I said Huey I ain't the

one been singing

Must be the Frenchman

from Isle Madame

He says that's just what a

turncoat would tell me

Least you can do is

to die like a man

Funny they could not

be bothered with a casket

But what use is it

now to complain?

There's a graveyard

out on the ocean

And a lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

And as the buckshot,

it entered my brain

I saw the lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

There's a lighthouse

in Little Lorraine

(waves lapping, seagulls calling faintly)
