Corinne Maillard is the director of the Chénoise detention center. Day to day, she tends to be overprotective of the inmates and her rather clumsy team of guards, like an smothering mother.

01x07 - Episode 7

Post by bunniefuu »

Oh, have you seen how much they've grown
since last week? It's incredible.

Oh, baby tomatoes!

Oh!

Hmm, this one's a bit sour.

You learn an awful lot about life
out here in the garden.

Patience in particular.

Some of 'em grow all twisted up
in the dark little spots.

You just gotta give 'em a little boost,

support, guide 'em so they can grow
and find their way back to the light.

It helps us connect
with some of the inmates,

and you realize
it's by spending time with them

that you manage to build
a real bond of trust,

and that feels amazing.

[computer chimes]

I don't get it. Breaking up by text,
though? That's messed up.

Well, maybe she had her reasons.
Sabryina's not your whole world, you know.

Hey, you've still got me.
I'm not going anywhere. Trust me.

Hmm, thank you.

Since Jeff took over as head guard,
I've been handing off more.

I've actually got more time
for the inmates now.

I think we've finally figured it out.

You people are freakin' nuts!

We stay locked 22 hours a day
in a ten-by-ten box

with some random dudes
we don't even know.

There's already a mattress on the floor.
Now you're bringing us another one?

Look at the size of this guy you're
dumping on us. You think there's room?

You can't say that. Come on.

-You want us to lose our minds or what?
-No.

-Where the hell's the boss?
-Right now, I'm the boss!

Forget it, the guy's on an ego trip.
Someone needs to take him down a notch.

-Don't move, JP. Don't move.
-Come here, you filthy rat!

Come here! If I catch you, you're dead!

[JP] Corinne to B-1!

[radio crackles]

I got you a shirt
for your meeting with the judge.

-[JP] Corinne to B-1!
-I'll bring it tomorrow.

[JP] Corinne to B-1!

[prisoner] Officer!

MINIMUM SECURITY

[protestors chanting]
Overcrowded prisons! Officers at risk!

Overcrowded prisons! Officers at risk!

{\an8}Overcrowded prisons...

When prisons are overcrowded,
inmates boil over.

And when they boil over, I'm sorry,
but that means more assaults on officers.

[chanting continues]

Yeah, maybe they need to stop promoting
useless guards to head guard,

just to f*ck with us with all their
little bullshit rules and schedules.

With his ugly mug and those goofy teeth
looking like Tic Tacs!

Uh, so now what we're trying to demand

is overcrowding relief
through inmate transfers...

Abolishing the head guard position
once and for all!

What?

There shouldn't be bosses
over the rest of us.

Well, either way, as long as the warden
refuses to talk to us,

we'll keep the blockade going

because we're not paid
to put our lives on the line.

-Or even to work!
-What?

-What are you...
-Like machines.

We're not paid
to f*cking work like machines!

Uh...

That's what I'm saying.

I hear you, JP, but I think
you're fighting the wrong battle.

-Look at the cameras. We're a team.
-Yes and no.

[handbrake clicks]

[Stéphanie] Thank you.

Yeah, I ran into a former inmate
after he got out, but that's it.

I didn't do anything wrong.

He served his time.
He went straight, uh...

Now he's just a regular guy.

-How's it goin', guys?
-[JP] Course, man.

-[laughs] You okay?
-[Samir] Babe!

-You forgot this.
-Yeah, thanks.

-Are you forgetting something?
-Hmm?

-[Stéphanie sighs]
-[Michel] Not bad. He handled that well.

No, it doesn't bother me at all.

I've moved on.

Between guys who've both been through it,
you don't do that. Know what I'm saying?

It's a code of honor.

Nice vibe you guys got here.
Mind if I stick around and grab a bite?

-No, help yourself.
-[Samir] Thanks, bro.

Is the punch halal?

[JP] It's got rum in it, Michel.

Does he face Mecca before he drinks it?

-[JP] All good?
-[Stéphanie] Yes.

[JP] Yeah.

Michel, knock it off.
You're gonna get drunk again.

[Michel] I'm never drunk.

-The hell are you doing here?
-I'm on strike. What do you think?

Uh, no, you're working today.

Uh, no, we're on strike.

We still need a skeleton crew.
You can't all go on strike.

Uh, and why me?

-Who says who works and who doesn't?
-[Michel] Yeah, who?

[Jeff] No. No, I'm not striking.

I don't see why I'd fight for more staff

when I think we've already got
way too many officers.

[protestors chanting]
Overcrowded prisons! Officers at risk!

Overcrowded prisons! Officers at risk!

Overcrowded prisons! Officers at risk!

[Jeff] As a matter of fact,
I could run this whole place myself.

So if anybody doesn't like my methods,
they can apply over at McDonald's.

You f*cking piece of sh*t!

Minimum staffing! [yells]

[groans]

-[indistinct chatter]
-[Michel] It's only my fourth.

Michel, I think
you've got a drinking problem.

-Oh, come on, I'm fine.
-It's not even nine yet, Michel.

Oh, cut it out!

Don't come whining to me
when the cirrhosis hits.

-Do I look like a guy with cirrhosis?
-I didn't say that.

You doing good?

[protestor] There aren't enough of us.

[indistinct chatter]

Want a bite?

No.

Their protest is a massive bust.

You tell me "blockade", I'm expecting
something to pop off, like action and...

Instead, it's just a bunch of guys
eating sausages and drinking beer.

They can keep talking,
but it won't change a thing.

It feels good spending time together
like this.

Been a while since we talked.

-Hmm?
-Hmm.

[handbrake clicks]

[distant chatter]

What's going on over there?

No, no, no, no, no.

What the hell's going on here?

Corinne, Corinne!
That court trip is not happening today.

That's not possible, Serge.

He's got a hearing with the judge for
early release. He could be out tomorrow.

Don't get your hopes up.
This could go on for a while.

If the warden won't speak with us,
we're not moving.

Come with me.
Let's go talk to him right now.

-Right now?
-Obviously right now.

Uh, um...

But I just threw the ribeye on.

[sighs, tuts] Sorry, Corinne,
he's got to come to us.

-You're not helping, Serge.
-Hey, hey, hey. Life is no picnic.

[background chatter]

[door unlocking]

Yard time.

[prisoner sighs]

[claps hands] Come on,
get your a*s in gear, brother.

Yard time's started.

Sorry, I'm on my own. They're driving me
nuts with this bullshit strike.

[prisoner] Whatever.

Open up!

-No, there's an inmate in shorts.
-[prisoner] This is ridiculous.

Can you blame him?
They're dying in this heat.

Outside his cell, an inmate is required
to wear proper, appropriate attire.

In this prison, shorts are only allowed
during physical activity.

This isn't gym time right now, is it? No.

That means no shorts allowed.

Are you serious right now? Nobody enforces
that rule. Just open the door.

My prison, my rules.
Nobody goes out until he gets changed.

-He's such a f*cking jerk!
-Go get changed, man.

No, no, no. We've had enough of this.
We're not dogs. Nobody's changing.

-Open the door. We're not going anywhere.
-Well, then, happy yard time.

[angry background chatter]

[prisoner] What hell's he doing?

What the f*ck? With your bullshit strike,
we've got no visiting hours.

No gym, no activities anymore.

All we've got left is yard time
and now you've taken that away?

Hold up, guys. I'm on your side here.

Oh, yeah? You're serious?

He's right.
Yo, this is f*cking bullshit.

We've got four guys to a cell,
rats, f*cking bedbugs.

[angry shouting]

Hey, guys, guys.
You're with me. You're with me.

This pisses me off too,
but I'm here for you guys, all right?

We're not gonna let this happen.
Besides, the strike was his idea!

[angry shouting]

No, it's not that.
Sometimes you're just not in the mood.

That's all there is to it.

Besides, when I get home from work,
I'm exhausted. I'm...

Yeah, I get it, I get all that.

It's just that sometimes I wish you'd come
to me a little more. That's all.

And every time I bring it up,
it feels just...

-Oh...
-It annoys you.

We can't even talk about it.

What the hell are you staring at? Did
I miss something? What's your problem?

Yeah, he did time, so what?
Isn't he out? Got something to say?

Are we good?
Worry about your sausage, man.

They're gonna be up my a*s all day.

Yeah. Back then, he was a bad boy.

I ain't working yet, but I ain't
sitting around either. I do the chores.

I make your meals. I clean up the house.

He's offering to meet you halfway
in the main yard.

No, we're not moving from here.

I drive you to work.
I pick you up from work.

You didn't even notice
I got a little haircut.

Or maybe we do this
over video or something?

Yo, hello?
Get your damn a*s down here now!

Or we're done burning pallets
and that brand-new Range Rover's next!

You got that? You got that?!

All right.

Yeah, okay.

No need to scream. I can hear you.

Oh, perfect.

Okay, let's do that, then.
See you in a minute.

-Look at that. He's headed over.
-It's about time.

You've just got to ask nicely. That's all.

Come on, this ain't funny anymore.
Open up already!

Oh, Mr. Warden, perfect timing.

The door. The door, the door!

Right away. Right away, Mr. Warden.

[door buzzes]

Warden, he won't let us out
'cause there's an inmate in shorts.

-Yeah, good job, good job.
-[prisoner] Hey, Warden!

[angry shouting]

Wait, wait, wait!

It's urgent. There's an emergency.

Hold on, you've got it all wrong,
Warden. Hey!

[prisoners shouting]

-Have a nice day, Mr. Warden.
-[prisoner 1] What about rec time?

[prisoner 2]
All this over this schmuck in shorts?

[protestors chanting]

It's important that we talk.
It's important that we...

I'm gonna f*ck this guy up.
I'm gonna f*ck him up.

Let me handle this one.
You've got plenty of qualities, Stéphanie.

But diplomacy isn't your strong suit.

-Yeah, I'll give that to you.
-Go on, I got this. Sit back down.

[protestors chanting]

Yeah.

Like I was saying, communication matters.
You can open up to me, Stéphanie.

All right, that's it, back to your cells.
Yard time's over.

Nah, no way. We ain't going back.

Sorry?

Hold on, they're suffocating in there.

You can't have people
living on top of each other like that.

-We want the lockdown lifted now.
-Yeah, that's right.

Yo, as long as the strike's on,
we ain't going back.

-Yeah!
-Wait, what else do we got?

-What else?
-You mentioned something else earlier.

Oh, yeah,
we want the head guard transferred.

-That's it.
-[prisoner] Right.

That's it. That's what I'm talking about.

[chanting] Overcrowded prisons,
inmates are at risk!

Overcrowded prisons, inmates are at risk!

[all] Overcrowded prisons,
inmates are at risk!

Overcrowded prisons, inmates are at risk!

Overcrowded prisons, inmates are at risk!

-Say what?
-Overcrowded prisons, inmates are at risk!

-That's right.
-Overcrowded prisons, inmates are at risk!

What?

I'm not the one making those decisions.
That comes from Regional.

You're still taking inmates in
by the truckload.

Yeah, but it's not like I enjoy it.

You know what one inmate costs me a day?

Come on now.
How much are they bringing in?

Because more inmates means more funding,
but so far, we haven't seen a dime.

-Oh yeah?
-Not in staffing, not in facilities.

Oh, really now? This has got to be a joke.

What about those...
those plants over there

we put in the cell block for decoration?

You know what those cost me? [scoffs]

Probably a lot less
than that big gas guzzler.

-[warden] That?
-Yeah.

No, not at all. First off, it's a hybrid.

Second, it's a lease, so that's personal.

[chuckles] This thing barely uses any gas.

On top of that, my brother-in-law owns
the dealership. Got a great deal on it.

-[engine starts]
-[scoffs]

What the hell is he doing?

[engine revs]

He's leaving already?

I can tell you, we're not going anywhere.

I've had it up to here!

Give me a break already!

[indistinct background chatter]

[JP] They've got no idea
what it's like out in the projects.

-JP?
-They're sitting at home.

-They don't know our reality.
-JP! JP, can I speak with you?

Go on, speak.

I mean, in private.

I've got nothing to hide.
Say what you gotta say.

-[prisoner] Go ahead.
-Sure.

Uh, just so you know,
ERIS is about to move in,

so if you wanna get out, now's the time,

because after that,
it's gonna get complicated.

Yeah? Let 'em come. Don't worry,
we'll give 'em a proper welcome.

Why not send 'em in right now?
Do it. Let's do this!

I can't wait to see that.

m*therf*cker! Get your a*s over here
yourself! Come on, you f*ck!

-Get in here!
-Put your money where your mouth is!

-Bring 'em on!
-Little baby!

[door buzzes]

Traitor!

f*ck off! Get out!

-Get lost, you f*cking traitor!
-Look at him!

-Yeah, right.
-Yeah, should've known.

-Gotta be kidding me.
-f*cking traitor!

-I knew it. f*ck off!
-Beat it!

We don't want lowlifes like you in here!

What you're doing for the cause
is great, Corinne.

Oh, it's only right.

Ah, thank you, Corinne.
This isn't some sulfite-free crap, is it?

-About getting that inmate out for court?
-Yeah, we'll let him pass.

Don't worry, boss.

-No, hold up. There's still one more.
-[Serge] Thanks.

Nelson Mandela said it best.

"An army marches on its stomach."

[interviewer] Uh, pretty sure
that was Napoleon, actually.

Oh, no way. Oh, let me try it over.

Napoleon said it best.
"An army marches on its stomach."

[vehicle approaching]

[radio beeps]

[officer] Control,
Tactical Team arriving on site now.

I repeat, Tactical is on scene
and awaiting instructions.

What happened? What's this about?

Got inmates in the hall
refusing to go back to their block.

Get this junk out of my way!

No, it's a blockade. Nobody goes through.

-What are you doing? Let them in now!
-No, we're not moving from here!

Can somebody explain to the lady we're
trying to keep her co-workers safe?

Can somebody explain to Mr. Commando

that beyond the prison walls,
he don't run sh*t?

We are not gonna put our people at risk
to protest the fact that we're at risk.

-That's self-defeating.
-Let's calm down.

We're talking inmates in the hall,
not some hostage situation.

Let's settle down.

Once the warden hears the riot squad's
jammed up outside the prison walls

while there's a full-blown insurgency
going on,

he'll come running back to hear us out.

-You've got a point.
-Yeah, no, she's not wrong.

-[protestors mutter]
-[Michel] I've had worse hangovers.

Oh, thank you, sir. That's wonderful.
Thank you so much.

Yes, of course, we'll be logged in
for the hearing on time, sir.

Thank you again. Thank you. See you soon.

[panting]

I told you, when Corinne's not around,
I'm the chief.

In your dreams, you're the chief!

Knock it off! What's going on?

-He started a damn riot.
-What's he talking about? It was him.

-He kept the inmates in over some shorts!
-All this over a pair of shorts?

-I'm not the one who made the rules.
-Come on, nobody even follows that rule.

Excuse me, but where did your humanity go
and your empathy?

Boss, we gotta put ourselves
in their shoes.

Exactly. Good thing
we've still got officers like JP.

We're talking about human beings here.
They're people, not cattle.

Hmm.

[tuts] That promotion must have gone
straight to his head.

All right, I talked the judge
into doing it over video.

We're talking possible parole.

If you keep one of your own locked up

when he could get out of here,
that wouldn't be very nice.

Hey, man, I swear,
I don't give a flying f*ck.

Nobody goes in, nobody goes out.

[Corinne sighs]

Which inmate?

Uh, cell... cell 314.

His name?

-Hmm?
-What's his name?

-Maillard.
-Ah!

-[mocking laughter]
-Yeah, of course, right.

[laughs] Figures!

Well, if you really want him out, boss,

you're gonna have to at least put AC
in the cells first, huh?

Then again, if he ends up getting parole,
that's one less inmate for you guys, hmm?

-It would be a win if you ask me.
-Now, listen, boss.

We're willing to do you this favor,
but you've got to do us one too.

Great, then tell me, what do you want?

-Individual cells.
-Phones in the cells.

-Air conditioning.
-We just want some popsicles.

-Wi-Fi.
-And eat your p*ssy.

[laughter]

If you don't mind me saying,
Corinne, uh...

earlier, they were asking to get rid
of the head guard position too.

I swear to God.

[sighs deeply] We're not getting anywhere.

Go pick a spokesman
and I'll sit down with him.

Right off the bat,
I can tell you fans and AC are out.

We'd have to order 'em. That'll take
too long. We need something quick here.

Hold on, boss, come on, I'm happy
to negotiate, but let's do this right now.

First off, when I got somebody over,

I don't know, maybe I'd offer them
a drink, you know?

Uh, yeah, of course.
You want something to drink?

I'd k*ll for a citrus Schweppes.

I'm not sure if we have any.

You've got no authority
to tell us to clear out.

We're standing outside the prison.
This is public property, okay?

We're stuck outside Chenoise Prison
because of some protestors.

Gonna need you to send a SWAT team
to get rid of 'em.

Yeah, yeah, one team ought to do it, yeah.

-Maybe we should head out now, huh?
-No, we're not going anywhere!

The thing is,
I just came for the barbecue.

-I'm not getting my a*s kicked over this.
-You've got to be kidding me!

[indistinct chatter]

Well, I swear to God,
I'm not moving from here!

So where's the ribeye at?

Look, I even got you your ribeye.

The door, please!

Uh... no.

What do you mean, "no"?
Open this g*dd*mn door!

No.

This is the last time I'm saying it.
You open this door!

It's too risky, boss. You're a high-value
target. They could take you hostage.

Really? You think so?

I'm afraid so.

Then who's gonna go get Jonathan?

I think we ought to send someone
lower down the chain first.

Then why don't you go?

-Me?
-Yes.

Well, I'd love to, boss,

but I mean, uh,
like you very rightly pointed out,

someone who knows these guys well
and who has empathy should go.

Someone who's like 'em.

-But, uh...
-Yeah, someone like that.

-Right, like, uh...
-Hmm...

[Corinne] Who?

[door buzzes]

-What the f*ck are you doing here?
-Yeah, right. f*cking traitor!

-You gotta be kidding me.
-It's ridiculous.

It's freakin' ridiculous.
Don't you hear us?

f*ck off!

-This is ridiculous.
-He's such a f*cking jerk!

Salaam, my brothers.

Symbolically, it mattered
that I be the one to go,

because the truth is...

I was at the heart of this movement,
straight up.

[door closes]

[door buzzes, opens]

Keep the movement alive, bros.

-f*ck yourself!
-f*ck off!

[prisoner] Such a f*cking jerk!

-Thank you, officer.
-[prisoner] This is ridiculous.

[sighs with disgust]

I'm sure she's lying with
that whole volunteering in Africa story.

I'm not sure why,
but something tells me it's all made up.

Come on, why would you say that?

Her story sounds believable.

And your Sabryina seemed like someone
who really cared about people. I mean...

Oh!

What is it?

You look perfect.
You look really elegant.

So, now, do it like we practiced.
It'll be fine, okay?

-Yeah, yeah.
-No, this is important. Look at me.

-Come on!
-Can we just call her real quick?

But... But I don't have her number.

Okay, listen, here's the plan.

You'll talk to the judge,
and when you get out,

you and me will find Sabryina together,
okay?

If we have to go to Africa,
we'll go to Africa.

-[chuckles]
-You mean it?

Of course. We'll go to Club Med.
Okay? Just you and me.

Our feet in the water,
a beach chair, a mojito.

I'm your mom.
I'll never let you down, no matter what.

Thank you.

[sighs] Hmm.

SABRYINA94
YOU HAVE 3 NEW NOTIFICATIONS

Come on, get off of me already,
with that dumbass hood!

You wear that thing
'cause you're butt-ugly! Ugly a*s!

Wanna head home?
We'll have more peace and quiet there.

Yeah, but the whole riot thing going on
inside, maybe I should go help the others.

Maybe they're in trouble or something?
You know what I'm sayin'?

But don't worry, we'll keep in touch.
We'll talk later on, you know?

I'll give you a call. See ya.

[tuts] Rules apply to guards too,
so put your polo back on. Be a good boy.

Anyone there?

Yo! Are you deaf?

They should never give guys like you
any kind of power.

-[scoffs] Guys like me?
-[JP] Yeah.

-You mean white people?
-No, ugly ones.

What happened? People tease you
too much as a kid or what?

You should've seen a dentist
instead of being a dickhead.

You're jealous
because you wanna be senior officer,

but you're never gonna be senior officer.

-Senior officer?
-Yeah.

Your job's opening and closing
g*dd*mn doors!

Yeah, maybe,
but you're as ugly as I am, though.

Mr. Key Boy!

Yeah, maybe I am, but my keys
are what keeps society from collapsing.

You drag the uniform through the dirt
while I wear it with pride.

You're a disgrace. Stop! f*ck!

-[grunts]
-I'm f*cking filing a report!

You're out of your mind!

You should be locked up
with the crazies over there!

-Me? Me?
-Yeah! Yeah!

You know who I am, man?
I'm the senior officer in this prison!

-I swear I'm not taking it anymore!
-[door buzzes]

-Let go of me!
-I'm not taking it anymore! Wallahi!

[indistinct chatter]

I hope they piss all over you.

Wait! I'll write you a nice report!

Go write up your grandma, I don't give
a f*ck! I don't give a f*ck anymore!

Hey!

Come on, move.

[Stéphanie] You only act hard
'cause there's a whole bunch of you.

Bet you got tiny dicks
under those uniforms!

No! Let us do our jobs.
You got no business here.

I'm an officer here, actually.

Hey, stop him, he's gone nuts!
He's gone nuts!

[JP] I'm gonna get him! [grunts]

I'm gonna k*ll him! I'm gonna...

[groans, grunts]

-Take him down!
-Get lost! I'm on your side!

I'm on your side, guys! I'm on your side!

-No, he's not. Take him down!
-I'm on your side. Stop this!

[ERIS officer] Stay down! Don't move!

Oh wow, JP's a little gangsta after all!
[chuckles]

Hmm.

Do you have to make that much noise?
A hearing's about to start in there!

The director's here.
She brought in the riot squad.

Yeah, guys, what the f*ck
are you guys doing here? What's wrong?

[officer] Everybody calm down.

Stop there, turn around,
get back in your cells now.

Hey, just go f*ck yourself, Batman!

[angry muttering]

Boss, boss, boss, over here.
Boss, over here.

-There's the m*therf*cker!
-[Corinne] No, no, no.

[shouting]

Stop! Stop it!

[prisoner] Here you go!

Have you people lost it?

What has gotten into you?
Have you all gone completely crazy?

We spend our lives
trying to build something here with you.

And all you guys ever do
is break everything!

You're breaking our ba*ls!

[breathes heavily]

If you want to ruin your life,
don't ruin everyone else's.

You might wanna give up,

but in there, there's a guy
fighting to get back on his feet

and he's not giving up.

He believes in rehabilitation
and that's how he'll make it.

And who knows, maybe tomorrow he'll be out
with a delivery driver contract in hand!

Because he has his driver's license!
