Corinne Maillard is the director of the Chénoise detention center. Day to day, she tends to be overprotective of the inmates and her rather clumsy team of guards, like an smothering mother.

01x01 - Episode 1

Go ahead whenever you're ready.

My name is Corinne Maillard,

detention director
at Chenoise Correctional Facility,

and I oversee the inmates' daily lives.

[indistinct chatter]

[Corinne]That doesn't stop me
from looking at their futures.

At the end of the day,
that's what I try to do.

I try to plant little seeds of hope.

Nothing grows overnight, except...

except a world of trouble.

Oh, we've got some beautiful squash here,
some leeks over there and...

And look at that.
Two big, beautiful cabbages!

And that, I have no idea what that is.

[grunts softly]

Is that cannabis?

-I'll let the warden know.
-What? No, no, no.

We don't need to bother him with that.

To me, prison is all about rehabilitation.

We're responsible for the inmates
and it's our job

to help them return to society.

[sighs] That's a shame.
It smells incredible.

-[coughs]
-Hmm.

Oh, I love that smell.

To me, the whole mission of prison
can be summed up in two words.

Love and encouragement.

-And supervision.
-[door buzzes]

[prisoner] Officer!

MINIMUM SECURITY

What's up, everybody?
Today, c*ck tutorial.

You'll see, it's super easy.
We're making a Sex On The Beach.

First, a shot of vodka. There we go.

Peach schnapps.
Orange juice, cranberry juice.

Give it a good stir like this.

[sighs softly] Now, that's nice.
Damn, we've got it good here.

[stops video]

Hmm. It's not from here.

-[taps keyboard] Hmm?
-The best c*ck in B1 at Chenoise.

Cheers, y'all.

Well, yeah.
Maybe it's just meant to mislead us.

That'd be pretty smart.

If he was so smart,
he would have hidden his face.

Now, find out who it is, okay?

Make an example out of him.
We don't need this publicity.

We're already short-staffed
since our last intern got assaulted.

Quiet! You're gonna scare the new one.

Nah, don't even worry about me.
The only person who scares me is me.

Oh, she's got grit.
I hope this one sticks around.

[indistinct chatter]

[coffee machine whirs]

-You doin' good?
-Yeah.

Is this your first day?

-Hmm.
-[officer] Yeah.

You'll see. It can seem pretty
intimidating at first, but don't worry.

With me, you're in good hands.

Yeah, having women working here is great.

Especially when 74% of people
end up meeting their partner at work.

[indistinct chatter]

No, women are great.
They've got tact, empathy and patience.

That's all super,
but in a fight, who needs that?

We're still the public's last line
of defense against anarchy and chaos.

You better be shredded!

[indistinct chatter]

Right now, I'm a senior correctional
officer, but I'll make lieutenant soon.

Hmm.

Either way, I'll still be your supervisor.

[officer coughs]

[intern] Hmm.

-c*ck tutorial.
-So... who's that?

It's super easy.
We're making a Sex On The Beach.

-It's hard to tell from that.
-No! Look, that's Charkaoui, boss.

[sighs] That guy's Mr. Snitch.

-Says who?
-[Corinne] First name?

Salem. He's been pulling
all kinds of crap.

Bring him in
for a disciplinary hearing.

Let's make an example of him. I'll show
you how to get an inmate back on track.

Hmm.

New dessert tutorial. We're making
a McFlurry. Prison edition, my friends.

Failure to comply, damaging property,
drug possession.

What are you trying to prove?
You wanna spend your time in solitary?

-What's the plan, man?
-Come on now. Take it easy, Stéphanie.

Look at this. It's actually really good.

[Salem] Add some melted ice cream.

What I see is a young man
sabotaging his own potential

because he's afraid of success.

Isn't that right? There it is.

No, this is impressive.

You did this all yourself,
the editing too?

-[Salem] Yeah.
-Hats off, I'm impressed.

-How many likes did that get?
-Hey, that's not why we're here.

A phone in your cell gets you

And personally, for that stunt,
I'd add another five. Real talk.

Whoa, will you please wait a minute?

I'm not gonna punish him
over a few recipes and a little dancing.

Fine, boss, do what you want.
I know how they are.

You gotta be tough with these guys.
Give them an inch, they'll take a mile.

You're fresh out of the academy.
You wanna do things right.

But nobody's ever helped anyone
by punishing them. Trust me.

[inhales deeply]
So you get a pass this time.

-But knock off the nonsense, okay? Got it?
-[Salem] Yeah.

-Okay, good day, Mr. Charkaoui.
-Thank you.

I don't get it. Weren't you gonna make
an example of him?

Yeah, an example of rehabilitation.

Don't worry, I've got my own method.

-Hmm.
-Yeah. Trust me.

This is the stuff
the academy can't teach you.

[Stéphanie] Okay.

Yeah, my father was a correctional officer
and my grandfather was one as well,

so I guess you could definitely say
prison work runs in the family.

Uh, it's in our blood in a way.

It definitely is, absolutely.

Oh, and that's my son Jonathan
when he was 12.

He wanted to go pro.
Then again, he was so bad at school.

Oh, terrible. Just awful.
Yeah, he completely dropped out.

And I haven't really heard from him
in about a year now.
