Whether it's slick sleight
of hand or enchanting illusions,

we showcase all kinds of
magic because we never know

what will fool
the stars of our show.

But one thing we do know
is that it won't be easy.

Now let the games begin
as we bring out

two of the greatest minds
in magic, Penn and Teller.

If Penn and Teller
can't figure out a trick,

they declare that
magician to be a fooler

and give them the prestigious
and shiny "Fool Us" trophy.

Our first winner might be
this magician right here.

- I'm Ben Jackson and
I'm from Houston, Texas.

I majored in biomedical sciences

with a chemistry minor
and a business minor.

So when I graduated, I
naturally became a magician.

I traded
medical school for magic.

I've made a specialty
of using magic

to reach people in
unexpected ways.

When the Houston Museum
of Natural Science

asked me to be
their spokesperson,

I created some magical
content to boost attendance.

I turned ancient papyrus
into $100 bills,

produced a dinosaur bone
from nowhere,

and made priceless
diamonds magically appear.

Missed one.

Penn, Teller, I've created
this one just for you.

Team, before we get started,
I want you to know

that in high school, I was
president of Latin Club.

Which means I was also voted

most likely
to become a magician.

Right, Teller?
Yeah, Carpe Diem, brother.

Tempest Fugit, girlfriend.

And you see Teller
taught high school Latin

and Greek for six years.

Which means he's familiar
with the story

of Theseus from Greek mythology.

A man who entered into a
labyrinth to slay the Minotaur.

In order to navigate the
twists and turns of the maze,

he used one of these.

A clew.

C-L-E-W.

An antiquated term
for a ball of yarn.

Ingeniously, he tied one
end to the entrance.

He unraveled it as
he strolled through,

and then he simply followed
the yarn back to the beginning

to make sure he never got lost.

And that's the origin story
of the word clue,

C-L-U-E, as we know it today.

Because a clue is a guide
to help solve a mystery.

Classic story deserves
a classic piece of magic.

So we'll use a length of yarn,

a knitting needle,
and that borrowed ring.

Sir, now's that time.

Very good.

Here's the beauty in this.

There's no big boxes, no
laser lights, no flashy props.

Just a ring, a yarn,
and some help.

Brooke, please hold on
to the ends, please.

Very good.

The only way
that the ring gets off the yarn

is through the ends.

Unless you find the sweet spot,

I know.
It's a lot to take in.

So we're going to do it

and they weave

their tangled web of deception.

And it's up to Penn
and Teller to watch intently

and to decipher in real time
as to what they're looking at

if it's a genuine clue or
if it's just misdirection.

Those aren't the clues
I'm looking for.

It's neither those.
Toss them, team. Toss them.

Yeah, go crazy.
We're having a party.

And like Theseus, we have to

Both magic and mythology
produce a powerful effect,

even though it's just pretend,

because we can't help but knit
ourselves into the narrative.

We envision slaying the
monsters of our own lives,

navigating through
impossible conditions,

and wielding the elements
at our fingertips.

We all want to know
how the story ends,

especially this man.

It lies in the moments

particular life lesson?

Did magic teach you something
significant in your life?

- I think magic has taught me
to be so thankful.

My mom has been cleaning
teeth for 30 years.

And I remember one day I called
my mom on the phone and said,

"Mom, I'm getting
ready for a gig.

"I'm not feeling really
great about it.

I didn't really want to go."

I was kind of down in the dumps.

She said, "You want to
go to your magic show?

"Your magic show where people
clap and they just applaud.

"And they go, ooh, and over
your magic tricks.

"And you're not feeling great
about that?

Well, boo-hoo, right?"

And so, you know, she said,
"Ben, you know how people clap

"and applaud for me after
I clean their teeth?

"None. Nobody.
No one does this.

"So be thankful.

Be thankful that you get
to bring joy to people."

- That's sweet.
- Yeah.

Let's see if Penn and Teller

have a clue as to how
you worked your magic.

- Fair enough.

- Boys?

- Hey, Ben, that
was really nice.

You put together really,
really different stuff.

I mean, the ring in the ball
of wool is a Victorian trick.

- Yes.
- It's in all the magic books.

We were all ready for
that from the moment

you came out with
the ball of yarn.

We said, well, that's
where the needle is going.

But we didn't anticipate
was the jar being in there.

And that was a really,
really nice idea.

And all that string stuff does
not go back to Victorian times.

There's a lot of new stuff
you invented there.

So by giving a history of it,

I'm trying not
to take away from you.

You set the whole thing up with
Teller being a Latin teacher.

And I was needling Teller

to try to give
the explanation in Latin.

And unfortunately,
some of the words

we want to use
were not around then.

But Teller did write one thing
in Latin

that I think might
give you a hint.

You want to show him that?

These are two
Latin scholars conversing.

- It's been a while.

- I think what it means is
that you didn't fool us.

Does that make sense?

- You know what?

They're the smartest guys
in the room for a reason.

So I've got to hand it to them.

emotions in your performance?

- The emotion in magic
is everything.

The trick doesn't matter at all

because the magic doesn't
happen in your hand,

happen in your heart.

It's about touching
this part of your soul

and making you happy just
for a few minutes.

So ingenious.

You know, boy, the Spaniards
and their card tricks.

Wow.

All of yous.
All of yous are just fabulous.

But I got to tell you,
with card tricks,

it's usually personality
and intellectual.

What you rarely get
with card tricks

is a real visual,
visceral illusion.

You don't usually get
pure illusions in card tricks.

And you really brought that
in just a gorgeous way.

It's just one of the most
beautiful mind-blowing acts.

And the fact that
it's cards doesn't even matter.

It's a beautiful visual
thing that we just see there.

And just a whole different
way to see card tricks.

And so ingenious.

I mean, completely creative.

And I don't want to force myself
to give code words and so on.

- You can go on.

- He'll give them to us.

- I just keep saying
great, great, great.

And we happen to
know how you did it.

And that actually makes
it much more ingenious.

It's a brilliant use
of everything you use.

And we loved it.

You blew our minds,
but you didn't fool us.

- You brought us so much joy,

in your cranium.

I've invented a magical solution
for this kind of mental block.

I'll demonstrate with a few
names I found on the internet.

people known by one name.

You know, like Aristotle,
Adele, or Banksy,

Beethoven, Picasso,
Elvis, Teller.

And Brooke can
choose her favorite.

What's your favorite
thing about magic?

- Well, I think it's
about the complexity.

The complexity, I think,
is such fascinating to you,

to work with the audience, to
have that communication thing,

and at the same time,
I'm hiding something.

So it's almost
like schizophrenic,

but, of course, you want
to reach your audience

on an emotional level.

You know, it should
be fun as well.

You know, when I'm working
a drill on your head,

so that's not too intellectual.

- All right, Harry, let's see

how you pulled that name
right out of my head.

- Yes.
- Are we ready?

Boy, we love you.

That last thing you did
just absolutely fried us.

We love the way you think.

Your magic doesn't look
like anything else,

and a lot of times in magic,

you're trying to get things that
are justified and make sense,

and you do stuff that is not
justified and doesn't make sense

and makes it surreal
and wonderful.

And although it wasn't supposed
to be the fooler in this trick,

the drill into the head
with the sawdust

or the, I guess,
brain matter blowing through

was just so funny
and so terrific.

It just looked great
all the way through.

And we also love the way
you put stuff together.

You just lay your stuff.

You just go through
an advanced magic book,

go through the index,
and you'd find, you know,

there's mentalism,
there's prop magic,

there's prediction, there's
the block and tube trick.

It's all stuff we're familiar
with, all stuff we see there,

but put together beautifully.

And last time, you fooled us,

and this time,
we don't think you did,

but boy, we loved it,

and boy, we loved you drilling
through Brooke's head,

working up new methods

something magical

using every element of the spoon

because the spoon has
these shapes and these gleams

and this look that is so magical

and you're the first one
to have discovered that.

And because we're friends,

there's also this
cat and mouse game going

where you know what we know
and we know that you know

that you know this
and we know this.

- And we know none of it.

- Also you come to see
our show, come backstage,

then you show us stuff
and talk to us about stuff

which does not help you.

It helps you in the friendship.

I'm not going to
