02x10 - And the Heart of a Librarian

Post by bunniefuu »

[music]

- [horses neighs]
- To the side, young lady.

Not 'till I get my coin.

- I already paid you.
- You paid me half penny

to watch the boxes.

I charge whole.

Very well.

[chuckles]

What you got in here anyway?
They come from far away.

[indistinct whisper]

Farther than you can
possibly imagine.

[ominous music plays]

What is that?

It's the future.

And it's coming for us all.

[music]

Goodness.

[explosions]

[horse neighs]

Lady Anya, what is it?

I'm not sure, Mary.

But I think it might be magic.

[music]

CHARLIE CORNWALL:
Vikram, where are you?

CONNOR GREEN:
Yo, Vik, where you at?

Yes, yes, I know.

I am preparing
for the meandering,

brain-atrophying busy work
known as Inventory Day!

Now, I have hardened myself
for the ensuing boredom.

Uh-hmm.
But take some comfort

in the fact that we are laboring
over minutia,

and it shall benefit us
all in the end.

Aha.

You do not seem to be girding
yourself for Inventory Day.

Oh. We moved it to tomorrow.

You didn't get the notification?
-

The what?

It should have pinged
your phone.

Ugh, that infernal device.

It pings constantly.

As if its sole purpose
is to distract people

from doing actual pursuits.

- [phone rings]
- Oh, look,

Lysa sent me a video of a cat.

- [car meows]
- Where is Lysa?

That's why we moved
Inventory Day.

A tech friend of hers
is in town,

specializes
in satellite tracking.

She and Mrs. Astolat are
meeting them to see

if they can calibrate our tech
to help find Merlin.

So, I'm going to the movies
with some friends.

And I'm going for coffee with
one of my krav maga classmates.

Ooh, is this coffee or coffee?

- It's coffee, but--
- Uh-hmm.

--I'm pretty sure
he thinks it's coffee.

Am I to understand

that the both of you are
socializing with civilians?

Vik, we're allowed to have
lives, and so are you.

You know, I can set you up
in the apps, if you like.

Really?

No. No, absolutely not.

Being a librarian
is a pivotal role,

and necessarily a lonely one.

Vik, I love working
for the library,

but life is about connection.

And not to point
out the obvious,

but Lysa wouldn't exist

if you and Anya didn't have
a connection.

[chuckles] And did that story
have a happy ending?

Did Lysa's, with her
superbly heroic friend?

No! Now, we can enjoy
social niceties,

and skiv off our duties
like Inventory Day,

but to have truly human
connection...

[tongue clicking]
that is a fool's errand.

- [enchanted music]
- [book clatters]

Oh.

What is it?

It's a copy of Jane Eyre.

Yes.

But it also is--

was hers.

Hers?

Anya's?

- Is that Anya's book?
- Uh-hmm.

I gave it to her
when she first saw...

me.

Hey. Is that a letter?

- What does it say?
- Connor, it's rude.

Normally,
I would agree with Charlie,

but I think
you should hear this.

"My dear Vikram,

it has been 10 years
since I last saw you

through a painting
into the future.

Our son is in France."

ANYA BESSON: My parents
attending to his education,

while I have been called
to London

for a frivolous Garden Party
to celebrate the upcoming birth

of yet another prince
or princess by the Queen.

I have missed you every day.

But it was only today

when I saw something
I could not explain,

something that felt
like the magic you were charged

in seeking
that I have put pen to paper.

I know you will never read this.

I know these words
are little more

than a way to organize
my own thoughts.

But I can't help
but wishing you were here,

as I am overcome
with this feeling

that this man and the magic
in his possession

will bring nothing but horrors.

And something must be done
to stop him.

All my love, Anya.

[bell rings]

- Yes, my lady?
- My hat, Mary. I'm going out.

"All my love, Anya."

It's her handwriting.

I would know it anywhere.

CHARLIE: It's amazing.

You know, that letter
was sitting in that book

on that shelf all this time.

Maybe not.

Look.

Metallic, slightly sour.

This is Iron Gall ink.

Widely used
in the Victorian era,

but it fades to brown over time.

This is still black.
It's barely dry.

You're not saying that
Anya wrote that letter recently?

Only one way to find out.

[music]

Now what?

Now, we wait.

[door opens]

[panting]

[chuckles]

[music]

- Another letter?
- Oh, my God.

Is it a portal? A bridge?

I do not know.

But this book has allowed
Anya and I

to reach out across time.

A copy of a Victorian
romance novel is acting

as a portal for letters
between Anya and Vikram.

- But how?
- Lysa's not answering.

She knows better. I'll try her.

Okay, okay. Ideas, ideas.

Okay. Anya said in her letter

she encountered
something magical.

Could that be doing this?

Maybe.
What about the book itself?

You said you got it for her.
Where'd you get it from?

Uh, maybe
the shop you purchased?

Not from a shop.

From here.

From the library.

[music]

- [doors open]
- Mrs. Astolat!

I need everything we have
on the Sword of Mars.

I believe its location is near!

Near what?

What exactly is
the Sword of Mars?

Anya!

I mean, my lady.

My Lady Anya.

What are you doing down here?

I think the better question
is what is this doing down here?

This is my family's castle.

I have spent many summers here
exploring every corner,

and I do not recall
a room such as this,

especially one
with such treasures.

Well, I am a librarian,

as you know,
working for your fiance, Gregor.

He told me to find a place
for my books, and here it is.

Now I have a lot of work to do--

Yes, my fiance--no, I didn't--

I didn't take him
as much of a reader.

But I've only known him
of a fortnight.

What do you think of him,
in that time?

I know very little.

But the little I do know
makes me wish I knew less.

I'm sorry.

- If I could help--
- Thank you.

You cannot.

- May I ask a favor of you.
- Anything.

I am at your service.

A book.

I have read through
all of mine at least twice.

And this is a library,
is it not?

May I borrow one?

Of course.

Name it.

What if you do not have a copy?

I will have a copy.

Of any book?

- Ever?
- Try me.

My friend recommended a tale.

Jane Eyre?

[music]

- Jane Eyre.
- [scoffs]

A novel by Currer Bell.

A pseudonym,
if I ever heard one.

You really have a copy.

I am a very good librarian.

Tell me. What is it about?

It is about a woman
who leaves everything.

And finds herself
falling in love with a man

with many secrets.

I've wanted to read it for ages.

Keep it.

It's yours.

[music]

One small point.

My friend, you see,
is the publisher,

and this book is not due
to be in the booksellers

for several weeks.

The only copies of this book
are in boxes

in the publishing house.

So, Vikram Chamberlain,

how is it
that you, in a hidden room

in a castle in Belgrade,

seem to have a copy?

- [whimpers]
- What are your secrets, Vikram?

[music]

CHARLIE: Vikram.

No. None of that.

I am at peace with being alone.

You're not alone.

Yes, you have us,

but Anya wrote you
another letter.

CHARLIE: What does it say?

"My dearest Vikram,

I was astonished
to see your words in my book.

I long for your hands

and your lips on my"--

[clears throat]

well...

[mumbles] I'm gonna save
the rest of that for later.

[clears throat]

Ah, here we are!
"I have made headway

in my investigation

since I last wrote
by retracing my steps."

ANYA: But the crates and the man
were nowhere to be found.

Luckily, some evidence
was left behind."

Sorry.

[indistinct chatter]

That is no way for a lady
to behave.

- I'm not a lady!
- Well, if you are not,

I will call the constable
to deal with you,

but if you are,
we can deal with each other.

Now, are you going to keep
your hands to yourself?

Perhaps you could help me
with something.

There was a gentleman
with boxes over there,

and now they're missing.

Do you know where he went?

I dropped a coin earlier.
Did you happen to see it?

- A penny?
- Sixpence.

Very well.

I don't know where he went,

but I heard him talk
about the Cabot Club.

The Cabot Club.

It's a gentlemen's-only club,
no women allowed,

not even servants.

As a lady, I'm offended.

As am I.

I don't suppose
you have any brothers, do you?

About my size?

I dropped a shilling
earlier, too.

[music]

MAN: This is what you need.
Nitric acid.

Hmm.

A chemical reaction, eh?

Fascinating.

MAN: Only when exposed
to the elements.

BUTLER: Boy!
That is meant for the kitchens!

ANYA: Yes, sir.

[gasps] Ugh, a woman!

Insufferable bluestockings!

[groans]
Next thing you know,

they'll be wanting the vote!

"The man in question eluded me,

but while he is
otherwise nondescript,

I did manage to catch a glimpse
of a strange tattoo on his arm."

Well, what kind of tattoo?
The navy? A prisoner?

This is just like her to offer
a modicum of information,

and then, flit it away--

there's more on the bottom.

"Flip the page over, darling."

Hmm.

My word.

It's worse than the navy.

CONNOR: What? What is it?

Is that...

Serpent Brotherhood.

Vikram, calm down.

I'll try Lysa again.

I am calm.

I am amazingly calm.

I will be calmer
when I get back to 1857.

Now where's my cane?

Aha!

Vik, you can't do that.

You're gonna tell me how
I'm messing with the timeline,

cause an apocalypse,
blah, blah, blah?

Also, we dismantled
your time machine.

It's completely useless.

I don't care!

This is the Serpent Brotherhood!

Do you know how active
they had been

in the 19th Century?

Do you know how many Librarians

have lost their lives
in their quest

to let magic
loose upon the world?

Which is why
you should warn her. Right?

Tell her how dangerous they are.

[laughing]

Warn her?
You would like me to warn her?

All right. I will show you
how this goes, hmm?

"Dearest Anya,
this man is beyond dangerous,

stay away from him
at all costs."

Good. I'm sure she will listen.

"Dear Vikram,

that's adorable."

Anya has many
wonderful qualities,

but incuriousness
is not one of them.

She will dive
headlong into this,

and I cannot stop her.

If she's gonna go
after him anyway,

let's help her.

CHARLIE: And Connor's right.

You can't go back in time,
but we can still help.

- Yeah.
- In her letters, she said

the man with the tattoo
was meeting someone

with golden fingers.

- And a trunk of chemicals.
- Photography.

There were tons of chemicals
used in early photography.

Uh, silver nitrate,

uh, mercury vapor.

Sodium thiosulfate
was used to set photographs.

Yes. It was cutting edge
in my time.

They would tone it with gold
to make the image stronger.

Which would stain the fingers.

So, we are looking
for a photographer.

And to be allowed
into the Cabot Club,

he'd have to come
from a good reputation,

- possibly a Peer.
- CHARLIE: Hmm.

There can only be so many
photographers in London in 1857.

You know what?

I'm betting
there's a book in here

with their names and addresses.

[music]

VIKRAM: "If you insist
on pursuing this course,

here is a list
of photographers in the area,

- hopefully one will..."
- [horse neighs]

[music]

VIKRAM: "Hopefully
one will bear fruit.

Please be careful, my love,
danger is lurking."

[music]

[horse neighs]

- MRS. ASTOLAT: Finally!
- [gasps] Ooh!

- There you are.
- Mrs. Astolat.

- Were you just following me?
- Of course!

In fact, I have been looking
for you for some time.

Why? Is everything all right?

I did not think
you ever left Belgrade.

Only out of necessity.

I've been charged
with closing out

Vikram's annex to the Library.

I cannot do that until all
its contents have been returned.

[sighs] I believe
you have the last one.

- A copy of Jane Eyre?
- No.

I mean, yes, I do have it,

but I cannot give it to you.

I understand you may have some
sentimental attachment.

Vikram's annex must be
reabsorbed into the Library.

It's far too dangerous
to have it sitting open.

It is not sentiment.

It is Vikram.

I do not know why or how,

but because of this book,
I'm able to speak with him.

And it's been so long.

And I've missed him,

and been lonely enough,
and so angry with him,

so to see his handwriting
from across time is...

Oh, my poor dear girl.

I can only imagine
how you're feeling.

It's not just that.

I saw something
that looked like magic.

And Vikram is helping me
investigate.

So, you see,
I cannot give this back to you,

not yet, at least.

The Library must have known
you needed Vikram,

and found a way
to lend him to you.

I will help you on your quest.

But once the deed is done,

the book must go back
into its place.

Does that sound fair?

Indeed.

So, what are we hunting?

A photographer. [giggles]

[bell ringing]

Uh, Mr., uh, Bambridge?

Mr. William Bambridge?

Well, this is certainly
a better class

of photographic studio
than the other five we've seen.

Oh, yes.
Well, look at that clientele.

[gasps]

"Royal photographer
to her Majesty Queen Victoria."

Hmm. Mr. Bambridge?

I'm here to have
my portrait taken?

- Something feels off.
- Feels off?

I was a knight, Lady Anya.

I learned to trust my feelings.

You would think
at the very least,

a photographer to the Queen
would have a camera.

[gasps] See? The markings
on the floor, there.

There was a tripod here.

[glass shatters]

[gasps] Ooh.

[music]

[gasps] Goodness.

It's the photographer
from the club.

Someone was just here.

Uh, Mr. Bambridge?
Mr. Bambridge!

No sign of him.

Whoever he was, he's slippery.

Is he alive?

Barely. Weak pulse.

Looks like a blow to the head.

We must get him
to the hospital at once.

- She found him.
- The photographer?

Yes. Research for the win, baby.
Come on.

They found him almost dead.
He had been attacked.

If they got there
a minute earlier,

Anya would've been
the one who was attacked.

But she's all right.

Only by sheer luck!

This. This is what comes
from our help?

[groans] I am stuck.

Mired in a different time
and place

and I cannot save her.

Well, imagine how she felt,

every time you went off
to be the Librarian.

This is not the same.
She was never a Librarian.

No, she's not.

But there is a Librarian
in 1857.

Oh, uh--

ah, The Book of Librarians.

A registry of every single
Librarian in history.

Oh, Connor,
you beautiful genius.

If I can't be by her side,
at least a Librarian can!

Found him!

And in 1857,
he's based in London.

My darling,

you must now realize
it is far too dangerous

to investigate alone.

With the Serpent Brotherhood
involved,

the time has come
to bring in assistance.

The Librarian of your time,

the one who no doubt
replaced me,

will know how to help."

CONNOR:
His name's Benedict Hale.

He studied at Oxford.
The Sorbonne, has...

almost as many degrees as me.

He's travelled everywhere.

[doors open]

- Studied martial arts in Japan.
- Hmm.

CHARLIE: Benedict Hale.

If you would wait here, my lady.

Mr. Hale will be with you
shortly.

VIKRAM:
"With the help of the Librarian,

you will be safe."

[music]

[music]

Mr. Hale will be just a moment.

May I bring you
some refreshment?

No, thank you.

Actually, I would love some tea,
if that's all right.

[music]

[door opening and closing]

Lady Anya Besson.

Do you know
I could hardly believe it

when my valet handed me
your card.

- Mr. Hale.
- Well, what have I done

to earn the pleasure
of your visit?

No, the pleasure is all mine.

You know, I know knew we've not
been formally introduced,

but your face,
it's very familiar to me.

I feel like I've seen you
somewhere before.

I doubt that, I've only just
arrived in London.

Which makes your familiarity
all the more strange.

I mean, we don't exactly run
in the same circles, you and I.

Hmm, no.

Besides, you still haven't
told me why you're here.

An acquaintance suggested
that I call upon you.

Who?

Which acquaintance?

Oh, I, uh...

- oh, goodness me!
- Careful!

- [clattering]
- Oh, sorry.

Modern fashion
is terribly constricting.

- Oh, quite.
- Oh, no.

Have I damaged your trophy?

No , this is not a trophy.

This is the Silver Star
of Abyssinia.

Ancient, and intact, thankfully.

- Hmm.
- Please.

Oh, thank you.

You're too kind.

Lady Anya, I need to know
who sent you.

Mr. Bambridge.

- Bambridge?
- ANYA: Yes.

Bambridge.

You see, I had my portrait
taken a few weeks ago.

Oh, that must be
where you know me from.

You must have seen it
at his studio.

He said that
you might be able to help me.

Help you with what?

I am raising money
for the widows and orphans

of the terrible conflict
in Crimea.

Mr. Bambridge said that

you're a man of intellect
and sympathy.

Can the widows and orphans count
on your support?

Hmm.

[horse neighs]

[music]

[gasps]

We must stop meeting like this.

Mrs. Astolat, you frightened me.

You seem already frightened.

Mr. Bambridge?

Oh, at the hospital,
still unconscious.

I left him
in the hands of a nurse.

Nightingale-trained, thank God.

She thinks
he'll make a good recovery.

Good. We must go home
at once to write to Vikram.

Why? Was the new Librarian
not able to help you?

It's him.
The man I saw with the orb.

The new Librarian's been
corrupted

by the Serpent Brotherhood.

CHARLIE: I don't get it.

That the Book of Librarians has
nothing on Benedict Hale

being corrupted
by the Serpent Brotherhood.

And I think I know why.

Anya got a better look
this time,

hence I was able
to find her orb.

Benedict Hale is in possession
of the Scrying Ball.

But I thought the Scrying Ball
was already in the Library?

It wasn't in 1857.

Uh, hold on.
What's the Scrying Ball?

It's what the myths of crystal
ba*ls are based on.

It shows the future.

More specifically,
the worst of future.

Oh, it's a nightmare fuel.

And judging by Benedict's
m*rder board,

his nightmare is World w*r I.

It's a good guess
that the Serpent Brotherhood

found the Scrying Ball,
and then fed it to Benedict

to turn him to their side.

But the reason it's not
in the Book of Librarians

is that anytime
a future is revealed,

the act of revelation allows
that future to be changed.

- A Librarian would know that.
- Uh-huh.

So Benedict intends
to change the future?

- Hmm.
- I mean, I don't blame him.

If you saw the trenches
of World w*r I,

- wouldn't you try to stop it?
- CHARLIE: Yeah, but how?

It doesn't happen
for another 60 years.

Victoria. She's the nexus point.

Are you telling me

that Queen Victoria
caused World w*r I?

No, no, no, no.
But before Victoria,

the British monarchy
was in crisis.

She takes the throne at 18,

the last member
of the royal line.

Then, she married her
beloved Albert

and proceeded to produce
some half a dozen royal brats.

Actually, she had nine,

the last being born in 1857.

These little princes
and princesses grow up

to marry all across
the royal houses of Europe.

In World w*r I,

Britain's George V is fighting

against his cousin,
Kaiser Wilhelm.

And their other cousin,
Alexandra,

is married
to Nicholas II of Russia ,

and they're busy watching
his empire fall.

These are Victoria's
grandchildren.

All of Europe
is a massive network

of cousins and relationships.

And if you were the Librarian
in 1857

and you wanted to change
that future,

one thing you could do
is take out these players.

But I don't mean to play
devil's advocate,

but wouldn't it be a good thing
to stop World w*r I?

Magic always has consequences.

And these consequences
are severe.

The consensus of nearly
every historian

is that World w*r I
happens no matter what.

There were too many tensions
rising across Europe

from too many
different directions.

But, having these royal houses
related to each other

keep it from happening too soon.

Okay, gaming this on,

if a British succession crisis
happens in 1857,

that would just drive wild
Austro-Hungarian expansion--

Could you please summarize it
for those of us

who don't have advanced
history degrees?

The most likely scenario is that

if you remove the British
royal family in 1857,

World w*r I doesn't start
in 1914.

It starts around 1890,

before America is ready
to enter the w*r.

So the Allies actually lose.

Which would have a cascade
effect on history.

It changes the w*r after that,

which causes another w*r
after that,

this one with mutual nuclear
capabilities.

[music]

CONNOR: So...

Instead of stopping World w*r I,

Benedict Hale
causes World w*r III

by k*lling Queen Victoria
and her family.

How?

Wait, didn't Anya say
she was in London

to celebrate the birth

of the newest
prince or princess?

Yes. The royal family
will be together in public,

a rare occurrence.

But Anya saw no evidence
of weaponry.

Except for nitric acid.

Uh, it's used in expl*sives,
munitions.

It's also used
in early photography.

Uh, camera plates were coated
in silver nitrate.

The Silver Star! Yes.

The Silver Star of Abyssinia.

"When the proper
incantation is spoken,

the Silver Star of Abyssinia
is capable

of taking the souls
of those in view."

So if Benedict uses nitric acid

to turn the Silver Star
into a camera plate...

Bambridge.
He's a royal photographer.

Benedict poses as him,
takes the photo,

and the royal family blips
out of existence.

I must warn Anya. She cannot--

What's it say?

She has figured out
Benedict's plan.

And she intends to stop him.

MRS. ASTOLAT:
This lace is so itchy.

ANYA: Yes. Well, fashion is
rarely comfortable.

You should not have spent
so much of your money on me.

I didn't. Benedict Hale gave 10
pounds for widows and orphans,

and I thought the best use
was preventing him

from making any more widows
and orphans.

I do not see
how an itchy dress helps.

Well, we must blend in.

MAN: Yeah, come on, ladies.

If we are to find Mr. Hale

before he uses
the magic camera on the Queen.

But how are we going to do that?

No idea. Making it up
as I go.

- [chuckles]
- ANYA: What?

You and Vikram Chamberlain
are quite the pair.

- ANYA: Ah.
- MRS. ASTOLAT: Ah.

ANYA: Major Domo.

Will the Queen be joining us?

I understand her confinement
must be very near.

We do not discuss The Queen's
physical condition, ma'am.

It's just I haven't
seen Her Majesty

since I was a lady-in-waiting.
I would hate to miss her.

MAJOR DOMO: The Queen
will be joining you shortly.

The royal family is simply
having their portrait taken

in the East Garden.

Thank you.

- East Garden?
- East Garden.

Hmm.

[music]

My apologies, Your Majesty.

Mr. Bambridge is ill
and he sent me in his place.

Now, if we could all gather
a little closer to one another.

How are we going to get
to the camera

with all those guards present?

You get the camera.
I'll get the guards.

How are you going to do that?

You're not the only one who
remembers Vikram Chamberlain.

You cannot actually k*ll anyone.

[groans] Hmm.

Even more fun.

[music]

Oi, fancy boys!

I've got a weapon
near The Queen,

and I'm going to use it.
BENEDICT: [gasps]

Your Majesty!

Please, your guards
will take care of it.

We cannot lose the...

Guards! [pants]

Your Majesty, please,
just stay there.

[music]

Please.

Please, just one more letter.

CHARLIE:
Connor's deep in the stacks,

researching.

[music]

- Vikram.
- Don't.

Don't tell me
that she will be fine.

Don't tell me
that she will be all right

because you cannot know that.

- I wasn't going to.
- Good.

Because right now,
her future and your past,

they are in flux.

And maybe Benedict Hale
causes World w*r III,

maybe he does not.

And maybe Anya
doesn't die of old age

surrounded by her loved ones.

Maybe she dies
trying to stop him.

And my whole world will end
if that happens.

[music]

You know,
waiting's the hardest part.

I always try and distract myself
by hitting something.

When Anya first came
into this annex,

I fell in love with her
immediately.

It was as if the very ground
tipped on its side,

and I slid right off.

And I am yet
to find my bearings.

Why?

Because she's brilliant,
intelligent, brave.

She made me feel like
I could do anything.

But really,
she was the one who could.

You still believe in her?

Then there is one more thing
you can do.

[palace guards grunting]

Yes, I am a woman.

Stick it in your pipe
and smoke it.

[swords clashing]

[music]

[gasps]

[music]

Okay.

- [gasps]
- There you are.

- No, no!
- Give it--give it to me!

- [grunts]
- [panting]

Lady Anya,
I should have known.

Mr. Hale, you cannot do this.

I'm gonna save the world.

You dare to stand in my way?

You foolish woman.

You are wrong.

You will not save it.

You will instead destroy it.

I'm a Librarian.

I have magic at my fingertips.

And I am never wrong.

No.

No.

[music]

VIKRAM: "My love,
I would do anything right now

to be next to you,

but I cannot cross time
except in words,

and the only words I can give
you right now are these.

You told me once
that I could move mountains,

but it was you who really could,

as easily as you moved me.

You have my heart,

but you also have the heart
of a true Librarian.

You are a reflection
of all the good there is."

Reflection?

VIKRAM: "And all the best
I wish to be.

Do everything in your power
to stop him

and show the world
how amazing you can be."

Right. Well, there's more than
one way out of a maze.

[rustling]

[music]

How did you...

I won't let you do this.

[gasps] Guards!

- Deal with this woman!
- Get your hands off of me!

No!

Deal with this woman.

I have a picture to take.

ANYA: Mr. Hale, you can't.

No, Mr. Hale, you can't.

Mr. Hale, you can't!

Apologies for the delay,
Your Majesty.

Now, remember, do hold still.

This will go down in history.

Hoc Oblatum est Anima Mea.

What was that?

Oh, nothing, Your Majesty.

Now please remember,
it's imperative

that you stay perfectly still.

Perfectly still.

[music]

Now look and hold still,
Your Majesty.

What's happening? No!

No!

- [palace guards grunt]
- Oh.

Ha. Thank you, Mrs. Astolat.

These palace guards
need better training.

So, what did I miss?

My compact mirror.

Useful for looking
around corners,

checking one's appearance,

and foiling plots.

Vikram said the camera
would steal the soul

of whoever it saw.

So when Mr. Hale wasn't looking,

I slipped my mirror in
to redirect the camera's gaze

back to him
and away from The Queen.

[gasps] The Queen.

Lady Anya.

Your Majesty.

Was that meant to happen?

Oh, that?

That was just a...

trick of the light.

You may move now, Your Majesty.

[groans]

[music]

Oh, it's so different now,

without Vikram here.

He's still here.

Or he'll be again.

Well, at least this
infernal contraption

can be kept safe in the Library.

And this Scrying Ball.

Yes. And now
the Annex can close.

A promise is a promise.

I am truly sorry to take him
from you like this.

I did not know what it meant
to be a Librarian until now.

The Library needs Vikram.

Hmm.

And the world needs the Library.

If I have to give him up again,

it can't be for anything
less than that.

You acquitted yourself very well
on this adventure.

I wouldn't be surprised
if the Library

found use for you in the future.

[laughs] Ha. The future?

Well, that is a
delightful thought.

What are your secrets, Vikram?

I have a strange feeling

that I will never be able
to keep any secrets from you,

Anya.

Oh, no, I'm very determined.

So I am learning.

[music]

ANYA: "My love, by now, you know
the world did not end,

just as it did not end
when we were first separated.

It kept going on.

At first, I thought cruelly,

but now I know it moved forward
for both of our sakes.

VIKRAM: Anya?

Not quite. Sorry.

Lysa.

LYSA: Sorry.

Connor and Charlie filled me in.

I feel like I missed out
on a lot, eh?

Indeed.

You would have loved your
great-great grandmother.

You and her share
the same spirit.

And it's never been more
apparent than today.

She sounds amazing.

I would love to read her letters
sometime, maybe?

I think she would
approve of that.

[chuckles]

ANYA: "Since you've been gone,
I feel like I was asleep.

But suddenly, I've been awoken
to all the magic in the world,

ordinary and extraordinary.

And I want to be a part of it."

Today has been harrowing,

painful,

but also a gift.

Because I know now that I will
always have Anya with me.

ANYA: "And you can be
a part of it, too.

Do your work, live life,

and keep me close
to your heart."

Because the best of her
lives on.

In her words,

in this place,

and in you.

And in you, too.

ANYA: "But don't stop
experiencing the world.

It is wide and full of wonders.

And I, for one,
intend to enjoy it."

But for now...

Where are we going?

Connor, Charlie, come along.

We are going out.

You are going to introduce me

to your coffee
and movie friends.

Uh, coffee guy's
not really a friend.

- LYSA: What?
- Uh, don't care, let's go.
