We're going on a helicopter.

- Is it anybody's first time on a helicopter?

- Hell yeah, we are about to go in a helicopter

over the Grand Canyon for my birthday!

- Mormons passed a rule on Thursday

that if you have g*y parents, you can't be Mormon.

- There's been a lot going on recently

with the Church that is just blatant discrimination.

that they can't come to your church

because of who they are.

that children of same-sex couples

are now classified as apostates of the Mormon Church,

from Mormonism event in Salt Lake City

to stop practicing a year ago.

We don't want to take things too seriously,

because we understand we're here to have fun

and enjoy ourselves.

really offensive.

Super offensive, rude, argumentative, and,

like, I'm kind of getting tired of it.

about people who have been, you know,

speaking out against the Church and got excommunicated,

and all of those people will be there,

and it will be really cool.

Are you--you're not even prepared.

- I think--I've been thinking about what I want to write,

and, um, it's really different

to, like, be outspoken about it

in the house, like, with you guys.

But like doing this is not just,

like, talking about my experience with it.

It's, like, getting up there and saying to,

like, everybody I know, including my family, like,

"The institution that you're a part of

actively discriminates"...

- Against large groups of people.

- "Against huge groups of people who have done nothing to you."

Realizing that I could be a part of this movement

and that I'd have an opportunity

to actually say something, like,

that means that my family's going

to have to go through the scrutiny

and, like, the embarrassment of having

a very outspoken apostate child.

I think the reason why I'm nervous

is, I try and not let, like,

my family politics intervene with,

like, my personal politics,

but maybe,

like, two days before I came here,

I talked to one of my favorite aunts.

And she was like, "Christopher, the Church

isthemost important thing

toallof the people you love."

- I haven't spoken to either one of my parents

about leaving the Church.

My dad, he's more concerned

with protecting his standing in the Church than he is,

like, validating the most important thing

I've ever decided to do.

I feel like it's important to be like,

So I know that hiking can be very intense,

but I don't want to go home.

to Turtle Peak.

within minutes

or you do not succeed in the mission.

trek up a mountain.

Oh, okay, so my leisurely hike

that I thought I was gonna do with the trees and everything,

get my Pocahontas on, no, that's not happening.



- This mission is big-time go big or go home.

This mountain is freaking humongous.

Somebody is not gonna make it.

- We'll provide you some maps to stay on the trail.

This peak is , feet in elevation.

- Looking at this mountain,

this is not gonna be a walk in the park.

- The clock will begin in three minutes.

- Our weakest link better be ready,

I'm wanting it to be perfect.

So I've been changing it a lot.

- Nothing in life is perfect.

- I feel a lot of pressure.

It's not just my story that needs to be heard.

It's the story of so many other people

who I knew, and who are like me.

Now I have this opportunity to tell it,

and I just want to make sure that I do it in a way

that just brings them, if not some amount of justice,

just a small amount of closure.

because we have just been made to be quiet for so long.

This is probably one of the most important things

that I will do in my entire life.

I'm, like, back in Utah,

and it's not really any place

I like coming back to very often,

but making this decision

I'm nervous, but it feels really good.

- Utah's one saving grace is the fact that I

still have this amazing support group there

and there are people that I met while I was growing up

and people I met at BYU.

And--whew! That--it,

like, takes a lot of stress off my shoulders.

- We're gonna invite you to walk to the mailbox

to mail your letters.

- At this rally, Chris

is able to just write a letter

and then literally just walk and drop it off at a mailbox.

And that's it. He's done with the Church.

He's here doing exactly what he's been wanting to do,

I'm starting to realize

I really could care less

about hanging out with the cool kids.

There's nowhere that I would rather be.

- Experiences like this bring up really

scary memories

and feelings for me.

It was by the hands of, like, Mormon people

that I experienced all of the abuse.



- Wow, this must be it.

- It's just--this is it. - Yeah.

- I just keep thinking about all the people who I've,

like, written about in this letter, you know,

myself included.

Seeing the things I've seen, like,

I have to do this.

which I think is a good sign. - Yeah.

I thought it was gonna feel like an end,

and it feels a lot more like a beginning.

no longer are people in Utah gonna stand

behind walls of silence.

- Growing up, there was only one time

where I had enough courage

to tell a leader in the Church, "I think I'm getting abused."

He told me to shut up.

- We were just introduced to a young man today

named Chris who is resigning today.

We want to have him say a few words.

- Sometimes telling somebody isn't enough.

At the end of the day,

if you want to stop a cycle of abuse,

you've got to go out of your way

to make sure that your voice is heard.

of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,

I have always been taught to stand for what is right.

While at BYU,

when I learned that g*y men

were being hunted like witches or communists

only to be expelled from the university

and then publicly outed to their friends and family,

who was there to stand for what was right?

When I learned that a dear friend had been drugged

and r*ped, a r*pe

that was never reported to the police

even after being shared with a bishop,

who was there?

When a friend confessed to me

that after six years

of weekly forced conversion therapy,

he had expressed to his family his desire to end it

and finally be with another man,

just to be cut off by his family completely,

who was there?

And when our leadership declared

that those in same-sex marriages

are to be considered apostate

and that their children must stop

living with their adoptive parents

in order to be baptized,

who was there?

- Yeah. [cheers and applause]

- Today I am proud to stand with others like me,

who, when their Church refuses to do so on its own,

will stand apart from it and independently say,

"I am here to stand for what is right."
