to be here.

get to experience
this amazing institution

and what it has to offer.

My friend Nicole,
she lives in the Boston area,

we're both trans and we met
at a transgender event,

and since then,
we've been close.

So I haven't told any
of you this yet,

but I talked to Nicole
while I was still in Florida.

and she told me she's not
allowed to renew her lease

and she basically it's assumed
because her landlord found out
she was transgender.

Really?

And this isn't just happening
to Nicole, this is happening
to a lot of my friends.

Jacklyn had to quit her job

because she was facing
complications for being
transgender.

Like, the world
is not supportive
of transgender people.

-And it's worse than ever.
-I want to do some sort
of event

or maybe like a flash mob,
I don't know.

Any time you've ever done
something big,

Dad and I have made
sure that there's security
there too.

gonna be there

and I'm concerned
that it just takes one
crazy, cruel hater.

Look, I'm 21 years old now
and I can decide for myself

what I want to do
with my life and how
I want to present myself.

And, you know, it really
is up to me

the Harvard administration

saying that, um, they want
to meet with me.

And at first,
I'm really concerned

because I'm like, "Oh,
did I do something bad?

Like, what is going on?"

So I walk into the room
with administrator

and there was a police
officer there,

and immediately, I know
that this is not good.

Um, and they tell me
that they received a message

saying that someone
wanted to k*ll me.

And obviously any time
you get a message like that,
it's like, "Holy [bleep]."

Like someone wants to k*ll me
and it's a lot.

It's a lot to take in
and I know I try to say,

"It's gonna be okay,
everything's all right."

But like this is serious.

This potential perpetrator
knows that I attend Harvard,

and this is my real life.

This isn't just
a social media threat.

This is someone, you know,
sending it to the school
that I go to,

and it's an awful feeling.

You can get used
to being hated on.

Like, that's fine, I have
a thick skin, I don't care
what people think.

But when someone threatens
to k*ll you and they know

where you live and what school
you attend?

It's terrifying.

but this time it just
feels different

because they know
I'm at Harvard,

of people together,

and we're gonna make a video
for trans awareness week

featuring all the individuals
who attend the event.

And I have this idea
that everyone would write

their dreams
on a poster board.

And then we could put
them all together, or have
each person hold them up.

more trans-acceptance today

than there has been
ever before,

but, at the same time,
there's also more polarizing

and contrasting views
than there has been before
as well

and it's a little scary.

We can do something smaller,
just the three of us,
and we can

do an at-home, like,
almost like a virtual version
of the event

if you feel
that you don't want to do it
in person...

that they have

for trans equality
and then we're gonna
hold up our signs

and make a video
of a collection
of all of the signs.

So it's gonna be
really beautiful

and I'm so happy
that you're all here
to be a part of this.

in this world

where transgender people
aren't accepted like

and I'm absolutely terrified.

that I'd be experiencing
a lot of social anxiety,

but I feel like
I'm holding my own.

My wish is for
all environments to be safe

and affirming
for transgender folks.

[Jazz] For me to be
in front of people
and speak out like that,

it's something I have
shied away from in the past

and I feel proud of myself
for being able to do it.

I honestly was not prepared
as to what I just walked into,
in a good way.

It's one of the most

an LGBTQ event.

There was just a wave
of flags.

The pink, the blue, the white.

And it's beautiful.
The sun is going down

and the light is shining
on everybody.

I don't know. It's just
a very special magical moment.

And I'm glad I'm here
and I feel better
about things now.

It is so hard to let go
when I have been
so protective of her,

but I'm so proud of Jazz
and the woman
that she has become.

because she is
the strongest person
that I know.

She has given me a strength
that I didn't know I had.

I mean, my eyes are
welling up with tears
because...

I never was
the most confident person.

I was always, like,
people-pleaser,
and I still am to some extent.

What are people gonna think?"

And she stands in her truth.

I just wanted to thank you all

This really does mean
a lot to me.

The trans community has
faced a lot of blows
in the past year

and forever and it's time
that that changes.

I'm really proud of her
for where she's at right now.

She's overcome
so many obstacles,

even a death threat,
but she's not going to let

a threat like that
stop her from
living her life.

That's hard as a parent...

but at the same time,
it makes us proud

that she's comfortable
in who she is...

and to spread
a message of love...

That's really what life is
all about.

So I really am proud
of all of you

and I hope that all
of these wishes come true

and that the world can become
a more accepting
and loving place

for all people.

about my journey
over the past few months.

stressful situations.

a lot of experience
this summer

when it comes to dating.

I know that I can find people
who do respect my identity
as a transwoman

and who look at me for me.

I feel really empowered,
not only in my trans-identity,

but in my identity as
a young woman

and I feel like I'm stepping
into my independent self

and the fact that I was able
to help curate this event

and everything's going
so smoothly

and everyone's having
a good time,

I feel really good about it.
