a year ago, today

into my first apartment.

I feel like
there's no opportunities

to come move to LA.

do it. Literally,
just to do it.

It can be very difficult

as a trans woman, especially
down here in South Florida.

I face a lot of hate
and discrimination.

So, alongside with me
growing as an influencer,

I really want to grow
as a model.

And I feel like
that would be so huge

to have in the LA scene,

um, and live my dreams.

So I actually do know
this older transgender woman.

Her name is Lauren Foster,
she's very beautiful,

and back in the '80s,
she did a lot of modeling,

and I think she was
on the cover of
a major magazine.

Yeah, she could definitely
provide some perspective

on what's it like to live
in LA as a transgender woman.

[Tyler] That'd be awesome,

To, like, just making
connections, like,
with anyone

especially people who have
been through similar
situations, like...

Lauren Foster is this gorgeous
transgender model

that I have known
for many, many years.

And I'm bringing her up
because Jaclyn and Tyler

are looking to move to LA

and live the high life

She was a little baby.

on the red carpet
and I grabbed her.

Well, she is just awesome,
and she's...

We have a lot of fun together.

She knew...
She was talked to everybody.

And I'm a little offish

But she was amazing.

totally outshone me

It was crazy.

very similar upbringings.

I came out when I was,
like, three years old,

I didn't come out,
but, like, I knew
something was up.

just like Jazz's parents.

They was very,
very understanding.

My mother, my grandmother,
like, "Be who you are."

It's important to support,
you know, trans youth
all over the place.

fetishize trans women now.

Modeling is hard
for any woman.

Uh, well, modeling is hard
for any person.

But little on a trans person.

maybe these girls shouldn't
take it so seriously

about being trans.

Well, for me, the objective
has always been
to not make a big deal

about being trans
and being a model.

You should just be a model.

Basically, deep down,
we really just want

-to be accepted just as women.

Yeah, I am completely in awe
by everything that Jazz is
telling me about, um...

-As far as everything
you've done for the community.

And I know you were the...
One of the first
transgender models

for a really big, um,
fashion magazine.

Kind of like a weird moment
because no one knew

-that I was trans
when I did this.
-Hmm.

And I couldn't
really tell anybody,

and then, like,
a couple of months later, a...

A model outed me.

-Uh-huh.
-And, you know,
it was all over.

-It was in the National
Enquirer and stuff like that.
-I'm so sorry.

So, that was kind of sucky,
but it was fine because,

like, a month
after it came out,

it was probably lining
at the bottom of a birdcage,
you know? So...

So, it just quickly went by,
unlike social media now.

-If it happened now,
it'd be everywhere.
-Yeah, something happens...

So, there was kind of
like a mixed blessing,
you know?

But it was cool.
It was a major moment for me.

-Yeah. You're a pioneer.

where she is,

but I'm there in spirit.
And I think that's truth
for the whole family.

Wherever anyone of us are,

whether we're together
or one of us is there,

we're all on the same page,
fighting for the same cause.

to decide

whether gender-affirming care
will be allowed
in the State of Florida.

Hi, everybody.

[Jeanette] With Jazz,
when she was little,

or, you know, a minor,

I was always putting out fires
before she got burned.

I walked her into preschool,
and everybody was whispering
and pointing fingers

and just looking down upon us,

and I held my head high
and I held my child's hand

and I said,
"We're gonna go in there.

I don't care
what the other kids think

and it doesn't matter
what the parents think.

You're special,
you're unique
and you're you,

and I'm so proud of you
and I'm so proud
to be your mom and..." [gasps]

I'm saying this
to a four-year-old.
I had to say this to her

'cause she was upset
that the other kids
were, like,

making fun of her
for acting girly.

And I had to tell her,
"It's okay. You be you.
You do you.

And we're here for you.
We love you no matter what."

[Jeanette] I'm the proud
mom of four.

My youngest child,
Jazz, is transgender

and she's at the audience
as a way of supporting me.

We were told
by medical professionals

that 40% to 50%
of kids like Jazz
would attempt suicide

without good
gender-affirming care.

Jazz herself has told us

if she was forced
to go through male puberty,

she would've taken her life.

As a young child,
she had nightmares
about having facial hair.

After extensive guidance
from medical professionals,

we promised we'd do
everything in our power

to ensure that Jazz
would be able
to live as a girl.

[Jazz] Love you, Mom.

[Jeanette] And now, I ask
all of you who are opposed
to gender-affirming care,

what would you do
if your child was transgender?

Thank you very much.

I would not be
the person I am today
if it weren't for my mom.

She spreads
so much unconditional love
to everyone.

And it's not just her family.
Like, she is an advocate,

a major force
for the community.

I am beyond blessed
to have my mom,

and I'm just so,
so proud of her.

Where do you think you
and your family would be at

-without this healthcare?
-Uh, my daughter would
not be with us today.

She will tell you that she,
with all her heart and soul,
is a girl.

And if she wasn't allowed
to live her authentic self,

then she wouldn't
wanna live at all.

My son is over here.
He's fully bearded.
Adam's apple.

She doesn't wanna look
like him.

She wants to look
like the beautiful young lady
that she is.

Hearing your speech,
it was so heartfelt,
so authentic.

And when you called me out
at the end, that was
the sweetest thing and...

I just feel very, very blessed
that I have someone like you

who's always gonna be
on my team,

who's gonna
love me unconditionally.

As complex as our relationship
can be sometimes,

the love is always
gonna be there

and we're always

unconditionally.
