[Nolan roars] Mine has a big tail.

[Heather] And mine has big wings.

You got dinosaurs.

-There's just a rock monster here.
-[chuckling]

No more dinosaurs?

Oh, sorry, Koo.
I only have four dinosaurs.

But the rock monster sort of looks
like a dinosaur.

Yeah, and rock monsters can stomp
and roar too.

-[Heather roars] I'm gonna swoop down.
-[children roar, chuckle]

Mine is not the same.
Rock monsters do not have tails.

Rock monsters can't fly. [sighs]
Rock monsters don't stomp.

I want to play dinosaur.
I don't think it's fair.

Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp.
Bronto likes the sunshine.

Maybe rock monsters like sunshine too.

Hey, Karl. My dino wants to go to space.

Yeah. Let's go outside and play spaceship.

-[Nolan] Yeah.
-[Emma laughing]

I love the spaceship.

Captain Koo will be right there.
I'll get my helmet.

Let's get ready for takeoff.

[Nolan] I don't think we can all fit.

I know, Koo! Since Emma's never
been inside the spaceship,

we can let her be the captain this time,
and you can do the space walk outside.

[imitating space suit noise]

-[Karl] Whoa!
-[Heather] Whoa!

-Whoa! Whoa!
-[Emma strains] Sharp turn to the left!

[Karl] Whoa!

-[chuckling]
-[chuckles] Whoa!

I have been waiting.

Now can I be the captain?
I'd really like to.

Not yet, Koo.
Emma hasn't finished her turn yet.

Watch out. It's a meteor shower.

[Heather, Nolan] Meteor shower.

-Whoa. Hold on, everybody.
-[Nolan] Whoa!

Oh, no. The spaceship was hit by a meteor.

Maybe Koo can fix the spaceship
on her space walk.

Spaceship to spacewalker Koo.

Can you help fix our ship?

[grunting] I fixed it for you.

Can you come play outside now?
It's not fun out here.

[Karl] A few more minutes, Koo.

Everyone's inside,
and there's no room for me.

This game is not fair.

[Emma chuckles]

-[Heather laughing]
-[Karl] Yeah!

-[sighs]
-[door opens]

Would the astronauts like some lemonade?

Hi, Stillwater.

[Heather] Astronauts love lemonade.

Thanks, Stillwater.

All that flying made us thirsty.

[gasps] You took the red cup?

That's the one I always choose.

on the driveway.

I'm gonna make a turtle.

I'm gonna make an alligator.

I'm going to make a green robot.

[laughing]

Mine isn't like yours.

You are all drawing fun things.

It's okay. You could draw a cloud.

I see you are no longer playing
with the others.

No, not anymore.

I was hoping to have fun,
but nothing was fair.

I see. Tell me, Koo,
what does fair mean to you?

I think it is fair
when we all get the same thing.

Everything equal.

Hmm. If I eat 12 sticks of bamboo
for my snack,

should you also eat 12 to be fair?

[chuckles] That would be silly.

My tummy gets full with three.
You are much bigger.

[chuckles] Ah. So you see,

things don't always have to
be exactly equal to be fair.

But it's not much fun when someone else
gets a thing that is what you want.

No, I imagine it's not.

You know, I have a story that
might help you see things differently.

[schoolchildren chattering]

[Stillwater] It was the very first day
of kindergarten.

And Josiah was so excited to play ball
in the playground.

But so were other kids.

Sebastian, I wanted the red ball.

You can have a turn next.

[sighs]

You can play with my jump rope, Josiah.

No, thanks, Mila.

If I don't get the red ball,
I don't wanna play.

[Stillwater] At music class,
Josiah wanted the triangle.

Oh, that's shiny. I want this one.

Here, you can play these.

[Stillwater] And again, at nap time,
things didn't go his way.

I wanna sleep in the castle.

It's not your turn today,
but it will be soon.

Come, Josiah.
There's a spot here under the parachute.

No. I wanted the castle.

[Koo] He doesn't like much.

The parachute sounds like fun.
Sticks and jump rope too.

[Stillwater] Josiah missed out
on a lot of fun things

because he didn't get what he wanted.

That's why the next day he decided

that even if he couldn't get
what he wanted,

he'd still try to have fun.

Instead of the ball,
he tried the jump rope.

When the triangle was taken,

he chose the bongos and loved the sound.

And at nap time--

[Koo] Oh, I know this one.
He chose the big parachute.

It would be such fun.

[Stillwater] No. This day, as promised,

it was his turn to sleep
in the castle fort.

It's not your turn today,
but it will be soon.

[sighs]

All days are different.

Some days you get what you want.
Some days you do not.

This is very true.

I was so upset. I did not play
with my friends or drink lemonade.

I was by myself.

I could have done so much more,
but I chose no fun.

I think your friends are back
at the spaceship.

[Nolan] Whoa! Look out!

[Karl] We've been hit!

Look over there. There's another meteor.

I'm glad I chose fun.

[children in spaceship laughing]
Whoa! Whoa.

[imitating car noise]

Karl, Mom said it was time for you
to get ready for bed.

[Karl imitating truck beeping]

Karl, it's bedtime.

[groans] I want to keep playing.

[imitates car noise]

You can play with your car tomorrow.

But it's not fair.

Why do I have to go
to bed while you two get to stay up?

Well, it's because big kids
get later bedtimes.

But one day you'll be our age and you'll
get to stay up a little later too.

I don't want to be little.

I want to stay up
and do all the things you get to do.

Come on.

Fine. But tomorrow I'm gonna be big
just like you.

[yawns]

I feel bigger.

I'm big today, just like you.

Yeah.

[groaning]

Mmm. Okay, I'm gonna go play now.

Karl, wait. Now that you're big,
you can't leave your bowl at the table.

Oh, right. I knew that.

Big kids have to wash their own dishes.

You do seem a little bigger today
than you did yesterday.

and leaves off my porch.

I suppose it is.

Karl, I thought you were cleaning up.

Playing's more fun than putting away.

Wait. I'm big now, so I can stay up
and keep playing just like you.

Actually, Addy and I can't play right now
because we have homework to do.

Wait. Big kids do homework at night?
But I don't have any homework.

while I do some of mine. Is that okay?

I'm working on memorizing
area formulas right now.

The area of a rectangle
is length times width.

The area of a triangle
is one-half base times height.

The area of a circle is pi R squared.
That's it for math.

I'm still big. I fell asleep last night,
but I won't do it again.

Uh-huh. That's what big kids do.

Hello, Karl. How is it being big?

Uh, it's not that fun,
and it's a lot of work.

I thought it'd be different.

Hmm. I think I know what you mean.

In fact, it reminds me of a story.

[Stillwater] There once was a stonecutter
who worked all day on a mountain.

[sighs, groans] Another day of hard work.

[Stillwater] One day,
the stonecutter saw a prince pass by

carried by many servants.

[yawns]

Hmm. I wish I could be a prince
and be carried around all day like that.

[Stillwater] At that moment,
the stonecutter got his wish

and turned into a prince.

[chuckles] This is wonderful.

[Stillwater] The stonecutter enjoyed
this life for a while

until he tried to take a walk on his own.

His servants stopped him at once

and explained that a prince
has too many responsibilities

and must be accompanied everywhere.

[sighs] I don't want to be followed
wherever I go.

I wish I could be an eagle
and go anywhere I desired.

[Stillwater] And for a time,
the stonecutter enjoyed this life too.

But he soon grew angry
from the howling wind,

-which tossed him back and forth…
-[straining]

…in the sky.

I wish to be a mighty mountain
so no one can push me around.

[Stillwater] And again,
his wish was granted.

But though he was vast and mighty,

the stonecutter soon grew tired
of being stuck in the same place.

Then one day, he heard a sound.

It was another stonecutter,
and the mountain envied her

for being able
to not only chip away at him

but to come and go as she pleased.

It was then that the stonecutter realized

that there would always be something
he could not have.

I wish to be myself again.

[Stillwater] And for the last time,
his wish was granted.

[sighs]

What did you think of the story, Karl?

Pretty good. I liked how the stonecutter
turned into different things.

Yes. A prince, an eagle and a mountain.

But none of those made him happy.

Like how being big didn't
make me happy either.

Can you think of something
that does make you happy, Karl?

I'm happy I get to play a lot.
Michael and Addy have all those chores.

Yes, being big comes
with more responsibility.

But they don't seem to mind the chores.
I think they kind of like it.

How do you feel about being big now, Karl?

I think one day I'll be happy to be big,

but right now I'd like to be just Karl.

[chuckles]

In that case, how about an airplane ride?

-Whoo! [chuckling, imitates airplane]
-[chuckling, imitates airplane]

[grunting, chuckling]

[Michael sighs]
I wish I could be like Karl.

Running around, making up games.
You know, little.

Who says you have to be little
to do all that?

You're right.

-Can we play?
-Whoo!

Sure.

[all chuckling]
