This bento lunch is gonna be so fun.

We worked really hard.

I can't wait to show our friends.

What a special lunch.

It will be very special indeed.

When I tried my first bento,
I liked everything.

Everything, Karl?

Well, everything except the salty plums.

What were they called?

[chuckles] Umeboshi.

Right. I remember now.

[Emma] We're here.

[Heather] Hello. [chuckles]

Hi.

I'll get the tea.

Welcome to our lunch.

We're so excited you're here.

I hope you're hungry.

Wait, Heather.

You have to take off your shoes.

My shoes?

[Karl] Yeah. At Stillwater's house,
we always take our shoes off inside.

You can put yours next to mine.

Are all your shoes off?

Okay, now you can come in.

Where do we sit?

We'll sit on the floor.

Come over to the table.

Sit down just like this.

I like this lunch.

I always have to eat from a chair.

[all laugh]

What are these?

These are chopsticks.

You hold them like this
and make little alligators.

When you want to pick food up,
you make them chomp.

[chopsticks click]

[chopsticks click]

[chopsticks clatter]

Maybe I could just use my fingers instead?

[laughs]

I do that sometimes too.

But watch how good Koo is at chopsticks.

[chopsticks click]

[all laugh]

For lunch,
Stillwater helped us make a bento box.

What's a bento?

Lots of yummy foods.

Just a little bit of each.

You can try them all.

This is gonna be the best lunch ever,
you'll see.

Okay, now take off the lid.

What is this?

[stammers] Where's the lunch?

This is the lunch.

I've never seen food like this before.

Uh, do you have grilled cheese?

I usually eat that for lunch.

Don't you even wanna try it?

You might like it.

Is bento worms?

Because this looks like worms.

There are no worms here.

This is seaweed and carrots.

They're very tasty.

Seaweed?

Like from the ocean?

That sounds gross.

It's so slimy.

This one isn't slimy.

It's called a persimmon.

It's crunchy like an apple.

I like my apples red.

What do you think, Karl?

We could go make something else.

Perhaps some grilled cheese?

No! This is the lunch we made,
not grilled cheese.

Well, I'm not eating then.

I'm not either.

Tea, anyone?

Oh.

Stillwater, they say
the bento is gross and slimy

and won't even try it.

We just want food we like, Karl.

Like grilled cheese.

Or peanut butter and jelly.

-Yeah. Yeah!
-Yeah.

I love peanut butter and jelly.

It took us all day to make these.

If you don't want them, you can go home!

It seems like this bento lunch

has brought up some big feelings.

Well, we were excited
to have lunch with Karl and Koo.

Hmm.

And that excitement went away?

Yeah. When I opened up the box.

I've never seen any of these foods before.

I thought we were gonna eat
something like we have at home.

It sounds like you three

weren't expecting to see foods
that were new to you.

How did that make you feel, Karl?

Really, really mad.

Like my tummy is empty.

Not because I'm hungry.

It sounds like you were also hurt

by your friends' reactions.

Yeah.

You helped me and Koo
make the bento all morning.

And they won't even try it.

We would have tried it
if it was something we know we like.

A story might help.

Do you know of one, Uncle?

We all like stories.

Well, now that you mention it, Koo,

I do have a story I can tell.

Would you all like to hear it?

[Heather, Nolan, Karl] Yeah!

In that case…

One day while out shopping,

Jessie saw a new toy car

on display in a store window.

Whoa! Look at that car.

Its wheels spin and everything.

[Stillwater] Flashy toy cars
were not on the day's shopping list,

so the family continued on their way.

The next day,

-Jessie's grandpa was in town…
-Grandpa, look.

[Stillwater] …and Jessie
excitedly took him to see the car.

Ah. [chuckles]

[hammering]

[blows]

Mmm. There we go.

[Stillwater] A few days later,

Jessie's family went to visit Grandpa.

Jessie, I have a present for you.

Wow. Thanks, Grandpa.

[sniffles]

But it's… [sniffles]
It's not the one I wanted.

[Jessie sniffles]

[sniffles]

[door hinges creak]

[Jessie] Wow.

[sniffles]

You spent an awful lot of time
working on this car, huh, Grandpa?

[chuckles]

I wanted it to be exactly right for you.

The perfect car for my Jessie.

It has real working doors?

Yep. And that's not all.

The trunk opens
so you can hide things inside.

The steering wheel actually turns.

And you can take the wheels off
and change them.

Wow. The metal car from the toy store
can't do any of that.

No. But if you still want that one,
we can go buy it tomorrow.

No, thanks, Grandpa.

I want this one.

And not just because it can do more
than the metal one.

I want it because you made it for me.

But…

But?

Can it have a racing stripe?

[chuckles]
Oh, I knew it was missing something.

Say, why don't we paint one on together?

Jessie's grandpa tried really hard
to make a cool car.

Yeah, he put lots of work into it.

And lots of love.

Just like Koo and Karl put lots of work
and love into the bento box.

Yeah. We worked hard on these lunches.

Really, really hard.

We filled them with love.

We tried to make it special.

Every little thing.

I'm sorry, Karl.

We weren't expecting bento for lunch,
but we could've been nicer about it.

I'm sorry too.

Me too.

I'm sorry I got so mad.

I should've told you
it was gonna be a different kind of lunch.

Then maybe
you wouldn't have been so surprised.

Sometimes surprises are fun.

I tried grilled cheese once.

It was new and surprised me.

But now I like it.

Yes, grilled cheese...

and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches...

were new foods for Koo and me.

[chuckles]
We were more used to bento lunches.

Thanks for making us the bento lunches.

Now I'm excited to try it
since you worked so hard to make them.

Wow. This flower is food?

Yep. If you curl a carrot up,
it makes a flower.

This panda is really cute.

That's onigiri.

Rice and yummy seasonings.

It's my favorite snack.

Hey, this looks kinda like pasta.

[laughs]

I did it.

I'm gonna try one of these.

What are they called again?

Persimmon.

I'm gonna try the worms.

[Karl] And those are soba noodles.

[grunts, chews]

[laughs] It's like salty spaghetti.

-[all laugh]
-I like the panda onigiri.

-They're so cute.
-Try that white square.

-[all laugh]
-That's tofu.

And this purple potato is really pretty.

[all laughing]

Oh, I almost forgot.

Stillwater, is the tea ready?

It is indeed.

Would you all like to try some?

I would. As long as I don't need
chopsticks for it. [chuckles]

[all laughing]

Water balloons.

Check.

Baseball. Check.

Helmet.

Check.

Wizard dice. Check.

That's everything.

Hey, Michael.

Can you save a couple of those
for me, Addy?

They're Molly and Leo's favorite snacks.

Sure. What do you have planned
for the first day of spring break?

I've planned tons of stuff for us to do.

Baseball. Water balloons. Bike rides.

I've got everything we need right here.

-[chuckles] You always are prepared.
-[doorbell rings]

That must be them.

I hope you two are ready
to start the best spring break ever.

You just have to pick what we do first.

What's wrong?

-[both] Our parents.
-[Leo sighs]

Our parents decided to take us
to visit our uncles.

I'm sorry, Michael.
We didn't know how to tell you.

[sighs] How long are you gonna be gone?

All of spring break.

We were really looking forward
to spending the week with you.

Don't worry about me. I'll be fine.

[car horn honks]

Mom and Dad are waiting for us.

We'll see you when we get back.

Where'd Molly and Leo go?

They had to go on a trip,

and they won't be back
until the end of spring break.

Oh, that's too bad.
You had everything planned out.

Addy, would you wanna do
some of this stuff with me?

I'd love to,
but I'm supposed to go to Maya's.

And I'm late.

Oh, right.

And you're kind of blocking the door.

Whoops. [chuckles] Sorry.

We can hang out when I'm back
from my sleepover tomorrow, okay?

Molly and Leo had to leave.

Now I get to spend spring break alone.

Oh! You can come to art camp
with Koo and me.

Isn't that a little kids' camp?

Are you ready to go to art camp?

I sure am.

This is my first camp.

I'm a little nervous.

Feels like butterflies.

[Michael] Hi, Stillwater.

Michael's sad
because Molly and Leo had to leave.

Oh. I'm sorry to hear that, Michael.

I had all these great plans.

Oh. I know.

Stillwater, would you wanna
hang out with me?

We can do whatever you want.

You know I always enjoy our time together.

But after I take Karl and Koo to art camp,

I have to stop by the post office
and then pick up my groceries.

I'm afraid I won't be able
to spend time with you today.

to have fun by myself.

[sighs]

And the hero casts a fire bolt

[sighs] A pet rock for Molly.

A pet rock for Leo.

[Koo, Karl laughing]

[Karl] Michael!
You missed the best day at art camp.

I'm sure I did.

We made a painting with macaroni pasta.

It's not for eating.

Wow. Those are great.

How was your day, Michael?

I tried doing all the stuff on my list.

And how did that go?

It was terrible.

I don't know what I'm gonna do
for the rest of the week all by myself.

Oh.

Being all alone was so lonely.

Have you ever thought about the difference

between being alone and being lonely?

Not really.

Aren't they the same thing?

They don't have to be.

[inhales sharply]
Uh, would you like to hear a story?

That would be great.

[ship's horn blowing]

[Stillwater] For a long time,
Michaela had been looking forward

to taking an around-the-world trip
with her friends.

But at the last minute,

they told her they couldn't go.

[ship's horn blowing]

[Stillwater]
Michaela missed her friends a great deal,

but she did her best
to try and pass the time.

Good day. Should be a wonderful outing.

[chuckles] Yes. Yes, it's amazing. Mm-hmm.

[seagulls squawking]

[Stillwater] One day, her ship
made a stop at a beautiful island,

so some of the passengers
could enjoy a picnic on the beach.

Michaela decided to come along.

After our lunch,

we'll be returning to the ship
and the rest of our voyage.

[Stillwater] Rather than picnic
with the other passengers,

Michaela went off to explore.

[Michaela gasps] A coconut.

-Oh, I've always wanted to try one.
-[thuds]

[sips, sighs]

How delicious. [sighs]

[Stillwater]
Michaela traveled across the tiny island,

soaking in all the nature around her.

[gasps] This is beautiful.

[sighs]

[gasps]

[laughs, sighs]

This is so refreshing. [sighs]

[Stillwater] At the top of the hill,

she looked down at the shore
and saw a surprising sight.

Oh, dear.
They're packing up to leave already.

[groans]

Excuse me, Captain.

I wonder if I might make
a change to my journey.

Are you quite sure you want to stay here

all by yourself?

Most certain.

But the next ship
will not be back for another week.

Won't you be lonely until then?

I may be alone,

but I won't be lonely.

[Stillwater] Michaela realized
that having time to yourself

-can be a wonderful gift.
-[Michaela sighs]

[Stillwater]
Especially if you have something

to occupy your hands and your mind.

[Michaela humming]

I guess I can see how you don't
have to be lonely when you're alone.

The need to be around others
is something we all have.

Family.

Community.

Friends.

But sometimes,
even if just for a little while,

keeping your own company
can be a welcomed break.

[Koo, Karl laughing]

[chuckles] It was a lot quieter
without people around.

I can see why Michaela
was happy to stay on that beach alone.

I wonder if there is anything
you can think to do

that would be your tropical island.

Hmm.

Maybe tomorrow, while everyone's away,

I can put together that model rocket
I got for my birthday.

That sounds like a wonderful idea.

I keep meaning to build it,
but I'm always getting distracted.

Hey, Michael, do you want to come inside
and stack up blocks with us?

[Michael] Sure.

[Koo, Karl laugh]

We're going back to camp.

Today we paint with fingers.

Do you want to come?

Thanks for the invite,
but I'm happy staying at home.

But won't you be lonely here
all by yourself?

Just because I'm home alone
doesn't mean I'll be lonely.

I've got lots to do back here.

All right. Time to get to work.

[knocking]

Hey, Addy. Are you home already?

What do you mean? I've been gone all day.

Oh, wow.
I didn't realize it was that late.

You finally built your rocket.

Took all day, but it was worth it.

Well, now that Karl and I are back,
do you wanna play a board game?

There's still a bit of spring break left
if you want to have some fun with us.

Actually, I think I wanna stay
on my island a little longer.

Okay. [chuckles]
