successful ones
that we have seen.

is so fantastic.

was successful for me,

I don’t still have

an idea of what your style is.

NINA: I didn’t come here
to see a costume.

Kind of brought
a kitsch element.

We really expect more from you.

Hi, designers. I’m Michelle,
and at 39 years old,

I’m a two-time
breast cancer survivor.

My family was
my main inspiration

for being a warrior.

My daughter was just over one
when I was last diagnosed.

Being around for them--
that is why I fight.

MARGARITA:
My grandmother had

breast cancer, and it’s just...

it puts everything
into perspective.

Beyond the emotions
of, like, Project Runway.

This is on another level.

Hi. I’m Tawana.

I’ve been a survivor
for ten months now,

and what inspired me to fight
is my husband,

my family and grandchildren.

KENYA:
I’ve had several friends

who have had breast cancer.

Everyone can say

that they know or personally

have had a family member
who’s been affected.

I want to inspire other women
that have this disease.

You are certainly warrior women
in the battle.

And, designers,
that is our point of departure

for this challenge.

You are to create
a high-fashion editorial look

inspired by warrior women.

How you interpret that
is completely up to you.

So, to get you in the mood
for this challenge,

we are going to have you engage

-in a boxing boot camp.

KENTARO: I have nothing
against boxing, but, like,

I don’t like to hit people.

MAN:

TIM: Well, it’s very evident
that some of you

some built-up aggression,

so I’m glad you had
an opportunity to get it out.

You will have 30 minutes
to sketch.

Then we’re going off to Mood,
where you’ll have

a budget of $250.

is your Avon challenge,

the makeup look you will create
for your models,

it’s going to be very,
very important.

Cancer is like chaos, right?

Your whole life is in shambles.

What I’m sketching is like this.

And then I’m doing this, like,

corset to kind of like
pull it all in together.

It’s like love, family,
a support team.

Kind of, like,
keep it all together.

my point of view is.

He feels like he doesn’t know.

This tomorrow.

So I feel like this garment

is really gonna do that for me.

I’m just trying to figure out
whether I just, like,

take it in on the side or, like,
do, like, a box pleat here.

I want to get the pant mostly--

if not completely--
finished tonight.

This drop crotch is something

that I’m very comfortable with

and that I wear a lot,

so I’m not worried
about it at all.

I think this is better.
It looks like I have huge p*nis.

Margarita’s looks bad.

their looks

are very, very similar.

It’s wacky, but it’s impeccable.

It’s day two.

The challenge is to create

a high-fashion editorial look

inspired by women warriors

that have been battling
breast cancer.

It’s pretty close to my heart.

So I’m feeling

really emotional.

It looks good. Beautiful.

I want to have it
kind of come out of here.

If you want to do here,
you can tie it.

BRANDON: I want to keep
pumping out fresh silhouettes,

playing with form and shape.

It’s so similar to...

-BRANDON: Not even close.
-KENTARO: It’s okay.

No, it’s completely different.

Yeah, he has a hoodie
and a turtleneck,

and-and I have
a hoodie and turtleneck,

but they’re going
in completely different ways.

-Are you mad I did this?

I mean, it happened to be,
you know?

KENYA: The brothers,
Brandon and Kentaro,

their looks are very,
very similar.

Maybe they really are brothers.

KENYA: I’m thinking
of a woman standing

with her hands on her hips,
and so much attention

is drawn to the shoulders.

So I’ve cut out
the exaggerated petals.

I wanted, like,
a strong shoulder.

I’m still not 100%
on the direction that I’m going,

but at least I’m working
on something.

Well, I kind of want
to do this one,

but I wanted
to have this one inside

and black on top of this one,

-but this started to look like
outer instead of... -Mm-hmm.

-Yeah, and it... kind of it is.

I will also say

make certain you don’t have
too many competing ideas.

You want it to be...
all of a... of a single piece...

-I agree.
-...as opposed to...

So, when I thought warrior,
I was thinking nomadic warrior.

Androgynous kind of,
but... again me, so...

I’m going with, like,
this really elongated crotch.

You’ll be able to see
the underneath pant, and then

just trying to figure out
the top right now,

but it’s gonna be the same play
on the pink and the brown.

Since this is so clearly
your signature as a designer,

do you feel you’re doing enough

to push this to a point
where the judges will feel

it’s beyond what
they’ve seen from you?

Um...

Are you taking
that extra step to say,

"I need to win this"?

No, I hear what you’re saying.
I do.

Okay, Kenya. What’s going on?

I just got, like,
a creative black space.

And in the meantime,
I’m just... I’m just sewing.

[chuckling]: I’m just sewing,
and I’m just sewing,

and... you know.

What’s guiding you towards this?

This is like the warrior aspect.

I wanted to do, like,
a ton of these

and have it, like, really big
and play off the shoulders.

-I’m with you.
-And, you know, be like,

you know, "I am woman."

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
In fact, I would suggest

that the entire top
just be these.

-Yeah.
-And lots more of them.

I think I agree with that.

If I can remove myself
out of the way and allow myself

to be great,

there is no stopping me.

And how’s Margarita?

It’s very emotional.

Why is this so emotional
for you?

You know, it’s just
a tough thing, you know?

-It affects all of us.
-It happens to all of us.

I think it’s much more emotional
for a woman.

-It has to be.
-Yeah.

It really got to me,
so instantly

I knew I wanted to...

[sighs] ...capture that chaos
and that, you know,

awful despair
and kind of contain it.

The organza is all this
crazy darkness, and...

with that, I wanted to do,
you know, a fitted corset.

So, essentially,
it will look like this.

How do you feel the gold works
with the red?

AYANA:
Margarita’s look,

it’s very literal.

It just looks bad.

I’m struggling with that, too.

MARGARITA: It’s a really
scary time to take a risk

and do something crazy and big.

I don’t want to go home.

and power woman corset
made out of this gold.

HECTOR: The eyes-- let’s do
a smoky eye with the mango;

and the Spellbound
that is a little bit dark;

and to have also
a little bit of gold.

So we do a combination
of these two.

So, I’m thinking about a warrior

that’s, like, nomadic,
kind of androgynous.

Mostly the eyes,

Desert Sunset Quad combination

with all these colors
in the eyes.

BRANDON:
It’s perfect. Beautiful.

navy blue, like, smoky eye.

k*ll her in the mascara.

-You know what I’m saying?

When you’re a woman of size,
I feel like

you have more to prove, uh,
when you get dressed.

I think that, you know,
it’s easy for a size two

to throw on a tank
and some jeans, and she’s done,

but if a woman who is a size 18

does the same thing, she has
to be more polished, so...

I feel like I have
to represent, in a sense.

The look reminds me

kind of like a real-life

In, like, the warrior sense.

So I just need to,

Christina’s body really well.

It’s strong.
The bottom is just so tailored.

And then the top is very fun.

I feel like it’s unexpected.

It definitely represents
what I feel is a warrior woman.

I love the fact that this look
came together.

It’s very powerful, in my eyes.

I think the gold and the red
work well together.

I am just beyond thrilled.

very majestic and strong.

And she looks very modern,
so that’s what I wanted.

I feel good about it.

My look totally

represents who I am
as a designer.

I put tons and tons of petals
on the tops of the shoulders,

and it represents what we carry
on our shoulders

every single day as women.

My ideal woman
would totally wear this.

I would wear this, and...
it’s beautiful.

This look was very much inspired

by the lovely ladies,
um, that we met.

A lot of them suffer
from breast cancer, so...

this is what I came up with
in honor of these warrior women.

I love the way Liris
looks today.

I really think her curves,
everything,

and your inspiration.

I knew I wanted to kind of do,

like, this nomadic kind
of warrior,

and then I found
these two colors

that I thought looked
really quite beautiful,

and then it reminded me
of, like,

the ice cream sandwich
kind of thing.

But it kind of worked
in a weird way.

But, as I was making it,
it kind of took on this, like,

ninja-esque vibe.
And then, yeah,

I played with, like,
the drop crotch

and this kind of angled cut
with the pop of pant, and...

and this is my look.

It is out there.

But I do feel like you are...

creating something
completely new.

There’s a niche for this,
because it’s kind of feminine,

it’s masculine at the same time.

I could have maybe done
without the baby bonnet.

I kind of want to give her
a little bottle.

But then again, it’s the runway,
so you are forgiven in a way

because it gives it
a little extra something.

I agree the bonnet
might be a little weird.

-Can we see her without
the bonnet? -Of course.

-RACHEL: No, I love the bonnet.
-HEIDI: It is a baby bonnet.

-I like the bonnet, too.
-I love the bonnet.

It’s like armor in a way.

It feels like a modern take
on a helmet.

And a feminine take on a helmet.
I really love that about it.

But it looks amazing down.

You played with a lot
of elements,

and they all work.

And, you know, normally,
I don’t like

what we would call--

or we have called--
"poofy pants,"

but I think, of all of the pants

that I’ve seen on this show,
by far, this is, like...

from the back and stuff,
it’s really cool how it’s cut.

Margarita, tell us about
your look and your inspiration.

When I walked
into the boxing ring,

I was kind of taken aback
when I saw the ladies.

And it was very personal to me,
their stories.

You know, when you hear the news
of disease like that,

that can be terminal,
it’s so chaotic.

So I wanted to contain the chaos
with this sort of armor.

Red is my power color,
so I wanted to put her

in something that I felt
really strongly about.

And we were said
that it was editorial,

I picture her in the ring,
like tough but soft,

so I wanted to kind of convey
that story.

So, I think you have some

really nice draping
on the bottom of this.

I think that, in the end,

somehow the containment
of the corset

did almost the opposite
of what you were intending.

It feels more clubby than armor.

I like the concept
of the controlled chaos.

The problem is--

she looks like she’s stuffed
in there. Right?

So it’s like stuffed chaos.

And, to be honest with you,

this looks very much
like a costume.

It’s a cliché idea that you’re
gonna put a metallic corset,

and that’s going
to empower the look.

Kentaro, tell us about your look
and your inspiration.

I felt like I wanted
a very strong

and a majestic
and warrior-like lady,

so, like, I wanted to make
something very royal-like,

Japanese samurai-like look.

I can’t see her body at all,

and I wish I could a little bit.

I see your inspiration,
and from here,

it’s hard for me
to see some of the details.

NINA:
I had great hopes for you

because I did see you
make some very...

bold changes in your aesthetic.

But you’re reverting back
to what you’re comfortable with.

I’m concerned
about an objective,

in-process editing eye.

I don’t have a problem
with all-black looks.

I don’t think
it’s the most exciting,

but then you have to play
with texture

-or dimension.
-Yes. Yeah.

I had a textured sweater
on the top, but...

at the end, it just
didn’t fit, so...

-Coulda, woulda, shoulda.
-Yeah.

-Yeah. Of course, I mean.

Well, we had a sketch
at the boxing gym,

in Japanese culture,

So, my inspiration stems
from the women in my family.

My mom has eight girls,
so it’s a lot of us.

-There’s a lot of woman power.

I chose a play on a power suit.

I wanted it to be strong
but not hard.

And then also to capture
the editorial feeling,

I wanted to create something

that was picturesque
from all angles.

It’s wacky, but it’s impeccable.

When she walked down that runway
and I saw how every stripe

matched on the inside
of the leg...

I feel like, a lot of times,

as a woman, you feel like

you have power
when you show some skin,

you show either some legs
or some cleavage.

She is showing none of that,

and she looks so powerful
and strong

and sexy without showing
any skin at all.

So much going on,
and you could be like,

"Wow, it’s too busy,"
but it’s not.

It was very nice
to see you evolve.

I know you do a lot of gowns.

They’re very elegant,
so to see you do pants

and play with the masculine
and the feminine so well,
