the next chapters

Somebody's getting a makeover.

To help inspire you to start

a fresh personal challenge,
we've brought

some very special people
who are starting

a new chapter in their lives.

Ooh.

-Tell us more.

Oh, my... [laughing]

CORNELIUS:
Mommy!

-WOMAN: I missed you.
-LAURENCE: I miss you, too.

[Erin screams]

That's my daughter.

Hi.

NATHALIA:
When I see my mom,

I, like, couldn't believe it.
I was like, "Oh, my God."

-I am so proud of you.
-I'm trying, you know.

-You better tear it up here.
-I'm trying.

-Lauren.
-Hey! -[both scream]

DEXTER: Lauren-- she has been
my homie for, like, 14 years.

And seeing her makes any drama

that happened,
all the bull [bleep]

just go out the window.

I didn't think
I was gonna cry again.

I am not

the most emotional person,
but right now,

I'm just so proud

I often joke with her

the one that gave birth to her.

I was like, "I'm not gonna cry

I stayed inside of her
for an extra month,

and I pooped in her,
so... we have a special bond.

To be here, for me,
is absolutely surreal.

touch-- it's an amazing feeling.

ANTONIO:
I'm at a loss for words and

can't even describe
how I'm feeling.

MAH-JING: With me and my mom,
I don't know what happened, but

there's so much
in-between us.

We don't talk a lot.

[sniffles]

This is crazy.

Wow! Yes.

Well, these were
emotional reunions.

We have mothers, we have
friends, and we have family.

So for this challenge,
these very special individuals

will serve as your clients.

-CORNELIUS: Wow.
-Oh.

You are to consult with them
and create a new look

for their next chapter. Find out
what they see themselves

doing in their lives,
and create a fitting look.

And I am titillated
about this next part.

Hmm.

-Barbara?
-We at AARP want to help you

begin your next chapter,
so the designer

who creates the winning look

is going to receive $25,000.

Wow.

BARBARA:
But wait. Because we're so

excited about your clients'
inspiring stories,

the winning client will also

receive $25,000.

-What? Really?

her future
and her next adventure.

-RIK: Thank you.

of my experience.

I'm always in the background
at your shows at the studio.

My mom is underground
hip-hop superstar Bahamadia.

She's been nominated
for several different awards.

I mean, she's the reason why
I'm pursuing my dreams.

And now,

my mother's next chapter
is starting her record label

and signing talent

and being a-a bigger voice
for women in hip-hop.

-What do you have in mind?
-You know Japanese origami.

It feels like the inside of me
is folded into now who...

-who you're seeing now.
-Well, yeah.

So what's the inspiration?

As a future goal, you know,

that I want to open up,
you know, French shops.

-Import to make the French
culture here. -That's good.

Are you excited
about the new chapter

-in your life?
-Yes, I am.

You know, I went back
to school after 40 years.

It's been hard, but I have to.

RIK: As a single parent, she
sacrificed her own education--

you know, she didn't go to
college-- just to raise us.

I know my mom's new chapter
is going back

to university trying
to get her bachelor's degree

so she can get
that management position

that she's always wanted
and yearned for.

-You know, as a single mom...
-Mm-hmm.

...taking care of all of us.
[crying]

I appreciate everything that
you've done. You've helped me

-so much, so... [sniffles]
-Well...

I know what I'm gonna do
with the $25,000. Pay you back.

I owe my mom lots of money
for my student loans,

or the loft and the studio

that I live in and work in.
It would mean

everything
to win this challenge.

ROBERI:
Well, I think we have a very

-solid case for new beginnings.
-Exactly. Uh-huh.

ROBERI:
We've been through a lot.

Back in Caracas, we used

to work together,

and spend a lot
of time together.

But then,
she had to flee the country

a year and a half ago.

And right now,
she's living in Panama.

What are you moving forward
into? Tell me, like...

-I mean, I kind of know.
-I want to move forward

into launching my,
the lifestyle e-commerce app.

Is any of this, like,
too much for you

-or do you think you want--?
-No. I love it.

-You said you wanted, like,
leather... -I want some leather.

-Leather.
-Definitely want some leather.

CORNELIUS: My mother really did
work hard to raise me,

and now she wants
to go traveling, and she wants

something that's bold
and very edgy.

You better work this, too.
I've got a little tight.

I know. I know.

So, like, a pea coat,
but, like, a burgundy.

Or like... [speaking Spanish]

Uh-huh. Burgundy.

Her and my dad are, like,
traveling to Europe, so,

they're gonna be in,
like, all these, like,

beautiful, fancy cities
in the spring.

-A little bellbottom, but
not-not too crazy. -Uh, yeah.

I want to do something
that, like, makes you

pop and, like,
stand out in Utah.

You're not gonna make me
a polygamous dress.

No and then I'm thinking--

With an apron.

Actually, so I'm thinking,
like, a bib like this,

and, like, a sleeve of mutton.

ERIN: What is comfortable for my
mom is, like, being beautiful,

but, like, not standing out,
like, too much.

So, sexy-modest
is what we're going for.

It's the name
of a store in Utah.

[laughs]

It can be anything.
It can be of the wedding that

I'm gonna have to go to.
I have, um, my birthday.

I'm doing the graduation thing
at the school for the kids.

I have to look nice for that.

Or the other thing is to go out

to try different restaurants
and eat gourmet food

-in San Francisco.
-You just want to eat?

I love eating.
I love food.

She's all over the place.

And she's not really giving me

any clear idea.

-Um... -I can tell right now,

This challenge

is about dressing

one of your loved ones

for a new chapter
on their lives.

For Suky-- she really loves
bold prints,

visually and tactile texture.

JENNI: [laughs] You got to work
those triceps out.

Losing my mind.

JENNI: I start designing
at Mood clearly 'cause

I have a really
indecisive client.

-Can I get a yard of this?
-I'm kind of just

picking up things that I feel
like embody my mom.

I am envisioning
a pair of pants.

I'm gonna layer it
with a shirt,

and I'm gonna make
a really cool sweater

with some design details on it.

Could I also do
another yard of this?

Designers, time is up.

My mom's gonna be, like, "Why

CORNELIUS:
These plenty of times

when I should have taught
my mother how to sew.

JENNI:
By the end of the night,

I have two T-shirt options, and
then the sweater that I made.

So I'm feeling
really good about

everything
that I've accomplished today.

How did you channel
what your mother wants?

What I wanted
to do was make it

casual but a little bit
sportswear.

For the jacket, I wanted
to almost make her pop

with this burnt orange.
I have this really nice...

rope material. She wanted,

like, an asymmetrical skirt.

How are you feeling about it?

-I feel good about it.
-Excellent.

for your mom? -She loves

Japanese street style
and hip-hop culture.

-Mm-hmm. -So I wanted
to bring that into

a pair slightly
drop crotch pants in denim.

And then we go on
to this really cool jacket.

She walk out,
and then she snaps it

-and that lays down.
-Like an unveiling.

Like an unveiling
of who she is now.

-This is a really ambitious
construction project. -Mm-hmm.

And I just want you
to get going.

MAH-JING: I just need
to make sure that

that jacket is on point.

I've created her
this sporty look

with kind of a pullover sweater.

And then I'm pairing it
with this kind of funky trouser.

TIM: I just find
it's a little confusing.

JENNI:
Today I have

two critiques.
One with Tim, and one

with my mom, so,
at the end of the day,

this challenge is to make
something for the client,

my mom.

So, what did the two of you
decide to do?

We came up with a, um,

two-piece tailored jacket
and a pants.

-Let me ask.
-Mm-hmm.

Could Victoria go out and buy
this jacket right now?

When it's finished, no.

This is a recurring
conversation

me and Tim have all the time.

He just has to trust me.

TIM:
So what's your next chapter?

-Year and a half ago,
I moved to Panama. -Ah.

Starting my life again there
as a graphic designer.

-TIM: This is a dress, Roberi?
-This is the dress, and I want

to accentuated the cut
with very fine detail

-of piping.
-Oh.

I want to have
a subtle balance of color.

I guess the question
I want to ask is,

are you over-designing this?

Hmm. That's...
that's a question.

-What are you designing for
your mother? -So she wants

separates that she can mix and
match with her current wardrobe.

I'm creating a jacket
out of this wool and leather

and a wide-leg pant.

This leather is so strong
and graphic and geometric.

The jacket, it's got to be
superbly ex*cuted.

Okay.

So, what did you
and your mom talk about?

My mom got this new job.
At first, I was like,

"Oh, I'll make an outfit for her
to wear to work."

But she's gonna have to wear
lab coats some of the time.

Oh, so this is ancillary to work
and about a new lifestyle.

-Yeah, just being able to, like,
go out and do things. -Okay.

-So that's, like, you know...
-What have you done?

I love this idea
of, like, change,

-how a caterpillar goes into
a cocoon and then... -Mm-hmm.

...comes out, and it's, like,
this beautiful, colorful thing.

So I wanted to create,
like, a cocoon coat.

So then, like, when
she comes out, she can, like,

take it off, like,
kind of coming out of a shell

and, like, blossoming.

Whitney, what was
your first response to it?

-I loved it.
-My response was, "Eesh!"

I feel really good about it.

-Okay, well...
-I feel very strong about it.

What did you create for Lauren?

DEXTER:
A sweater dress.

I did, like, interesting boning

that kind of, like,
plays with shapes.

And I have--
got all these buttons,

and I was gonna take this,

and then I tie them off

so they look like
they're buttons

in the fabric.

TIM:
You have to Dexter-ize it.

I mean, otherwise
it's a cut and sew knit

that you put some boning in.

-Okay.
-I'm gonna leave you all.

I'm currently going to
a university.

And I will be obtaining
my bachelor's degree

in organizational management.

I haven't worn a dress
in a long time,

so I just remember seeing

I wanted to incorporate

this white stitching

in her dress.

This is definitely gonna be
a really good present

to give back to her.

JENNI: I'm kind of stressing
over these pants because

I can't just double check
with the dress form

if they're really gonna
fit her.

And I know in the morning
I'm only gonna have, like,

barely an hour to get
the fit right.

I just hope that
the [bleep] pants fit her.

These pants don't fit her then,

you know, the whole outfit
is kind of a bust.

and the pants are wide-leg.

your client's next chapter

and your look.

She is my best friend, Suky,

and right now she's living
in Panama City.

She's starting her new studio.
She's a graphic designer.

And I wanted to make
a very special piece

for a c*ck party
to celebrate, maybe,

a drink or a c*ck
with friends

and maybe clients.

This was one of my favorites.

I love it. I can tell that
you feel really good in it.

I love how it makes
your eyes pop.

I think the top is so sweet

with the V-neck and I honestly
love the silhouette.

I don't think this
could fit any better.

-So two thumbs up.

That is such a beautiful
talent that you have

to see which pieces
to choose,

and to bring something together
that has a lot of clarity

and a lot of sophistication,
but is in no way boring.

The silhouette is so pretty.

Her neckline is beautiful.

It really kind of
frames her face

Everything has been carefully
thought of and planned.

And it suits her beautifully.

Um, my mom's
a nurse practitioner,

and got a full-time job working
at a university, um, in Utah.

And I also love this idea
in the word "change."

So I was thinking about how a
caterpillar goes into a cocoon,

and when it opens,
it comes out and it's, like,

beautiful and colorful,
so that's kind of what

I wanted to do
is that transition

on the runway of coming out.

Can you take the coat off
for one second?

To me, it's a winter coat

with kind of a summer look
underneath.

And I think it's fighting.

I think it is the color,
the lace.

I don't know,
I wish she would have been

in a cool suit or something.

It doesn't really suit her.

I wish that you spent more time
on the dress because

the hem needs to be fixed,

the stitching could be
a little better on the bottom.

It's just a little
up and down,

and I think it could be
a lot cleaner.

And your mom is so hot, like,

you could've done a little
better with the proportions.

But instead you just went
with two stories

that, I think,
don't go together.

Rik, tell us about
your client's next chapter

and what you created for her.

My mom's next chapter is,
um, she just recently went back

to university to get
her bachelor's degree,

so I just kind of wanted
something very professional.

And the stitching
that I created is just, um,

something that kind of
goes back to our heritage

with, like, the mariachi
embroidering and the horse hair.

So I knew I wanted
to incorporate that.

And then I also put
just like a little...

pop of a heart in there,
you know.

-Oh, that's adorable!
-For all the love that went

It means that she can enter
many different situations,

feel poised, present herself.

This is my mom, Amanda.

She is a preschool director,

so I wanted to
create something for her

that she can wear to work.

And then I wanted her also
to be able to wear

something, you know,
casually out.

So that was kind of the deal,
and I wanted

to give her something
comfortable

so she can easily
move around in.

I hate to say it,
but in my eyes,

this was probably one of
the worst looks

-on the runway today.
-Okay.

To me, it looks borderline
sloppy.

What throws me off here

is a frumpy T-shirt
underneath.

Then it feels like
she kind of tried

-to throw her outfit together.
-Mm-hmm.

Didn't care, but cared.

I feel like
you're more powerful than that.

NINA:
If I'm taking my kids

to the preschool
to meet the director,

I'm gonna be very confused,
to be honest.

If she walks in,

wearing, like,
a beaded Chanel sweater,

-and these pants.
-ZAC: The pants...

-I don't take them seriously.
-NINA: No.

The fit is really distracting.

I would honestly, like, wonder
what it would look like

if the pants were constructed
really well, and the T-shirt

-was constructed really well,
because... -Okay.

then I would want
to take another look and see it.

My mother is
in the music industry,

and her next chapter in life
is starting her record label.

I wanted her to feel strong,

confident.
She's a big fan of origami,

she wanted to feel like she
was a superhero and empowered,

and I tried my best

to add that to her
and give her this look.

NINA:

-when you walked out there,
you look badass. -Yeah.

-NINA: You really did
look like... -Thank you.

...wow, who is this
powerful woman,

who owns it?

You seem to be a very
interesting woman

and your clothes reflect that.

I think your son

-really did a great job.

it immediately said to me

that she's gonna be

So I wanted to give her

three pieces so she could
mix and match.

She can wear this jacket
with many different things.

I did a pocket detail, so
she could wear it in the airport

and put her passport in here

and everything that she needs.

NINA:
Nathalia.

I do think that this idea

of a coat was a good idea

for a travel piece.

But I think the proportions

are overwhelming for her.

It drowns her.

She needs something
a little more tailored.

HEIDI: I have to say,
I didn't love this look,

for the same reasons;
she's totally being swallowed

by the clothes.
Because she is petite,

the pants are so big,
the jacket is so big,

and on top of that,
the jacket also looks very hard.

It doesn't look
very comfortable.

It looks like
you can't bend your arms,

like, the leather is very stiff.

I'm a little disappointed.
