and take, like,
a little mental break from it.

Hello, designers. We are
so happy to have you here.

And I'm thrilled
to introduce you

to our brand-new,
multidimensional experience,

Skull Island: Reign of Kong.

-Nice.

And, designers, the jungle
on Skull Island reminds me

of another jungle,
the urban jungle.

So, for this challenge,
you will use your expedition

through Skull Island

as inspiration to create
streetwear looks

for the urban jungle: the city!

So one jungle inspires another.

CORNELIUS: Streetwear is not
something that I do

on an everyday basis,
like some other designers,

but it is something
that I see all the time.

JENNI: Streetwear is, like,
the epitome of my existence,

so hopefully
I'm gonna crush this.

I don't know. I mean, either
way, I'm here next week, guys.

I have immunity.

All right, designers.
You're off to Skull Island.

-Yes! -Thank you, Mike!

ERIN: Because I was in the
bottom in the last challenge,

I definitely was feeling, like,
really going down a low point,

but I'm feeling
really rejuvenated.

[squealing]

Oh, my God!

[hissing]

Take cover!

-[screams]
-[shouting]

-Things are jumping out at me.
-[roaring]

-[screaming]
-[growling]

You have all these freakin'
dinosaurs coming at you.

-[roaring]
-[screaming]

And they're, like,
right up at your face.

MAH-JING:
So I see Kate. She's strong.

She's badass. And I say,
"Hey, I would design for her."

Oh, no!

There's this heroine,
the main character,

and she is in,
like, cargo pants.

And I'm like,
"Okay, cargo, cargo."

There's my first inspiration.

I got some cargo.

[low growling]

-[roaring]
-[screaming]

[cheering]

-That was awesome!
-Whoa. -Whew!

-Pretty.
-Tutti frutti.

How was the ride?
Pretty intense, right?

-It was amazing.
-Yeah.

-NATHALIA: So fun.

we thought you deserved
a beautiful, relaxing place

-to help your creativity flow.
-MIKE: And as you can see,

we strive to create
these kind of,

uh, wide variety of experiences.

And right now, we're working
on our latest, immersive

water theme park, Volcano Bay,

here at
the Universal Orlando Resort,

the perfect
Pacific island paradise.

TIM:

to our very own concrete jungle,

and you have one day
for this challenge.

NATHALIA: Last challenge
sucked really hard

because I was in the bottom,
but I feel

really confident
about this challenge.

I do street style myself.

in the Skull Island ride.

I love creating
dolman sleeve jackets.

A dolman sleeve
is like a bat sleeve.

Like, you know, you can
kind of fly away with it.

LAURENCE:
Streetwear is more, like,

how you wear your clothes

and how you swag it.

I come up with this

cute little outfit:
a pair of drop crotch pants

and just, like, a b*mber jacket

with poofy arms,
kind of look like

one of the little creature
that was spitting water at us

in-in the ride. [chuckles]

Come on, everyone. Off we go!

Ow, [bleep]!

BRIK:
I have my eye out for a stripe,

because I want to make
a striped pant.

Can I do
one and a half yards, please?

I also want to play with
geometric shapes.

My eye catches
this geometric motif,

and it reminds me of

that tribal aspect
of Skull Island.

-You want these three, for sure?
-Yes.

LAURENCE:
For this b*mber jacket,

I'm trying to stay away
from leather,

but it's impossible.

People call me
a leather designer,

which I don't think I am.

It's just that that's what
people choose to remember.

Laurence, weren't you so happy

when King Kong just saved us
out of nowhere?

-LAURENCE: He's very sexy.

-You're doing your pants first,
Brik? -Yeah.

BRIK:
I'm making a pair of pants,

which I haven't made since
the first two challenges

when I got really grilled for
[chuckles]

making pants
that were weird with tops.

I feel like this is
definitely the time

to... to do it right.

Oh, [bleep].

LAURENCE:
My first thing

is to start with, um,
the most difficult piece,

which is the jacket.

I'm not inventing a new jacket.
It's just how you do it.

It's just fabric
that you use and, uh,

putting your signature in it

and just playing with details.

I don't know.

JENNI: I feel like Laurence
is just using one technique

and spreading it out

amongst different looks.

So it's, like, borderline

one-trick pony.

DEXTER: Now I just have to
remember how to pattern

cargo pockets,
but I'm pretty good at them.

Oh, it's such a tough thing.

Maybe I should have added
the half, actually.

CORNELIUS: Dexter is
freaking out a little bit.

Oh, no,
but then I have this, too.

-He's all over the place.
-Stuck between these two greens.

[sighs]:
Ooh.

CORNELIUS:
You know he's going home next.

ERIN:
It's a really dope print.

It's, like, so reptile. Yeah.

RIK:
It looks like one of those worms

that were, like,
jumping out at us on the ride.

-Totally. That's awesome.
-ERIN: For this challenge,

we're supposed to take
the inspiration from the ride,

Skull Island: Reign of Kong,
and turn that into, like,

a streetwear look
for the urban jungle.

Why I am surprised to find
a quiet workroom?

-How is everyone?
-DESIGNERS: Good.

Quietly good. All right.
Let's see what you're doing.

How's Cornelius?

Good. Okay.

So, what I wanted to create

-was a drop crotch pant...
-Okay.

...which is going to be
mixed media.

So it's gonna be this denim
and then this denim,

like, under it,
and then for the top,

I wanted to create, like,
a little tank top like this.

-Very simplistic.
-Okay.

I'm playing with
a pleating technique.

Just make certain
it doesn't go from street

to a Broadway version
of street.

-Thank you.
-Thank you, Cornelius.

DEXTER: Basically, I wanted
to do, like, sort of like

the heroine of the movie,
who, you know, obviously,

it's more streetwear, but she
kind of gets a little sucked

more into the jungle life
because she's there for so long.

And so I wanted to come up with
a really nice cargo short,

and then I wanted to do, like,
a jacket with a mandarin collar.

I have these shoulders,
and I was gonna

build these little circles.

They'll be about,
like, this big.

TIM:
Here's my conundrum:

On the one hand,
I want to encourage you

to just run with this exactly
as you're describing it to me.

On the other hand, based on

our last experience
with the judges,

-and not just you, but this room
writ large... -Mm-hmm.

...is there a risk
that they're gonna say,

"Dexter, it's too costumey"?

I just, I feel like, I feel like

they need to see me
off the grid.

And it would bum me out
if they send me home,

but it would bum me out more
if I did something that

-didn't feel like me.
-Right. If you're gonna go home,

you should go home
for something that you love.

And just do it.

If there were ever
a challenge that gives you

-a license to do that,
it's this one. -[chuckles]

-Dexter, 1,000%.
-[sighs]

-Okay. I'm going for it.

Brik, how are you
handling streetwear?

I think I've got my hands on it.

I was going for something that,
textile-wise,

that kind of emulated the...

-like, 4D, 3D experience
of the ride. -Mm-hmm.

And I loved how this print

had that sort of zebra feel,
but without being zebra.

And then for the top,
I've bought this vinyl.

Kind of picks up
on that whole gorilla,

-muscular structure...
-Yeah.

...but taking it to
a geometric place.

This has huge potential
for being a knockout.

[quietly]:

Underneath the jacket,
I'm going to make

a shirt with pleat
in this fabric.

Streetwear has more of an edge.

Let the-the luster of this
tarnish a bit.

-Right. -So it doesn't look
so polished.

-I'm taking kind of a spin
on boxier silhouettes. -Okay.

My customers back at home,

they would want to purchase
this top at this height.

-Do it.
-And then have their

-pants showing like this.
-Do it.

-Do you.
-Okay.

I was thinking of more of, like,
this punk rocker.

Like a classic denim vest or
jacket with the sleeves cut off.

I could even shorten it maybe
just a little bit more,

so it's not so...

-It's better already.
-Yeah.

Erin, I'm rapt!
What are you doing?

I'm going back to my-my... me.

-Where I like to mess with...
-Well, you can do it now.

-You stepped away.

I look at this and I see

a 21st century
fashion interpretation

-of a Rousseau painting.
-Oh.

You know, peering through
all that foliage.

Yeah, I definitely
took the foliage as,

like, the main inspiration.

I just don't want you to be
derailed tomorrow morning.

-Okay. Yeah. I can do that.
-That's all.

-Because look at all this work.
-Yeah, definitely.

Tim, he's obviously concerned
about time, which he should be,

but if I can really
pull off these shorts

the way that my brain is, like,
envisioning it,

definitely gonna be
in the top three.

How are you handling this
urban streetwear challenge?

Pretty well.
I mean, like, I usually design,

like, streetwear,
so I'm excited for it.

So, I'm going with, um,
a dolman sleeve jacket.

It's so heavy.
It's not gonna move a lot.

I'm just not getting
the streetwear feel.

I just want you to take it
out of the 19th century

and bring it into the 21st.

Maybe I could make it
a little shorter.

The pant will have
more of an impact.

-And it will show
the pants more. -Yeah.

'Cause I am doing patch pockets
here, patch pockets here.

TIM: Which we won't even see
unless she removes this.

Exactly.
That's a good point.

NATHALIA: So I decide
to scrap the faux fur,

and then I decide
to just finish my jacket.

And I'm definitely
gonna crop it,

because he is right,

it does look more chic cropped.

So I-I was inspired by

the whole, like,
safari aspect, urban jungle.

So I thought a really cool
strapless dress.

I wanted to do--
play with, like,

this netting that I found

and overlay it
over top of the denim.

I think the gold with the denim
is very street.

This is a different critique
than we had the last time.

I know.

So I'm making a, um,
b*mber-inspired dinosaur jacket.

-Which is this one.
-[Tim laughs]

And, uh, I have, uh,

like, a safari, um,
drop crotch pants.

Oh, you're using khaki.

How low do you see
the drop crotch being?

Kind of like the one I have on
right now.

-Oh, okay.
-Not too low.

It's beautifully done.
It's beautifully constructed.

I have every confidence
that the pants will be the same.

DEXTER: Laurence's leather
jacket, it's so perfect.

Laurence is just queen
of the leather. It's good!

to make sure
that they don't, uh,

battle one another too much.

-so I'll have the pants

I really like her texture.

We do something where we have,
like, a really cool,

-large, graphic braid

my look is solid.

It's totally streetwear, but
it's still innovative and new.

that is very different

from what
everyone else has done.

And it's either gonna
resonate in a good way

or a bad way with the judges.

I'm feeling like

I really hit the nail
on the head with this one.

RIK: I'm extremely happy
with my garment.

I did step out of the box.
It definitely represents

my rock, kind of chola vibe.

That looks really good.

NATHALIA: I'm so happy
that it looks like my vision,

that it's reading well.

It looks really chic
and amazing.

I got this.

I love your jacket.

LAURENCE: I'm loving it,
except I'm bothered

with the-the crotch area.

ROBERI: It has a little bit
of menswear.

It has a little bit
of fluidity.

It has color. It has texture.

It's street style,
but it's very refined,

and I'm very happy
with the result.

MAH-JING: I think my model
looks extremely sexy,

chic, sophisticated-- the exact
way I want her to look.

I think I'm going to be
in the top.

ERIN:
It doesn't look terrible,

but if there was more time,
then it could have been better.

I'm really just hoping
that I'm safe.

Ooh, I'm so excited.

It's so extreme and fun and
I think it's Project Runway.

Like, stuff should be
interesting.

I think when I put a pop
of color, which I noticed

that there wasn't a lot
of color on the runway.

I think my look
is very hood couture.

I feel great about my look.

She's looking hella fresh.

your inspiration and your look.

When Tim talked about
taking the island theme to

a concrete city, so I
kind of wanted to bring in, uh,

gray into it, then also I wanted
to bring in the colors

of the jungle
without it being so obvious

but just kind of combine, like,
the two jungles together.

Well, I always appreciate
your thought process.

Today, it looks
like she got sick on the ride.

I have to agree with Zac.
I feel like it falls short.

The construction of it
looks ill-fitting.

The embroidery looks like hay,
which doesn't really have much

to do with the jungle.

I appreciate
what you were trying to do,

but I just feel like
it was a miss.

The top was interesting
and a cool idea,

but I think the fit
is not the best.

The back of that top
should have been the front.

-Correct. -Yeah.
-Coulda, shoulda, woulda.

It is what it is.

This is the time,

as a designer, when you really
have to refocus and push it.

'Cause now the competition's on.

Dexter, tell us about
your inspiration and your look.

I'm, like, a big fan
of offbeat streetwear,

so I kind of wanted to create
a vibe using denim

but then also going
with the theme

of it being, like,
a safari color.

I tried in different ways
to just kind of give the feel

of someone that could have been
out there for a while.

There's a little bit of hood
in there, too. I'm from Oakland,

so I brought
a little bit of that with it.

I love her attitude,

from head to toe.
I love her hair,

her makeup, her earrings,
her shoes,

the buttons that you chose.

-I painted them.
-It feels very strong.

It's a great moment in fashion,

and I think
that we need more disrupters.

Oh, my God, my heart right now

is doing things
I didn't know my heart could do.

I don't think this is disrupting
fashion, unfortunately.

It looks like it... you went
to the wrong theme park.

I'm not loving this look either.

-Okay.
-It's definitely memorable.

It's just not my taste.

It's trying too hard
to be avant-garde.

I don't know who this girl is.
I don't want to be that girl.

This is definitely, walking down
the runway, one of the ones

that caught my eye
'cause it was very interesting.

The shorts are great.

Dexter, I love the gloves.

It's really unique.

-It's a fine line

between attempting
something avant-garde

and bordering on costumey,

and from the shadow
before she came out,

I could see the shoulders
were uneven.

If you're gonna
attempt something like that,

-it has to be perfect.

Sometimes it's hard
for people to get comfortable

with something that is strange.

-I do applaud you, Dexter.

Nathalia, tell us about
your inspiration and your look.

I was inspired by the bats
inside the ride, by their wings.

So I decided to do
an exaggerated dolman sleeve.

The urban girl wants to layer
in the winter under her jacket,

and the colors were
also inspired from the ride.

I love her.

I want to be her.

I love the easiness,
the coolness.

I just love her vibe.

-You nailed it today.

If I saw this in a mannequin
at a store, I would be like,

"Where is this? I want
to buy the entire outfit."

That jacket is amazing.

I love the pockets.

I loved seeing it
when she put her arms out.

She just looks really
just effortlessly chic.

I like the fact that you played
with this incredible volume,

and you had it here

I saw a silhouette that just
looked like something that feels

forward-thinking but still

tell us about your inspiration
and your look.

At the Skull Island ride,
I was immediately inspired

by the-the whole experience
of all of these things

just coming so close to you,
but you knew it wasn't real.

I wanted to channel that
and put that into street style.

I'm having trouble
with this look, because I feel

like she almost got dressed
in the dark.

It's too much going on,
and I'm confused

as to why she's pairing
those things together.

It didn't really go together,
but it went together, in a way.

-Where?
-But I think the sewing's great.

It's annoying. I don't
understand the taste level.

I feel like I-I'm on a bad ride.

You put in a lot of work.

I wish you would've put
a little more work

in conceiving it, because
it feels like it just happened

without any planning.

[whispers]:
It did.

-Uh... -It did?
-Yeah.

This is very obvious.

Laurence, tell us about your
inspiration and your look.

When we were inside the ride,

there was this little creature
that was spitting water at us,

but it looked like the sleeves,
so I decided

to use that
and make a b*mber jacket.

And also, I was inspired
by the khaki

that the actress was wearing
with a little black tank.

Wow. Yet again,
very intelligently,

you are showing us your brand.

Thank you.

I think this is Kong-tastic.

-[chuckles] -It looks polished,
it looks poised.

You are fierce
on a sewing machine.

The pieces look finished.
She looks chic.

I can see the safari influence.

I like this Michael Jackson red.

Model obviously feels real good.
You could tell.

You know, there's something
a little funny

in the crotch happening.

-I messed up. -I mean,
it maybe looks more like

it's for a boy.

Can I see the back?

Very cool.

The quilting's beautiful.

The construction
looks really interesting.

I think it's a cotton jersey.

what I called "poopy pants."

These don't look like

your inspiration and your look.

Going to Skull Island,

I took the fight
against King Kong

and "dinosaurs," as you call it,
so I decided to, like,

keep it a little wild
and distressed down here.

And then make it
a drop crotch pant,

going back to the roots of,
like, hip-hop dancing.

So, I wanted it to be
a little bit more swag.

That was pretty much
the concept.

To me, this looks like
a school project.

-A school project?
-It looks like

you do not know how to
work a sewing machine.

Her poor boobies were swimming
in this top.

[quietly]:
Okay.

The drop crotch jean is not
looking good.

All the patches
are not looking good.

It just is an eyesore.

-Okay.
-I agree,

with a lot of what you said.

The top fits incredibly poorly.

It's just not... [laughs]
it's not for me.

I like it from the knees down,
but the knee up,

it just doesn't fit well
or do her any favors.

I'm intrigued that you're

bringing a denim technique
of street style,

but you got to evolve it
further than that.

The top, besides the color--

Cornelius, I think you have
the opposite problem

but the execution
was really bad.

At least you're
in the right era.

I mean, we've been wearing this

It's almost like the embroidery
has become her crutch.

TIM: She couldn't execute
what her plan was.

And I loved her plan,
but this wasn't it.

It looks like she has it on
in reverse.

I appreciate the work
that this took.

He worked hard, but
everything else is terrifying.

I love patchwork,
but not when it looks like this.

And there was no love
in the construction

or imagination of that top.
