- Yeah.

- At this point, I feel great
to be able to have two wins.

I'm proving myself
to the judges,

and they like what they see,

and it just makes me feel
that I'm meant to be here.

- It's time to get serious
around here,

- It's about to get,
like, "Hunger Game" real.

- But before
we go any further,

we should divide you
up into teams.

- Blake, you won
the last challenge.

- Yay.
- You're going to come forward

onto the runway
and choose a team member.

I promise not to sh**t you.

- We're trying not to.

- I choose Swapnil.
- Whoo!

- I will choose the first person
from the other team

out of the button bag.

Candice.

- You get to come up
and stand by me.

- Candice can call me because we
just won a challenge together,

and she knows how strong I am
as a designer and as a sewer.

- Candice, who do you choose?

- Miss Amanda.

- I know Ashley's
a great designer,

but I'm choosing Amanda,

'cause I know that
she's been in the bottom.

I've watched her struggle.

I want to kind of uplift her.

- Swapnil, you will choose
the next member for your team.

- Joseph.

- Amanda, you will choose
the next member for your team.

- I pick Kelly.
- Eee.

- Joseph.
- I choose Jake.

- Kelly, who do you choose
next for your team?

- Doubt is coming
through my head at this point.

I do not want to be
the last person to get chosen.

- Lindsey.

- Boys versus girls.
- Yep.

- Jake, who do you choose
for your team?

- Well, I don't want
to disappoint Tim, so Edmond.

[laughter]

- Lindsey,
who do you choose for your team?

- I'm gonna go with Lauren.

- Well, boys, you're gonna
have to choose a girl now.

[laughter]

- Um...

I choose Merline.

- Yay.

- I have to say, you guys,
I'm really shocked.

Ashley has won
two challenges,

and she's the last one
sitting there?

You guys are nuts.

Ashley, you're gonna
be here with these girls.

- Okay.

[quiet applause]

I'm so pissed off.
Like, I don't even want

to be on the girls' team
at this point,

because the only strategy they
had was to pick their roommate

or their best friend
in this competition.

- Designers, I will see you
on the b*ttlefield.

- Get out there
and kick some booty!

- Designers, in case
you haven't guessed,

you're going to play
a game of paintball.

all: Yay.
- Specifically,

this game is called
Capture the Fabric.

all: Ohh.

- The ladies are
the red team,

and the gentlemen
and Merline are the blue team.

It's like Capture the Flag.

Your objective is to get
as much fabric as you can

for the challenge.

Blue team, you're going
to defend your barrel of fabric

against the red team's attack.

Then we'll switch it around,

and the boys plus Merline
will attack the girls.

Two of you will be armed
with paintball g*ns.

Four of you will have
paintball grenades.

[laughter]

- We have to get this fabric.

We better get some [bleep]
fabric, guys.

But all I can think
at this moment is, like,

this is gonna hurt.

Like, a bunch.

- Red team,
your time starts now.

[upbeat music]

[paintball g*ns firing]
[all exclaiming]

- I've got one job:

to keep these girls
away from the fabric.

[paintball g*ns popping]
[indistinct chatter]

- Keep going, guys.

[paintball g*ns popping]
[indistinct chatter]

[whistle blows]

And that is time.

- Good job, girls.

- It's the blue team's turn

to be on the offense.

On your marks, get set, go!

- I used to play paintball
with my brother

when I was a teenager.

Nobody knows
that I have this advantage.

[paintball g*ns popping]

- Ow!

- Ohh!

I am thinking Ashley
may have been a good pick,

because this girl is bad
with this paintball g*n.

- Ohh!

- I see blood.

- Blue team, and what happened
to Blake?

I don't even see him anywhere.

- So, I'm just like,
in the back,

just trying
to stay white and clean.

[rock music]

- That is time.

- Ahh!

- Whoo hoo!
- Whoo hoo!

- Designers, I have
a little twist for you.

[electronic music]

The material for your challenge,
you've just created.

It's what you're wearing.

[all laugh]

Your captured fabrics

are your supplemental
materials.

Each team will create
a six-look mini-collection.

That means a collection
that is cohesive.

There are six
of you and six looks.

You can split up these looks
however you choose to do it.

And in Blake's case,
maybe he won't make anything.

all: Ohh!

- As Merline would say,
"Oh, snap."

[all laugh]

You have the rest of today
for this challenge,

and all day tomorrow.

[all cheer]

Let's head back to the workroom.

Off we go.

- Oh, our jumpsuits.
- Hello, Lindsey.

- Designers, in addition
to your paintball jumpsuits,

there are white sheets
that are blank canvases,

and we have paintball paint
and paintball grenades.

Cohesion is very important,
all right?

So knock everyone's socks off.

I know you can do it.

Thank you, everyone.
- Thanks, Tim.

[funky music]

- I think we should
do something more glamorous

and 1950s, maybe,
I don't know.

The '50s is--
you can do volume.

You can do drama.

You can do a lot
of those things.

- Let's do the '50s.

I think it gives us
the most freedom.

- Someone do a giant jacket--

like some kind
of cinched-waist jacket.

- I feel like you would
be good at a jacket.

- But cinch the waist.

- I was thinking of a sundress.

- I want to do
a five-panel mermaid skirt.

- There need--we need to find
some common element--

like, whatever it is--
like, one common--

- There should be a few.
- At least one.

- I feel like we
should create our own pattern,

instead of polka dots.

- I was thinking
more of Jackson Pollock.

Have you seen his art?
- Oh, Jackson Pollock!

Can we do Jackson Pollock?
- Shh, keep your volume down.

- I think we need to have
a uniform textile,

and I would really like
to take on making the textiles

for the team.

What if we do something that's
sort of Pollock-inspired?

Because it will carry
across the idea of paint

and the paintball challenge,

but it will do it
in a more high-fashion way.

[hammer smashes paintball]
- Ah!

- I like.

- Oh, that's a lot.

Now it's turning
into a hot mess.

- It's getting mushy.
- That's because

there's shells
everywhere on this.

We got to pick these shells.
- No, it's too much color.

It went from chic to,
like, it rained.

We have no more white fabric.

We have destroyed all of it.

Now what do we do?

- Oh, it feels so colorful.

- We are working our asses off.

I mean, we're painting shoes.

We're painting fabrics.

We are, you know, helping one
another with sewing techniques.

I mean, we're working
like a well-oiled machine.

- Take the same piece,

and do the same thing
with a mirror image here.

And then keep the bottom
as you've made.

- Yeah.

- Does this look okay so far?
- Yeah, it's cute.

- You guys like it?
- Mm-hmm.

- I love it.

- At this point, I feel like

everybody's just
creating an individual look.

They're gonna be responsible
for that individual look,

and then that's it.

And it shouldn't be like this.

This is a team challenge.

We should be able
to collaborate.

Nobody sees that.

- Good heavens.

- Wow, what a workroom.

How is everyone?

- Good.

- So, Merline and the boys,

how are you feeling
about your collection?

- So far, good.

- Yeah.
- Okay.

So what am I
looking at here?

Prototypes?
- The foundation.

We all used our jumpsuit as,
like, the base

for what we're creating.
- Okay.

- We just did a little
deconstructing to it.

- We thought, "Why not make
it more glamorous?"

So we thought,
take the '50s,

which was classic and glamorous
and modern--volume.

- So '50s volume
is the common denominator here?

- Mm-hmm, with the,
like, cinched waist.

- Take me on a tour.
- This is a coat.

- Okay.

- And so we wanted to do
the whole cinch, with volume.

But then, on one side,
it's just like, more stream.

- I wanted to create a lot
of volume and flow,

and just make it
a little bit more modern.

- The neckline's great.

- I'm gonna chop that off
and make it into a tube.

And the skirt is gonna be a take
on the '50s full-volume skirt.

- Music to my ears.
Carry on, everybody.

- Thank you, Tim.

- You look like you're
all lined up waiting for me.

- Yes, we're ready.
- What's going on?

- I'm doing this top,

and it's going to be
a wrap skirt.

- Okay.

- My skirt's a five-panel
mermaid skirt.

And up here I'm gonna do,
like,

a seashell sort
of corset underneath.

- I'm pleating a halter-neck,

pleated skirt dress.

It's a work in progress.
- I understand.

Hopefully, this is all
a work in progress.

- So, I'm making, like,
a little--I wouldn't call it,

like, a rain jacket,
but, like, a shower jacket.

- So one thing I know I
want to do is something that's,

like, longer and more dramatic.

As of now, I'm not really sure
what I'm making--

something with a jacket on top,

to be determined.
Very scary.

- Can I just tell you all,

this is an Easter egg
festival.

- God.

- I mean, all you need
are some bunny ears.

- Oh, that's awful.

- Something needs to happen.

- Okay.

- Maybe I'll do purple
over this splatter

to tie it in with that.

- And then I'll put
purple on mine,

so we tie back together.

- We all decide to go
with purple.

And we're all gonna have that,

and that's gonna
be the cohesion.

Not my favorite color,
but you know what?

That's all we have,
'cause we've ruined

the rest of our fabric.

- We went paint balling.

- And this is
the actual fabric.

This is gonna be, like,
real, real full at the bottom.

We are really
working well together,

so I feel really strong

about us coming out the winners
of this particular challenge.

So our models walk in the door,

and we have pretty much nothing
to put on them.

- Just pray for us.
Really, seriously.

- I'm like, freaking out,
like really bad.

Like, I can't even
concentrate now.

Really wasn't a fitting.

None of us really
have any clothes.

So we're all feeling
pretty terrified.

white and blue--
and just having it be our own,

so that they still do
look cohesive with the nails.

- This would be,
like, a French tip almost.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, these are all the colors
to choose from.

- We decide to go
with this gold ombre.

- Whatever it is,
we'll make it beautiful.

- And it's going
to give an element of pop

to the whole entire look.

- I think it's really neat

that you can put
different patterns on

and accessorize
with your nail art.

- We've decided on the top
for my look,

which is a sort
of cape combination,

and brings the rest
of the looks together as well.

- I like it.
- It's--it's cute, right?

- It's the Smurfs against
the Purple People Eaters.

- I--I agree.
- Just one purple in the back,

You don't think it's weird?

all: No.

- Okay.
- Not in this collection.

- I might just scrap the pants
and make new ones.

I decide to scrap the pant,
because they're just too tight.

So I'm gonna
do the circle skirt.

And I end up
making a low v-cut shirt

with ruffles on each side.

- Something needs to cover
that yellow.

So what if we do, like,

a floral?

I'm concerned
because we want to win.

We want this to be
a cohesive collection

that will impress the judges.

And it's just taking so long
to get there.

- Five minutes, people.
Five minutes.

- I think we should all wear
purple tomorrow, too.

- Yeah, so we can make
it even more nauseating.

I have more to prove
to the judges than anyone else

at this particular point.

And my team is kind
of bringing me down,

because it's really
not exactly my fault.

But that's the way
a team challenge works.

but it actually looks just real
glossy as it's walking down.

It took three coats
of very thick paint

to paint the faux suede
to this really dark blue

that then tied our collection
together even further.

- I'm so not a gossiper or a,
like, "he said, she said," but--

- Who?

- Um, they're all throwing
you under the bus.

I can just hear and see people's

I get the sense that,
if it comes to us

because I know I do not

As you know, in fashion,
one day you're in,

and the next day,
you're out.

There are 12 of you here,

and after tonight,
there will be 11.

For this challenge,
you worked in two teams of six.

I have to say,
I found your choosing process

to be very peculiar.

Each team was to create
a six-piece

mini cohesive collection.

You also visited the
Sally Beauty Mobile Nail Studio

and got the opportunity to
create nail art for your models.

All right, let's say
hello to our judges.

First, we have Creative Director
for Brooks Brothers Women,

and fashion designer, Zac Posen.

art collector, Lisa Perry.

- Also we have Tim Gunn here
for the runway show.

And as you know,
he is your mentor

and will not be
judging your looks.

That said,
he will have the Tim Gunn Save.

We also have an anonymous
runway show,

which means we the judges do not
know who designed which look.

All right, let's start the show.

- My look is clean, fresh,
and crisp,

and I'm really happy
how it turned out.

Having a white top,

and having it just fade into
the paint, looks really good.

♪ ♪

- My design aesthetic is not
that wow, wow, wow factor.

It's a true representation
of me and my style.

It's so good.
It is so good.

I think that,
by shrinking the jacket,

it really made
a much larger impact.

♪ ♪

- My look is looking
quite nice,

and I'm just looking
at Kelly Osbourne

looking at my piece

and hopefully liking it,
if not loving it.

♪ ♪

I'm extremely proud
of the look,

considering the amount
of changes I had to make.

Everything is looking perfect.

♪ ♪

- I love my look,
because it flows.

I think it feels very '50s,
and yet feels very modern.

And I'm happy
that we worked a pant option

into a collection
that is really

about draping and dresses.

♪ ♪

- I feel like I got to
design something

that I'm super proud of.

♪ ♪

- The dipping was perfect.

- I feel like I got to
bring something to this team.

I feel amazing about my design.

♪ ♪

- It looks really good.

I am glad that
I chose the silhouette

that I'm going with.

This is more
of a statement piece.

It definitely turned out
the way I envisioned,

and I'm proud of it.

- I'm excited to see my look.

I like how everything
fits on my model.

It's a perfect length.
Nothing's falling off.

It looks like it's well made.

♪ ♪

I only question
if it's fashionable,

'cause the color is definitely
throwing this all off.

♪ ♪

- I love the culottes.

They're short in the front
and long in the back.

- Like a high-low hem.
both: Mm-hmm.

- And I turned the jumper
into a vest.

I don't think
it's a bad collection.

♪ ♪

- I feel fine when I see
my look come down the runway.

I can definitely see
myself in it.

But honestly,
it looks a little flat.

♪ ♪

I feel comfortable,

but it's not gonna knock
anybody's socks off.

♪ ♪

- My look walks down
the runway,

and I see there's ambition
in my top.

The collar's the waistband.

Her teeny, tiny waist
actually fit that collar.

You can see that I'm trying
to create these folds.

And it's not the worst look,

but it's not the best look.

♪ ♪

- I am not happy with
the fabric I had to use,

and I'm not happy
with the colors.

I am just hoping
that I'm safe this week.

♪ ♪

- It does create drama.

It was designed
and not super basic.

So I'm actually feeling okay
at this moment.

- I think we pulled
it off, girls.

♪ ♪

- There will be a winning team
and a losing team.

One member from the winning
team will be the winner

of this challenge,

and one member from
the losing team will be out.

[dramatic music]

- Boys and Merline,

Girls, we're going to talk
to the winning team first,

and then I'm gonna bring you
back out in a little bit.

- All right, tell us about your
collection and who did what.

- This was very much a team
effort, from start to finish.

No garment was 100% started
or finished by one individual.

From my end,
I worked mainly on the textile.

Blake did the finishing
of the flowers,

because Blake paints flowers
so much better than I do.

[laughter]

And then, for my look,

I focused on the pants,
and then worked with Swapnil

and, actually, Joseph--

and Edmond--on the top as well.

- For my look,
I constructed the coat,

and then Jake
and Edmond dipped it.

And then that beautiful flower
that you see to her left,

that's our awesome Blakey.

- Okay, so our base inspiration
obviously came from the '50s,

which is why that reference
sort of follows through

all of our designs.

But my specific design,

the third one--the top half
is made from the jumpsuit,

so I've deconstructed it.

And the bottom half is made
from the supplementary fabric.

- Mine is the next look.

I took the entirety
of the jumpsuit, cut it down,

shrunk the top,

and then created the pants
into a skirt,

and then had some great flowers
going on over here, too.

- I did the clean, white,
fresh one--the dress--

and then had the print
on the bottom.

I wanted to show something
a little bit more tailored

that I could do.

- No flowers on yours.

- No, I just thought
it didn't need it.

- And my look was the gown.

I started with the jumpsuit,

and I pretty much formed it
to the mannequin's body,

as well as my model's shape.

And I added a lot of volume
and length for the bottom.

- You guys really
stepped it up this week.

- Thank you.
- It's so clear that,

as a group,
the collaboration was there,

and that you enjoyed process.

- Oh, yeah, we did.

- It's great.
I'm really proud of you.

- Thank you.
- Thank you.

- What I like most
about this collection

is that you really
used the material

that you guys created.

You know, I love the gown.

I think the gown
looks beautiful.

It's fresh.
It's not an old-fashioned gown.

I also love this big skirt
with the--

- Balloon hem.
- Corset.

- What got to me the most
about your collection

was that it was fun.
- Yay.

- It had that element
of fun and energy.

With the paint splatter,

I see the energy in each and
every one of the looks,

but they still look very
sophisticated and polished.

- The first gown
stands out to me.

And it's a wow.

I think that, if she walked
into any event anywhere,

I think that all heads
would turn.

And I love the halter--

the open back also.
- Yeah.

- I want it.
[laughter]

As long
as I can wear Spanx.

[laughter]

You did a really [bleep]
good job, you guys.

about your collection

and who did what.

- Well, as our collection
began to evolve and change,

we realized that our girl
was from San Francisco.

We wanted to create
a collection

that would encompass
her entire wardrobe.

Kelly did the first,
Lindsey did the second,

Amanda did the third,
I did the fourth,

Ashley did the fifth,
and Laurie did the last.

- Does anyone else have
anything to say?

- I do.
- Yeah?

- There was never a clear vision
of what we were designing.

Everyone was designing
on an individual basis,

and personal feelings
got involved,

and this is what
came about from that.

- So you guys
did not work well together.

- You know,
I might have to disagree.

In the beginning,
we came together,

and we all had a lot of ideas.

I do agree that there was
no clear direction.

- Ashley, you've been
very quiet.

- Just a lot of emotions.

And it was just tough.

It was tough
because I was picked last,

and my confidence
was just gone after that.

- Because you didn't feel
like anyone wanted you.

- Fashion is
a ruthless business.

It really is.

And you have to have
a thick skin.

- This collection really looked
like amateur hour.

It really did.
- Yup.

- I don't know why you guys
couldn't work
