for your challenge.

The first challenge,

we're supposed to show

who we are as a person.

when I was here,

I got cut early.

I didn't even get to compete.

Amanda, you finally

made it to the runway.

I really would like to be more,

Wow.

I'm actually feeling

like Alice in Wonderland,

because it does look

like Wonderland.

There's just amazing cards

everywhere.

Good morning, designers.

Well, I want you to

join me in welcoming

Hallmark's Director of Branding

for Hallmark Signature,

Amy Merchant.

Hello, designers.

all: Hi.

We're thrilled to be here

with you, Amy, and I'd love

for you to tell the designers

why we are here.

Of course, I'd be happy to.

Like fashion designs,

our cards are pieces of art

with a story to tell,

and they are each created

and written to make

an impression on the recipient.

And, designers, you are going

to make an impression

on the judges

with this challenge,

because these cards

are not only your inspiration.

Don't say it.

They are the materials

for your challenge.

So as I'm sure

you've now deduced,

this is an unconventional

materials challenge.

I'm super excited

that this is the first

unconventional challenge.

It's not every day that you get

to work with crazy materials

or go into Hallmark

and get to go crazy and grab

all the beautiful cards.

And even though we're using

unconventional materials,

your looks need to look

like real, wearable clothes.

And you will have one day

for this challenge, all right?

Oh, my gosh.

So you will be making

a Hallmark Signature Collection

look in one day.

When Amy gives you

the signal,

you will have two minutes

to gather as many of the cards

as you possibly can.

Say hello

for these pink, sparkly cards

that say "fabulous" on them.

He went to them first

and grabbed them.

I just like sparkly things.

into my two bags

and hoping that I have enough

to cover her in.

Ten seconds!

So we had our very frenetic

Hallmark Signature card

collection visit.

It was fun, wasn't it?

all: Yeah.

One day for this challenge.

That means midnight tonight.

All right, let's make

some stuff.

It's all gonna be

transitions--like, reds into

pinks into, like,

very, very pale.

I have this beautiful paper

that looks like lace.

So my plan is to make a dress

that has a tight bodice

and a big skirt on the bottom

that is--has a lot of volume.

Personally, I think

unconventional material

challenges are some of the most

difficult to get right,

because you don't know

the materials, and you don't

know what they'll do.

Ow!

And we have one day

for this challenge,

so it's very challenging

to make sure

that you're on the right path

and you're on it fast.

what you're doing.

How's it make you feel?

Feeling that pressure.

That's why I'm here.

So, I wanted to create

a poncho, and I thought that

this would be a great material,

because it has structure to it.

This should feel like fabric.

It should have that ease

of motion.

Are these pieces too big?

Think about a shoulder.

True. Okay.

I mean, the way it is here,

you're gonna have

the Tin Woodman.

Carry on.

Swapnil, how are you?

Okay.

So what are you doing?

I'm gonna do a shirt.

It'll be an ombre of polka dots.

All black and white?

All black and white

on the top, and the back,

I'm going to have pinstripes.

A chevron?

Yes.

Okay.

And then, the skirt--

I'm going to attach

all these flowers on it.

Wow.

So that the skirt's gonna

be all color, and the top's

gonna be just black and white.

I, as a designer, have a point

of view which is very out there.

For instance,

I take Alice in Wonderland

as my inspiration,

but it's Alice on acid.

That's a lot of work.

I'm just torn between

an umbrella skirt

or a basic tulip,

because an umbrella's

gonna take forever.

It might be a micro mini.

[laughs]

[electronic music]

So what are you doing?

It's just a bodice up here.

Okay.

And then, I have

a high-low skirt.

Uh-huh.

And then, on the outside,

I was playing with putting

black glitter all over

the fabric, and then just

puzzle-piecing it together

with this, and just having

a sparkle moment on the runway.

Especially with the black,

I'm afraid it's going to look

like stained glass.

Think refined.

Think sophisticated.

Think wow moment.

That's not gonna give it to you.

To not be on the bottom,

I need to make a dress

that does not look tortured.

I definitely feel like

that first challenge

was a rough start.

I definitely do not want

to be in the bottom ever again.

[groans]

I love the--all the triangles

and the squares that make up

bigger squares,

so I developed a shape,

which I really love.

You're beautifully able

to think in terms of form.

Uh-huh.

But how is your model

getting in and out of that?

I was sure about this

at first, and now, I feel like

it's a little old lady-ish.

I like what's happening

in the back--like, I really love

all of these little things.

I can tell.

I just can't figure out

exactly how to place it.

Where you're going on

this path, I'm excited by.

Awesome.

I want to encourage you

to use these to break this up,

because this, to me, looks

like you're repairing a roof.

My inspiration was pretty

much these two wedding cards.

"Nothing fits better

in your hand than mine."

Yeah, the ones that go with,

like, a wedding gown effect,

and cut out the small,

black and white signature

to create a pattern.

These are envelopes?

Those are envelopes.

These are the back of the cards.

Uh-huh.

This is the insert

from the interior of the cards.

Oh, this is actually--

this is good.

Everything is bridal.

And I will say, it's

wonderful to be able to say,

"This was my inspiration,

and this is where it took me."

This panel right here--

that's peekaboo.

It's gonna be black

but textured.

I don't even know whether

you need the black.

Make her the strong,

powerful woman,

and if it's beautiful, then--

Yeah, Tim, I'm loving that.

Yeah, just own it.

I think she deserves the hug.

So I called my design,

"It's a moment,"

because I think it's

the moment you open it.

Okay.

So when model

walk on a runways,

she'd take one card out.

Well, it's very conceptual.

Hanmiao's dress

is interesting.

Up close, it looks crafty,

but when you have some distance,

it gives it the distinct

impression of leather.

I see the designers who work

in professional environments

struggle with, like, this paper.

My background

is mostly self-taught,

and I just really

like piecing things together,

and I think I can do

this with the paper.

I'm doing sort of,

like, a fringe effect.

Not "sort of like," it is.

I really like making,

like, my own textiles,

so I'm gonna cover the whole,

entire thing with all of this.

I'll say this.

There's a lot happening.

Yeah.

It's a point of view.

David, it's not easy

to navigate this workroom.

I know.

How are you?

I'm sorry.

Super nervous.

I never work with color, so I'm,

like, a little bit afraid.

The top looks like

a paper card project.

This is constipated.

Your design just looks...

stiff and stuck.

Reconceive.

I think everybody's having

a make-it-work moment.

So I collected all the red,

pink, and pale pink cards

that I could find,

and I'm just laying it

in strips.

Well, you look smashing.

I think that Gabby's design

is great.

Like, totally out of box.

I got these beer,

wine glasses off of a card,

and I thought that I would place

these in a particular design.

There's way too much muslin

and gold without

anything over it,

which isn't going to sit well

with the judges.

My idea was--

is to give this some structure,

I was gonna use some of

the popsicle sticks,

and then, I was gonna

do the polka dots,

playing with this at an angle.

It's very Kate Spade.

Yeah.

I like it.

Amanda.

I've changed my plan

about five times.

What happened?

Well, my first thing

were these,

and they were all white,

'cause I liked them

'cause they looked like lace.

So I painted them black

so it didn't come across as,

like, wedding dress.

Your textile treatment

is beautiful.

Making it black gives it

so much graphic punch.

Right.

The skirt was the one thing

that I was like,

"Oh, I like the shape."

But what are you

going to do to it?

I know, that's true.

You don't have any idea.

You have a big challenge

in that, and this is

still a lot of work.

Mm-hmm.

And the clock's ticking.

Yeah.

And your models are gonna

be coming in for a fitting.

Aah!

I don't know what to do.

Like, genuinely don't know

what to do, and like,

this has never happened

in my entire life,

where I just had no idea.

so she's, like, a sweet bride.

And you can be the groomsman.

just a beautiful sparkle.

As you know, in fashion,

one day you're in,

and the next day, you're out.

There are 15 of you here,

and after tonight,

there will be 14.

Now, this is one of

my favorite challenges,

because I really think that it

pushes you to be super creative.

We sent you to the Hallmark

store to get your materials.

You were to create a design

using cards from the Hallmark

Signature Collection.

Your look was supposed

to be fashionable and wearable.

All right, let's say hello

to our judges.

First, we have creative director

of Brooks Brothers Women

and fashion designer, Zac Posen.

Hello, designers.

Creative director

for Marie Claire magazine,

Nina Garcia.

Hi, everyone.

And today's guest judge,

fashionable actress,

star of Clipped, and also

launching her new style site,

The Hot Mess, Ashley Tisdale.

Also we have Tim Gunn here

for the runway show.

As you know, he is your mentor,

and he will not be judging.

That said,

he will have one Tim Gunn save.

All right, let's start the show.

I'm literally seeing

butterflies fly in the air

from the skirt.

The movement is amazing.

The flowers have a life.

The top, it's fitting her

like a dream.

The stripes match

perfectly in the back.

It's a cute detail.

I just know I've made a

poncho in the past, and I've

been able to execute it the

right way.

I don't think that it's right

for this challenge.

♪ ♪

I'm just glad that I

have immunity at this point.

♪ ♪

I think that it is kind

of funky and different.

I just wish that I would've

been able to use the cards

in a different manner

on the skirt.

My concern is that the skirt

is not gonna be innovative

enough for the judges.

I'm really happy,

because we see the glitter

is really casual, urban, modern,

and sophisticated.

Good job, David.

It's really my look.

It's really my style.

It's really me.

The fact that I've chosen

one specific material to work

with out of all of the cards--

I hope it plays in my favor.

I think that's the spirit

of what this challenge was.

Take the unconventional

material, and roll it

until the wheels fall off

if you can,

and that's what I've done.

The whole, entire room

and all the lights

from the runway--

it's like the dress

is soaking it up,

and it looks fierce.

I'm so happy

that I owned that silver,

because it's rocking the runway.

It doesn't look like paper.

It looks like metal.

♪ ♪

I think my design is totally

different than other people.

It's like young, edgy,

you know, fun.

♪ ♪

Oh, my God, that looks great.

♪ ♪

I actually like the color,

how it looks, and how it reads

on the runway.

I think it's more powerful than

if I had done something white.

I did not want it to be

a very form-fitted dress.

I wanted to have a little bit

of a looser silhouette.

Overall, I like it.

I love the proportions.

I love the shape.

I love the color.

The skirt is not too short.

It's a good length.

It all came together,

and I'm very proud of myself

for that.

All the light is catching

all the glitter

that is on that dress.

I'm so happy with how it

is looking on the runway.

She's not hanging by

the pool--she's at the bar.

♪ ♪

I really like the color

palette of this dress.

I think it's just very pleasant.

This looks super classy.

I love it.

I mean, it looks super

different than everybody else's,

and I don't think

that's a bad thing.

I feel so good.

I love the way the skirt moves.

It is totally me.

I feel like my design

is very different

than from what a lot of people

did with the envelopes,

and I'm hoping

the judges see that.

I do think it's fun.

It's playful, it's whimsical.

And that's really who I am

as a designer.

My bottom,

could it be a little better?

Yeah, it could've,

but I'm at least feeling

pretty solid that I'm gonna be

in the middle.

I love my design.

I love that it's futuristic.

I like the silhouette

of the bottom, where

the front is longer

than the side.

I just hope the judges

kind of understand that I really

worked hard on it,

that my vision came across.

I think, for me,

that's more important right now.

It turned out exactly

the way that I envisioned,

and that's the thing.

When you have a vision,

getting it out, creating it

so other people can see it,

and that's my superhero power.

Blake, tell us about your look

and the materials that you used.

Yeah, I saw this purple,

shiny card that said "fabulous"

on it, so I went straight

for that and used it

as the lining in the skirt.

And then, there was another card

that said, "there's no such

thing as too much sparkle,"

and I used that for the middle

section, and then I painted

on the rest of it.

I like it.

I think it fits amazing,

and I like how you

kept everything else simple,

because it's so much glitter.

I like this dress.

I thought it had color.

It had presence.

I thought it was sexy.

Most of all, it actually

looks like it is fabric.

You know, the ombre effect

from pink to fuchsia to purple--

Kelly, tell us about

your look and the materials

that you used.

I wanted to use

the envelopes.

I feel like not a lot of people

were gonna use those.

So I used the envelopes

on the bottom,

and then I found this, like,

textured gold, and I really

liked the feel of it,

and I wanted to just build,

like, a pattern on the top

and just keep it fun.

I really liked it.

I feel like you used

interesting techniques.

You used, like, a tessellation

pattern on the top,

and it fits really, really well,

and you then created a different

texture on the bottom.

You played with dimension

of paper.

Thank you very much.

I love that it's a crop top,

'cause that is very now.

I can't even tell

that that is an envelope.

The texture on the skirt

is awesome.

My favorite part of this

is the top part of this.

The pattern that you created

is beautiful.

I just don't think the top

and the bottom--to me,

it's a little bit too much.

I agree with Heidi.

There's a lot going on.

You have fringe.

You have the crop top.

You have the hoodie.

You have the sparkles.

I just wish it were

a little more sophisticated.

Amanda, tell us about

your look and the materials

that you used.

I wanted to do something

that was fun and playful.

I used all cards.

This was all white.

Like, I thought it looked

like lace, so I pulled it

all off of the cards

and painted it,

and I wanted to create texture

so it wasn't so flat,

so I put a print underneath.

And then, I started making

a whole bunch of little

envelope fringe

to give her some fullness

to her skirt,

a little bit of volume so it

had that playfulness about it.

I think the word

you were looking for

for the skirt was "froufrou."

"Froufrou!" Yeah.

It's funny.

Now, I think you created

a really nice texture

and textile on top.

I love any kind of print

placed against a dark border.

You know, the skirt, for me--

it didn't complete or wow me.

I do feel like it looks

like you went

to a party supply store,

and you got the glitter

and the steamers,

and then, finally, the piñata,

and it's all there.

You got caught up

in that party supply store.

Not my favorite.

Okay.

It's just not working.

I think, once you are almost

halfway done or whatever,

you have to step back

and look at it as a whole.

It just didn't go with

each other, and then the slant--

I was just, like--didn't know

if it was unfinished,

or, like, what it was.

Edmond, now it makes sense

why you're wearing

what you're wearing.

So tell us about your look.

Tell us what you used.

My inspiration was

a bridal card.

So I built the bodice

of the dress

with the back of the card,

because I wanted it to be white,

but just not completely white.

The bouquet itself is made

out of the envelope

of some of the cards,

and the leafing

and also the jewelry.

I have to say, Edmond,

I love this look.

Thank you.

You played with volume,

which I love.

I love the proportions.

It fits her beautifully.

It is sexy at the same time.

Not every wedding dress

is sexy, too,

and I love that you did not use

any conventional material.

Awesome.

Hallmark is

all about special moments,

and you chose one

of the most special moments

in a woman's life.

It's celebrating.

It's right on the money.

I think it was

impeccable execution.

and the materials that you used.

My inspiration

was Alice in Wonderland.

But for today it was

more like Alice on acid,

which is why the garden sort

of element here--

and I wanted it to be modern

but fun, yeah.

Swapnil, you have a lot

going on here.

Yeah.

But it really works.

Oh, thank you.

I love how the flowers

pop off the skirt,

kind of in a 3-D way.

I love all the different colors

on the bottom, and the top

is black and white.

I think you did a fantastic job.

I used one card,

because I really loved

the writing and the 3-D,

but unfortunately, for me,

you missed the mark,

the unconventional material

For me, you bedazzled it

with it, but you didn't create

the entire look with it.

Well, it's clear to me

that I think you're probably one

of the more sophisticated,

fashion-savvy designers

in the competition,

but you didn't use the cards.

If the base of this jacket

had been cards, it probably

would've been in the top.

It's okay.

It's, like, an army jacket

with a hood.

Is it horrible and hideous?

No.

But is it creative?

No.

I think it's cool.
