It is such a boring, simple,
mother-of-the-bride’s dress.

- There’s a lot of problems.
- It’s like a boob canyon.

- It is rough.

- She looks like
a christmas ornament.

Korina, that means you’re in,

- I’m kind of getting
that it’s gonna be a wedding.

Are we taking apart old wedding
dresses and making a new one,

Or are we dressing a celebrity
for their wedding?

- Oh, my god,
it’s dita von teese.

- [Chuckles]

- Dita von teese
is just an amazing woman.

Not only is she sexy,
she’s a fashion icon.

- Good morning, designers.
- All: good morning, tim.

- I’ll bet you weren’t
expecting this this morning.

- Well, I know you recognize
this fantastic, fabulous,

And rapturous woman next to me--

Burlesque dancer and designer
of her own lingerie line,

The incomparable dita von teese

- Hello, designers.

- Quite thrilling.

- I’m super happy
to be here today.

- It’s not every day
that I get to walk a fashion

Icon down the aisle.

- Well, tim and I are not
getting married today,

But wouldn’t that be fun?

Actually, it would wake
my mother from the dead,

To be perfectly honest.
[Laughter]

And, you know, if dita
and I were getting married,

More and more people
are doing whatever they

Want with their weddings,
and they’re getting rid of

All those old traditional rules,
and that’s emblematic

Of this challenge.

It’s about shaking off
traditions.

- I love nontraditional
weddings.

I think a wedding is
a great opportunity for someone

To really let their dress
reflect their personality

And their character and not
just wear a bride’s costume.

- So, designers,
for this challenge, you

Are creating your own version
of an alternative wedding dress.

[All gasp, murmur]

- There are no rules.

- And there really
aren’t any rules, designers.

We want you to unleash
your creativity.

Just make certain that
it’s believable for a bride.

We don’t want costumes.

You will also be creating
a corresponding dress

For the reception.
- Oh, cool.

- So for the same bride.
And if that sounds like a lot

Of work, it is.

So, for this challenge, you’ll
be working in teams of two.

- The last thing I want to do...
Is listen to somebody else.

I hate team challenges.

- Each team will have one day
for this challenge

And a budget of $400.

So let’s choose our teams.

Fade, your teammate is... Emily.

- I’m excited
that fade is my partner.

We’re the only ones
that are close to the same age.

I’m married, and he’s married,

And we both know what each other
is really good at, so i’m happy.

- Alexander...
Samantha.

- I’m really excited
to be working with samantha.

We do have a similar design
aesthetic, and this challenge

Is really gonna
be good for the both of us.

- Kini...

[Laughter]

Sean.

- Sean, darling.

Oh, boy, he has immunity,

And if we go to the bottom,
I could be going home.

- Sandhya...

And, sandhya, your teammate
will be...

Charketa.

- I actually have mixed
emotions.

She has a really colorful,

Outside-the-box design
aesthetic,

And i’m more everyday
with a little twist.

So i’m kind of worried
for this challenge, honestly.

- So, amanda and korina,
you are together.

- I’m not quite sure yet
how I feel about amanda.

It’s hard to get close
to somebody that you’re not

Sure if you trust.

- Yay.

- Shall we?

- To the honeymoon.
- [Laughs]

So, designers, start sketching.

- Let’s do,
like, a colorful rock star.

What do you feel about that?
- Yeah, that’s good.

- Yeah, what about leather,
if we did a colorful leather?

- Why not?

- That’s something totally
different, so let’s maybe make

Her a wedding gown with, like,
maybe a leather vest over it.

Do you think--
what do you think about that?

- I think you should totally do
what you believe in.

- So maybe i’ll make
her reception dress.

- Okay. And i’ll do
the wedding dress.

I was--i have this technique
in my mind,

A hand lace technique.
- Okay.

- What kind of colors
are you thinking of?

- I’m thinking yellow.
- Like springy citrus?

- Exactly. Citrus, like that.
- Citrus, yeah.

- I totally feel denim.

Paint on denim...
- Mm-hmm.

- Is fabulous.

- Let’s not limit ourselves
to just using denim.

- No.
- I mean, it’s a good idea,

But, like, if we don’t see

The fabric really has to,
like, speak to us.

- And then a suit
for the ceremony--

It’s so nontraditional for

come off as just a suit.

Sandhya is not soft-spoken.

She’s headstrong.

Honestly, I wanted
a softer yellow.

So i’m kind of questioning it,

But I feel like, at this point
in the competition,

You have to take risks,

So you have to just go for it.

- Do you like
this for the veil?

- Yeah.

- My dress is gonna
be very dramatic--

Super long, train in the back,
crazy dramatic veil.

- That’s interesting.
You know what?

I’ll just roll the paint
on this, and that’s the paint.

- That’s really cool.

for a wedding.

We were really intrigued

By this oxblood lace.

This is the way we’re going
with the applique, like--

It really looks very organic.

It’s that additional applique--

- With this applique,
for the one that i’m doing,

It’s gonna have the high,
like, neck and a fuller skirt.

I just don’t want them to look
like she walked down the aisle,

It’s going to become a matter
of taste with the judges.

- So this is reception,

And this is ceremony?
- Right.

- I’d love to hear about it.

- I’m gonna do a veil
that’s gonna be,

Like, more like a hood,
like, really structured.

And then she pulls it down.

- Is it out of that?
Out of the lace?

- Yeah, out of the lace.

This is gonna be all fitted,
and I was thinking

If it had volume in the sleeve,
it would add

A little more drama.

Otherwise it might be
a little plain.

- I like it.

- So this is like,
early stage of the fabric.

- I know how you are.
You’re making a textile.

What shape is this
going to become?

- It will be very--
fitted dress, knee-length,

And then open here, maybe with,

Like, a trim to tie it back in.

- How do you each feel
about the relationship

Between these two garments?

It has a very different vibe.

The shape of it, the silhouette,

Has to be something
that you believe this bride

Would step into.
- Right.

- So i’m doing
the ceremony look.

It’s going to be a long jacket,
really tailored and fitted,

And some detailing in the lapels
and in the hemline.

- So it’s a tuxedo style.
- It’s gonna be a tuxedo.

- You need to get
as much of yourself into this

As you possibly can.

- This is not my
third fringe dress, I promise.

- The judges seem
to like fringe.

- Yeah, they do.
- Yeah.

- What i’m doing
is cutting out these kind

Of fun confetti shapes.

Here, you can kind of see
the effect.

- Actually, it’s beautiful.
- I know, right?

It’s kind of cool.
- Yeah.

let me ask this bluntly.

Korina, I just am not certain
whether you have enough

Innovation in that look.
- Mm-hmm.

critically and objectively

- We decided that the most
unconventional wedding

That we could think
of that was applicable to us

Was a g*y marriage.

- I’m ecstatic.

And no one else is doing that.

I couldn’t believe it.
So i’m thrilled.

- For my look,
we went with a more masculine

Top and then a feminine bottom.

- Mm-hmm.
- So, to make it a lot

More feminine--that’s why
I added the circular ruffle

Here and then just kept
with the tailoring

Of the jacket on the top.

- And the skirt is
asymmetrical?

- Yes.

- So, for the reception, we’re
doing, like, a tuxedo pant--

It’s like a cigarette leg--
and then up into this very

Low-cut draping.

It’s gonna stop here,
and then at the back,

It drapes down on the bias
like a veil almost.

- I like this--i like the
width of the tuxedo stripe.

- There’s gonna be a clean,
crisp break.

- How wide will that band be?

- Yet to be decided.

- Maybe it’s the scale
of a cummerbund.

- That’d be nice.
- I’m very excited. Carry on.

As you know, he’s your mentor,

And he will not
be judging your look.

He does get one tim gunn save
each season,

Which allows him to bring back
an eliminated designer

If he disagrees with the judges.

All right, let’s start the show.

- The volume of the ruffle
looks perfect to me.

The structure of her jacket
fits her perfect.

I’m happy I cut the hem up
shorter to make it knee-length.

It looks more sophisticated
and classy.

- The top flows and floats
behind her beautifully,

And the pants are sharp, crisp,
and they look really well

Finished and expensive.

The color story
and the silhouettes

And the masculine elements
of mine and kini’s work really,

Really play to our strengths.

[Both laugh]

- I love the look.

It’s something completely
different than what i’ve done.

I was a little concerned that it
might look a little top-heavy,

But it didn’t read that way
at all.

- She looks good.
The color’s great.

There’s nothing I could say that
I would want to change about it.

I know i’m not going
home for this.

- I think that sam and i’s
looks are the most cohesive.

It was definitely
the same woman.

- The fabric choice
was perfect.

The way it catches the light is
exactly what I wanted it to do.

Dress is super cute.
It’s super me.

I would totally wear it.

I know lots of girls
that would totally wear it,

And i’m really comfortable
with that.

- The two looks
look great together.

They look chic.
They look modern.

They’re different
from everybody else’s,

But I think that’s a good thing.

- I feel like my design
in relation to the others

Is a lot darker,

But I think that it’s one
of the more artistic,

Different ones.

- Yeah, you can still see it.

- If you get a close-up look,

You go,
"oh, it’s actually cotton.

Oh, it’s actually lace,

And there’s some printing
on it."

It is exactly
what I like to do in fashion.

- I can see
it’s a little unfinished.

My draping is not one
of my strengths.

I have gone for something
different this time,

But I have not been able
to finish it to the level

That it needs to be finished,
so that’s one of my concerns.

- I didn’t get a chance
to finish my look.

All the things
that make for a good design,

I totally ignored.
This is not one of my proudest

Moments as a designer.

a introverted, artistic type,

And she decided
to run away from it all,

So she ends up in japan,

Where she finally
breaks out of her shell,

And it allows her to meet
the man of her dreams.

- Or the corpse of her dreams.

I don’t think elvira
would even wear this.

- I had a gothic wedding,
but it’s kind of like a parody.

I’m having a hard time
not laughing a little bit.

It’s very cliche.

- Can you tell us who did what?

- I did this one.

- I did the bride, yes.

- I actually like both
looks a lot.

It is goth,
and it is funereal a bit,

Instead of wedding.

Now, the party dress,

I feel like, could have been
a little bit sexier.

- I really love how it looks
almost like it was painted.

- I think that’s
very well done.

I mean, you created
your own pattern.

I actually don’t mind
this very dramatic reveal,

But I do think that the sleeves
are overpowering her.

like the long dress.

I think it would look amazing

for our untraditional wedding,

It was gonna be a g*y marriage,
and she’s a very strong,

to play off of that,

So I created this dress,

The ceremony,

And I just wanted to do
something tailored on the top

And more feminine on the bottom.

- And then I did the reception,

Which was, she’s getting out
of this couture kind of number

And getting more loose,

And she’s wearing a tuxedo pant,
and that’s

Where we went to on the wedding.

- You guys
did an incredible job.

This was the best of the best
for me on the runway,

And I think
this is the dream team.

- It is a very good play
on masculine-feminine.

seems effortless.

I think, kini, your girl--
the appendage

Might be a little overpowering,

Like she’s the flamenco dancer
and this is the bullfighter.

- The clothes look impeccable,

when it walks on the runway,

It was gorgeous.
- It was definitely my favorite.

I rarely wear pants,
but when I do, they have

To be exactly like that,
high-waist, you know, classic.

I loved it.

I would wear both
of these outfits.

- Our bride is
a rock star’s daughter.

She’s kind of rebellious,
a little outside of the box

When she dresses,
so we wanted to do color.

We wanted to do something
really flirty, girly,

And a little different.

- So I did the wedding dress,
which was soft and flowy.

It had a little airy feel to it.

And char did
the reception dress,

Which has movement to it.

So, when she dances, you know,

She can twirl and enjoy herself.
