01x09 - Julie in a Homeless Shelter?

Post by bunniefuu »

Previously on

The real world...

Thanks for the welcome home,

Guys.

And yes, I got myself a date.

What's his name?

Charles.

What I think about julie

Is that she's sincere about

Trying to understand and trying

To help people.

This is the true story...

True story.

Of seven strangers...

[Laughter]

Picked to live in a loft...

And have their lives taped...

To find out what happens...

What?

When people stop

Being polite...

Could you get the phone?

And start getting real.

The real world.

[Dog barks]

I was on the telephone,

And charles had called.

And I was like, "well,

Norman's not here."

And julie was like,

"Who is that?

Who is that?"

She was whispering.

I said, "some dude named

Charles.

I don't know who it is."

And she was like, "no.

You keep him on the phone.

That might be norman coming up

The street.

Oh, god, norman will die if he--

You know, charles called

And he wasn't here."

But norman came in.

I was like,

"Somebody named charles."

He snatched the phone

Out of my hand.

He was so happy.

I'm just worried about norman

Getting hurt.

I don't agree, like, when

You're really interested in

Someone that you just, like,

Say, "okay, I'm really

Interested in you,"

And make a schedule with

Other people.

I understand that,

But it's like,

What would it take for this guy

To make you happy?

I mean, you already know

That he's not going with those

Other people he was even

Thinking of going about--

You know, to the rally.

He's screwing them over too.

I'm confused and completely

Disillusioned.

And I don't know kind of, like,

What the dynamics of the

Relationship are yet.

I don't know if it's, like,

Recreational dating or, like,

Really serious dating.

And I'm kind of, like,

In the serious mode.

I definitely, like, bit a little

Too much, you know, more

Than I can handle.

[Dramatic guitar music]

[Dog barking]

Last sunday, we were in the

Park, and julie was walking

The dog.

And later that day, she told me

That she had came into one of

These reaganvilles where,

You know, everyone has kind of

Been thrown out their homes

And evicted,

And they live in cardboard boxes

On the river,

Which is a common thing here in

New york.

[Dramatic instrumental music]

What kind of dog is that?

It's a great dane.

She's big.

Do you want to pet her?

She'll bite me.

No, it's a really nice dog.

She's never bit anybody.

Really sweet dog.

Come here, gouda.

She's big.

She's too big.

No, she's pretty, though.

Thank you. Her name's gouda.

Who?

Gouda.

What's your name?

I'm julie.

I'm darlene.

Nice to meet you.

Like, where'd you get

All your stuff?

Well, from the midnight run.

And the raven truck, it's this

Food--the trucks that come

And feed us, and they give us

Clothes.

That's basically it.

How long have you been living

Down here for?

It's going to be a year.

A year?

Uh-huh.

Oh, yeah.

Where's your family?

Well, my mother, she lives on

Th street.

But me and her don't get along

Too well.

So what are you gonna do?

I mean, are you just gonna live

Down here?

Well, I've been trying to

Look into an apartment,

But it's hard to find one,

You know, 'cause I'm on welfare,

And my welfare only allows me

$ For rent.

And an apartment is, like--

One room I need--and it's, like,

$ A month.

So what are you supposed

To do?

That's what I want to know.

I don't know.

One thing I think about julie

Is that she's really sincere

About trying to understand and

Trying to help people.

It was good what she did,

Because she at least showed

Darlene that someone in the

World cared about her, you know,

Because darlene, she's like

A lot of people who are homeless

Or who are on drugs.

It's like, you're at that point

Where you just don't think

Anyone cares.

I want to be like I used to

Be.

How is that?

[Laughs]

A lot of fun with a lot of

Boyfriends.

[Both laugh]

Seriously.

So are you gonna see him

Again?

Are y'all still...

[Laughs] we still okay.

But I was thinking about going

Uptown to go get him, but I

Don't want to go uptown, because

If I go uptown, then...

Somebody gonna offer me some

Drugs, and I'll end up

Taking it, most likely.

So I'd rather stay down here

And eat.

Do people steal things from

You down here?

Well, basically, they steal

From each other.

Like, it's--i don't know who it

Is, but it's somebody going

Around stealing my food.

And they stole smoky's tv

And his radio

And some of my clothes.

It's like that.

We call him the night stalker,

Because he come by while you

Sleeping or while you're not

Home, and he take your stuff.

Do you ever steal stuff from

Anybody?

No.

I wasn't raised like that.

What julie did was a small

Thing, but at least it was

Something, you know,

Because it's really

Disheartening in new york city

To see so many people who just

Act like homeless people are not

There.

And I just think if more people

Would at least take the time

To, like, you know, give

Or, you know, at least have

A conversation with, you know,

Some of the people who have to

Live on the streets because they

Have nowhere else to go, that

Would make a big difference.

Well, what if I spent the

Night with you one night down

Here?

You can.

Can i?

Yeah.

That'd be cool with you?

Yeah, sure. Why not?

Would anybody care?

If you stay the night?

No.

People in the loft kept

Asking me did I hear what julie

Was going to do.

And I got to admit, my feelings

Were mixed, and they still are

Kind of mixed, you know,

Because on the one hand,

I think it's really admirable

That she would do something

Like that, you know?

But on the other hand,

How much can you really learn

In one night?

This is about real change,

And real change doesn't happen

In one election or in one state.

It takes a dedication and a

Commitment and a moral purpose.

[Rock music]

People are starving.

They're dying of A*DS.

They don't have hope.

[Siren wailing]

[Dramatic rock music]

Jerry, jerry, jerry,

Jerry, jerry, jerry,

Jerry, jerry.

[Laughs] thank you.

Hey, thanks. What a crowd.

What support.

We the people

Are taking this government back.

So yeah, I went over to my

Old voting place.

I voted four years ago with--

For dukakis.

It's always neat to go.

I thought brown was the best

Choice,

Although I kind of wavered

Between him and clinton,

Because clinton--i don't know--

Might hold up against some

Things better than jerry brown.

The day that we were going to

Paint the mural, it was just a

Completely kind of stressful

Day.

I wasn't really too psyched

About what was happening with

Brown, and I was taking it kind

Of to even a personal note that,

You know, I'm just, like,

Thinking, "god, this ozone hole

Above our heads is just gonna

Get larger and larger and

Larger, and there's

Just gonna be more and

More people who are gonna suck

Up more and more resources."

And I just kept seeing doom.

Brown came in third.

I'm real disillusioned at

This point.

I mean, I did vote, but I wrote

In someone's name.

I look at the candidates,

And I really don't see much of a

Difference.

$ A person with an

Number, ---.

That's it.

Thank you very much.

We still wanted to paint

Jerry brown's number, you know?

We still felt like he was the

Best candidate, so why should

We stop supporting him?

We went ahead and painted his

- Number.

[Upbeat music]

I think that the - number

Is kind of a symbol of trying to

Start a grassroots kind of

Position.

We're going crazy.

You are out of control!

Ah!

Norman!

Oh, my god, becky, there's

Something on your head.

Get away. No!

[Yells]

[Laughter]

The idea of painting the

- Number was kind of a

Collective thing.

You know, I think that art is a

Really great way to express

Oneself and also express each

Other in a group situation.

It was a really great release,

I must say.

I really needed to get that

Paint out and just throw it.

Well, my parents aren't real

Excited about me going.

You know, they were just like,

"Why do you want to be in that

Big crowd?"

You know, "you don't know

Anybody who's had ab*rtion,"

And "nobody has ab*rtion,"

And "they're bad."

I don't think they were

Surprised that I would want to

Go, but they weren't real

Supportive of it.

[Upbeat rock music]

[Chuckles] the van ride down

To washington, norman,

Every time he would go faster,

I mean, , , , , on,

Each was a warp.

Warp . Warp .

And he was just flying.

[Siren wailing]

And a cop pulls us over and

Was like, "I want to see your

License, your registration,

Everything."

This is bad.

I did explain this to the

Policeman, where we were going.

He said, "well, you know, I'm

Sympathetic with your cause,

But that's not why I pulled you

Over.

It's because you were speeding."

Are they getting tickets back

There as well?

What happened?

No, I'm speeding and causing

Dangerous situations and causing

Everyone else to speed.

[Laughs]

I'm just a trendsetter.

He's going to give me a ticket.

Oh, [bleep].

It's for a good cause.

Yeah, it is.

Listen, this is a ticket for

Speeding.

It's out of edison township

Court.

You know the speed limit's ,

Right?

Have a nice day.

[Upbeat music]

You know, I was amazed that

There were so many people

And, you know, just kind of in

Awe at first.

But it wasn't until, you know,

You got up to the front and

Looked behind you that there was

Just tons and tons of people.

For the largest imaginable

March here today.

[Cheers and applause]

Right before we left, they

Had announced that million

People had showed up.

And it was just packed the whole

Way from the capitol building to

The washington monument.

Getting a good view?

Yes, great view.

That was a powerful kiss.

You almost threw me over.

When we went down to the

March in washington, the last

Thing that I expected to see in

A million people was charles,

Who I had tried, like, the night

Before to, like, get together

With and spend some time with,

Because he was someone that I

Just found extremely fascinating

And really interesting.

And unfortunately he had made

Other plans.

And here I show up in

Washington, and just, wham.

I'm not even ten minutes in

Washington, and there he is.

And I was like, "this is
