-[Paige] Hi. -Hi.

You look beautiful.

Oh, look at you. [laughs]

Thanks.

Oh, I don't believe it.

[laughs]

Are you ready for a real date?

Dinner, music, meaningful conversation.

Hm?

-Meaningful conversation? -Yeah.

Oh, I'll try anything once.

[theme music]

[music continues]

[narrator] Previously, on Knots Landing...

You were taken off the MacKenzie case, Tom.

I don't want you seeing his daughter.

-Nothing from Tom Ryan? -No.

[Tom] Her father is back on the case.

He is digging into Oakman Industries

in a major way

and the only way I'm gonna be able

to find out what is happening is through her.

What has MacKenzie got?

I've got a name.

[Mack] Pomerantz. Who's Pomerantz?

Somebody who has something against Oakman Industries

and has disappeared.

You are saying that I gave Pomerantz's name to Mackenzie?

Is that what you're saying?

I'm saying even I would consider

feeding Pomerantz's name to Mackenzie

to make sure he stayed interested

if it meant I get to continue barfing his daughter.

[theme music]

Wild greens and baby lettuce.

Duckling in a black bean sauce.

And for dessert, creme brulee.

Mmm. My favorite.

You know, I'm beginning to worry about you.

-Why? -[telephone ringing]

You're too perfect.

[telephone ringing]

-Hello? -Tom, Mack.

-I found Pomerantz. -What?

I don't have a lot of time to explain.

I'll meet you outside your apartment in ten minutes.

Um, uh...

Did I catch you at a bad time?

Actually, yeah, you did.

I'm sorry, pal. Bring your passport.

I don't have one.

Well, your driver's license will be fine.

F-for what?

We're going to Canada. Don't tell anyone.

Meet you outside in ten minutes.

Right, okay.

[dramatic music]

Who was that?

Uh, my partner.

-I gotta go. -Right now?

Yeah. It's work.

What about dinner and our meaningful conversation?

[whispering] I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you.

Well, listen, why don't you stay and eat, okay?

Because I'd hate to waste all the food.

Well, how do I know that you're really going to work?

What do you mean?

Well, do you realize that you could be called away

anytime day or night, and I have no way

of checking up on you?

It's very convenient.

I'd say it was inconvenient.

Wouldn't you?

Well, it's a good thing that I have a trusting nature.

When will you be back?

-Tomorrow, I hope. -Oh.

What are we gonna do about Michael and Eric?

I don't know.

What was Michael thinking of?

He wasn't. That's the problem.

[instrumental music]

I gotta go.

-Bye. -Bye.

[Karen] Mack.

-Be careful. -Yeah.

Alright.

We'll be alright. It'll work out.

Sure.

[music continues]

MacKenzie says he found Pomerantz.

That's ridiculous. Pomerantz is dead.

Yeah, well, not according to MacKenzie.

-Maybe he's setting me up. -I don't think so.

-Listen, he's here. I gotta go. -Keep me informed.

[Tom] Yeah.

[dramatic music]

[sighs] Damn.

-[Tom] Toronto? -Yeah.

He's using the name Strauss.

Neil Strauss.

-You got an address on him? -Yeah.

Let's see what you got here.

You know, I just thought having a cop with me wouldn't hurt.

I don't have any jurisdiction in Canada, though.

Well, I mean, your training. I can use the background.

Oh.

Why the rush? Why couldn't we just left in the morning?

Hey, those Oakman jerks

have been two steps ahead of me from the beginning.

I'm not gonna let it happen this time.

What about the doctor? What if he tips off Pomerantz?

I got that covered.

[playing harmonica]

See, right after that

I usually go in "Ain't Misbehaving"

but I'm thinking about reordering the whole set

going to something a little bit hotter.

What do you think?

This is kidnapping.

Oh, doctor.

I didn't know you were so conversant with the law.

I'm a first-year law student myself.

The other day my professor was asking me

what was the penalty

for falsifying a death certificate.

You know, like if you go to a foreign country

live under an assumed name...

I didn't know.

I was thinking about going to the library

but seeing as you know so much about the law

you did check it out

before you signed Pomerantz's death certificate,

didn't you, doctor?

What is the penalty?

Uh-huh.

So why don't we just chill out until Mack calls?

Now, about my act.

Do you think I ought to stay bluesy or get hot?

[playing harmonica]

Hey, do you wanna know

what Olivia's idea of compromise is?

So if whatever I'm doing is bugging her

I'm supposed to stop.

And Olivia is a woman who's very easily bugged.

-Do you know where she is? -At her girlfriend Janis'.

See, I don't even know where Linda is.

And if I did, I don't know if I should talk to her.

Of course you gotta talk to her.

What about Eric?

What about Eric? What about you?

Linda made a mistake when she married Eric.

You shouldn't have to pay for that.

Yeah, but how would you feel if you were Eric?

I mean, imagine if Olivia said

"Harold, I made a mistake.

I'm really in love with your brother."

-Punch his lights out. -See?

Because I realize I made a mistake.

I mean, if she didn't love me

why would I wanna be with her anyway?

Do you still love Olivia?

Yeah.

Does she love you?

[sighs] I don't know.

She won't talk to me.

[soft music]

[knocking on door]

[knocking on door]

Yes?

-Hi, is Tom in? -No, he's not here right now.

Oh, is he gonna be back soon? I'm Tom's partner.

His partner?

Yeah. Didn't he tell you about me?

Must be afraid of the competition.

You're Paige, right?

Yeah. You're Ricardo?

I bet he didn't tell you I was this cute.

Oh, here. Hold on.

Did you call about an hour ago?

No, I was just down the street having dinner.

I thought I might stop and say hello.

Tom left an hour ago.

He said he was going to work. He told me his partner called.

Oh, well, it must have been his undercover partner.

There's no telling how long they'll be.

-I better get going. -Wait a minute.

Did you ever arrest that man who mugged me?

Because nobody called me down to the station to identify him.

I don't know anything about it.

Well, Tom said he was an informant for you.

Tom must have forgotten to tell me.

He called you as soon as it happened.

Maybe called but I wasn't there.

But he was on the phone for five minutes.

He said everything was taken care of.

He probably left a message and I didn't get it.

I'll ask Tommy about it tomorrow,

but I really have to go.

-Goodnight. -Goodnight.

-Hi. -Hi.

Can I come in?

Yeah.

Eric hasn't called me.

-Has he... -Called me?

No.

-Do you know where he is? -No.

Are you gonna try to find him?

Look, if you're trying to make me feel bad

I feel bad enough already.

I'm not trying to make you feel bad.

Well, good, because this is not my fault.

I'm not saying this is your fault.

-But you blame me. -[sighs]

Whatever happened... between you and...

Linda. You can say her name.

...is your business.

But what happens between you and Eric--

Mom, he is not gonna talk to me.

[whispering] Well, you better make the effort.

Because I only have two sons.

And you only have one brother.

Hi, Olivia.

Hi.

[Olivia] Harold asked you to come here, right?

No, I...

He probably complained about me.

What did he say?

No, I just came here to see Michael.

[Harold] Hi.

[Karen] Oh, hi, Harold.

I only came to pick up a few things.

-A few things? -Fine.

Fine. How you doing? Thanks a lot.

-How was your day? -[Olivia] Don't start.

I've been trying to call you for two days.

There's nothing to discuss.

You mean you don't wanna try and work this out?

-Work what out? -Mom...

I'm not gonna spend the rest of my life

in a dump arguing over the price of soda

and having to take the bus to work

because we can't afford a car that runs.

You know what your problem is?

[chuckles] You're spoiled.

No, my problem is you.

Well, there's a fast solution to that problem.

There's the door.

What are you gonna do

about all your other problems, Princess, huh?

You're gonna go crawling back to mommy?

Olivia! Come on. Harold.

[Harold groans]

Stay out of it, mom.

What's happened to everybody?

[woman on PA] Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

We are now reporting flight 137 to Toronto.

All first-class passengers and employees...

[indistinct chatter]

You know, I forgot to call Paige.

What about?

I'm having lunch with her tomorrow.

If I don't call her, she's gonna k*ll me.

-[laughs] You got that right. -So I'll be right back.

Yeah, there's a phone right there.

Oh, I don't have any change.

-I-- -I have change.

-Here. -Thanks.

-Hello. -[Tom] Paige, hi honey.

It's me, Tom.

Listen, I'm gonna have a problem with tomorrow.

-Where are you? -I'm at the airport.

Tommy, don't fill her in on the details.

Explain to her when you get back.

Yeah, honey, I can't have lunch with you tomorrow.

What does MacKenzie know?

I'm not sure, babe.

It's work.

Honey, of course I care about you.

Honey, there's a room full of people here.

Don't do this to me, okay?

He's living in Toronto under the name of Neil Strauss.

He's at 340 Cypress Lane.

Find out if Pomerantz has anything.

If he does, get it and k*ll them both.

Both?

I'm tired of screwing around with MacKenzie.

If we k*ll Mack, you're gonna have cops

crawling all over you.

-Then make it an accident. -[Mack] Tommy.

I gotta go.

[dramatic music]

I think Tom has lost his objectivity.

[sighs] What does that mean?

He's head over heels for Paige Matheson.

You expect him to k*ll her father?

If he kills her father

he'll be able to date her anytime he wants.

Does Tom see it that way?

[woman on plane] ...which would be followed

by our dinner service.

The choices this evening are grilled swordfish...

[Mack] This is on me, my friend.

-No. -Hey, I got this.

It's the least I can do. Here you go.

Thank you. Oops.

Well, here is to Law enforcement everywhere.

-Oakman, beware. -Amen.

[woman on PA] Passenger Donna Mistandria

and passenger Claire Donovan...

Hey, was Paige sore when you cancelled?

-A little bit. -Well...

When we get back, I'll give her a call and tell her all about it

and get you off the hook.

-Thank you. -[Mack laughs]

Are you two getting along?

-I think so. She's a great girl. -Yeah.

I can't tell you how glad I am that you have worked things out.

You know I...

Until you showed up, I didn't think anyone

was good enough for my daughter.

-[Tom laughs] -Is that a laugh?

You had to see the clowns that she was going out with.

Lucky for me, I'm so terrific.

Well, just today they're just so many people

that just care about themselves, you know.

"What's in it for me? Forget about helping others."

"How do I benefit?"

It's just nice to see someone

who's trying to make a difference.

I think you overestimate my good side, Mack.

[Mack] Hey, Tommy.

Today, I think being a cop is pretty damn noble, you know?

Here you are helping me because I asked

not because someone's paying you.

You know...

I never got along with Anne's father.

Paige's grandfather. He never gave me a chance.

No, I just don't wanna treat my daughter's friends

the way he treated me.

Tommy,

if you ever need help or you have a problem

you come and see me.

Thanks.

[chuckles] Sorry to be so sentimental.

I guess it's the hour.

Well, I'm gonna make a run to the men's room

and then come back and get a couple of winks.

[sighs]

You look really beautiful tonight.

[chuckles] Yeah, right.

Well, why did you say that?

You just feel obligated to say nice things to me.

You're worried about me.

[sighs] You're absolutely right.

I've never seen you look worse and I hate like hell

having to spend a whole evening with you.

Now that we got the pleasantries out of the way,

let me order something.

[Gary] How about something... really crazy?

Something fattening.

[eerie music]

Uh...

-I... -Oh, come on.

A few thousand calories won't k*ll you.

-Well... -Not hungry?

[sighs] I could eat a horse.

No, I'll draw the line at eating horses.

I'm not eating anything that wears shoes.

[laughs]

[chuckles]

-Would you like some coffee? -Oh, no.

It's way past my bedtime.

-I had a great time. -Me too.

-Can we do it again? -What?

Can we go out again sometime?

[sighs]

I'd love to.

Great.

Goodnight.

Goodnight.

[dramatic music]

[woman on PA] Ms. Donovan. Ms. Claire Donovan.

Please meet your party at gate 24.

-Next. -Hi.

Are you a USA citizen?

Yes, I am.

I need a driver's license or a passport.

Yeah, I know.

-I don't have my wallet. -You don't have your wallet?

Oh, I must have left it on the plane.

-Want me to go look for it. -No, wait here.

Uh... No, don't wait. Go ahead.

If Pomerantz's there, hold him for me.

I'll be right back to take care of this.

[music continues]

Thank you.

[woman on PA] Mr. Cornelius. Mr. Jeff, Cornelius.

Please report to the information desk.

Wow.

[woman 1] I understand.

Give me a little credit, okay?

Yeah.

I'll call you back.

That was my brother.

-The lawyer? -Yes.

He just found out that one of his clients

is about to initiate a hostile takeover

of some genetic engineering company called Petramco.

-I don't understand. -Nobody knows about it yet.

The stock price in Petramco is $15 a share.

[laughs] When the word gets out

the price will go through the roof.

If we buy stock now, we will make a bundle.

What do you mean "we"?

My brother and I can't buy this stock.

It's trading on insider information.

If you buy it

no one's gonna know you were in on it.

What do you say?

I mean, it sounds like the deal of a lifetime.

It is.

I've got 5000 to invest. How much do you have?

Bobby, it's Harold.

Harold? Harold Dyer?

I thought you dropped off the planet.

I did.

-I need some help. -sh**t.

I need some quick cash, man.

-How soon? -Yesterday.

But there's a college game tomorrow night.

State versus UNV.

Take UNV plus ten.

There's a player on State who's shaving points.

How solid is this?

Listen, pal, if it doesn't happen this way

there's gonna be a player on Staters walking funny.

Do you think you can front me the cash for the bet?

No, but if you're looking for work, I know some people.

No, no, no. I'll handle it, okay?

-I'll talk to you. -Yeah, later.

Okay.

She cut you off completely?

She gave me this long talk about making it on my own

and I have been trying, I really have, Gary

but I collect coupons

and I worked overtime at the department store.

but... it's just food and rent are so expensive.

Why didn't you call me?

I couldn't. I couldn't.

Harold would die if I told somebody we're having trouble.

But the problem I'm facing is my school tuition.

We just can't get it together.

I told him I would get a student loan

but they turned me down.

-I don't know what to do. -How much is tuition?

With books and everything, six thousand dollars.

But I'm not asking you for the money.

I just... if you could cosign for the loan or something...

I-I'm desperate.

You don't have to take a loan.

Gary, I don't wanna take that money from you.

I'll make you an interest-free loan.

-Gary... -Ah, it's just a loan.

You pay me back when you're out of college

and making a million dollars bucks.

-You are so incredible. -Yeah, yeah.

Yup.

So, you haven't told me.

how you going to make your million bucks?

-What's your major? -I'm a business major.

Oh, your mother was good at business.

Oh, yeah.

Of course, she didn't have your integrity.

Now, with bills and everything

you're gonna need a lot more than just tuition

so there's ten thousand dollars.

[chuckles]

Twenty-five hundred dollars?

Yeah, that's how much more my friend needs

to buy the option on this property.

Then we could take the option, turn it around and sell out for

twice as much.

Somebody else is already interested in it.

Sounds like a great deal.

The only problem is I need the cash today.

It's not a problem.

It's a branch office on my bank on the first floor.

Let's go.

-You're a lifesaver, pal. -Sure.

[instrumental music]

[suspenseful music]

Hey Tom. Glad you could make it.

What are you doing here?

I thought you might need some help.

-Does Willis know you're here? -He sent me.

[sighs] Great.

I like having a psychopath backing me up while I'm at work.

It adds a lot of excitement to my day.

How did you get that through airport security?

I'm a professional.

Let me tell you something.

If you get in my way, Joe, I'm going to drop three bodies

in the river instead of two, do you understand me?

[knocking on door]

-W-what are you doing? -We're here to k*ll Pomerantz.

-Remember? -Right, right.

He would not knock on his own door, Joe.

Now put that away and get out of sight.

-Hi. How you doing? Any luck? -He's not here.

Oh, come on. Do you think he skipped?

No. Place is neat. Doesn't look like he packed.

-Did you find anything? -No, nothing yet.

M-Mack. Mack.

[Tom] That's the bathroom. There's nothing in there.

Check the closet here. I haven't been in there yet.

I'm glad to see you got out of customs.

I thought they really had you there for a while.

[Mack] Yeah.

They found my wallet in the trash.

Somebody must have stolen it on the plane.

It's terrible. W-what did they take?

Money.

Well, I got money.

Hey, Mack.

Come here. Look at this.

-What? -Look at this.

[Tom] He had an appointment.

[Mack] "One o'clock, 520 market."

I've got his photo. Why don't we go...

Let's stake the place out.

[Mack] We don't know the disappointments for today.

Well, i-it can't hurt.

I mean, what if it's somebody from Oakman?

Fine. Hey. You got 15 minutes to get there.

Okay, it's worth a shot.

Yeah, I'll stay here.

[Tom] Alright.

How do you want me to handle this?

W-what do I say?

-Look, you stay here. I'll go. -Okay.

If he shows up here just hold him until I get back.

Great. Take some money.

Thanks.

[Mack] Tom, be careful.

I don't like the way this feels.

Why didn't you k*ll him?

Because Pomerantz agreed to talk to him.

I don't think Pomerantz wanted to carry on

much of a conversation with a dead man.

He's kind of one-sided, don't you think?

You said Pomerantz agreed to talk to MacKenzie?

You didn't tell that to Willis.

I didn't tell that to Willis

because I was standing in a public airport

with MacKenzie breathing down my neck.

Well, Tommy, I don't know about you.

Alright, fine. Go ahead.

Go k*ll him. Go k*ll Pomerantz.

Do me a favor, k*ll your mother while you're at it too, okay?

Because she's gonna be embarrassed as hell

when she finds out how stupid her son is.

What is wrong with you?

Don't you think t-that Pomerantz is some kind of insurance?

If we k*ll Mack before we find out

what Pomerantz has

ten to one says it becomes public property

and brings us all down, you and me included, Joe.

And if that happens, I'm gonna make sure

Willis knows who screwed this up.

There's a coffee shop across the street.

Do me a favor, go have yourself a donut or something, alright?

Get serious. I'm not leaving.

Joe, you've worked with Pomerantz.

He knows you. He doesn't know me.

If I'm going to find out what he's got, he's got to trust me.

He's not gonna trust me

with a k*ller with an IQ of 40 standing at my side.

Enough with the stupid jokes or I'm gonna snap your spine.

I'm only hired to do one thing, Tom.

But I do it very well.

[menacing music]

-Was he there? -No, nobody, nothing.

I've gone through this whole place.

I haven't found a clue.

You know, what if he did skip?

He didn't take anything with him.

No, he wouldn't, not if he was in a hurry like that.

[sighs]

-Frank, how's the good doctor? -Oh, he's fine.

We've been discussing music and points of law.

Is there any way that he could have made

a phone call or gotten a message out?

[Frank] No way.

You haven't found Pomerantz yet?

You stay put. I'll call you.

-You got it. -Thanks.

-What? -I guess we wait.

-[knocks on door] Hey. -Hey.

-Here is my contribution. -Oh, great.

Wait a minute, I thought you said

Meg's school was collecting used things for the sale.

They are, she outgrew this before she even got

a chance to wear it.

Well, save it for somebody as a gift.

-Oh yeah, well, maybe yeah. -It's gorgeous.

-Look at this. Aww. -Meg's birthday dress.

I should keep this.

Nah. I already have boxes. Everything's up in the garage.

Things that... Laura bought her.

Oh, and this is the dress Mack bought her

for her first portrait.

I don't remember that one.

She never wore it

because I bought her this.

[laughs]

I love them.

Well, maybe I'll just donate the toys.

My goodness, you didn't have to clean out

your house to help me out.

Well, I didn't.

I needed to make room for Danny anyway.

Oh.

Ooh.

You don't like him either, do you?

I didn't say that. I hardly know him.

Anyway, you're the one who's marrying him.

Karen.

What?

I want my friends to be honest with me.

I am.

I don't know him well enough to know if I like him

or I don't like him.

But I want you to like him.

I wanna like him too.

[sighs] You know, I never thought

that I would be married three times.

It's just so... not me.

I mean, I'm divorced twice

and I-I'm marrying a man nobody else likes.

-I didn't say that. -I know you didn't.

I know you didn't.

[doleful music]

I'm scared.

I'm scared of failing at marriage again.

Val, you don't have to rush into this.

I'm not rushing, we've known each other for a long time.

But you don't have to get married.

You can just keep dating him until you're real sure.

But Karen, I am sure.

It's, it's everybody else that has the doubts.

I just want you to be happy.

Hi, honey. You know what we're doing?

We're packing things for little boys and girls

who don't have any toys.

-What are you doing? -Picking all my best toys.

Your best toys?

[Val laughs] Bye.

-Bye. -[Karen] Bye.

[upbeat music]

[Karen] Well, I guess I'll just donate some money.

Tell me you bought the stock.

Yeah, I bought a thousand shares.

-[shouting] Yes. -What happened?

They made the takeover announcement this afternoon

and Petramco went up five points

in the last two hours of trading.

[cheering]

[commentator on radio] And Sparrow gets the ball.

Sobol guarding him closely.

Sparrow passes to Margoyles

and Margoyles throws it right back.

Sparrow shoots. It's good and that's it.

The ball game is over.

Despite a very poor performance by Red Lake Center Park

Margoyles, Stater still crushes ...

-[radio crashes] -[groans]

[radio clattering]

I'm starving.

-Yeah, me too. -Good.

I'll go to the coffee shop across the street.

I wanna go get a couple sandwiches.

Yeah, good.

-I'm sick of this. -If you're bored Joe, go home.

-I didn't ask you here. -That would suit you.

Yeah, it would suit me. I don't like babysitting.

Especially a psycho.

I bet Pomerantz got windy of you two guys and skipped.

Well, you're wrong.

[Joe] Oh, it looks like our Mr. Pomerantz

has finally decided to come home.

That's him.

Neil Strauss.

-Who are you? -Metro Police.

[Pomerantz laughs]

Correct me if I'm mistaken

but I've never heard of any Canadian Metro Police.

If someone came to me offering to save my life

I wouldn't question his jurisdictional limits.

Well, you're not me, so if you don't mind.

Listen, I don't have a lot of time to explain.

I've been building a case against Oakman Industries.

And what's Oakman Industries?

Up until two months ago, your name was Reuban Pomerantz

and you worked for Oakman Industries.

Until you unfortunately had a heart attack and died.

Huh, must have eaten too much red meat.

Oakman has tracked you down.

Reuban Pomerantz is dead. Why would they care?

Because they wanna keep him dead.

And there's a man in your apartment right now.

His name is Mack MacKenzie and he's posing as an attorney.

He is from Oakman.

We came here together because he thinks

I'm working with them.

Well, how do I know you're not?

Call my station in California.

Here's my badge number and photo ID.

-Describe it. -They'll verify it.

It's safe. It's an incoming call.

They can't trace it.

-I'm getting out of here. -You're not going anywhere.

You're gonna help me set a trap for MacKenzie.

I'm afraid I don't share your confidence

I think if I go back to the United States

Oakman will k*ll me.

Come on. You faked your death.

That's a crime. You're going to have to go back.

But first you're going to have to convince

the United States authorities there was a crime.

Then they're going to have to wish you a warrant.

Then you're going to have to convince

the Canadian officials to honor the warrant.

Do you have any idea how long that red tape will take?

I want to slip away again.

And then I'll hit you over the head

and drag you back.

I'm not going.

But if you really want to get Oakman, I'll help.

How?

I took a copy of Oakman's books with me.

Anything happens to me

I controlled the pension plan.

I arranged some rather large unsecured personal loans

Those officials then defaulted on the loans.

They weren't pursued for the money

And of course, the board of directors was all made-up

I just wrote those loans off as a loss.

As long as you don't really inspect the books too carefully

it's gold mine.

And the pension fund goes bankrupt.
