10x24 - The Perfect Opportunity

Post by bunniefuu »

It was your idea that he got Murakame.

-[Paige] And it was a good idea. -It was your idea to try

and prove that Nagata was an actor.

-He is an actor or was! -[Ted] I don't need

that kind of interference. You're history.

Fired? I'm fired?

I can't tell you how disappointed I am.

-I wanna talk to Greg. -He knows.

There's nothing wrong with fantasizing.

It's perfectly normal.

Is that what you would say if Mack were doing

the fantasizing?

Mack doesn't even look at other women.

I think I'm in love with you.

I wouldn't do anything to hurt Karen.

[theme music playing]

[music continues]

[music continues]

...k*lling the driver on impact.

But it wasn't the fatality

that created today's traffic jam.

The crash sent thousands of dollars in cash.

into the air.

Dozens of motorers on both sides

of the freeway, stopped their cars in traffic

got out and chased the loose money

causing numerous minor accidents

and a tie that stretched for miles.

Police estimates as much as

$20,000 may have been picked up

by the passing motorists.

The driver has been identified as Yoshio Maeda,

an unemployed actor.

No reason has been given

as to why Mr. Maeda was traveling

with thousands of dollars in small bills.

Nor were the police at the crash site

able to determine what caused Mr. Maeda

to lose control of his vehicle.

When we return, David Spirrel will give us

a full report on the weather today

and tell you what you can expect

for the weekend.

[call on hold]

[Ted] Hello.

I suppose you're watching the same thing I'm watching.

[Ted] I can't believe we got so lucky.

-Lucky? -Yeah.

Lucky to have that guy off our back.

He would have come back for more.

And now he can't.

Ted.

You didn't do... anything foolish, did you?

No. It was an accident.

[tense music playing]

-Was it? -[Ted] Of course.

But it was terrific timing.

[Abby] I'm overwhelmed by your sympathy.

Can I help it if I feel that a great weight

has been lifted off my shoulders?

Well, we're not...

[exhaling] We're not out of the woods yet.

-Rick Hawkins needs to-- -[Ted] Hawkins?

Is this your front guy?

[Abby] Rick Hawkins.

The spokesperson for the Murakame Corporation?

He's a geologist, not a publicist,

and he's panicking

because Karen MacKenzie keeps calling

and he doesn't know what to say to her.

[door open]

Yo, blondie, who are you talking to?

Your boyfriend?

Hardly, I'm talking to Ted.

So can you help me out?

Well, that's why we're a team.

Good.

[Ted] I hear the elevators at work are acting up again.

Well, I'll have to...

See what I can do about that.

[exhales deeply]

Good night.

Don't you ever think of anything but business?

Funny you should mention that.

[Officer Teran] This is officer Teran.

[Paige] My name is...

Hillary Hire

and I'm doing an article on alcohol and drug abuse

in the acting community.

Well, we don't have statistics broken down

into that kind of subgroup.

[Paige] Well, I was calling about an actor

who was k*lled in an auto accident

the other day on the I-5,

Yoshio Maeda?

You know, the money all over the freeway?

Yes, I'm familiar with the case.

Well, TV and newspaper reports weren't clear

on whether or not he was driving under the influence

at the time of the accident.

He was not, according to the autopsy report.

Oh, well, what was the cause of the crash?

We're still working on it.

What newspaper are you with, Hillary?

Karen.

Karen, I'm leaving.

She isn't here.

Where is she?

She took Meg to preschool... Early.

So she could make the WCC meeting.

I thought you went with her to all those meetings.

I'm supposed to meet her there.

Yeah, but what are you doing here?

I thought you might want company for breakfast.

Oh, no, no, no. No.

Thank you.

Why not?

What do you think's gonna happen?

Nothing's going to happen.

Then there isn't a problem.

I think what you have in your mind

could be a problem.

Who says I have anything in mind?

Do you have something in mind?

No.

And nothing is going to happen.

I made that clear to you up in the mountains.

Why are you so tense?

[Paula] Do you want something to happen?

No.

And I think you should leave now.

I bet you're upset with yourself

because you can't stop thinking about me.

You keep wondering what it'd be like to be with me.

No.

You don't have to wonder.

You can find out right now.

It's the perfect opportunity.

Nobody's here.

Karen will never know.

[romantic music playing]

[breathing heavily]

[breathing heavily]

[Val] I don't know how I would let myself

get into this.

I haven't been out on a date.

I mean a date date-date.

Not just going somewhere with Gary

and I don't know how long.

I don't know what to do. Stop that.

I don't know what to wear.

You know, I think maybe I should just call him

and tell him I can't go.

Don't be silly.

You'll be fine.

This is Danny, the computer instructor?

Oh my God, does the whole world know?

Is he as cute as Karen says he is?

-Karen. -Well, he is cute.

I saw him out of the living room window

and he's darling.

Kind of made me wish I could date again.

[Val] I'm gonna tell Mack.

[chuckling] Okay, go ahead, tell him.

There's nothing wrong with fantasizing.

It's perfectly normal.

Is that what you would say

if Mack were doing the fantasizing?

Mack doesn't even look at other women.

Hey Val, how you doing?

-Hi. -[mouthful] Hi.

-Hi, Paula. -Hi.

So I understand you have a new boyfriend in town, huh.

I swear I agree to meet a man for lunch,

and Ginny wants to book a church.

Well, you make sure you bring him around

to meet the family before you make any decisions.

-Okay? -Get out of here.

Okay. Bye.

-[Karen] Bye -[Mack] Bye.

-Bye, Paula. -Bye.

-Mack. -[Mack] What?

Paula is going to have some petitions

and things ready for me this afternoon,

and she's going to leave them off at your office.

Why is Paula always dropping stuff off at my office?

Because it's closer to the university.

Well, what if I'm not there?

She'll leave him with Peggy.

What if Peggy's not there?

Are you going to make her drive all the way over here?

-No. -Thanks.

Bye.

[dramatic music plays]

Sensitivity to the environment,

supported by advanced technology is the cornerstone

of Murakame Corporation's philosophy.

-What do you think? -Not bad.

This guy looks familiar to you?

-I don't think so. -Well, you should.

You had lunch with him two weeks ago.

-[Greg] It's Nagata. -Nagata?

It says his name is Yoshio Maeda.

Yeah, he's an actor. Paige was right.

-Paige? -[Greg] Yeah.

She came in with a tape of some Japanese horror film

and this c*ck story about this guy being an actor

and not the head of Murakame.

Are you sure this is the same guy?

What are you trying to tell me? They all look alike?

It's Nagata, Nigiti, Nugatu. That's the guy.

Now, why would they send an actor to play them--

How do I know why they send an actor?

You're supposed to have all the information.

Well, I think it's lucky

that we're not involved with them anymore,

Well I expect a hell of a lot better research

on the next company we're doing business with.

Otherwise, you're back to selling toilet plungers.

-Shower heads -Whatever.

Do your homework.

I don't need any surprises.

[tense music playing]

[paper crumpling]

Have you ever heard of knocking?

I told you to keep your mouth shut.

-About? -I told you

that if you went to Greg about Nagata,

let him know how you lost in the election.

I warned you.

I told him about Nagata.

I didn't tell him about you.

-Did he say I did? -No.

So? I kept my part of the bargain.

Why tell him about Nagata at all.

I thought he should know.

You thought he should know.

You thought you could score some points for yourself.

Well, I just took a beating in there

because of the strange ideas you keep putting in his head.

-I put--? -Yes, it was your idea

that he got Murakame.

It was your idea to try and prove

that Nagata was an actor.

I don't like that kind of interference.

You're history.

If you tell Greg I leak that story.

Listen, Ted, if you tell him,

I'm going straight to the police

and tell'em that I saw you with Nagata just before he died.

At three o'clock at Grouson's restaurant.

I saw you get into his blue Pinto

and you drove off with him.

What's going on, Ted?

What are you trying to hide?

You're in way over your head.

Swim back to the shallow water before it's too late.

Trust me on this one.

You...

did not...

see me...

with Nagata.

What's happening with the drilling permit?

With no strong opposition from the WCC,

Hawkins thinks we should get the permits within a month.

But I have another problem.

-What? -Paige saw me with Nagata

yesterday afternoon.

-What? How did that happen? -I don't know.

Maybe she saw me in the restaurant parking lot.

I'm not sure, but she want to know

what my connection to Murakame is?

Here you go. It's for you.

Kokubo. Kokubo.

Are these people legit, or do we have

another Murakame on our hands?

Well, Rondale, in our International Trade Division

thinks that Kokubo Industries has been

a very good company, totally above board.

My friend at the State Department

says the administration is willing to assist Kokubo

on whatever way possible as long as

they do not play an overt role.

And they would greatly appreciate any outside help.

How much appreciation are we talking about?

Well, reading between the lines,

you'd be on a short list

for those being considered

for U.S. trade Rep to Japan.

Let's see what we can do about shortening the list.

Murakame sent an actor.

Let's see what these guys say.

Maybe a dancer. Maybe a singer.

Maybe a short order cook.

Did Ted ever come back to the office yesterday?

I don't think so.

Let me check, I'd forget my own name

if I didn't write it down.

Well, he told me he didn't, but I'm sure he did

and just wanted to weasel out of a...

A date he was going to take me

to this new restaurant.

[phone ringing]

Nope. He told the truth.

He was supposed to be back in by 4,

but he called in and said there was an emergency.

I guess I owe him an apology.

Please don't mention that I was checking up on him.

I'm embarrassed enough as it is.

Don't worry, I won't.

Mack.

I have to run down to the post office

and then over to McDonald and Green to pick up

those transcripts you wanted.

How long will you be gone?

Well, if I stop and eat lunch, two hours.

-Yeah. Okay. -Okay.

-Oh, hi. -Hi.

-Hi. -[Paula] Hi.

I'll be back by 3:30.

-[Mack] Okay. -Bye.

Here are the papers Karen wanted.

Alright.

I'll see that she gets them.

I must say, I think Karen's very lucky

to have such a supportive husband.

And one who's so cute.

Paula.

Well, I didn't mean to embarrass you.

You didn't embarrass me.

What, you just thought the comment was inappropriate?

Well, maybe I was a little embarrassed.

What, did you think that my ending up

in Knots Landing was just a coincidence?

Was it?

Why do you think I took the teaching position at Tech?

I don't know.

[dramatic music playing]

After you left, I went to the hotel registry

and got your home address.

And... I took my resume

and sent it to all the colleges in the area.

And I knew it would just be a matter of time

before we got together again.

We didn't get together the first time.

But you wanted to, I could tell.

I think about you all the time.

Think about your smile

and how your eyes sort of twinkle when you laugh.

I imagine what it would be like to be held in your arms.

Rest my head on your chest after we've made love.

No.

I think I'm in love with you.

I'd never do anything to hurt Karen.

Karen'll never know.

No one will ever know.

[romantic music playing]

Mack.

Mack?

Mack.

Mack, I have to run down to the post office

and then over to McDonald and Green to pick up

that transcript you wanted.

Yeah.

How long will you be gone?

If I stop and eat lunch two hours.

Yeah. Okay.

Good.

-Hi. -[Paula] Hi.

Hi.

I'll be back by 3:30.

-[Mack] Okay. -Bye.

Here are the papers Karen wanted.

Oh, well.

I'll see that she gets them.

I must say I think Karen's very lucky

to have such a supportive husband.

And?

And?

And... You know.

I think that she's very fortunate

in having someone with your knowledge

to help her out.

It's funny how things work out.

I mean, it's such a coincidence.

Yeah.

So, let me ask you,

why did you take that teaching job at Tech?

Well, I wanted to change a pace

and they had a program I was interested in.

Why?

I just wondered.

I'm sure you have a lot to do

and I've got to be going,

so I'll see you later.

Okay.

[door shut]

[Val] A picnic was such a good idea.

-[Danny] Thanks. -[Val] I love being outside.

I'm the outdoorsy type you could say.

If outdoorsy was a word.

-[Danny] Sounds good to me. -[Val] Although I...

I do jog a lot more than I bike.

[Danny] Well, they're both good for the cardiovascular system.

[Val] God, I...

I hope that you can get that grease stain

-out of your pants. -No problem.

If not, I'd like to buy you a new pair.

[chuckling] No, I mean, replace those.

It's not necessary.

No, I want to. It'll make me feel better.

It's just a pair of jeans. Besides, it was my fault anyway.

No, it wasn't your fault.

You were just trying to avoid me and you know...

Bam!

At least let me take you to lunch.

Are you kidding?

Still got... Pickles and olives.

Sounds like a great picnic to me.

Okay. Come on.

Get your bike. Come on.

Alright.

Alright?

You okay?

[chuckling] I'm fine, yes.

[Val exhales deeply]

No, I guess I'm just a little nervous.

Fooled me.

Stop that. You're just saying that.

It's just been so long since I've...

You know, been out on a date.

A date?

No, I mean a a picnic.

-You know, a lunch. -I'm sorry.

-It's too late. -For lunch?

Come on. You said a date. That makes it official.

It's too late.

[seagulls squeaking]

Actually, I was hoping it was a date.

I just didn't know where you stood on the issue.

If you can be all technical about it.

I am and you're doing great.

You know, dating is...

It's kind of like riding a bicycle.

You never forget how.

[Val laughing] Stop.

So you're a little rusty.

[both laughing]

I'm sure we can have an answer for you.

Tuesday-- The Wednesday at the outside.

[Ishida] You are most kind.

I will report back to Mr. Keto that you have been very helpful.

[Greg] It's easy to deal with people

who know what they want and can tell you so.

Have you ever dealt with a Japanese company before?

One. Murakame.

But we decided not to do business with them.

[Ishida] Murakame. I've never heard of them.

They're a Japanese investment firm out of Kobe.

I have a brother-in-law who's a banker in Kobe.

I'm surprised I don't know them.

[Ted] Oh, thank you lucky stars you don't.

It's not a company you want to do business with.

After you, Mr. Ishida.

Paige.

Hi, Bob.

You keep a copy of your expense account reports

-Don't you? -Of course, I do.

I'm really sorry and I hate to inconvenience you.

But there's been a screw up in accounting.

I need everyone's records for the last three months.

-When do you need them? -Tomorrow.

[Paige] Okay.

[speaking in Japanese]

[speaking in Japanese]

He says there's only one Murakame listed

doing business in Kobe,

and it's a fish by-products feed manufacturer.

How current are the listings?

[speaking in Japanese]

[speaking in Japanese]

[speaking in Japanese]

They're updated daily.

Can you see if it's listed in any other city?

[speaking in Japanese]

[speaking in Japanese]

[speaking in Japanese]

[translator] There's a bicycle manufacturer in Tokyo.

But there's no listing for Murakame Corporation

in all of Japan.

It's not a Japanese company.

[dramatic music playing]

[crickets chirping]

[dog barking in the distance]

[leaves rustling]

-[Paige gasps] -[hissing]

[cat meows]

[cat meows]

[reporter] Investigators still have not been able to determine

why Mr. Maeda lost control of his car.

And although the part time actor

had no criminal record,

the possibility of foul play cannot be ruled out

because of the large amount of cash in his possession.

Off the record sources indicate

that this step may be reclassified as a homicide.

Thousands of dollars

from the victim's car

were strewn across the freeway.

Pedestrians and motorists scrambled after the money.

Traffic was tied up for hours.

Police officials now say

the tragedy may not have been an accident.

[tense music playing]

[Mack] Yeah, the one with the money.

Paige, Maeda right?

Yeah, Maeda.

Yeah, what does the mechanic say?

[dramatic tense music]

What?

Yeah.

Sure.

Thanks.

-It was an accident. -[Paige] What?

[Mack] It was an old car

and the cotter pin snapped and the...

the bolt holding the steering rod came off.

[Mack] Maeda had lost control.

Well, what about the news reports?

Well, somebody jumped the g*n. It happens all the time.

These stations, they overplay a story just to get viewers.

Anyway, that was the officer

investigating the case and everything checks out.

It was an accident.

What about all that money?

Well, maybe he didn't trust banks.

Maybe somebody was paying him off.

Paying him off and then k*ll him?

-Yeah. -[Mack] Not very cost effective.

So it was an accident.

God, I feel foolish.

-I'm sorry. -Don't be.

No, really, I don't know why I got so carried away.

I just kept imagining...

I mean the Murakame people sent an actor to see us

and then he dies

and then Melcher starts acting so strange.

[sighs]

-I'm sorry. -Will you stop saying that?

He never should have threatened you

in the first place.

And these Murakame people, well,

you know, and they're so unreliable.

-I don't trust them. -Why did they get so mad at me?

-Karen. -[Karen] Well, I don't.

I wouldn't put anything past them.

Look at this baloney.

"Sensitivity to the environment

"supported by advanced technology

"is the cornerstone

of Murakame Corporation's philosophy."

Paige, why don't you spend the night here?

No, I'll be fine. Really.

You're welcome.

I know. Thank you.

I just let my imagination get the best of me.

I'm going to go home. I'm going to take a hot bath.

And I'm going to be fine.

Thank you for listening to me.

Okay.

[Paige sighs]

[both] Goodnight.

-Thanks, Mack. -Okay. Goodnight.

Goodnight.

Safe home.

Buckle up.

We still don't know why Murakame is pretending to be Japanese.

I see operating the computer has ceased to be a problem.

I guess all you needed was the right person

to help you do it.

Yeah, I guess.

I guess maybe the reason you stay up late tonight

is you're hoping that that right person might call.

I am not waiting for anyone to call, Ginny.

Oh, honey.

You know today women don't have

to sit around waiting for the phone to ring.

You got his number?

Yes, I have his number.

No, I am not going to call.

It seems a shame to wait.

Goodnight, Ginny.

[keyboard tickling]

Goodnight sweet thing.

[dramatic music playing]

Hi, it's me.

Hi. Gosh, I was hoping you'd call.

You know, it's not fair

that you've got my phone number and I don't have yours.

Gary, what are you talking about?

You have my number.

Val, sorry, I thought it was somebody else.

It's a long story. So what's up?

Well.

I need some advice.

Okay?

Okay, um...

If you met a woman

that you were interested in.

Okay?

And she was interested in you.

[Val] And you had a nice first date.

Would you think that she was too pushy

if she called you for the second date?

[chuckles]

[laughs]

Gary.

[Gary laughing]

[exhales deeply]

[sighs]

[siren wailing]

[footsteps]

[car engine starts]

[car door shut]

[both scream]

I didn't mean to scare you.

What are you doing here?

I have something for you.

Jamoca Almond Fudge. Your favorite food, remember?

I owe you an apology.

I guess this was the best way to start.

Kind of came on strong this afternoon.

I'm sorry.

Why did you say you weren't with Nagata?

The man died in a freak accident.

I just didn't want to be linked to it.

Well, why were you with him?

[Ted] To find out about Murakame.

I don't like to be conned.

Makes me look bad.

What did you find out?

[Ted] Nothing.

He wouldn't tell me who hired him.

He only gave you my name

just because he couldn't think of anyone else's.

It's very strange.

You bet. I'm just glad to be through with Murakame.

Friends?

I don't know.

It's only a pint.

I'll have a gallon on your desk first thing in the morning.

I'll see you tomorrow.

[dramatic music playing]

[Greg] I've had Marketing work up

a projected sales estimate

for the first year.

And then Accounting threw together

some numbers based on those estimates.

And we're talking a sweet deal for you.

[Greg] Would you like some caviar on your eggs?

Yeah, sure.

There you go. Help yourself.

We figure your end will be about $650,000.

That's an advance against the gross

over the first year.

$650,000?

I've already got the papers drawn up.

There will be some deductions though.

-Deductions. -Yeah.

-Would you like some--? -No.

Taxes, for instance.

It's a shame that the IRS gave up

on income averaging, didn't it?

Then there'll be lawyers fees.

You can't believe the kind of slime

that's out there wanting to steal stuff like this.

And then we got to take care of the people

who wrote the program at the beginning.

We don't want to stiff them.

And their startup costs and marketing.

Alright, alright.

What's the bottom line?

$10,000 and I never want to hear from you again.

-I own the copyright, -Not the PAT.

If you got the time and the money, sue me.

I got 25 lawyers sitting around

that can't wait to hang a guy like you out to dry.

[Greg] I'll cut you a check this morning.

Why don't you pick it up after lunch?

It's been fun doing business with you.

You couldn't choose a lighter desk?

Let's try over by the window,

Pat thought it would bring me luck

studying for the LSATs.

Well, you're going to need more than luck

to get into law school.

Let's swing it around. Just wait.

I got the support of a good woman.

[Mack grunting] Yeah.

That's it. Yeah.

[both breathing heavily]

How long have you been married?

Thirteen years.

Thirteen years? Wow.

I never thought I'd get married.

I was always too picky.

I was always finding something wrong

with the person I was seeing, you know?

Karen...

Karen was different.

She's a terrific lady.

Yeah, let's try over there by the wall.

[dramatic music plays]

[Frank grunting] Okay.

Yeah, that's great.

So why do I keep having these fantasies

about this other woman?

[Frank] Huh?

I mean.

Do you think about other women?

Of course not. I'm a married man.

Raquel Welch would have walked in this office right now,

I wouldn't give her a second look.

I couldn't care less about a drop dead body.

Beautiful legs,

[chuckling] and as far as those...

Frank, I get the picture. Thank you.

Hey, what's the problem?

As long as it's only a fantasy, what is the problem?

Abby. I'm so glad I caught you.

How much do you know about Murakame?

What do you mean, "How much do I know about Murakame?"

Well, I've been trying to contact the owners,

and it turns out that Murakame is not a Japanese company.

-Really? -Doesn't it bother you

that they lied to us

when we sold them Lotus Point?

To tell you the truth, Karen,

I was so grateful to find a...

Company who was willing to pay us a reasonable price.

I just... Assumed they were Japanese

because of their name.

I guess I was wrong.

We assume that...

Standard Oil of Ohio is an American company

when in truth it's owned by a British Petroleum.

You don't think

they're trying to deceive the American public too,

do you?

Well, as long as they're not breaking any laws,

they're entitled to their privacy.

I would think you, of all people,

would be the first one to defend that right.

[tense music plays]

Listen, I've just got so much to do here today.

If there's anything else I can do to help,

just let me know, alright?

[Abby sighs]

Karen, I'm home.

Karen?

-Hi. -Hi.

Where's Karen?

She had to run an errand.

I'm really embarrassed.

Oh no, no. These are for you-- For Karen.

No. I know that.

Well, what are you doing here?

-Karen didn't tell you? -No.

[kettle whistling]

I have to go get the kettle.

[Paula] You want some tea?

No, thanks.

[Karen] Mack.

Hi, honey.

Oh, they're beautiful.

Yeah, these are for you.

Thanks.

I'm gonna--

Oh, I forgot to tell you.

Paula's water heater broke and flooded her apartment,

and I told her she could stay here

while her landlord cleans up the mess.

So she's gonna be with us for a couple of days.

I'll go put these in water.

[tense music playing]

[Abby] Paige. Paige.

What are we going to do with you?

[tense music continues]

[shredder machine whirring]

[telephone ringing]

[suspenseful music plays]

[Paige] Michael. Hi.

I didn't think you'd be home.

Yeah, well, it's just me and Herman Melville.

I need a favor.

Yeah. What do you need?

I need to break into a computer.

What?

[door knock]

Wait a minute.

[Paige] Come in.

[man] These need your signature right away.

[Paige] Okay, Michael.

[Michael] Yeah, I can't help you break into a computer.

I thought you knew all about computers.

I didn't say I don't know how.

I said I'm not going to help you.

If you knew how important this is.

[Michael] I still wouldn't do it, Paige. It's ill*gal.

Well, do you know anybody who will help me?

Goodbye, Paige.

Here.

Can't you call it up on your own computer?

Well, the problem is not my computer,

the problem is the directory the document is in.

You see, the other day when my computer went down,

Ted let me use his and it was all set up.

So I just started typing

and I thought it was in the main directory,

but it must have been in his own

because I can't seem to locate my document

anywhere in the index.

Gee, I don't know what to tell you.

Ted's in a meeting right now.

Would you know his access code?

Oh, I couldn't give you that.

Well, of course not.

But you could type it into my computer

and that way I wouldn't know it.

Then I could just pull the document

and finish it.

Look, I can't be late with this.

Mrs. Sumner's expecting it tomorrow.

[dramatic music playing]

[Paige sighing]

Defense?

[keyboard keys clicking]

"Sensitivity to the environment

"supported by...

"advanced technology is the cornerstone

of Murakame Corporation's philosophy."

[whispering] The son of a b*tch works for Murakame.

Oh, Paige, there you are. Hi.

-[Ted] Hi. -Hi.

What are you doing?

A project proposal for Greg.

A real estate development at Santa Barbara.

You want me to take a look at it give it the once over polish?

Oh, no, no. It's fine.

I'd like to, really.

Look. I'm a little embarrassed.

But it's my first draft

and I know it's full of mistakes.

Let me work on it a bit and then I'll show you.

Well, if you need a hand with it, just give me a call.

I will.

[thrilling music playing]

Accounting has been running a record check

on everyone in the central office.

We asked the computer to locate discrepancies.

This is what kicked out.

Paige Matheson?

[Bob] I'm afraid so, Sir.

We double checked the figures.

She's been over reporting expenses

and juggling decimal points

on her financial reports

ever since she started working at the downtown office.

[Abby] This is such a shame.

[Bob] We decided to dig a little deeper

with the computer's help

and we discovered that she's been living

in one of our rental properties

and charging it to the company.

[scoffing] I don't believe it.

I wondered how she could afford that place

on her salary.

You've seen it?

No.

Is that everything?

[Bob] Yes.

Thank you, Bob.

[door shuts]

[sighs]

I'm...

I'm afraid this is going to get out.

If we keep her,

It's going to send the wrong signal

to the rest of our employees. What do you think, Ted?

I don't know what to say, I was the one who recommended her

for the promotion.

But... Tomorrow the news will be out in the office.

I've got a night flight to Washington.

Why don't you handle it?

Fired? I'm fired?

This is crazy. I didn't sign these.

I've never even seen these invoices.

This isn't your signature?

[Paige breathing heavily]

Someone must have forged it

or someone screwed up in Accounting.

Bob said there's been problems up there.

But I have not been misappropriating funds.

And I suppose you haven't been living

in a Sumner Group apartment

and then charging it to the company either?

I was just staying there

until I could find a place that I could afford.

Oh, I see. It was just a little dishonest

and a little dishonesty shouldn't be held against you.

I didn't say that.

I can't tell you how disappointed I am.

How disappointed we all are.

I wanna talk to Greg.

I'm afraid he's on a plane to Washington.

-If he knew what was going on-- -[Abby] He does know.

We talked about it before he left.

What did he say?

We're in agreement.

You can clean out your desk tomorrow.

[dramatic music playing]

Don't bother to turn in your keys.

We'll have our locks changed.

[door shuts]

[narrator] Next, on Knots Landing...

You are working for Murakame. I found your press releases.

Whatever you're doing,

I'm going to find out what is going on here.

You don't have to leave because of me.

I think I make you uncomfortable.

I think you're the one who's uncomfortable.

We're gonna sue Murakame.

Do you wanna join us in the suit?

Being sued for a restraining order

forces them to reveal the owners.

You defrauded your partners out of their holdings.

You could end up in jail and it turns out

it was all for nothing.

[dramatic music playing]

[theme music playing]

[music continues]
