08x30 - Cement the Relationship

Post by bunniefuu »

Don't say a word. I'll take care of it.

No one has to know.

I checked with the news bureau. He didn't have an assignment.

It was a plan. He went to find Jean Hackney.

If you don't tell me what's wrong,

how can I do anything about it?

I don't know what to do.

What is it?

-[knocking on door] -[Karen] Open up.

[Marsha] Who's in there?

I don't know.

[keys jangling]

But we'll soon find out.

[theme music playing]

[music continues]

Oh, my God.

[sobbing] Oh, my God.

[Olivia gasps]

Olivia?

He's dead.

[breathing heavily]

[dramatic music playing]

Come here.

Come here. Come here.

-I want-- -Don't say anything.

Don't say a word. I'll take care of it.

No one has to know.

Stay there.

[Olivia sobbing]

Don't. Don't.

Control yourself. Come on.

Come on. I'll take care of it.

I'll take care of everything, Olivia.

[Olivia sobbing]

Alright, look. Listen to me.

Listen to me. Listen.

What you have to do, is you have to go home now

and change, alright?

Go and change your clothes.

Call Eric and shopping or something.

Go to the mall, alright?

See some of your friends.

Make sure that someone you know sees you there, alright?

-Yes. -And don't tell anyone, Olivia.

Don't tell anyone about this. Just act normal, alright?

[dramatic music]

[panting]

[lock clicks closed]

[lock clicks closed]

[panting]

[breathing heavily]

[suspenseful music]

[groaning]

[grunting]

[groaning]

[grunting in effort]

[Greg] Peter, what the hell's the matter with you?

I don't like it when I can't find you,

when my phone calls don't get answered.

Now, I want you to get up to Sacramento this afternoon

before the 4 o'clock committee meeting.

And I want you to call me as soon as it's over.

Not tonight, not tomorrow, not next week,

but as soon as it's over.

Do I make myself perfectly clear?

[Abby breathing heavily]

[grunting in effort]

[panting]

[groaning]

[breathing heavily]

[grunting]

[knocking on door]

[knocking continues]

-[knocking continues] -[Abby groaning]

[knocking continues]

[tense music playing]

[Abby breathing heavily]

[knocking on door]

[Karen] Is anyone in there?

[knocking continues]

Open up.

[knocking on door]

Go to my office and ask Marsha to bring my keys.

-I don't believe this. -[banging on door]

-[knocking on door] -[Karen] Open up.

Go around to the main entrance and see if it's open.

If it is, then open the door from the inside.

Yes, ma'am.

-[Marsha] Here you go, Karen. -Good.

Who's in there?

I don't know.

[keys jangling]

But we'll soon find out.

-Why was that door locked? -I don't know.

-I just got here myself. -What happened?

-Are you alright? -I'm fine.

I-I just came in, and I heard this pounding over there.

I thought something was wrong, and I came rushing in

and knocked this big pot of coffee right off the table

and someone must have left it sitting there.

Oh, well, at least no one got hurt.

Look, we're gonna have to find out who locked that door.

Maria, please have a copy of this made

and give it to Paige.

Raul, get someone to clean this up before it stains.

You know what? I think we're gonna have to repaint the floor.

Oh, my... What in the world?

Whose coat is this?

[chuckles]

Well...

Oh, could you, uh--

I don't know... Get it... Lost and found.

[Abby sighs]

Thanks.

[Peter] This is Peter Hollister.

I'm not here right now,

so please leave a message at the tone.

[phone beeping]

Peter, hi. It's Abby.

Uh, I'm sorry we didn't see eye to eye

on everything this morning.

Maybe we can just chalk it up to, uh, experience.

Anyway, I need to talk to you about the, uh, speech

you're gonna make at the opening of the children's park,

so give me a call when you can.

Thanks. Bye.

[Karen] I'm surprised you still want him.

After the way the two of you were going at it this morning.

Well, we're in his district, you know.

I mean, we can both use the publicity.

I see.

We scratch his back, so he can scratch ours.

I prefer to think of it as mutual self-interest.

[dramatic music playing]

Monica.

Oh, I was just getting some sheet music.

-Oh, why don't I get it for you? -Oh, it's okay. I can--

Uh, this is it, isn't it?

-Mm-hmm. Thanks. -You're welcome.

Russ, come here a minute, would you?

Would you help me move these things?

[Paige humming]

-[Paige] Well, that's a good idea. -Huh?

Those look a lot better over there.

-Thanks. -[Paige] Hmm.

What happened over here?

Uh, some coffee got spilled.

-As a matter of fact, it was your coffee, Paige. -What?

It was a whole big pot of it sitting out here.

You left it, and it got knocked over.

It's not a good thing to do, you know.

Sets a bad example for the rest of the employees.

Anything else?

Yeah, as a matter of fact,

call whoever the DJ was supposed to be for tonight,

and, uh, cancel him.

We're gonna have live music all night.

You've got some customers.

[sighing]

[keypad clicking]

[phone ringing]

[ringing continues]

[somber music playing]

[sighs]

[sniffles]

[breathing heavily]

[fire crackling]

Well, the babies are asleep.

Hmm.

-What's the matter? -Nothing.

-Something's wrong. -Mnm-mnm.

You worried about Ben?

Well, now, he did call last night,

just like he promised he would.

-I know he did, mama. -Well?

Oh, sweet pea.

You're worried because of me.

Oh.

I'm the one who put this thought in your head,

because I was worried he wouldn't call.

But you said he would, and he did.

You were right.

And look at that.

It's not even nine o'clock.

I know it's not, Mama.

So, why don't you wait till you have good reason,

before you get down in the mouth?

Ben will call.

That's all there is to it.

[somber music playing]

[gentle piano music playing]

[indistinct chattering]

Alright.

You know, it's always been my dream

to make Lotus Point a place for the whole family,

and now, with the completion of the children's park,

well, I hope it'll be crawling with kids.

Yeah, but what about all those people that say, "I hate kids"?

There are places for people like that.

-Resorts. -Places.

Well, here's to the millions of kids

that are coming to Lotus Point.

You got it. [chuckles]

-Hey. -Oh, the guest of honor, huh?

-Well... -Mr. College Graduate?

-Thanks. -You're welcome.

It's Mr. College Freshman.

I don't even start classes till September.

-Oh, I'm so proud of you. -Oh, Mom.

-You decide on a major? -Yep, sure have.

-Women. Gonna study women. -Alright.

-My kind of guy. -Oh, you two.

[Paige] Good evening.

-You look great. -[chuckles] Thanks.

-Congratulations, Eric. -Thanks.

Yeah, way to go, big guy.

[Abby sighs]

[Karen sighs]

-Here you go. -Thank you. There we go.

Enjoy dinner.

[Abby] Hey, Eric.

-Hi. Congratulations. -Hi.

You're gonna make a very handsome college man.

-Thanks. -[Abby chuckles]

-Hiya, Mack. -Hiya.

-How you doing? -Hey, look, as long I--

Look, as long as I've got the both of you here together

at the same time, I'd like to--

Uh, listen, we're celebrating tonight.

No business talk, okay?

Well, it's just that tomorrow morning

they're pouring the concrete out at the children's park--

-[Mack] No business. -[Karen] No business tonight.

-Hi. -Oh, hi.

How are the-the wedding plans coming with Peter?

I decided not to marry Peter.

He dumped you, huh?

Have a nice dinner, Michael.

-I hope we're gonna hear something more lively tonight. -Yes.

-I'm in the mood. -Yeah.

Well, I'm sorry, but the sound equipment's broken.

We'll be ready for you the next time, though, I promise.

-Enjoy your dinner. -[Mack] Thank you.

-Hi. -Hi, Michael.

-How you doing? -Alright.

[loud fast-paced saxophone music playing]

[Karen gasping]

[Abby] Karen, it's alright. I'll get it.

[door shuts closed]

[Abby sighs] It's okay.

I told you, it was broken.

Sit down. It's alright.

Sit...

She almost knocked me over. [laughs]

[Abby] Can I have the phone, please?

[sighs]

Thanks.

[keypad clicking]

[phone ringing]

[ringing continues]

[crickets chirping]

[tense music playing]

[knocking on door]

Olivia, hi.

What is it?

Come on in. Come on.

What's the matter?

[sighs] I don't...

I don't know what to do.

About what?

About what?

[sighs]

Does your mother know you're here?

-You want to call her? -No.

-You want me to call her? -No.

Honey,

if you don't tell me what's wrong,

I can't do anything about it.

[sobbing] I don't know what to do.

Oh.

[Olivia sobbing]

Is it still Peter Hollister?

[Olivia breathing heavily]

Well, I know all about it.

No, you don't.

Yeah, I do. Your mother told me.

You don't know, Gary.

I-I know that he won't hurt you anymore.

That's not what I mean.

Then what is it?

Overworked and underpaid.

-Olivia. -[Olivia sighs]

-Olivia. Olivia! -[door clicks open]

-What's the matter? -I don't know.

Your brother, I guess. She can't get over him.

Gary, go after. Make sure she's okay.

I'll watch some TV.

Well, at least it's not Val.

[dramatic music playing]

[paper rustling]

[ring clattering]

[instrumental music]

[crickets chirping]

[suspenseful music playing]

[handbrake ratcheting]

You okay?

I'm alright.

You sure?

[sighs] I'm fine.

It's getting kind of late.

You can go on.

-I'm okay, really. -No, it's okay.

I'll hang around, just to make sure.

[door latch clicks open]

-Hey. -What?

Where's my good night hug?

You used to tell me everything.

You used to want to.

There's nothing to tell.

[sighs]

Goodnight.

Um, please keep the light on.

[soft music]

[Abby grunting]

[panting]

[Abby groaning]

[sighs deeply]

[whimpering]

[panting]

[sniffing]

[sighs]

[grunting]

[panting]

[grunting]

[tense music playing]

[door shuts closed]

You're working late.

What are you doing here so late?

Well, I forgot my wallet.

Oh, where do you think it might be?

Um...

Oh, right here.

Oh, I was wondering what happened to this.

So, how'd I do?

Huh?

[Paige] Well, you were at the club all day,

I presume checking on my performance.

-So how'd I do? -[sighs] Um...

Well, let's just say you're not fired.

Thanks.

Goodnight.

[door closed]

[engine rumbling]

[tense music playing]

[crickets chirping]

[tense music]

[body thudding]

[instrumental music]

[grunting]

[groaning]

[breathing fast]

[gravel crunching]

[golf kart whirring]

[tense music playing]

[crickets chirping]

[golf kart whirring]

[instrumental music]

[footsteps]

[Abby] His car.

[dramatic music playing]

[panting]

[grunting]

[grunting]

-[keys jangling] -[sighing]

[plane engine whirring]

[car engine rumbling]

[announcer on PA] The white zone is for immediate loading

and unloading of passengers only.

The white zone is for immediate loading

and unloading of passengers only.

[bus rumbling]

Olivia?

[Gary] Good morning.

What are you doing here?

Somebody had to be here.

[sighs] I'm too tired for a lecture, Gary.

Where you been?

Aren't we a little too divorced for a question like that?

[Gary] Your daughter has a problem.

-I... I know that she's been upset. -Upset?

Nah, this is a little bit more than upset.

She came out to the ranch, acted like she'd seen a ghost.

What happened?

She didn't tell you?

She wanted to, but she wouldn't.

What happened?

I don't know.

But whatever it was, I'll, uh, I'll take care of it.

Thanks for coming by.

Drive carefully.

Olivia.

Olivia. Are you alright?

[Abby sighs]

Honey.

I've taken care of everything.

No one will ever find him.

No one will ever know what happened.

[Abby sighs]

You must hate me.

What?

You must hate me.

Oh, no.

Oh, baby, no.

No, I love you.

I know, I know you love me.

But you must hate me for making you do this for me.

Oh, no, baby. I love you.

-I'll always love you. -I am not worth it.

-Yes, you are. Yes, you are. -No.

You're my baby.

No, I am not.

Yes you are. Olivia, Olivia, you are.

-Listen to me. Listen to me. -[Olivia crying]

Olivia, I know what just happened

is the worst thing that could ever happen to anyone.

But you have to hold yourself together, Olivia.

You have to stay in control.

Come on.

Come on, you can do it.

-Come on, baby. -Oh, Mom.

-Mommy. -Come on, you can do it.

-You can do it. -[Olivia sobbing]

You can do it.

Oh, baby.

Shh.

Oh, honey, it's okay.

[machine whirring]

[birds chirping]

[dramatic music playing]

[engine starting]

[Mack] I called your mother, and she's back from her vacation.

And as soon as the servants repack,

she'll be off again.

Yeah, well...

For your information, I asked her

if Greg Sumner was your father, and she said...

[scoffs] She said, "No, of course not.

I was being vindictive. Of course not."

Paige, she said that I was your father.

But how do we know that we can trust her this time?

Huh?

And what is she gonna do the next time she's in a bad mood?

Give us a call and apologize and...

I...

You were right.

We can't believe anything that she says.

Paige,

I know I'm your father.

I love you, kid.

I do.

I want to be your father.

I'm not gonna get all sentimental, Mack.

I'm sorry.

You're a nice man,

and you'd make as nice a father as the next man.

But I don't know who my father is.

And you know what?

I don't care anymore.

I'll take care of myself.

I always have.

[somber music playing]

Ben wouldn't just leave like that.

He didn't just leave, Mama. He had a plan.

I checked with the news bureau. He didn't have an assignment.

It was a plan. He went to find Jean Hackney.

-No. -Yes.

[Val] Probably not to k*ll her.

Or maybe he felt that he had to k*ll her.

But I think he really just wanted to see her

to know that she was there.

And be convinced that she wasn't a danger to us anymore.

Probably expected to find her, I don't know,

sipping daiquiris with one of her colonels.

Valene, you don't know.

I do know, Mama. I know.

When everybody else,

all the people that I love and respected,

said that Ben was dead that time in El Salvador,

I knew that he was alive, and I was right.

And when everybody else said that my babies were dead,

Mama, I knew with all my heart they weren't.

Now, I'm telling you, I was right then,

and I am right now.

Ben had a plan.

And part of his plan to make it easier for me,

to make me feel better, was to call me every night.

But ever since that first night, he hasn't called, not once.

So I know that something has happened.

You don't know that.

Mama, I am telling you, I know.

It's too soon to give up hope.

Mama, I'm not going to give up hope.

I'm going to be waiting by that phone tomorrow night at nine,

and the next night, and every single night after that,

hoping that I am wrong.

But he won't call.

Because he's not coming back.

[sighs]

Want to get married?

Yeah.

Do you want to get married?

[chuckles] Oh, yeah.

Why bother?

[chuckling] Yeah.

[knocking on door]

We have a full schedule of events

for the opening of the children's park.

Yeah, I've seen it. [sighs]

Seems an awful lot of effort

for something that we don't know will be cost-effective.

There is a part of the schedule,

the part that you're responsible for,

that hasn't been finalized.

We can't get confirmation from Peter Hollister's office

as to whether he will attend, let alone deliver a speech.

Abby, we only have a few days to schedule someone else.

Well, I'll see what I can do.

-[door closed] -[Abby sighs]

She looks just like you, you know that?

That's just a phase that she's going through, hopefully.

-[phone ringing] -[baby crying]

You're disturbing the child.

Well, we were wondering

when we'd get confirmation from Peter or his office...

as to whether he'll actually make that speech

that he promised to make for the opening ceremony

of the dedication of the children's park.

Look, if he said he was going to show up to make the speech,

he'll show up to make the speech.

If he doesn't show up to make the speech,

then I'll make the damn speech.

[steady beeping]

-[baby crying] -[Greg sighing heavily]

-Sorry. -Yeah, that's better.

Get out of the habit of using that kind of language in front of her, okay?

Damn it. Damn it. It's going to be your first word.

Don't you think I should be holding her?

-Yes. -Don't you think so?

-Watch her head. -[Greg cooing]

[Greg gasping]

[tense music playing]

[both sighing]

[Greg] ...committee meeting.

And I want you to call me as soon as it's over.

Not tonight, not tomorrow, not next week,

but as soon as it's over.

Do I make myself perfectly clear?

[steady beeping]

[phone beeping]

[Abby] Peter, hi. It's Abby.

Uh, I'm sorry we didn't see eye to eye

on everything this morning.

Maybe we can just chalk it up to, uh...

[fast forward squeaking]

[phone beeping]

[Paige] You promised to call me and you haven't.

You'd better have a really good excuse.

And it'd better be an excuse I've never heard before.

Because if you're just playing hard-to-get...

[steady beeping]

[phone beeping]

[instrumental music]

[hammer clanking]

[Karen] And this area will be for toddlers.

We'll fence it in and make it as accident-proof as possible.

No sharp edges, rounded corners,

and we'll have a weatherproof rubber mat

to, uh, cover all the concrete and--

[dramatic music playing]

-[sighs] Oh, sh**t. -What?

[Karen] Cosmetic, I guess.

Must be a settling crack.

[Karen] If it's not one thing, it's another.

I hope it's a settling crack.

Or else it could be structural.

Oh, boy, then we're really in trouble.

What do you think, Abby?

[theme music playing]
