07x23 - Distant Rumblings

Post by bunniefuu »

[theme music]

[Valene] Where is Gary Ewing's room?

At the end of the hall, room 104.

[Valene] Thank you.

[woman on PA] Dr. Campbell, please call the OR.

Dr. Herman Campbell to call the OR.

[Garrison chuckling]

-Don't make me laugh. -[both chuckling]

I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

[Gary] You've come a long way since you went down the road.

[Cathy chuckles] Yeah, maybe down a little.

-[knocking on door] -Yeah, come in.

-[Cathy] Hi. -Hi.

-Hey, there. Come on, in. -Hi.

-How's the patient doing? -Ah, great.

[both chuckle]

Well, I'm going to take off.

-Okay? -Okay.

Well, I hope you're not leaving on my account.

Oh, no, don't be silly.

I just have some things I have to do.

-[Valene] You okay? -Yeah, I'm fine.

-Come here. -[chuckles]

Bye-bye.

-I'll see you later. -[Valene] Okay.

-See ya, thanks for coming. -You be a good boy.

[chuckles]

-[chuckles] -[sighs]

Uh, if you came here to talk about the trust fund...

No, I-- I didn't.

I came here to talk about you.

Gary, I, uh, I know it's none of my business,

but this-- this racing that you've been doing...

-Seems awful dangerous. -I know what I'm doing.

Gary, I-- I know that you're not drinking now,

but sometimes I...

I think that you still feel the need for the high.

Oh, come on. You're blowing this way out of proportion.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, either way,

it's still dangerous.

I mean, you're forgetting that there are people at home

who love you and need you.

I'm not forgetting anything.

All right, Gary. All right.

I, uh, I came here today because I...

I think I know you.

And I think I know what you're doing.

I mean, I... I know about dry drunks,

and I just thought that you might need someone to help you.

You know the other day when you told me

to stay out of your life?

Yeah.

I think, you need to do the same thing here.

Okay, you're right.

I'm sorry, I just thought that, uh...

-No, you're right. -[Garrison] Now, Val.

Damn.

I'm sorry.

That wasn't kind. I know you meant well.

No, don't. It's...

You were right.

[melancholy music]

Just be careful, okay?

-Yeah, I will. -Okay.

[sniffs]

[knocking on door]

-Mr. Sumner. -Sylvia.

Well, don't tell me you were in the neighborhood.

Something like that, yeah.

May we, uh... I hear these old walls have ears.

Cozy.

I grew up in a place just like this.

-Oh, can I get you something? -Not a thing, Sylvia.

We are first naming it today, are we not, Sylvia?

-Sylvia's fine, Mr. Sumner. -Good, Sylvia.

Now, I don't want to take up a lot of your time

because I know that you are a busy woman.

I, uh...

I was having this discussion with my lawyer the other day,

and, uh, well, he's-- he's checking out some of the things

that you and Peter told us about yourselves.

Yes?

My lawyer suggests that, um...

well, rather than drag this whole mess

through litigation and all of that, uh...

A process, by the way, that, uh, wouldn't benefit anyone but him.

He suggests that I just straight up make you an offer.

An offer?

Yeah, uh, he was going to deliver it,

but, uh, I decided to bring it over myself

seeing that we had such a special relationship,

you, Peter, and I.

Well, why didn't you make the offer to Peter?

You see? Didn't I tell you that she'd ask that first?

How much, uh, is the offer?

Five million dollars.

Five million?

Five?

I thought it was two.

We're talking family here, Laura.

Now, I'd like you to look over these documents.

I want you to think about them

and then talk it over with Peter.

But I gotta warn you

that if you sign off with these documents,

you will relinquish any claim

that, uh, you might have to my... to our father's estate.

But with five million dollars...

you ought to be able to afford an apartment with a window.

Take care of yourself, Sylvia.

[tense music]

Did you see this?

Sacramento wants us to keep track

of the approximate time spent on each case we cover.

Did you ever go through your old high school yearbook?

-Good Lord, no, never. -I did.

Did it awaken old memories, Mack?

-I recognized one person. -[Jill] One person?

Out of your whole high school yearbook,

you only recognized one person?

Ah, I didn't say my yearbook.

I'm talking about your high school yearbook.

Franklin High School, class of '75,

where you were known as Dorothy Simpkins.

Dorothy Simpkins?

My name was Dorothy Simpkins.

Dorothy Jill Simpkins.

Until a short, bad marriage changed it.

Oh.

So, that woman who stopped you in the street was right.

And the doctor in Westfall did recognize you.

Did you have a past, Mack?

I mean, did you have a life before Karen?

Sure.

Well, I had one too.

Only I don't feel like discussing it.

Especially with you.

Especially since it has nothing to do with my job here.

Really, the fact that you're investigating Westfall

on the sly has nothing to do

with the fact that you're from Westfall.

Do you expect me to buy that?

I don't expect you to do anything.

Except let me get on with my job.

[door closes]

[sighs] I've been moping around

trying to figure out what to do with my life.

And the answer is very simple.

-Good. -I need to get away.

I need to get away from this show,

which has always been Joshua's and you know it.

And I need to get away from Knots Landing.

What?

[sighs] I'm going stale here, Ben.

-You know it and I know it. -I...

I- I don't know any such thing, um...

If there's a problem, we can fix it.

I mean, we can do that.

You sound like Valene.

Why, did you talk to Val about this?

Well, not really. I, uh... I ran into her at the hospital.

And she's just always so sweet.

She offered to help me with my problems.

So, you saw Val at the hospital?

Yeah, but don't you see? They're fixed.

I'm going away. That's it.

-Do me a favor, um... -What?

Wait until I've had a chance

to look at some of the recent videotapes.

I mean, really look at them.

And-- and then we can have this discussion, okay? Please?

Okay. But I don't think, I'm going to change my mind.

[man on TV] No action will be taken...

[dramatic music]

He knew I wouldn't be here.

Well, of course he did, but it doesn't matter.

What matters is five million dollars.

Peter, that's wonderful.

No, ma. That's a hot potato. It's going to burn your hand.

What? Well, we'd be crazy if we turned down this offer.

We'd be crazy if we took it.

Don't you understand what he's doing?

No, no. What I don't understand is you.

Let me explain.

Look, that's more money than I've ever dreamed of.

Ma, you're missing the point.

[Sylvia] Don't get greedy, Peter.

If you hold out for too much,

we may end up with nothing at all.

[Peter] Listen to me.

We hold out for what makes us legitimate.

The five million dollars he's offering us is bait .

Very attractive bait, but bait, nonetheless.

He's hoping we'll bite and swallow it...

and relinquish all claims to the rest of the fortune.

Who needs more than five million dollars?

[tense music]

I need more.

And we can get it.

-Don't blow it. -I won't blow it. Trust me?

I get very nervous when I hear that.

[Peter] Let's eat.

I had my heart set on Chinese food tonight.

We'll do Chinese tomorrow night.

I want to cook Michael his favorite meal.

He's really worried about going to court tomorrow.

Well, sooner or later, he'll tell what he knows.

I showed Jill the yearbook picture today.

-Uh-huh. -She didn't like it.

She didn't wanna talk about it, but I got her to admit

that she's Dottie Jill Simpkins.

Local Westfall girl makes good.

When did she become Jill Bennett?

She got married at an early age. It didn't work out.

[Karen] Uh-huh.

But that's it.

Maybe that's all there is to it.

You're going to ruin your appetite.

Oh, Eric, just in time to help Mack cook dinner. Here, chop.

-I'm not hungry. -You're not?

-You're not hungry? -Are you all right?

I think I'm catching that bug

that's going around work, you know?

-Really? -What bug?

Several people from Lotus Point are out sick.

I think it's the flu or something.

If you guys don't mind, I think I'm gonna go upstairs.

-Go to sleep. -[Karen] Yeah, all right.

You know what's wrong with you? Your mother works you too hard.

And you're going to ruin your appetite.

-Hi. -Hey.

Oh, don't get up.

[sighs]

-You look exhausted. -Yeah.

How was your day?

How was Gary?

-What? -How was Gary?

You went to visit him in the hospital today, didn't you?

Yes, I did.

-It's okay, you know. -[Valene] No, it's not.

Now, Ben, I wish there was something

I could do to make you understand--

-I understand. -Why?

No, why I had to go there.

I know why. And I understand.

It's hard on both of us.

All of this is hard.

Do you know? I don't think I know right from wrong anymore.

Is it right for me to be so angry about this trust fund?

I don't know. It's perfectly normal for you to--

[Ben] I didn't ask you if it was normal.

I asked you if it was right.

Is it right for my normal anger to deprive our kids

of the kind of security it would take me

ten lifetimes to be able to give them?

Is it right for me to expect you not to care

about the suicide course

that your ex-husband has set for himself?

Is it right for me to resent you for going to visit him?

Hell, you can take him away from that course.

You can save his life.

What is my resentment compared with that?

-Don't go upstairs. -You know...

You're doing what's right for you.

[Ben] And I respect you for that.

And if I also resent you for it...

then I guess it's my problem, isn't it?

[trash cans clanging]

[grunts]

-[sighs] Hi, Laura. -Hi, Valene.

Going off to work?

Yeah, Lotus Point is calling my name.

-See you later. -Okay, you have a good day.

Bye-bye.

-[Valene gasps] -[trash clattering]

-[trash clattering] -[grunts]

Come on I'll help you with this.

No, that's okay. I got it.

Don't! Don't, Laura, you get your clothes dirty.

Oh, don't be silly. It's okay.

No, I've got it. I've got it. I can just... I...

[sobs]

-Honey, honey. -[sighs]

There's no use crying over spilled trash.

[sobbing]

-No. That's milk, silly. -Right.

I thought it sounds familiar.

Oh, what a mess.

[trash rustling]

Well, I've, uh... I've got some news that'll cheer you up.

My divorce is final.

It's not exactly the reaction I expected.

[sobbing]

[mellow music]

Hey. What is it?

[sniffling] Why can't it work?

-What? -[Valene sniffling]

Why can't it all be okay?

I thought that I could make it work.

What? What are you talking about?

[sobbing]

Laura... why doesn't anything ever work out like you plan it?

[sobbing]

[sobbing]

[static on TV]

[mellow music]

Show's over, man.

I knew that.

-Pull up a chair. -I need a favor.

-You got it. -It's the Westfall file.

I've been through it a couple of times.

I still haven't found anything.

Uh, maybe there's nothing there to find.

Nah, there has to be.

Can we go over, look something? Is there anything else?

What, like outtakes, stuff like that?

Yeah, that'd be good.

But I wouldn't want you to compromise

your professional integrity or anything like that.

No, no, no, no. I'll get right on it.

Okay. All right.

What's the problem, Ben?

[Mack sighs]

Ben, what's the problem?

Uh, life in general.

Oh, okay.

Does it ever bother you that Karen was married before to Sid?

[chuckles] What? Where does that come from?

Does it?

No.

And you love those kids like they were your own, don't you?

What the hell? Oh.

Gary.

See, why is it

that I just can't accept his presence

and go on living my life, our life,

uh, Val's and mine?

-Good question. -I'll tell you why.

Because every time I turn around, he is there.

He won't leave us alone.

Val, the kids, we have a quiet week,

and then he goes out and rolls the macho mobile

for a little tea and sympathy from his ever-friendly ex-wife.

Well, I don't think Gary's trying to bust up your marriage.

Maybe not intentionally.

Ben.

[Ben] He's doing a damn good impression.

And, you know, what really burns me up

is the fact that he always comes out smelling like a rose.

[indistinct chatter]

Sorry I'm late. I got hung up in traffic.

I see you've ordered already.

[grunts]

I was surprised to hear from you so soon.

Thought that you and Peter would need some more time,

but then five million dollars is all--

[Peter] Is a very generous proposition.

-Peter. -I thought I'd join you.

I hope you don't mind.

Mind? This is a family gathering.

Well, we've thought about your offer, Mr. Sumner--

And as I said, it's a very generous proposition.

[Gregory] Well, I feel it's important to be fair.

-Peter-- -But it's not enough.

Really?

I guess you weren't very persuasive, were you?

Mother explained everything you told her.

We read through the contract.

And you're in 100% agreement, are you?

-Well-- -[Peter] We will be.

I know you understand.

That's why you went to ma in the first place.

Five million dollars is a lot of money to her.

Well, it's not exactly pocket change to me, kid.

Yes. Well...

We're not looking for a payoff, Mr. Sumner.

We're looking for what's rightfully ours.

Rightfully so.

[snaps fingers]

[tense music]

[knocking on door]

All set.

Hi.

[sighs]

I thought it was the nurse.

[sighs]

-You ready? -[Garrison] Ready for what?

Well, I called here this morning

and they said you were going to be released.

So, I came to pick you up, take you home.

I'm not going home with you.

-Where are you going? -I don't know.

Well, I think you should go home, Gary.

The doctor said that you have some recuperating to do still.

Abby, no.

[sighs]

Look, Olivia's coming over tonight.

It's our night to have dinner together.

And I thought it would be nice if the three of us

could sit down and have a nice dinner.

-Abby, stop using Olivia. -[Abigail] Gary--

-Here we are, Mr. Ewing. Hop in. -I can walk.

Uh, not till you get to the front door, you can't.

After that, you're on your own.

Mrs. Ewing, would you mind carrying the suitcase?

[Jill] I've decided to trust you, Mack.

My family owned most of Empire Valley,

dating back to the 1800s when nobody wanted it.

Well, that's a lot of land.

They must have been very wealthy.

You don't know much about ranching.

[scoffs]

You know, I may not know much about ranching,

but you sure don't strike me as a country girl.

That's something else we don't know much about.

Paul Galveston decided that he wanted our land.

Why?

[Jill] To build whatever it was he built there.

He was a powerful man.

He swindled my father out of everything.

One day, my father woke up,

and we didn't even own our house.

It destroyed him.

It ate away at him, until finally...

he shot himself.

-How old were you? -Ten.

I vowed that, one day, I'd get our land back

and I'd grind Paul Galveston's nose in the process.

[Mack] So... that's what this is all about, huh?

-Revenge? -[Jill] Only partly.

You see, Mack, everybody's dead now.

My parents, Galveston.

And Empire Valley is just land.

Somewhere along the line,

I went from revenge to a social conscience.

That's some jump.

Galveston destroyed my family.

And while he was at it, an entire town, Westfall.

Now, I can't prove it yet,

but I know that he did it deliberately

and that he got away with it.

Why didn't you tell me about this sooner?

Because I wasn't sure about you.

You went after Galveston once and you quit.

I didn't quit. There was nothing else to find out.

Are you sure?

Maybe you just didn't look hard enough.

No, now, don't tell me how hard

I conduct my investigations, please.

Then stop investigating me!

And let me help you investigate

what I know Galveston did to Westfall.

[soft music]

Oh, I'm glad you're taking that.

-It always looks so cute on you. -Cute?

I never really liked it much.

[knocking on door]

Dinner will be ready in five minutes.

Oh, it smells like roast chicken.

Well, it is. I made it specially for you.

Thanks, Maria.

It's nice to have you back, Olivia.

[footstep receding]

[sighs]

Has, um...

Has Michael talked to you about this mess that he's in?

Look, it's no big deal.

Possession of any drug

is most certainly a big deal, Olivia.

Everybody's making a federal case

out of a couple of joints. It's nothing.

It's nothing? What do you mean it's nothing?

[groans] You can't go to jail for two joints.

I mean, he would have to be holding a lid

or a couple of ounces.

Really?

Any judge would see that, by Michael's grades,

that he wasn't doing a number.

You know an awful lot about this, don't you?

Well, all the kids talk that way.

[suspenseful music]

Mom, what are you doing?

That's my purse. You have no right.

[Abigail] So, sue me.

[breathes deeply]

[sighs]

It's not mine. I'm holding it for a friend.

It?

[plastic bag crinkling]

I meant them.

Get your coat on, Olivia.

We're going to go for a little ride.

Let's go.

-Are you gonna tell them? -No. You're gonna tell them.

[Olivia] What are you getting so crazy about? It's nothing.

[Abigail] Michael is my brother's son.

And I'm not going to have him go to jail for something you did.

[Olivia] Oh, since when did you care so much

about uncle Sid's family?

I loved my brother, and you know that.

And whether you believe it or not, I love you too.

That's why you're going to tell the truth.

Well, maybe I should tell them the whole truth,

including your part of the kidnapping of Val's babies.

You tell them whatever you want to, Olivia.

Just be sure that they know

it was your marijuana in Michael's car.

Here we are.

I'll tell them. I swear, I will tell them everything.

-[doorbell rings] -[sighs]

Oh, you're back early.

Go ahead, Olivia. Tell them.

Tell them!

[dramatic music]

-Go on, Olivia. Tell them. -Take it easy.

Tell us what.

[sighs]

The joints in Michael's car were mine.

Mack, I'm sorry. I didn't know it would go this far.

-I know that I-- -Tell Michael that.

He's the one you hurt.

[sighs]

I know that I should've come forward sooner.

-You're damn right. -Michael.

Well, she should have.

I'm not going to go to jail or anything.

It was just two joints.

I'm going to talk to the prosecutor.

I don't think you have to worry about going to jail.

But you're going to have to accept responsibility

for the joints.

That's bad enough.

Right?

I feel so ashamed.

It'll be all right.

[mellow music]

-Where are you going? -I don't know. Out.

I need to think.

We can't continue like this. I can't.

-You're married. -What difference does it make?

It makes a difference to me.

Gary, I know you care for me. And that means a lot.

Everything works with us.

The being together, the talk,

the excitement, the lovemaking.

But you're a married man, and I just can't get past that.

[sighs]

Mack, I've been thinking about our life together...

and how good it is.

I know how difficult it's been lately because...

Never mind.

You're sleeping?

Mm.

[Karen chuckles]

You're so good with the kids.

You know...

when I think how important having a father is to a child...

I realize... how lucky my kids are to have you.

Our kids.

[sighs]

And then I realize how lucky I am to have you too.

Mack.

[mellow music]

In some ways, becoming a father

is the easiest thing I've ever done.

I thought it'd be hard, but it wasn't.

Feeling...

like their father, believing they were mine.

I mean, no problem. They're mine. That's it.

Do you know when I first knew...

I mean, knew...

that they were in my blood?

When Bobby first called you "Da-da."

[Ben] No.

The first time I ever felt like ringing their little necks.

You and I were in bed and feeling a little sexy,

and they decided to, uh, test their lung power.

So, we got up and fed them and put them back down,

and went back to bed,

and we're just getting serious again.

[chuckles]

They knew what we were up to.

You walked Bets and I walked Bob...

-Mm-hm. -...till they quieted down.

Then we put them down and we tried again.

And they cried again.

-[Ben] All night long. -[chuckles]

And I thought I'm going to ring their little necks.

And it dawned on me...

that if I felt secure enough to feel that way...

then I was their father. Period. End of discussion.

I felt that way and I felt the other way,

you know, like, um...

Like when you're driving along

and you see a big 18-wheeler bearing down

and you think to yourself...

"I would throw myself in front of that to save my kids."

And you know, you mean it.

[melancholy music]

Gary Ewing is that 18-wheeler.

I hate feeling that way...

[sighs] But I do.

I know you do.

You're going to have to help me with this one.

Don't worry. I will.

Yeah.

[horn honking]

[Karen] Come on, Michael.

We have to meet Mack in juvenile court in 20 minutes.

-Where's Michael? -Still in the bathroom.

Giving his hair an extra brush for the judge.

[Michael] Okay, okay.

-I'm ready. -Where are you going?

Well, I thought I'd go with you.

A little support for baby brother.

-[scoffs] No, thanks. -You're still sick.

-But-- -No buts.

You in the car.

[sighs]

-Now, where are you going? -To work.

You need more rest.

Why don't you let the doctor decide when you go back to work?

Oh, Mom, please, I'm fine.

I-- I'll be better off doing something.

Just make sure you come home with him, all right? [chuckles]

See you.

Mom, if it's all the same to you,

I'd just as soon not get the judge mad by being late.

[sighs] Kids.

[indistinct chatter on TV]

I looked at your tape.

You're wrong.

Your singing is better than ever.

And I think that all the pain and unhappiness

that you've been through recently

has given a deeper color to your performance.

-Ben, I appreciate it-- -No, let me go on.

It's your voice and it's your career,

and you can and will do what you want with it.

I think you're making an emotional decision,

not a professional one. I think that you're letting

what happened to you recently cloud your judgment.

-Can you blame me? -No. Not at all.

I wouldn't be a friend if I didn't say this.

You're good, I mean, you're good,

and you're getting better, and, uh...

and I hate to see you throw it all away, honey.

Oh, I'm not going to do that, Ben.

That's not going to happen.

I just... I just need some time away.

I need some time to think about...

...about what I want to do, you know?

Oh, don't give me that face. [laughing]

I'm not going away forever. I'm going to come back.

It sure going to be dull around here without you.

-I'm going to miss you. -I'm going to miss you too.

[sighs] Give me a hug.

[romantic music]

Well, you go on and get out of here, you've got stuff to do.

I'm going to do that. [chuckles]

See you later.

Look, man, if you came here to give me a lecture,

take a number. I've got them lined up around the block.

I would have been here earlier, but I just got out of court.

-[Garrison] Yeah? Big case? -Yeah, Olivia.

Olivia? What happened?

Michael almost went to trial today

because the cops found a couple of joints in his car.

But Olivia stood up and admitted that they were hers.

Olivia? I don't believe it.

You'd better believe it. Abby was with her in court.

But I don't think that was enough for Olivia,

because she kept looking around the courtroom.

And I'll bet she was looking for you, Gary.

[sighs] I didn't know.

[Mack] You should have.

Nobody told me, if I'd known I'd been there.

You better make a decision, pal.

You're either going to be in Olivia's life.

-Or you're going to be out. -Nobody told me.

Not Abby, not Karen, and not you.

Well, if you spent a little more time with Olivia,

instead of fooling around with this stuff.

-Nobody would've to-- -Okay, fine.

But since I wasn't around, don't you think that maybe,

just maybe, somebody could have given me a call!

I tried. But I couldn't find you.

You didn't have any trouble today, did you?

Okay. Next time, I'll have it put in the papers.

So, you won't have any trouble keeping track

of the people's lives you messed up.

God!

Check out the front page tomorrow.

You can read all about what you're doing

to Ben and Val's marriage.

Ben and Val... What the hell are you talking about?

That trust fund you dumped in their laps?

That's just big enough to break up their marriage.

That trust fund was a gift for the twins' future

and had nothing to do with their marriage.

[Mack] When are you going to realize that anything

that you do has an effect on someone's life?

I can't go through life worrying about whether every move I make

is going to bother somebody.

I'm not talking about bother.

I'm talking about the important moves,

the ones that destroy people's lives.

Put it together, Gary.

[dramatic music]

Oh, hi.

Well, that didn't take long.

What happened after you got to the judge's chambers?

Well, the judge told Olivia that, uh,

there wouldn't be an arrest record

if she agreed to join a support group.

-I was glad too. -Ah, good.

-I learned my lesson. -Well, it's all over now.

I'm really sorry for all the trouble I've caused, Aunt Karen.

Thanks, mom.

Hey.

She'll be all right.

She's got a good head on her shoulders.

Well, at least she used to before she moved in with you.

[door closes]

[sighs]

[suspenseful music]

-[water splashing] -[paper bag crinkling]

[window frame slides]

[lighter clicking]

[inhaling]

[suspenseful music continues]

What do you want, Peter?

Abby thinks I have the necessary charms

to lure you away from Gary.

We just have to be seen more often in public together.

That's all. So, she knows I'm trying.

-Fine. -Hold on. What's wrong?

Nothing. I have to get back to work.

Jill.

[chuckles] You're incorrigible, you know that?

Nothing ever changes with you.

Look at how much you've accomplished.

You've got looks, brains,

position, poise, ambition.

And you're still the incurable romantic,

in love with love.

Yesterday, Mack MacKenzie. Today, Gary Ewing.

If we have to be seen in public, Peter, we'll be seen in public.

-I don't need a lecture. -Yet, evidently, you do.

What we're doing is important.

And delicate.

Clear-headedness is paramount.

Jill, you don't have to fall in love

with everyone you sleep with.

Just gets messy, don't you think?

[soft music]

And on top of everything else, before I went home...

Uh...

-Want some? -No.

-Come on. -Yes, yes. No, yeah.

[chuckles]

Laura told me Charlie Lee went home sick.

Who's Charlie Lee?

Mm. The groundskeeper. You know him.

He's been with us forever. Short, stocky, right?

-What's wrong with him? -I don't know.

It sounds a lot like what Eric has.

Well, that's... that makes the sixth person, doesn't it?

What the hell's going on over there?

Did he have Legionnaires' disease?

Don't even say it.

A rumor like that could bankrupt us in a month.

I love this.

-You do, huh? -Yeah, I do.

I've got the rest of the afternoon off.

And you, it's a shame you have to go back to work.

What are you doing?

Oh, well, I'll get the check while you're in there.

[Karen clears throat]

[romantic music]

Mrs. MacKenzie asked me to give you this.

Oh, thank you.

[romantic music continues]

[paper rustling]

[key clicking]

[romantic music]

Someone handed me a note downstairs.

It says...

"Dear Mack, get your buns up to room 503.

Love, Karen."

I know how sweet talk turns you on.

I thought we could use, uh, some time alone.

Good thinking.

Mack...

I'm not sure this is going to work.

Well... we won't know until we try.

[romantic music continues]

-No guarantees. -None needed.

[crickets chirping]

[sighs]

[door closes]

[playing with piano]

Well... look who decided to drop by.

Could we drop the sarcasm? We've got to talk, Abby.

Oh, you're damn right we have to talk, Gary.

Where were you last night? I needed you.

More importantly, Olivia needed you.

I know. Mack told me. I feel awful.

[Abigail] You feel awful?

Well, isn't that too bad? You feel awful.

How do you think Olivia feels?

One of the reasons she's having this drug problem of hers

is because you don't pay any attention to her.

-Abby, look-- -[Abigail] No, you look.

My children think of you as their father.

You're a big part of their lives.

And all of a sudden, you're gone.

You're off racing cars and running around with women.

You're really on a roll this time, aren't you, Gary?

First of all, you fail the business.

A business that we started together.

Then you fail Olivia.

Then you fail me and our marriage.

You just keep going on and on and on,

making things worse for everybody all the time.

[dramatic music]

When you're right, you're right. [sighs]

But I guarantee you, things are gonna be better for everybody.

I'm divorcing you, Abby.

[intense music]

[theme music]
