[Ben] Cathy, wait.

Mrs. Rush, we'd like to ask you a few questions.

Mrs. Rush, what do you think about the arrest

of Ken Forest for the m*rder of your husband?

[Gary] Babies are mine, ours.

You can't expect me to just walk away from that.

-What are you doing? -My job.

You called Karen.

Have you been in town long?

No, not this trip.

Does this have anything to do with Mack?

And what is this sudden, consuming interest

he has in the babies?

I don't know, Ben.

This is going to stop.

And I am going to put an end to it.

[theme music playing]

[suspenseful music playing]

[man] Sergeant tells me you have information

which you believe pertains to the death of Joshua Rush.

Would you like to make a statement?

Yes, I...

Fine. Then I'll have the stenographer sit right up.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Ben] Look, all I'm saying is that

if Gary hadn't kept the babies up

half the night playing with them,

we wouldn't have had to be up the other half of the night

trying to get them to bed.

Well, I'm sure he didn't mean any harm by it,

birthday boy.

-He probably just wanted to... -What?

You can't blame Gary for the babies

having a restless night.

Some children are just like that.

Come on, Mama. You know that Bobby's teething.

Well, Val, you slept through the night

almost from the day you were born.

But Joshua, Lord, he never wanted to sleep.

Even as a baby.

He had so much energy.

Mama, do you want me to serve you some breakfast or something?

No need. Look, I haven't touched mine

and I'm late for work already.

-What? -Take mine.

-Oh, no, I can't do that. -Please.

Why don't I wrap it up for you? You can take it with you.

I'll be all right. Thanks. Bye.

-See you later. Okay. -I love this.

[laughs]

Actually, Mama, I have to be going too.

I have some errands to run.

Um, they're all fed and all they're gonna need

is a little apple juice at around 10 or so.

Okay. Where are you going?

Uh, just, you know, some birthday surprise and stuff.

Oh.

-Bye. -Bye-bye.

[soft music playing]

Hi. Can I help you with the...

Thanks. I, uh, I can carry my own books to school.

I know I have a tendency to...

Peter, why don't you, uh, get to the point?

I'm worried about Mr. Sumner.

Losing Empire Valley has been very difficult for him.

Well, he'll get over it.

I'm sure he will eventually.

So why are you telling me this?

Mr. Sumner is not in very good shape right now.

I think he needs you.

I just thought you'd want to know that.

[sighs]

And this is the certificate of appreciation

they gave him after he visited that children's school.

Joshua was always donating his time

to one good cause or another.

People forget how generous he was.

-You have a lot to be proud of. -I know.

Well, I've got to get to work.

Oh, I'm sorry. Val's not back yet.

All she told me was she had some errands to run.

-Oh, it's not important. -[doorbell rings]

I'll see her at the party tonight.

Oh, I'll get it.

-Yes? -Lilimae Clements, please.

I'm Lilimae Clements.

Ms. Clements, my name is Detective McHugh.

I'd like to introduce my partner, Detective Fiore.

I'd like to ask you a few questions

about your son's death.

[gloomy music playing]

Karen, would you stay with me a while?

Come in, please.

Your full name, please.

Linda Jane Martin.

Address?

Is this necessary?

Ms. Martin, you did come here to tell us the truth, didn't you?

Of course.

And just answer the questions for the record, please.

Address?

I'm sorry this may be painful for you, Mrs. Clements.

Please understand that we have to ask a few questions.

What are your questions?

Ms. Clements, did you notice anyone leaving the scene

of your son's death or anyone nearby?

My son was dead.

I would not have noticed even if anyone

had been there, Detective.

I understand.

So you saw no one else there at the scene of the...

Well, you saw no one else there?

Well, should I have?

Yes. Yes.

Ken was there. He told me he was there when Joshua died.

What did he say exactly?

[sighs]

-I think he said that... [sighs] -You think?

He said, "I was there when he died.

He got what he deserved."

And you consider that an admission of guilt?

You decide if it's an admission of guilt.

I'm simply telling you that I heard Ken threaten Joshua.

Why would anyone threaten Joshua?

My son was a man of peace, a man of principle.

Linda Martin agrees that your son was a man of principle,

but she also claims that Joshua's life

was being threatened.

Who is Linda Martin?

A young woman who says she was living with your son.

Well, she's lying.

[sighs]

Why would I lie about a thing like that?

I don't know.

Maybe because my son was a celebrity.

Joshua told me his marriage was over.

Any new marriage can expect difficulties now and then.

Cathy and Joshua's marriage

was no different in that regard,

except perhaps that they were more mature

than most young people their age.

But Ken, Ken is kind of immature in some ways.

I have never heard of Ken Forest.

He was really shook up when I stopped seeing him.

Ken, he's got a bad temper. He was jealous of Joshua.

This is silly. I mean, silly and upsetting.

Someone comes in off the street

with a fantastic story like that

and you believe it?

Do you believe me?

[tense music playing]

I'm sorry, Ms. Clements, but we have an obligation

to investigate any clue that might result in the, uh,

reclassifying of your son's death as a, as a homicide.

And we'd appreciate all your cooperation.

I do not wish to cooperate with anyone who will drag

my son's good name through the mud.

My son is dead now.

Can't you leave him alone?

Decent people let the dead rest in peace.

[gloomy music playing]

That roan right there, that's the one I gave Olivia.

Right out there with the blaze face?

Yep.

-Beautiful. -Yep.

It's great.

-They're all beautiful. -Yeah, they are.

No, I didn't.

Gary.

I know what you're going to say.

-No, you don't. -Yes, I do.

-[chuckles] No, you don't. -Yes, I do.

We've known each other most of our adult lives.

Being apart doesn't mean I can't still read you like a book.

Okay, then what?

Don't ask me to stay away, please.

I know all those babies are mine, ours.

You can't expect me to just walk away from that.

[mellow music continues]

You don't have to say anything.

I don't even expect you to admit it.

But I know.

And that's all that matters.

Gary, now that Ben and I are married.

Yeah.

And we have a home of our own.

Gary, you can't just drop over to see us anytime you want.

You can't come by at midnight to see the babies.

We have a family of our own.

Ben and I...

and the children are a family, Gary.

And you're gonna have to respect that.

Okay?

[mellow music ends]

[suspenseful music playing]

Ms. Martin, they're ready for you to sign your statement.

[soft music playing]

Why does Gary Ewing want that land?

What the hell does he think he's gonna do with it?

You told the whole world that at least

part of Empire Valley is on unstable land.

I hardly think people are gonna start lining up

-to buy the rest of it. -I lined up, didn't I?

I offered the guy a small fortune for that ground.

He turned around, he threw the offer right back at my face.

He's got plans for that place,

and I intend to find out what they are.

[knocking on door]

Am I interrupting anything important?

Actually, I was just leaving.

-Mrs. Avery? -Peter.

[gloomy music playing]

Now can I go?

Would you like police protection, Ms. Martin?

Why?

From what you've given me,

I have enough to bring Forest in for questioning.

But you may not be safe until he's in custody.

And when will that be?

I can't answer that. First, we have to find him.

You shouldn't be apologizing. I should be thanking you.

-You did me a favor. -I did?

Yeah. See, the crew was due for a break,

and you saved me an overtime penalty.

-Oh, Ben. -I know it's hard.

Yeah, it is.

It'll get better.

Ben, I don't know if I can go on.

Sure you can.

Honey, I know how much this hurts right now,

but every day, it's gonna hurt a little bit less.

I promise.

-I do. -Oh.

I'll send this stuff to the cleaners.

Maybe we should put a tail on Gary

to find out what he's up to.

Isn't that a bit excessive?

No, locking him up would be excessive.

Putting a tail on him is merely being prudent.

Yes, but redundant.

After all, Mrs. Ewing--

Would like to speak to Mr. Sumner in private.

-Of course. -How are you?

Very well. Thank you.

Greg, I am really, really getting tired

of being summoned here like this.

This is not the most congenial place to hold--

If you are stonewalling,

I will tell the world that you have knowledge

of the baby's kidnappings

and the paternity. I will tell--

I don't know what Gary's up to.

I simply don't know.

Who's he talking to?

-Investor types, lawyers? -No one.

What's he doing with his time?

-I don't know. -Find out.

He's not talking to me.

Gary blew up my building,

and he will not sell me the land.

I'm going to damn well find out what he's after.

So when are we going to work out again?

I don't know.

Come on, man. You didn't even look.

What's your problem? You got a face on you down till here.

I just feel so old, you know?

Like I got nothing to look forward to.

Come on. Things aren't that bad.

They're not?

Hey, look.

Are we talking about life in general, or are we dealing

with specifics here, like blowing up Empire Valley?

You blew up your little building.

You own the property, so you rebuild.

Come on, my friend. You can't look back.

[Greg] You got to pick up the beat. Look ahead.

He has a plan, Abby.

He blew up a multimillion dollar complex.

Not even Gary is crazy enough

to blow away millions without a plan.

I don't know how to look ahead.

Look, I know a lot of guys

who've got a master plan, you know?

They sit down and they say,

"Okay, I'm going to go to law school,

I'm going to get married, I'm going to have two kids,

I'm going to do civic work,

and then I'm going to retire at 65,"

but I don't do that.

I walk around and I say,

"Okay, what's next? Surprise me." Which is okay,

but look where it's gotten me.

Thank God, my car won't start.

Oh, you're kidding. Where's it parked?

-In the garage. -Yeah?

The lights work? The horn work?

-Nothing. -Nothing.

All right, I'll take care of it.

[chuckles]

What's so funny?

Well, the idea of you trying to fix the car,

you can't even work a toaster. [laughs]

-I can work a toaster. -[laughs]

You-you-you go on. You've got an appointment.

-I'll-I'll look after her. -Oh, I can call a mechanic.

No, no, it's no problem.

Jill, this is Gary Ewing.

Gary Ewing. Jill Bennett.

-Hi, nice to meet you. -Nice to meet you.

Well, thanks for the offer.

-Where's the garage? -It's just this way.

Let's go look at it.

Well, that takes care of that, huh?
