06x26 - Four, No Trump

Post by bunniefuu »

You're going to be misunderstood.

Maybe even hated by everyone.

You're going to have to lie

to the people who are closest to you.

Those babies are alive.

Help get them back to their mother.

It's the only choice you have.

I've been thinking about what you said

before the wedding.

And?

-I'm in. -Great. I'll tell the boys.

[Dr. Ackerman] Karen MacKenzie found me yesterday.

You'd better put a stop to it.

If I go down, you go down with me.

[theme music]

[music continues]

[soft music]

Hello? Hello?

-Dr. Ackerman. -Yes?

My name is Karen MacKenzie.

I'm a friend of Valene Ewing's.

Um, I'd like to talk to you about her delivery.

It's really very important. Is there some place we could go?

I'm sorry. You'd... You better refresh my memory.

You delivered twins for her last November.

She was told they were stillborn.

-Oh, twins, of course. -Yes.

Well, that was very sad. How is she?

She's having trouble with her recovery.

I'm trying to help her.

Dr. Ackerman, when you took over the case for Dr. Kellin,

were you aware that--

I can't discuss cases with friends of my patients.

This is privileged medical information.

Mrs. Ewing is convinced that those babies

were born alive, that she heard them crying.

Tell Mrs. Ewing to call me and I'll set up an appointment.

Ackerman!

Mrs. MacKenzie, I'm trying to be patient with you.

Don't patronize me.

I'm not patronizing you, madam. I'm trying to hold my temper.

I'm also trying to ignore

the implications of your questions.

-What implications? -The obvious implications.

If the babies weren't stillborn, if I lied about them,

then what happened?

You tell me.

I have told you.

You haven't told me where the babies are.

I see. You think they're alive.

It's possible.

I'm a doctor, Mrs. MacKenzie, an obstetrician.

I've spent my life caring for expectant mothers

and delivering their babies.

It's never become routine for me.

Every time I preside over a birth,

I feel privileged to be a participant in a miracle.

You seem to be suggesting

that I've profaned the sacredness of my work.

I resent that deeply,

and I refuse to help you indulge your theories,

whatever they may be.

Very eloquent.

Good day.

Those babies are alive.

Help get them back to their mother.

It's the only choice you have.

[soft music]

-What you thinking about? -Nothing.

Nothing?

The wedding? The dress.

Dre... The dress?

[both chuckle]

-Well, it's something, isn't it? -Almost nothing.

I was thinking about what I've inherited.

I thought maybe you were thinking

about what Greg had to say to you, today.

What's he up to, anyway?

Actually, I was thinking about Empire Valley

and the fact that we now control the whole show.

-It's nice, isn't it? -Uh-huh.

What time were the kids due back from the McConnells?

Well, see, I don't know.

[knock on door]

Billy was just out riding. He saw an accident up the road.

-Looks like the McConnell car. -[Abby] Oh, an accident?

Okay. Come on.

He's not sure it was them.

[car engine revving]

[Abby] Oh, God, please don't let anybody be hurt.

Honey, calm down.

We don't even know if it's their car.

What if they are hurt? What if they're...

Alright. Take it easy. They're probably fine.

[sighs]

God, I don't think I could stand it

if anything happened to them.

I really don't think I... I could take it.

[Gary] There it is.

[Abby] Oh, please, God, don't let anybody be hurt.

Oh, God! Oh, Gary.

[music continues]

[firefighter grunts]

[man] Let me have that.

[man] Move it along the side. Yeah, there you go.

There they are.

-[Olivia] Mom! -Oh! Oh, my God!

[Abby sobs]

[Brian] Oh, mom.

-Are you alright? -We're fine but the car's not.

Oh, who cares about the car!

[Brian] Oh, man, it was incredible.

This car was coming right at us.

Mr. McConnell had to pull way over to the side.

Another second we could have been k*lled.

Oh, Brian!

-[Brian] Mom... -[sniffles] It's alright.

He's just a little excited.

-What happened? -Oh, the guy was drunk.

He blacked out at the wheel

and crossed into the oncoming lane.

Lucky no one was going too fast.

When do they learn that you can't drink and drive?

-I don't believe it. -It's alright. It's okay now.

[sighs] Let's go home.

[Brian sighs]

[siren wails]

Come on.

[waves crashing]

-Are you superstitious? -What do you mean?

Well, you did catch the wedding bouquet.

[chuckles]

Come on, now, don't start.

Well, no, no, I'm not starting anything.

I just, you know, because you, obviously, wanted to catch it.

Wanted to catch it?

-What did you say? -What do you mean?

There was nobody standing within 10 feet of you.

Well, I was shocked to catch it.

-I was talking to mama... -And I caught the bouquet.

No, listen, we just know what happened.

Seriously, yeah.

You know, I know it could be kind of hard,

you know, for you to get a guy or whatever.

And so I thought if you were superstitious,

that I'd do one to help you out.

You would?

Yeah, yeah, I thought I'd do that.

That's real good of you.

Yeah. [laughs] So, I'm glad you're here.

What?

I'm glad you're here.

Then show me.

-What? -Show me how glad you are.

-You mean like... -Like show me.

[Ben] Oh, um, ugh... Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.

[Valene] Okay, you want me to stop, huh?

-[Valene] You want me to stop? -[Ben] No.

[Valene] Are you sure? Huh? Are you?

Be gentle.

[Valene] I'm going to be gentle.

You just got to tell me. Come on.

[crickets chirping]

[Karen] You should have seen him,

you should have heard him,

giving me this speech about childbirth,

what a miracle it was,

how privileged he was to be a part of it.

So eloquent, so articulate.

A doctor who loves his work

and takes his responsibility seriously.

Sounds like you have him cold, Karen.

Don't be so sarcastic. It was all so rehearsed.

There wasn't an ounce of sincerity.

I looked into his eyes, Mack, and I knew he was lying.

And he knew I knew.

Karen, so far, all you have are your instincts.

So what's wrong with my instincts?

My instincts have always been perfectly reliable.

-Haven't they? -They're terrific?

-Well, okay, so? -So you can't take him to court.

Alright. Calm down.

Just let's relax and take it easy.

-How was the wedding? -Fun.

Good.

Cathy's dress was like, ha-ha, it was almost a dress.

-You liked it, huh? -Oh, yeah.

And how was Eric's girl? Cute?

-Whitney? -Yeah.

Better than cute.

Well, I'm sorry I didn't get to meet her.

[laughs] Guess who's coming to dinner?

-Really? -Yeah.

-When? -Tomorrow.

Oh, good.

[sighs]

Gotta keep after him, Mack.

Gotta hound him until he confesses.

-Don't. -Why?

It's against the law and he can stop you.

Anyway, you don't want to alert him

to any more than he knows already,

so you leave him alone

while we look for real, concrete evidence.

[soft music]

I'm glad you said we.

[waves crashing]

[gasps]

-What's going on? -I, uh...

I couldn't sleep and I was afraid that my...

tossing and turning was disturbing you,

so I-I just decided that I'd go on home.

That way at least one of us could get some sleep.

What time is it?

It's quarter after two.

-Are you okay? -Yeah, I'm fine. I just...

Sometimes I just get these periods of wakefulness,

you know, and I just...

Uh, I'm explaining all this very badly.

No, you're not. You're doing fine.

-Is there anything I can do? -No, I'm fine.

You just go on back to sleep and I'll, uh...

-Okay. I love you. -I love you, too.

-[Ben] Hey, one little thing. -What?

You gonna walk home?

Ugh...

[sighs]

Now, I really do feel terrible.

[sighs]

If you give me a minute, I will drive you home.

You know you're really very sweet.

Don't let it get around the home.

I don't want it to ruin my image as a hard-boiled reporter.

[soft music]

Honey, the kids are fine. Come to bed.

I will in a minute.

You've been in here every hour on the hour.

It's all over now.

You don't have to keep checking on them.

I just can't help thinking what could have happened.

But nothing happened. Stop torturing yourself.

They're both safe.

Come on, it's late. Let's go to bed.

I will in a minute. I promise.

Okay.

[music continues]

[dog barks]

[Greg] Shut up.

Be careful. This mare doesn't like men.

[horse neighs]

I have been thinking about what you said

before the wedding.

And?

I'm in.

Great. I'll tell the boys.

[horse neighs]

I can't remember which one Cathy liked, now.

But I like that one. What do you think?

I think, Lilimae, you should wait

and make sure it's something they really want.

That one fits the...

-Well, hello there. -But everybody's taste is...

-[Lilimae] Oh! -It's good to see you.

Don't tell me you're still shopping for the wedding.

Oh, no, now this is for their room.

Their room? Wait a minute.

You... you mean they're gonna be living in Val's house?

Well, why shouldn't they? I mean, the price is right.

Well, there seems to be a slight disagreement.

Why don't we settle it over lunch?

Oh, no, we can't have lunch. I have an appointment.

That's good. I'd like that. I'm hungry.

[Ruth] Oh, nonsense. There's always time for lunch.

I know just the place.

Come on, we'll have a quick bite and get to know each other.

Oh, I'd like that.

[birds chirping]

[door knocks]

Yeah.

-Got a minute? -Sure.

[phone rings]

[sighs]

[Karen] You alright?

What is it you wanted?

[sighs]

What do you think of Eric as assistant manager of operations?

Your Eric?

I know he's my son, but he's a hell of a manager.

He did a wonderful job at Knots Landing Motors,

and John Kent can teach him.

It's okay with me.

Excuse me, Abby,

but there's a phone call for you.

The gentleman won't give his name,

but he says it's urgent.

I really don't want to talk to anybody right now.

He won't take no for an answer.

Look, you don't have to decide right now.

Just think about it, okay?

I don't need to think about it. It's fine.

I'll take it, Cherie.

[sighs]

Hello.

[Ackerman] This is Ackerman.

Doctor, I've been trying to reach you.

You're not the only one.

Karen MacKenzie found me yesterday.

What?

I don't like the questions she asked.

[Abby] How much does she know?

I don't know, but she hasn't got anything concrete.

She's also been talking to the delivery room nurses.

This must stop, do you understand?

Ugh, I didn't have anything to do with it.

Nevertheless, you'd better put a stop to it.

-[Abby] How can I? -Find a way.

If I go down, you go down with me.

Look, I didn't have anything to do with this,

and you know it.

You can believe that if you like,

but I doubt if a jury would.

-Get to work, Mrs. Ewing. -Doctor, wait a minute.

[instrumental music]

[birds chirping]

[car horn honks]

[doorbell rings]

Oh...

-Hi. -Hi.

-Come on in. -You're not ready yet.

Oh, sorry. I, uh...

I got so involved in my writing, I just...

I totally forgot the time. I should have called you.

Oh, well, that's okay.

I didn't want to go to that stuffy old museum anyhow.

Listen, why don't we, uh, get a bucket of junk

and get in the car and go for a drive,

maybe have a picnic?

Would you, uh...

Would you be terribly mad at me

if I just stayed here and kept working?

I'm really on a roll.

I-I finally got an idea for the beginning of the book.

It hit me last night. You know, that's why I couldn't sleep.

I was just so excited about it. My... my heart started pounding.

I thought it might be something like that.

Yeah. Well, and I...

You know, I've just finished the first 12 pages,

and I really hate to stop.

Well, don't... No, I don't want to get in the way

of the creative process.

-You go ahead and... -You don't mind?

No, it's alright. I'll see you tonight.

Okay.

-Thank you. -Yeah.

-Ben? -Yeah.

-About 7:30? -Like, yeah, I guess.

-That's what Karen said. -Bye. Right.

[gloomy music]

So, that is what this is all about.

Let me get this straight.

Are you saying that this is a government-approved operation?

We're operating on behalf of our governments.

We do things that governments can't readily do.

-Legally? -Absolutely.

Technically, we're multinational.

Private enterprise, doing vital research and development.

Sounds fine to me.

But what if an animal comes at you?

-[Ruth] Oh, I take its picture. -What if it keeps coming?

Then I stay very quiet and try to keep cool.

Well, what if it still keeps coming?

Ha-ha, thank God. That's never happened.

Uh, I just can't begin to imagine it.

Oh, having to keep cool while a wild animal comes at me.

Can you, Laura?

Oh, I've had a lot of experience with wild animals, lately.

Don't quip, Laura. Nice girls don't quip.

Are you ready to order now?

Actually, I'm going to have to pass on lunch.

-I do have an appointment. -Oh, what a pity.

Now, you girls try to stay out of trouble, okay?

You're staying, aren't you, Lilimae?

I'll take you home later.

Oh, well, that's nice. Thank you.

Now we can order.

[dog barks]

And with grading finished on the western ridge,

we ought to be able to complete construction

over there in about six months.

-Too late. -Why too late?

Because it is. Aren't there any shortcuts?

Yeah, but I don't want to take any.

Six months is too long.

I want this thing to get off the ground, right now.

-I want... -Okay, look, ugh...

I don't want to be a hardhead about this. I'll tell you what.

I'll bring the men in on Saturdays,

and that way we can cut off a month,

and you can absorb the overtime cost.

I think we can live with that.

Excuse me, Mr. Sumner. Mr. MacKenzie just drove up.

-MacKenzie? What does he want? -Well, why don't I ask him?

Hi.

What's all this?

Well, I thought I returned Galveston,

your dad's papers, to you.

How come?

It's over. We have the m*rder*r.

-His case is closed. -Great.

Uh...

I'm not interrupting anything, am I?

No, just a bunch of the guys.

-Oh. -Yeah.

You know I sure am glad

we didn't have to go against each other, you know?

Me, too.

I'd like to start things with a clean slate.

And I think you should remember, I'm not Galveston.

Oh, I know. You're his son.

Well, uh, nice seeing you.

Tell me about Laura. My son is so fond of her.

Well, I'm just glad things are finally going well for her.

Finally?

Yes, she has had a very rough time of it.

Oh, especially with that husband of hers.

Oh, I think when he left,

it was the best thing that ever happened to her.

He was trouble.

[chuckles]

Have you ever met a man who was in trouble?

Well, I never met one who was worth a damn or wasn't.

[both laugh]

Sometimes, I wonder if it's worth all the fuss.

Yes, Lilimae.

Because we women always want to be in love.

Therefore, it's worth all the fuss.

Why did, um, Laura's husband leave her?

Well, he was a weak and confused man.

He was a lawyer, but he lost his legal practice.

Then he had himself a sort of nervous breakdown.

Well, he even tried to open a restaurant here,

but that didn't work.

And then when things were just as bad as they could get,

he left.

And no one has ever heard from him since.

I mean, poor Laura.

Finding herself alone,

having to support herself and two kids, it wasn't easy.

That's when she went into the real estate business.

[Lilimae] That's what put her on her feet.

She went to work for Gary Ewing at Lotus Point.

Then she went to work for your son.

Mm-hm.

I think she seems really fine, now.

I think Laura and your son are really good for each other.

Yes, she seemed to have kindled a spirit I thought he'd lost.

Oh, that's wonderful, isn't it?

Yes, it is. For her.

[scoffs]

Gregory, thank you.

So, how do you feel?

There's a lot to deal with.

-I don't know. Numb, I guess. -I understand perfectly.

What you must understand is that the worst is yet to come.

You're performing a very important service

for your country.

Unfortunately, you're going to be misunderstood,

maybe even hated by everyone.

It's a very lonely job.

You're going to have to lie to the people

who are closest to you, who love and trust you.

It's very difficult at first,

but somehow it seems to get a little easier

each time you do it.

Believe me, I know.

[birds chirping]

[intense music]

Gregory Sumner, please. This is Abby Ewing calling.

[sighs]

Well, how long do you think you'll be in the meeting?

Uh, alright, would you ask him to call me as soon as possible?

Yeah. Thank you.

[mellow music]

Everybody, I would like to make an announcement

and toast, okay?

Hold it, hold it, hold it.

[Karen] Hold it, hold it, hold it.

Lift your glasses.

A toast to Eric for his new job

as assistant manager of operations at Lotus Point.

[all cheering]

-Here, here. Good luck. -Congratulations.

-Speech. We want a speech. -Congratulations.

What can I say? I haven't even started yet.

Say thank you and pass the potatoes.

No, no, no, hold, hold, hold, hold on, I have another toast.

Another one, ahem.

To Val. She started a new book today.

-[Mack] Hey, terrific. -[Valene] Oh, stop.

Come on. That's not worth a toast.

-[Ben] Sure, it is. -No, toast me when I finish.

-She's right, forget it. -[Lilimae] Oh, sweet pea.

I'm so glad you got them started.

-Does anyone want potatoes? -I do.

Did you work all day?

Yeah, I... I try to. Yeah.

Whitney, you're... you're still in school, aren't you?

Yes, I'm in my junior year in college.

-So, what are you studying? -History.

I know, what can you do with history?

[Mack] Going to politics, speaking of which,

I returned all of Galveston's papers

to Sumner, today.

Looks like he was having a limousine convention out there.

I've been thinking of either going into teaching

or maybe law.

Either way, it means grad school,

and I'm not sure how much more school I can take.

Well, take my advice, go, get as smart as you can,

then get out in the world and have some fun.

[Ben] How come?

How come there are so many big cars out there?

I don't know.

No, no, no, how come you took papers back to Galveston?

I closed the investigation.

Right.

I just don't have any more interest in it.

I suppose you're probably not interested in going out

with me after dinner tonight to see Gary?

-[Mack] Nope. -[Ben] And when you finish--

What investigation?

Max, the governor's private investigator.

-Oh! -[Mack] Potatoes, potatoes.

Hey, the carrots.

-Yeah, thank you. -Here.

-Mother? -Thank you.

Lover?

[bell rings]

Did Laura tell you we had lunch with Lilimae?

-Together? -Well, of course.

You'd be surprised how much we have in common.

It's a pity you couldn't stay, Laura.

-You didn't stay... -Mrs. Sumner, I'm sorry.

-Hello, Ruth. -Hello.

Hi, Laura. I need to talk to you, Greg.

Well, we were just getting ready to go to dinner.

It's important.

Why don't you two try and get along,

and I'll be right back.

It's surprising how often she drops in, isn't it?

Mmm, like the exterminator.

[chuckles]

Come on, Abby, say what you came to say.

Greg...

I think we both know how important I am

to what you want to do at Empire Valley.

So I suggest that you never, ever

try to use what I'm going to tell you against me.

Alright?

Speak.

[sighs]

When I was working with Scott Easton at Lotus Point,

one of the things he was handling for me

was the water supply problem.

He suggested that he could call Paul Galveston,

talk to him on our behalf, and solve the problem.

[sighs]

Now, during that time, Val was pregnant,

and Gary was, of course...

Come on, will you? I have a dinner appointment.

-Get to the point. Let's go. -Alright.

Alright.

I don't know how it happened or why I said it,

but one day I made a remark

that I was worried about the babies and the...

the kind of effect they would have on Gary.

I said I wished they wouldn't happen.

I...

I didn't mean it. It was some kind of offhand remark is all.

But...

Scott Easton took me seriously.

Wait a second.

Why were you threatened about Val's babies

and what effect would it have on Gary?

Well, you know, um...

Val and Gary were married at one time.

They have a child of their own.

He's always very protective of her. You know that.

Those were Gary's babies, weren't they?

Weren't they?

Yes.

But Gary didn't know about it.

He still doesn't.

So that's why you've been so upset.

If Gary were to find out, you'd be out the door.

Then you'd end up with nothing, eh?

[crickets chirping]

What's that all about? What's up?

-What? -You and Val.

-Nothing. -Yeah, right.

[sighs]

Sometimes when we're together, she's like, she's terrific.

I mean, she's like the old Val, you know?

There are times when we'll... I'll get close.

She throws up this wall, and I can't get around it.

Ben, she's been through a lot.

I know, I know. I'm not trying to crowd her.

But you asked, and it's this wall.

What you have to do is, you just stay with it.

Walls come tumbling down.

If I hadn't kept after Karen,

we'd still be apart and miserable

and all that stuff. Val wants to be with you.

-She needs you. -I know.

Listen, are you gonna come with me to go see Gary?

That's out, no.

I'm sure that I... I... I hurt his feelings.

I didn't mean to, but I... I know I did.

Well, you're just getting used to Ben again, that's all.

You're doing fine.

No, I'm not.

Yes, you are.

I'm not, Karen. I'm acting.

What?

I'm acting the way everyone thinks that I should.

The way I think that everybody wants me to act.

You, Mama, Ben.

From the moment, I wake up in the morning...

until I try to close my eyes at night.

Ben knows... at least I know that he feels it.

[scoffs]

He's so wonderful to me, and I just...

I love him so very much,

but I just can't help the way I'm feeling.

Karen...

I know those babies are alive.

I felt their life inside of me, and it didn't stop.

Do you think that I'm going crazy again?

[sighs]

No. No.

-Sure? -Just give it time.

-You hang in there, okay? -Okay.

-Just give it more time. -Okay.

When Scott Easton left for Washington

he told me I could expect a bonus

when he closed the water rights deal.

I didn't know what he was talking about.

Then Val went into labor.

Gary got a call and went rushing down to the hospital.

I thought, for sure, he'd find out everything

that Val would tell him.

[sighs]

Then he called me and told me that

Val had lost the babies.

I felt terrible. I knew it was awful for her.

Of course, I also knew it was good for me.

[sighs]

That's when I got this strange phone call.

They said they needed

the blood type of the father of the babies.

They needed it for their paperwork.

-What paperwork? -That's the question I asked.

Then I got another phone call.

They said the babies were being placed in a good home

and I was not to worry.

-The babies are alive? -Yeah.

At least I think they are.

Well, if you knew that the babies were alive

why didn't you tell someone?

Why didn't you do something about it?

I did. I tried to find Easton.

I figured if he did it, he could undo it.

And?

It seems he got on a Galveston corporate jet

in Washington

that was flying non-stop here.

Only when it landed here, he wasn't on it.

I don't even think it had anything to do with the babies.

But by the time I found all that out, it was too late.

Val had already disappeared.

-So, you did nothing? -I didn't know what to do.

That's a lot different than not doing anything.

You're awfully quiet, Laura. Do I make you uncomfortable?

You like thinking you make me uncomfortable.

It gives you the edge.

I'd like us to be friends.

After all, you're very close to Gregory and I'm his mother.

And I think we both want what's best for him.

You want what you think is best for Gregory.

And you?

Look, it's late. I've got to get home.

I've got a babysitter.

They seem to have a lot to talk about, don't they?

But I suppose it is important.

It's funny.

Gregory spends more time with Abby

than almost anybody else.

Goodnight, Ruth.

Goodnight, Laura.

Drive safely.

So, Ben, what's up?

Well, I understand there's a big meeting

out of Summoner's ranch today.

Small conference, uh...

Board of directors, routine stuff.

-Nothing I need to know about? -No, not a thing.

Yeah, I was out there today

and Sumner was sh**ting me away

before I could get a chance to say hello.

You know, the further I get into this setup,

the more legitimate it looks.

-How deep have you gone? -[Gary] Pretty deep.

We might actually have to accept the fact

that Empire Valley is exactly what it seems to be.

[chuckles]

Wouldn't that be the joke of the year?

All that digging and spying and they end up being clean?

Well, if I have anything to do with it, which I do,

it's going to stay that way.

More power to you. Good luck.

[sighs]

And what is it you want now?

I want those babies back with Val.

Why?

Because I want an end to this nightmare.

You mean, you want to cover yourself?

Yes, I want to cover myself.

But those babies belong with Val

and the fact that I had anything to do

with keeping them apart is driving me crazy.

I'm touched.

[scoffs]

I don't care whether you're touched or not.

Look...

[sighs]

A few years ago,

when my first husband and I separated

and I moved to Knots Landing, he...

he stole my children.

We couldn't find them for quite some time.

And I know how that felt.

I know how it felt

to feel like you weren't ever going to see your kids again.

I never felt so alone or empty in all my life.

Look, Greg, you know I do what I have to do

to get what I want.

But I don't do this.

I don't take babies away from their mother.

And now you're having trouble living with your complicity.

It wasn't complicity.

Uh, look, I just need Galveston's papers.

I know the answer to where the babies are,

is in there somewhere.

Help yourself. Take them.

That's them?

That's them. All of them.

[sighs]

But I want one thing understood.

I don't ever want to hear another word about this again.

-Ever. Okay? -You got it.

[sighs]

Thanks.

I hope you find what you're looking for.

Me, too.

[instrumental music]

Eric, pour me one, will you?

Good, thanks.

So?

Ah... So what?

-So what do you think? -What do I think about what?

Whitney.

I told you at the wedding

there must be something wrong with her

if she's going out with the likes of you.

-So you really liked her? -Yeah.

-She's pretty cute, isn't she? -Very cute.

I like the hell out of her and I'm going to bed.

Goodnight.

Goodnight.

[birds chirping]

[grunting]

[Mack] Stop, you thief. What are you doing, huh?

Karen, my wallet. What are you doing?

Karen, if you wanted money, just ask.

You told me to get you something concrete

and now I've got it.

Your investigator ID card.

What are you going to do with my ID card?

You.

You can intimidate her, that... that Nurse Wilson.

I know, Mack, if you just give her a little push,

she's going to break.

[sighs] No way.

Karen, that's not a bed. I'm not a cop.

So what? This looks very impressive.

She's never going to know the difference.

I'll know the difference.

-[sighs] Karen, it's ill*gal. -ill*gal shmeagle.

Who's talking about ill*gal?

Just ask her a few questions, that's all?

Anything I find out, they'll throw out of court.

I don't care about going to court.

[breathes deeply]

I just want to get those babies back to Val.

You know it's a shame about Laura's husband leaving her

and the children like that, isn't it?

Still, it, um... it does make you wonder.

Give it up, will you?

I am only looking after your interest, darling.

I can't quite figure out

how that woman fits into your life.

Oh, like a glove, ma, like a glove.

You're in a very important position now, Gregory.

You can't afford mistakes.

I'll take that under advisement.

-Coffee? -Mm-hmm.

Well, I'll try to be nice to her.

I didn't ask you to be nice to her.

I'm always nice to your friends. Take Abby Ewing.

You take her. I've had her.

I like that girl. She's got a lot of spunk.

Well, you always were a great judge of character.

-Croissant, mums. -Mm-mm.

So, what do you think?

-About what? -Whitney.

You wanted to meet her and now you met her,

so what do you think?

She's adorable. Just...

Very sweet. Very... pretty, very bright.

[sighs]

What?

-Oh, I... I gotta go to work. -Oh, oh, honey, wait a minute.

Before you go, uh,

could you drop these off at Val's for me, please?

-Sure. See you later. -Okay.

That was the nicest dinner last night, huh?

And your little girlfriend is so cute.

Everyone tells me how cute my girlfriend is.

-Oh, what's wrong with that? -Nothing.

Eric, watch your blood pressure. Sit down.

I'm sorry.

I don't know.

I knew my folks would be fine about Whitney.

It's just...

Well, it's as if they didn't even notice.

-Notice what? -Ugh, you too?

Oh, that. Eric.

I didn't know you were so old-fashioned.

Old-fashioned? I'm not old-fashioned.

Oh, yes, you are.

You want to be a star-crossed lover.

-No. -Yes, I think so.

[gaps] Well, you have to find another problem.

I mean, Whitney is just as cute as she can be.

And that's all there is to it.

We've come a long way since Romeo and Juliet.

[chuckles]

There's no problem, Eric.

You just have to throw away the poison.

-Have a piece of cake. -Okay.

[both chuckle]

[soft music]

[sighs]

[music continues]

[theme music]
