05x09 - Money Talks

Post by bunniefuu »

-No, not yet. -I thought you were paid

to keep him informed.

There are some things that Gary's just happier

-not knowing. -And what makes you happy?

Money.

And who would watch me?

World traveler like you, you don't need to be watched.

Well, this world traveler is falling in love.

Is your marriage in trouble?

[chuckles]

It's about the only thing that isn't.

I'm not for sale.

Is that what you came here to tell me?

[music intensifies]

[theme music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[intense music]

Honey...

I've got a couple of short meetings in town.

I can speed 'em up and be back here by 12.

Or if you wanna come with me right now,

we can have lunch in the marina--

I'll never see him again.

Oh, honey.

I betrayed my own husband.

What you did was not betrayal.

He'd be a free man.

No, neither of you would really be free.

-[Abby] Not ever. -We'd be together.

But you'd be running from the truth

for the rest of your lives.

Instead, he's running from me, from what I did.

No, he is not running from what you did,

he is running from what he did.

You've got to believe that.

He must hate me.

Mrs. Ewing.

[Abby] Did you find anything?

Oh, they checked out the rest of the ranch,

but there's no sign that Chip's been here.

There's still a chance he might show up.

He won't.

He might wanna settle a score.

That's a stupid thing to say.

You're not scaring me.

Look, I wanna put some men on the ranch around the clock.

-Never! -Police protection.

I don't wanna be protected by you.

I wanna be protected from you.

Uh, we'll talk later, alright?

I'm going to get him.

Just go away, Detective Morrison.

[Mr. Morrison] You'll see. I'm gonna get him.

Sergeant, call the men in.

[door creaks]

Mr. Jezik.

-[door locks] -Mr. MacKenzie.

Or should I call you commissioner?

No, you still call me Mack.

How you been, Tom?

I've been keeping up on you in the papers.

Very impressive. Very impressive.

Thank you.

But if you've come to get my vote vote on your buddy,

uh, Sumner,

I'm afraid I lost that privilege when you sent me up here.

It's not my fault you're up here.

-Yeah? -[Mack] Yeah.

It's a matter of opinion.

-I want your help. -[scoffs]

It's dangerous enough up here, Mack.

I don't need to make it any more dangerous--

[Mack] Not that kind of help.

Oh, yeah, I can help specialize your license--

Legally.

I was disbarred.

-Remember? -Yeah.

You're still the best legal mind in California,

and I need it.

Why would I help you?

Because you're sorry for what you did.

That's a joke.

And because you tried to beat the law and it beat you instead.

Give it up.

And because it's nice out there.

And you're up for parole in two weeks,

and I'm the prosecuting attorney.

What?

And that parole board's gonna wanna know

how I feel about you.

Aren't they gonna be impressed

when I tell them that I've appointed you

to my crime commission staff?

[Mack] My first appointment.

Yeah, you can't do that.

-No? -Never.

You either help me make the law work out there,

or you can stay in here and read about it.

Doug.

Why?

[Mack] You're too good to be on the other side.

[door knob rattles]

See you in two weeks.

-[door locks] -[keys jingle]

[feel-good music]

-[Abby] Hello. -Good morning.

The purchase of the 18-0 management company

-went without a hitch. -[chuckles] Alright.

We can develop the property you own with Karen,

and she'll never know the difference.

Terrific.

Except for the Coastal Commission

and their environmental impact reports.

[exhales] They'll save the whale folks.

And many others... including your husband.

So? What?

There are two things we can do about it.

We can apply for building permits

through the normal channels

and wait two years for a rejection.

No, no, no, no. What else?

Or get a variance from a commissioner

and build right away.

Who do we know on the Coastal Commission?

We don't know anyone.

But your friend Sumner does.

[chuckles softly]

Elizabeth, would you get me Greg Sumner on the phone?

[Elizabeth] Right away.

Well, after all,

what are campaign contributions all about

if you can't call in a favor every now and then?

I don't wanna be a pessimist,

but Sumner's known to be untouchable.

[Elizabeth] Assemblyman Sumner's on the line.

I guess you just have to know where to touch.

Greg?

Hi. Thanks for taking my call.

Never too busy for my constituents.

What can I do for you?

[Abby] Well, um, I'll get right to the point.

I'm sitting on some wonderful property on the coast

that I'd like to put to some profitable use,

but, uh, there are some silly details preventing me.

-Silly details? -Silly details?

[indistinct chatter]

Yeah, lots and lots of red tape,

and I don't have, uh, scissors.

No scissors?

Look, I know how busy you are,

so I wouldn't dream of involving you personally in this,

but maybe you could put me in touch

with someone on the Coastal Commission

who would be sympathetic to the kind of thing I'm doing.

Excuse me!

You can't just barge in here.

[inhales deeply]

I'm sorry, I've just had a very rude interruption.

Could I call you back in a little while?

Yeah, get back to me in a little while.

Great. Great.

I asked her to wait.

[Abby] Karen, don't you ever walk into a room?

-Do you always-- -My daughter's in danger!

I wanna know what you're doing for her!

Your daughter is not in danger.

The police were at the ranch all morning--

-Are they protecting her? -We're protecting her!

You're protecting her? What does that mean?

That means we're doing the best we can.

-Your best? -Yes, my best, damn it!

Let me remind you that she is where she is

because you forced her into making

the most serious mistake of her entire life,

and you still think it's her fault, not yours.

Well, what she needs right now is more than police protection.

She needs love and understanding and trust...

which is why she's at my house,

and which is why I'm doing my best.

And in the meantime, Karen, stay out of my office

and stay out of my life...

because I don't like you.

[instrumental music]

[clunks]

God help you if your best isn't enough.

Rumor has that that you have become richer.

Well, I think we just about reached the point

where we don't have to ask the price of things anymore.

Oh, that is a nice point.

[exhales] Yep.

Were you able to buy that land in Wyoming

we talked about?

No, as soon as they found out it was you,

they doubled the price.

-Can they do that? -They did it.

-Fine anyway. -Look...

Why don't I start a subsidiary company

without the Ewing name and try to buy at

-the old price? -It's a great idea.

I'll sign whatever documents you need.

-Okay. -[Gary] Hi.

Hi. I'm sorry about yesterday. I got hung up.

[Gary] No, that's alright.

Um, this is my friend Laura Avery.

[Gary] Laura, this is Cathy Geary.

Incredible, isn't it?

So, all this land yours?

Every clump. Wanna take a look around?

Well, I don't wanna interrupt anything.

[Gary] No, you're not.

No, I was just on my way.

Where...

My honeymoon. [chuckles]

-[Gary] Come on! -Bye.

[instrumental music]

[Gary] Okay, over here, we got the pond,

and right up here is the pool...

[Valene] So, the doctors asked me not to visit mama

for two weeks.

Here, I can't even make it through the first day.

Come to visit me instead.

They said it's like parents leaving their child

in summer camp for the first time.

The parents are asked not to visit

for the first couple of weeks

because it's always harder on the parent

than it is on the child.

From my experience, they're right.

It's always harder on the parent.

Karen...

-How's-- -How's Ben?

He's not...

I think I scared him away with all the craziness.

[Valene] Every time, the moment seems right,

something in my life goes wrong.

My life feels so complicated compared to his right now.

Maybe you're making it complicated on purpose.

Maybe you don't want it to work...

or maybe you're getting too old.

What?

Then go for it.

The sales tables for the first three quarters of 1983,

H&O six-month activity report,

and a board of equalization extension form

for Appaloon incorporated.

You have to sign by the paperclip.

This is your day for grand entrances.

Greg! What a nice surprise!

[Greg] Hold all of Mrs. Ewing's calls.

No exceptions.

[thuds]

I had some news that couldn't wait.

The Coastal Commission?

The Coastal Commission.

Don't ever call me on the phone

and suggest something like that again!

Who the hell do you think you are?

-Well, I only meant that-- -I knew what you meant.

I've been involved in politics my entire life.

I worked too long and too hard

to let someone with a misguided sense of citizenship

-screw me up. -Funny.

You didn't feel my contributions were misguided, did you--

Your contributions don't have anything to do--

They have everything to do with this.

I consider them gifts.

Well, start considering them investments

that should pay off.

If you're gonna hang around,

you're gonna have to learn to understand politics.

I understand money.

They're not the same thing.

[soft chuckle] Since when?

I'm not for sale.

Is that what you came here to tell me?

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[waves crashing]

Ben!

[knocking]

Hello?

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[sizzling]

[sighs]

I had a conversation with your mother yesterday.

Well, not really a conversation.

I lost my temper.

I shouldn't have, but... [inhales deeply]

Anyway, she was worried about you.

She came to my office

trying to make sure you were alright.

Did she demand that I go home?

No, no, nothing like that.

Because I'm never gonna go back there again. Never!

Uh-uh-uh! Never say never.

Do you want me to go?

Oh, no, honey.

I don't want you to go anyplace.

Then what?

I'm worried about you and me.

[Abby] I'm worried that you might think

that I could replace your mom.

I don't expect you to replace her.

Because nobody can replace her, you know?

What do you want me to do?

I want you to stay right here.

I want you to make yourself comfortable.

I want you to take as long as you need

to work out your problems.

[Abby] And Gary and I will be right here to help you.

I just don't want us to solve the problems

by running away from them.

Is that what you think I'm doing,

running away from my problems?

[Abby] No, not yet.

But it's a real easy mistake to make.

I know, I... [inhales deeply]

made it myself a couple of times.

I can't imagine you running away from anything.

And I'll try not to, too.

-Good. -I promise.

Okay.

[door opens]

-[door closes] -[exhales sharply]

-[overlapping chatter] -I don't believe it!

I do not believe it!

I got to make a speech tomorrow boasting about the progress

you've made with the crime commission.

And so far to date, you've appointed one guy

who happens to be in jail.

You know as well as I do, there's a better guy

-around to come. -[on phone] May I help you?

Court, that's all I know!

What in the hell has gotten into this husband of yours?

How am I gonna make that speech tomorrow?

...speech about something else.

[indistinct chatter]

-Court, it's MacKenzie. -Think about the economy!

Listen, we're gonna have to get together later tonight

and hammer this thing up. The speech has got to be

about the crime commission.

Good idea. We'll do it at our house.

We'll have a deli and then maybe we can talk

about the Palisades district.

We really need a plan there, I'll tell you that.

We need more than a plan. I am loathed in that district.

-Hello? -Greg.

Hi, it's Abby.

Well, hi.

I'd like to see you.

Well, isn't that nice? Thank you.

How about dinner tonight?

Dinner? Gee, I can't.

I just made plans.

A drink, then?

Gee, I tell you, that's a good idea.

-No, she's right here. -Sounds good...

But listen, I'm due at the tailor shop

in a few minutes at the hotel.

The tailor in your hotel?

Yeah. Holy cow, listen, I'm running late.

I got to get out of here. Thanks for calling. Goodbye.

Tom Jezik has the most--

How could you appoint a convict?

How could you do that to me?

[humming]

[yelps]

Yes, Susan, I know.

[knocking on door]

I know that, Susan, but this is the best we can do right now.

I can be there in 30 minutes.

Hi.

-Can I come in? -Yeah.

No, not you, Susan!

I was talking to somebody here.

-In there? -No.

-Yeah, thanks. -No! Nothing.

Susan, look. Something's come up here.

Why don't I just get off the phone?

I'm gonna see you in a few minutes.

Don't run it.

Just trust me.

Yes. Goodbye, Susan.

-Hi. -Uh... hi?

Could we try dinner again?

This time, I'll cook.

Well, in that case, uh, yeah.

There's a small problem though. They need me at the station.

-And it may take a couple-- -Oh, that's okay. It's alright.

Well, you sure it won't screw you up?

Oh, no, no. Not at all.

I was afraid I was gonna have to cook in front of you anyway.

I'll be back as quickly as I can.

Take your time. I'll be here.

You should be able to find everything that you need.

Okay.

You can reach me at the station if you need me.

Great.

Great.

Great.

[instrumental music]

[Greg] Dominic, I like, uh, a little less break.

Makes me look taller.

-Just curious. -What's curious?

Mrs. Ewing is standing outside the window

watching you get measured.

Not so curious.

Greg, is that you?

-It's all three of me. -Oh, isn't that funny?

You're just the man I wanted to see.

I've got something kind of important

that I'd like to talk to you about.

Oh, well, maybe we can set a meeting.

Bob, is there some time we could set aside for Mrs. Ewing?

I really can't wait.

Well, I'm a c*ptive audience.

Well, it's somewhat sensitive.

I have a suggestion, though.

My car's in the shop, and I'm gonna need a lift to my office.

Maybe we could talk in your car.

That is, if you're going my way.

What kind of guy wouldn't be going your way?

[dog barking in the distance]

[Cathy] You know, when you called, [heavy breathing]

-I almost didn't come. -Aha.

And miss all this fun?

Yeah.

I figured

no one's ever used that kind of line on me before.

What, uh, "Come up and see my barbells"?

[chuckles] Yes. Don't make me laugh.

[laughs]

-Oh. -Here.

[exhales sharply] Thanks.

Well, I'm glad you came.

Are you kidding? If this was my place,

I'd never leave.

You can use it whenever you want.

You know, I don't get you.

Not much to get.

Is your marriage in trouble?

[chuckles]

It's about the only thing that isn't.

I'm a newlywed.

You served us our honeymoon dinner!

Yeah.

Um,

the other day, when I waited for you at that restaurant...

why didn't you get out of your car and join me?

[sighs] You saw me.

Yeah, I watched you watching me.

[exhales sharply]

I thought you'd been sent by my ex.

He has a habit of doing that,

sending ambassadors of ill will wanting me to come home.

I don't know why. He knows it's over.

And that I'd rather die before going back there.

But ever so often,

like a nightmare, some slug shows up

loaded with bribes and threats.

Boy, you don't know how relieved I was to follow you here

and find out you weren't one of 'em.

All I want is a little peace and quiet

and a day without that worry, you know?

Hmm.

I bought this place for pretty much that same reason.

If it works for me, it might work for you.

-Stay as long as you like. -Stay?

-[Gary] Hmm. -And do what?

-Have fun. -[chuckles]

You're weird. [giggles]

[laughs]

You know, the trouble with these limousines

is that glass partition keeps out the sound

but not the sight.

I could wrench my knee playing footsies.

You are really nuts.

Aren't there blinds or drapes or anything?

What is it with you?

I don't know. I can't seem to help it.

It's been a long time since I've been in the back seat of a car.

My body seems to have a conditioned response.

[chuckles]

I wanna see you tonight.

I wish I could.

Well, I could call home and say,

"Business is keeping me in town overnight."

We can't.

We can't?

Right, I can't.

Or won't.

You surprise me.

Well, you're the one that's full of surprises,

aren't you?

I give you money, and you deny you're in debt.

We make love, and you deny you feel it.

I may have loved you last night

because you're gorgeous and sexy,

and tempting and dangerous,

and because I wanted to make love to you.

What were you doing?

Lobbying?

Well, maybe we ought to set some new ground rules.

Well, that's just it, you see. It's not a game.

This is as far as I can take it.

[razor vibrates]

[door closes]

[Greg] I gave him the idea, you'll have to forgive me

if I'm appearing to be a little dense.

Can I have some coffee, Carol?

So, go ahead, tell me how I gave you the idea.

When you introduced me at the press conference,

you said I would bring new perspectives to old problems.

Well, you said the only perspective

I was missing was from behind bars.

That's a great idea.

I just wish that I thought about it first.

[Greg] Don't be silly. Take all the credit.

I just wanna know one thing. What does this guy know

that you don't already know?

This is the kind of thing that gets on the 11 o'clock news.

You end up staring at the ceiling all evening.

Come on. Tom Jezik has an incredible understanding

of the legal system.

He not only understands the law,

he understands the legal system.

The law, you know, the law is fine,

but the system stinks.

I'm gonna fix that, and I want him to help me.

I don't understand him.

You know, I don't think the people

are gonna understand you.

Greg, two things.

One,

the best lawyers in this country are being paid

to skirt the laws instead of obeying them.

[Mack] And I'm gonna fix that.

Two, you just worry about the 11 o'clock news.

-[bell rings] -[Greg laughs]

-Saved by the bell. -And number three.

I'm gonna have another beer. You want one?

There is obviously a simple solution to our problem.

Just don't hire the guy. You got a light?

-[Karen] Well, wait a minute. -Beer?

Yeah. Beer.

Hey, I ought to have my head examined.

I spent the entire trip from Sacramento

thinking about you and me.

About your world affairs and my junior proms.

About your attack on poverty and mine on puberty.

About your kitchen cabinets and mine.

And I finally decided

that in spite of all our differences

that we're really a lot alike...

that I'm still a chip off the old block.

But after waiting at the station for two hours,

after being stood up again,

I've begun to wonder whether being like you

is an asset or a liability.

So, why didn't you call?

So, why didn't you remember?

Will a little food help?

[Mary-Frances scoffs]

You're lucky I'm hungry.

[Greg] Aw, I'm sorry, sweetheart.

-[Mary-Frances] I know. -I do love you.

[chuckles] I know.

That was a great speech!

-I know. [chuckles] -It was fantastic.

We're getting ready to write another one.

Maybe you can help.

Oh, guys, I'd like you to meet the love of my life,

my daughter Mary-Frances.

A chip off the old block.

-[chuckles] -Isn't she great?

[fire crackling]

What's the matter, Ab?

Abby, come on, talk to me.

I don't wanna talk to you.

Is it something I've done? What is it?

It's nothing.

What does that mean?

[inhales deeply] It means I wanna be alone.

That's all. I'm tired. I've had a rough day,

and I just wanna be alone!

Okay, don't take it out on me.

I'm not taking it out on you!

If I were taking it out on you, you'd know it.

So, don't accuse me of taking it out on you.

[exhales] You wouldn't understand anyway.

All you do is walk around here all day and play cowboy.

[door opens, closes]

[instrumental music]

You know, it's nice not eating alone.

It's only the third or...

fourth time since I've lived here

that I've had someone over for dinner...

Well, because in this case,

someone's had me over here for dinner.

[chuckles]

Why?

I'm a lousy cook.

Oh, stop it. You are not.

Tell me why. Really.

Well, there is no why, really. I...

You know... [exhales sharply]

for one thing, there aren't a hell of a lot of people

in this world that I would wanna have dinner with.

[instrumental music]

And this place is...

my sanctuary.

Special.

Private.

So...

leave it to me to just barge right on in!

You don't go barging right...

Well, yeah, occasionally, you do go barging right, yeah.

Well, I guess you can take the girl out of the country,

but you can't take the country...

You're no bumpkin.

You're wrong.

You don't really know me.

I'm working on it.

It's getting late.

For what?

I should be getting home.

I, uh...

thought you planned to stay.

Why do you say that?

There's a toothpaste in the shopping bag.

Stay.

Alright, let me walk you to your car.

No, I, it's okay. I'll just let myself out.

[instrumental music]

[speaks softly] Fine.

Patience.

Patience.

[Mack] American Society Today.

Karen, you've got to read this. It's terrific.

Oh, I feel like I can give the speech in my sleep.

[yawns]

I shouldn't have taken that pill.

Hi.

Oh, hi.

-How was your date? -It was great.

You're not mad that I'm so late?

Nah, you're allowed every once in a while.

So, mom, can I ask you a stupid question?

[Karen] What?

Who's that girl sleeping out there on the couch?

Holy cow.

What are we gonna do about Mary-Frances?

[Karen sighs]

No problem. She stays here, that's all.

I couldn't do that to you guys.

Maybe Greg's right, Mack.

She might wanna spend the night with her father.

The problem is I don't have any accommodations

arranged for her at the hotel,

and I'm gonna be on the road tomorrow

the whole day.

Well, that's it. She stays here.

We have plenty of room at the house.

Stay here as long as she likes.

[Greg] I really appreciate it, you guys.

Goodnight.

Night.

[sighs]

[crickets chirping]

[instrumental music]

[inhales deeply]

[knocking on door]

[music continues]

I know you were just being polite.

I'm not saying it was your fault.

It's... It's just that he should've made arrangements

for his own daughter, that's all.

I know, but Karen, come on,

let's cut him a little slack, huh?

He's on a very busy schedule,

and we're just doing the neighborly thing,

being friends, that's all.

You're right. I don't know.

It's just that [sighs]

I feel sorry for her, that's all.

-Good morning. -Oh, good morning.

-How'd you sleep? -[Mary-Frances] Great.

Except I didn't know where I was when I woke up.

If it wasn't for all the family portraits around,

I don't know what I would have done.

Good morning.

[Karen] Good...

Sit anywhere, Eric.

[chuckles]

Oh, um, Mary-Frances,

I don't believe you met our son Eric.

Eric, this is Greg Sumner's daughter, Mary-Frances.

Nice to meet you.

Very nice to meet you.

Mary-Frances slept over here last night.

You know, your father's gonna give quite a speech today.

He's gonna step on some toes.

I've read you're gonna step on a few toes yourself.

-Really? -Yeah.

Oh, somebody's got to do it. [chuckles]

[Mary-Frances chuckles]

Who are you?

And why are you so dressed up?

[chuckles awkwardly]

[instrumental music]

[Valene] Ben?

Yeah, in here.

Good morning.

Morning.

Want some?

It's fresh squeezed.

Thank you.

[music continues]

Well, I was thirsty.

Yeah. [chuckles]

I had been waiting all morning for that.

You should've just come in and told me.

Okay, well, then, uh, next time, I'll know.

Next time, and time after that,

and time after that, time after that.

And I think I sold Gary on the idea

of forming a subsidiary company

to buy that land in Wyoming.

[Abby] Good.

But you know, instead of forming a new company,

I think we should use a subsidiary

that already exists.

What do you mean?

H&O Management.

[phone buzzes]

Yes?

Gregory Sumner on line three.

Tell him I'll call him back.

Go on.

Well, that way, it would lend H&O credence.

[Abby] How?

Because then it wouldn't appear

as if you were buying a company

for the sole purpose of tricking your sister-in-law.

Does Gary know about this idea?

-No, not yet. -I thought

you were paid to keep him informed.

There are some things that he's just happier

not knowing.

And what makes you happy?

Money.

[Laura] No, not a handout.

A chance to earn it.

[Abby] How?

By getting in on the ground floor.

By getting a piece of the profits.

Profits...

are a matter of great secrecy in our business.

Well, I just love secrets.

[waves crashing]

[chuckles] Oh, here is Betsy.

-Betsy? -Hello, Betty!

-Hi! -Hi!

[chuckles]

Beautiful! Who does she belong to? Come here, girl!

-Come on! -Well...

Old Bets is a child of the universe

that right now is staying with the farmer.

Isn't she beautiful?

-Yeah! -Yeah.

You know, you have to get a dog.

Thought about it.

And?

-Bye, Betsy! -I don't know.

I always travel too much.

Yeah, but you don't travel too much anymore.

Even if you did, I could watch her for you.

You'd watch my dog?

Sure would.

And who would watch me?

World traveler like you, you don't need to be watched.

Well, this world traveler is falling in love,

and he needs to be watched day and night.

Oh, day and night?

-Day and night. -Oh, that's an awful lot.

That's the nice part of it.

[instrumental music]

So?

So?

So, why don't you get a dog?

[Gary] This is great. [exhales]

I wish I could afford to buy the whole state.

Ah, today, Wyoming, tomorrow, the world, right?

[chuckles softly]

Listen, if you don't have to rush back,

why don't you go for a ride with me?

No, I-I really have to get going. Here.

Gary, who is this Cathy Geary?

I mean, where does she come from?

It's wild, isn't it?

I tell you, when I first saw her,

I thought I'd lost my mind.

Well, what does she want?

Want? What do you mean?

Well, doesn't it strike you as a bit odd?

[chuckles]

No more than anything else around here.

Sure you don't wanna go for a ride with me?

No, not if I'm gonna get this bid in.

I sure am glad I don't understand

what it is you're doing.

-What do you mean? -Well, I mean,

I think if I really understood real estate,

the figures would scare me to death.

No, it'd take an awful lot of figures to do that.

How's Abby feel about all this?

She's pretty enthusiastic, actually.

Is that good?

So far, as we can tell,

Malibu is as safe as it's ever been.

d*ck Cupper has assured me

that the town council out there

is prepared to go along

their school board decision enthusiastically.

Now, the Pacific Palisades, on the other hand,

is a different story entirely.

Assemblyman Sumner. Hello.

-Mrs. Ewing, how are you? -I'm returning your call.

Oh, Carol, why don't you, uh,

explain to them how we plan to handle the Palisades?

Would you like to step into my office?

Okay.

[Carol] Okay.

We all know that they hate us in the Palisades.

They've been on the other side of the aisle since, uh...

What is this?

[chuckles] You called me.

Well, you could have called me back.

Does it bother you that I came down here?

Do I make you nervous?

Well, that's a complicated question.

Well, I'm a complicated woman.

Maybe too complicated.

Too complicated or too much?

What's the difference?

Well, if I'm too complicated, I could simplify,

but if I'm too much, you're out of luck.

Oh, well, then maybe you better simplify.

Okay.

[exhales]

You're a politician on the rise.

I'm a businesswoman on the rise.

You're heading for national politics.

I'm heading for national business.

If things go according to plan,

you'll be in the White House in eight years,

which is exactly where we both want you.

You for the thrill of it, me for the profit.

Now, I like my marriage.

I assume you like yours.

Our lovemaking has nothing to do with that.

Because if I ever have to make a choice

between love and money,

money's gonna win every time.

Simple enough?

Couldn't be simpler.

Good.

[instrumental music]

You never told me why you called.

[sighs]

Oh, there's a...

there's a guy on the, uh...

[exhales] Coastal Commission

who would just love to meet you.

[theme music]
