[theme music]
[siren blaring]
You'll be okay.
It's alright, honey.
It's gonna be alright.
Honey, you're gonna be alright.
You're gonna be okay.
I'm right here with you.
There's a bed empty in number three.
Looks pretty bad.
Please be careful.
[indistinct chatter on PA]
What's the problem?
-Can you wait outside, please? -Is he gonna be alright?
The doctor will talk to you as soon as
we've had a chance to examine him.
I'm his wife!
[indistinct chatter]
[dramatic music]
Is room three available?
Alright, look, this doesn't make any sense at all.
Let's go over it again, Mrs. McKenzie.
But this time slow.
One step at a time.
That's just the thing. It all happened so fast.
One minute he was in front of the car,
then the car lurched forward
and it suddenly lost control.
Were you driving?
No, she was.
[Max] Is that it, Mrs. Clements?
Did the car go out of control?
Look, this could be a pretty serious matter.
Reckless driving is no joke.
Have you got a driver's license?
Of course she's got a license.
Something must have gone wrong with the car.
Hey, is she okay?
Look,
this has been a shock.
The car went out of control and she was just...
[Lilimae] I saw him.
I put my foot on the gas.
-I hit him. -[Max] What?
I saw him step off the curb.
He came in front of the car.
I put my foot on the gas and I hit him.
Don't say anything else until you've got a lawyer.
He was going to go free.
Mrs. Clements,
I have the duty to tell you
that you have the right to remain silent.
If you give up this right to remain silent,
anything you say can and will be held against you
in a court of law.
But I only did what needed to be done.
[Max] Please remain silent.
[dramatic music]
[Jim] Now, Abby, you've got to listen to me.
I've broken it all down.
$500 down from the ranch.
Hey, that was Gary's idea.
Besides, it'll bring in money eventually.
$72,000 a year rent for this place.
And it's well worth it.
Another $40,000 in overhead,
$250 for corporate officers' salaries.
-Well, after all. -Yeah.
A quarter of a million into that shopping center,
$15,000 a month in interest payments.
Jim, you know as well as I do
that tax credit alone on that investment
make it worthwhile.
The point is,
you've got a $75,000 a month nut
and you've only got a million a year.
Plus interest.
You need money.
You know what's ridiculous about this whole thing?
Once Gary's new inheritance comes in,
all of this can come out of petty cash.
Gary's money is Gary's money.
-Unless you marry him. -I'll marry him.
When? His inheritance comes due next week.
I'll marry him before that.
Community property applies to that which accrues
while the couple is married.
If he walks into the marriage with that money already his,
he walks out of the marriage with it when...
that is, if he goes.
I know all that.
Look, you keep the books
and I'll marry Gary. And...
I'll marry him before next week.
She knew what she was getting into when she married me.
Heck, I knew when I was in college
that one day I'd run for the Senate.
You knew in the third grade that you'd be president.
Everybody in the third grade wants to be president.
Guess I just never grew up.
Was she giving you a hard time?
She hates it.
She'd rather be at home reading a book.
Campaigning can be a terrible experience
for a woman who would prefer to be at home reading a book.
And yet, if your wife's not by your side,
the public asks questions.
It's all such a sham.
Oh, you love it. You know it.
It's exciting.
So why don't you take this job?
Because I got a job.
-But you hate that job. -I love the job.
It's the rest of my life that's driving me up the wall.
Give us two, please.
What's happening with the schlub?
His hearing's today.
If they don't pin anything on him, he walks.
Take the job on the crime commission.
Mustard.
Then you can go after the schlubs, lock them up,
and throw away the key.
If it were only that easy.
Someone else would have done the job.
Then I wouldn't need you now.
Come on, will you, Greg?
I'm not the commissioner type.
It's the pinstripe suits.
It's the wingtip shoes all over again.
Listen, Mack. You can wear your pajamas to work for all I care.
I'm interested in results, not procedure.
I asked you for a half hour. Can't I get a half hour here?
There's a phone call for Mr. McKenzie.
Phone's in the car.
See, I think this is a fantastic opportunity for you.
You can kick your whole career into a different phase.
You can get out and really get a job done.
You get exposure.
You never want to run for office for yourself.
It's a place to launch from. It is.
Come on, get in.
Mack McKenzie.
-What? -And she's been arrested.
They're holding her now. Chip's in critical condition
and nobody can find Val.
Alright, I'll be right over.
Got a problem?
You wouldn't believe it if I told you.
Can this thing give me a lift?
Sure.
So I'm not the only one who feels this way.
-Writing is hard. -Yeah.
Everybody thinks they can do it, of course.
But to actually sit there, staring down the blank page,
that's quite a victory.
Why do you think I took this job running the news bureau?
Why'd you take this job running the news bureau?
I'm glad you asked me that.
[both laugh]
It's the only way in the world
I could be a newsman without
actually having to write.
See, I have other people.
Tell them what to write now.
Do this over, be more concise.
Give me five pages in the morning.
[beeping]
What was that?
My beeper.
What?
You might as well know.
What?
I'm Superman.
Excuse me.
[chuckles]
Lilimae?
I know it's unbelievable, but it's true.
She ran him over in cold blood.
They're holding her now.
Was Val with her?
I don't think Val knows about this.
Nobody knows where she is.
Karen told me to leave her a note.
Where are you going?
-Gary? -See if I can help.
What is it?
-My divorce. -Oh.
[engine cranks]
Thanks. I'll be going down there myself.
No, no, it's okay. I have to go down there.
Yeah.
There's been an accident.
Chip Roberts was run over.
They're holding your mom.
Mrs. Roberts?
Yes?
We'll be taking your husband into surgery shortly.
Is he gonna be alright?
Well, it was a bad accident. He's pretty beat up.
He's got two fractured ribs and a broken arm.
There's a lot of internal bleeding.
Can I see him?
Not now. We're prepping him for surgery. It'll take a few hours.
Why don't you have some lunch and a cup of coffee?
Is there any family here with you?
No.
Well, relax and try to take it easy.
I'll let you know as soon as there's any further information.
-Ben. -Val.
-Karen, where's my mama? -She's upstairs with the lawyer.
-Excuse me. What's happening? -We're waiting for a statement.
So far all we know is the kid's condition is serious
and they've got the old lady on charges.
Isn't that the daughter of the author? Peter, let's go.
I'd like to see my mother, Mrs. Lilimae Clements.
Excuse me, Mrs. Ewing, can we please have a statement?
No, you cannot have a statement.
-Leave her-- -Please, Mrs. Ewing.
Ben, this is a hot story.
You'll get your statement later.
[Val] Lilimae Clements.
She was involved in an accident.
It must be there. No, it's alright.
Valene.
I came as soon as I heard.
I want to do what I can to help.
Because if it's a question of raising bail,
I'd be happy to do what I can.
I don't think that that's going to be necessary.
-Mrs. Ewing? -Yes.
-Hello. -Hello.
-I'm Max Eisner. -Howdy.
How is my mother? Is she alright?
Well, frankly, I don't think she is.
I want to order a psychiatric evaluation as soon as possible.
Why?
I know she's in a state of shock,
but still she seems to have no idea
of the seriousness of what she's done.
She is in there right now admitting to everything
but the Lindbergh kidnapping.
Well, can't I see her?
How much is bail?
-$100,000. -What?
Valene, I could raise that and give it to you.
No, Gary, I don't want that.
No, it wouldn't be hard to do, really.
That won't be necessary.
Can't raise that I can lend you enough
to go to a bail bondsman.
Can't I just see my mother?
I've asked them to let us know as soon as she's been processed.
-Processed? -They're gonna take her to jail.
But she won't have to stay there.
We can get her out on bail right away.
-Mack. -They took her upstairs.
-I've gotta see her. -She wants to see you, too.
Would you take Valene, please.
Valene, you want me to wait?
Karen, I'm going to need to talk to you.
You're a material witness.
But I don't know. It just happened so fast.
I didn't see anything.
[sighs] What a mess, huh?
-Well, let's go. -I want to see Diana.
-Karen. -Mack.
[instrumental music]
I've always known beneath
that batty little old lady exterior there
beat the heart of a k*ller.
Look, Chip might die.
Diana's with him now.
And, um, Gary's with Val.
He just wanted to see if there's anything he could do to help.
What is he doing? Giving them money?
I don't know.
Well...
did you look into that property that I asked you to?
Mm-hmm.
Do you know that you, uh, you own that with Karen?
With Karen?
Well, it seems your uncle left a share to you,
and also a share to Sid,
so that share went to Karen.
Well, what is it?
It's a fourplex on the coast near Lotus Point.
There's something very strange about it, though.
Really? What?
Well, I say it's worth maybe,
I don't know, $150,000, $175,000.
And after nosing around, I got offers
of $300,000 to $400,000.
-I wonder why. -I don't know.
I guess it's just more valuable than we realized.
-[knock on door] -Interesting.
Well, make Karen an offer.
Offer her 75, take 150 if you really have to.
Sorry to interrupt. I thought you'd want to sign these
so I can get them in the afternoon mail.
And I called City Hall.
If you've been cohabitating, you won't need a blood test.
You can get married the same day you get the license.
How nice.
Thanks.
As I was saying,
make Karen an offer of 75.
She'll probably take it just to get me out of her hair.
Yes, sir, boss.
Oh, and, uh,
congratulations.
[door opens]
[door shuts]
Excuse me. I'd like to see my daughter,
Mrs. Phineas.
Her husband's a patient here, Tony Phineas.
Or Roberts.
Maybe Chip Roberts.
Oh, yes, here he is.
Chip Roberts. He's just out of surgery.
I believe your daughter's in there with him now.
What room is he in?
I'm sorry, he can only have visitors
from the immediate family. But if you care to wait...
-No, fine, thank you very much. -Mack?
Come on, Karen. No. You're only asking for trouble.
No, I just want to see how she is, that's all.
You know how she is.
If she wants to talk to you, she'll call you.
Mack, look what she's going through.
I just want to help her, that's all.
You think she wants your help?
Then you stick around and find out.
Mack, you don't understand.
You're damn right I don't, but I'm not gonna wait around
have her spit in my face. Not one more time.
Please, Mack.
Mack, please.
[woman on PA] Dr. Hines, outside call.
Why should I plead not guilty?
I did run him over.
Because if you plead guilty to as*ault with a deadly weapon,
they'll put you in jail.
I only did what needed to be done.
Chip is a k*ller.
And he was gonna go free.
Mama, will you listen to yourself?
Now, who appointed you judge and jury?
They weren't gonna send him to a judge and a jury.
-They were gonna let him go. -So?
I only did what needed to be done.
Mrs. Clements, whether or not Chip is a k*ller
is irrelevant to your case.
Right now, you're being charged with attempted m*rder.
If, God forbid, Chip dies,
that charge automatically changes to m*rder.
If you plead guilty to m*rder,
they won't give you a suspended sentence.
A plea of not guilty will give us time to prepare a defense.
We can plead not guilty by reason of temporary insanity.
-I'm not crazy. -Of course you're not, Mama.
Are you gonna let him call your mama crazy?
Why can't I make anybody see?
If I hadn't have done it,
he would have gone free.
Oh.
You can't get through to her.
It's typical of this sort of case.
That's why I said
a psychiatric examination as soon as possible...
Don't talk about me as if I weren't in the room.
I'm not deaf, you know. Any more, and I am crazy.
Mama, would you stop?
Mrs. Clements, why won't you listen to us?
Please, Mama, listen.
He is your lawyer, and he is paid to advise you.
Now, if he tells you to plead not guilty,
then you plead not guilty.
He just wants to help you.
[indistinct chatter]
Val tells me you raised a quarter of her.
Yeah.
Something I've always wanted to do.
Look, I don't think I'm gonna hang around.
Would you tell Val to call me if she needs me?
-Is she okay? -Yeah, she's fine.
-Are they gonna let her out? -Yeah.
I figured out how to raise the bail.
I'm going to call the bail bondsmen,
and I'm gonna put up the house.
-Val, you don't need to do that. -No, Gary, please.
I appreciate your offer.
It means a lot to me, but it's important
that I do this on my own.
But I do thank you for it.
Ben, can you take me back to my car?
-I left it parked at your house. -Of course.
-Do you need money? -No.
Um, I'm gonna call my publisher.
I know that I can get an advance from him.
[instrumental music]
-Olivia, can you keep a secret? -What?
I think Gary's gonna ask me to marry him tonight.
He is? That's great!
And I want tonight to be real special for us.
I know. You want me to sleep over at Sarah's
so you and Gary can...
[chuckles] Hey.
Actually, that's not a bad idea.
And Brian could stay at Henry's.
-Can I be a bridesmaid? -Of course.
You can be a bridesmaid, a flower girl,
a maid of honor, anything you want.
Are you gonna have another baby?
Olivia.
Well, are you?
That's none of your business.
Are you? Yes, yes.
Oh, come on.
-Uh-uh, I got you. -You're gonna have a baby.
-No, no, I'm not. -You're gonna have a baby.
I got you.
You're going in. You're going in.
Mom!
It's great.
Finish it up and get it to my hotel room this evening.
I want to be able to study it
before my breakfast meeting in the morning.
Hello!
Oh, hi.
-Sorry I'm late. -Oh, it's okay.
Well, I wanted to talk to you
about that intractable husband of yours.
You know, this crime commission thing
could be a super deal for him.
He'll have high visibility in the community
plus a chance to get things done.
He'd have to be crazy to turn it down.
That's the problem. Mack is crazy.
Stubborn.
He works harder against fitting in than anybody I know.
He's so afraid of not being the street guy.
He forgets that power not only corrupts,
it also gets things done.
Hey, you don't have to convince me.
I think it's a great idea if Mack took the job,
but Mack needs to make these decisions himself.
What?
-Then I have your support. -Well, all the way.
That's great.
A candidate is only as good as the people supporting him.
-People like you and Mack. -Thank you.
What is with this Ewing character
who wants to donate so much money to my campaign?
Gary? Oh, he's alright. He doesn't mean any harm.
It's only that in his wake,
people lose their jobs, their marriages,
and their lives, and he always feels guilty,
but it's never his fault.
-Sounds like a walking tragedy. -Take the money and run.
Gotcha.
And, uh, what about the woman he's with?
-What's her name? -Abby.
Mrs. Cunningham.
Why?
Well, I think it's important for a candidate
to have some background on the type of person
who wants to support him, that's all.
Well, let me put it to you this way.
If you were stranded in a desert
with no food or water for three days
and you came upon Abby Cunningham
with a picnic basket, keep going.
[laughs]
That's bad.
That bad.
Thanks. I'll keep that under advisement.
[instrumental music]
Oh, what a day.
You want me to fix you something to eat, mama?
Oh, thank you, sweet pea. That'd be nice.
Well, I'm glad I got my appetite back.
Couldn't eat that slop they gave you downtown.
[music continues]
Thank you.
Eileen, it was a wonderful dinner.
[music continues]
My divorce became final today.
[chuckles]
What's the matter? I thought you'd be happy.
I am.
It's just that after all the waiting
and hoping and everything,
I was beginning to think it was never gonna happen.
[instrumental music]
Let's get married.
Let's get married right away. Tomorrow.
We've never really talked about getting married.
Yes, we have.
It's what we both want, isn't it?
I think marriage would spoil things.
You'd become a wife. I'd become a husband.
I like being lovers. No, it works the way it is.
Why fix it?
Gary,
is it the money?
What do you mean?
If it's the money,
I'd be perfectly willing to sign a prenuptial agreement.
-You'd do that? -Of course.
Honey, the money that you inherited
from your father last year is yours.
I don't want any part of it.
If it means something to you,
I'll sign a paper giving up claim to everything.
Gary,
I love you.
I want you.
[instrumental music]
Lilimae.
No, honey, it's me.
Lilimae tried to run you over.
You've just been in surgery.
What?
Is it bad?
The doctor said you're gonna be fine.
They're watching you very closely.
Don't you remember any of it?
I thought we were in Florida
on a bus.
Must have been a dream.
You've just been released from jail.
Lilimae tried to k*ll you.
[chuckles]
Doesn't she know? I'm immortal.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
[keys jingling]
I heal fast.
that's one thing about me I never get sick.
I'll bounce right back.
it's gonna take more than a car to stop me
and then as soon as I'm out of here,
we'll be on our way again.
The house on Sutton place.
Overlooking the river.
Around the corner from the bakery that makes
the best fresh croissants.
And the doorman tips his hat every day
and says "Good morning, Mrs. Roberts.
He'd leave.
And good morning to you, Mr. Roberts
as you go to your fabulous job as a VP
at the top PR firm in New York.
Only until I have my own agency and steal their top clients.
[laughing]
We'll go to all the Broadway first nights.
Have a box at the Opera.
Be known at the best restaurants.
And the trees on the mountain.
Trees?
Weren't there any?
Chip, what are you talking about?
I thought there were trees. Isn't there a garden?
Chip, are you alright?
[indistinct]
Chip.
Are you alright?
Chip, answer me.
[alarm buzzing] Nurse!
Nurse!
Nurse!
Nurse! Please! Somebody come help me.
[knock on door]
Val.
Mack, did my mother come over here?
No, what's the problem?
I don't know. She's gone.
She's left and she's taken the car somewhere.
Oh, God.
I didn't hear her leave, but the bed is empty
and the car's gone.
I was going to call the police, but then I thought maybe I...
No, no, no. Hold it, hold it, hold it.
You don't call the police. She's out on bail.
That'll only jeopardize her case.
Alright, just give me a minute and I'll go with you.
Okay.
-Karen, you okay? -No.
I just can't take it anymore, Mack. I'm sorry.
I just can't take one more thing.
Okay. I'm going to go with Val to help find Lilimae.
-Will you go with us? -No.
Come on.
No.
I'll be right there.
Karen, I'm sorry to wake you up
in the middle of the night like this,
but I just don't have any idea
where she could have gone.
I'm sorry. I just...
I just have nothing left.
Okay.
You always know how to get to me, don't you?
[chuckles]
I think it's the other way around.
[Lilimae] Diana?
Diana, where are you?
Lilimae.
I-I've got to talk to Diana.
She's not here.
Which is her room? I've got to see her.
Lilimae, he just told you she's not here.
But I've got to talk to her.
I've got to explain.
Now, Chip is a k*ller, and I know that she knows.
She's got to tell the police.
Lilimae.
She really isn't here. Let me drive you home.
A secret like that could rot in her heart and destroy her.
Now, I've got to explain to her.
She's got to tell them what she knows.
Gary, what are you doing?
She's in no condition to drive.
She got here by herself. Let her get back by herself.
I'll be with you in a minute, Lilimae.
Gary, you've got to stop jumping
every time these people snap their fingers.
Come on, Lilimae. I'll drive you home.
Gary!
If you go,
I'm not gonna be here when you get back.
[sighs]
[door shuts]
[instrumental music]
How is he?
Diana?
You wanted to break us up any way you could,
and now you think this is going to do it, but it isn't.
I'm going to stand by Chip, whatever happens to him.
So if you've come here to gloat, don't bother.
I'm not here because of Chip.
Honey, I'm here for you.
Chip's in a coma.
They don't know if he's going to live or die.
Oh.
Oh.
You were in the car that hit him.
I know that.
You did it.
-What? -You ran him over.
Diana.
Please, honey.
You know that's not true.
You thought that you could k*ll him
and I would come back to you.
But you didn't k*ll him, and I won't come back.
I'll never trust you or come to you again for anything.
[instrumental music]
[engine revving]
[car doors shut]
I only did what needed to be done.
-She came out to the ranch. -What?
She wanted to talk to Diana
How could you do this to me, mama?
Didn't you know that I would be worried sick?
If Diana would just tell 'em what she knows about Chip,
all our troubles would disappear.
I had to talk to her.
So you just drive off in the middle of the night
without telling anybody where you're going?
You are out on bail don't you understand that?
What is the matter with you, mama?
Are you crazy?
Well, I know that's what some people think.
I don't happen to see it that way.
So you just get up in the middle of the night
with all that's going on and you leave
without a single word.
I thought I was free to come and go in this house
but I see I was mistaken.
Still, if it's all the same to you,
I think I'll head upstairs.
I swear, mama, I don't know what I'm gonna do with you.
Come on, let's go to bed. Gary--
Go ahead and take care of her. I'll wait.
[instrumental music]
Where have you been?
Karen, I was worried about you.
She hates me so...
Karen, it's time to let her go.
I just wanted to help.
She doesn't want your help. You can't help her
if she doesn't want your help.
You can't keep chasing her around forever.
Oh, Mack!
[sobbing]
[instrumental music]
Ah, I like what you've done with the place.
Looks great.
Yeah, that's right. You haven't,
you haven't seen it since I had it remodeled.
No, it's wonderful.
Thanks.
[music continues]
Gary, I'm sorry that you had to get involved in this.
Oh, I think I was already involved.
Valene.
[instrumental music]
Valene.
[crickets chirping]
Abby!
Don't make such a big deal out of this.
Look, Gary.
You're gonna have to make a decision.
between Val and Lilimae or me.
And I'm sure as hell not gonna sit around while you make it.
Damn it, I just drove her home.
Anybody would have done that.
Every time they say jump, you jump.
-I'm not gonna put up with that. -Don't do this.
Look, there comes a time when you have to cut the cord.
It's really too bad you can't do it.
Because I can.
-Where are you going? -What do you care?
Abby, don't play these stupid games!
You're the one playing games, Gary.
And I've had it.
No more ultimatums.
You blew it.
Abby!
[engine cranks]
[tires screeching]
-Morning, Mama. -Mmm.
You're up early.
I was gonna fix you breakfast.
Oh, I'm just having cereal, sweet pea.
-Oh, let me get you some. -Oh, no, no, no, don't bother.
I just want some juice.
Oh, I just feel awful about what I did last night.
I don't know what I could have been thinking of.
I shouldn't have yelled at you like that, huh?
I was just worried.
Mama, don't bother with that, because I'm really not hungry.
I mean, going out to the ranch like that,
I just thought if I could talk to Diana,
if I could just get her to tell what she knows about Chip,
all this heartache would disappear.
Are you making that for me? Because I'm really not hungry.
The worst thing I did was to drag Gary back with me.
Probably have to have the house fumigated.
Mama.
Well, forcing you to talk to the one person
in the world you hate the most.
The only way I could have made it worse
was to bring Abby with me.
Look, would you stop?
I am just glad that you're alright, okay?
Oh, you're sweet not to blame me, sweet pea,
but I just feel awful about what I did.
Not running Chip down, mind you,
but just dragging Gary back into it.
Look, the important thing is that you got home safely.
Now, please, don't worry about it any more.
Well.
[knock on door]
Come in.
Karen.
[sighs]
Are you okay?
Yeah.
I've come to bury the hatchet.
I know we've been through a lot of bad things
the past few weeks,
but we've both been under a lot of pressure,
so I'd like to patch things up between us.
That would be good.
You were probably right about Richard.
I thought he ran off because he k*lled Ciji, but...
He just ran off.
Took me a long time to admit that to myself.
Guess I've been a real pill, huh?
Thank you for saying that.
It really means a lot to me.
Well, I'm not only here to offer you friendship,
I'm here to offer you money.
You know that apartment house that you inherited with Abby?
Well, she wants to buy out your share.
Now, she's authorized me to offer you $75,000,
but as your friend, I want to tell you
that she's willing to go as high as $150,000.
You came here to offer me money from Abby?
Karen, it is a great deal.
You came here to soften me up
so I'd listen to a deal from Abby?
No.
I meant what I said.
I'm sorry. This is obviously not a good time to discuss it.
Right.
But you know, you are in business with her
whether you want to be or not.
If you sell her your share,
you'll never have to think about it again.
Otherwise, you're tied forever.
I don't want to think, hear about, talk about,
or deal with Abby Cunningham for the rest of my life.
And if that's all the regard you have for me,
I don't want to talk to you either.
[dramatic music]
-Mama? -Huh?
Mama, uh, this is Dr. Bovay. Uh, come on in.
Max Eisner thought that maybe the two of you
might have a little talk.
The shrink?
Well, um...
I am a psychiatrist.
That's true.
But I like to think I'm a human being as well.
Well, sit down if you like.
It won't do any good. I'm not crazy.
Good.
Neither am I.
That gives us something in common already.
Um, perhaps you could leave us alone for half an hour or so?
-Half an hour? -Mama, just a few minutes.
Um, I'll just be right next door if you need me, okay?
[door shuts]
[kettle whistling]
[Val] Hello?
-Val? -Yeah?
In the kitchen.
-Hi. -Hi.
-Is Karen home? -Yeah, she's upstairs.
She's not feeling very well.
So I'm making her a pot of tea.
Oh.
I should make her a MacKenzie special
that'll really put her out.
Maybe you better make two.
None of us is really feeling our best today.
Yeah, well, I could k*ll that schlub for causing this.
Mack, why is it when you finally think
that you've got all the pieces together,
something happens and it all falls apart again?
Hey, your mother had a severe stress reaction.
It could happen to any one of us.
I'm not talking about my mother.
Yeah, well, we've all been under a lot of strain lately.
I'm talking about Gary.
Oh, I'm so furious with myself.
Just one look from him, one touch,
and it's like I never learned anything.
Gary, Gary, when did this happen?
Oh, it happened last night.
He brought my mother home,
and we talked, and he stayed.
Well...
[clears throat]
How do you feel?
I feel like...
Hey, that's none of my business. I'll be right back.
That's something personal between you and Gary.
Val, look at me.
How do you feel?
I feel...
Okay, I'll be right back.
Okay.
[Gary] I was 15 when I met her.
When she smiles or turns her head a certain way,
I-I get a glimpse of exactly the way she used to be.
You know, I don't believe I'm hearing you say these things.
I know, I know. It's crazy after all that's happened.
After all that's happened, after all we've lived through,
seeing you devour one another.
Yeah, I know, I know. It's been a nightmare for everybody.
But not all of it.
I mean, there were some good times, too. A lot of it.
Yeah, well, you had some good times drinking,
but I don't think you'd go for a cold beer on a hot day.
Laura, it's not the same thing.
You know, I've known Richard a long time, too,
but that doesn't mean if he came back,
I'd want to stay up half the night talking with him.
You don't understand.
It's different with Val and me.
How?
Because when you've been through as much together
as Val and I have,
you can't play games with each other.
Val and I can't lie to each other.
We've seen the worst of each other.
That's what we were so great about last night.
We could deal with each other with no illusions,
no fun, no tricks.
And I think I really need that in my life right now.
Well, how does Val feel about this?
I think she feels the same way I do.
It felt so damn good just to be together
without tearing each other's guts out.
It felt so right just to get beyond the anger
and the pain and be friends again.
[instrumental music]
There's still plenty of time.
Don't worry.
He'll come back. I promise you.
I know him like a book.
I hope for both our sakes you're right.
You picked a very strange time to walk out on him.
I know, but I'll tell you something.
When he goes around Val, I see red.
Besides, if it comes to a choice between Valine Ewing and me,
he's going to choose me.
But just in case,
isn't there any way we can get around all this?
I told you. Community property is only...
I don't mean community property. I know about all that.
But wouldn't his inheritance
go into Gary Ewing Enterprises anyway?
Wouldn't that money be available for our use?
It'll go in if he puts it in. It won't if he doesn't.
And it's entirely up to him.
Well, he'll be back.
I know he will.
Okay. See you soon.
