Good morning.

Brought you some toast and some juice.

[Gary groans]

Or, maybe just some coffee?

[sighs]

I've got to get out of here.

[Ciji] What can I do to help you?

Nothing.

How long have I been here?

- You don't remember? - How long?

Oh, you got to here about 2 o'clock in the morning.

You had some complicated theory about power and money

and you wanted to tell somebody before you forgot.

You weren't making much sense. I didn't think you should drive.

Thanks.

Well, you really don't remember, do you?

Hey, what's going on with you, Gare?

I'm a drunk.

Did you read the excerpts from Val's book?

Oh, yeah, but..

You, uh..

You got anything for this?

Mm-mm.

I get mean Ciji.

I'll take a look.

[groans]

[sighs]

[juice trickling]

Here.

Well, I've never seen you like this before.

Yeah, well, it's just the real me.

I thought you were sober.

[slurps]

[sighs]

I was.

I was a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

What went wrong?

[slurps]

[sighs]

They, uh..

...tell you you got to go to meetings.

I thought they meant the other guys.

Guess they were right.

You shouldn't be here, Gary.

You got a lady at home

that's probably worried sick about you.

Which lady? Which home?

Come on, let's get you out of here.

Oh, you must mean Abby. Well..

Okay, I'll go back to Abby.

And I'll go back to AA.

- Come on. - AA.

- Come on. - AA.

Easy, easy. Jesus.

I'm sorry, I must say I expected more of you.

But, Mr. Thornwell, you don't understand what it did to Valene

to see her book in that scandal sheet.

She's been a mess ever since.

That was your job, Chip.

You were supposed to explain that Thornwell and associates

could protect her against such publicity.

You didn't exactly make it easy for me.

Nobody ever said this was an easy business.

You don't know how Val feels about Gary.

Seeing what she wrote about him in print

especially, now that he's drinking, she hated that.

- Is he drinking? - 'Yes.'

I'm sorry, I thought you would have made a good partner.

Wait a minute now.

I can still bring in Valene Ewing as a client.

You had your chance, Chip.

I thought I could add Valene Ewing to my list of clients.

I can't do that now. Now, if I can't count on you..

Well, you understand.

Hey, you'll have Valene Ewing as a client by the end of the week.

I don't think you understand. It's over.

By the end of the week, you'll see. I can deliver.

Your faith in me will be justified.

What faith?

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some work to do.

I wouldn't bother.

I thought Gary would be here.

We're going to need a signature on all of this.

I know, I'll, uh..

I'll show them to him later. It's no problem.

The stipulation you asked me for

regarding acquisitions is attached in the rider.

Uh, rider B, I believe.

Mm-hmm. Yeah, it is.

Now, this will cover any subsidiary companies

that might be formed by Gary Ewing Enterprises.

- 'Is that right?' - Yes.

Although, you may want to work out

a different structure depending on the subsidiary.

Uh, may I ask you something?

Sure.

You are aware of when Gary's divorce becomes final.

In about nine months.

Your best protection is to marry the guy.

The thought had crossed my mind.

You are a full and equal partner in Gary Ewing Enterprises.

But given the community property laws in this state

well, marriage is the safest contract.

Gary.

Am I interrupting?

[lawyer] 'Uh, not at all. We were expecting you.'

Sorry I was delayed.

We were just, uh, going over these contracts again.

I'd like you to take a look at them. We both have to sign them.

You sure you wanna do that?

I mean, there might be something in there I shouldn't know about.

Oh, don't be silly, honey. We're doing this together.

Ah, yes. How can I forget.

The wheels of business just keep right on turning, don't they?

Somebody has to buy the booze.

You're right about that.

I think I'll be on my way.

Something I said?

Look, I'll call you in a couple of days, alright?

- Okay, fine. Take care. - Bye-bye.

Hey, look, uh. I'm sorry.

I don't know what happened last night.

I went over to Ciji's and I must have passed out.

'Hoping it won't happen again.'

Forget it.

No, no, no, I was out all night. I think you've got a right to..

I don't wanna know. I don't want explanations or apologies.

If you wanna stay out all night, that's fine.

Just remember..

...the same rules apply to me.

Hey, I'm not talking about playing some stupid game.

Gary, do you want to be punished? Is that it?

Well, go find someone else. I'm not in the mood.

I keep telling you, I'm not like Val.

I'm not gonna count your drinks or hide your bottles

or run around town checking up on you.

If you wanna k*ll yourself, fine.

Just don't expect me to watch.

[instrumental music]

When do you start your new job?

Very soon.

Very soon.

They're fixing up my office now.

They've ordered some furniture, but it hasn't arrived yet.

I wish you could have known my dad.

He really would have liked you.

Your dad? Huh..

Your dad would have seen the way I look at you

and he would have come after me with a shotgun.

I guess we won't be able to see each other too much

you know, after you start at Thornwell's.

Oh, no, no, they're still haggling

over some contractual details

so you'll have me for a little while longer.

But there is one thing you could do for me.

What?

Well, the truth is

I sort of promised my new boss

that I would bring Valene along as a client.

Not that there'll be any problem, of course.

I mean, she trusts me implicitly

ever since I turned Capricorn crude into a best seller.

But since Gary started drinking

nobody can talk to Val.

I mean, I can't get through to her.

Well, she's still upset about

seeing their chapters published in the newspaper.

I know, I know and in some crazy way

I think she blames me for it.

Anyway, I just thought maybe you could talk to her.

But why would she listen to me?

Sweetheart

you and I are the golden couple.

Everybody who knows us wants to be part of us.

Valene is just the beginning.

You know I'm crazy about you, don't you?

Yeah.

Sure.

[instrumental music]

You just can't--

Don't hold yourself responsible.

He did not start drinking until those pages--

He didn't start drinking until he got involved

with Ciji either. Why don't you hold her responsible?

Okay. That's it.

- More stuff? - Nope.

Gary is the only one who's responsible.

Nobody poured liquor down his throat.

In fact, I'm surprised he didn't start drinking sooner.

Abby'd drive anyone to drink.

That sounds like something my mama would say.

Well, your mama was right.

Now, you're both in here passing judgment on a guy

who's obviously in a lot of pain.

Mack, do me a favor, will you? Stay out of this.

You don't know him. Not the way I do.

You're right and that allows me to be a little more objective.

I only know what I see.

You don't know what you're talking about.

That man hurt everybody who tried to help him.

He did it to Sid, he did it to me

and I'm not gonna stand here while he does it to Val.

Wait a minute, wait a minute, Mack.

- What do you see? - Oh, my God.

I see a man in a lot of trouble ready to fall on his face

and people standing around ready to kick him.

That is not fair.

Would you both please let..

Look, this isn't getting us anywhere.

Let's just, let's talk about something else, okay?

Please.

Yeah.

You know what, I'm gonna order Daniels tonight.

I'd love to see Richard when his face gets all

white and he starts frothing at the mouth.

I'm gonna order hot dogs and beans a la Danny.

[chuckles softly]

Okay.

My underwear.

- If it comes up, that's all. - How will it come up?

Val will be here tonight with Munson.

All you have to do is mention a few words.

How effective I've been as a publicist.

- Are you already her publicist? - Not exactly.

If I don't bring Val to Thornwell

this job may go down the drain for me.

No, I don't understand you.

You've told-you told me that you already have the job.

I will have it if you help me.

You wanna use me

to convince Val to let you use her?

Uh-uh. This is where I get off.

Ciji, Just a few words. It'll help the both of us.

[sighs]

Okay, fine. I'll help you.

You wanna know how?

I'll help you clear the deck all together.

You not only don't have the job with Thornwell

but you don't have me as a client anymore.

- Ciji. - 'In fact, you know what else?'

I'll let you off the hook with the baby too.

You don't have to worry about it anymore.

If worry was ever the right word.

Wait a minute. Wait a minute. What do you mean? Did you have--

No, I'm having the baby.

I'm just-I'm just gonna have it alone.

You don't have to feel responsible anymore.

Well, I've got news for you, honey.

We have got a contract.

I've earned my 25%.

I put you here, showcase at the--

Wait a minute. Wait a minute.

Gary found me and Kenny picked all..

I signed you with the biggest record company in the country.

You didn't do any of those things.

We have a contract.

Please, why don't you just take me to court?

Let go of me.

- I won't let you do this. - You're hurting me.

I'm telling you not to do this.

I'm not gonna let you use me anymore.

[dramatic music]

[door shuts]

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

Gary, is that you?

Yeah. Hi, Mike.

I haven't seen you for ages. How you been?

Great.

- You okay? - Yeah, fine.

Well, we haven't seen you for such a long time.

You've been going to the meetings?

What, are you checking up on me?

- No. - I'm here now, aren't I?

Sure.

- Yeah. It's great to see you. - Yeah, you too.

- You coming in? - In a minute.

Go on. I'll, uh, see you inside.

Gary, are you sure--

Hey, I said I was okay, didn't I?

Go on. I'll-I'll see you inside.

[somber music]

Tonight's specialty is California squab

on duck liver paté with red raspberry.

- I'll have that. - You know what I want?

A nice big chunk of red meat.

- You have that? - Mack, not a restaurant--

Beef tenderloin with green peppercorn sauce, a wise choice.

- You're on, - Young lady.

Oh, nothing for me. Thanks. I'm just saying hello.

And you, madam?

- Uh, I'll have a specialty too. - Make that two.

Ciji. Ciji. Have you seen Ciji?

'Ciji!'

[Gary chuckles]

Ci..

[laughs]

Ciji, I got to talk. Come here.

[Gary laughing]

[footsteps approaching]

What have you got on?

Gary, I thought you were going to AA.

Oh, I was, I was, but they don't want you to drink there.

Let's-let's get you some coffee, alright?

I don't want any coffee.

[dramatic music]

Val.

[Ciji] Gary! Come here. Gary!

Someone better go after him. He's gonna k*ll somebody.

You can't stop him.

There's nothing that anybody can do for him.

You okay?

Yeah, I'm fine.

[intense music]

[door opens]

Ciji, Ciji, the guy is a drunk.

Why do you care what happens to him?

Because he came to me.

So what? You've got to sing tonight.

There are more Important things than singing.

Munson's gonna be here tonight. You've got a job to do.

You just can't go chasing after every

drunk that comes crying for you.

Why don't you get out of here, please?

You have nothing to do with me anymore.

Ciji, I still know what's best for you.

You only know what's best for you.

[Chip] 'Ciji.'

Oh, Laura.

- I'm so glad you're here. - What is it?

[Ciji] 'Oh, Gary came in and he was drunk'

and-and he saw Val and he went storming out

and I'm really worried about him.

Oh, come on, it's gonna be okay.

I don't know, you should have seen his face.

He really looked terrible.

You're gonna make yourself crazy chasing after him.

It won't do any good anyway.

That's what I've been trying to tell her.

Look, you just go out there and perform tonight

and get your mind off of it.

I don't know.

We've all been through this with Gary before.

The only way anyone can help him

is if he wants to help himself.

I just feel so bad for him.

Would you mind leaving, please?

I'd like to be alone with Laura.

Oh, yeah. Sure.

I brought you this for luck.

Oh, thanks.

Look, it's gonna be okay.

Oh, I don't know, you should have seen him.

[instrumental music]

Hey, is Ciji singing that new song tonight?

Why don't you ask your wife?

Goodnight.

[door opens]

[Mack] I should have stopped him. Grabbed his keys or something.

[door shuts]

- I know. - Yeah.

Val's right.

There's nothing anyone could do.

Maybe. You go on upstairs, I'm gonna make a couple of calls.

Don't stay down long.

Alright.

- Promise? - Promise.

Good.

[dialing]

Abby. Hi, Pat Mackenzie. Sorry to bother you.

Mack.

Listen, Gary left Daniel a couple of hours ago.

He's pretty wiped out in bad shape.

I was thinking if you know of any of his hangouts, you might--

Mac, it's really nice of you to call

but Gary got home about a half an hour ago.

He's in bed asleep now.

Oh, good.

Okay. Well, then, sorry to bother you.

Oh. It's alright, I appreciate it.

Bye-bye.

You're welcome. Goodnight.

[suspenseful music]

You and Ciji have gotten pretty close, haven't you?

- I suppose. - What's she like?

I mean, I don't really feel I know her.

You know her as well as I do.

Hm. Where's she from?

[Laura] 'Kentucky.'

She's young, isn't she?

[Laura] 'Twenty-six, but she left home at fifteen.'

How come?

[Laura] 'Just didn't get along with her family.'

Oh, yeah?

Well, I guess, uh, must be pretty rough on her.

Probably explains why she's looking for a mother figure.

What?

Well, it makes sense, doesn't it?

I mean, with her family history

I mean, that she'd be

looking for a close friendship with another woman

to you know, replace the love

that she probably never got from her own mother.

What are you talking about?

I'm just trying to figure out

your relationship with her, that's all.

There's nothing to figure out. We're friends.

What'd you two talk about?

I don't know, what is this?

I'm just curious, that's all.

I mean, you spent so much time together.

You really don't have that much in common.

I mean, what do you two find to talk about all day long?

Lipstick and white sails.

[kisses] Goodnight.

[suspenseful music]

[sighs]

[hangs up]

[music continues]

[door shuts]

Mommy.

Olivia.

What's the matter, honey?

I can't sleep. I had a bad dream.

Oh, come on.

Come here.

Oh, honey, it was just a dream.

Don't worry.

I dreamt that I was in a strange city.

I couldn't find anybody that I knew.

And then when I could find somebody

like you or Daddy or Gary

they would disappear.

- I was all alone. - Oh, honey.

Come on, don't you see what a silly dream that was?

You're here at home.

I'm here. You're not alone.

Where's Gary?

He has to stay out late tonight.

Did you and Gary have a fight?

No.

No, he just had some business to do.

Sometimes I get so scared

that you and Gary will get a divorce.

Just like you and daddy did.

Divorce honey, we're not even married yet.

Well, I know, but..

Well, you know what I mean.

That Gary will go away

and we'll never be able to see him anymore.

That's not gonna happen.

And don't you ever worry about being alone.

That's not gonna happen as long as I'm here.

I'm not going anywhere.

[soft music]

Tell you what.

You gets a special treat

'cause Gary's gonna be out so late tonight.

Why don't you come and snuggle in here with me?

- Okay? - Okay.

Tell me a story.

- Make it a happy one, though. - Okay.

That way we'll both have nice dreams.

Once upon a time

there was a big, big department store

and they were having a sale on wishes.

And for $1.95, you could have three wishes.

And anything you wanted you could have.

Like, if you wanted a horse, you could have a horse.

And if you wanted a house, you could have a house.

[knocks] Morning.

- God, you scared me. - Oh, sorry.

I-I heard you get up, and I wanted to talk to you.

Chip, I can't talk now, I'm going running.

- Well, maybe when you get back? - No.

It's important, I mean, I know you don't wanna deal with

publicity or anything like that

right now but this guy Thornwell is really great.

Chip, you're right. I do not want to deal with it.

Well, he's leaving town at the end of this week

and I really think you ought to see him.

Val, this guy has got some great ideas for you.

So what?

Well, so can I tell him that you agree to see him?

Can I tell him that? Val?

Chip, how stupid do you think I am?

[instrumental music]

[dramatic music]

[engine revving]

Gary.

- Gary. - Mm.

Come on.

Let's go home.

[Gary sighs]

[seagulls squawking]

[waves crashing]

[panting]

- You get wet? - Oh, no.

[Gary panting]

Just what I needed.

Good workout, vitamins, nutrition.

Yeah, right.

Why don't you work on not freezing to death first of all?

Yeah, I let myself get too run down.

Maybe I'll try swimming.

I mean, hell, we only live ten feet from the ocean

and we never use it. What do you think?

Good brisk swim every morning, huh?

Great idea. Just don't expect me to go along.

No. Although, uh..

[chuckles] You could use a little exercise.

- Oh, yeah? - Yeah.

Well, watch this.

[both laughing]

[instrumental music]

[Gary grunts]

[both panting]

Oh, Abby.

I can beat it.

- I know I can. - I know.

I know you will.

[knocking on door]

Who is it?

[Richard] 'Uh, Richard.'

Hi, Richard.

- Hi. Can I come in? - Sure.

Yeah, you left this, uh, at the restaurant.

- I thought you might need it. - Oh, well, um..

Actually, I left it there on purpose but thanks anyway.

Oh, I, I should have asked Laura.

I mean, now that you two have gotten so..

...chummy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm, I'm

I'm all for friendships between women.

Really.

I mean, I know there are things

that Laura can discuss with you

that she just never could discuss with me.

Uh, yeah, I guess so.

Like what?

What do you mean, like what?

Well, I mean

what are some of the things that

that Laura can discuss with you that she can't discuss with me?

Well, if she could discuss them with you

she'd discuss them with you. Why ask me?

You two don't have any

deep, dark secrets, do you?

[chuckles] No.

What are you getting at?

Well, when men get together

they talk about, uh

politics and sports and women.

And when women get together, what do they talk about?

Children, diapers, feelings

lipstick, white sails, men, what?

Richard, what do you want?

I'm on the outside looking in here

and no-nobody would just tell me what's going on.

What do you mean, going on?

[instrumental music]

I'll see you tonight.

There's just one thing I'd like to know before I go.

What's that?

Which one gets to be the man?

[door shuts]

But he's such a whiz.

I mean, take Ciji for example.

He just automatically sets up the right person

at the right event, at the right moment.

Diana, look, I appreciate your enthusiasm

but I-I just can't think about publicists right now.

But that's my point.

You should let Chip do all the

thinking for you.

Look, Diana, I know that you think

he's very talented, but--

But Val doesn't wanna think about it right now.

'Anyway, it seems to me that'

Chip is a pretty good hustler on his own.

He doesn't need you to do his hustling for him.

Mom, you sound more like Mack every day.

Diana.

Would it help for me to say that I will think about it?

Fine. That's all I want.

Well, goodbye.

Bye.

[door closes]

Well, I see the handwriting on the wall with those two

and I'm sorry, I just don't like it.

Karen, did anybody hear anything? Do you know?

Did he get home alright?

Yeah, he got home and he passed out.

Mack talked to Abby.

Oh, boy. This is real hard for you, isn't it?

No, no, no, it's not hard for me because I'm angry!

I mean, I'm angry that he-that he's still doing these

same things to himself and to everybody else around him.

And I'm gonna tell you something else. I intend to stay angry.

I am holding on to that because if I don't

I'm gonna start to care again

and then I'm gonna be right back where I started.

Don't, please don't-don't say anything.

Don't do anything.

I love you very much, but I just..

I want to be by myself right now.

I wanna-I wanna get back to my work, okay?

Okay.

Oh. Richard's making something real special in the kitchen.

He wants you to taste it.

He says it's delicious.

And he specifically asked for you to taste it.

Me?

Yeah.

I love musicians.

[chuckles softly]

Listen, Ciji about you and Gary--

- Oh, Abby, look-- - Hey, wait wait, wait.

Don't get upset.

I know the rumors about you and he aren't true.

You're much too smart to get involved

in something so dangerous, so close to home.

Your career is much too important to you for that.

And you know how quickly I'd react.

Quickly and...creatively.

You sound like God.

Hello.

Hi, it's Susie Walters.

You probably don't remember me. I'm a reporter for the Gazette.

Yes.

I'm working the police station

and I just thought I'd let you know

they brought your ex-husband in for drunk and disorderly.

'Boy, he's really a mess.'

'You were right to get rid of him.'

'It's just awful what a man can do to himself.'

Anyway, would you like to make a statement?

No, I would not.

[hangs up]

[instrumental music]

Gary Ewing's been arrested under Penal Code 240, as*ault.

You'll be released to Mrs. Cunningham.

What does that mean?

It means don't go out and get drunk again first thing.

Let me see your wrist.

You wanna take care of that this morning?

You know you're damn lucky to have someone come

and bail you out in the middle of the night.

This is to release the car.

Arraignment will be held in Municipal court.

'There will be a hearing in about ten days.'

'Now, everything you need to know is on this card.'

'If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.'

Val.

I'll take care of him now.

I see how well you take care of him.

[Abby] 'You don't blame what's happening to him on me?'

With every fiber of my body.

When I look at Gary and see what he's become, I blame you.

Whatever failings he may have had, at least he was strong.

He was healthy, and he knew who he was--

And he left you.

Maybe because I couldn't give him the excitement

he found in you.

But I loved him.

With all my heart and soul, I loved him and I cared for him.

And I never did one thing to hurt him.

But still he left you.

[Val] 'Just like he's leaving you now to go to somebody else.'

Honey, I don't have it.

I think I saw you give it to Chip.

Yeah? Alright.

- I'll see you later. - Later.

[piano music in the distance]

[suitcase unlocks]

[suspenseful music]

- Excuse me. - Oh, hi.

- Is Chip around? - Uh, no. He's not.

Can I give him a message for you?

Well, it's kind of personal.

Well, why don't you just tell him

that I think I've got Valene interested.

- He'll understand. - Okay, I'll tell him.

I know he's been concerned about it.

He's got nothing to worry about anymore.

He's got me now.

[music continues]

Well, goodbye.

[sighs]

[soft dramatic music]

[groans]

I can't run the risk of Gary going off on these binges

and ruining everything.

I've got to find a way to protect myself.

[lawyer] 'I don't know what you could do.'

'Hide the keys to the car. Not keep liquor in the house.'

[Abby] 'No. I'm not talking about something like that.'

I'm talking about maybe..

...inserting a clause in the contract that states that

if either partner suffers diminished capacity

because of mental illness or alcoholism

'then power of attorney reverts to the other partner.'

'Could you do something like that?'

[lawyer] 'I suppose so.'

'I'm not sure of how I would word it though.'

[Abby] 'I can't have Gary going off on these'

'drunken sprees and spending all the money.'

I've worked too hard to get us where we are.

I'm not gonna see it go to waste now.

Yeah, I could insert a clause like you're talking about

but both partners would have to agree to it and sign it.

Well, I can get him to sign it. That's no problem.

[instrumental music]

The point is, Gary is in no position to make

intelligent business decisions for himself right now.

'And I have to do everything I can to protect my investment.'

You what?

I-I-I just can't explain it. I'm...

I just had to go.

What about everything you told me

about being strong, about keeping away?

I-I know that, it's just..

I had the feeling something awful was gonna happen.

Jeff, go easy on her, okay? She had a hard night.

Honey.

You just acted on human impulse, you know?

I mean, you have nothing to be ashamed about.

Val, I wanna help.

I mean, in any way I can.

It's-its's just, it's a part of my life that I..

I-I just want to offer whatever I can.

[crying] I just..

Wait a minute.

[door shuts]

I know where she's going. Let me go.

Wait a minute.

Come on, I'll drive you.

[door shuts]

[door opens]

Oh. I thought you'd be at Daniel.

I came home.

I see that.

Well, don't worry, I'm not looking for company.

I just came to grab some things I left.

Fine, Tony.

Chip Roberts, you must think we're all so stupid.

I don't know what you're talking about.

This is Ciji. You can't lie to me.

Where'd you get this?

You've been snooping through my things.

I was looking for some music

and I found it in your briefcase.

If you weren't so much in love with yourself

you wouldn't be carrying it with you all the time.

This isn't true.

This really isn't true.

This story. I mean, it's true.

I'm wanted for this, but I haven't really hurt her.

It's just some rich old lady so used to getting

everything she wants that when I left her

she made up some crazy story about me.

'Do you know what it's like to start over?'

You know how hard it is to start over? Really start over.

I mean, new name, new city, new history.

I thought I finally outran this.

No, here it is again. Screwing everything up. Screwing us up.

No, it didn't screw us up.

We were screwed up before I knew anything about it.

How do you think Diana Fairgate's gonna feel, hm?

- What do you mean? - She's in love with you.

Is she in love with Chip or Tony?

That guy doesn't exist anymore.

I've been thinking.

Maybe we ought to have this baby, huh?

I mean, maybe your outlook on life is better than mine.

We could work together, we could travel, we could raise this kid.

[chuckles] You're incredible, you know.

I can't believe you think I'd still wanna be with you.

What do you mean?

I wouldn't let you near my baby.

Someone should tell everybody about you. I should be the one.

I should tell Diana Fairgate and everybody else you've conned.

Shut up.

[dramatic music]

Telling anybody anything would be very stupid.

[sighs]

[sighs]

[instrumental music]

[panting]

What do you call that? Running off steam, huh?

[panting] Yeah.

[seagulls squawking]

Well, how come you're still steamed up?

I don't know.

[waves crashing]

Circumstances beyond my control.

Yeah?

Well, you'll have to do a little better than that

to let it all out. Get rid of it.

Like what?

I don't know.

Shadow boxing.

Come on. Huh?

Go a couple of rounds. Come on.

Deep breathing.

[exhales] Ah, fresh air.

Screaming!

Huh? Hey!

Let it out! Come on!

Hey!

Come on. Hey!

- Hey! - I don't want help!

That's it!

Hey.

Karen's down there by your car.

She dropped me off at this end..

...to head you off.

Well, I'm okay.

- Yeah, sure you are. - 'No, I am.'

I know Karen thinks I'm lying when I say that

but I'm not, I am okay.

You believe that?

Hey, what do I know? I'm the new kid on the block.

No, tell me the truth.

[Mack] 'Only you can answer that, Val.'

But if you like my opinion

I think you're still in love with this guy, Gary Ewing.

And you probably always will be.

Well, how can I be in love with a guy that left me and..

...still be okay?

You know, I always wanted to be a Wall Street lawyer.

I worked very hard at becoming that.

It was hard to admit I didn't belong up there

on the 60th floor with all the vests and the wingtips.

I belonged down on the street with the creeps and the schlubs.

But I loved it. I loved having that job.

I loved the fact that I had gotten it.

It wasn't easy to give it up.

Gary's a little more to me than, than..

...some kind of job I gave up.

Is he?

- He's.. - He's what? Huh?

- An obsession? - No.

No, he..

[dramatic music]

...he's a weakness.

He is to me..

...what alcohol is to him.

I don't know why we all find it so appalling in him

and not so in me.

'You know, we're the same, Gary and me.'

I-I wrote this big bestseller

I-I-I changed my whole life.

I think I've finally grown up.

But still same.

[music continues]

[scoffs]

Might as well put my hair back in braids

for all the changing I've done.

Hey!

Hi.

'You guys okay?'

[seagulls squawking]

[music continues]

[Val] I'm fine.

[Val crying] I'm fine.

[theme music]
