Oh, do you think she's mad?

I don't know, she's been acting funny all morning.

Yeah, but she said it was okay.

[Eric] 'Well, I know that's what she said'

'but I don't know if that's how she feels.'

How she feels about what?

Hey, what is this, a conspiracy?

Well, we can't tell if you're upset

about us going to the game with Mack.

- 'We-we already..' - Why should I be upset?

Because I broke up with him?

Look, just because Mack and I aren't seeing each other anymore

doesn't mean that you and he can't see each other.

I'm going, mother.

- Did I say anything? - You didn't have to.

I already know how you feel about this weekend.

I only said I didn't think it was a good idea

because you're not feeling well.

That's not the reason, and you know it.

You just don't want me to go because you hate Abby.

I don't hate Abby. I just don't trust her.

[doorbell rings]

That's for you.

[birds chirping]

Hi. Hi, Diana.

Guys, how you doing?

- Alright. - Hi.

- Hi. - Hi.

- How you been? - I'm good.

[chuckles]

Um..

...I wanted to return this to you.

- What? - Yeah.

It's-it's the sweater you lent me

that-that weekend we went away.

- Well, I want you-- - It's cuter on you anyway.

[chuckles]

[instrumental music]

- Well.. - Uh, what do you say, guys?

- Ready? Let's go. - Oh, yeah.

- Yeah. - Yeah.

- Goodbye. - Goodbye.

- 'See you, mom.' - Okay.

Goodbye.

- 'Mack..' - Yeah.

Alright. Take care. Goodbye.

Courage, mom.

I'm gonna go say goodbye to Chip.

[music continues]

Are you gonna be okay?

Whoa! Whoa! Space girl into orbit. Ya-wee.

You wanna go for a fly? Come on, come on.

Space girl down and sound to mission control.

[baby cooing]

- Hey, Kenny. - Oh, here comes mama.

Can you do me a favor and take this with you today?

Yeah. What is it?

It's a song I've been working on.

[birds chirping]

And the co-writer is the father in Erin Molly's playgroup.

He's really good.

He and I've been working on the material together.

- Are you kidding? - Mm-hmm.

You and Gary discovered Ciji.

I felt why can't I discover somebody?

- Ha. - Ha!

Besides, if it's really good, I'll cut the demo.

Um, yeah, hon, listen, uh, I'll take it with me

and I'll give it a look.

[engine whirring]

[birds chirping]

Hi.

So the millionaires are gonna run off

and play for the weekend

leaving us poor peasants home to till the soil, huh?

[laughs] You love it and you know it.

Yeah, I talked to Mike, he said he finished the charts

for that new tune you like.

- Yeah? - Yeah.

Ciji and I are gonna work on it all weekend.

Oh, terrific.

It's good to know we're leaving everything

in such capable hands.

Hey, we're gonna have at least, what, three new songs

worked up for you by the time you get back.

Three?

No, darling, now come to think of it

I haven't seen him all morning.

Is there any message that you want me to give him?

Well, just tell him I stopped by to say goodbye before I left.

Okay, darling, will do.

Do you have any idea where he might be?

[birds chirping]

[Lilimae] 'Building careers'

'and making things happen if I know our Chip.'

Just tell him I said goodbye, okay?

I will, Di, and you have a good time.

- Bye. - Bye, sweet pea.

I didn't hear Chip get up this morning, did you?

No, mama, I didn't.

Well, that boy knows

the early bird catches the worm.

[indistinct chatter]

And speaking of worms.

[instrumental music]

I'm worried about Diana.

I think she might be getting sick.

She never got over the sore throat.

Karen, stop being the overprotective mother.

Just let the kid have a good time.

If she's feeling run down

a weekend in the country will do her good.

We'll keep an eye on her.

See that she doesn't wear herself out.

- Okay? - Yeah.

I'm gonna be fine, mother. Now stop worrying, okay?

- Okay. - Bye-bye.

- Have fun. - I will.

[music continues]

- Hi. - Hi.

- You look cute. - Oh, thank you.

[engine starts]

[engine whirring]

Oh.

[groans]

Oh!

[exhales]

I missed you so much this week.

Mmm.

I told you, I got you that interview.

Did that take every night this week?

Honey, you know what publicity is like.

You knock on twenty doors before one of them opens.

You know I'm doing this for you.

Well, you think you can kiss your way out of anything, right?

[chuckling]

Mmm, can't I?

[chuckles]

[groans]

Chip?

I'm real confused about us.

When you're here, everything's wonderful.

You're so loving.

And then when we go out in public, y-you're so cold.

It's like you don't want anyone to know we're together.

That's right, I don't. And you don't either.

[Chip] 'If people found out about us'

'it would destroy our credibility.'

Anyway, how could I promote you properly

if everybody knows I'm crazy about you?

I don't see what difference it makes.

It makes a big difference, believe me.

The worst thing that can happen to you career

is for people to find out about us.

[instrumental music]

Anyway..

...I've canceled all my appointments..

...for the weekend.

I plan on doing nothing but keeping the star happy.

By this time Monday morning

you won't have a complaint in the world.

[music continues]

[Karen] 'Are you okay?'

Yeah. I'm fine. Why shouldn't I be?

Mata Hari's return.

- Really? Are you alright? - Karen, I'm fine, okay?

Let me know.

Well, I'm glad one of us is.

- Mm. What is that? Fudge? - Yeah.

Mama made it. Why? You want a piece?

Mm. No. Thank you.

You know, I'm still not seeing Mack.

You're not?

No, that's for the best, though.

I mean, we were at the point where..

...where we have to get married or break it up.

You know what I mean?

Yeah. You mean you don't want to marry?

Well, it's not right for me.

[scoffs] I have to give Diana a credit for that.

I mean, she saw through him before I ever did.

[sighs] I guess I was taken by our chemistry.

Mm.

Sure do miss him, though.

I can tell.

I really admire you.

- Me? - Yeah.

Why?

The way you pulled through.

[instrumental music]

- I didn't have a choice. - 'Sure, you did.'

[Karen] 'Some women would have held on to their resentment for years.'

Well, I got more important things to do.

Yeah, you do.

[chuckles] We do.

Thanks. I love this game.

I play it whenever I'm up here.

Say, that singer of yours is fantastic.

I'm glad you invited me to hear her.

Coming from you, that's quite a compliment.

The question remains. Why did you invite me to hear her?

[birds chirping]

You know more about the music business

than almost anybody around.

[Abby] 'I figured we had a lot to learn from you.'

We're competitors.

Unless you think I'd buy Ciji's contract.

[chuckles] That's one possibility.

- There might be others. - Such as?

Work with us. Record Ciji with us as co-partners.

I don't work well with partners. I need full control myself.

Well, that might be arranged too.

What about your partners? Kenny Ward, for example.

[Jeff] 'Right now he's your producer.'

If I worked with you

I'd want to put in my own producer.

Let me tell you something.

If you wanted to work with us

I wouldn't let Kenny stand in the way.

You've already given this considerable thought

haven't you?

[chuckles]

Gary.

I didn't expect you back so soon.

I thought you two went riding.

Yeah, we did. We came back early.

Uh, Diana's not feeling too well.

Really?

Honey, what's the matter? Are you alright?

I'm gonna go rest a while.

- See you later, okay? - Okay.

- You up for the weekend? - Oh, I have a house up here.

I try to get up for some polo.

We were just talking about Ciji.

[Dr. Rosen] 'Mrs. Fairgate?'

This is Doctor Ellen Gilbert.

She's a nephrologist, a kidney specialist.

We thought it best to ask her to come down.

Unfortunately, things are much worse than we thought.

Your daughter is in critical condition.

Her blood pressure is extremely elevated

and her potassium is very high.

She's showing signs of early heart failure

and her kidney function tests are very abnormal.

She's in what we call renal failure.

I..

I don't understand.

Her kidneys have stopped working.

She's going to need an immediate dialysis

to flush the poisons out of her system.

But she was. You see, she was fine this morning.

No. Not really.

Sometimes these things develop slowly

and patients may not seem to be all that sick.

Kids have a tendency to run themselves into the ground

without letting anyone know how they feel.

With your permission, I'd like to call in a vascular surgeon

to put a shunt in her arm.

A shunt?

It's a device that enables us

to connect her veins and arteries

to a machine so we can cleanse her blood.

Mrs. Fairgate, I know this is a lot to handle.

But the initial dialysis will do a lot

to reduce the uremia and get her out of immediate danger.

I've ordered a complete series of tests.

The potassium is still high. Her blood pressure is high.

Just now..

Just now she tried to disconnect the machine.

[sobbing] My little girl.

I can't take another..

[sobbing]

- Oh, God. - It's gonna be alright, mom.

- It's gonna be okay. - Okay?

Don't cry. Diana's gonna be okay, mom.

[Michael] 'She's not gonna die. She won't.'

[somber music]

[male commentator #1] 'Here's one of the lines almost picked it off.'

[male commentator #2] 'Let's go with a crossing pattern.'

'A lot of lines around the ball'

'and I'll bet Gordon would like to have that one back.'

[male commentator #1] 'So second down and ten coming up.'

'Dwayne, the fullback'

'bruising type runner gets it to the 16 yard line.'

'Peter Wayne.'

'Six foot senior from San Jose.'

'Fourth year of football.'

'It's a big play right here.'

[chuckles]

[male commentator #2] 'The Lions have an opportunity to stop him.'

[knocking]

Where have you been, guys? Doors open. Come on in.

Doors open.

Eric. Hey, big guy, what are you doing?

Wanna watch the game? Want a beer?

My sister's sick, Mack.

My mom's with her at the hospital.

I think you better go down there.

Yeah, yeah.

Uh..

Did your mother tell you to come and get me?

No, she doesn't know I'm here.

[instrumental music]

Why didn't she call me?

She'd never admit this.

[Eric] 'She'd k*ll me for coming over here and telling you.'

But..

'...she needs you.'

Doctor, you, you've got to do something

to get her off the machine. I'm sorry.

That machine is keeping your daughter alive.

But I can't, she can't stand it.

I've never seen her like that. I mean..

Chronic dialysis is a miracle of modern science.

It's a painless procedure.

- Time consuming. - How time consuming?

We had hoped the dialysis could be a temporary measure

until the kidney function improved.

[Ellen] 'Unfortunately, the damage is irreversible.'

'Your daughter will have to come to the hospital'

'three times a week for four hours a session.'

- For how long? - 'For the rest of her life.'

Until something better comes along.

For the rest of her life?

Renal failure, such as your daughter's has been 100 percent

fatal until chronic dialysis, and many patients need--

She's not a patient. She's my daughter.

You don't know her.

No, I don't.

There is an alternative, a transplant.

[indistinct chatter]

Identical twins make the best donors.

After that blood relatives, the closer, the better.

We can run tests on you, your husband.

- My husband's dead. - I'm sorry.

[Ellen] 'What about your other children?'

What about them?

Well, would they be willing to donate?

How risky is the procedure?

Risky. But it doesn't end there.

The donor will be living the rest of his or her life

[Ellen] 'in a considerably more fragile state.'

What if it doesn't take.

Living related donor transplants

are about 80 percent successful for the first two years.

- After that, she's home free. - And if it's not a relative?

Then we can put her on a waiting list

for a cadaver transplant.

[Ellen] 'Those are less successful. About 50 percent.'

Would she have to wait?

Anywhere from three months to three years.

She can't wait that long. What do I have to do?

[crying]

- She's my sister. - I know, darling.

So let 'em test me.

They have to test all of us, honey.

[somber music]

I don't want her to be sick.

- 'I just want to help her.' - I know you do.

They have to test all of us and whoever...matches.

They think Diana's gonna die.

- Karen? - It's her kidneys.

- She needs a transplant. - I wanna give her my kidneys.

I want her to let 'em test me first.

Take mine. I don't want it. I don't want her to die, mom.

- Don't want her.. - I know, honey.

They have to give us all blood tests.

Michael, let's go. We have to go.

Come on, Eric.

[tense music]

[monitor beeping]

[music continues]

Hey, funny face.

[monitor beeping]

[woman on PA] 'Doctor Rogers, 1-7-4-2. Doctor Rogers, 1-7-4-2.'

[elevator dings]

Guys, I'm gonna go see Diana.

Eric, how'd it go?

They said it'd take about a half hour.

If the blood tests are okay

then they're gonna take the tissue test.

[sighs]

Hey, I'm proud of you, Michael.

I'm proud of both of you guys.

She's our sister.

We fight a lot, but she's okay.

[Mack chuckles] 'She's okay?'

'You know, she's lucky to have you guys as brothers.'

We just don't want anything to happen to her.

It's important to be strong now.

Not just for Diana, but for your mother.

[Mack] 'She needs you now more than ever.'

Yeah, I know I can count on you both

and to be there for her.

Right?

Hey, why don't you take a walk for a few minutes

get some fresh air.

Go ahead. I'll find you.

[indistinct chatter]

[breathes deeply]

You know, I can't believe what this family's gone through

in the past year.

First her husband, and now her daughter's in there.

She's got to let me help her.

I know she wants you to.

[instrumental music]

She should have called me.

She's got too much pride.

Last year, I watched her go through

the most difficult time of her life.

[Valene] 'And she had to do it all on her own.'

Don't let her have to do that again.

What if nobody's works?

How can I take one of your kidneys anyway?

It's so horrible.

[somber music]

We all just wanna help you.

Any way we can.

But what if it doesn't work?

Then we'll get through it.

We'll get through it together.

One step at a time.

Mommy.

Why?

[music continues]

I don't know, baby.

I don't know.

[tense music]

Karen.

- Mack. - That's okay.

Come on over here, we'll talk.

I can't, Mack, I can't go through this again.

I can't, I can't, I can't.

Oh, Mack!

[sobbing]

God.

I'm okay, I'm okay, I'm okay.

Dr. Gilbert.

I'm sorry, none of you has the right blood type.

Diana's type O.

You and your sons are type B.

Her father must have had type O.

I'm afraid none of you are suitable donors.

[Ellen] 'We can put you on a waiting list for a cadaver transplant.'

She can't wait.

The only other possibility is

if your husband had any brothers or sisters

[Ellen] 'perhaps one of them might match'

Abby.

[Ellen] 'It's only a chance'

'but if she has the right blood and tissue type.'

'She'd be the next best donor.'

I can't ask Abby.

You got to.

[tense music]

You know, of the top 20 albums

four of them are Jeff Munson's.

He can put Ciji with the best producers.

We've already got our producer.

- Kenny? - 'Yeah.'

[Gary] 'He happens to be a partner in this company.'

Kenny's not good enough, Gary.

Look, if he had what it takes

he would have made it a long time ago.

There comes a time in this business

that you have to decide if you're gonna make it

or play by the rules.

You can't have them both.

[doorbell rings]

Karen, come on in.

What is it?

Diana needs a transplant or else she could die.

[Garry] 'Is there anything we can do?'

[somber music]

- 'Only Abby can help now.' - Me?

How?

She needs a donor.

We tested.

Please.

[Karen] 'Please.'

[sobbing]

[suspenseful music]

[ending theme]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]
