I got a telegram from Bobby. They're reading daddy's will.

And I thought you might wanna be there.

Would you please leave?

There are a lot of things you could do!

- Like what? - Like busting her.

If she won't quit.

'Like not letting her be alone'

the day she puts her life on the line.

- Did she agree to co-operate? - Uh..

She wouldn't even talk about it, and it's just possible

that I may come out of Dallas with nothing.

[Roy] 'Did you try to set us up, too, like your husband did?'

We got a problem now, Mrs. Fairgate.

[Frank] 'What to do with you.'

- Hello? - 'Mrs. Fairgate, it's Wayne.'

- 'I didn't wake you, did I?' - No, Wayne.

- Uh, i-is there a problem? - 'No, ma'am.'

[Wayne on phone] 'Just I heard from the supplier this morning.'

'Our part shipment is coming in today.'

- Wonderful. - 'Yeah.'

[Wayne] 'That's why I wanted to catch you at home'

'in case you want to stop at the bank on the way in.'

To get a certified check. That's a good idea.

Well, um, what time is the shipment coming in?

'This afternoon's all they said.'

Well, I'll see you later with the check.

'Yes, ma'am.'

Bye, Wayne. Thanks.

[receiver clanks]

Relax, Marshall.

No problem.

"No problem." Our problems start today.

Knots Landing Motors is a perfect cover.

No sauce. I don't believe these guys. Or it could be nobody.

Oh, God. But Karen thinks that he's the man.

[chuckles] How could I let Karen?

You ever tried to talk her out of something

when she's dead set on?

Well, what is she dead set on?

Revenge. Justice. Who knows?

[Joe] 'Now, what is her plan?'

I don't even know if she has a plan.

[Mack] 'She's just keeping this guy Harkness around'

'to see if she can come up with something.'

No, no, no, she's got something up her sleeve.

Well, when you find out, you let me know, huh?

There's no time for that, whatever's gonna go down

is gonna go down today!

- How you know that? - Because she's my sister.

I know her like a book. She was nervous this morning!

She was touchy, even testy.

She was gonna withdraw a lot of money from the bank.

- Yeah? How much? - I don't know, about 20 grand.

I only got a quick look at her books.

[Joe] 'Look, if she is in danger..'

She's not in danger. I told her to stay away from those guys.

[chuckles] You've told her? You told her. So big deal!

What are you gonna do, huh? You're gonna teach her a lesson?

You're gonna let her get k*lled

because she didn't listen to you?

I know who we're talking about.

We're talking about a hard-headed lady who thinks

she can handle anything, doesn't even know what she's up against.

Now will you sit down? Have a taco without the sauce.

You know you can't talk to her. You can only tell us.

Yeah, but there are a lot of things you could do!

- Like what? - Like..

Never letting her out of your sight.

Like busting her if she won't quit!

'Like not letting her be alone'

the day she puts her life on the line.

- Damn it! - Where are you going, Joe?

[chuckles]

Where do you think, you creep?

Next time you come up here, you're gonna need a pass!

Creep.

No taco sauce. Cold tacos.

[mumbles]

We can't put those parts on the truck in the daylight.

I told the woman what happened this afternoon.

Well, tell her there's been a hang-up.

We'll take 'em over this evening.

What's the problem? The truck's here.

Yeah, but what if one of those loaders

makes those parts as stolen?

Then, thanks to Angelo, we're dead men.

Yeah, all of us, Marsh, uh..

...all of us stone-cold dead in the market.

Tell him why, Marsh.

Because Angelo paid these guys to stay out of business

after Fairgate's death.

- Figured they were too hot. - We're still too hot.

Only now you two guys are in the same boat.

Now, if you don't wanna wind up wearing cement moccasins

you peddle these parts slow and easy, so nobody notices.

Each of us makes six-seven grand a month.

[Roy] 'Now, that's not a bad payday for a few phone calls.'

'Even the widow does okay.'

She makes a nice profit and doesn't know the source.

That's what I keep telling Wayne.

Good, you keep telling 'em that, but do it real quiet

Then when I see someone really sexy..

...or younger, and I say, "Who am I kidding?"

[Joe] 'Where is Karen anyway?'

Wherever she is, find her and stall her.

- 'Karen hasn't been here.' - What?

I thought you three were coming together.

- She hasn't been here at all? - Mn-mn.

- No. - Excuse me, Richard, Laura.

Well, where are you going? Wait a minute.

Wait, you just got here. You haven't eaten anything yet.

- Richard. We'll be back. - What's going on?

You-you haven't eaten it. Do you want something to go?

[suspenseful music]

It's either gonna be Ferragamo or Jones.

The key is Jones, if he performs well

hey, you're gonna take it all the way.

Jones is brittle.

Besides, I'm tired

of losing my money on the Rams.

Hey, then start betting the Giants.

[Frank] 'What do you mean bet the Giants?'

[Roy] 'Take the points they always go with.'

- 'Now you tell me ' - 'Heh-heh. Frank.'

[indistinct chatter]

[suspenseful music]

[door opens]

[door shuts]

[Karen] 'I want my money back.'

These are stolen parts, I want them out of here

and I want my money back.

- No, Mrs. Fairgate. - Yes, Mr. Harkness.

I want it back.

What do you think, Ms. Fairgate?

He asks, we give the money back?

- We're not that nice. - It don't work that way.

[Roy] 'Did you try to set us up, too, like your husband did?'

You remember what happened to him?

You bet I do.

We got a problem now, Mrs. Fairgate.

What to do with you.

We better talk about it.

Don't hurt her. She won't do nothing.

Why don't we, uh, take a walk, Mrs. Fairgate?

And, uh, then we can talk about it

and find out what it's all about.

So, uh, ha, what was your plan, Mrs. Fairgate?

Uh, were you gonna machine-g*n us to death by yourself?

What'd you have in mind, lady? We'd like to hear.

Frank, you know

I think, uh, we need to talk to this lady

to make her understand what this is..

[metal clanking]

[tires screeching]

[car door shuts]

[suspenseful music]

Roy.

Frank.

Angelo.

Doing business, fellas?

We were gonna call you about this, Angelo..

[Angelo] 'Roy, I'm surprised and disappointed in you.'

Well, you know our operation.

If the informer hadn't told us about this

our computers would have sooner or later.

[indistinct]

Let the lady go, Roy.

Let's keep this clean.

[switch clicks]

[Mack] 'Angelo.'

How you doing, big guy?

Mr. MacKenzie.

Goodnight, Angelo.

[music continues]

[engine starts]

[engine revving]

[Mack] 'Hey, Joe, heh-heh, this guy still has hold of your sister.'

Are you okay?

Roy, Frank, Wayne, you guys are free to go, too.

Well, what?

What about those guys out there?

What guys?

- Angelo and his boys. - They'll k*ll us.

I don't know how I can help you.

Hey, you can't make us leave here, MacKenzie.

I've gotta have something to hold you on.

Right now I've got nothing to hold you on.

- Like what? - 'A written confession.'

[Joe] 'Of the events that led to the death of Sid Fairgate.'

- 'Oh. No way.' - Hey, that's a little stiff.

Why don't we just talk about it, huh?

Officers

would you please escort these guys off my sister's premises?

I didn't know he was gonna crash, Mrs. Fairgate.

These guys, these two just paid me to leave the

cut the brake fluid out, which is what I did.

I didn't know he was gonna crash like that.

- Karen. - 'Promise.'

Karen, it's okay. Karen?

[sighs]

You know, you can save us all a lot of trouble

by taking that walk outside.

Now you're either gonna leave with us

or you can leave without us.

What's it gonna be?

[instrumental music]

Karen.

I thought..

[sighs] I thought, when this moment came, that I'd-I'd..

...I don't know, do something.

Cry, scream.

Hit them, spit in their faces.

Cookie.

What?

What?

I don't know.

I don't know how to react.

Well, what are you feeling now?

[sighs] Come on, right at this moment.

That's just the thing.

I don't know.

I just can't tell.

What are you thinking then?

Karen.

You've got to be thinking something.

What? Tell me.

[laughing]

That I haven't eaten all day.

[laughing]

[sobbing]

Oh, mm.

Oh, mm, Richard. Oh, Richard, mm.

So in the end I called the cop friend of mine

asked him to find out what, uh, he could about a shipment

of stolen parts coming into Knots Landing tonight.

I thought nobody knew about it.

Right, until word got out, and the stoolie got next to Angelo.

They really do say stoolie?

[Richard] 'You see, Mack's a traditionalist.'

'He still says things like stoolie and heater and--'

[Mack] 'Yeah, and then once Angelo knew, then there was no way out'

'for Roy or Frank or the other schlub.'

[Abby] 'Those hoods must be singing their hearts out by now.'

You had this all figured from the start, didn't you?

Oh, Joe, you've lost your mind, now you're really

letting your imagination run wild.

[Joe] 'No. She had it figured from the start.'

'She planned it. She set the bait.'

'Wayne took it and Roy and Frank took it, and so did you, Mack.'

- 'And so did I.' - You've lost your mind.

[Joe] 'She had it figured right down to Angelo and the stoolie.'

'She set it up so the crooks would take care of their own.'

'You planned the whole thing, didn't you, Karen? Karen.'
