[announcer]
Ladies and gentlemen,
this is built by Dave Kindig
and KevDogg,
selling at no-reserve.
[Dave] Well, here we are
in Kissimmee, Florida,
at the Mecum Auto Auctions.
-[Kevin] I've seen
some of the rarest rare cars.
-[Dave] Right?
That's pretty.
Am I tripping?
-Are those lit?
-[Kevin] Those are lit.
What's in my
price range, Dave?
-Can I interest you
in a 914 two-liter?
-No.
[man 1] Yeah!
[Dave] When I look
at a blank canvas,
I see endless possibilities.
As the ideas come to mind,
the lines start to fall
into place.
And before you know it,
we have a Bitchin' Ride.
A Bitchin' Ride
has intense color...
-[man 2 laughs]
-[man 3] This is gorgeous.
[Dave] ...performance...
[man 4] It's fantastic.
[Dave] ...stance,
wheels, sound.
There's one thing
that makes our car stand out,
ours are itchin' Rides.
-[man 5] Well,
it never gets old.
-[man 6 laughs]
[phone ringing]
-Hey, Dave.
-[Dave chuckles] Hey, Don.
You're on your boat?
[Don chuckles] Yeah. I'm on...
I'm on my boat, yeah.
-[chuckles]
-Nice.
Nice break from
the Idaho winters.
So my very good friend Don
called me up today,
and he owns CF1 number 5.
So what's going on?
As a car collector,
part of the thrill is, uh,
is not only buying them,
but, uh, selling them.
-Sure, sure.
-[Don] And, yeah...
You know, I've been
entertaining the thought
of putting, uh,
putting the, uh,
CF1 up for sale.
Although this is, uh,
this is certainly the best car
I've got in the collection.
-Oh, thank you.
-[Don] I...
I kind of...
I kind of liken it to, uh...
You know, Babe Ruth
got traded to the Yankees.
So like, you know,
even the best players
get traded once in a while.
So I'm, uh, I'm in the process
of, uh, working with a...
with a large auction house
that has an auction
in Kissimmee, Florida.
What I really wanted to ask
is, uh, if I could get, uh,
and convince you and Kevin
to, uh, attend the auction.
Promote it, uh,
while it's there.
You're asking me
to go somewhere warm
in the middle of the winter?
Yeah, I'd... I'd love
to come out there
and do that.
Awesome. You know,
I'm... I'm... I'm looking to,
uh, uh, go no-reserve on it.
[Dave] Anytime you're
selling a car, there's always
inheritant risks.
There's always a chance
that somebody's gonna try
and beat you up
and take it for nothing,
which kind of sucks.
You know, we could do
a private sale on it,
but the auction
could go to the moon.
You never know.
Well, that's part
of the thrill, too.
Uh, it creates
a lot of anxiety...
-[Dave chuckles]
-...but, uh, you know...
And I've... I've had
all kinds of experiences,
uh, both good, not so good,
not great.
But, um, you know,
the confidence that I have
in the build, um,
you know,
it's, uh, it's a...
it's rolling artwork,
and, uh, I've never had
anything like it and, uh,
it's a great car.
So I think it speaks
for itself,
and I'm confident
there's a lot of buyers
in the house.
I'm excited, actually,
to see what it'll do,
to be honest with you.
I have all the confidence
in the world in my team
and our builds,
and I think this will go
to the moon.
-I'm in.
We'll see you in Florida.
-Okay, buddy.
All right, man.
Give my best to Teri.
Yeah, I will. Let's have fun.
-All right, pal. Take care.
-[Don] Okay.
[Dave] This is
actually gonna be
kind of exciting for me.
Send it into the wind,
see if it takes off.
[auctioneer speaking]
[Dave] I'm very excited to see
how this CF1's gonna sell,
but also, I'm very excited
just to check out all the rest
of the cars.
Well, here we are
in Kissimmee, Florida,
at the Mecum Auto Auctions
selling number five.
I know. And I'm collecting
all the sun while we're here.
-Because it is...
-Yeah, when it comes out.
'Cause it is snowing like
nobody's business at home.
Oh, this is very warm.
It's not just
the weather, buddy.
It's the atmosphere.
[Kevin] There's over
-This is huge.
-[Dave] Right. I know.
over 40 full collections,
and over 500
classic Corvettes,
but none like
the one we brought, brother.
Dude, I am... Dude,
I am in the atmosphere
-and you...
but you not... I may...
-Are you thinking...
-You wanna...
-I don't know. Maybe.
-You got a visi... You got
a visitor's pass, right?
-I did. I did. I did.
I'm in... I'm in the mood.
I could be buying
whatever I want.
Well, you know what?
-You gotta look the part.
-This is linked to
Kindig-It credit.
Oh. Let me have that.
-Give me that back.
-Let me put my hand up.
-I'm practicing.
I'm practicing.
-Keep your hand down.
-Don't say hi to me either.
-[Kevin] I'm practicing.
You know, it's amazing
how many people actually come
to an auction,
whether they're buying a car
or if they're just
checking it out.
I mean, this is a great show
just in itself, right?
Oh, 100%.
You see a lot of rare cars...
-[Dave] Uh-huh.
-...that you probably
never get a chance.
A lot of these cars
sit in people's collections...
-[Dave] Right.
-...and they never get shown.
They never get seen.
And then you also
can come to an auction
-to kind of really see what
the market's doing, right?
-[Dave] Mmm-hmm.
[Kevin] This is like
a live, in time
what the market's doing.
[Dave] This is still
the best way to invest money
and flip it later on
and make a profit on them.
I... I... I guarantee you
that you get more return
on classic cars
than you do on a certificate
right now.
Mmm. I could see that.
[Dave] I'm excited to see
how a CF1 will do on the
east coast of this auction.
But first, we ought to see
if we can find something
for Kevin to buy.
If Kev is really actually
interested in bidding
and buying a car,
I'm here to help him.
-If I was gonna buy a car
at the auction...
-Mmm-hmm.
...I would make sure that...
The first thing
I would say is,
"Make sure that it..."
And I can't say it
'cause I'm in a relationship.
I'd be like, "Make sure
it pulls all the ladies."
But, you know,
I'm gonna get in
big trouble for that.
I was... I thought
you were gonna say,
"I just want to make sure
it's got a microwave
-in the passenger's
side of the dash...
-[Kevin laughs]
...so I can warm up
my hot pockets.
-Maybe a toaster oven
would be better, though.
-[Kevin] Oh!
-[Dave] Whoo!
-[Kevin] What's in that...
-What's that?
-[Dave] I gotta see this.
-[Kevin] This is the
Magnum, P.I. ar, right?
-[Dave] No, it's not.
This is a flat-12.
This is 512 BBi.
-So this is better than
the Magnum, P.I. ar.
-Um,
it's a different car,
so it's longer wheelbase.
It's got a V12.
I don't know a lot
about this one in particular,
but I know that this was
actually that motor,
and that setup
was basically the precursor
to the Ferrari Testarossa,
of, like, the Miami Vice ra.
You know, the '88.
I'm gonna go find Kevin.
He'll be able to tell me
all about this.
[chuckles] I know, right?
Where's Kevin when you
need him?
-[Kevin] What is this, Dave?
-[Dave] This is cool.
-[Kevin] Is this a Stinger?
-[Dave] It is.
Wow, look at the...
look at the leather.
The carpet, the interior
is just beautiful.
That basketweave.
I really like this
trim treatment, too.
So it's the a '90,
but they make it look retro,
so they make it back
into the '70s.
So the '69 styled headlight
or turn signals,
that kind of stuff.
Obviously, the hood's
a bit different.
-Do they drive?
-Yeah.
-Do they rip?
-Oh, yeah. Yeah.
-I love the color
and everything.
-You think this is my budget?
I don't think so.
I think this is probably
$1.2 million.
Let's just see
what they estimate
what it's gonna go for.
-Let's just go. I don't
even wanna look anymore.
-Oh, let's just...
Now you got my curiosity up.
Get my readers out here.
-[Kevin] One-point-two
to one-point-three.
-Told you.
Well, it's a lot better than
again, it's still
a little high for me.
[Dave] Okay. Kev.
So I'm a little older
than you.
-You can go ahead
and say it now.
-[Kevin] Oh, a little?
[Dave chuckles] Okay.
-[Kevin] Almost a
quarter century.
-Right?
So growing up,
the cars that just was like
so over the top,
there's three
that come to mind
that aren't the normal
Countach, Testarossas,
whatever.
That was an all-wheel drive.
They didn't make very many
of them.
It was like
the supercar of supercars.
And then the, uh,
Jaguar XJ220.
-[Kevin] What was
the third one?
-[Dave] Third one was the, uh,
-the Vector W2.
-I knew you were
gonna say that.
Vector, 'cause it's just
so weird
-to see that these are...
-But that... but that...
...these are not
very common cars at all.
These were the supercars
at the top of...
the... the...
the highest line.
[Kevin] Super funny,
'cause you can look back
and see that these cars
are from the same era.
-Uh-huh.
-They're so...
-Slippery.
-...smooth and slippery.
-[Dave] Uh-huh. Nope.
-[Kevin] There's no,
there's no wedges.
They're all just kind of
smoothed over.
And then what did this
have in it?
[Dave] So,
I couldn't tell you.
Uh, I'd have to read it
to look smart.
I think these are
a four-liter...
I think they're a...
It's a V8...
Uh, 3.5-liter, uh, V6...
-[Kevin] V6?
-...twin-turbo. Yep.
V6 twin-turbo.
That's not...
Is that estimated how much
-the car is selling for?
-Yeah.
That's not bad.
That's a lot of money, Dave.
It's not a boat,
so I am kind of curious to see
how much he'll give up
for a car.
It is a lot of money,
but that's not
-as much as I thought
this car would be.
-It's just a... this is just a
-big car.
-It's a very large car.
I don't know if this would
actually fit in my garage.
-so I might not be a player.
-[Kevin] It's very...
Dude, this is as long
as the Chevy Dually.
It's almost as wide, too.
Did you...
Did you see the back
of the car?
-[Kevin] Hey, real...
real talk, though.
-[Dave] Yeah?
If we ever get
one of these in the shop,
engine's going in the front.
Look how much room
you would have for a hot tub
right here.
[Dave] No, Kev. I'm not...
I'm not even gonna look at it.
-Yeah.
-There is actually
a lot of room there
-for a hot tub.
-That's what I'm saying.
-That's what I'm saying.
-You'd have to go
front-wheel drive, though.
Stop.
If this car had a hot tub
in the back...
[scoffs] ...I would bid on it
in a heartbeat.
Who cares about price range
at that point?
That's just bitchin'.
What's in my
price range, Dave?
-[Dave] Can I interest you
in a 914 two-liter?
-[Kevin] No.
This is actually
a really good one.
This looks like a
Porsche version of Miata.
So this is what
they always refer to as
"the poor man's Porsche."
-Okay.
-Um,
but 914 is actually known
as being one of the
-best handling Porsches
ever built. Mmm-hmm. Yep.
-Really?
Lightweight, mid engine,
so the positioning
of the engine was
actually more favorable
in the 914 than it was
in the 911.
Dave's a Porsche guy,
and he's almost
got me convinced.
-So the engine's
right here? Huh!
-Correct. Yeah.
I think you could get into
that pretty reasonable.
And then maybe
not quite as reasonable,
a V12, uh, E-type.
Yeah. This is probably
more my speed.
If something
piques my interest,
I'm gonna bid on it.
Now, this is more my speed.
We are at an
in Kissimmee, Florida,
and I'm in the mood to bid.
I've been striking out
with a lot of fun options,
but that are completely
out of my price range.
Look at this.
This is interesting.
This screams "KevDogg."
-That's nice.
-[Dave] Yeah, it is.
Ultimate Headers,
but look, they're ceramic,
except for the flange.
That's kind of cool.
[Kevin] Oh, that is cool.
[Dave] So the
Super Cheyenne interior?
[Kevin] Yeah, this is cool.
[Dave] Hey,
look at the headliner, too.
[Kevin] Is that
just sprayed in there?
I think so.
[Kevin] Did this sell already?
We have a contender here,
for sure,
but there's 5,000-plus
more cars to check out.
[Dave] Little restomod.
That's pretty cool.
-Look at that.
-It's a Lingenfelter setup.
-[Kevin] Mmm, it's a...
-[Dave] It's a LT5.
-...old LT5.
-[Dave] Wow.
Wow, that's crazy.
[Dave] Whose chassis is it on?
It's a C4.
Probably a Newman.
-[man 6] Newman...
Newman chassis.
-Incorporated...
-Oh, Newman?
-It is a Newman? Okay.
[man 6] Any questions
I could answer?
-[woman 1] You're better
looking in person.
-Oh, thank you.
You need to get a better TV.
-Yeah. Hey!
-[man 6 laughs]
-I got your back, dude.
-Thanks. I, uh...
-No, that means she needs
to get a... get a bigger TV.
-Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
-Get a bigger TV. Whatever.
-A better TV.
Some of these jokes
just go, just right,
like, right over the hair,
like, straight up and over.
[Dave] So,
the John Lingenfelter,
I'm a very good friend
with, uh, Ken Lingenfelter...
So what is the significance
having John Lingenfelter
on the car?
He built the engine.
-Oh, he did? Okay.
-And he's my brother.
-Oh, he is? John was?
-Yeah. Yeah.
-[man 6] I went and
got that made yesterday.
-[Dave] Oh, very good.
[man 6] Should I
keep it on tomorrow
-to go through the line?
-Yes, you should.
Leave it on there.
Your car is beautiful
out there.
-[Dave] Thank you very much.
-[Kevin] Thank you.
I always go visit you
when I visit Ken at SEMA.
-Nice.
-Well, right on.
-Well, thank you very much.
-Hey, thanks for stopping by.
-No worries.
-Hey, yeah. It's a
beautiful car. Best of luck.
When does this go over?
Uh, probably about 4:30.
Today? Awesome.
-Best of luck to you.
-Thank you.
-Very nice to meet you.
Thank you.
-[man 6] Thank you.
-That's cool, huh?
-Yeah. That's really cool.
Look at... Here's the beast
right here.
Do you think this
is in my price range?
[Dave] Um, I don't know.
I always say, don't finance
your toys.
-This is cool.
-[Kevin] This thing
is a beast.
I mean, you drove one.
Yes, I've... I've dro...
and it's just unbelievable.
Unbelievable.
[Kevin] That's insane.
Well, there's one.
I'm gonna put this on my list.
-[Dave] There you go.
-Saturday 120.
-What's this Porsche
right here?
-[Dave] Ooh!
"Exclusive series"? Oh.
So it's got, uh, carbon fiber
insert roof panel.
-[Kevin] "One of 500
produced worldwide."
-[Dave] Yeah.
-607 horse? Jeez.
-[Dave] Crazy.
Dude, this one hasn't even
had her cherry popped.
You can't say that on TV.
A hundred and eleven miles?
[Dave] My personal thing...
If I was gonna spend
in that range,
I'd probably buy something
a little bit more exotic,
that's not as common.
-There's only 500 of these.
-I know there's only 500
of them,
but from the outside
looking in...
-That's fair.
-Oh.
Well, okay, let me back
that up a little bit.
I bet this is actually
very comfortable to drive.
[Kevin] And to me,
this is I mean, again,
that's a lot of money
for this car.
-Don't get me wrong...
-[Dave] Sure.
...But this is a car
that I feel like you could
just actually
drive the wheels off
and enjoy it.
You could get your enjoyment
for the money you spent.
Let me ask you this.
Maybe I could save
a little bit of money.
Do you think Porsche has,
like an Eddie Bauer edition?
What'd... what'd that be?
-Just like--
-For... for off-road?
No, just maybe, like,
a little... a step down from
this limited edition.
Maybe they have
an Eddie Bauer.
-I think that's
maybe more my--
-Eddie Bauer actually
-was the higher level trim.
-For Ford, though.
-For Ford.
-For Ford, yeah.
-So you're going
the wrong way...
-That would be the
-lower end for Ford.
-It's like...
No, no. The 914
over there would actually
be a little bit more
entry level for you.
[both laugh]
[Kevin] Oh, what is this?
Is this the same one?
[Dave] Uh...
-Yeah.
-[Kevin] Yeah. Yeah, look.
But this one has 355 miles,
that one has 110.
-Wow.
-So it's not really that rare.
There's two of them here.
Yeah. Kind of cool.
Look at the canvas on the top.
Oh, this one is a convertible.
-That one is not.
-Yep. Mmm-hmm.
-But look at the...
-[Kevin] Oh, I see that.
...carbon fiber
running through the top.
[Kevin] Yeah, this one's out
of my price range.
Yeah. Might be
out of mine, too.
We're gonna
take a little break
from car shopping
and focus on the reason
that we're actually here.
Dave, walk us through.
How did the car turn out?
So you know, really,
I mean, the romance,
as I was saying earlier
about the original '53,
this is America's sports car.
I mean, it truly is.
But there was
a lot of problems,
as you can see,
trying to fit a normal
sized person.
I think people were much
smaller back in 1953.
So you know, really, to the...
to the degree of customizing
we did to the car,
I left actually the height
of the front of the fender
to the chin,
actually the same
as the original cars.
But why this
so much lower
is we've actually taken
three inches to zero
and we basically
have channeled the car,
setting it down,
giving a lot more of a sleeker
look to the top of the car.
All I did was go get a drink
and come back.
What is going on over here?
We've stretched the door
but left the base, uh,
the wheelbase the same.
I've re-arched
the wheel wells around
the bigger diameter wheels,
chopped the windshield,
made it to where
somebody at six foot,
you know, five
could actually fit in the car,
We put in a Lingenfelter,
a bit more horsepower.
This is 652
to the rear wheels and
With the carbon fiber body,
the chassis from Roadster Shop
and everything that we've done
on this car,
with a full tank of gas,
this car weighs 3,025 lb.
[chuckles] So it's a rocket.
Now, are there any particular
touches on this example
that set it apart?
[Dave] Every one of my cars,
when we do the CF1,
it's very important to me
to give each one
its own style cue,
its own personality,
which means that I'm not gonna
do any two cars the same
color combination.
This one in particular
is done in my modern classic
Cha-Ching Silver.
And we have
an auburn red interior,
which I just love
the color combinations.
It's very European,
which I really wanted to tie
a lot of European styling
back into the car,
notably the headlights,
the tail lights
and, of course,
the sleek look of the car.
And I just think
it really is classy.
You know, the whole thing
is just the full package.
For those who have
never seen this car in person,
how would you explain it
in a phrase what the CF1 is
and represents?
Oh, that's easy.
That's only one word.
Bitchin'.
[Kevin] I always say,
"If you don't get invited
to the party,
just throw your own."
Yeah!
[Kevin] I can
hear the burnouts.
Now, I just have to find it.
Believe it or not,
in my experience,
parties are way more fun
with other people.
So I got Lark here with me.
I'm gonna see if I can
convince her to join me
in a romantic burnout ride.
All right, let's do this.
-Okay.
-Let's go.
The land of horsepower.
[tires screeching]
Hell, yeah.
-What do you mean...
Are you scared?
-I don't know
-about that.
-Now you're scared?
Come on.
While Dave's out
talking about Corvettes,
I decided to do something
way more fun.
I'm gonna jump in this car
and do some peely outs.
-[engine roaring]
-[Kevin laughs excitedly]
Yeah!
Whoo!
-Whoo! How was that, boss?
-That was awesome, dude.
That was awesome.
-Isn't it awesome?
-That... It was awesome!
For this little tiny area,
he really just got it done.
It's not that bad, babe.
I think you should come.
You'll really enjoy it.
Are you driving?
Uh... why?
-Maybe.
-Uh...
-No, you gotta...
-I'll go with you if a
professional's driving.
Oh, this is bull...
-Everybody ready?
-We're good.
I'm excited.
-You're excited?
-Yes.
-Also terrified. It's fine.
-No, you're fine.
I mean,
we're just in a little
stock family four-door.
-Yeah, this is
just a stock car.
-Okay. Yeah.
-It's stock?
-And it's stock.
It is bone stock.
[Kevin] Let's do it.
-[Lark yells]
-[laughing]
[Kevin yells] Nice.
-[Lark yelling]
-Nice.
[Kevin] Nice. Hee-hee!
You know,
that just never gets old.
Oh, never.
That's why I said
you have to do this all day?
I know. Work, work, work.
I hate to break it to Dave,
but I think I found a new job.
I'm probably
just gonna get paid
to ride around
in these cars all day.
-That was awesome. Thank you.
-Oh, that's so awesome.
Thank you.
Thank you, guys.
That... that was so much fun.
-That was awesome.
-Good job, babe.
That was awesome.
Did you see how close
he got to the curb?
-Did you see how close
he got to that trailer?
-No, my eyes were closed.
-What do you mean
your eyes were closed?
-I'm sure my eyes were closed.
-For a little bit.
Just a little bit.
-When he came around the
trailer, I was like,
"Oh, we might hit," but then,
nope, he's just like...
[whooshes]
We've done cliff jumping.
Now we've ridden
drift cars together.
What's the next step
in our relationship?
[Lark] Definitely, skydiving.
Skydiving it is.
-Aw.
-Aw?
-[Kevin] You were
all over the back, huh?
-[Lark] Uh, yeah.
I don't know where
Kevin's exactly been,
but we are getting a
little bit closer to our time
up on the auction block.
Wow, look at that one.
And the room we run into
is all vintage Ferraris.
Oh, stop.
This one's cheap.
-[Kevin] This is cool.
-[Dave chuckles]
I was joking.
[Kevin] It's just such a
different looking
-Ferrari for me.
-[Dave] Mmm-hmm.
Just classy.
I wonder how many
actual models Ferrari had,
'cause there's...
I mean, they're just...
it's weird that to see such
an eclectic one like this.
This 400 Superamerica
Ferrari is not a typical
run-of-the-mill Ferrari
because, well, there just
wasn't that many of them.
[softly] Wow.
[in normal voice]
That's pretty.
Look at the Frenched-in,
uh, turn signals.
So this is one of ten.
[Kevin] Nine of...
but it's nine of ten.
[Dave] Yeah.
[Kevin] So number nine of ten.
They only build ten
-because that's all
they can do in a year?
-I'm not sure.
-Hello, Dave. Hello, Kevin.
-Hi, how's it going?
Good. I'm Kevin Caulfield.
-Hey, Kevin, nice to meet you.
-Good to meet you.
-Do you know anything
about these-- Oh.
-You like the NART?
Well, first off, what does
the NART stand for?
What does that mean?
[rock music playing]
[Kevin C] NART stands
-for North American
Racing Team...
-[Dave] Okay.
[Kevin C]...that was founded
by Luigi Chinetti,
a three-time Le Mans winner.
He provided Ferrari
their first Le Mans victory
in 1949,
-and their most recent
until last year in 1965.
-[Kevin] Wow.
-[Dave] No kidding.
-So Mr. Chinetti is
a big deal.
He went to Scaglietti
and said,
"You know, the U.S. market,
we haven't had
an open Ferrari for years.
We need to bring that back."
So he thought, "You know,
I think we'll probably do 120,
but let's start with 10."
Even with all his success,
his great black book
and whatnot,
he struggled
to sell 10 of these.
-Really?
-So that was it.
-And this is
the ninth of the 10.
-[Kevin] Wow.
[Kevin C] Thus they're
highly desirable
and sought after.
The history on the Ferraris is
just fantastic.
I've always been
a huge fan of Ferrari,
and it's just cool
to be in a room
with this much...
history, you know?
I noticed over here...
So I'm a big fan...
This might sound
a little cliche.
I'm a huge fan
of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
-Okay.
-And of course,
the California is the car.
So I'm sorry,
but I'm going to have
to take it for a ride.
I've got to go get my wife
from school,
-if you know what I mean.
-[Caulfield laughs]
-Do you have the keys
by chance, Kevin? [laughs]
-Sure.
[rock music playing]
Cal Spyder, yeah, that's been
a popular movie car.
[Dave] And I mean,
this is beautiful.
It's classy. It's timeless.
The same V12 engine,
-if you will, the basics...
-Uh-huh.
...are in every car
in this room.
Part of what made Ferrari
so unique is
they took their racing cars
-and moved them
into street cars.
-Right, right, right.
Typically,
the manufacturer takes
a street car
-and tries to make it
a race car.
-Right.
-And it's hard to go back
in that direction.
-Yeah, exactly.
[Kevin] And this one is
for sale?
[Kevin C] Yes, it is.
Yeah, this will cross
the block tomorrow.
[Kevin] Okay.
[Kevin C]
In the past 12 months,
there have been
three of the 50
-that have come up for sale.
-Really?
One sold at Amelia Island.
I believe it was
-somewhere around
$17, $18 million.
-[Dave] Mm-hmm.
And then there was
a similar car
with racing history
that sold at Monterey
in August of this year.
However, it didn't have
the enclosed headlights.
And that car sold
post auction,
somewhere 8 to 10 million.
-Wow.
-So this closed headlight
business is really...
-It's a crazy phenomena.
-More desirable. Mm-hmm.
So this room... seems to be
a little bit out
of my price range.
Closed headlights or not.
[Dave] We're in Florida
at one of the biggest auctions
in America.
[rock music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
[Dave] This is
absolutely crazy.
There's so many cars here,
and it seems like
every minute or so,
another car gets hammered away
and goes out to somebody else
as a new owner.
They have a lot
of bidders in the room,
and there's a lot of people
also online and on the phones.
[rock music continues playing]
[Dave] This is
a big deal auction,
and that's great,
because we have
a big deal car.
[rock music playing]
And what about
this crazy race car back here?
The one that started it all.
[Kevin C] Oh, this is
a spectacular piece.
-It's called a 410 Sport.
-[Kevin] Okay.
[Kevin C] And it was
built in 1955.
Part of what's so unique
about this car,
besides there only being
two factory team cars
like this,
is the people
that raced the car.
Juan Fangio,
Eugenio Castellotti,
Carroll Shelby,
-Richie Ginther.
-Wow.
All these big names
that sat in that seat.
-So just to sit in that seat
behind the wheel is...
-[Dave] Wow.
[Kevin C]
...a bit of a thrill.
And you'll notice too, the 98,
that's an homage
to Carroll Shelby.
This was part
of his inspiration
for the Cobra.
I was just going to say
that you can see
a lot of things
-that look Cobra-esque
in this car.
-Yes.
I think that's the right way
to say that.
[Kevin C] The engine's
pretty spectacular.
And not only is it 4.9 liters,
but it's a dry sump,
-which was
a big deal back then.
-[Dave] Mm-hmm.
It has
three two-throat carburetors,
but it uses 24 spark plugs.
That's part of the reason
that the hood bends over
the fender line, if you will.
So you have access,
'cause one set of plugs goes
-on the inside of the vehicle.
-We were just talking
about that.
Oh, really?
And the other set
of plugs goes
-underneath the headers.
-Oh.
We were talking about
how the hood was,
and I was like,
-"Well, it has to be..."
-[Dave] It's
a very unique shape.
-[Kevin C] Yeah.
-"It has to be a shape
to service something
in a race
or something like that."
-And that makes total sense
now that you brought that up.
-Exactly.
[Dave] This is
an aluminum body?
-[Kevin C] Yes, it is.
-[Dave] It is.
-[Kevin] It's beautiful.
-So you can tell
how delicate they are,
'cause you can see the lumps
all over the back of the car.
[Kevin] Oh, yeah.
-This looks like a bag
of marbles. That's crazy.
-[Dave] Yeah. Uh-huh.
What kind of speeds
did this car see?
Um, this car, um...
I just...
I don't know precisely,
but I'm speculating
based on the power
to weight ratio and so forth,
it's probably somewhere
around 180 miles an hour.
-Really?
-The biggest thing
at that point was
trying to keep the front end
on the ground
'cause we hadn't gotten
into the development
-of aerodynamics...
-Aerodynamics and downforce.
[Kevin] That's
a beautiful car.
-[Dave] It is
absolutely beautiful.
-[Kevin C] Isn't it?
It's timeless.
[Dave] That's gorgeous.
Well, thank you so much
-for sharing
all your information with us.
-Yeah, this is awesome.
-We really appreciate it.
-Yeah.
Appreciate your time, Kevin.
This has been awesome.
-Thank you very much.
-You're welcome, Dave.
-Thank you. It was a pleasure.
-You're welcome, Kevin.
Take it easy.
Enjoy the auctions.
-Thank you.
-Hey, we got to go...
I got to go buy something.
[Dave chuckles]
Come on, Kev.
Don't be so tight.
You don't want to spend
$18 million on a Ferrari?
[scoffs]
Maybe we should look
a little bit more reasonable
to the price range
that you and I both have.
[rock music playing]
[Dave] Now,
this tent actually looks
a little bit more
like Kevin's speed.
This is... This just
says Kevin's...
-This is Kevin's tent?
-...Kevin's tent.
Look, there's square bodies.
There's a ton of Pontiacs.
[Dave] Are you going
to bid on something?
-[Kevin] I might. I might.
-Are you thinking?
I have a bidder's pass now.
[Dave chuckles]
[high-pitched]
I'm a real bidder now.
[both laugh]
-[rock music playing]
-[Kevin] Yo, look at this.
This is right up my alley.
It's black.
[Dave] It's down.
-It's nice. You know what?
-It's down.
[Dave] It's not so nice
that it'd probably, like,
set you back, like, 20 years.
-You know what I mean?
-Yeah.
-[Kevin] It's a nice truck.
-It's straight. It's clean.
So what makes you
-so in love with
this particular body style?
-I think...
-Or this truck?
-Well, it's not maybe
that this truck is like,
'cause I think that it's nice,
but it's not over nice.
Does that make sense?
You wouldn't be worried
about driving the truck.
Exactly. And people...
and like, they haven't
gone too far.
Like, so I feel like
this truck would go
for a fair price,
'cause it's not
overdone, right?
[Dave] Okay, I'm going
to ask you right now.
What do you think
this truck would go for?
[sighs]
You're probably... Every bit
of 25-30K, if not more.
-I think...
-I think you're
in about the ballpark.
...the one that says,
"Hey, maybe you can buy this"
tries to stay, like,
in the lower 25-30,
but it could go for more.
You'd kick the door down
and go, "I'll go 32!"
Ooh, I don't know about that.
Well, you go 32,
you might as well go 33.
-You're almost there. At 33--
-Because you know me.
Don't we do this
for like the half?
Yeah, half.
[Dave chuckles]
-'Cause you know me, I'm just
looking for a good deal.
-Right.
[Kevin] It goes
tomorrow morning.
-We'll see
if I get here in time.
-All right.
As you guys know,
I'm a fan of trucks.
I'm a fan of big trucks.
This very well could be
the one right here.
[rock music playing]
[instrumental
drum music playing]
[Dave] Can we help you?
I'm sorry, buddy.
-I didn't see the sign.
-[Dave laughs]
It says not to touch.
Oh, no. You're okay
to touch, but--
Totally touched.
I think
all the signs say "for sale."
For sale, that's what it was.
Our friends
Dave Kindig, KevDogg.
Bitchin' Rides, f course.
So good to see you guys.
KevDogg, how has
your experience been
here at Mecum Auctions?
I mean, look at the crowd
you guys have drawn.
This is pretty cool.
Oh, this is amazing.
I mean, being in Florida
in January, like, come on,
it doesn't get
any better than this.
How about you, man?
How's your experience
at Mecum been?
Well, it's been great
'cause it's not snowing, A.
B, wonderful people,
cars everywhere,
great vibe.
The auction's been
doing really well.
And we're just excited to see
what this car is going to do.
What are you expecting
this to bring?
Oh, I never jinx myself.
We're going to the moon, sir.
I'd like to see you
up there with us.
But no, it's... you know,
they're just wonderful cars.
The opportunity to be able
to get one a lot sooner
than if you were to order one.
It's here today.
You can have it
this afternoon.
-This is a low number.
-It just takes a high bidder.
So this is a very low number,
number five.
Great clients.
One of my very
personal favorites...
I think I say that
every time I say
about a color combination,
but the Cha-ching Silver
and the Auburn Red is
just so classy.
It's a great package
and it's a wonderful car.
And it's going to go
to a good home,
I'm sure of it.
[Chris] I'll tell you what,
sitting in there was
much more comfortable
than sitting in a traditional,
un-restored,
and unmodified 1953.
So, good on you, man.
That was a trick question,
by the way.
I know you never talk numbers.
I was trying to get you
to say something about it.
I never.
KevDogg, Dave Kindig,
Bitchin' Rides,
thank you guys for being here.
[rock music playing]
[Kevin] We're here
at the Mecum auction
in Kissimmee, Florida,
selling Don's CF1.
It's been a great atmosphere,
great people,
and some really cool cars.
And we may have stumbled upon
what I think may be
my favorite tent.
We got trucks, square bodies,
Pontiacs.
I think there's
a Cadillac in here.
We do have a couple hours
before the CF1 goes
across the auction block.
I think I can find
something in here.
Am I tripping?
-Or are those lit?
-Those are lit.
[Dave] Weird.
-Do I like that?
-It's like one
of those things.
It's like something
you never knew you needed
until you saw it.
[chuckles]
-And then you figure out--
-And then you still realize
that you didn't need it.
[Dave] It's got
a Sparc Industries
steering wheel.
It's a '66?
-What year is this one?
-'66, you're right.
How can you tell?
[Dave] I just guessed,
honestly.
[Kevin laughs]
I was like, "How do you tell
from the back?"
Well, it wasn't a split,
and so I was just
taking the shot.
-I'm clairvoyant, too.
I actually...
-[Kevin laughs]
Do you want
the winning lottery numbers?
Oh, see, look.
I think this one, see?
Look at this one.
[Dave] Well, this is
all original paint, too.
[Kevin] Oh, I know.
This is cool.
$55,000.
[Dave] It only bid
up to $55,000.
-[Kevin] They wanted more.
-Yeah, they want more.
Nut and bolt restoration.
Except for the paint.
Obviously.
But that's what's
crazy about this.
Walking over here
from 20-25 feet away,
-you're like, "It's amazing."
-Right.
And then you get close,
and you're like,
"Oh, this is unrestored."
Well, the only
unfortunate thing is
if you weren't
the original guy
that's had this
forever and ever,
-there's stories behind
every one of those scratches.
-Oh, yeah.
The garage door coming down
to the middle of the roof.
[Kevin]
And somebody touching it up,
-you can see the ring.
-Uh-huh. Yep.
And then the dents
on the back,
probably parked next
to a basketball court.
Cool stuff.
That is cool stuff.
-[Dave] It is a cool car.
-That's a cool car.
[Dave] I do like it.
-[Kevin] Is this all original?
-I'm not sure this will fit
in my garage.
It looks like it is, yeah.
These big cars, dude.
You know why I like
these big cars?
-[Dave] Why is that?
-Because you could put
the bump in the trunk.
You could put the bump
in the trunk.
-I'm not sure...
-Come on, Dave, let's go
look at some Pontiacs.
-[Dave] Yeah, maybe something
with some bump in the trunk.
-Yeah.
[rock music playing]
[Dave] I'm actually
really excited.
Look at this one.
-[Dave] So you actually are...
-I could be the bandit.
I think you're kind of pumped
on getting a car.
-Yeah.
-I like this in you.
-Yeah.
-I haven't seen
this much excitement
since the last car
we finished.
-The last car we finished?
Like, as a shop?
-Yeah. Yeah.
-Oh, cool.
-Speaking of that,
I wonder... Go ahead
and take a look at this thing.
Look at these seats, dude.
But while you're thinking
about all of this,
think about
the amount of money
you could buy
one of these for,
how much of your Suburban
would actually get finished.
I see what you guys did there.
Who set you up with that?
Nobody set me up
with anything.
I'm just doing the quick math.
I'm pretty sharp.
Look at this...
Look at this wagon.
-Let's look at this Nomad.
-Oh, yeah.
So change the subject.
That's what I would do.
[both laugh]
[Dave] That is cool.
-[Kevin] Is it chopped?
-Yeah, they chopped it.
Has to be chopped.
-It's the triple nickel.
-Hey.
-[Dave] Huh?
-There's no hinges back here.
Oh, look.
-They put it together,
and it's a full hatch.
-Oh!
That's trick.
[Kevin] That's a great idea.
[Dave] That's not bad.
I'm not sure...
-You're not sure what?
-...if it's chopped.
It looks chopped.
But it doesn't say
it's chopped in here.
I don't think it's chopped.
It's not chopped.
[Kevin] Hey, Dave.
What if that one's chopped
next to it?
Touche.
[both laugh]
[Dave] Some people say meters.
Some people say inches,
feet, whatever.
But me, I like
the Kindig method.
Just a quick measurement.
Elbow to there.
Elbow to there.
It's not chopped.
Unless they're both chopped,
and then I'll just look
like a big jackass.
[both laugh]
[man] This belongs to a buddy
of mine, Rick Treeworthy.
-We're going to buy it.
-Huh?
-I'm going to buy this one.
-You got it.
-[Dave] This is selling
on Sunday, then?
-[man] Yeah.
[Kevin] No, I won't be here.
[indistinct conversation]
Here, give me
your credit card.
I'll get that done.
[Dave] Credit?
Credit makes enemies.
Let's be friends.
Give him cash.
I still need to know,
is this chopped or not?
Were they both his?
All 50... 60 of them here.
Oh, so this could have been
chopped, too, then, huh?
-[man] Well,
he just buys them.
-[Kevin] I'm just kidding.
I still got my tape measure.
[man speaks indistinctly]
[chuckles]
[country music playing]
[Dave] '34 Cadillac.
[Kevin] Dude, you know
what they say, bro.
Nothing drives
like a Cadillac.
Oh, it's a two-door.
[Dave] I know. That's what...
That's just different.
It's just cool.
Hey, another rumble seat.
We can take a ride together.
-[Kevin] We can rumble around.
-Rumble on.
[snickers]
-[Kevin] That's cool.
-Dude, there's a b*mb
down there. Caddy, '49-'51.
Oh, that's my jam.
-[Dave] This is like Cadzilla.
-Oh.
It looks like
they've upgraded
some stuff in here.
[Kevin] How much do you think
this car's worth?
It's got a third brake light.
[Dave] How much do I think
the car would sell for?
What would I pay for this car?
[Kevin] What would
you pay for it?
No, no, you know what?
I don't want to go there.
'Cause I'm a guy
that's always looking
for a good deal,
-so you don't want
to upset anybody.
-Mm-hmm.
I mean, it's definitely
an older build,
but one of these would
be really kick-a*s.
But I'll just
tell you right now.
For what you would
probably pay for this one,
what they believe
the car would be worth,
the stuff
that's already been done,
-you'd be, my opinion...
-You'd be redoing.
...I would be redoing
the whole car.
I'd probably find one
that hadn't been touched
and just start...
'Cause it's obviously...
Somebody's messed
with the suspension.
The wheel offset is
either super wrong.
Or it's
on a different chassis.
Or it's
on a different chassis, yeah.
And I'm sure we could probably
read up a little bit more,
but it's cutting
into my beer time.
It's really cool.
I love this body style.
-[Kevin] Oh, I do too.
-The visor could go...
I've always wanted that.
Anyone in TV land that wants
to get one of these built,
please bring it
to Kindig-It Design
at 164 East Hill Avenue.
In eight years.
-In eight years.
-Salt Lake City.
In eight years.
-Okay, let's get
out of here. It's hot.
-[Dave chuckles]
And it's about
to get a lot hotter.
You know why?
'Cause it's our time
up on the block
coming up very soon.
-[indistinct conversation]
-[auctioneer speaking
indistinctly]
[Dave] We've been watching
a lot of these cars go
over the block,
and I might be
sweating a little bit.
[auctioneer speaking
indistinctly]...$350,000.
[auctioneer speaking
indistinctly]...350.
Close bid. 325.
And the bid goes on.
[Dave] When they say
"The bid goes on",
that means
that there's a reserve
on that particular lot number.
[auctioneer] And 130 to bid.
Closed bid. $120,000.
The bid goes on.
[Dave] That means
that you can still negotiate
and try and buy it,
and sometimes they just
drop the reserve.
[auctioneer] Last call.
Closed bid. $75,000.
The bid goes on.
Don is selling his car
at no reserve,
so when it hammers,
it is what it is.
I think that he has an idea
of where he wants to be.
I certainly just am excited
to go to the moon,
and it is what it is.
Did I already say
"It is what it is"?
Well, I must be nervous.
It's finally our turn
up on the auction block,
and well, here we go.
It's number five
of the Kindig-It Design
CF1 Roaster,
custom-built
by Kindig-It Designs.
It's gonna be an automatic
with vintage year.
Ladies and gentlemen,
this was built by Dave Kindig
and KevDogg of Bitchin' Rides,
selling at no reserve.
[auctioneer] All right,
lookie here now.
Lookie, lookie, lookie.
-[auctioneer speaks
indistinctly]
-[Dave] Hey.
[auctioneer] It's 700. 500.
[auctioneer speaks
indistinctly]
says the man,
it sells at no reserve!
All right, don't mess around.
[auctioneer speaks
indistinctly]
-Hundred and fifty.
-Two!
Two hundred. 50! And 300.
[auctioneer speaking
indistinctly]
[tense music playing]
[Dave] These things
just start out fast
and slow way down
and then speed up again.
They can
start out really fast,
slow down and never come back.
You never know.
[auctioneer speaks
indistinctly]
[tense music playing]
[Dave] It's finally our turn
up on the auction block,
and, well, here we go.
[announcer] It's number five
of the Kindig-It Design
CF1 Roaster,
selling at no reserve.
As with anything worthwhile,
there is always a risk.
Selling this car
at no reserve,
obviously there's a risk.
-[auctioneer speaking
indistinctly]...150!
-Two!
Two hundred. 50!
These things can
start out fast
and slow way down,
and then speed up again.
They can start out
really fast, slow down,
and never come back.
You never know.
At 300!
[speaking indistinctly]
[Dave] Kevin's trying
to pump up the crowd.
[auctioneer continues
indistinctly]
[Dave] I'm really hoping
it doesn't stall out.
[tense music playing]
Can anybody please...
anybody out there,
raise your hand?
[speaking indistinctly]
[continues indistinctly]
Just a motion.
Please.
[auctioneer] $300,000.
[continues indistinctly]
Three!
-Three-fifty! 400!
-[Kevin whoops]
Okay, I can take
a deep breath now
and I can breathe again.
Uh, we got momentum again.
[auctioneer] 500!
[continues indistinctly]
[indistinct conversation]
[Kevin] They got one
over here.
[whooping]
Five-seventy-five! 600-thou.
[continues indistinctly]
$600,000. 600 to bid.
[continues indistinctly]
Now 650.
And now 700!
-[Kevin whooping]
-[auctioneer] 650, 700!
[continues indistinctly]
-Seven hundred. Now 25!
-[whooping]
[auctioneer] At 725!
[continues indistinctly]
and awesome at the same time.
$725,000.
Anybody else?
Seven hundred. 725.
I have 725.
[continues indistinctly] 725!
[tense music playing]
[man] Sell it!
-Sold!
-[Kevin whooping]
[upbeat instrumental
rock music playing]
Thank you.
That's how you sell
a Kindig car.
[indistinct conversation]
[Dave] Well done.
Thank you very much.
[Kevin] All right. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you so much.
[Dave] That, my friend, is
how you sell a Kindig car.
-Awesome.
-[man] Thank you, Donnie.
Thank you.
Well done.
Woo!
I am over the moon.
This thing went
right over the moon.
I cannot believe it.
This is awesome.
This is great news
for Kindig-It Design,
and certainly
for Don and Terry.
[auctioneer speaking
indistinctly in background]
[man] Good job.
[indistinct conversation]
[woman] That was so awesome.
That is how you sell
a Kindig-It Design car.
Congratulations.
[Kevin] Overall,
the experience
at Mecum was amazing.
The car sold
for a lot of money.
Everyone's happy.
We got to spend
some time in Florida.
Burnouts were epic.
I had a great time.
-Who got it?
-[Dave] I have no idea.
Neither do I. Good job.
-Seven twenty-five.
-I know.
That's what
they should sell for.
[Dave cackles]
Dave, is the bar still open?
Kevin and I are so happy.
I know Don and Terry are
extremely happy.
And we've had
a hell of a great time
here at Kissimmee.
The lucky winner
of this car is
going to enjoy it so much.
Welcome to our family, baby.
You know what they say,
the auction's like
a roll of the dice.
You never know.
You could throw seven,
or you could throw yo.
Right?
That's a pretty good analogy.
And we threw a yo today.
We threw a yo
with a hundred on it.
Yeah, that's what
I'm talking about.
We yo'd out
on the craps tables.
Cheers.
This auction was amazing.
Even though I didn't find
something that fit my fancy,
-I've seen some
of the rarest rare cars...
-Right?
[Kevin]... go through
the auction.
I've seen
so many different cars.
-This is like
a 4,500 car car show.
-Right.
And the only thing
that I'm super bummed about is
that we have to go back
to the snow.
I think
my beer just got colder.
Yeah, touche.
-Cheers.
-Cheers.
-Cheers to the next one.
-[laughs]
