11x04 - In a Land Down Under

Post by bunniefuu »

I'm just wondering if we
could see some kangaroos.

Long time fans,
first time players
to be down here in Australia.

You guys have
a beautiful country.

You know
it's almost Christmas,

and I almost
started singing...

silver ba*ls.

- Kevin the Kiwi.
-Kevin the Kiwi.

Aw, really?

We just took an ugly
four door Chevy

and made it something,
you know.

What do you call it?
We call it a cooler.

-Cooler, yeah.
-An esky?

I'm taking these
words back home.

What does that say
on the award?

It says, "Cap Dingo's Choice."

When I look
at a blank canvas,
I see endless possibilities.

As the ideas come to mind,
the lines start
to fall into place.

And before you know it,
we have a bitchin' ride.

A bitchin ride
has intense colors.

Gorgeous.

...performance...

It's fantastic.

...stance, wheels, sound.

There's one thing that makes
our cars stand out.

Ours are bitchin' rides.

-It never gets old.

I have a very interesting
phone call coming up.

A group of people
down in Adelaide, Australia,

are going to call us
and talk to us

about going down
for a huge car show

and the Adelaide 500
supercar V8 race.

Awesome.

Mel and Liam,
how are you guys?

-Hi, how you doing?
-How you doing, guys?

I'm very good.
What time is it there?

It's nine o'clock
in the morning.

Good morning!

Which morning?

- Friday.
-It's Friday morning here.

Oh, they beat us to Friday.

Hey, can you give me
the winning numbers?

There's a big lottery
that happened yester--

-Sorry. Never mind.
- Hang on.

I'll go check.

Okay, now that we've
got all the Australian
jokes out of the way,

it's great to meet you, too.

Thank you.
So we've got some...

a couple of letters
back and forth.

Please tell me exactly
what it is you're
wanting to do.

Australia's largest
domestic motorsport event.

-Wow!
-That's cool.

We'll have like,

-Wow!
-So it'd be awesome to have
you guys with us.

And to show you
around a little bit
of our small town of Adelaide

and introduce you to some
of the really cool things.

Um, I don't know if you know,
but the two cars
that race for us,

the supercars,
they're Camaros and Mustangs.

Oh, really?

I would've thought they were
Falcons and Holdens.

Why am I-- I guess
I'm not that hip
on motorsports at this moment.

Do the Camaros normally win?

Stop!

-Camaro... Well...
-Actually, most of the time.

-Most of the time, yeah.
-That's what
I'm talking about.

So... tell me
a little bit more
about the show cars.

So, we'd love to put
a custom car show together.

So we've got some
great custom cars
down here in Australia.

Some really passionate,
passionate guys
that build cars.

-We've got a few
big shows here, you know.
-Yeah.

We've always had
car shows at our event,

but we really want
to elevate it this year.

When we think of car shows,
who's the best in the world?

And you guys
popped to mind straightaway,
so we had to reach out.

Awesome.

Potentially, if we could
call it Kinding Custom
Car Show,

even get a couple of your cars
down to Australia,

if that was of interest.

What do you guys
think of that idea?

I think that'd be really cool.

Well, I got one that's...
that could go.

We could take
the "Family Affair"
Corvette down.

Okay.

-Maybe see if we--
-We would love the
"Family Affair".

-Really.
-It'd be nice.

That would be really cool.

Do we just
drive 'em down there?

There's an ocean
between us.

Yeah. Um, no.

You know,
it's not a done deal yet,
but if it's anything like

what they're making
it out to be,

this could be a really
great opportunity.

Just the little bit that I've
got right now, I'm in, I'm in,
I'm in, I'm in.

I'm just wondering if we
could see some kangaroos.

-And other than that,
I am in 100%.

If we could have
you guys on board,

um, it would just
make the event

such a special event for us.

I've never been to Australia.
Neither has Kevin.

I've always heard
how crazy you guys
are about cars.

And I think this would be
just a great
opportunity for us

to go down
and show off what we do,

give people an opportunity
to see a couple of our cars.

More importantly, to be a part
of your culture
and check out the stuff.

And get Kevin strapped
on to a kangaroo
for a ride and box--

-It sounds like
it's a bunch of wins.
-It's a win-win-win, really.

Liam, Mel, we're in.

Count us in.
Whatever we gotta do...

-we would love to be there.
-That's awesome.

We're going to Adelaide, baby!

Well, here's to being
in Australia
for the very first time.

And at the VAILO Adelaide 500.

-Unbelievable, right?
-Unbelievable.

We're here in Australia.
My very first time,
by the way.

Everybody is rolling out
the green carpets, not red.

I have never seen
my face posted up
so many times.

You haven't been
to that many post office...

Or wanted posters.

Uh, I think it's time
to go check out.

-Let's see what's here.
-Let's check it out.

-Wow, look at all
these great cars.
-Look at this.

Look how serious you look.

I am serious.

We're gonna have a great time.
Everything looks wonderful.

Long flight, but we're here.

It's taking my breath away.

This place is not only
car crazy,

but they are Kindig crazy.

We're very excited to be here,
you guys.

First time, longtime fans,
first time players
to be down here in Australia.

You guys have
a beautiful country
and wonderful, warm people.

And we're so excited
to have met

each and every one
of you so far

and looking forward
to meeting everybody else.

This is a wonderful
opportunity for us
to come down here

and show off our talents
and our crew's
love and passion for cars.

I am excited to see everything
and what everyone's brought.

And again,
thanks for all the hospitality

to bring me
and Dave over here.

It's been...
It's been awesome.

-Thank you.
-Thank you.

Okay,
now it's time to check out

what the car vibe here
in this country is all about.

-Is this yours?
- Certainly is.

-Wow. This is wonderful.
-How is it going?

Nice to meet you. How are you?

-Pleasure. Pleasure.
-Very nice to meet you.

- This is cool.
-We got a chance to look at
this last night a little bit.

Every time I come back
and look at this,

there's another thing
that I catch.

Like, I just catch
the gold on the bumper.

-Did you see that? The strip.
-Yeah.

I didn't notice
that last night.

What's your favorite
part of the truck?

-Probably the seats.
-The seats?

I was gonna ask about that.

I love the seats
with the shocks in the front.

Is that an actual leaf spring,
or is it just something
that's decorative?

Something I made up,
which, actually, you know,
it's actually spring.

It is spring steel.
So you can you can sit on it.

-It does move.
-It's so cool.

Shocks are there just
to stop the bounce,

'cause when you
drive down the road.

So this cab over
is super clean, super trick.

But you know what?
I'm drawn to the way
that he mounted his seat.

It's super cool. Like,
leaf spring design that's got
two shocks in the front.

It can't get
no better than that.

So, do you get this a truck
down the road?

I hope so. I still haven't
taken it for a ride,
but I'm ready to go.

Once you make something
a bit smaller,

then maybe I'll be
a bit more comfortable.

To be fair,
it's a little high up.

Yeah. He built one of the...

probably the bigger vehicles
in this tent, right?

This thing
is very well done.

The father and daughter team
that actually
put this together

has been hanging out with us,
showing all
of the details to us.

This is really cool.

This literally is something
I would love
to build back in the States.

-All right. So nice
to meet you.
-Cheers, guys.

Very nice to meet you guys.

-Enjoy.
-Nice to meet you.

-Beautiful.
-Enjoy the show.

-Will do.
-Unbelievable.

-Beautiful.
-I love that color, too.

Look at this.

- Is this yours?
- Yes, it is.

Wow. This is amazing.

Really cool. How are you?

Good. Nice to see ya.

So, they don't do much
of this style of stuff
in the U.S.

Which I think that anybody
that's into hot rods, I mean,

really, at the end of the day,
you kind of just run
what you've brung.

That's kind of what
it seems down here,

doing a straight six with a--
Is that a 871 or 671?

- 471.
-It is 471.

Unbelievable, though.

- It just
looks big because...
-It is big.

So... So you don't see a lot
of this conversion here?

Or is common?
That makes it even cooler.

Like I said, kind of have
your take on it.

It's a little bit different.
It's not the same.

I mean, I love V8.
Don't get me wrong.

But when you look
at something like this,

-it's just different
and awesome.
- Right.

Look at that.

-Oh, I didn't see that.
-That's cool.

You guys'
ingenuity out here
is just second to none.

Can we copy this?

They don't call it copying.
They call it research.

That's cool!

So far, Australia's got
home run after home run.

These cars are off the hook.

-Beautiful.
-Best of luck.

So nice to meet you guys.

Great to meet you guys.
Thank you.

-Best of luck.
-Thank you.

Mad Max eat your heart out.

There's a lot of cars
that really look familiar
from the U.S.

There's a lot of cars here
that don't look anything
like I've ever seen.

Wow, look at this thing.

This is our first time
to Australia.

And to be honest with you,
as I understand, I think

this is the best place
to be in Australia.

So far, we've had
such a great time

down here in Australia.

But we're
just getting started.

Wow, look at this thing.

What is this?
Is it like an MG?

-No, I think it's a...
-Are you sure?

I think it's like a '50s...

I think this is a Holden.

I think when
you're in Australia

-and you don't know
what the car is...
-Pretty sure it's a Holden.

And the reason I say that
is I think somebody said that

that other car,
the concept car,

started out based
on this body style.

-Oh, really?
-Mm-hmm.

Which is unbelievable.

If you really look
at that concept car,

it's just ridiculous,
and that is a Holden.

So, some built
especially, fuelies,

like how Frenched-in
the headlights

and painted
the headlight ring.

That's actually
a really clean touch.

-Screws, you like that.
-I love that. I love it.

-The fit and finish
is really nice stuff.
-Yeah, I like it.

This building in particular,
was set up for home run
after a home run.

Beautiful.

'57.

- Eye candy.
Is this yours?
-Yeah.

I really like the way
that the carpet's
done under the seat.

Did you do a satin
finished stainless header?

Is that what's on there?

-It is stainless and then.
-Satin finished.

-Heat coating.
-Okay. Okay.

I love
the engine plate, Dave,
if you look.

-Yeah, that's so...
-So much nicer than trying
to get a traditional mount

and then get
the exhaust around it.

-Almost impossible, right?
- Yeah.

So you go to the engine plate
and you pull the mount

-right off the front?
-See the mount?

Yeah. It's beautiful.

You know,
it's almost Christmas,

and I almost
started singing...

silver ba*ls.

Silver ba*ls?

Yeah, that was just a...

Okay, so Dave's now moved
from Dad jokes
to middle school jokes.

-Come on, man.
-Yeah, I got it. That's...

You know how many
of your Dad jokes...

Try the roo chops.
They're wonderful.

-We'll be here all weekend.
-Roo chops.

-Get out of here.

I thought we were
gonna progress,

but we seem to be regressing.

Thanks for bringing
it out for us.

Wonderful to meet you.
Thank you.

Nice to meet you.

- Nice to meet you.
- Thank you very much.

Cheers.

All right. There's my speed.

How you doing? Is this you?

-Yep.
-Beautiful.

This is awesome.
This is awesome.

You know, I've been
eyeballing this Porsche
since we got here,

and I got a ton
of questions about it.

The engine
is air cooled, right?

-No, it's water cooled.
-It is water cooled?

And it's hidden
in the radiator.
I can show you where that is.

Everything in this car
is hidden.

We found we've got more power

-with the water cooled
than we did with the...
-Really?

We make this. We cast
this block ourselves
from start.

-Really?
-Everything on this car
we've made ourselves.

Two hundred horsepower...

-Really?
-...without the nitrous.

Oh, yeah.
You got to have nitrous.
Why wouldn't ya?

if you're not running
nitrous in your hot rod,

well, I guess you're just not
at the top of the peak.

You see these ducts here?

-Yes.
-That brings the air
into the radiators here.

If you look at the back,
it's just in here.

- We're okay
to step on this?
- Yeah, absolutely.

Fins out there.
Look inside here.

Right here, that's all engine
in the back there.

And then, obviously,
so you have your intake
and exhaust valves up here,

and then what controls?

So is there a push rod
that goes back down

-and runs off of the crank?
-Correct. A little
crank in the middle.

Wow!

Three cylinder
and the exhaust
is printed Inconel.

Every nut and bolt on this car
is either Inconel,
titanium or aluminum.

-This is printed.
- It's printed.

- This is so cool.
-Everything that we've done,

it weighs sort of 650 kilos.

And it's over 200 horsepower
without the nitrous.

Honestly, we've only looked
at a handful of cars, Dave,

but the theme
that we're noticing,

here in Australia
for the first time
is the details.

It's all welded
on the inside.

The roll cage is welded
through the car.

- Unbelievable.
- See that button
next to the gauge?

- Yes.
-That's like the old aircraft.

When you turn it off,
it goes...

Like piston, like,
lets the air out of it.

This is a really
well done 356 Outlaw.

This car has it top to bottom,
inside and out.

And they're not just
blowing kisses
at this bad boy.

They actually drive it.

Yeah. It's beautiful.
It's laid out really nice.

- Thank you, man.
-Craftsmanship's very nice.

- Wonderful.
- Good job.

Nice to meet you.
Thank you. Thank you.

-See you, buddy.
-Cheers.

How's it going?

- This is beautiful.
-The word on the streets is,

from what I heard,
this is probably
one of the nicest

street rods in Australia.

-Is that true?
- Hey,
I'm pretty humble. Yeah.

It's beautiful.

We just took an ugly
four-door Chevy and made
it something, you know.

In reality, it may be.

But this thing is pretty
amazing by anyone's standards.

It's beautiful.
It's beautiful.

I think that's what
caught our eyes.

You know, we do a lot
of that kind of stuff

to a lot of the parts
that we put on the car
are detail.

I mean, and so it really
caught our eye.

You see CNC machine
in the bumper bar brackets.

And, the car's all steel,
all original.

File finished, lead loaded.
Like we haven't
trowelled it full of filler.

You know, I've hand-made
all the steps

and hand fabricated
all the bonnet sides

and pull maxed them
and done all those things.

And the interior,
like if we go,

I've handmade
the whole interior.

The whole roof
is one piece in the car.

So it goes through.

You just did
such an amazing job
on all the stuff.

Like you said,
very, very, very detailed.

I mean, really,
that's what it's about.

- Spot on.
-The color is...

-Beautiful.
-The flop and the metallic
and all the things going on,

it's just... you said
the other side of the car

is completely different
than this side.

My best employee, so he's 68.

He's never had a car.

This particular builder
has a lifelong employee that's
been there since day one.

And if you ain't got a guy
like this in your shop,

well, you're just maybe
missing the link.

The last 20 cars
out of my shop

-wouldn't have existed
without your best employee.
-Right.

And then I just said,
"It's your turn, mate.
We've got to make it happen."

This is what you'd do it for.

It's not for a trophy.

-That stuff doesn't drive me.
-Right.

It's the trip
and the traveling--

-The experience.
-It's the experience.

These are car guys
through and through.

The late nights,
whatever it takes,
they just get the job done.

And this stuff is amazing.

This is beautiful work.

-It is beautiful.
-Unbelievable.

How cool is this?

For the first time
ever in Australia,

the guys from
Kindig Customs show,
Dave and Kevin.

For my first trip to Australia

we are having
such a great time.

Getting great opportunities
to not only just see cars,

but meet some great people.

So what the hell
is this thing anyway?

I have no idea.

From the outside,
this looks like a true-blue
American muscle car.

One problem, though.

I've never seen a car
like this before.

-How are you?
-Amazing.

Good to see you guys.
How are you?

This is beautiful.
Are you the builder and owner?

Owner, paint and body.

Very cool.
What are we looking?
We have no idea what this is.

They don't sell
these in the U.S.

-No. 1969 Holden Monaro.
- '69.

- So, like a GM,
- So it would be GM,
unibody Car V8.

- Yeah.
-So what's
all been done to it?

This is the hardest
thing that we see.

We don't even know
what it looked like.

It's a subtle build.
So, lot of smoothing...

You know, neatening up,
deleting a little bit
here and there.

Like street machining
was years ago.

Really? Okay.

It's cool.
So it has like that,
road race kind of look to it.

- Yeah.
- You know,
it has...

- Loos like pro touring.
-Pro touring.

With this
particular car,
they made just small changes,

but they made huge
differences in the build.

It's just weird?
I mean, for us,

I say, weird,
not that it's an odd thing,

but it is odd to us
because we don't
have these cars.

So we don't know
what to compare it to.

We're looking like,

the body shape
or the roof rail

and how the top
is slightly laid back

and the curve
to the back window

and the quarters,
the fender flares.

I mean, looking at all these
different shapes and things,

which really worked well.
But I don't know...

I see some Nova.
I see some Chevelle.
I see some Camaro.

Guys, it's just got
a little bit of everything.

Nice!

I was gonna say,
it has some Nova features.

- Yeah.
-It kind of does.

It has some Camaro feature,
some Nova.

It has a-- It's like a mitt.
I call it a mutt.

This is one
of those cars
that when you look at it,

you know that when
they went into this,
they had a set plan.

They knew exactly
what they were doing.

-That's awesome.
- That gets used.

-That's cool.
-As they should.

-That's what they're for.
So...
-Exactly.

Thanks for bringing it out.
We really appreciate
talking to you.

Thank you so much.
It's wonderful.

- Great car.
-Beautiful.

Wow. What-- Tell me.
What do you
think about Australia?

Absolutely amazing.

The car culture here
is alive and well.

-This one. Look at this.
-Oh.

On this particular build,
every little box
has been checked.

This literally
is a very serious,
full-on show car.

Much like what you would
see in the U.S. as a Ridler
or even a Slonaker.

This is absolutely beautiful.

-Thank you, sir.
-Congratulations.

-This car is just amazing.
- What'd you do to it?

Just a bit of restoring.

-And we had
a bit of a go at it.

This is amazing.

Yeah, originally like,
bloody Google got me
and I was online Googling,

found the car's engine.

And I thought, "Yeah,
I bought the engine,
now for the car."

And then found the car.
And we went from there.

-So...
-Wow!

Turned to be a really clean,
elite level, you know.

So, and that was part of that.

And it all sort of worked
from there back.

It's a really,
really well built...
very well built.

I really wanted the car
to be at that level

where it didn't matter
where you looked.

Whether you pull the front
bumper off or whatever,

it's been chopped or buffed.

Same as the exterior
of the car,
and that is something

-that I wanted to be
done perfectly.
-Right.

And even the interior
in there,

I really wanted
the interior to be finished
to the same level as the car.

So the car balanced from front
to back, inside outside

to that same classic,
elite custom level.

Tell us a little bit
about the suspension.

What is that?
Is that based off of something

you've modified
or is it all custom?

It's all custom made.
Everything is custom made.

You know, rack
and pinion steering,

apart from that,
it's all custom made.

If this was my car,
I'd leave it just
the way it is.

So let me
get this straight.

So you did a...

You did a Ford based engine

-with the Chevrolet
transmission.
-Yep.

-Difficult to get
a Ford transmission.
-Good job! Good job!

Take that back,
I'd move the steering wheel
to the other side of the car.

This is weird for me.

Other than that,
the car is perfect.

-Well, it's a beautiful thing.
-Absolutely wonderful.

Thank you so much
for bringing it out.

It's a wonderful car
to get to look at.

-Thanks a lot. Appreciate it.
-Neat, neat car.

-Congratulations.
-Thanks.

Take it easy.

Looking behind us,
there are people--

You guys are superstars.
You guys are rockstars.

I don't know what else to say.

It's just super surreal that
people are here to see us.

And it is just...

-I don't even know--
-Unbelievable.

-It's unbelievable.
-Yeah.

-Whoo!
-Hey, is this yours?

Yeah.

-How you doing?
-Awesome.

- This...
-How you done any burnouts?

Yeah, I've done
a few skids, yeah.

-Skids.
-It's pretty hard not to.

-I love it. I love it.
-You got a new term.

Who needs burnouts
or peel outs,

when you have skids
you can do?

What do you got under
the hood on this thing?

-What is that, LS?
-Yeah, Dart 430 cube.

-Okay.
-Yeah. 871.

-Yeah. It makes
-Awesome!

How long has this been done?
It's very clean.

The way it is,
nearly four years.

Four year, really?

So you really
have done a lot of pee--

-I'm sorry, skids with it.
- Yeah.

I love the color, too.

Because this is the problem
that we've been
running into here.

-We've never seen
this car before.
-Yeah.

So, what's...
what's been... So, it's like,
what's been customized

and what hasn't been
customized, you know?

The roof hasn't.

'Cause I, like,
look at this, like...

I look at this, like,
right here, like...

-There should be a seam there.
-...there used to be
a seam, right?

Yeah, there should be a seam
in the back.

These normally stop.
There's not one
across the back.

There's normally a heater box
and everything
on the firewall.

The firewall's
has been moved back 50 mil.

It's normally only, like,
a subframe chassis.

-It's a full chassis.
- Full chassis.

Full flat floor. Tubbed.
Full ink.

One with those coil levers.

Oh, look at that.

-That's awesome.

Great custom, great color.
I absolutely love this one.

Really like
the blue and black,

-a lot.
- Yeah,
I think it's beautiful.

- It really--
- But I...

The stripe is just simple,
but it's clean and nice.

With all of this,
instead of being, like,
a chrome...

-Yeah.
-...it makes it look
really cool.

That's, like,
a factory fill point,
which I wanted to keep.

- Hold on.
-So, then, you can
take this out

and put the parachute through.

Oh, okay. Oh, wow!

And the crazy thing
about, like, this stuff
is, like,

-you know, like,
this anodized aluminum.
- Mmm-hmm.

It's not fun
to work with.

- No.
-And it all just looks
super crisp and nice.

Dude, I know
that's just a nightmare.

There's so many details
on this car.

If you just walk past it once,
you're definitely gonna
miss something.

-Great job, man.
- Yeah, that's cool.

-I'll be back later
to get the keys.
-Awesome.

Now, tell me
what's going on here
this weekend?

There are incredible cars
on display.

Well, it's a four-wheel
super overload,

I think is the best way
to describe it.

And, of course, just getting
to know the people down here
a little bit better.

You know, I think
that's really what

kind of encompasses
the entire weekend.

It's like I'm at home.

Me, too. You know,
what's funny is, actually,
it's kind of making it, um...

come back to me
how much we used to do
graphics, multicolors,

flames and pinstripe.
You remember all that?

So, when I see trucks
like these,

It just takes me right back
to when I started
customizing cars.

I had a mini truck.
I was a mini trucker.

This is actually really cool.
I'm sitting here, taking in
all of the flame job,

and I remember
how many flame jobs
we did back in the days,

and, you know, doing
the overlap, different colors,
different textures.

-See the heavy
monster flake in there?
-Yeah.

And then,
the multicolored pinstripe.

The fade from one color
over another color,
back over the same color.

- Yeah.
- You know?

Remember, I did my dually
that color,

-the black, plain one?
-I'm looking inside the bed,

-it has the white.
- Oh, that's so cool.

-I didn't even notice that
until just now.
- Yeah.

-That's cool.
-Lot of detail on this thing.

And the dash
has all been painted.

So cool.

You did one like that
full-painted dash, didn't you?

-Didn't you have Zuzu
that way?
-No, I did my dually that way.

- Oh, that's right.
-'Cause Zuzu was tweed,
you know?

-Right.
-That's what you did
back then.

Yeah, look at this.
All of this stuff.

Firewall shaved off.

- Far out.
- Yeah,
that's super cool.

That's so cool.

Super cool.

Oh, look at the...
look at the steering wheel
and stuff, too.

And so, we would have
just called this a Toyota.

So I wonder
is this a Hilux here?

I think it's a Toyota.
I think it's a...

-I don't know,
would it be a...
-It is.

-It's a Hilux?
-Yeah.

I've seen this truck
in magazines before,
and here it is,

all the way around
the other side of the Earth.

-Take me right back
to my childhood.

-Picture me rolling.
-That's awesome.

You spend your life
around cars,

around the best cars
in the world.

What do you think
about supercars?

Some of the take
and some of the creativity
that they put into these,

it's like I said,

some of these things,
I would have never even
thought about.

I might be taking
some ideas back home.

-Is this yours?
- Yes, it is.

Wow, this is... What is this?

Well, this is
our iconic Falcon.

- It's a Falcon?
- Yeah.

- This is a Falcon?
- Yup.

So, that's based
on Ford?

- Ford, yes.
-Oh, okay.

The biggest question
for me is,

did the Ford Falcon
or did the Falcon in Australia
come first?

Chicken or the egg?

If Ford was ever to make
a Drag Pack Falcon
back in the day...

- Uh-huh.
-...this is what you got.

So, then,
you have stuffed
the biggest engine possible

-into the engine bank?
- Yes.

-With moving everything
out of the way.
- That is awesome!

There's nothing
really standard
about this one,

but it looks standard.

A lot of guys here
cut the front of the towers

and put a flat plate in there.

I didn't like that look.

-I wanted to keep it
factory-looking
- Stock-ish. Right.

So, we cut
the whole tower out,

took 70 mil
out of the back of it,
welded them back in.

But then, that pushed
all my steering

-and suspension out.
- Oh. Right.

So, then, I had to shorten
all the arms,

but I wanted
to keep them factory.
I didn't want any multitude

and aftermarket stuff.

-Oh, right.
-We shortened
the original arms

and brought all the wheels
back in,

sunk the wheel bearings in
to get the wheels
to come back in.

-But that's just... Yeah.

It's so crazy that, like,
you're throwing these
massive amounts of horsepower

-in these, like,
unibody cars, right?
-Right.

This is a lot of power
with not a lot of space.

So, are you...
You're fully tubbed then,
obviously, in the back here?

-Well, Vinnie tubbed the car.
-Okay.

So, well, I obviously
cut the tub out,
moved the tub over,

put a band in 'em.

But to get the wheel,
that tight wheel,

a lot of the guys
have to double it.

-Oh.
-And, then, you have...

-Yeah, this narrow dog leg
to a wide dog leg.

- Oh, I see. Okay. Yeah.
-I moved the dog leg forward
and cut the door.

-And put all the original
back in.
- Wow!

So, the dogleg got cut,
moved forward.

We moved the quarter back,
as well. So, the...

Center to the wheel,
back where it was
supposed to go.

That's exactly where it is,
'cause the fuel tank's
been narrowed.

-Cut the sink in half.
-Super clean.

Narrowed the tank,
'cause when I tubbed it,

I narrowed the boot floor
and raised the boot floor.

I do have the mufflers
at the back, but I didn't
wanna see them.

You went through
an awful lot of work
to keep the car looking

-basically stock.
-Yes.

So, this is truly
an Australian sleeper.

So, tell me, what makes
the best custom car?

What is it? What in particular
are you looking for?

You know, attention to detail,
color contrast, engineering.

The amount of work
that goes into our cars,

I understand very well,
'cause we're, you know,
invested into that.

So, to come down here
and see the same kind of work.

But what's really interesting,
and I think I speak
for both of us,

is a lot of these cars,
we don't get up there.

So, to see somebody else's
full custom takes

on cars that we've never
really experienced,

it's pretty cool
to actually just see that.

I've never seen so many
radical four-doors in my life.

Is this... is this yours?

No, mate. We built it.
My shop built it.

-Very cool.
-That is awesome.
That is awesome.

-So, we're a little more
familiar, I think, with this.
-Yes, 100%.

Now, this is a car
I'm very familiar with.

The '54?

-Yes, '54 sports coupe.
-Very cool.

I think the biggest question
that I have

is why so many carburetors?

Oh, something different.

-Why not?
-That's fair. That's fair.
That's fair.

Love the colors.
Love the wheels.

-They're Mike Curtis wheels.
-Oh, is that right?

-Yup. Yup. Very cool.
-That's nice. Beautiful.

Very cool.
Let's take a look around this.

That's a full-functioning
Esky. I put some beer in it.

That's awesome.
And what do you call it?
We call it a cooler.

- Well, cooler, yeah.
- Esky?

- Esky.
-I'm taking these words
back home.

- What is it?
- An Esky.

- Esky?
- Esky.

-Yeah.
- Esky. Oh, okay,
like an Eskimo box. Right.

Esky, short for Eskimo.
I love learning new words.

Believe it or not,
I'm quite the linguist.

My world is just expanding

right in front of your eyes.

Got a little pearl
in the roof, as well.

Yeah, pearl in the roof, yeah.

-That really ties it in
with the blue. That's cool.
-Yes.

Not too many
sports coupes over here.

- No.
- So, there's a few
pillars... Not the pillars.

The sports coupe,
there's not many over here.

-So...
-Beautiful! Yeah, I love...
love the color, too.

This car is clean,
classy, and custom.

Lots of great styling cues,
and it's done perfectly.

-All right. Well, again...
- Yeah, gorgeous.

-Congrats, man. This is...
-Thanks so much
for bringing it in.

-Wonderful car.
-Beautiful. It's beautiful.

No worries.

What we're gonna do
this time around

with the Q and A,
we're gonna have a little bit
of what we call

"Them Versus Us."

I've done some research
on the US versus Australian
car terms,

what you say and what we say.

So, let's start it off
by saying

you guys have a saying
in the US called
"parking lot."

-Is that right? Parking lot?
-Yeah, a parking lot.

-That's where you park
your car.
-Oh, is it?

-What do we say in Australia?
- Car park!

Car park!

Now, when you take
your car out,

you need to put
some fuel in it
before you go out cruising.

-Where do you go to do that?
-You go to a gas station.

Well,
what do we do in Australia?
What do we call it?

- Servo!
- Servo!

Servo?

Put an "O"
at the end of service station,

knock the rest,
we ain't got time for that.

It's servo.

All right. Now, you're inside
the car, you're driving along,

you wanna do a...
pull a cookie
or throw a U-bolt.

Yeah, I like that one.

What do you use
to turn the car around?

-What do you guys call it?
-The e-brake.

-No, no, no, no, no.
- What do we
call it?

Handbrake!

-Handbrake.
-The handbrake?

Well, that makes sense.
I'll give you that one.
I'll give you guys that one.

I like this one.
This one's a cool one.

Holding the wheel on

is a little nut.
What do you call that nut?

-Lug nuts.
- Lug nuts?

-Yeah.
- Now,
what do we call them?

- Wheel nuts!
- Wheel nuts!
'Cause that's what they are.

A quick disclaimer
on the next one,

I know that it is
not even a product
that's in your shop.

But what do you use
to smear across door handles

when you're really young
and you're not good
at crafting them?

-And it starts with a B,
and it's got an O.
-The body filler.

- What do you
call it?
-Bondo.

-Bondo?
- Bondo.

-I mean,
it's been called Bondo.
- Ready for this?

Nice and quiet. Really loud.
What do we call it?

- Bog!
-Bog.

-Oh, what?
- Bog.

-Bok?
-I can't even say that!

-B-O-G, bog.
-Bong?

- No, bog.
-Bog.

-Like fog, but bog.

You know,
like the full-drive tires--

I'm not...
I'm not following you guys.

-I'm outta here.

Car culture down here
is really what we came
down here for.

We have a lot of fans,
a lot of great friends,
actually, who live down here.

To be able to actually
come down here
and experience it,

see cars that we don't
ever get to see before.

But people
have the same passion
for those cars.

I think that's really
what's been one of
the funnest parts.

-Wouldn't you agree?
-100%.

So, this is actually
really close to a...

-Gtl.
-Yeah, a GTL. Right.

But the back window
is a lot taller.

Yeah, it's a bit different,
but it is still basically
the same style of unibody.

You know,
there's a lot of cars
that resemble

or just are cars
that we see back at home,
and belong back at home.

There is a little bit
of difference here.

No, this started off as a ute.

Oh, this was a ute.

This is a pretty fancy
little ute, if I say so.

So, that's why that top
looks so much different.

-But we cut it off
through the A-pillars.
- Right.

Took all
the ute body off.

Did the same just to that
and put it back on.

The doors are 287 mil longer.

How many inches is that?

I'm just gonna have to take
this guy's word for it.

I don't do metric.

It's about a foot
for you guys.

-What's that?
-287 mill is just under a foot
for you guys.

You said
there would be no math, man.
Come on.

-I had to work it out.
-You know why they don't sell
a Quarter Pounder here?

-'Cause of the metric system.
- They do sell
a Quarter Pounder.

Never mind.
Let's talk about the car.

"Hey, mate, I'll take
a 1.2 kilogram burger
with cheese, please."

I love how you guys
have got this.

It just looks
clean and smooth.

I love the door handle.

The color is awesome.

We like your door handles
that we came up with this.

- This is sweet. yeah.
-But we made it
a little different.

- No, that's--
-It was really easier to do.

- Well, yeah. Yeah.
-Yeah.

I think one of the biggest,
coolest things is, hot rodding
is an adaptive sport.

Basically, you take
what you got and you make it
cooler, right?

And they do exactly that
down here in Australia.

Well, we've noticed something,
actually, that is,

I think, a great tribute
to Australian craftsmen,

'cause you guys come up
with so many unique ideas

because you don't have,
necessarily, the same kind of

avenues that we have,

buying a lot of
different parts
that were just made.

-Yeah.
- So, you guys get
very ingenuitive

-and very crafty.
-Yeah.

There are engines,
and then there is this.

-Hi, love. How are you?
- Really good
meeting you.

- Wow!
- Twin turbos!

This car
has a huge engine,
and I'm guessing

there's nothing stock
about this bad boy.

How is
the Lexus engine?

-Good. Strong. Six volt mains.

How many...
How much horsepower?

-1,000 built.
-Yeah, that's awesome.

You can definitely get to
the grocery store to get
your Vegemite real quick.

-You know it's a Ford, right?
-Uh-huh.

-It has so much Chevy
in the back.
-Right.

- I think, like,
in the quarters.
- Right.

- But the front
says Ford all day, right?
- Yeah.

-Exactly.
-So crazy.

Like, I walked up on it,

-and I thought it was--
-I thought it was
a Chevrolet project.

-100%.
-Yeah.

It looks like a Ford
mixed with a Chevy.

Every time
we turn around here,

we're seeing something
that we've never seen before.

-I noticed these.
-Yeah, so--

-This isn't something
that we see a lot of...
-No.

...you know,
in the States. It's usually
open wheel, right?

Yeah. So, we've gotta
run a fender here
for legaling reasons.

But the other thing,
because we're a shop
that we build things,

-we like to show
what we can do.
-Totally.

Our apprentice
made all the fenders

-and the number plates around.
-That's cool.

It's got a rolled pan
on the back, and why
the exhaust

-is cut out and comes up
in the back. Looks different.
- Mmm-hmm.

We like to do different
things. It's not just
saving standard...

-Right.
-Right.

So, they have
a lot of regulations here

that all of these cars
have to fall within.

They have to get
way more creative
on some of these things.

-Manero, how you doing, man?
-Hey, man.

-Cool car.
-How's it going,
man? Pleasure.

-Very nice to meet you
-As you would know in America
as a gto.

-Gto.
-Yeah.

- That's it, so...
- What year is this?

- Yup.
- 2002.

I bought it brand new
off the showroom floor and--

And voided
all the warranties.

Correct, yeah.
From day one, actually.

- Well,
it looks so cool.
-That is so cool!

You've done a lot of work
to it, huh?

Yeah, yeah. So, a lot of work
in the engine bay.

-Everything's custom
fiberglass, but not...
-Right. Oh, it's beautiful.

-And look at all these panels.
-Yeah, that's it.
Correct, yeah.

For over 20 years,
this guy has enjoyed his car,
he's added to it.

And if you ask me,
it's just straight bitchin'.

-Hey, it was a pleasure, man.
-Yeah, great to meet you.
Thank you.

Thank you, yeah.

Let me guess, Ford Anglia.

-You're right, yeah.
-Right.

This car is chopped down
and looks mean.

I think the ingenuity
that you guys do
for your hot rod,

the fact that you guys stayed
so committed to finishing
the cars

-and making them
to where they're roadworthy.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

And going through
all of the hoops
you have to do

-to get 'em street legal.
- Absolutely. Yeah.

-I mean, it's just amazing.
And how many cars are here.
-Yeah.

And all of those people,
all of you guys.

the car community
going through those hoops
is just awesome.

It looks like
you drive it and enjoy it.

And I think that's probably
the most important job of all.

Cheers. Cheers, yeah.

-Take care, man. See ya.
-Thank you. Thank you.

That's awesome.

This is definitely
one of the more peculiar cars
I think I've ever seen.

-What is this?
-I have no idea.

It's like a Volkswagen thing.

-I did see... This is a...
- This yours?

-I believe this is a Kiwi.
-It is a Kiwi.

Is this Kiwi
The Doughnut Lover?

That's Kevin The Kiwi.
- Kevin The Kiwi.

Oh, really?

They named Kiwi
after me.

I don't know
how I feel about this

- And doughnuts,
because you like doughnuts.
-Yup, yup.

There you go.
Sprinklers are for winners.

-This is... What is this?
-Yeah, what kind of car
is this?

Morris Minor Lowlight.

- Okay, okay.
- 1950.

And she's called Rubi
because she's red.

Wow!

- 1950. It's beautiful.
- So, 1950. So, is that
the stock motor in it, still?

- No.
- It's been changed up?

Yeah.
My husband did it.

- Oh, this is cool.
- That's cool.

What a great-looking,
fun project.

That's beautiful. How long...
How long have you guys
had it done?

And how long have you guys
been enjoying it
and driving it around?

So, I finally
finished it probably about

A year ago? Cool.

We've had it
about 18 months.

- Oh, cool.
- It was a rust bucket.

Wow! So, you really...
you really moved
through it, then?

- That's what it was
when it started.
- Oh, wow!

- This
is awesome, though.
- That's beautiful.

It's different.
They've documented
all of the memories

of building this car,
and that means something
that's very important to us,

Families and hot rods
really goes together
quite well all over the world.

-Thank you so much.
It was a pleasure.
-Very, very nice to meet you.

What's up, man?
How's it going, buddy?

This is good. Hey.
Good, good. How are ya?

Something different.
How're you doing, bud?

Hello. I'm Rob Spike.

- Rob, nice to meet you.
- How's it going, man?
Pleasure. Pleasure.

Love the paint.
Love the paint. It's awesome.

Yeah,
something different.

- Yeah.

Not everyone's cup of tea,
but the color flips get ya.

Right, right, right.
Yeah, it's a chameleon.

-Yeah. Chameleon, yeah.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

So, here in Australia,

the two-door scene is
just as big as it is
in the United States.

Man, you got
a lot of work done
on this thing.

-Yeah. Built a custom--
- Pretty cool.

-Custom wheels, custom one off
no one else has got.
- Right.

We've got aluminum wheels,
and then changed the interior.

The front seats were bought.
The rear seats were all
being re-trimmed.

Very cool.

on all four wheels.

-This thing you're looking at
just comes in two liters.
- Nice.

-There you go.
-Nice.

I like that.
I like that.

That's awesome.
Hey, this is really cool.

Yeah, this one here
is an Evo 8MR,

-as says the plate.
- Okay.

-It's a 2004 model import.
-Uh-huh.

Yeah, then had
the motor rebuilt,
the gearbox rebuilt.

-and then went from there.
-Right, right.

This car has a ton of power,
some cool body mods,

and he even brought
another one.

And then, that one's
a little bit...

- Bit more chunkier.
- A little more chunky,
yeah, exactly.

So, these are nine
and a half inch wheels,

-and they're ten
and a half inch rims.
- Wow!

So,
that's the standard body,
and this is a lot wider.

So, this obviously
has been modified, right?

This has been modified,
as well.

This was originally
an Evo 7, 2001 model,

-which you would have seen
on Fast and Furious ovies.
-Right, right, right.

And then, the body kit
was an APR kit my friend
fitted a while ago.

This body kit, I believe
no one else has really
got this in Australia.

I haven't really seen too many
that actually have it.

-Oh, really?
-A lot of people have it
and bolt it on,

and cut the wheel arches out,

whereas this has all being
put on, molded in, made fit.

There was a lot of work
to try to make it fit
because... You'd understand.

- Yeah.
- And I think,
on that whole note,

is that a lot of people
don't understand

just 'cause you buy a part,
it doesn't mean it's gonna fit
the car like it's...

-like it's "advertised."

Usually, that's when
the work starts, is when
you actually get the part

-and you have to
make it fir the car perfectly.
- Right.

It was like,
I've got the rear door.

The rear door
never had that door on it.

It was always missing.
It looked like the door
was off a different car,

- Right.
- So, I had to put
that door line in it,

and then make it look...
Yeah, there's a lot of
work in it.

Yeah, this is wicked.

This is super cool.

Well, thank you.
Thank you. Thanks
for bringing us.

-Yeah, great to meet ya.
- It was a pleasure.

-Thanks. Good to meet you.
-Great car.

-Nice to meet you, too.
- Thank you.

For as much fun
as we're having right now,

unfortunately, we're coming up
to the end.

-All right,
so it's the moment of truth.

All right,
so it's the moment of truth.

There's gonna be
some really happy people.

-And a couple of
disappointed people.
-It's true.

-But it was very tough.
-It's a part of life.

There's beautiful
cars everywhere.

Kevin and I are considered
the Thunder From Down Under
this week,

and we're having a great time.

It's time for us now
to make a decision
on which show car

we're gonna pick as our best.

Okay, I'm kidding about
the Thunder From Down Under
thing. It's just me.

Kevin's really not
in the running.

He's a close second.

The Americana in this country
is absolutely bonkers.

Almost rivals America itself.

-I would have to
agree with that.
-Yeah?

-America, you better
step your game up.
-That's right.

-Let's go give
this award away.
-Let's give some awards away.

Thank you very much, you guys.

Wow!

What a way to welcome us
into a new country.

First time... First time here,

and we've been just
absolutely dazzled.

The people have been great.
The cars that you guys
have brought out here

are amazing.

I have to say, the turnout
has been awesome.

This is so humbling
to come down here, finally,

and get to check out
all of the culture
and the hot rods.

Yeah, we've got
a lot of nice cars here.

We're looking at
a certain amount of winners.
We're gonna roll into it.

Dave's favorite...

It's the top award, Dave has
to go around and find
a vehicle,

but the last award
of this section, entrant...

No.

It's the '55 Pontiac
of Shane River.
Well done, Shane.

Dave, tough one, mate.
Awesome car.

Dave's Fav
is always a tough one
because I'm a car guy.

Four, uh... Four wheels
and a steering wheel,
and that's all it takes.

- Here you go.

Now, of course, that was...
That was Dave's favorite.

What does this say?

What does that say
on the award?

It says "Camp Dingo's Choice."

-The one and only!
-Camp Dingo's Choice.

And it goes to...

The ve hdt ute
of Paul Amato!

-Well done, Paulie!

Thanks, guys.
Hey, you still wanna buy it?

It's for sale
if you wanna buy it.

All right, guys. Next up,
we're gonna go in
at the top five,

in no particular order.

Ron Goodman.

Mr. Ron Goodman.

Wonderful car.

The award goes to
an LJ Torana
by Luke Mitchell.

- And have a look
at the size of him.

Xy gt falcon
of Jason Mansueto!

A 1954 Chevrolet
of Mike Davidson.
Well done, Mike.

-Give him a round of applause.

A great result for Mike.

The next one
is the HR Holden ute
of Craig McKenzie.

That incredible white ute.

Rounding out our top five.

The top five, really,

'52 cab-over of Rob Dixon.

Well done, Rob.

We've seen some crazy,
crazy stuff down here.

It's gonna be super hard
to just pick one.

Just talk us through
the process of finding
the number one car,

what you guys will do.

Well, it starts
with a great display.

You have to be able to see
around the car.

This vehicle that we picked

was actually
very well displayed,
very well lit.

The color choice
was also a big point of that.

Color contrast
is always something
I'm very passionate about,

and I think Kevin
can agree with that.

He usually second guesses me
until it's done,

and then he agrees that,
"Okay, that was all right."

The third part of that,
crawling around,
looking at all the details.

When you look at the car,
the level of the build
of the car that we picked,

what you're looking for
is not what's right,

you're actually just trying
to find something wrong.

And when it takes you
more than a half an hour
to find a speck of dust,

or a screw that maybe
needs to be turned in
just a little bit tighter,

you know that you've found
the gem.

Our elite winner...

for the elite car show
is the XY Ford Falcon
of Dan Morton.

Very well...
Very well put together.

Between the race,
the car show, the jets,

everything that's happened
down here, we have had
such a great time.

I cannot wait
to come back next year.

This has been
one bitchin' tour
from Down Under.

You should be
very proud of that build,
and congratulations.

Kevin, I don't know
if you could ever have
a better experience

in Australia
for the very first time.

I don't know what to say.
I am speechless
of so many things here.

-It's the people,
the cars, the events.
- Dave] The races.

I mean, the car show
has been awesome.

The people here, amazing.
The view. The weather.

I mean, honestly,
I don't think I could
ever come back.

All the new words
we've learned.

I really think we,
and Kindig-It Design
as a team,

have really left a mark
on Australia. So...

-I think you're right.
-We're ready to just call it.

-I think you're right.
-I don't wanna go home.

I don't either,
but we have to.

-We gotta get back
to the shop.
-Yeah, it's true.

-Let's go.
-Okay, see ya.
