Well, that excites me.

Gifting your wife a car

should be one of the happiest
and funnest times
of your life.

And that is exactly how
this project started.

This thing will be filled with
chicks in high school
going to the dance club.

The Ritz Club.

The Ritz Club. [laughs]

Yeah.

We could only run it to
half a tank,

and then it would completely
run out of gas.

That's right because
the pickup tube
was in the wrong spot...

That's a little embarrassing
because you were--

It's funny is how many times
did he save you when
we first started dating?

-At least six times.

-And you never were
actually out of gas.

Back in the day,
Charity and her dad

built a 1967 Chevelle,
two-door hard top.

The car was down low.
Pretty cool.

The problem is, we couldn't
afford the gas in the car

and I happened to be
into Volkswagens.

So, I sold the Chevelle
and bought the Beetle.

So, right around
three years ago,

I had the opportunity
to buy another Chevelle

that matched exactly what
Charity and her dad had built
when she was in high school.

This car's beautiful,
just like you.

This car is going home
with us. It's yours.

So, now Dave has bought me
a replacement car.

All right. Let's go.

Oh, my gosh.
This is like a dream.

so, it's gonna really actually
be able to get on the freeway

and actually be able
to be driven.

The idea behind her build is
to recreate what she
once had,

which was black, with all of
the chrome on the car.

I mean, it's a classic.
It's gotta have the chrome.

[sigh] I'm gonna have a hard
time with black bumpers
on this car.

touch up the bottom,
we're gonna do mini-tubs.

Aside from that,

firewall and mini tubs
is really the bulk
of the metal work.

they make great patch panels.

We're gonna change the center
of the driveline tunnel

because we're sitting
a lot lower.

We're gonna change
the firewall.

We gotta tub it.

There's a couple of areas
in the trunk, that are
a little questionable.

So, we're just gonna go
and put a all-new
floor in here.

We're just gonna be very
cautious not to do any
additional damage

to the inside of the car,

or the outside,
for that matter.

it's a rusty piece of [bleep].

if it's not snowing outside,

I guarantee you, she's gonna
drive this car every
single day.

terrorizing the town
in one of these cars.

So, the very first thing
I wanna do is get the old
chassis out

from underneath this car,

and get the new one
set underneath it

to start mocking
everything up.

Unbolt everything,
separate body from chassis.

Get a few guys and we'll try
to lift it off of here.

all of his bolts.

Usually, when the body doesn't
separate from the chassis,

something's not right.

I don't struggle
with this part,

but separating a body
from a chassis

can be a wild goose chase.

Try to lift on that a little.
I just wanna see if it even...

We've got separation.

You can't find
what the holdup is,

emergency brake cable.

the cool features of this new
Roadster shop chassis

is the fact that it's gonna
sit the car right down low
on the ground.

This is gonna be really cool.

'Cause that basically solves a
lot of the aesthetic problems
with one of these cars.

You can leave it all
stock looking.
But if you slam it,

it just looks so much better.

So, with all of this newer,
more modern suspension,

it's gonna allow us to put
a lot more horsepower
down to the car.

Also, speaking of horsepower,

we have a 820 horsepower LT4,

Lingenfelter-tuned badass
going in this thing.

Backed with
an 4L85E transmission.

It's gonna get down
the freeway just fine,

and be a lot of fun to drive.

[Jason] We're gonna roll
the chassis underneath.

See how close we are to
getting it to fit.

And try not to have to
cut everything out.

Yeah, we'll get her down to
where we can see what we're
up against.

And then, we'll go from there.

to match up perfectly.

is quite a bit bigger,

which means, we get
the body down.

We're gonna need
a little bit room on the floor
in the interior.

and lower it and all

the majority of that hole

It'll help us get closer
to our goal of touching
the chassis.

Touching the chassis is
a very important part
of the job,

that's how you know it fits.

is set on the new chassis

masters going on the project.

completely dialed in.

the big blades out

and chop the major chunk out.

So, I've got the main
trunk section disconnected
and cut out of here.

As well as the tubs.

Just been kind of digging
away at this thing.

Coming across a little more
rust than I was expecting.

We wanna save the paint
on this thing.

But I'm getting real close
to some of this rust.

It's creeping down to
where the painted areas are.

[Dave] We're fixing up
Charity's 1967 Chevelle,

starting with this rusty metal
under the car.

All the PPE on this one.

We wanna save the paint
on this thing.

But I'm getting real close
to some of this rust.

It's creeping down to
where the painted areas are.

So, I'm hoping I can
dig it away

and be able to get something
to weld to

where I'm not messing up
the outside exterior paint.

[Dave] The entire rusted floor
actually needs to come out
of the car and be replaced.

We're gonna start
in the trunk.

[Eric] Looks like we have
the patch panels
to fix it all.

We're gonna keep going.
Trim this thing up.

Get it cleaned. Whoo!

Little more rust
to trim away though.

I'm gonna be able to start
replacing the panels
here soon.

I did find a golf key.
That might be a good omen.

So, I'm happy about that.

So far so good.

I think I've got the majority
cut out that I need to.

[Dave] Before we can
install the trunk floor,

we need to make some
extra room for these massive
rear tires we're gonna put in.

[Eric] So, I'm gonna get
the tubs fit in.

And make sure that we have
as much tire clearance
as we can.

And then, I'll be able to
trim the floor with the trunk
to fit in around the tubs.

Get it all
sandwiched together.

The new chassis has
a huge amount of room
for these rear wheels

and we're gonna use
every last bit of it
with these tubs.

Yeah, 15 inches? Yeah.

You can tell,
it's a one tire fire.

This one was full of mud,
and dirt and rocks over here.

-This one was just
more debris.
-[Will laughs]

-Just rusted away.
-Yeah.

This is so much cooler than
the ten bolt that came out
of there.

Factory rear ends on
these cars were never...

The difference between
that ten bolt rear end
that we took out of here,

and this new, modern nine inch

is huge in strength.

a little bigger then I need to
extend it.

But I wanna make sure
I have enough to cover
the frame,

then I'll come back
and retrim it.

This is just kind of
a rough cut here.

Gonna start
tacking it together.

Make sure it fits nice.

Get the other pieces made,
then I'll plow through
with a nice weld

across the whole thing
and finish it out.

We got this one all extended.

I need to get the other one
caught up, and then,

we'll start making them
feel a little better.

May end up stretching this
a little more to take it
by the frame, but we'll see.

A little more fine tuning.

Hoo! That looks all
pretty squared away.

Yeah, I think so.

We're trying to save these
old panels as well as
meld them with the new,

without damaging
anything else.

[Jake] So, I'm just cutting
this floor down

We're gonna shrink
the whole thing about
six inches.

So, three inches off
either side.

Now, I'm gonna cut this
flange out first.

And then, I'm gonna reweld
the flange on

at a narrow dimension,
so it sits on top
of the frame.

[Eric] This is the first
test bit.

We're not expecting it
to be perfect right off
the bat.

We're seeing how much
we gotta trim.

Watch that,
outside of that paint.

[Jake] We're scrubbing.

This supposed to sit
on top of that rocker?

Now, I gotta go down.

Pick it up a little bit
to see...

I'm betting this trunk panel's
gonna be way more work
than we'd thought.

[Eric] See if we can
get away with that.

[Jake] Still gotta tilt way
farther up front.

[Eric] You gotta come up
in the front?

[Jake] Yeah, otherwise there's
no way we're getting this--

Or down in the front,
either way.

[Eric] This thing was meant to
be sandwiched.

We learned that this floor
is not gonna fit near the way
we thought it was.

So, we're gonna have to
cut off some section of it
to get in there.

[Dave] We're gonna restore
this 1967 Chevelle for a very
beautiful and special client,

my wife.

I want it all black.
I don't want chrome.

Black, everything.

For 30 plus years,
I've had my work cut out
for me with this lady.

And the guys in the shop
are gonna have their work
cut out for them

replacing all
the rusted metal.

[Will] I'm sure that they're
expecting to adapt...

-[Eric] The corners are off.
-[Will] Corners are off. Yeah.

And it absolutely is too wide
to drop down to the top.

-Yeah.
-[Will] It's a big old puzzle.

-Gosh! That's stinks, man.
-Where's the rulebook on this?

Buy this big old piece,
and then have to chop it up
to get it in?

[Dave] Cutting the new
trunk floor panel is not
exactly ideal.

But this will ensure that
we can fit the panels
in there properly

without doing any damage
to the outside of the body.

Yeah, don't get
anything too hot.
That's the biggest thing.

-Cut this thing where it's got
all the, you know, strength.
-Yeah.

And just like,
keep the panel cool.

[Dave] You know, normally when
we do a resto-mod with
a car like this,

we would do it from
the outside in.

This one in particular
is for the inside out.

For our next trick,
we're gonna weld in
the new floor.

'Cause originally, this is all
sandwiched in between
some things

that we didn't end up
taking apart all the way.

But with a couple of cuts,
we'll be able to get
in and out.

So, we're about to go
put it back in.

It's all prepped, good to go.
We're gonna cleco it in,
get it ready to weld.

I'm just trying to get
under this brace.

Sometimes, tough love is
just what the doctor ordered
to get things to work.

So, we got it in there.
We're psyched.

[Dave] This bad boy's

rust on it.

We got it those vacuumed up
and we're ready to go.

[Dave] The trunk
turned out bitchin'.

Now, the problem is, is now,
we gotta do the rest
of the floor,

which is gonna be a bit
of a chore.

Looks like the majority
of that floor's coming out.

And then, they wanna
slide the engine back
about two inches.

-So, we gotta make some
provisions for...
-[Jake] The firewall removed?

Think we're just gonna
smooth out the firewall.

I think we can do that
once this thing is all split.

So, I'll map out the floor
and I'll see you in there.

[Dave] First up, clear out
all of the damaged metal.

My shoe approve now?

Probably cut this into
about six pieces, probably.

Take it out little bit
at a time.

We don't wanna get to crazy
or cut too deep

and get into the frame
or anything.

So, just gonna take it
nice and easy, and get it
cleared out.

Then we'll put the fun stuff
back in.

All the rust is out,
fresh metal's going back in.

So, now that I've got this
floor section flattened out,

I'm gonna add about
two inches or so,

just to tighten up the gap
for the tunnel.

[Dave] Once these floorboards
are fit and ready to go in,

we can actually then connect
them to the trans tunnel
and the drive line tunnel.

So, we got this all extended.
We're looking good.

I'm gonna start on
the tunnel now.

That's all we need.

[Dave] We're carefully
replacing all of the little
rusted spots in this car.

One section at a time.

Since this is an aftermarket
chassis and we've bought
the motor and trans

and everything else up
inside the chassis
a little bit,

we'll actually go ahead
and build the new drive line
tunnel to this floor.

We're gonna be doing this in
two pieces 'cause I can't fit
it in the roller otherwise.

Little arm workout today.

You know, just keep snugging
up these rollers

until this thing is probably
about maxed out.

We're looking for about
an eight inch radius on
this thing.

We just keep on rolling.

So, I just wanna keep
the sides even, so it doesn't
cone on you.

Do a little fine tuning
but not bad.

First section.

Back and forth
a good number of times.
Try to give it some memory.

All right, I got these
two pieces rolled up
pretty similar.

And I'm gonna get them
mated together now.

Steve!

Yeah, I'm just getting
the height of the metal
of the tunnel

and the floor lined up.

Want it to lay nice and tight.
Make it easier to weld.

[Dave] With the new
transmission, it is much
larger than the original one.

So, the guys need to make sure
that they leave enough room

to be able to hook up
all of the shifting components

and also, the electronics.

Just finished up
the transmission
and drive line tunnels.

Now, we're gonna bring Steve
in to start doing the exhaust.

Building an exhaust underneath
a very low car takes a bit
of time and a lot of talent.

With all the things going on
underneath this car,

there's really not a lot
of room for the exhaust.

Steve has happened to pay
attention to every curve
and every bend

and every tight crevice where
this exhaust needs to run.

And the welds have
to be perfect.

[Dave] This is where
it gets tricky.

Yeah, it's gonna get
pretty tricky 'cause I gotta

make a pretty sharp turn,
get up over the axel

and then, maybe I put some
new pipes. It's crazy.

You know, we're gonna need
a little bit of clearance
on this exhaust.

And cutting the floor might
not be the worst option.

Got Will's blessing
to kind of nosh the floor

and get myself a little bit
more room.

So, just gonna cut little
pile of pie pieces
out of trunk,

and give myself
some more room.

This is kind of, more or less,
just an insurance to
protect the bank.

Get clearance around
the suspension.

Get about a good inch or so
from the floor.

So, we're gonna basically,
come down underneath
the frame.

And then, kind of follow
the frame rail between
the rocker and the frame.

And just kind of dump it
right before the bumper.

You know, the exhaust
looks awesome.

And that's why I leave it
to the pros.

Dave likes them clean.
So, we're gonna hide
the tail pipes.

[Dave] We're working on
my wife, Charity's,
brand new daily driver.

And it's looking great.

Eric's now working on
the new custom smooth firewall
for this car.

And that's gonna pretty much
wrap up all of
the underside fabrication.

I've got the firewall
torn apart here.

Starting to get that
shaped up.

It's gonna keep on pushing.
Everything's looking so far
so good.

the old piece from
the original firewall

into this fresh firewall,
just going nice
and smooth otherwise.

it in and weld it up. So...

knocked off,
we'll go fit it up.

to on the smooth firewall's,

we've taken all of
the multiple pieces out from
the factory original firewall,

smoothened it out,
got rid of all of the holes
that we don't need,

of course, we're putting all
modern components in,

so we don't need the big hole
for the heater assembly,

any of that stuff from
the old anything.

It's all smooth,
and it's all new
and it's all bitchin'.

[Eric] So far so good.
I'm gonna start burning
it in.

There's no going back.

Charity should be
really happy with this one.

It's gonna look really nice.

I'm very happy with
the progress on the car.

The floor, the exhaust,
everything's really
coming together.

And it looks awesome.
