And we want to turn it into
a 2020 hummer "h"-whatever.
You told me
a little bit about --
Your wife has had
a couple of these.
They don't make them anymore,
so I'm intrigued.
She wanted a hummer the last
year of the hummer being made.
We found one, and it was like
one of the last three available
That were brand-new
in 2009.
Fast forward 2016,
And she wants
a brand-new hummer.
Well, I know exactly
how she feels.
Russell's wife wants
to take this old car
That they don't make anymore and
make a brand-new version of it?
Sounds like my kind of job.
Does she have any kind
of specific ideas
That she's kind of looking for
as far as changing color?
Well, this one's starting
to get a little old.
So it's starting to break down
a little bit.
So she wants that to be new,
so it's reliable.
As far as body color,
we can go candy-apple red
All the way to,
you know, black.
-She's open to whatever.
-She's open.
And wheels,
I think brand-new wheels,
You know,
bring it up-to-date.
What we don't want is a vehicle
that looks like a clown car,
So we're looking for something
That rolled off the factory line
in 2020.
You want this to look rugged
but yet high-end.
We don't want it to look like
one of those
-Bulletproof vehicles that --
-for sure.
...that are just
a little too much.
When this hummer is completed,
I want it to look like
A 10-year-into-the-future
concept vehicle.

the drivetrain, transmission.
Let's make sure everything's
basically back

brand-new condition.
I think a brand new lsa
supercharged motor.
This one has 420 horsepower.
We're thinking about raising
the horsepower 500, 600.
The bigger, the better.

at what we got here.

is I need to go something
-A little bit more modern.

I intend on lowering it

Definitely some one-off wheels.
The front of the hummer,

Want to make some big changes.
They're very common.
They were the same pretty much
since they started making them
Until they stopped
making them in 2009.
Lots of body modifications.
I think they're wanting more of,
like, a, you know, maroon color.
I think we're definitely
going to want to do
What I call an angry eye,
And that is to cut off
the top of the round headlight.
That will kind of give it
a modern look.
Get rid of the roof rack
Because you're not going to put
skis on top of this thing.
Custom bumpers, definitely
some big l.e.d. Lights,
Make it look high-end
and definitely as a concept.
I think I'll take them down.
We'll get with the guys,
Let them know

Making this into

to have a slight taper this way
And slight roll, as well.
So we need to do
whatever it takes
To make these doors
and panels completely smooth.
But I got an idea
that will speed things up.

with cardboard

off the rendering,
And I think it's pretty close
to what's on there.
I tried to keep the radiuses
really sharp,
Kind of the same way
that the hummer is originally.
I think it's super cool,
and I think
That you've really picked up,
like, all the flair
And all the styling
that dave wanted to integrate.
Every little detail
of this hummer
Needs to feel like
it's from the future.
Kind of like a concept,
like, prototype.

As far as I'm concerned,
I'm done with mock-up.
I'm ready to see these things
become real.

Of the hood itself on here.
The hood design
is kind of complex.
Dave designed the hood here
in the drawing
With all these little
ribs and vents
And all that in the top section.
Pete's got a big task
in front of him.
Basically, he needs to take
this original hood,
Reshape it so it looks
like my rendering.
This will ensure that we have
a perfect plug,
So we can send it out,
pull a mold,
And make a perfect piece.
Use this foam as a layout,
shape it and everything
How we want to make it look
and everything,
And then once that's all
said and done,
We'll coat the whole thing
in fiberglass.
In the old days,
cars were made from metal.
Apparently, cars of the future
are too good for metal.

the foam shaping,
We got the fender
flares built.
Now it's time to solidify
this entire hood.
I like to mix it a little light
so I got time to work with it.
That means going from pete
forming up all this foam
To moses laying on the glass.
Moses: it's just a thin
fiberglass cloth.
You see, after it gets wet,
then it starts to,
More or less,
turn into the fiberglass.
The air just
gets trapped inside,
And you get little air bubbles,
But you want to make sure
you get them all out
Just like putting on a sticker
on the window of your car.
You don't want little bubbles
in it and stuff.
Then it will start to get
moisture and stuff
Underneath it,
and then it will end up peeling.

So I'm just going to kind of
work piece-by-piece.
Eventually, this entire hood
Will be fiberglass
from top to bottom.

so now that we've spent the time
And we've got the exact shape
of the hummer hood that we need,
We're going to go ahead
and give it to doug,
And he's going to use it
as a buck to make a mold,
And he's going to spray one
out of one piece of fiberglass.

There's a lot of reverse angles,
But if anybody can pull this

Can take this hummer hood
to the next level.
My concern with this is,
everything that we've done
On top of
the fiber-enforced plastic
Is not going to hold
in the long run.

Now we've made
this awesome buck,
So now I'm looking at,
can you make me a mold
And pop me one of these out,
out of just fiberglass?

One of the more intricate parts
that I've actually done.
Something with this kind of
structure, this kind of detail,

maybe 10 pieces.
We can puzzle that back together
with bolts,
And now we've got
a full interior piece
That we can just
lay fiberglass into.

Said and done, now you pull
the molds off of it,
And you've got the exact hood
of what you brought over.
Okay, perfect.
You look around the shop.
You see boats.
You see dinosaurs.
You see all this crazy stuff
made out of fiberglass.

it not look like
It's just a bolt-on part
is the way the rockers were all
-Added to the existing rocker.

That way, the jam's
going to come down,
And it's just going to go
right into the rocker.

The higher the sparkle,
the lighter it is,
The more air pressure
you have.
The farther back you go,
the more potential for sparkle,
But sometimes
you can get it darker.
And people don't
quite understand,
When you say,
"I got to paint a car,"
What really is
at the bottom of it.
No, they don't.

Yes, you do, so that's why
we let you do it.
That's why I do it.

would call painting,
I call interpretive dance.

Act one of this modern
interpretive dance style
Is going to be applying
the sealer,
Then the first stage
of base coat.
Act two is making sure
that this first coat
Is ready for the next coat.
Just kind of dragging it across.
Any burr that happens
in the sealer,
Which is often,
this gets out.

This is a sand scratch.
It can happen.
Sometimes when you try
and fix one problem,
You're really just creating
another problem somewhere else,
So paint has
no exception to that.
If you're not careful, you can
think you're sanding here,
And that edge will dig
and create another sand scratch,
Which means there's
more work for yourself.
A lot of people would assume
that by applying material,
Such as paint, over a flaw,
It would cover it up,
but that's not the case.
Paint will actually
Bring those flaws
even more visible to you.
Freddy:
hopefully it's not that deep,
and you can just get rid of it
Right at the sealer stage, which
looks like it's going to be,
And I'll just come back in
and dust some base coat on it.
Nobody's perfect. I mean,
I'm about as perfect as you get,
But even I'm not perfect.

It's really rich.
When I was trying to think
of what would be a really nice,
Modern touch
to the interior of this hummer,
I want to complement
the exterior color,
So I came up
with four options.
The customer happened
to pick two.
Did you get an alcantara
for the headliner,
-Or are we doing leather?
-No, he insisted leather.
-Okay, well, that's fine.
-Give him what he wants.
Originally, when I showed
the design to justin,
He was suggesting an alcantara
for the headliner,
But he decided just
to do leather instead.
Let them eat cake.
-That's right.
-Or have leather headliners.

So we got the hummer headliner
out, got the cloth all off.
Now we have to smooth it down
to the bare fiberglass,
And it's pretty time-consuming.
♪♪
This headliner has to be
perfectly prepped,
Or everything is going to show.
And this is a big headliner.
This is going to eat up
some leather.
I just hope we have enough.
Cody's going to grab
some more hides,
-And we'll fish through them.
-They're heavy.
We're just chucking stuff.
That hurts my shoulders.
Oh. Ah. Ah.
That one's not going to work.
Yeah, that one's not
very good at all.
Cow science has yet
to produce a perfect cow,
So we got to work
with what we have.
I think what we really need
to do
Is just find a way to minimize
it, you know what I mean?
Did we check this one?
No.
This one don't look bad.
I mean, we might get away
with this one back there
And that one up front.
I think this is going
to be the one.
The best solution
is using two hides.
The trick is going to be
joining them together.
I just want to make sure
we seam it somewhere
Where it's going to look
not like we patched it in,
Like it was supposed
to be like that.
-Yes, sir.
-Just come with a nice arch.
Do both sides like that.
Let's get that patterned out,
And then let's address
this front
And see if we can cheat it
to where all's we're doing
Is putting one seam
in here.
-Cool?
-You got it, boss.
All righty.

Man: I just got to pattern
the leather.
It's got to be perfect.
Hopefully, my pattern's spot on.
We'll lay a nice tack coat,
Let it dry,
And then, when it's all done,
just steam it on.
Should come out nice and smooth.

The upholstery's coming along
nicely on this hummer.
Now it's time
to figure out the lights.
I hope our resident
mad scientist
Doesn't blind everybody
in the process.
That's really bright.
I know.
Look at this one.
-No, I don't want to.
-[ Cackles ]
This is total, full-on
experiment land, you know?
Trying to do
something wild, different,
But we got to figure out how
are we going to achieve that?
So here we are.
We're just getting started
On hummer taillights,
side-marker lights
And a front,
daytime running light.
There's some really interesting
things about this hummer,
But one of the most important
Is that we illuminate
the way to the future.
This is total, full-on
experiment land, you know?
Trying to do something
wild, different.
We have a certain look
in mind --
Laser beams, neon,
Little bit
of lightsaber going on,
Maybe some piercing
through the night,
I don't know,
long-distance stuff.
But we got to figure out
which one of these bulbs --
What do we have?
What do we want to look at,
And how are we going
to achieve that?
So, I got a soldering iron here.
We're going to see if we can't
Get this stuff
soldered together,
Get some electricity to them
without melting them.

These l.e.d.s and these l.e.d.
Strips are very dainty.
I guess robots build them.
Soldering is generally a pretty
straightforward process,
But when you're dealing
with the smallest, little,
Tiniest pieces and parts,
You really got to slow down,
get in that zen mode.

Okay.
I think I might have got it.
So let's just hook this up
and see.
Oh. Yay!
Okay. So, those are
really bright.
You know when you have
a really bright light at night,
And all of a sudden,
it starts attracting
All the bugs and stuff?

-That's really bright.
-I know.
-Look at this one.
-No, I don't want to.
It's really no different
here at the shop.
[ Will cackles ]
Kevin:
making the lights come on
And blind the average
human being is one thing,
But these need to look cool
and futuristic.
What about just lights?
So there's that.
We could run this.
Yeah, if you did
two of those --
And we could use that as,
like, the running lights.
It definitely lights up
a lot more
Than the single l.e.d.
On the bottom.
What about this?
Now, that gives it
a nice interesting look,
Like a bunch
of stacked lights.
I like that, too.
I like that way better.
That looks very awesome.
I think we pick that one.
I've seen "back to the future"
part one, two, and three.
I know what
futuristic cool means.
I think we're on
the right track.
Okay, cool.

Dave: from every exterior panel
and piece of trim...
I like it.
I think it's cool.
...to every interior feature
and piece of upholstery...
Let them eat cake.
-That's right.
-Or have leather headliners.
...we are deep in the trenches
of turning this 2009 hummer h2
Into the h2s of 2025.
Boop. Boop.
Looks like we got
this hood back from doug.
Looks pretty good, man.
I like it.
Just as kevin predicted,
Doug delivered the hood
we all wanted.
It's all one substrate.
It's all fiberglass.
-Yeah.
-This has no mounting.
This has no structure.
This is just,
like, a shell.
Between the old structure of
the hood and this new hood skin,
It's really up to us to make
sure it's mounted properly.
The plan is, is to take the
other one that we have here,
Use the guts that we need to get
this one mounted onto the car,
And then just glue them
together for one time,
And then we should be good.
-Let's do it.
-Awesome, dude.
Teamwork.

I think we're going to have
to cut in right through here.

The trick is going to be to take
that new fiberglass piece,
Space it out properly
so it lines up to the body
And still opens like a hood.
It fits...horribly.

Trim a little bit, fit, trim
a little bit, and keep going.
Up on your side
and then down.
Test-fit it again,
round four.
-I like it.
-Awesome, dude.
It's looking good, man.
Looks way good.
I think
we're about there.
What do you call a hood
that opens, closes,
And fits perfectly?
Done stamp.
Had to cut out a little more
than I was thinking,
But you got to do
what you got to do.
Time to test some bonding stuff
and get it glued on.
-Cool, man.

I think that's about as much
as we can get from that.
Dave: to complete
the hummer of the future,
We need to use
the tools of the future.
This 3-d scanner
has become indispensable.
With this, we're going to design
a bucket that bolts into this,
So the whole turn-signal
assembly will mount into here,
And because we have the scan,
we can make it fit perfectly.

We need as many scans
as it takes, not a set number.
Just got to try to get
as much information as we can.
I get the top corner
good enough, or...?
It looks good. Yeah.
I think we're good.

Dave: working with all this 3-d
technology will allow greg
To make sure
he gets every contour
And every detail perfect.
Greg: looks good.
Once the buck is ready,
He'll have a little bit
of feathering out to do,
And then it's off to production.
Greg: all right.
So, I finished the 3-d print
For the bucks for the lenses.
This fits really well.
I think this thing's ready
to send off.
I'm going to box it up
and get it shipped out.

Dave: while the front light
lenses are off to manufacturing,
We got our own challenges with
these rear taillight lenses.
Greg: the taillights are huge.
You don't really realize it
Until you're trying
to 3-d print it,
And you got to cut it in half.
So I'm printing
the bottom half right now,
And then, we have a couple
lenses that go inside here,
And then, there's a lens
that goes on top, too,
So a lot of parts going on,
a lot of moving pieces.

We got about 150 l.e.d.s
To put in
for just the parking lights,
Probably another hundred
for the brake lights,
So I'll be busy.

To wiring and upholstery
on the interior,
The rush to finish is on,
and I can't wait
For russ and his wife to check
out their hummer of the future.
That's all we have to do
is everything else.

it's going to look like.
We've seen renditions.
We've never really seen
the whole thing.
I want to see
what it looks like.

The anticipation

We've given her a face-lift,
or a rear lift, as it were.
The taillights,
we went full-length
As if gm was still
building the hummer.
Dave was mentioning he wanted
to change the lights
On the back of the vehicle.
I was a little skeptical
at first,
But, I mean,
they came out beautiful.
It's crazy beautiful.
It's why we brought it here.
[ Chuckles ]
Nobody does it better.
When you look at the profile
of this, again,
It still looks like a hummer,
But we've really done
some smooth-over on it.
We've actually lowered it.
It still looks like an h2,
But adding
all of the new flares,
The rocker panels
and, of course,
Those k*ller taillights,
it's just over-the-top cool.
-Unbelievable.
-It's gorgeous.
It is gorgeous,
no doubt.
She loves it.
Russell loves it, and I love it.

-I think it's -- I can't --

of really small touches --
Well, actually,
there was big touches to it.
Reshaping it, getting rid
of that grille
That really didn't have any
function, with the two handles
On the top of the hood.
Dave: there's so many changes
That really still looks
like a hummer h2,
But the h2s has got
a lot more attitude.
Putting the bar in there
is a contrast.
Again, it kind of gives it some
muscle, but it's elegant muscle.
-Thank you.
-Yeah, yep.
And that's one-piece
fiberglass?
-Yep.
-It is.
-I got to be honest with you.
-Really?
I was a little scared.
It was getting very masculine,
And I had to remind them
that it was for a woman,
So I kept saying, "I'm going
to make you paint it pink
If you keep getting
more masculine."
But no, it's perfect.
Kathleen: all the guys
are going to love the car,
But really, it's a beautiful
car for a woman.
Let me show you
under the hood.

So, we took the old, tired motor
out of there,
Which was a 6-liter.
We put in a lsa,
a brand-new engine,
Change the transmission
so it can handle the horsepower.
You know what, colin?
I think we're a little
Over 700 horsepower,
And that's going to be
the fastest car in your school,
By far,
and the coolest.
-Pretty cool, huh?
-Awesome!
Amazing. Beyond our wildest
expectations, for sure.
Yeah, one of a kind.
