- [Schwag] After 48 episodes of making cars go crazy,

we're finally doing something that makes sense.

- We're gonna make beer.

- [Schwag] Jesse James is going from

tube bender to bartender.

- Stoked.

- [Schwag] For the next hour,

"Monster Garage" will be your designated driver.

- It's my new helmet.

- [Schwag] Hey, anybody thirsty?

- [Announcer] Join us now

as Jesse and his g*ng of maverick mechanics

rip, grind, and burn,

transforming ordinary street vehicles into monster machines

in the Monster Garage.

- [Announcer] This week's challenge,

turn this 1963 International firetruck

into a monster microbrewery.

The rules, the monster must appear to be stock.

The team will get 5,000 bucks for parts.

They'll have seven days and nights.

The first day, they design.

For the next five, they build.

And on the seventh day, they brew.

If successful, each builder gets a $4,000 box of Mac tools.

And the clock's crushed now.

[clock smashing]

Way Fast Firestarter takes his new wagon out for a spin.

- Look, a firetruck, man.

This is the first time I've ever driven a firetruck.

[upbeat rock music]

[sirens wailing]

- [Jesse] They're pulling over. [chuckles]

[sirens wailing]

- [Announcer] After sounding out the alarm,

Jesse introduces Big Red to the garage.

What once saved people will soon waste them.

[energetic rock music]

The design team's here

to plan the monster of all microbreweries.

Lee Chase is the brewmaster at Stone Brewing Company

in San Marcos, California.

Ron Krol customizes tanks

for microbreweries across the country.

Artist Ron Mendell is a designer for motion pictures.

And from the Colorado Rockies,

master brewer Dave Bright from the Coors Brewing Company.

- All right, so we're gonna make some beer.

- Sounds good. - Yeah. [chuckles]

- 'Cause nobody likes that, right? [chuckles]

There's no beer drinkers that watch "Monster Garage."

- Nah, I don't think so. [Jesse chuckles]

All right, I think, do you wanna...

One of you guys wants to run through?

I don't even have any idea what we're gonna do.

- I should just do the basic elements of brewing?

- [Jesse] Yeah, yeah.

- What we need basically are three ingredients, plus yeast.

We've got malt, we've got water, hops,

and then we'll need to have yeast do most of the work

once we've done what we need to do.

So we'll need a mash tun and lauter, that's one vessel.

That'd be about the simplest way.

You guys agree? - Right.

- So we'll separate the mash, the spent grains out,

pull the sugars out, put them in the brew kettle.

That'd be our second vessel.

And we'll need some serious heat to bring that to a boil.

And then the third and final vessel, we'll need to cool it,

inject a little oxygen, pour in the yeast,

and we'll run it into a fermentor.

And then we'll have to cool that fermentor

or at least control the temperature

within maybe, oh, I don't know, five to maybe eight degrees.

Control that and let it ferment out.

- Heat's gonna be easy, 'cause doing a, you know,

a burner and stuff and propane.

The refrigeration is gonna be the hardest part.

And we've done that before.

- [Ron] Yeah, I think the only other issues we're gonna have

are things like transferring it from tank to tank.

- You need to cool it while you're moving it.

- Yeah. - So we need a heat exchanger.

- Okay.

You guys know way more than I do about this,

so just tell me what to make and I'll make it.

[group chuckling] - Once we brew it,

We can probably have a party about two weeks later.

- I don't think you can rush good beer.

- No, you can't. You can't. - It won't...

It will not be drinkable Saturday under any...

There's no way to do it.

It has to ferment, so.

- I think everybody's patient.

We'll just wait two weeks.

- Yeah. - Get everything done

and get all our work done and wait it out.

Let's have a beer drinking contest. [laughs]

Everybody that can pound, like,

[group laughing]

All right.

[metal clinking] [dramatic music]

- [Announcer] To put the yeast in this beast,

the firetruck will be gutted,

making room for three vessels.

A kettle to heat water, a mash tun to soak malt,

and a fermentor to turn sugar into alcohol

and, 10 days later, water into beer.

Propane burners will heat the kettle

and a chiller will go in to cool the fermentor.

A pump will transfer the fluids from one vessel to another.

Got it?

[child burping]

[upbeat music]

[tires squealing]

Day two comes spinning into the garage.

The build team shows up ready for a beer run.

[upbeat rock music]

Climbing down from the Rocky Mountains is John Legnard,

master brewer for Coors.

From Queens, New York, master welder Otto Petersen.

From Marshall, Texas, firefighter and beefcake fabricator,

George Plumlee.

And staying on from the design

to help beat the L out of our monster,

brewer Lee Chase and tank expert Ron Krol.

[upbeat rock music]

- Yeah, this is kind of like "Monster Garage"

imitating life,

'cause usually you work really hard, then you have a beer.

Same thing.

We're gonna work really hard on this and have some beer.

I think the two things with this one,

it's just gotta be cool looking.

I mean, we can chrome all the wheels and diamond plate

and polish all those steps and all that stuff,

but making the whole brewery in the back,

like we talked about,

you know, like a microbrewery.

So it's... - Right.

- Is there any way to get a copper lid on any of those tanks

or any of those fun things?

I think that'd be- - Yeah,

that's what I told them.

I can make copper lids to whatever.

- We'll talk about that one. - Yeah.

- I don't think this one's so much a mad thrash

as it is, you know, to work clean.

[upbeat rock music]

on the science of beer making,

the crew tears into the stocked firetruck.

I wouldn't change jobs for the world.

We wait 'til like the last two days, then we really...

- Hey, we need a hammer. - Yeah. [laughs]

Like mig or stick?

[welder whooshing]

[metal clanging]

- [Jesse] Let's get this tank outta there.

- They don't need that anymore.

- [Announcer] Jesse discovers the 40-year-old firetruck

still has some juice left.

- Whoops. [laughs]

- [Announcer] To make room for its new beer tanks,

the firetruck has to lose its old 500-gallon water tank.

Otto goes low and cuts the pipe

running from the tank to the bump.

[upbeat rock music] [welder whooshing]

[sirens wailing]

[builders chattering] [engine sputtering]

- [Announcer] There's still a lot of water in the tank,

so they take the truck outside to drain it.

[angry rock music]

Once emptied, they chained the bulky tank to the forklift.

After tugging and pulling, 1,500 pounds of crust and rust

comes out like a bad tooth.

Now the team has the space they need to get the job done.

- This is perfect. It's gonna make a good brewery.

- All right, let's get it inside.

[upbeat rock music]

- We could make a nice floor,

like outta some two-inch square with some cross stringers

and use some expanded metal.

That way it's, you know.

- Oh, what I was looking at doing is

we've already got a nice base here.

Just clean this up and taking some square inch and a half,

to bring the same plane and just brace it out.

- Do a nice uniform. - Right, it's a nice floor.

- Flat. - Well, at least we know

this thing'll hold the water weight.

- Right. - Yeah.

- We still haven't gotten these doors off.

That one's cut completely free in front of you.

- Well, you guys measure, I'll start,

I'll cut on this and get it out.

- What do you think, Otto?

You cool? - Yeah.

You want me to do that? - Nah, I can do it.

- I know you can, you know.

Give me a chance.

- You can supervise. - Yeah.

- [Announcer] Jesse takes on the demolition

of the heavy duty doors.

[upbeat rock music]

[metal clanging]

- [Lee] Yeah, I'll take that one. Look at that.

- No wonder our natural resources are depleted.

[upbeat rock music continues] [welder whooshing]

- [Announcer] Even Jesse has a hard time

beating this truck into submission.

[welder whooshing]

After hours of cutting and pounding,

the back of the truck is finally gutted.

- Tomorrow, we can brew.

Well, almost.

- Maybe a couple days. - We're close.

We'll have a good floor up tomorrow.

- Beautiful job.

What is it? [group laughing]

- So we'll just continue like we are tomorrow.

Get the platform done.

Get everything fit and up there and ready.

You know, we still got the hard stuff,

is refrigeration and the burner and all that stuff, so.

- [Announcer] That's it for day two.

The James g*ng burned their way

through the stubborn firetruck.

Now all they need to do is persuade it to make beer.

Otto's been torching and scorching up a storm.

and then the mash tun

where the malt will be soaked in hot water.

and we primarily build stainless steel tanks

for the wine and brewing industry.

Making beer is a great deal. It's a lot of fun.

- Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. - Oh.

- [Schwag] Will Monster beer stand people on their heads?

[attendee snarling]

These questions and more will soon be answered.

Stay tuned.

♪ Monster, Monster Garage [bubbles burbling]

- [Announcer] It's the last day

in the "Monster Garage" six pack.

It's time for brewers John and Lee to bring this build home.

The pressure's on for the beer making dudes.

Jesse's here early, pushing for a fast finish,

but he's not looking to drink.

He wants to drive.

- 'Cause I got a race, man, tonight, so.

Well, hopefully we'll be ready to brew

by the time I split the race, then.

- [Announcer] "Monster Garage" gives Jesse the opportunity

to satisfy his need for speed.

Tonight he's running his new Figure 8 car

out at Irwindale Speedway.

[engine roaring]

He'll also race in the NASCAR Super Late Model Twin 50s,

but work comes first.

- I guess I could make a little hat for that,

the top of that smokestack.

[upbeat rock music]

- [Announcer] The pump that will transfer water and beer

from one tank to the next gets mounted.

The kettle needs cleaning, and John dives right in.

Anybody got a match?

The propane is attached to the burners.

It's time to fire it up and hope it doesn't blow up.

The Monster minister offers a short prayer.

- Do you wanna give it the old

my head, chest, and both shoulders hurt? [chuckles]

- It's time to get cooking.

[upbeat rock music] - Woo!

- [Ron] Oh yeah.

- [Announcer] Now that they've got fire,

Jesse starts making the copper lid for the smokestack.

[energetic rock music]

- So just make a little mound, just put it like that.

That'd be good?

Is that cool?

- [Announcer] Jesse gets an update from the master brewer.

- Technically, we started brewing beer

'cause we're heating up water,

and that's the first step in the brew day.

- All right, well, let's get all cleaned up

and get everything buttoned up,

and then by that time I'll be done with that.

- [Announcer] A watched tank never boils,

so Jesse heads back to his lair at West Coast Choppers

to perform some copper-smithing magic.

- See, it's not scratching it though.

It's not digging in like the regular shrinking does.

[copper rattling]

It's just grabbing the metal and pushing it closer together.

- [Announcer] He's got the skills to pay all our bills.

- It's not hot. - No?

- Hey, there's that thing I just made.

- [Lee] Nice.

[metal clanking] Oh.

This is like 900 degrees coming outta here though.

[Jesse groans] Got a limited amount of time

before my hands catch on fire.

- Just put it down, put it in.

It looks pretty, like, what-the-hell-looking, you know?

No one's gonna wanna rear-end that thing when it's on.

- [Announcer] The main ingredient arrives.

Sacks of malt, a custom blend provided by Coors.

It was milled down at Stone Brewery,

and now it's ready for the soaker.

But the kettle's having a hard time

getting the water up to cooking temperature.

- It's getting there.

- [Announcer] 180 degrees.

There's nothing Jesse can do but wait.

- Can you turn it up higher?

I don't think you can rush good beer.

- Pretty close right now. - All right.

All right then.

- You need patience when you're making beer.

- [Announcer] Patience,

for a man who calls himself Way Fast Whitey?

- The beer will be ready when the beer is ready.

- Hey, Otto. - Bring the tape measure down.

- [Jesse] Do you understand how all this works?

- No. - Me neither.

None of them guys could weld though.

- Yeah. - So we got 'em.

- Yeah, you know- - They can make beer,

but they can't make the thing that makes beer.

- Yeah.

- [Announcer] Finally, the water hits 180 degrees

and gets transferred into the mash tun.

It's time for the soak.

The malt goes in the hot water, which breaks it down,

releasing the sugar locked in the grain starch.

The end result is the sweet liquid called wort.

And that's beer making 101, worts and all.

- [John] Whoa!

- You know, tell me what to do, man.

I tell you guys what to do. [John laughing]

- [Announcer] Jesse's taking to this brewing thing

like a pro.

He enlists his favorite builder to join in.

- Come stir this, Otto.

We want our beer imported. [group laughing]

Only kidding.

See that, Otto?

We're making beer, man.

so it keeps it from getting dry.

- [Jesse] Oh, now you're getting all bossy.

You don't do [beep] the whole week,

and then now you're the boss. [group laughing]

has Jesse all touchy-feely.

- This is boring.

This isn't doing a wheelie. - Slide this thing up.

- Hurry up and dump that [beep] in here

With the brew officially underway, Jesse calls it.

That's their job, not Jesse's.

He's got a date with a Figure 8 and a race car.

He heads out to the speedway

and brings Otto, Ron, and George along for the ride.
