The show is about to begin.

[heavy metal music builds]

Keep your heads down, and don't go out on a limb-

♪ 'Cause you just might lose it ♪

[young child screams]

Something's wrong! Jesse doesn't like his new monster.

- Make it go away.

- [Schwab] It's a heavy metal dream alter.

Jesse thinks it's a lightweight.

- A PT Cruiser with a shredder in it.

Ooh!

I couldn't be into it less.

- [Schwab] It wasn't his idea.

- [Jesse] This is Hollywood guys,

trying to think of something that's cool that really ain't,

they can dream up all kinds

of guys in squirrel outfits. Outfits.

- [Schwab] TV or not TV?

Jesse, don't dance.

- Make it go away, quiick.

- [Schwab] Look out!

[car squeals] [wood chipper shreds]

Everything's going into the shred on this one.

[eerie sound effect plays]

- [Announcer] Join us now as Jesse

and his g*ng of maverick mechanics

rip, grind, and burn,

[glass shatters]

transforming ordinary street vehicles

[expl*si*n echoes]

into monster machines in "The Monster Garage."

[theme music plays]

[vehicle squeals]

This week's challenge, take a 2002 PT Cruiser,

[chipping machine rumbles]

and transform it into an extreme tree-chipping machine.

[wood falls]

The rules: when built,

the monster machine must appear to be stuck.

The team can spend no more than $3,000 for parts.

[swoosh sound effect plays] [glass shatters]

[bell tolls] [hand swipes paper against the table]

Jesse and his crew have seven days and nights.

On the first day, they design.

For the next five, they build.

[heavy metal fades in]

And on the seventh day, they race.

[cars race by]

If successful, each team member takes home a $3,400 set

of Mac tools, and the clock starts now.

[car crashes] [expl*si*n echoes]

[music increases in volume] [tires squeal]

Smoking tires and burning rubber. Jesse delivers the goods.

PT Cruiser, it's time to meet your monster.

[car squeals]

The sporty hatchback comes in hard, followed close behind

by the hand selected design team.

[soft, upbeat music plays]

Their challenge: turn the Cruiser

into a tree-chewing, chip-spitting beast.

[wood chipper rumbles]

- 'Sup, guys.

- How's it going?

- How you doin'?

[hands smack]

- Pretty good, how're you?

[hands smack]

- 'Sup, Jess?

[sound effect wooshes] [motorcycle rumbles]

- [Announcer] Jesse James, a direct descendant

of the legendary outlaw,

has made his name building custom choppers,

but this week, he builds a custom chipper.

[soft record scratch]

A career change?

- Nope.

- [Announcer] Not likely.

Jesse lays his chips on the table.

- We should just make it the most compact,

cleanest shredder. That's it.

Make it work? Cool.

Make it totally custom looking, totally stealth.

Instead of trying to make it dumb.

- It's gonna look- come on.

Come down to how cool it looks at the end,

though, on the outside.

[upbeat tense music plays]

- [Announcer] For Pete Finland,

a custom painter and automotive artist,

making things look cool is both a job and an affliction.

- It's a curse. I can't leave anything alone.

Have to mess with everything.

Nothing's perfect the way it is.

Something needs to be cut or changed.

Moved around, lowered, raised.

- [Announcer] Pete is one of a handful

who practiced the dying art of hand pin-striping.

- And people will stand back here and they'll look

and see things in the design sometimes,

even though they're not meant to be.

It's awesome seeing something that I had done

that someone else is enjoying and being proud of.

- Now what actually grabs this stuff is it got two blades

in there to turn?

- Or actually, the first thing

that's gonna grab it is, there's a wheel

driven by hydraulics.

[upbeat tense music plays]

- [Announcer] For the past 16 years,

Mick Gifford has made chipping wood his career of choice.

- I sell brush chippers for a living.

I come from a farming background,

and happened to walk into Morbark one day,

and took a job.

- [Announcer] In Mick's line of work,

nature-lover takes on a different meaning.

- I can walk through a woods, and say there's nothing there

that Morbark can't tear down and make into little pieces.

I love what I do.

This drum is turning at around 2200 RPMs,

so it's really singing as it goes around.

- [Announcer] Mick's choice of chipper is a hydraulic fed

drum-style machine.

- [Mick] As that knife comes around

and makes contact against that anvil,

[knife slides repeatedly against metal]

that's what actually produces the chip.

- I think the biggest thing is fitting everything in there.

We need to find a motor, find the the jaws,

and stuff like that and, and,

- [Mick] Right.

- Plot it out. Since it's limited space

and this thing's pretty small.

- You got some dealers around, and I can get ahold of them

and get our hands on a chipper.

[upbeat rock plays]

- [Announcer] Mick's confident he can score a tree grinder.

- Where are we sh**ting the chips? Just anywhere?

- What about coming out the roof?

- We should wire it and have it come out,

and then straight and funnel.

So, it's like rooster tails of junk, both-

- [Pete] Would going all over the place.

- Yeah, going both ways. That would be kind of cool.

- [Announcer] Pete designs a back door

that will open wide to swallow trees.

As the plan forms, Mick warns them.

Tree limbs aren't the only limbs the chipper devours.

[electricity buzzes] [person yells]

- Guys lose their hands, their feet.

A couple guys that just happen

to fall into it, get caught up, whatever.

And I, mean, once they're gone,

they don't come back and tell you what happened.

[Jesse makes an expl*si*n noise]

[a wood chipper whirs and grinds] [someone yells]

- Alright, let's get after it.

- Okay.

- No time like the present.

- [Announcer] The design ends, and the plan is set.

The chipper will be mounted in the back seat

of the PT Cruiser.

The rear hatch will open from both the top

[wood whipper grinds]

and the bottom like a hungry mouth.

Whatever gets fed into its monster molars will spew out

of two blow holes in the roof.

[heavy metal plays]

[marker squeaks]

[car screeches]

[electricity fizzles]

Day two.

[garage door rumbles open]

The build team marches into the Monster Garage.

[metal door slides open]

It's time to change a PT Cruiser

into a tree- chomping chipper.

[metal door slides shut]

Jesse James is ready for battle.

Erich Wood all from Edge water, Maryland

brings his welding expertise.

Mechanical engineer Johan Bakker

hails from Brighton, Michigan.

brings his building ability.

Pete Finlan from San Diego, California

carries over his creative confidence.

And the champ of chipping, Mick Gif ford

from Blanchard, Michigan stays on to build.

[guitar performs a riff]

[marching drum beat plays]

The troops are assembled and ready to receive their orders.

What they don't know is that General James

has a monster-sized chip on his shoulder.

The first thing he wants to shred

[paper rips]

is the challenge itself.

- I'll say it. It's simple and easy.

This is Hollywood guys trying to think

of something that's cool that really ain't.

- Yeah.

For the sake of selling a TV show.

[someone laughs]

This is kind of like someone coming to my shop

and asking me to build a moped.

[bicycle bell dings]

A PT Cruiser with a shredder in it.

Ooh!

Yeah.

[the word "yeah" echoes in a high-pitch]

- Which one of these-

- [Announcer] Jesse's not happy,

and the PT is gonna pay.

[high-energy synth pop plays]

[seat slams onto the ground]

[seat slams onto the ground] [someone groans]

[drill whirs]

[metal is pulled from metal]

[tool whirs]

- I dunno what they are, but I don't think we need them.

[seat smashes into the ground]

[piece of the car falls onto the ground]

[pieces of the car are thrown onto the ground]

There isn't a whole hell of a lot of room in here,

but the challenge will be getting it in.

We're chiseling off little stuff

that normally you would just leave be

because it's costing us a half an inch

of width or an inch of width.

You just see a silly little seatbelt bracket here.

Maybe the difference between getting that unit

in there and not getting it in there. So, out it comes!

[pieces of the car are thrown onto the ground]

[guitar riffs]

- [Announcer] The back end is down to bare metal.

[heavy metal plays]

[a wood chipper whirs]

Mick, the master of mulch, breaks the crew

for a crash course in busting branches.

- Here's what we're looking to do right here, guys.

- Jesus!

- Don't ever stand behind the machine feeding brush.

So, let's keep that in mind

as we're putting this project together.

- [Johan] Why?

- Well, you're more apt to trip and get caught up,

and, uh, you wouldn't look good against the wall.

[people laugh]

[wood whipper whirs]

- [Announcer] This chipper goes

for a mere $19,000.

At that price,

[cash register dings]

the chipper would make mulch of the budget.

[guitar riffs]

[vehicle beeps]

Mick has used his connections

to wrangle a monster deal on a used chipper.

[cash register dings]

[receipt prints]

[hammer hits against metal]

[tools grind]

They set about the business

of pulling a chip off the old chipper.

[hammer bangs against metal]

[tools grind]

[tool whirs]

[metal falls]

The fluid reservoir is salvaged.

It holds gasoline for the motor

and hydraulic fluid for the feed mechanism.

[metal clanks]

- [Matt] You ain't sure if the engine runs?

- No. We'll assume it runs.

- I don't want to ask you, me anything.

[someone laughs]

- It should fire. Should fire.

- I like it does fire. It will fire.

I say we fire it up.

[metal grinds loudly]

[vehicle stalls]

[vehicle stalls]

[engine roars to life]

- [Announcer] In any garage,

this is the sound you want to hear.

- Do run. That sounds so much nicer.

- [Mick] You like that?

[metal scrapes the floor]

- [Announcer] The engine is free.

[hammer bangs against wood]

Onto the chipper.

[tool whirs]

[metal falls to the ground]

- [Jesse] That's the blade right there.

- Nice.

- [Jesse] Yeah.

- [Mick] That's pretty sharp.

- [Jesse] Yeah.

[machine whirs multiple times] [someone yells]

[cartoon banana-peel slip sound effect plays]

[soft drums play]

[people laugh]

- [Announcer] Jesse has found something

he likes in this project.

- All right, well that's kind of cool.

- [Mick] Yeah.

[record scratches]

- [Announcer] The crew struggles with trying to jam a gallon

of monster into the half-pint Cruiser.

- We don't need any of that safety crap.

The jaws could be right here.

Just cut these wheel wells out to gain some more space.

[heavy metal plays] [tools whir]

[plastic falls to the ground]

[tools whir]

[metal and tools fall to the ground]

- [Announcer] They've cut what they can on the car.

Now it's time to trim the tree chipper.

- Trying to get it cut down.

We'll split it right up this weld right here.

- Up this seat?

- [Mick] Yep.

- Bust these loose.

- [Mick] Yep.

[fire erupts]

[electricity fizzles]

- [Announcer] Erich torches the chipper free

from the trailer.

[flame torch squeals]

[car skids]

[metal bangs against metal]

- She's loose. Suck her up out of there.

[metal bangs against metal]

- [Jesse] Chipper sure is.

[metal rips from metal]

[tool clicks multiple times]

- [Mick] We're probably dealing

with six or 700 pounds right here.

We ready?

- [Jesse] Yeah.

[metal bangs against metal]

[high-energy music plays]

[metal bangs and squeals against the ground]

- [Announcer] All hands work to wobble the chipper

over and into the cruiser.

- [Erich] Pick it up.

Anytime.

- Well, this has to go over a little bit.

- [Announcer] But the chipper is not going

to go without a fight.

[metal bangs against the ground]

- [Pete] What was that?

- That the hydraulic came loose.

[metal bangs]

- It broke-

- The lift!

- It broke and died.

[people laugh]

- Get it off there a little.

- Okay, now we need a lift!

- [Mick] That broke the mountain side.

- [Pete] Broke the pin right out.

- Well it turned the pin into a banana. Look at that.

You want to metallic and general fatigue analysis?

- The technical terminology is-

- Too heavy.

[someone laughs]

It's just too heavy.

[synth music buzzes]

- [Announcer] The cracked crane is a sign

from the garage gods.

[creepy laughter erupts]

The PT needs to be pumped up

before it can handle the weight of the chipper.

[metal hits the ground]

- Definitely that stock suspension's not gonna

take the, the weight of this.

So, we're gonna put airbags on it.

- If we put a pair of 2,600 pounds bags in there,

we can hold 5,000 pounds in the back of a PT Cruiser.

- [Announcer] The bags will handle the weight.

Space is still an issue.

[high-pitched beeps ring out]

[bell dings]

- The chipper.

- [Jesse] That's right there.

[marker squeaks]

This is gonna be the engine, here.

- [Mick] Motor.

We're all gonna feel a lot better once

that chipper's sitting inside that car.

[metal bangs] [tense music plays]

- At the end of a routine first day in the garage,

Jesse walks in and drops the monster of all bombs.

[bombs explode] [people scream]

Listen as he gives his troops their marching orders

for the next day.

- Let's start at 9:00 AM tomorrow,

and we'll work all day until it's done,

and we'll finish it in one day.

[synth powers down]

- [Announcer] Say what?

[the phrase "say what" echoes deeply]

- Let's start at 90, 90, 90, 90,

tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow.

We'll finish it in one day. Finish it one.

[synth surges]

- [Deep Voice] This is gonna suck!

- I'm trying to send the message home

that don't give us easy, un-challenging things to do.

[someone laughs]

- [Announcer] Jesse hates the monster mulcher so much,

[machine growls]

he's willing to take down everything with it:

the rules, the team's time in the garage,

and the show.

- I just don't wanna prolong the agony.

Let's make it go away, away, away.

[snare beat plays]

The monster mulcher's taken a direct hit

and it's sinking fast.

The crew walks out shellshocked.

We're heading into strange waters.

Tomorrow's shaping up to be a day

like no other in the Monster Garage.

- We're good. Now I'm interested in this project.

[synth buzzes]

[cymbals are hit] [bass lick rings out]

[lighter, high-energy music plays]

- Monster Garage factoid:

based on previous world records, 29 clowns can be stuffed

inside a PT Cruiser.

[people laugh]



[people scream]

[electricity buzzes]

[electricity buzzes]

♪ Monster, monster garage

[heavy metal plays] [buzzer buzzes]

- [Announcer] The team is back in the garage.

It's day three, they think.

Jesse comes in with a roar.

[motorcycle rumbles]

What does he think?

- I don't think, I only react.

[someone groans in pain]

- [Announcer] But he's no actor,

and he won't pretend to like a tree chipper for television.

It might only be day three,

but it's still the last day he wants to spend

with a mild-mannered mulcher.

[metal clangs]

- All right, so here's the plan.

The, uh, the producers don't think it's a good idea

if we finish in one day, 'cause it makes for bad TV.

But I don't really give a [bleep/squelch] about that

because that's all as long as it's gonna take us to do it.

[metal chain jumps]

So, I don't think we should purposely slow down

for the sake of TV. You know, if, so,

let's keep with Plan A, knock this thing out,

[synth buzzes]

make it mulch in one day,

and then they can dream up all kinds of, you know,

guys in squirrel outfits and stuff like that

to make the show better.

[synths buzz]

- [Announcer] Jesse's one day plan:

transplant the chipper, rework the back door,

install the airbags,

and have the Cruiser mulching by midnight.

- I don't see this as TV,

and I'm not gonna do stuff for the sake of TV.

This is just work and a job. So, that's what I do.

[Jesse chuckles]

I don't care what anybody thinks.

- Can we come back for a better challenge, maybe?

We get a second try at something more challenging?

- [Jesse] Yeah.

[people talk over each other]

- [Erich] New season.

- Hey, if they don't like it and they think we finished

too fast, well that's their fault

for giving us something too easy to make.

- [Matt] Yeah.

- So that's it. Let's go.

- Getting it.

- So?

- [Announcer] The first task is to build something

to secure the heavy chipper components inside the car.

- This is the back of it.

We make a square frame out

of tubing, and we'll have a whole frame

that that'll set in so we can position it in there

to line up the belts and everything.

[saw buzzes]

- [Announcer] Time to get to work.

The first piece of square tubing goes under the knife.

[metal clangs]

[torch whirs]

[electricity buzzes]

And team welder Erich Wood all goes under the mask.

- I don't need to prove anything to anybody.

My work speaks for itself.

[metal clangs]

- [Announcer] A master welder in the DC area,

[electricity buzzes]

Erich followed in his father's footsteps.

- My dad had a welder in, in the garage,

so I started just going out

and practicing on scrap metal that my dad would bring home.

[electricity buzzes]

And then now, I got to where

I started getting pretty decent at it.

I certified my first time down at a nuclear powerhouse.

[electricity buzzes]

I mean there's a 90% failure rate,

and I, I passed it my first time.

That made my, my dad, who's a welder also,

that made him super proud.

[electricity buzzes]

You never brag about your equipment or your ability,

my worst dream, because one's evident

and the other one soon will be.

I try to live my life by that.

[metal clanks]

- The frame goes in.

Jesse's forced time crunch has forced Pete and Matt

to rethink their door design.

It will no longer open in the middle.

- The whole bumper is gonna hinge down

and away from the car.

[tools whir]

[heavy metal builds]

- The new plan calls for the door to hinge at the bottom

and fold down like a landing craft.

[welding tool sparks]

A few welds later and the first stage

of the door mechanism is complete.

- [Mick] Outstanding!

- [Jesse] That's a beauty.

[hands smack]

- [Pete] He works good.

[metal clangs] [heavy metal plays]

- [Announcer] Matt Zabas,

owner of the Fabrication Shop "13 Choppers,"

specializes in transforming stock Ducati racers

into one of a kind choppers.

- I grew up with choppers. I love choppers,

but I like to go fast, too.

[motorcycle revs]

I like to get around a corner without

scraping half my bike off.

[metal clangs]

So it's kind of somewhere in between world.

I build a frame from scratch,

[electricity buzzes]

designed it out all out

of some numbers in my head that for me,

optimized the performance.

Bend it a little bit to give it a nice pretty look,

but mostly it's designed around a performance aspect.

[engine revs]

When it's a battle between form and function,

function comes first,

and then you squeeze that form right up next to it

so it looks good too.

[metal clangs] [tense music plays]

- [Johan] That's as far back as we're going,

so let's burn it down.

[electricity buzzes]

- [Announcer] Less than seven hours to go,

the clock ticks closer to their deadline.

[clock whirs]

[tools whir]

A welded bolt band-A*DS the hoist problem, and they're off.

[metal clicks]

The chipper engine goes in first.

- [Erich] Coming down.

Easy.

- [Announcer] The engine fits,

and so does Jesse.

- [Mick] Wait all that rail.

- [Jesse] Party time. Ow!

- [Announcer] Next in,

the heavy and hard-to-handle chipper.

[metal bangs]

- [Jesse] Oh, that bolts bending too now.

- [Johan] It is?

- [Jesse] When it's high enough, don't even wait,

just shove it in.

[metal clangs]

Okay, hold on.

- [Mick] Here we go.

- Yeah,

- [Johan] Ok.

- [Pete] Go ahead if you want to go in a little bit more.

We're on the frame, so we're cool.

- [Mick] Go.

[metal squeals] [someone groans]

- [Jesse] Didn't even rip the rubber.

[people laugh]

- [Mick] Yeah, I think it went this time.

- [Jesse] That's the cake.

[metal clangs]

- You wanna kind of walk it?

- [Jesse] Yeah, there you go.

That doesn't take up too much room, now does it?

- [Johan] No.

[upbeat music plays]

- [Together] One, two, three.

- [Announcer] And finally, Johan welds in the gas tank.

[welding tool sparks]

- That is the gasoline supply,

the vital fluid of life.

[metal clangs]

- [Announcer] Johann Bakker keeps his wild side

under wraps while

working his day job as a mechanical engineer.

- I design mechanical hardware

and systems for Unisys Corporation.

[metal scrapes]

And what I mostly work on is high speed,

document- processing machinery.

- [Announcer] Sounds like a lot of paper pushing.

[machine clicks]

But out in the snow country of Michigan,

the Dutch-born Bakkar keeps it real

with all things great and furry.

[machine clanks]

[animal grunts]

- We raise llamas, we raise horses,

uh, we have some dogs running

around the place, and we have some acreage.

My wife and I both really enjoy the country lifestyle.

We're surrounded by life all the time.

What if you just get outta the way?

[llama grunts] [someone chuckles]

[metal clangs]

- [Announcer] The focus shifts from getting things in

to getting them out.

[metal clangs and echoes]

- And we gotta open that roof up.

The split's going to come right down the center

of this transition right here.

[tool whirs and echoes]

There's gonna be a plate in there that moves back

and forth to determine which way them chips are actually

gonna come up out of that roof, so.

- Roof.

- Roof, roof!

- He just usually just points

'cause I can't understand too much

he says. That accent- screws me up.

[saw whirs] [heavy rock plays]

[tools whir]

- That's it.

- Take on that.

[plastic smacks]

- He is Mr. Body Saw.

Nobody uses a body saw like he does.

It's beautiful. Guy could write his name with the thing.

[mellow rock plays]

- [Announcer] The air suspension goodies arrive.

A half price deal from EAI keeps the cost down

on raising the car.

- That's nice too.

[cash register dings] [guitar riffs]

[receipt prints]

[screen wooshes]

[heavy rock plays] [tools whir]

- [Announcer] Erich busts the springs

to make room for the airbags,

but Jesse thinks they should wait.

- I think the suspension and stuff, we need the wheels.

'Cause they're a lot bigger than those are giant.

So as far as meeting our challenge

to tonight's, you know, deadline.

All we wanted to do tonight is just

get that thing in and running. Shred something with us.

- [Announcer] All day the harried crew

have been driving hard

to reach Jesse's finish line,

but now he says he just wanted

to see the chipper functioning.

- I was kind of under the impression,

like, we were gonna have all that stuff done,

but I wasn't part of that decision making process.

- [Announcer] The team's confused

about their goal, but not Jesse.

- We're getting done what I said we'd get done.

I said we'd get the chipper in and installed,

and everything was only one day's worth of work.

[hammer bangs]

Roll the tape.

[tape rewinds]

We'll be able to throw stuff in the back

and make it shred stuff by tomorrow.

Not all the custom stuff, just the mulching part.

- [Announcer] The truth was in the tape. It's time to check.

[saw whirs]

[engine powers up]

[chipper buzzes loudly]

[glass breaks]

[chipper buzzes loudly]

[glass breaks]

[chipper buzzes]

[glass breaks]

- We can't sweep up now, but it works.

- [Pete] Forget the trees.

- Yeah.

- Just find stuff to put in there.

- [Johan] Yeah.

[glass shards clink]

Jesse, did we meet the challenge?

- Well, I don't know. You tell me.

- We said we'd be chipping by midnight. I got 8:23 PM.

[glass shards clink]

- I told you I'm, if one thing I'm good in

is gauging how much time it takes to do something.

- Do we get our tools now?

[group laughs]

- [Announcer] The answer to that question is complicated.

The team answered Jesse's call and met his challenge,

but this is reality television,

and the reality is they're not done yet.

The back door isn't finished,

The airbags are still sitting in the garage floor,

and there's no wheels.

Don't uncork the champagne just yet.

[glass breaks]

[dark rock plays]

Monster Garage factoid:

the PT and PT Cruiser stands for "personal transportation."

Other model abbreviations include "RX"

for "rotary experimental" in the Mazda, RX seven,

and "GTO" originated by Ferrari

and used by Pontiac for the "Gran Turismo Omolagato."

[bubbles pop]

Day four begins a little late.

Last night's chipper shower made a mess of the lights,

and someone's got to fix them.

- Hey, what happened up there?

[saw buzzes]

- See that yet? Gotta fix the light.

[cash register dings] [guitar riffs]

[receipt prints]

- [Announcer] The chipper's powerful performance

has prompted a major design change.

[chipped wood flies loudly]

Only one of the holes in the roof will be used

to discharge chips.

- Well we ran test version one point zero, didn't we?

And you stick with what you know works.

[chipped wood flies loudly]

I mean, we know it throws chips an awfully long way.

There's no question about that.

There's plenty of force.

- [Announcer] This change leaves a hole in the project,

but Erich isn't worried.

- I'll take, weld the sheep metal up on the roof.

- [Announcer] Pete begins work on a steel substructure

that will attach the bumper to the rear door.

[tools whir]

[electricity buzzes]

[paper rips]

Back in the air bag department,

Matt gives Johan his first lesson in rolling fat.

- It is very trick. I can't wait

to see those bad boys blown up.

[synths louden]

[electricity buzzes]

- Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.

[electricity buzzes] [tool whirs]

Burn me, burn me, burn me, keep doing it. Keep doing it.

- [Announcer] The rear bags are mounted.

It's onto the front.

They pop out the struts and mount the air cans.

[tool whirs]

Matt wrenches down the last of the suspension hardware.

Pete puts the finishing touches on his reconstructed door.

[welding tool buzzes]

The bumper in the door are now one.

[metal clinks]

- Just like it's supposed to work.

[record scratch]

[heavy metal plays]

- [Announcer] Erich torches open a hole

in the discharge duct.

[tools whir]

The team has decided to create a monster amplifier

by directly routing both engine exhausts

into the discharge tube.

[air flows]

- You're gonna have no muffled sound on the PT Cruiser,

plus the exhaust from the Wisconsin motor running.

It should be terribly loud.

[the word "yeah" is repeated in a deep voice]

[tools buzz]

[metal bangs]

[welding tool buzzes]

- The cruiser's motor and the chipper engine will roar

together in sweet, monster harmony.

- Start your cut.

- [Johan] Over here.

[engine clicks and revs]

- Sounds pretty good.

[person laughs] [high-pitched buzzing sounds]

- [Announcer] That's it for day four.

The team walks out with their ears ringing

and still plenty to do.

[garage door powers down]

[heavy metal plays]

It's day five,

and the team that thought they'd be done in no time

are getting low on time. Maybe coffee will help.

- Sure hope this PT Cruiser

turns out better than this coffee.

[coffee splashes on the ground]

- [Announcer] Erich takes charge of the discharge tube.

- Yeah, this one's gonna come out pretty hard,

so I'm just kind of reinforcing the front of it.

- [Announcer] Matt and Johan get pumped up

on the air suspension.

[welding tool sparks]

Mick turns a hole in the roof into a whole roof,

[welding tool sparks]

and Pete is ready to make his hatchback become a fold back.

But what about Jesse?

- I need to shape some metal into something.

[twangy guitar rock plays]

- Jesse goes back to his roots,

when power hammers were beyond his budget,

and gives the crew a lesson on the English Wheel.

- It's basically just like a hammer, you know?

It's just, just, it's like a linear hammer.

It's just, it's only hitting about that much of the metal.

[metal grinds]

Fastest Olympic sprinters only put

out a quarter horsepower, total.

- [Mick] Yo, hey. All that work coming

outta your arm, right?

- Yeah. So me? Yeah, you know,

I'm only doing a quarter horsepower,

maybe at my strongest, you know, in a power hammer

this five horsepower gear-driven motor.

[metal softly grinds]

But a hammer, you know I'd be done by now.

I wouldn't be able to hear,

and all my fillings would be loose, but I'd be done.

- I read somewhere once that guys who work in this kind

of work tin work and and metal forming like this,

tend to be generally bad tempered.

[tools clang]

- Not me, not me, not me.

[object shatters three times]

- [Deep Voice] Break it, it break it, break it, break it.

- I feel better now.

- [Announcer] This handcrafted piece is the beginning

of a custom built opening for the chipper.

- A little bit more in there, yeah.

[soft rock plays] [welding tool sparks]

Big finishes filling the void in the roof,

but Erich doesn't like what he sees.

Excessive heat from the welding torch has warped the roof.

- I don't like seeing other people screw up something

that I could have done right the first time.

[bell chimes]

- [Announcer] Determined to fix the foul up,

Erich goes to get the secret solution

to his bubble trouble: ice.

[ice smacks the counter]

- [Erich] Hey, receipt please.

[cash register dings] [heavy rock plays]

[receipt prints]

- [Announcer] Erich tries an old body repair trick:

heat, then ice.

[metal squeals]

Heat, then ice.

The rapid temperature shifts should make the

roof pop into shape.

There's only one problem: Erich has never done this before.

[record scratch]

- I try to duplicate what I've seen other people do,

it might work.

- [Announcer] While a bad thing is made worse,

Jesse walks in loaded for cool.

- [Deep Voice] Rim Daddy, ready, rim daddy.

- They're badass.

- [Announcer] A set of Jesse James signature series 20s

with brand new Toyo tires is just what the doctor ordered.

- Very, it's sharp.

- It's got some dopes!

It went from zero to a cool car in 20 inches.

[horn slides]

You could take any car and put some rims on it,

especially if they say Jesse James on the wheel.

[harp rings]

Come on. Can't go wrong with that.

It's like sprinkling sugar on it.

[chimes ring]

- [Announcer] The crew breaks for lunch

and a bull session on shop accidents.

- And this guy was just seating the bead on a car tire.

So he is got the rim on the ground, and he's standing on it,

and then he starts pumping it up with air,

and he gets to a point where the bead unseats,

and it launches him through the garage roof

through the sheet rock.

And they found him hanging stuffed up

in the rafters the next day.

- I believe it. I, there's a, I know a girl

that worked was a airline mechanic,

- [Pete] Uh huh.

and a tire ruptured on a aircraft tire with her like,

what are they, like 180 PSI or something like that,

and it took her arm off at the shoulder.

- I think the best story I'd ever heard though was a guy

that went into a neighborhood to do a removal.

Take a tree down for a guy.

Went in and took the tree down,

fed the, uh, tree through the chipper.

About the time the top of the tree got into the chipper,

he realized the cat was still in.

- No.

- Yeah, the cat went through the chipper.

- [Jesse] Sucks to be a cat.

[cat meows]

[high-energy rock plays]

- [Announcer] It's testing time

for Pete's rear door reconstruction.

[hammer bangs on metal]

- Yeah, man!

- [Announcer] It folds closed perfectly by hand.

Time to give it some power.

- All right.

[cash register dings] [guitar lick plays]

[receipt prints]

- [Announcer] Pete welds a 12-inch stroke actuator

weighted for 300 pounds.

[tool sparks]

[vehicle whirs]

We have liftoff. A major hurdle is cleared.

- [Pete] Yeah!

[gloved hands smack together]

- All right.

- [Announcer] With Pete's door done,

[metal bangs]

Jesse gets cranking on crafting the chipper entries.

[welding tool sparks]

[hammer bangs against metal]

[metal is sanded]

[plastic flips down]

[welding tool sparks]

[hammer bangs against metal]

[metal drags against the floor]

- Busting my a*s right now.

[welding tool sparks]

[saw whirs]

- [Announcer] Jesse cuts, rolls, and welds

[welding tool sparks]

the final fragment of his masterpiece chipper mouth.

[screen swooshes in and out]

Feeding time rapidly approaches.

- The Salvador Dali, uh, shredder.

Whoa!

[sword slides]

It's very inviting. Come on kids,

stick your hand in here.

[flesh squelches]

Oh, sorry.

[soft rock plays]

[vehicle whirs]

- [Announcer] A special delivery arrives.

- Freebies! Isn't it?

[people laugh]

[door shuts]

- [Announcer] An aftermarket grill and bumper

dial up the cool factor.

The crew went two for three on day five.

[paint sprays]

The roof was ruined, but the back end became art.

And Pete's door worked like a charm.

It seems nothing

[gloved hands smack together]

will break their confidence.

- So you guys think we'll make it?

- Figure it out.

- We staying tonight.

[people laugh]

- I was just kidding.

[people laugh]

[heavy metal plays]

- [Schwab] Okay, fans, answer me this.

How many wood trucks can a wood chuck chuck? Who cares?

Jesse's gonna carve someone a new nut hole,

and his cruiser's got a date with a tree,

so stay tuned.

[electricity buzzes]

[electricity buzzes]

- [Announcer] Day six, the final build day.

They begin their work with a quick tally

of tests to complete.

- [Jesse] Pete's got the door.

- The door has passenger side interior.

- [Jesse] Zip tying hose, clearance.

Let's just go.

- Yeah.

- [Jesse] Let's get rolling.

- Okay, get it done.

- Go.

- [Announcer] Matt's got his sheet together,

and is crafting a smooth surface for the inside door panel.

[tools spark and whir]

The door panel is done.

[tool sparks and whirs]

[metal shifts loudly]

A piece of sheet metal makes a monster tongue

for guiding brush into the chipper's mouth.

[higher energy rock fades in]

The airlines and valves are all connected,

[tools clink]

but the cruiser's not hopping.



- This valve is not working.

- It's, it's not.

- It's, it's moving, but it's just letting the air come

right out through the valve.

It's working. It's functioning.

- It's clicking.

- It's not ceiling.

- No. So at this point I'm,

I'm, I'm guessing that this-

- [Johan] You wanna know why?

- Just not what? What do you got?

- We have the dump valves installed

the wrong way round.

They have a direction arrow on them

in which they check. This one, for example,

the direction arrow is the wrong way.

- [Matt] Good thinking!

[heavy metal plays]

[air tank fills]

- The air tank filling is the sound

of the team getting back on track.

Johann does the honors.

[metal pops loudly]

The monster comes to life.

[air pumps and metal bangs]

- What two guys in California will do for a little fun.

[metal bangs repeatedly]

- Yeah!

[people cheer]

- Woo!

- It's really not gonna get any better than that.

- That's awesome.

[soft rock plays]

- [Announcer] With build money to spare,

the crew take off on a mission for mulchable items.

- Ah, there's some firewood right there.

[metal clinks]

- Mick grabs wood.

[wood shuffles softly]

- This is perfect. China.

[plates clink]

- [Announcer] Pete hits the thrift store

for some chip-able treasures.

[plates clink and fall]

- Oops!

- [Announcer] The breaking has already begun.

- That'll make some good noise.

[wood shuffles]

- That's wood.

[motorcycle revs]

More stuff for shredding.

[plates clink]

- This is what I'm putting in

because it's my only bad habit.

I sure wish I could destroy it.

[box falls to the floor]

- [Announcer] And Matt's decided

to make a stand against literature.

[books crash into a pile]

- I don't like to read. I like to spend my time doing

things people write books about.

[saw buzzes loudly]

[air drones]

- All finished.

- [Announcer] It's all smiles

at 5:00 PM on day six.

[vehicle revs]

The chipper's done, and they're heading

to West Coast Choppers for a test run.

[cars drive slowly] [horns honk]

A quick commute turns sour.

A leak in the air suspension lines has dropped 1500 pounds

of chipper on the street.

This unplanned slam has wiped the silly grins

off everyone's face.

- [Pete] All right.

- All right, slow, slow down here.

Right now what you're doing is,

[air pumps]

you making more problems than we started with.

Let's, let's, let's-

- [Matt] Grab onto that.

- [Jesse] We gotta fix that now.

- Well make sure it's the right one.

Grab the one that you say is kinked.

- [Matt] This one.

- That is not. That's the passenger side one.

- Mick, what does this hook up to? Front passenger?

- That's the front driver.

- Connection.

[car horns honk and drive by]

- Okay.

[cars honk]

- I'm losing it.

- Someone ran an airline

through the exhaust setter where

of course it's gonna melt.

[cars honk]

- I'm chipper, I'm not airbag.

We all routed them.

Should've they never routed them

the way they were routed, but.

[twangy guitar plays]

- [Announcer] They repair the damaged line

and zip tie it in place.

The compressor humming means all is forgiven.

- We'll get there. It's all right.

- It's all right.

[Matt and Mick laugh]

- [Announcer] She's up, and she's out.

[car softly drives]

[fireworks explode] [people laugh]

While the team has been fixing, Jesse's been playing.

- [Person] Yeah!

That's all here, now.

- Open it up.

[vehicle whirs]

- [Matt] Next.

- [Jesse] Complaint department.

[vehicle's engine starts up] [heavy rock plays]

- [Announcer] The Cruiser begins its feeding frenzy

by devouring pieces of its old self.

[debris flies]

[eerie sound effect plays]

[debris lands on the ground, roughly]

[toy squeaks]

[debris flies]

[debris explodes]

- Ah! More stuff!

- [Announcer] After a monstrous showing,

the Cruiser earns Jesse's approval.

- Yeah, I like it.

- Good.

- Kind of cool. I like the vigil.

- [Person] Yeah! Ha, ha!

- Cool.

[fireworks explode]

- [Announcer] The build day ends

with a bang, and a big mess.

Tomorrow it's off to the races.

[debris is sweeped]

But first,

[tool whirs]

the PT Cruiser will undergo a major makeover

at the hands of Tom Pruitt of Damon's Motorcycle Creations.

Tom uses a stud g*n,

[stud g*n clicks]

then slide hammer to pull the roof out of its misery.

[tools slide and click]

[torch flames softly]

He shrinks and hammers the roof into shape.

[hammer bangs against metal]

Body filler covers the gaps, and he sands her smooth.

[sanding tool whirs]

[water sprays]

Tom's buddy Steve Bigelow has been called in

to turn the wood chipper into a magnificent woody.

[soft guitar music plays]

- First step in finishing this car is we're gonna apply

the hand-cut mahogany veneer and we're gonna come in

and, uh, strip it with ash.

And then Tom's gonna take over from there.

[tool whirs softly]

- I'm gonna come in with some of the BC 25 black base code,

which is a super triple black pigment.

[spray paint sprays]

- [Announcer] No monster vehicle would be complete

without Tom's finishing touch.

[spray paint sprays]

- I am gonna come in here

with some Candy Apple base coat, Root Beer,

[soft synth pop plays]

and to top it off, gonna come in

with some Pagan Gold Candy,

and it's just gonna make this baby glow.

[paint g*n sprays]

Once we have all the candy on, we're gonna unmask the wood,

and we're gonna clear coat the complete PT Cruiser.

[paint g*n sprays]

- [Announcer] No detail is missed

in this tree-chipper transformation.

[soft, glowing synth music plays]

- Should be a masterpiece,

I think Jesse would be proud to drive this PT Cruiser,

and, uh, go out and chip some stuff.

[person laughs]

[heavy rock plays] [camera clicks multiple times]

- [Announcer] Monster Garage Factoid:

debris exits the wood chipper at a speed

of 107.5 miles per hour.

Not quite as fast as the PT Cruiser, which tops out at 118.

[bubbles pop]

- [Schwab] Okay fans! Rise and shine.

A brand new monster all pumped up

They call it West Coast Chipper, and it lives to shred.

and it's heading out to hook up

The head chopper wants

to serve little chipper his first meal.

Victory in the Monster Garage challenge.

[cars drive softly]

- [Schwab] But what says Frankie,

PT Cruises are popping out of the bushes!

- [Frank] Oh, yes, Schwab.

These little fellas always run in packs.

Looks like Chipper's pals have come out to cheer 'em on.

- [Schwab] Now I have seen everything.

[synths build]

- [Frank] Not everything.

Look at that, Schwab.

- [Schwab] You gotta be kidding me!

Roadblock! That's not good.

[car drives softly]

- [Frank] Schwab, this log jam could spell disaster

for West Coast Chipper.

[synths build]

[car door shuts]

[saw buzzes]

[saw cuts wood]

- [Schwab] What's he doing?

Oh yeah, he's dropping the hatch.

[metal bangs]

- [Frank] Check out the choppers on that chipper.

- [Schwab] Can you believe it? This monster doesn't back up,

he fights back. He doesn't back off, he gets it on.

He's gonna eat his way out!

- [Frank] Today's special:

one California Pine tossed and tumbled.

[heavy metal plays]

[chipper eats branches]

- [Schwab] It's chipping up a storm!

- [Frank] It's raining toothpicks!

- [Schwab] Jesse's gotta be wondering where his woody went.

[whistle slides down]

- [Frank] You know what they say, Schwab. Just relax.

- [Schwab] Yeah, but the master fabricator doesn't

like the weight, Frank.

- [Frank] Tell him to hold on, Schwab,

his West-coast chipper's a master masticator.

[chipper crunches materials] [heavy rock plays]

- [Schwab] And it's eating everything in sight!

Watch those hands, boys.

- [Frank] Oh, they better, Schwab.

Wood chippers just don't eat wood.

Each year an average of six careless feeders

lose their lives to its hungry jaws.

- [Schwab] Ouch! What a way to go: human coleslaw.

[chipper eats wood]

Looks like West Coast Chipper made it through, Frank.

[cars drive softly]

- [Frank] The PT parade is back up to speed, Schwab.

- [Schwab] And look Frankie,

the pack is paying tribute to their monster buddy.

[cars honk horns]

How sweet!

- [Frank] West Coast Chipper, we salute you!

[cars honk their horns]

- [Schwab] Now it's on to the challenge at hand, folks.

- [Frank] But Schwab, Where's Jesse?

- [Schwab] You gotta be kidding me! He booked!

[heavy rock plays]

- [Frank] Well! Who needs a challenge

after that gut- busting display, anyhow?

The West Coast Chipper is truly a monster.

[car wheels squeal]

- [Schwab] And Jesse has no time for snoozing,

cruising, or losing.

[motorcycle revs]

'Cause he's got metal to burn, sparks to fly,

the next Monster Garage challenge is just around the Bend!

[garage door clanks open]

[soft music plays] [Mick whistles]

[hands slap]

- Thanks.

- Pete.

- All right, Jesse.

- Appreciate all you guys. All your hard work.

I think this is the first time we're doing like a

MVP for the week.

This crew is pretty solid and steady,

so it's pretty hard to pick.

But I think I'm gonna pick, uh, Pete.

- Aw. Ha!

- [Jesse] Yeah.

- Come on.

- [Mick] He's the man.

- 'Cause, uh, you decided to go

after the part that sucked:

making the door open the other way.

- [Pete] Yeah!
