- [Narrator] This week's challenge:

take a 1984 Porsche 944 and transform it

into the world's fastest golf ball range picker.

The rules, when built, the monster machine

must appear to be stock.

The team can spend no more than 3,000 greenbacks for parts.

[air whooshing]

Jesse and his crew have seven days and nights.

On the first day, they design.

For the next five, they build.

On the seventh day, they race.

to make monster modifications to this jewel

of German engineering.

of the open range is a renowned and revered hero

in the world of custom choppers.

about picking up golf ba*ls.

[upbeat music]

He builds handcrafted range pickers

for a living at his company: Different Designs.

- I like to tweak things.

I like to do things just to see if they can be done.

It'll roll over, pick up a golf ball.

You have a set of fingers.

It's set between your disc assemblies.

When the ball rolls, it'll hit the fingers,

eject it out into a basket system.

The normal ball picker speed's

around five to eight miles an hour.

- [Narrator] But at that speed, the range picker's

an easy target for any nimrod with a nine iron.

Our picker will have to move faster.

- We plan on doing this maybe 50 or 60 miles an hour.

- [Narrator] Pete Pepe commands the pencil.

As a creative designer for Disney animation,

his ideas are anything but Mickey Mouse.

- I just think the skill of just basically

just trying to think outside of the box.

You're basically making something

that is a simple design into something that's cool.

- Golf is never going to be cool as far as I'm concerned.

- You've gotta remember, golfers nowadays

are construction workers.

They're motorcycle builders, car builders.

We don't wear knickers anymore.

'Cause I'm a golfer, I don't wear knickers.

- Sissies. [Pete laughing]

- I wouldn't want to stand in front of Tiger Woods

hitting a golf ball at 150 yards out,

because I've seen him drive

it through 3/4 inch plywood before.

- 3/4 inch plywood? No way. - What?

- Absolutely. - Maybe 3/4 inch cardboard.

[Pete laughing]

- I think the picker's a pretty basic design,

and we probably shouldn't screw with that, you know?

[upbeat music]

- [Pete] This particular Porsche has a very large area

in the back of it, which gives us plenty of room,

I think, in the back side.

Well, that'd be quite a bit of cutting

for it to accept it underneath.

- [Narrator] Fitting the Porsche with a picker

should be easy enough.

But Jesse wants to up the ante.

- Forget the collecting part.

It's the launching them back part.

It's gotta be like a weapon. [voice echos]

- [Narrator] Not only will our picker

dodge the golfers' shots,

it will pick up their ba*ls and return fire.

- I think we should gull-wing the passenger side door.

We want that element of surprise.

So that thing opens up.

- Also, our cannons will be completely hidden

until we decide we want to open

the door up and k*ll everybody.

- Definitely got to put a loud exhaust on it.

- Oh, absolutely.

- I think we got the basic design down.

You know, I think the problems are is

figuring out the feeds,

you know, basically feeding the ba*ls to each cannon.

I've got enough info.

I can do it.

- [Narrator] Jesse calls the design day early.

Tee time tomorrow is 7:00 AM.

He'd rather rest up than worry about the details.

Here's the plan.

They'll build a mechanism that will

pluck the ba*ls into the truck,

and transport them to a g*n hidden behind a gull-wing door.

- I think, just as an ode to all those poor

golf picker guys driving these things,

I think that they finally get their revenge.

Jay uses the power hammer to cut through

the steel metal blocking the gas tank.

Like a German pit crew, they remove the gas tank.

- [Worker] Das is good, ya?

- [Narrator] Now that the Porsche

has been picked to the bone,

it's time to build.

Quickly, the door is removed,

so it can be modified gull-wing style.

[upbeat music]

- Shredding the door, taking some of the weight

off the door itself, so we can make it a little bit lighter.

[plastic ripping]

[saw whirring]

- [Narrator] Jay and Alex team up

to make the gull-wing door fly.

- Cool. [metal clanks]

[upbeat music]

Making it flat requires re-framing.

- We have to reinforce all of this channel right here,

so that it can take the weight of the door.

I'm a custom car builder.

I build custom cars, customary suspension.

[air whooshes]

- [Narrator] For Alex, building k*ller custom cars

is all in the details.

- Kenwood touchscreens, 23-inch neepers,

four Firestone 317 compressors.

You might as well be doing something that you like.

When you get done, you can stand back

and be like, "Yeah, that looks cool." [chuckles]

- [Narrator] The golf ball cannon

is the hot topic for discussion.

- I want it to look like it's raining golf ba*ls.

[air whooshing]

- [Narrator] Jesse thinks this simple tube conveyor

from Mac's shop will do the trick.

- This is what I'm thinking,

like a super-charged something like this.

So when we feed the ba*ls out of the basket

into one tube, in and out.

[ba*ls clanking]

- [Narrator] Alex has another idea.

- [Alex] Look, cause of pressure.

- [Narrator] And Derek agrees.

- Just keep sh**ting them out.

- Maybe the air thing's the way to go, you know?

- [Narrator] Air power is commonplace

in the custom car world.

[metal clicks]

- That ball's gonna haul.

That ball's gonna go.

- [Narrator] But the weapon is worthless without a*mo.

Getting ba*ls to the g*n is job one.

- You three need to work on getting the picker in there,

with a lever to go up and down, and a basket.

[upbeat music]

- [Narrator] Mac heads to his shop,

where he scavenges for parts for the picker,

and gives himself a monster deal.

[jarring rock music]

[register dings] [printer whirring]

Mac returns with picker parts.

[metal clanking]

- This is a drum assembly for a ball picker.

[ball clacking]

[tools whirring]

- [Narrator] Once it's assembled,

the question arises,

how do you mount a picker to a Porsche?

- And we use an arm from right here, from the driver's seat.

Pull it back, and it'd just drop right down.

- St aright down. - Okay, now you want my input?

- Okay. Go for it. - Yep.

- Let's build this here so we clear on both sides.

- Right. - Uh-huh.

- Then we go in here, and we weld a swivel bar

that comes right straight across here.

And it just goes just like this, and just like this.

And swivel off of here.

[upbeat music]

- [Narrator] Before Mac made golf ball pickers,

his life was on a faster track.

- Mac was a drag racer back in the '60s.

[engine whirring]

- Ultimate goal is go as fast as you can go.

[engine whirring]

I got into it, because like I said,

you grow up on a farm or a ranch,

driving Farmall tractors.

We started racing them suckers in the field.

All right, so you just kind of go from one step to the next.

[engine whirring]

We took an old Roadster.

And made it as light as we could make it,

as strong as we could make it,

and go as fast as humanly possible.

It was like getting hit in the a*s with a freight train,

doing about 90 mile an hour.

Some guys say we're nuts.

I would absolutely have to agree.

[air whooshing]

- [Worker] Coming up.

That'll be your door.

- We played this right here,

and the hinge goes right there.

- [Narrator] Jesse sees a problem.

- [Jesse] That's gonna limit us.

- Well, not really.

I was thinking about your position.

Well, yeah.

- [Worker] I thought we were going right

for the kneecap-groin area of the people sh**ting-

- Well, that's not a very big lob, though, you know?

If they're going 100 or 200 yards out-

- So we need to bring it- - Yeah.

- [Worker] Okay. Well we'll still be all right.

- Yeah. I mean as high as we can get it.

- [Worker] Go to about 150 degrees, then.

- Okay. [upbeat music]

- [Narrator] The Monster crew cleaned up on day two,

tearing into and setting up the task to be tackled.

But nothing has been installed,

and the g*n is a big question mark.

Before the first sip of coffee,

Mac lays out the goals for the day.

- Let's see if we can get a g*n together today, okay?

Let's see if we can fire a golf ball today,

I don't care how.

Then that kind of lets everybody's brain rest.

Then why don't the three of us make our test

on this sucker to make sure

we can get it to their g*n, all right?

- [Narrator] Alex and Eric are on g*n duty.

They need valves, fittings, and air cylinders

to rig up the air cannon.

[tense music]

But bad blood over where to get the parts

triggers a shootout.

[b*llet whooshes]

Eric shoots first.

- I think Alex has had a problem

with one of my companies, but I think it's all personal.

- They burned me.

I don't want to give them any kind of foot up.

I don't want to do anything for them.

We agreed yesterday that I wouldn't

if you didn't go through who I wanted to go through.

- I don't want to discuss burning.

Burning's business. This is personal.

I don't want- - This is personal.

- This is a job that we need to get done.

- You want me to help somebody out that burned me.

That's what you're asking me to do.

of custom car building, loyalties can be fierce.

- Let's just get them from somebody else.

It's that simple.

- I don't want to get them from somebody else.

- Dude, I was asked to come to the [beep] show by them, so-

- Okay, well that's what you're saying.

You're saying that you only want to do it your way.

- I'm not doing it my way.

You're doing the door now, right?

Well then do the door, or go weld something, dude.

- Hey, wait a minute. - [beep], get out of my face.

- Come on, relax a little bit.

If it'd gotten much longer,

you'd have found me crawling in my truck

and go home, because I don't need to put up with it.

I'm too old.

Reminds me of my boys.

Both my sons used to work for me.

They'd go out in the parking lot and fist fight.

It'd be over in five minutes.

They'd walk back in the shop,

and go back to work again.

- Instead of going to the parent company,

he wants to go to the distributor.

Go to the parent company.

Go to anybody. Don't go to that person.

- [Worker] Well, as long as we get the car done,

does it really matter?

- People I designed parts for,

and they burned me for them.

And he wants to help them.

And I don't want to help them.

- You gotta have drama.

When you throw any number of people together in a group

and expect them to do one project,

you're gonna have a little bit of confrontation.

- I don't know about the whole arguing and fighting crap.

We're all going for a common goal.

We're fighting against this, not each other.

- [Worker] I just want to get the [beep] car done.

- Well we can get the parts from a dozen other places.

And that's what I'm saying.

Get them from anywhere but those people.

And he had a problem with people

that I wanted to get it from,

so I said let's go to the the parent company.

Let's go to anybody. Or let's buy the parts.

- Yeah. - The valves are a couple,

they're $30 or $40 each.

You know? - Is he coming back?

What's the deal? - I don't know.

He don't want to talk about it,

he just wants to get mad.

I do full fabrication work for about 10 years.

- [Narrator] As Eric's cannon takes shape,

the gull-wing still ain't flapping.

- Maybe we need to not use that actuator.

There's gotta be something else.

- Like what?

- I don't know.

It's just not gonna be as easy as we thought I think.

- This is a hard deal, to go winging the door.

[soft music]

- There's something really simple we're missing.

- I know. We need a fresh insight.

- Yeah, we need somebody who- - We know what it takes.

I just can't see in my mind to get it to work.

- [Narrator] As the clock ticks down on day three,

Jesse gives a post-game wrap-up on the biggest play.

- We're just gonna recap basically what went on.

There was some friction between these two guys,

and they were using a lot of this, their mouths.

When they should have been using this,

punch, to the solar plexus.

And then he should have swung around

and gave him a right to his mid jaw.

But if they were using more of this,

back and forth kicking and punching action,

and a little less motor mouth action,

everything would have been okay.

[air whooshing]

[soft music]
