We've got a ton of work

Narrator: He's five weeks late
due to lockdown,

Time he desperately needed to
recover from last season.

All my friends from back home
didn't come with this year.

That sucks, but I get it,

You know, last year was tough.

And quite honestly,
I spent all winter

Trying to process
how last season went.

It was just --
it was so out of left field.

I never saw it coming.

Never had such a kick
in the a*s like that.

I've never lost that hard.

For one of the first times
in my life,

I didn't know how to handle it,
and I kind of ran,

You know, I really did.

I-I basically hid
I tried to hide from it.

And that just
made things worse.

That's one thing I focused
on this winter

Is getting back to, you know,

Who I am
and how I get things done.

The global pandemic
has put parker schnabel

And his crew
over a month behind schedule.

races to catch up

Running paydirt
through wash plant,

to get some pay up.

This stuff

Nice looking bedrock.

Yeah, this stuff's been going
through the plant real nice.

Despite the late start

This season, parker has
the opportunity of a lifetime

As gold prices skyrocket.

-Thanks, mitch.
-Yeah, no problem.

With gold prices, you know,
on their way up

And fuel prices low,

We need to -- we need to
try to find as many ounces

As we can.

This year, for me,
it's really about

Trying to build
a good w*r chest

And get some money in the bank
in order to buy new ground.

Narrator: Parker's leased
two claims this year,

But he has to pay royalties.

To find ground
he can buy for himself,

He's looking beyond the yukon.

The thing that matters the most
is how good the ground is.

Everything else like
where in the world you are

Or all the other stuff
is secondary.

It's gonna be
a big learning curve.

It's gonna take
a lot of exploration.

It's gonna cost
a lot of money.

Narrator:
To raise the money he needs

And make up for the late start,

Parker's taking
a massive gamble

And opening
a second mining operation.

So one of the best things
that's happened

So far this year,

While bad things have been
going on in the world,

But we got our water license...
[ speaks indistinctly ]

So we're gonna dive into it.

-About 175 claims.
-Wow.

Narrator: In 2017,
parker did a deal

With old-time gold miners
ken tatlow and stuart schmidt

To lease nearly 2,000 acres
of land on the indian river.

We've got a deal.
[ laughs ]

Narrator: But he didn't get
the water license

He needed to run a plant
and abandoned the ground.

What do we have to do
to get a compliance?

Go through
the water license process.

How long does that take?

I don't know, six months.

Narrator: Now three years on,

He has the license
for the promised land,

This virgin ground four miles
west of the last cut

Could hold over 15,000 ounces
of gold worth $26 million

And provide the w*r chest

Parker needs to make his
next big move.

On tony's ground, we had ponds,
we had bogged ground,

We had a whole lot of stuff
to start with.

We don't have any of that now.

It's always hard to start

In the middle of nowhere.

Hasn't been mined close
in either direction.

So there's no place to put
overburden.

Narrator:
Starting from scratch

On virgin ground this late
in the season is a risky move,

But could earn parker
millions of dollars.

To do it, he will strip a layer
of overburden from an area

The size
of three football fields

To get down to
the gold rich pay dirt beneath.

Then dig a pond, build a pad,

And haul in wash plant sluicifer

To start sluicing
in just two weeks.

Parker: The quicker we can get
this done, the better.

Yeah, no, I know it's going to
be a challenge for you, parker,

But I know that
you can pull it off,

So I'm not really worried
about it at all.

I'm actually
looking forward to it.

-It'll be a good challenge.

Narrator: Almost a quarter
of the season already gone,

Parker opens up
his second front,

Doubling the size
of his operation

And splitting his crew in half.

There's a huge
amount of work to do.

I hope we can get it done.

Ken's wicked to have around.
I really like having ken around.

I have a huge amount
of respect for him.

Sometimes you just
can't beat experience.

I'll be 82
on September the 4th.

Most of the time,
I certainly don't feel that old.

We leased parker 2,000 acres

And by the drilling indicates

That there's gonna be
some pretty good ground here.

And with the price of gold,

I think he's gonna make
some serious money here.

Where we at, buddy?

Uh, cover's off.

Narrator: After a failed season
last year,

This is rick's last chance
to prove himself as a mine boss.

But five weeks late
because of lockdown,

He's only just secured
a new claim.

And his first 100-ounce
royalty payment

Is due to claim
owner troy taylor in 30 days.

First order of business here
is start getting stuff fired up.

Narrator:
Before he can get mining,

He has to move all of
his equipment to the new site.

Gentlemen.

-Look at that jalopy.

Narrator: And as of now,
he only has two team members.

-Where's ryan and z?

Oh, they're not coming

No go this year?

Well, z, I pretty much
expected that.

Yeah, family.

Just had a baby and the ryan,
kind of last minute.

It didn't work out
for him either.

Okay, well,
so we're doing this.

There's only three right now.

Well, we've got two
and a half people now.

[ both laugh ]

Narrator: The task ahead,

From his old camp
at upper duncan creek,

Rick must now move
his trailer shacks, generators,

Water pumps, excavators,

Loaders, and rock trucks

Along eight miles
of winding mountain dirt road

To his new ground
at lower duncan creek.

There's only one man
for the job,

Master truck driver,
nathan thornington.

-Nathan.
-Hey, man, how's it going?

-Good, how you been?
-Not too bad.

We're gonna move
the camp first.

Yeah.

I had 700 on this side.

We're get another excavator
on the other side

So we'll just drop them off.

Yeah, I can put them
anywhere down there.

You guys just drag them around.

It rained last night,

So these roads
are just super slick.

-The more weight the better.
-Good, good.

[ both laugh ]

All right,
good to see you again.

-You betcha.
-We'll start getting you loaded.

Narrator: The first trailer
is the bathroom shack,

A 60-foot long


Karla, you feeling strong?

-Always.
-Good.

Ready to grab that dunnage.

Hey, I want to stay close
to the trailer with the bucket,

But not hit it, so.

the first shack onto his truck

In just 15 minutes.

And that's why I pay them

Narrator: The truck carrying
rick ness's trailer

Is hanging off a mountain road,

Blocking the only route
to his new claim.

Nathan: So soon as I came around
it just slid.

We worried about
leaving the other side.

Well, yeah,
the whole thing flipping.

Oh, yeah. And the truck
and the trailer.

It had to rain last night.

Yeah, see as soon as it
got here, it just slid.

Every minute wasted here

Is a minute rick is not mining,

And the only machine
strong enough

To pull the truck out of danger
is rick's 70-ton excavator

Five miles away at camp.

Maximum speed?



He wants to walk it.

is that gonna take, rick?

It's gonna be hours
to get that 700 here.

I mean, it's got to come
this way anyways,

But I don't see us getting
anything done here without it.

Do you?

Might as well go get it.

...A week and a half, whatever.

It's gonna take a while.

This is the last thing
we need right now.

behind getting up here.

If troy wants his 100 ounces
in four weeks from now,

And the only way
we're gonna do that

Is we get mining right away.

So this is not helping.

Midnight in the yukon dusk...

It's either gonna lift this
thing out of there or it's not.

This is an ugly situation,

and the trailer will flip down

most vital part of my camp

Did it shift a lot
on the trailer?

Those might be the foremost
pathetic looking yet

Strongest trees
in the [bleep] universe.

All right, get her moving.

Narrator: Rick is one step
closer to redemption.

Rick: I can still maybe get
four hours of sleep tonight.

We are a day behind
in moving camp so.

A day behind's a day behind.

Narrator: Tony beets is back
at paradise hill

And on the back foot.

Without a water license on his
two dredges at the indian river,

He needs the hill to deliver
a 3,000-ounce gold target

And get his family business
back on track.

Tony's best land on the hill
is the 18-acre mega cut.

In a bid to mine it out
in just one season,

He's put his whole crew on it.

[ horn honks ]
-[ laughs ]

Kevin: Hey, tony, you copy?

Hey, tony, can I get you
at the sluice box, please?

Tony, can I get you
at the sluice box?

[ bleep ]

Everything up there
says it should spin,

The oscillator's
not [bleep] moving.

I went down there.

Spun the shaft underneath

And I could see that that part
is spinning, on the caul is

Spinning but the shaft
to the gearbox is not.

as you used to be.

There's the problem.

Narrator: Tony's oscillating
sluice box and shake

With the help of a weighted
spinning arm beneath the plant.

The motion separates
out the lighter dirt,

Allowing the heavier gold
to settle.

A cable has caught around
the spinning arm and jammed it,

But the motor above
has kept turning,

Grinding away at the key
and the key slot

That connects the arm
to the motor.

You got lead on you, cody?

Narrator: With the pandemic
disrupting supply lines,

There's no knowing how long
he'll be down.

To keep on track
for his 3,000-once goal,

Tony must take a gamble
on the other piece of ground

Ready to sluice.

You've been thinking about
this spot for 30 years.

Narrator: Last season,

Monica beets
opened up a cut on hunker creek.

Old time dredges produced
a $1 million a day here,

And she believed
they missed this spot...

Like what just happened?

after roadblock...

That they had a profound effect
on me personally

And gave me that purpose
in that drive

I mean, everybody I know
is struggling right now.

I'm not willing to take that
laying down.

the kind of person I am.

He was injured in the back
of a c-130 and had a head injury

His family is in mining.
So he has a ton of experience.

Right now,
it's a special time.

There's a whole lot of craziness
going on in the world.

And the price of gold
is skyrocketing.

So I'm optimistic.

Deep in the elkhorn mountains,

And then heading up there
to see how she fires up.

We're gonna move

try and move it over here

I've never operated
an excavator before,

But if I'm gonna run a mine,
I'm gonna have to learn.

There's a lot of bubble gum
and duct tape on these bad boys.

the trommel's coming on.

We've got water in the hopper
in the feeder.

All right, I'm gonna load
the first bucket.

Already within the first
five minutes.

Sluicing, finally!

We're finally putting through
some pay dirt.

Could see what this land
is actually made of.

Fred, we gotta stop.

plant is no simple job,

And all of fred's money
is sunk into leasing the claim.

But the late season start

Has turned parker's first cut

On the promised land
into a sea of mud.

Yeah, I mean,
when you're opening up

A cut like this late
in the season,

All the permafrost just melts
and the trucks drag it around

And it turns into this goop
that I'm sitting in right now.

Yeah, right now we're trying
to get rid of all this

Overburden, this cut here,
but it's a massive cut.

We're trucking stuff
up to the waste site.

We just got to get down
to pay here as soon as possible.

If we have any hope in hell
of making this two-week deadline

Park has put out for us.

Narrator: Instead of hiring
another foreman,

Parker has promoted
operator tyson lee

To run his biggest wash plant.

Parker: Right now
I'm letting tyson run sluicifer.

Mitch and brennan
are going to be pretty busy

And tyson's come a long way.

So I think it's a good chance
to see what he's got

And hopefully this doesn't bite
either of us in the a*s.

Tyson:
The heat's on my shoulders

To step up to the plate.

You know, parker's
only giving me two weeks

To get the pawn set up,

The roads built,
the wash plant pad set,

And he wants sluicifer
shaking away.

So there's -- that's not much
time to get all that done.

Narrator: Five years ago,

Tyson started
driving rock trucks for parker.

Tyson: Pretty green
at the mining aspect of things.

Narrator: And was nearly fired.

Two tires in 20 minutes.
Same guy.

Dude, I don't care
if he breaks shovels.

We got plenty. Go put him
on a shovel at the wash plant.

Yeah.

Great fun.
That's why I came up here.

Now parker is trusting him

With $600,000 sluicifer
and a brand-new cut.

When you're building
the wash plant pad

You want it to be as secure
as you can possibly get it.

If you're on already
mined ground

Or I'd be using tailings.

So I'm having to use
overburden.

So we're just trying to armor it
the best we can,

But we really don't have
much to work with.

Narrator:
Tailings are the waste rocks

That fall from the back
of a wash plant.

They make for a solid pan
to support the 45-ton plant.

But on this virgin ground,

Tyson must use softer,
overburdened mud.

If you're sitting it
on [bleep] material,

It's only gonna be
that much more sketchy.

but it's what we have.
