08x12 - Holiday with Terror

Post by bunniefuu »

The ocean's very, very deep, Jennie.

'That chain and anchor, just about weigh anything down.'

We said we wouldn't hurt her.

You said.

Look, it's crazy to let her run around

as though nothing's happened.

But as long as she doesn't know.

Alex, you gave me your word.

PX-4, do you see the subject near the drop site?

He's about ten feet from the package.

[intense music]

He has the package and is heading back, inspector.

All units stand by to move out as soon as he reaches his car.

Then how will anyone find me?

As soon as I get the money

I'll call your folks, tell them where you are.

- No, you won't. - Now, what do you mean by that?

You're gonna k*ll me.

I know it.

You're-you're afraid that if I'm found

I'll tell the police who you are.

- Isn't that the truth? - Yeah.

That's the truth.

[instrumental music]

[doorbell rings]

I've got it.

- Hi, Diane. - Hi.

Come on in.

Well. Something out of "House Fantastic."

Oh, my mother redecorates with the satins.

[male #1] 'Lisa, I'm ready.'

Uh, I thought your folks weren't gonna be home tonight.

Oh, they'll be leaving soon.

My father's plane came in late.

Oh.

Did Alex drive you over?

Yeah, he's outside.

Oh, why didn't you ask him in?

Oh, he's in one of his sirocco moods tonight.

You know, like the desert wind, restless and moody.

- I think he wants to be alone. - Karen, who's at the door?

Oh, mother, this is Diane Farmer.

Remember, I told you about her?

It's nice to meet you, Diane.

You have a beautiful home, Mrs. Collins.

Thank you.

Where do you live, Diane?

Uh, over on Mariposa.

We just moved in a couple of months ago.

Okay, I'm ready, let's go.

Vern, I want you to meet Karen's friend, Diane.

Hello, Diane, nice to meet you.

Well, what have you two got planned for this evening?

I thought you were in a hurry to leave.

And so I am, at $500 a plate

I wanna be there from soup to nuts.

Come on.

- Marrakesh. - What?

We're flying to Marrakesh.

On a magic carpet.

Oh, be sure and drop us a line, will ya?

[chuckles]

[instrumental music]

Well, what say we go into Phoenix and see a movie?

Well, we've seen everything, haven't we?

Uh, this Diane, doesn't she seem

a little old to be Karen's friend?

Oh, I suppose she does a little

but then Karen's so shy, maybe she'll be good for her.

I guess you're right.

[music continues]

[engine revving]

[music continues]

What are we gonna do tonight? I have to tell Alex.

Whatever you want.

[doorbell rings]

That's probably him.

- Hi. - Hi.

What's going on in here, a powwow?

Do you guys need a ride somewhere or what?

We haven't decided what we're gonna do yet.

Well, you better make up your mind

'cause I'm gettin' ready to head out.

- Oh, where to? - Costa Del Ray.

California?

Well, it's not the end of the world, sunshine.

It's six or seven hours and then salt air and blue Pacific.

Oh. It sounds fantastic.

Well, you're both more than welcome to come if you want to.

Oh, sure, just pick up and leave.

Why not?

Well, I wish I could.

Look, I've got access to a big house, right on the beach

complete with surf boards and a sail boat.

- What about my parents? - Leave 'em a note.

You're not a little girl anymore.

What do you think, Diane?

It sounds wild. I'm game if you are.

Yeah. Well, I'll drop you a card, huh?

Uh, wait.

It'll take me a few minutes to pack.

Great!

- I'll help. - Come on.

[dramatic music]

Did you lose something?

Hm, my keys.

I think I left 'em in the house.

- I'll run in. - No, that's okay.

I think I know where they are.

[music continues]

[music continues]

You find them?

[engine starting]

[intense music]

[Marvin Miller] Shortly after day-break on July 17th

Mr. and Mrs. Vern Collins of Phoenix, Arizona

received a special delivery letter

warning that $200,000 dollars ransom would be required

for the safe return of their daughter Karen.

The family immediately contacted the FBI.

And Inspector Lewis Erskine assumed on the scene

supervision of the case.

According to the pulse mark, they've driven west.

You better get this to the bureau right away.

Mrs. Collins, do you have any idea

what Karen's plans were last night?

I'm afraid not, inspector.

We got home very late, and we saw that Karen was gone.

We tried to phone Diane.

She said she lived on Mariposa street

but we couldn't find any listing for her.

We were hoping she was spending the night there.

Who else knew you were going out last night?

Oh, we had no reason to keep it a secret.

The truth is, we have a pretty active social life.

- We go out quite a bit. - And Karen stays here alone?

Only on Thursdays. We have a live-in housekeeper.

Mrs. Kraft. Thursday is her day off.

Maybe the kidnapper knew that too.

How long has she been with you?

Oh. Almost a year and a half. She should be here soon.

Excuse me.

There's no one named Farmer living on Mariposa Street.

And there's no listing for a Diane Farmer

any place in the city.

Mrs. Collins..

How long has Karen known this Diane Farmer?

Only about a week or two.

They met at one of those rock concerts in the park.

You see, inspector, my daughter is very shy

when it comes to making friends.

'And that's why I was so happy when I thought'

'she found someone a little bit special to her.'

I see.

Inspector, are you thinking that perhaps this Diane

had something to do with my daughter's kidnapping?

It's a possibility.

[instrumental music]

[engine revving]

Well, this is it. End of the road.

- Hey, it's great! - What'd I tell ya?

[music continues]

Oh, I wish we were here alone.

Oh, we could be.

What do you mean?

The ocean's very, very deep, Jennie.

'That chain and anchor, just about weigh anything down.'

We said we wouldn't hurt her.

You said.

Look, it's crazy to let her run around

as though nothing's happened.

But as long as she doesn't know.

- What if she finds out? - She won't.

She won't, if you're nice to her.

At least until this whole thing is over with and

and we're a long ways from here.

'Just the two of us.'

Alex, you gave me your word!

Alright.

You keep an eye on her, I'm gonna call Frank.

[instrumental music]

Hey!

You girls share the upstairs bedroom.

[music continues]

Penny for your thoughts.

I was just thinking how good things happen

when you don't even expect them.

Yeah.

Life's just full of good surprises.

[intense music]

[telephone ringing]

- Yeah. - 'We're here.'

Well, good for you, old buddy.

How does it feel to have all that ocean and sunshine

while I sit here sweatin' out the pay-off?

Hey, man, what's with you?

We're the ones who snatched the girl.

All you have to do is pick up the bread.

[sighs]

I get buggy in these two by four motel rooms.

I keep thinking that I'm back in stir.

Okay..

I figure they got the letter by now.

What about the papers?

Nothin'.

- Nothin' on TV or radio either. - Good.

Then you go ahead and make both calls, the way we planned it.

'Yeah, alright.'

And don't try to call me back here.

I'll be in touch with you.

[intense music]

It's a very good liking, isn't it, dear?

Yes, it is very good.

The coffee's ready, Mrs. Collins.

'Should I serve it now?'

Oh, please, Mrs. Kraft, thank you.

Thank you, John.

[clanks]

Sorry.

That's alright, no harm done.

Oh, thank you.

Poor thing. She's as upset as we are.

How do you like yours, inspector?

Uh, none for me, excuse me.

[dramatic music]

[water running]

Mrs. Kraft?

Oh, inspector.

I must really apologize again for my, uh, clumsiness.

I'm very upset about Karen.

Was it this picture that upset you?

The picture? Of course not.

Perhaps the girl looks like someone you know.

No, I've never seen her before.

'Does the name Diane Farmer mean anything to you?'

No.

You never heard Karen mention her friend's name?

Well, she may have mentioned it

but, uh, I don't remember it.

Do you have any children, Mrs. Kraft?

No, sir.

Thank you.

[music continues]

Diane...what's he really like?

- Alex? - Mm-mm.

I don't really know him too much better than you do.

But I-I thought that you--

That we went together, no?

I only met Alex a month ago.

He's neat. He's really nice.

'But I don't know, I, I guess I just like him'

'more as a friend than a boyfriend.'

Feel better?

Mm-hmm.

[chuckles]

Hey!

Woo!

I thought you wanted to learn how to surf.

I told her to put her bathing suit on.

Well, I was afraid I might look foolish.

That I might even drown.

I wouldn't let either one of those things happen to you.

Promise.

Okay, it won't take more than a minute to change.

Go!

We are gonna be so rich, baby. Rich.

You act like it's something new for you.

Yeah, well, it is.

This tiny bit will be my money, not my old man's.

[giggles] Oh-oh, my poor little rich boy.

And my old man never gave me anything

without charging me double.

Treated me like I was some kind of property

or something that he owned.

Okay, I was only teasing.

When we get that money..

...we're heading straight for Europe.

I'm gonna knock on my old man's Swiss chalet.

Oh, Alex, do we have to?

Oh, yeah, yeah, we have to.

I gotta show him I didn't need him then, I don't need him now.

Alright, you show him.

First we'll do some shopping, huh?

Yeah, yes!

When you meet my old man, I want you to look like a princess.

Hmm, Alex..

It's ridiculous, isn't it?

I mean, who ever heard of a princess

serving time for robbery?

Yeah, I told you not to mention anything.

It's in the past.

It's over, alright?

- Okay. - Okay.

Okay.

From now on, all we have to worry about is..

The phone!

She might try to use the phone!

[intense music]

Alex!

Alex!

[Alex] Karen!

What's taking so long?

This phone, it doesn't work.

[chuckles] Well, it's probably been turned off.

I told you this place hasn't been used in a long time.

[door opening]

What's happening?

I was just telling Karen about the phone.

I wanted to call home. Tell my folks I'm alright.

Hey, listen. I have to go in to the village later.

Why don't I stop by the telephone company

have them turn it on?

Okay.

Now, you didn't come all the way to California

just to call your folks, did you?

No.

Alright, let's go.

Can't surf too well, can ya?

[dramatic music]

Lewis, we've blown up the snapshot the kidnappers sent.

The upholstery pattern was distinctive enough

to warrant a manufacturer's check.

And it was all set?

Oh, yes.

That pattern was used exclusively

on 1972 LTD Broms.

'And the color of the car'

'judging from the door frame, was brown.'

Oh, hold on a minute, Art.

The mug-shot of the girl, Lou.

And, uh, some comparison photos.

Okay, fine.

Would you look at these, please?

Tom just got in from the airport with the mug-shot you sent.

It's Mrs. Kraft's daughter alright.

The latents on the photograph

matched your identification record

under the name of Jennie Lee Nelson.

'True name, Jennie Lee Kraft.'

Alright, Arthur, I'll get back to you.

Tom would you ask Mrs. Kraft to come in please.

That's her alright, inspector.

[Mrs. Collins] 'That's the girl who called herself Diane Farmer.'

Excuse me, you're Mrs. Kraft?

Would you join us in the living room, please?

Of course, Mr. Colby.

What is it? Is it Karen?

Ms. Kraft, do you mind looking at these?

Yes, it's..

It's Jennie.

My daughter.

Your daughter?

Mrs. Kraft?

That's the girl we think--

We didn't know you had a daughter.

Where has she been living?

Oh, uh..

In, in the apartment with me for..

...about two months.

Uh, I lost track of her when she went to prison.

And suddenly she called me.

Didn't you see her yesterday?

No.

And all of her clothes are gone.

Do you have any idea where she might be now?

No.

[sobbing] Oh, please forgive me.

If Jennie had anything to do with this terrible thing

please forgive me.

[sobbing]

[telephone ringing]

- Hello? - 'Mrs. Collins?'

- Yes? - You got the letter?

About your daughter?

Yes, is she alright?

She'll stay alright

just as long as you don't put the law on me

when I go to pick up that money.

'And you better remember that, lady.'

My husband's trying to raise it now.

You'll be hearing from me again.

[sighs]

Is the voice familiar?

No.

Then we'll know more when he calls back.

Uh, Mrs. Kraft.

Uh, does your daughter have any friends here?

Friends?

Oh, there's, uh..

There's one young man.

I haven't met him.

Don't even know his name.

Does he have a car?

She uses mine sometimes.

Oh..

You know, the young man..

...he might work in a car wash.

He gave Jennie some free coupons.

'I think I still got it in the glove compartment.'

I'd like to see them.

Oh, yes, of course.

[instrumental music]

[car honking]

[car door closes]

We are in business.

I talked to Frank. He put the first call through.

Collins is out trying to raise the money now.

[waves gushing]

Hey! What's with you?

I bring home good news, and, uh..

What's the matter?

Karen and I had a long talk after you left.

Yeah, about what?

She's in love with you.

[chuckles] Hey, for a minute I thought it was serious.

It is!

Not as serious as $200,000.

I just feel a little sorry for her, that's all.

I guess, I guess we share something in common.

That's sweet. Where is she, inside?

She's on the beach.

I told you to keep an eye on her.

Karen!

Karen!

This isn't a picnic we're on, you know?

I won't let her out of my sight again, I promise.

It might be too late, already.

She wouldn't be running back if she suspected anything.

Would she?

Would she?

[sighs] I thought I'd take a little walk.

What were you talking about with the fisherman?

Fish, he was telling me about

all the big ones that got away.

Why?

Oh, Alex is just being big-brotherly again.

But it's not too smart talking to the characters

on the beach, really.

I'll keep that in mind.

Come on, the barbecue's ready.

Hey, Karen!

You wanna go out for sail?

Right now?

Why not?

Winds getting a little strong.

We might not be able to go later on.

Sure, I came to see the beach.

Okay!

Hey, you two!

If you wanted a cook, why didn't you hire one?

You know, Diane's right.

It's not fair for her to do all the work.

[instrumental music]

Van Heusen.

That was his name, inspector. Alexander Van Heusen.

Didn't show up Monday, so I got someone else.

Remember what kind of car he was driving?

Cars are my bread and butter.

It was a brown LTD.

Broms, 72.

'You can keep that application form.'

- 'I won't be needing it.' - Thank you.

That address, it's a motel.

A real flea bag of a joint, if you know what I mean.

Did Van Heusen live there alone?

'Him and another guy split the tab.'

'At least that's what he told me.'

I knew that Van Heusen didn't belong

in a job like this.

Big ideas.

You know, like that car.

Did you ever see this roommate of his?

I don't believe so.

What about a girlfriend?

[chuckles] Her, I remember.

I'm telling you, she had to have the cleanest car in this town

the way he kept lettin' her go through here.

That's the girl.

Well, you've been very helpful, thank you.

Anytime, inspector.

We'll run Van Heusen through the NCIC.

And the motel?

Well, if his roommate is still involved

then he may be there.

[instrumental music]

Inspector?

Subject has just placed a suitcase

into the trunk of his car

and is entering the motel office.

Maintain surveillance.

Lou, Mr. Ward's on the line.

Thank you.

Yes, Arthur.

Lewis, we have a very good possible ident for you

on Van Heusen's roommate.

He matches the description

and his name is Frank Hayes Comingore.

'His identification record shows three arrests.'

'Two convictions.'

'One for as*ault with intent to k*ll.'

Arthur, I think I'd like to go through with the drop.

Alright, Lewis, good luck.

[dramatic music]

[telephone ringing]

- Yes? - Have you got the money?

I've got it.

Okay, now, you've got ten minutes to make the drop.

- But-- - 'Ten minutes.'

Now, here's where you're going.

[intense music]

[music continues]

[car door closes]

[music continues]

PX-4.

Do you see the subject at the drop site?

[music continues]

PX-2, subject's at the foot of the incline.

[music continues]

He's about ten feet from the package.

He has the package and he's heading back, inspector.

[music continues]

We see him now.

[music continues]

This is PX-4, we've spotted him.

All units stand by to move out as soon as he reaches his car.

[music continues]

Hey, you!

What're you doin' here?

Hey, Lou, you've gotta take a look.

[music continues]

Stand by.

Alright, hold it right there now.

[g*nsh*t]

All units move in to the top of the dam.

Subject has just shot a security guard.

[engine revving]

[music continues]

[tires screeching]

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

Jennie, Frank didn't show at the airport last night.

Well, did you call him back in Phoenix?

No answer. Something's gone wrong.

I just.. Well, just wait, uh..

Look, maybe he decided

it was safer to drive here instead

and he had no way of reaching us.

Yeah.

Yeah, hey, maybe you're right.

But then he should be here in a couple of hours.

Yeah.

- Where's Karen? - Upstairs sleeping.

Like a lamb, I just checked.

[chuckles] Sleeping?

[chuckles]

Lewis..

Alex Van Heusen's parents have homes in Miami and Switzerland

and a beach house in Costa Del Ray

just south of Los Angeles.

And Comingore had a plane ticket for Los Angeles

when we arrested him.

How soon can you get out there?

Oh, we're near the airport, I'd say a couple of hours.

Good, I'll tell Bryan the Randts are on the way

and have them put the beach house

under surveillance.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

This phone's been pulled out.

Probably by accident.

Was it by accident you lied to me?

- What do you mean? - About you and Alex.

You said you never went together.

We didn't.

Then what about the picture inside this watch

and the inscription?

I can explain that.

Forget it.

[intense music]

Tell her the truth, Jennie.

Jennie?

You told me your name was Diane.

[music continues]

What's going on here?

What do you want from me?

From you?

Nothing.

'But from your father'

two hundred thousand dollars.

That is if he ever wants to see you again...alive.

No.

No.

[dramatic music]

Holidaying's over, Karen.

All over.

[instrumental music]

Thank you.

- Inspector, Tom. - Bryan, are they here?

Jennie Nelson's inside the cottage.

What about Van Heusen and the Collins girl?

Well, I just talked to that fisherman over there.

Uh, he identified a photograph of Karen Collins

as the girl he spoke to yesterday afternoon

on the beach.

- Has he seen her since? - Just briefly.

He was crossing the road about an hour ago

and she drove by.

'They were heading north, up the coast.'

Now, he didn't get a good look at the driver

but he did describe Van Heusen's car.

Let's go.

[engine revving]

I'm ready.

Jennie Kraft, FBI.

- Can we come in? - What do you want?

First, Ms. Kraft, I wanna advice you of your rights.

You have the right to remain silent.

Anything you say can be used against you.

'You have the right to an attorney, if you wish.'

I don't know what this is all about.

- Where's Karen Collins? - How am I supposed to know?

You were with her before she was kidnapped.

She left this house an hour ago with Alex Van Heusen.

That's a lie. She hasn't been here.

Jennie..

Frank Comingore is in custody.

All that matters now is Karen's safety.

'You do care about that, don't you?'

Alex won't hurt her.

He promised.

And how much faith do you put in his promises?

'Where is he?'

[intense music]

[sighs]

[music continues]

- Let's go. - Where are we?

Just a place I use to explore when I was a kid.

Hey, now, don't be afraid, I said

I wasn't gonna hurt you, right?

Come on.

[music continues]

[music continues]

Not too many people know about this place.

The man who owns it thinks that, uh..

these cars will be worth a lot of money someday.

[chuckles]

I bet he doesn't even come down here to look at 'em.

And how will anyone find me?

As soon as I get the money

I'll call your folks, and tell 'em where you are.

Okay?

- No, you won't. - Now, what do you mean by that?

You're gonna k*ll me.

I know it.

Y-you're afraid that if I'm found

I'll tell the police

who you are, isn't that the truth?

Yeah.

That's the truth.

[gasps]

'Hey!'

Karen!

[intense music]

There's no other way out of here, Karen.

[music continues]

[clanks]

[music continues]

[gasps]

[dramatic music]

Please.

Alright, come on.

Move!

[music continues]

[music continues]

It's all over, sunshine.

Just stay here.

[music continues]

FBI, Van Heusen!

[g*nshots]

Halt!

[music continues]

[g*nshots]

Karen.

[instrumental music]

Karen?

It's alright, it's alright.

Everything's alright.

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

You know, Lisa, I've been thinking.

The three of us should go away somewhere

where we can really spend some time together.

I've got a better idea.

Why don't we spend some time together here

in our own home?

She's here.

[music continues]

- Oh, daddy. - Oh, she's alright.

- Isn't she, inspector? - She's just fine, Mrs. Collins.

- So good to have you home. - Mom.

Darling, we missed you so.

Inspector, I don't know how we can ever thank you.

Glad to be of help.

[Marvin Miller] Alexander Van Heusen, Jennie Lee Nelson

and Frank Comingore were tried in Federal Court

and found guilty of kidnapping.

Comingore and Van Heusen

were also convicted of assaulting federal officers.
