[instrumental music]

Mr. Morgan, you better listen to me.

''Cause I got me an idea about something'

that could just get you into a whole lot of trouble.

What idea is that, Jack?

About..

...how you come by all that money

you kept sending your sister.

Ow! Ow!

Well, that idea gets you buried, Jack.

[indistinct chattering on radio]

The Forrest brothers. Darrin is unconscious.

It scared these people pretty bad, inspector.

But all they did see was a car driving out.

Now, we found traces of blood leading to the spot it was in.

Alright, where is he, Laura Ann?

Well, there's 50,000 up for grabs.

So you wait for Morgan.

I'm gonna take Laura Ann back to Macon.

Do you got a wife?

And kids?

You keep that in mind.

Stand right here.

- What are you doing? - Shut up.

Okay, fill it up.

[intense music]

[music continues]

[groans]

[tires screeching]

Within hours of the daring daylight robbery

of a Kansas City Kansas Discount Center

by a lone g*nman

the stolen automobile used in the robbery

was found in the parking lot

of the Kansas City, Missouri Municipal Airport.

A report of the robbery was immediately forwarded

to FBI headquarters.

Because descriptions and composite drawings of the loner

matched those of the holdup man

in three large unsolved bank robberies

in Kansas and Missouri

Inspector Erskine arrived from Washington

to spearhead the investigation.

- Inspector. - Noel.

Good to see you again.

Here's what we've got so far.

- Hi, Tom. - Noel.

We interviewed ticket agents on all the airlines

after the robbery, but no one could remember anyone

of the loner's description taking an outbound flight.

So we took it a step further.

We had the flight crews interviewed by agents

at their destinations.

- And you come up with anything? - Yes.

A stewardess on a flight to Miami

remembered a passenger who resembled the subject.

Good. Where is she now?

The crew had a layover in Miami

but they are already on their way back.

Now, this is the car.

[clears throat]

It was stolen two days ago in Wichita.

He put a set of stolen plates on it.

Yeah, that's the same routine he used

in the Missouri bank jobs.

- Mm-hmm. - Any evidence in it?

Yes. Over here, inspector.

'Now, that's a piece of a photograph'

we found wedged behind the seat.

'We checked it out with the owner of the car.'

He said it wasn't his.

It looks underexposed.

He probably just kept the ones that turned out better.

Or destroyed them.

Alright, Noel, you better get these off right away.

Right.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

"I am the resurrection and the life, sayeth the Lord.

'"He that believeth in me'

'"though he die, yet shall he live.'

'"And whosoever liveth and believeth in Me'

'"shall never die.'

'Believest thou this?"'

'Emily Morgan did.'

As much as anyone I ever knew.

And if every friend who ever loved her

was as a flower

she would sleep tonight

under a forest of roses.

May thy sleep be sweet, Emily.

Amen.

I'm sorry, Mr. Morgan.

I, I didn't know where to reach you.

I'd have sent a telegram

only, only, your sister wouldn't let me.

It's alright, reverend.

Thank you.

'I'm sorry I took so long getting back, Emily.'

Forgive me.

You remember me, Mr. Morgan? Jack Wiley?

- I worked for your sister. - Yeah, I remember you.

Was she sick very long?

No more than a week.

But she wouldn't let me go for a doctor

until it was too late.

Never was her way to complain.

Now I worked for her close to two years.

She told me all about you.

Talked about you coming home.

Something I never did understand, though.

All of 'em checks and them money orders

you used to send her from different places

she'd have me taken 'em right back to post office

send them off general delivery wherever you were last.

So you wouldn't be out any money on her account.

You're getting into something

that ain't none of your business, Jack.

Well, I didn't mean to do that.

I mean, money is money.

Don't matter to me how you come by.

[chuckles]

All I was thinking was

well, you must be doing real good out on the road

Mr. Morgan.

You're not looking for a partner, are you?

No.

Thanks for what you did.

Oh, Mr. Morgan, I can keep my mouth shut

if that's what you're worried about.

Goodbye, Jack.

[instrumental music]

[engine cranks]

[engine revving]

[music continues]

[engine revving]

[female #1] I wouldn't say this flatters him.'

But it sure looks like the same man.

- Did you speak to him at all? - Let's see.

'I asked him if he wanted a drink. He said no.'

I served him his lunch

but he didn't even bother to eat it.

Do you recall anyone sitting next to him?

No.

What is it?

Of course, I remember. I lent him a pencil.

What for?

Well, he wanted to order something

from the airline gift catalog.

the ones you find in the back of the seats.

Do you remember what it was or where he wanted it sent?

No, but I know he filled out the blank.

I showed him how to fold it to make an envelope

and he put a 20 inside.

Tom, ask the airline's home office

where gift orders are processed.

We want to forward all those mailed

on or after the day of the robbery

for handwriting examination.

- If he mailed it. - I mailed it for him.

'Right before he left the plane in Atlanta'

he asked if I had a stamp.

I told him I didn't, but that I'd see that it got mailed

as soon as I reached Miami.

[chuckles] Funny.

He didn't have any change for the stamp.

I told him it was only 8 cents, to forget it

but he put a dollar bill in my hand and just kept going.

It was as if he wouldn't

or couldn't take a favor from anybody.

[engine revving]

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chattering]

[register clattering]

[indistinct chattering]

Mr. Morgan.

What I started to say before..

Now, if you're worried I don't know how to keep my mouth shut..

[indistinct chattering]

Mr. Morgan, you better listen to me

''cause I got me an idea about something'

that could just get you into a whole lot of trouble.

What idea is that, Jack?

About..

...how you come by all that money

you kept sending your sister.

Ow! Ow!

Well, that idea gets you buried, Jack.

[groans]

Now, you beat it, boy.

[indistinct chattering]

'Evening, Tony.'

I'll be in the back.

Aren't you from up around Townsville?

Do I know you?

Yeah. About two or three years back..

'You're Johnny Morgan.'

I used to go with a friend of yours, Cody Evans.

And you got a sister, don't you?

Lily, is it?

- Emily. - Oh, yeah, that's it.

Well, she still live up around there?

We buried her today.

Tsk. Oh, my. I'm sorry.

'He's got a roll of 20s and 50s. A real wad.'

Then, a little while ago this kid comes up.

He tells him he knew where he got all that money

he was sending to his sister.

'I thought there was gonna be trouble.'

He's, uh, got a g*n, Mr. Bollin.

Here's your change.

Evening.

Bill Bollin. I own the place, see?

Everything alright?

I thought you'd like to know

we also serve a thick sirloin steak

with all the trimmings, for $4.95.

Might take some of the curse off tomorrow morning.

This be on the house.

Laura Ann, uh, fix our friend up with a nice meal.

That table over there be alright?

Uh, don't forget your coat.

I-I know, I'll put it right over here for you.

Enjoy your meal.

Good chance these belong to a rental car in the parking lot.

License plate's on the tag there. Check it out.

[tapping fingers]

Excuse me.

Do you wanna see a menu?

It doesn't really matter much.

Why don't you just surprise me?

Well, 'cause I'm not much on surprises.

What if I just bring you your steak?

[instrumental music]

Hey, there must be a couple of thousand bucks in there.

You can really spot 'em, Mr. Bollin.

That's right, Lloyd.

It's like it was a neon sign.

[instrumental music]

[door shuts]

Hey.

Hey!

You didn't seem to know where you live

so I got you a room here.

Motel clerk said you could pay in the morning.

Where's my car?

It's still in the parking lot

behind the Emerald Isle.

But it's alright. I locked up everything.

Oh, yeah.

How much I owe you for going through all this trouble?

Try thanks.

Here's your keys.

Forget it. I don't want it.

Here's the key to your room.

Think you'll make it alright?

Hey!

You forgot your present.

You keep it.

Look, I told you. You don't owe me anything.

I don't have any use for it now.

Well, you might feel different in the morning.

You can pick it up at the bar.

You didn't even tell me your name.

Laura. Laura Ann Millpark.

[engine cranks]

[instrumental music]

[intercom buzzes]

Lewis, the lab has processed the photograph

found in the stolen car

'the loner abandoned at the airport.'

They make anything out of it?

I think it's a grandstand of some sort.

'There's an image of what appears to be a vendor'

'in a striped uniform.'

Sounds like a ballpark.

Or a racetrack.

That's very possible.

And there are also some palm trees in the background.

It could have something to do with a job he's planning.

Have you found out yet about the airline gift orders?

Agents are processing them now.

I'll let you know as soon as they come up with anything.

I still stay we should have kept the money.

Ah, you boys still think nickel and dime.

That diagram in that suitcase means something.

Either a big job he's planning or one he's already pulled off

and got the money stashed somewhere.

There's a lot more at stake then a couple of thousand bucks.

He's gonna lead us to it.

- Morning, Laura Ann. - Good morning.

- Going shopping? - Yup.

Just waiting for the stores to open.

Laura Ann, that fella you gave lift to last night

I bet he was plenty thankful.

No, he is not the thankful type.

Um..

If he comes back in here, uh..

...I would like it if you'd... keep being nice to him.

How come?

Well, something tells me he's an important man.

I might be able to do a little business with him.

Oh, I don't know.

Laura, have I ever encouraged you

to go out with any of the men who come in here?

No.

That's because I never thought they were good enough for you.

Now, believe me, you could do a whole lot worse than this one.

'And, uh, you'd be doing me a favor.'

Okay.

[instrumental music]

[Morgan] 'Laura!'

I wanted to thank you for last night.

Well, you can say thank you.

- Where are you going? - Shopping.

It's a nice day. I thought we could go for a drive.

Okay.

[engine revving]

[intercom buzzes]

- Erskine. - Lewis, we got a break.

We've located the loner's hand-printed gift order.

'And the document section has matched it'

'to the hand-printing in his bank-robbery demand note.'

What was the address?

He ordered a China tea set

'delivered to an Emily Morgan'

'care of Postmaster, Rural Route 5'

Townsville, Georgia.

I'll alert the resident agent covering the area

and have the US attorney in Kansas City contacted

about a warrant.

We should get there some time this evening.

Why do you stay here?

Well, it beats sitting around bus stations waiting on a bus

that never really goes anywhere.

And no boyfriends?

Sure, the cream of the crop.

And they all turned solid.

[exhales sharply] Bet you have girlfriends all over the place, huh?

No.

Yeah. Well, I heard that before.

First girl that I ever went out with

she told me I had a face that looked like

the business end of an old shovel.

The second girl, she agreed with her.

So I never did date much after that.

Well, what did they know?

I like your looks. They're strong.

Besides, it's, it's what's on the inside

of the man that counts.

[sighs] Yeah, maybe what's on the inside of me

is even uglier than what's on the outside.

Well, I don't believe that.

Well, it makes me stand tall when you say it

but that's because you don't really know me.

Well, I know you're a gentleman and you can be kind.

I also know that..

...I'm gonna miss you when you go.

And I have a feeling like that's gonna be real soon.

I'm moving on tomorrow.

You ever gonna come back this way?

If I have reason.

Yeah, look me up at the Emerald Isle sometime.

'Laura.'

Come with me.

Why?

'Cause I've been alone most of my life

except for Emily.

'Men need somebody.'

I thought you were the kind that never really needed anybody.

Well, I didn't think I was, either.

'But since I've met you'

I realize how all alone I really am.

'I need you, Laura.'

I'll be good to you.

Alright.

'Cause I've a feeling like

you won't be coming back this way again.

[dramatic music]

[engine revving]

[g*nshots]

[glass shattering]

[music continues]

FBI.

[g*nsh*t]

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[Jack] Look, I had a right to be in that house.

Ms. Emily always had me look after things for her.

Well, I wasn't about to stop just 'cause she died.

You also knew her brother had come back.

Well, y-yeah.

But that money you found on me, that..

It wasn't his really.

It was still wrapped up in bands.

I-it, it was stolen money.

I was only takin' what was due me

for, for lookin' after Ms. Emily

all that time while he was gone.

And where's Morgan now?

[chuckles]

Beats me.

You know, you took quite a chance breaking into that house.

'Suppose he'd shown up while you were going through his things?'

[chuckles] No, he couldn't have done that.

He, he was down at Macon.

- How did you know that? - Well, I followed him.

He was down in the Emerald Isle, just drinkin' whisky

like there was no tomorrow.

Alright, Wiley.

[instrumental music]

What's, uh, what's this money for, Laura?

Well, you hadn't held out on my paycheck in a long time

and I just want to pay you what I owed ya.

[chuckles]

Let's just call it a wedding present.

Or am I jumping the g*n a little bit?

Well, you never can tell.

Hey, Bill, you've really been nice about everything.

No.

Just like to see you finally smile once in a while.

You've had your share of rough breaks.

I'm happy to see it finally coming your way.

Thank you.

Darrin.

Bird-dog them.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

You haven't said a word since we left town, Laura.

Don't you even wanna know where we're going?

No. I don't care as long as I'm with you.

You believe that, don't you?

Is there any reason I shouldn't?

Well, there's things about me that--

There's things about everyone

that are just best left hidden.

Johnny..

...I borrowed this from you to pay back Bollin.

[chuckles]

It's alright.

See, he got me out of a scrape with the law.

Bad checks.

''Cause I ran up a whole string of them'

and I would have gone to prison

and, and he paid 'em all off for me.

- Is that all? - Yeah.

Well, if that's all, I think we can stop bothering the past.

It's all over.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

We're with the FBI. I'm Special Agent Colby.

This is Inspector Erskine.

Now, where can we find the owner?

Well, that'd be Mr. Bollin.

Uh, he stepped out about an hour ago.

Could-could I help you with something?

Have you ever seen that man?

Well, uh, I'm not sure.

Listen, maybe you better wait till Mr. Bollin comes back.

We'd like to hear what you have to say first.

[sighs] Well..

I don't know, I mean, he-he's kind of looks like

that guy that drove off with Laura Ann this morning.

'She was a waitress here.'

- Where were they going? - I don't know.

I mean, that's honest. I don't know.

Well, what's the girl's full name?

It's, um, Mill, uh, Millpark.

Laura Ann Millpark. They drove off in a grey car.

I don't know anything.

You know, I've only been working here a couple of days.

Uh, Mr. Bollin, he sort of has a reputation

for bein' kinda tough and, uh..

Well, I don't think he'd like

someone talking about what goes on here.

You-you know?

Well, there's no need to tell him we were here.

I'd like you to call us if you find out where they were going.

Right.

[instrumental music]

It'll be just like I told you.

So welcome to Florida's finest, Ms. Millpark.

Down at the locksmiths', they're preparing you

a key to this city at this very minute.

Well, I should certainly hope so.

I mean, it's not every day you get to come here.

I've got to go out for several hours.

But I'll be down the way later at number seven.

Will you be alright till I get back?

Yeah, I'll be fine.

You know, it may not be too long in the future

before you and I might need only one set of keys.

Lots of wedding chapels all over Florida.

Don't plan too far in advance, Johnny.

I never have.

Feel like it this time.

We'll talk when I get back.

[music continues]

That's right. Jacksonville.

The Tropic Palms Motel.

Jacksonville?

That isn't too far away.

Just a minute.

Morgan's comin' out now. He's alone.

[engine cranks]

[engine revving]

He's takin' off in Laura's car.

Well, stay with him. We'll be comin' down.

Right!

[dramatic music]

[engine cranks]

[tires screeching]

[tires screeching]

[indistinct chattering]

[man on PA] 'Rounding the first turn, Lightning Rod and Runaway.'

'All lead by Speedy Messenger.'

'Taking the lead now is Boll Weevil'

'with Lightning Rod and Runaway.'

'Speedy Messenger and Moving Light.'

'On the far turn'

'Boll Weevil, Runaway and Lightning Rod.'

'And here comes Moving Light.'

'Heading for home'

'Boll Weevil, Runaway and Moving Light.'

'Boll Weevil, Runaway and Lightning Rod.'

'Runaway and Boll Weevil.'

'And at the finish line, Boll Weevil, by a neck'

'Runaway and Lightning Rod.'

[audience cheering]

'Just a reminder that in the eighth race'

'the opening sweepstakes first is $8000.'

According to the bartender, he left Macon early this morning

with a waitress from the Emerald Isle.

Any indication where they were going?

No.

The owner might know something

but we haven't been able to see him.

- What do you know about him? - Not much.

His name is William Bollin.

The police say he has a number of hoodlum contacts.

He's never been convicted, but two of his men

the Forrest brothers, have served time for armed robbery.

Arthur, here's Tom.

The bartender called.

Mr. Ward, we just received word

that the owner of the Emerald Isle

and one of his men left early this afternoon

for Jacksonville, Florida.

Well, that ties in with the partial photograph

we found in the stolen car in Kansas City.

It resembles a dog track just outside of Jacksonville.

Lewis, I'll have the Jacksonville office

'alert the police about what we have now.'

We'll leave right away.

[instrumental music]

[bell ringing]

[man on PA] 'And they're off.'

[crowd cheering]

'And at the first turn, is Golden Pride.'

'Power Drive is second.'

[crowd cheering]

'Golden Pride is holding his lead.'

'But Power Drive is almost nose to nose.'

'At the far turn, it's still Golden Pride.'

'Power Drive closing the gap.'

'Power Drive has now taken the lead.'

Get on back in there.

Put your hands behind you head.

You two, get in here.

And you fill this up or I'll k*ll all of ya.

Move it!

Hurry there.

You got a wife?

- Yes, sir. - Kids?

- I sure do. - Well, you keep that in mind.

- Yes, sir. - Fine.

- Is that all of it? - Yes, sir.

Put it right here.

Now you get in there.

- Move it! - Yes, sir.

[man on PA] '...followed by Golden Pride'

'and running them out of the field.'

[instrumental music]

[crowd cheering]

[indistinct chattering]

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

[knocking on door]

Bill, what are you doin' here?

- Nothing. - Alright.

Where is he, Laura Ann?

He went out a couple of hours ago. I don't know where.

- Wh-what's goin' on? - Haven't you heard?

Somebody knocked off the dog track here.

According to the radio description

it sound a lot like your boyfriend.

Well, there's 50,000 up for grabs.

So you wait for Morgan.

I'm gonna take Laura Ann back to Macon.

- Come on. - I'm not goin'.

You better do as I say.

No, Bill, please.

Well, you're goin', Laura.

Anyway you choose.

I'm pretty sure that's him, sir.

Of course, he had this, uh, tape across his nose

and around his face.

Something like this?

Yeah.

Well, that's it.

Did he say anything to you?

No. He..

Come to think of it, he did say something.

He asked me if I had a wife and kids.

- Thank you. - Yes, sir.

Well, thank you.

Now, the security guard said he wasn't close enough

to identify the suspect when he drove away.

What about the car?

Small older model convertible.

It fits the description of the Millpark girl's car.

She's probably waiting for him somewhere.

We better start checkin' motels.

[engine revving]

[dramatic music]

[sighs]

[music continues]

Drop it!

Hey, look, you got the wrong idea.

Where is Laura?

We were just gonna take you to her.

She told us to wait for you.

That's a fact.

Where is she?

Bollin. He took her back with him.

[g*nshots]

[grunting]

[panting]

[engine cranks]

[engine revving]

[tires screeching]

[engine revving]

[indistinct chattering on radio]

[indistinct chattering]

He's wounded, but he'll be.. He'll live.

- Yeah. - The other one's up front.

[indistinct chattering]

The Forrest brothers.

Darrin's unconscious, Lloyd's been shot.

Any witnesses?

It scared these people pretty bad, inspector.

But all they did see was a car driving out.

And we found traces of blood leading to the spot it was in.

This Morgan himself must be wounded, too.

[man on radio] 'Control to Inspector Erskine.'

- Erskine. - 'Inspector.'

[man on radio] 'Surveillance in Macon reports'

'Bollin and the Millpark girl'

'have returned to the Emerald Isles.'

Have them maintain surveillance. We'll be there shortly.

[instrumental music]

[siren wailing]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[panting]

[tires screeching]

How did they find us, Laura?

- How did they find us? - I didn't tell 'em, Johnny.

I swear to that.

Please believe me.

Then there isn't any reason why we shouldn't just take off again

is there?

You can't go anywhere, Johnny.

Neither one of us can go anywhere now.

[engine revving]

Move in.

Boy, it was so good to trust somebody.

Right there, Morgan.

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

Can I just ask him something, please?

Of course.

Johnny, you believe me, don't ya?

At least say you don't think I sold you out.

I believe you.

Maybe it's like you said.

Just no place for either one of us to go.

[male narrator] John Lee Morgan recovered from his wounds

and was found guilty of bank robbery

interstate transportation of stolen property

and car theft.

Jack Wiley was convicted of assaulting federal officers.

William Bollin and Lloyd and Darrin Forrest

were convicted by the state of Florida of attempted m*rder.

[siren wailing]

[theme music]

[music continues]
