[male narrator] On the evening of June 20th

while taking his nightly stroll

through a peaceful Los Angeles park

Calvin Betts suffered a heart attack

after what was thought to be an attempted robbery.

A news vendor questioned at the scene of the crime

told of seeing a young man follow Betts into the park.

The description of this man

including the presence of a limp

suggested to police a suspect

Darryl Thomas Ryder, a convicted bank robber

who along with inmate, Henry Elkins

had just escaped from a Federal Penitentiary

critically wounding a guard in the process.

When the news vendor positively identified Ryder's photograph

FBI assistance was requested.

Both fugitives were armed

and considered extremely dangerous.

"Till death us do part."

Do you make anything of it, Lewis?

Not offhand.

According to this, Ryder was serving out

two robbery convictions at the time of his escape.

So, the first thing he does is go after an old man in the park.

And leave a peculiar message like that behind.

I'd like to go to Los Angeles, Arthur, interview the victim.

Alright, Lewis.

'Let me know as soon as you have anything.'

[dramatic music]

[door closes]

[music continues]

[telephone rings]

Kress residence.

'Hello?'

'Hello!'

[music continues]

Who was it?

'Oh, it was probably the wrong number.'

Do you remember this, Mrs. Cruthers?

Oh, my, I remember you got it for your 14th birthday.

You played it so much, I used to hear it in my sleep.

[chuckles]

Oh, I guess I was a terrible romantic at 14.

I think you still are.

You're right.

But this house has so many

beautiful memories for me.

It's like putting my whole childhood in storage.

Oh, Amy!

Y-you know..

Now, listen, if I don't get out of here this minute

you'll have me in tears.

Why don't you go on? I'm almost finished.

I'll see you in the morning.

Oh, I hope your husband's feeling better.

I'm sure it's nothing that

a little rest and lot of sympathy won't cure.

[instrumental music]

Oh, he's the one, inspector.

But I-I don't think I've ever seen him before the park.

Does the name Darryl Ryder mean anything to you?

Darryl Ryder?

I'm afraid not. Should it?

Not necessarily.

You're a lawyer, aren't you, Mr. Betts?

Yes, but I, I've been retired for the past three years.

Ryder's been in and out of trouble

with the law since he was 16.

'I was wondering if there's a possibility'

'your paths might have crossed.'

Hmm, well, there's always that possibility

but I doubt it.

I had very little to do with criminal law.

I handle mostly divorce cases.

Was that here in Los Angeles?

Pennsylvania, Scranton.

That's where Ryder's from, Mr. Betts.

Oh?

Could I see that photo again?

I, uh, might add the limp, it's fairly recent.

He broke his leg during attempted prisoner escape.

I'm sorry, I wish I could help you.

Well, thanks anyway, Mr. Betts.

'Inspector.'

Perhaps this is my imagination

but this Ryder seemed to..

H-he seem to take, sort of, satisfaction out of chasing me.

Uh, I mean, he seemed to enjoy it.

Agents interviewing airport personnel who were on duty

late last night came up with something.

Someone matching Ryder's description

was seen boarding a flight for Tampa, Florida.

The plane landed in Tampa this morning.

I really wish you wouldn't stay here tonight.

Looks so empty.

It's been my second home for the past ten years.

It's gonna be like saying goodbye to an old friend.

You want me to come inside with you?

Place is such a mess.

Beside, I wanna get to bed early tonight.

I have a big day tomorrow.

Okay.

Talk to you tomorrow morning.

Okay. Get a good night's sleep.

Mm-hmm, I just wanna call Mrs. Cruthers to see

how her husband is feeling.

- Goodnight. - Goodnight.

[intense music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Someone there?

[music continues]

Who's there?

[music continues]

Who are you?

What do you want?

Please!

Don't!

[sobbing] 'Don't.'

Where's Kress?

My father?

I mean, Joseph Kress.

He's dead.

He died over a month ago.

- That's a lie. - No!

- That's got to be a lie! - No!

[sobbing] Please, my father's dead.

I'm telling you the truth. That's why I'm moving.

Can't you just see, I'm moving?

- Alright, alright. - Please.

This was meant for him.

[door closes]

[sighs]

[crying]

[instrumental music]

[Lewis] 'Is that the man, Miss Kress?'

Yes.

And you're sure you've never seen him before last night?

I'm positive.

It was all so weird and frightening.

He had this terrible look in his eyes.

And his voice, the way he asked for my father with such hatred.

Miss Kress, did he give you any indication

what he wanted with your father?

No.

But I thought about it after I called the police.

And I thought, maybe it had something to do

with my father's work.

What was your father's work?

- 'He was a judge.' - Here in Tampa?

No, we only vacationed here.

Our home is in Pennsylvania.

'My father was a judge in the Courts of Common Pleas'

'in Scranton.'

Thank you, Miss Kress.

Inspector Erskine?

My father was a very fair man.

'Whatever reasons this Ryder has for hating him'

'I'm sure they exist only in his mind.'

I'm sure they do.

[Louise] "Bernard, Clarence R.

Herald Lee."

Uh, w-what did you say that first name was?

Margaret.

Well, that was my great aunt's name.

Uh, yes.

"Margaret Jane Barnard.

Bet she doesn't live there anymore.

That's right.

She sold the house couple of years ago.

And you don't have another address for her.

Not unless she bought another house here in Scranton.

Uh, uh, perhaps she moved into an apartment house.

'Did you look in the telephone directory?'

Yes, she's not listed.

Well, then perhaps she just plain moved away.

People do that nowadays.

Even older people.

Well, I remember years ago..

Uh, young man!

Could this be Maggie Barnard you're looking for?

Yes, Maggie.

Some of her old friends used to call her Maggie.

Why, I haven't seen Maggie

for years and years.

You won't believe this

but we used to go to high school together.

'Her name was Phillips then.'

'That, that's why the name Barnard'

'didn't ring a bell right away.'

Then you know where she lives?

Are you a friend of hers?

I used to do odd jobs for her around the house

before I moved away.

Oh!

Well, the last I heard

Maggie had suffered a stroke.

'Rather bad one, I'm afraid.'

'Left her partially paralyzed.'

And where is she?

Well, I understand she's in a nursing home.

Regency, I suppose.

Thank you.

[instrumental music]

Inspector, Tom, hope you had a good flight.

Nice to see you, Ken.

Going through the court records

we just turned up something very interesting, inspector.

The Attorney Betts... represented Ryder's ex-wife.

A girl by the name of Mary Jone Barnard

in an annulment action over five years ago.

'Residing judge was Joseph Kress.'

Where is the girl now?

We haven't been able to locate her as yet.

Does she have any family here?

Uh, yes, uh, mother.

She seems to have dropped out of sight.

Now, according to the statements given at the annulment hearing

Ryder was very much against it.

And he seemed to think he could afford to take care of a wife

and that, uh, they were both old enough to live their own lives.

What was her feeling?

Very little, her mother did all the talking for her.

She obviously didn't think much of Ryder as a son-in-law.

Hmm.

[dramatic music]

[door opening]

Ready for your medication, Mrs. Barnard?

I have a surprise for you.

You had a call this evening.

My daughter?

No, but he did say he was a friend of yours.

A Mr. Bailer.

He wanted to come to visit you tonight

but I told him it was too late.

And that you're in room ten

and he could come tomorrow afternoon.

'He said he would.'

I don't remember any Mr. Bailer.

Oh, well.. Well, I'm sure you will once you see him.

Especially, after you've had a good night's sleep.

Goodnight.

[intense music]

[clatters]

[music continues]

[man on radio] 'Unit 1?'

Go ahead.

'We have an address on Mary Barnard's mother.'

'She's a patient at the Regency Nursing Home.'

'315, South Curzon Road.'

Thank you, we'll head out there.

You better alert the hospital attendants on duty

notify the police.

'10-4.'

Jimmy, when do you think you'll be coming home?

But that's so far away.

Of course I'll wait for you.

I love you too.

Bye, honey.

[instrumental music]

[breathing heavily]

Darryl!

Is this what you're looking for, Mrs. Barnard?

Yes. Yes, I will, right away.

Chuck, I just got this call about Mrs. Barnard.

It was from the FBI.

Did you ever wonder what became of the ex son-in-law?

'And what he's been up to all these years?'

Did you miss me...Mrs. Barnard?

[intense music]

[grunting]

Aah!

[music continues]

He was here.

He must have gone out the back way.

Is Miss Barnard alright?

Yes, I just gave her a sedative.

We got to her room just in time.

He got away.

We couldn't find him in the dark.

[instrumental music]

I never knew what my daughter saw in him.

He was such a wild boy.

He was always in trouble.

It's very important that we find her, Mrs. Barnard.

I don't know where she is.

When was the last time you heard from her?

After I pushed her to get the annulment..

...she grew to hate me.

'She mo-moved out shortly after.'

'That was...almost five years ago.'

And you have no idea where she might be?

'No.'

Did she have any close friends here

that she might have kept in touch with?

Mary Jone never had any close friends.

She blamed me for that too.

Would you mind if we had a copy made of this?

No.

Please.

I keep hoping that she'll call.

Maybe she doesn't know I'm sick.

I-if you find her, please tell her..

...I'm sorry.

Mr. Ward's on the line.

Thank you, Mrs. Barnard.

- Hello, Arthur. - 'Yes, Lewis.'

Ryder seems to be following a definite pattern of revenge.

The lawyer, the judge, mother-in-law.

I imagine his ex-wife will be next.

Have you found out where she is?

[Lewis] 'Not yet.'

Well, the Pittsburg office just called.

One of their informants spotted Henry Elkins.

The inmate who escaped with Darryl Ryder.

'So, you'd better get up to Pittsburg.'

We'll leave right away.

[intense music]

No.

I'm sure she lives here.

Hey, I-I know Peru, Indiana's not exactly big town USA

but you can't expect me to know everyone who lives here.

Her name's Mary Jone.

Pretty name.

[chuckles] I thought for a minute there

I was gonna be forced into a higher tax bracket.

Got a choice?

Let's gamble.

[instrumental music on jukebox]

Hey, that's pretty good.

Been a long time since you've seen her?

Mm-hmm.

You still can't forget her, huh?

Oh, you don't have to answer.

It's written all over your face.

And I know the look.

Believe me, I know the look.

Let me take another look at the picture.

- Sure. - This time with some help.

This was taken a long time ago.

And she may have her hair different now.

Maybe longer, huh?

Yeah, she always wanted to wear her hair long.

- Maybe.. - Maybe you know her?

- Well, there is a resemblance. - Uh-huh.

Uh, there's this gal.

I've seen her over at the market a few times.

I've never talked to her but, um

she does look a little like the picture.

Uh-huh. Uh, which market?

Barton's. The big one on the corner.

Oh, thank you, thank you.

- 'Mister?' - Hmm?

Um, in case you don't find her

we do serve dinner here.

Steaks, chops

a little conversation.

Thank you.

The hotel clerk definitely identified Elkins

as the man who registered under the name of Jessie Smith.

'He said he left the hotel about noon.'

Hasn't returned yet.

All units are in position.

Lou.

Looks like our man there.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

Elkins, FBI.

Drive!

[g*nsh*t]

[tire screeching]

[music continues]

Keep going, keep going!

[g*nsh*t]

[tires screeching]

Down the alley, down the alley!

[music continues]

[Lewis] That's far enough.

Drop the g*n.

Turn around. Hands over your head.

You have the right to remain silent.

Anything you say can be used against you.

'And you have the right to an attorney, if you wish.'

You got me. What more do you want?

Darryl Ryder.

Now what do I look like, his keeper?

You were his cell mate. You broke out together.

What were his plans?

One thing. Staying out.

Did he ever speak about his ex-wife?

Yeah, he used to.

Come to think of it, he used to wear my ears out

talking about her.

What'd he say?

How she was waiting for him on the outside.

How they were gonna get married again, start all over.

The usual pipe dreams.

And then what happened?

Same thing that happens to all dreams, you wake up.

She, uh, came to visit him one day.

Must've been two years ago.

He came back to the cell looking like

someone kicked him in the stomach.

You have any idea why?

She told him she wasn't gonna wait for him anymore.

They were through.

She thought it would be, uh, kinder telling him face-to-face

than writing him a letter.

'From that time on, Darryl never mentioned her name.'

He just kept it inside him like an open sore.

And believe me, I never mentioned it either.

Do you know if she told him where she was going?

Yeah, yeah.

I remember he mentioned a town, uh..

[chuckles]

Stuck out in my mind because I didn't even know

we had a place called that in this country.

- A place called what? - Peru.

Peru, Indiana.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[car honking]

- Need any help? - Oh, no.

I just got a few things to buy.

What time do you think you'll be home?

Early.

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

Surprised, Mary?

Yes.

But you're not happy to see me, are you?

I was hoping you would be. I was hoping--

Darryl, I'm married now.

To that guy I saw you talking to in the truck earlier?

- Yes. - Uh-huh.

That-that time I came to see you

I, I just didn't feel the same way about you any more.

I thought I made it clear.

I love you, Mary.

- You're still my wife. - Our marriage was annulled.

"Till death us do part." Remember?

Isn't that the way it went?

We were just kids then, Darryl.

We really didn't know what we were doing.

But we were happy.

That was a long time ago.

Sometimes it even seems like another life.

I've got to get home.

Mary.

You're the cause of everything that's happened to me.

And of all the things that I've done

you're to blame for all of it.

Darryl, you don't really believe that?

Oh, yes, I do.

You didn't have to have that annulment made.

We could have run off together.

Then I had to prove to your mother

that I-I-I could become something and be worthy of you.

And I had to go out and make money.

Well, you didn't have to steal it!

'There were other things you could have done.'

- Like what? - There were jobs.

Oh, like working in the gas station or sweeping up floors.

Well, at least it was honest.

And would that have satisfied your mother

or proved anything to her?

It would have proved something to me.

Instead, you took the easy way out.

Started running wild again and got yourself into more trouble!

You've used the annulment as an excuse for your own weakness.

There's only one person to blame for what you've done, Darryl.

Yourself.

No, I'm not letting you go, Mary.

- Darryl, please. - You're mine.

[intense music]

[tires screeching]

[airplane droning]

I have agents out checking now

trying to find Mary Barnard.

- What about Ryder? - He's in town.

A merchant here identified his picture.

He was also asking about her.

Keith!

Keith?

- Hey, honey, what's wrong? - He's here.

- I talked to him. - Who?

Darryl, he was waiting for me outside the market.

- Well, how did he find ya? - I don't know, but he did.

Does he know you're married?

I told him, but it was like he didn't hear me.

He kept talking about the past and how I was his wife.

I tried telling him that was all over but he wouldn't listen.

'Keith, I'm afraid.'

Of what? What can he do?

He said I was to blame for all the things that happened to him.

That it was all my fault.

- Well, that's crazy. - 'But he believed it.'

'I could see it in his face.'

Well, you shouldn't have bothered talking to him.

Why didn't you just leave?

I tried but he wouldn't let me.

Keith, he said I still belonged to him.

And that he was never gonna let me go.

Well, I've got news for him, honey.

You're mine.

Have been ever since we first met.

I'm not gonna let you go either.

Now, come on, honey, let's forget all about him.

He's probably packin' his bags right now.

I wish I could've believed that.

But I can't.

Keith, call the sheriff.

And then tell him what? Tell him your ex-husband's here in Peru?

- There's no law against that. - Well, maybe there is.

- At least in Darryl's case. - What do you mean?

The last time I saw him, he was in prison.

Well, he's probably out on parole.

I-I didn't think they allowed parolees

to travel about just any place they wanted.

And there's something else, Keith.

While we were outside the market

he saw a sheriff's car driving towards us.

And he was scared.

Please, Keith.

Call the sheriff.

Okay, honey. If it will make you feel any better.

- What's wrong? - The phone.

Must be out of order.

- Oh, maybe the wire's are cut. - Oh, now, come on, honey.

This is not the first time the phone's gone dead.

But, Keith, he could be outside!

Alright, honey, I-I'll look outside.

You go see that the back door is locked.

[intense music]

[screams]

Keith!

He's out there, he was trying to unlock the door.

[intense music]

[Darryl] 'I told you I wasn't gonna let you go, Mary.'

Oh!

[g*n c*ck]

Stay out of sight.

How long ago was this taken?

Uh, six years. She's twenty-three now.

Well, it, uh, looks a little like Mrs. Owens.

Come to think of it, her first name is Mary.

- Do you have her address? - She's a customer of mine.

I'll get it.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[rattling]

No.

Please.

Mary, open up!

Go away.

- I won't hurt you. - 'Please.'

'Please, leave me alone.'

Mary, let me in!

Please, go away!

[g*nsh*t]

Oh.

Don't be afraid, Mary.

I love you, I said I wouldn't hurt you.

- Where's my husband? - I'm your husband.

- 'No.' - "Till death us do part."

And we're both still alive.

And all those people that tried to separate us

uh, your mother, the lawyer, the judge.

They were all wrong.

What have you done to Keith?

He had no right to you. You're still mine.

[instrumental music]

Now, we're gonna go away together, Mary.

We're gonna go far away.

And this time, no one's gonna come between us.

No, please. Please, leave me alone.

And we're gonna be happy.

FBI, Ryder.

If you don't want her hurt, just stay away.

How far do you think you'll get?

[music continues]

I'm taking my wife home with me.

She still loves me.

And we're going to be happy together.

The best thing you can do for her, is let her go.

Mary!

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

I guess with all that's happened

it doesn't make sense about my mother any more.

I'm sure she'd be glad to see you.

[Mary] 'You know, inspector'

I always had a feeling something like this would happen.

That Darryl would come looking for me.

It was like living in a nightmare.

Well, it's over now, Mrs. Owens.

Thank you.

[male narrator] Darryl Thomas Ryder and Henry Charles Elkins

were found guilty of escape

and assaulting federal officers.

They were returned to federal penitentiaries

to serve the remainder of their sentences.

Various as*ault charges

are pending against Ryder in state courts.

[theme music]

[music continues]
