[male narrator] On the morning of May 5th

David Franklin, a young stockbroker from Boston

was found unconscious outside the city of

Providence road island.

Upon regaining consciousness at Providence General Hospital

Franklin told his story to local authorities.

Later that day Franklin's car was found abandoned

on a side street in Queens, New York.

Investigation revealed a knife engraved with the name

Hank Shuway.

Together with latent fingerprints found in the car

the knife was immediately forwarded by New York police

to the FBI in Washington.

You'll notice his approach is always the same.

He passes himself off as someone well known by reputation

although unfamiliar to his victim.

I understand his accomplice is a young woman.

[Lewis] 'Usually posing as a secretary.'

Although on some occasions he'll work with a man

using him as a business associate

bodyguard or chauffeur, as in this case.

Uh, Mr. Ward, have we, uh, been able to do

anything with those latent prints?

They're on their way to the identification division

right now.

It's amazing how little the people who've been swindled

remember about him.

And you feel this latest victim might remember more, hm?

I think it's worth a try.

And how soon after that did he ask you

to handle his stock transaction?

A couple of days. He, uh..

Jean indicated that he had, uh..

...taken a liking to me.

And this was his way of showing it.

[Lewis] 'Is there anything particularly unusual about him?'

There was, uh.. There was something about his hotel room.

You know, it was, um..

A strange odor.

Like a.. A medicine of some kind.

It was like nothing I've ever smelled before.

'and his secretary and the chauffeur to one of our artist?'

[Franklin] 'Oh, yes, sir, I certainly could.'

Were you carrying traveler's checks?

Yeah. Oh..

And a couple hundred dollars.

I guess he got it all.

I'll hand in serial numbers to the NCIC.

And ask the bureau to check the general appearance file

on confidence men.

of this hotel chain?

Small time hoodlum

with a history of arrest and convictions

that go back to 1956.

Identification division has positively matched

the latents found in Franklin's car

with Yorkin's fingerprint record.

'We're sending photographs to you.'

Do we have an address on him?

His last known address was the Clark Hotel in New York city.

Agents there say he moved from that address almost a year ago

and hasn't been heard from since.

Lewis, show Yorkin's photograph to David Franklin

and if he confirms the identification

ask the US attorney if he'll authorize a warrant

for Yorkin's arrest.
